Emma was three months away from her due pregnancy date with Bonne when she attended a routine appointment with her midwife, and things escalated. She had not been feeling well but put it down to normality, given it was her first pregnancy. “Age 41 and my first time at the rodeo,” says Emma. “I was admitted to Whangārei Hospital, and on the advice of a doctor, we made a mercy dash to Auckland Hospital. “Bonne had stopped growing and moving, and my blood pressure was through the roof. It was unmanageable, and medical professionals had grave concerns about our welfare. “Two days later, an emergency caesarean section was performed. There

“Bonne stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Auckland for 22 days and was transferred by helicopter from Auckland NICU to Whangārei Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit. “She remained for a further 64 days before being discharged on December 19, 2019 — day 87 of the NICU/SCBU journey. That transfer back to Whangārei was courtesy of the Northland Rescue Helicopter. “The care I received from the medical teams was superb throughout, and I was stoked that one of my favourite nurses was the one to fly with us to Whangārei. “Ronald McDonald House had also been amazing in the way they supported Jim. He had to keep our business ventures ticking along, with a dairy farm

was only an eight per cent chance of a live birth because Bonne was more than two months premature at 29 weeks. “She arrived amidst a measles epidemic, weighing less than two pounds of butter at 970 grams. Because of the criticality of the situation, I was unable to cuddle her, but the reality was that I was too unwell to anyway.” In weeks to come, Bonne got up to eight hours a day lying skin-to-skin on Emma and Jim’s chests, known as Kangaroo Care. “As a result, she has formed an amazing bond and become a feisty livewire of a child despite being half the size of children the same age. “The birth was not the romantic movie experience where they place the baby on your chest for your first cuddle. What followed was an 87-day hospital journey for our family.

and beef run-off in the mix providing additional challenges. “As for the Northland Rescue Chopper experience. I wonder what would have happened if I had not been given the care and kindness. I look back on it with gratitude. “Without the chopper, it would have meant that we could not have come home to our home town, and Jim had been under immense pressure being away from the businesses. “It was my first helicopter ride, and I often wonder what would happen to women and babies in need of critical care. They would die without the service. “It is something we just have to support because it is there for us all 365 days of the year, every hour of the day and night. It is such a life-saver.” To support the rescue chopper go to nest.org.nz. ¢

Stroke of Insight, an exhibition by artists Peter and Tatjana Panyoczki at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, is described as a powerful exploration of how insight can change, guide and influence one’s perspective and interpretation. “The exhibition shows works and materials in a new light, from a different angle, with new insights,” says Mangawhai Artists Inc chair Belinda Vernon. “Tatjana is well-known for her contemporary jewellery. She experiments with metals and other materials to produce unique and intricate art forms. In this exhibition, she explores new insights while finding a new vision. “Peter is a mixed media artist, working in a hybrid of forms and mediums — painting, sculpture, installation, photography and digital technology. This exhibition shows his work through a new lens.” Reflecting on having a medical stroke himself, the experience has influenced the exhibition, and Peter believes it may have been a blessing to halt and pause the stream of consciousness. “I was there for a brief time, and I had an angel, my wife Tatjana,” he says. “Maybe it is a grace to fall back into a state of speechlessness, to wonder what we are, and to reconstitute what we took for granted. I came out of it and was curious to see how it changed my artistic perception. Well, there was nothing fundamental, but things have changed. “Everyday life, the awareness of the light and the dark, the life around us, the turning world, the pan-human behaviour, all this is more present than before. It is a stroke of insight, indeed.

“These works are not new, but looking back under this context and the absence of a stroke, they could open up an unknown door, a new angle, as it happened to me, being speechless and wonder. I gave it a go.” Setting the scene for what is to follow, Tatjana says strokes come hard and fast, usually unannounced and in various dimensions. “Sometimes they puff up in smoke and others linger,” she says. “What you do with the insight — is where it gets interesting. Pause, reflect, observe, self-reflect. “It has led me down a rabbit hole, an investigation of documenting the patinas and oxidisation of obsolete and discarded metal objects, such as through a fire-destroyed coin collection, found objects and off-cuts from my practice as a contemporary jeweller. “The process of making miniature prints of each piece of metal excited me more than the end result. I let this path lead the way and take charge, not thinking about the final outcome too much. “Through subtle interventions between each print, the process is recorded from the original state to a wearable piece. It is getting there that is exciting.” Stroke of Insight is contemplative, uplifting, inspiring and beautiful. Two artists complement and balance each

The value of cardboard u by Ann van Engelen

Grant and Lesley Jacobs are advocates for recycling corrugated cardboard that they turn into animal bedding. “We source clean corrugated cardboard locally from people and businesses in the area and chop it up, and it becomes perfect bedding for animals and birds,” says Lesley. “Grant and I also sell American retro furniture, and he wanted to find a better way to recycle our corrugated cardboard boxes. As a Trade Me buff, he found a machine that chops up cardboard.” Grant and Lesley decided to buy the machine as they were told that most cardboard going to the recycling refuse stations ends up in the landfill. “We discovered people were paying to get their cardboard taken away, and nothing happens to it — it ends up in the dump. Our machine chops it up, and the finished product comes in an 18–20kg bale, ready to use as animal or bird bedding. “The chips absorb smells. It is virtually dust-free, low in bacteria, mould-free and highly biodegradable. Each compacted bale covers an area four to five times the size of the bale.

“Chickens love scratching around in the cardboard, and one customer in Christchurch insists it helps stop red mites on his birds. “Once you muck out the used bed, you can place it in your garden or into your worm compost. Grant recently put some around our corn and strawberries after watering the plants. Four days later, the moisture content under the corn was still high. “The good thing is you don’t have the dry wet dry scenario going on — it maintains the moisture. Places like Mangawhai have lower rainfall, and this helps save water as you don’t have to water the garden daily. “We have brought the American Retro Furniture in from America for 14 years now. It is diner furniture from the 50s and 60s and is original retro commercial quality. “It is quite an experience owning a business nowadays. We have just unpacked a container, which we ordered last June. Our showroom is in Kaiwaka, next

to the liquor shop opposite the Italian Bakery. “The furniture brings back so many memories for people. Almost every New Zealander had someone in the family with retro-styled furniture when they were little if they didn’t have any of their own. “The retro furniture used to get us out and about on the road — we have it all over the country. We love the style and bright colours and the look it achieves for people. “We don’t have standard opening hours and can be found through our Airlyte or American Retro Furniture Facebook pages. We love being a part of the green machine recycling and are at the Mangawhai Community Market every week with our Airlyte animal bedding. “We are always keen to hear from other people or businesses who need their clean flat-packed corrugated cardboard recycled. The fact we are saving this useful cardboard from going to landfill or being burned is a huge success.” ¢

Sand Art Mangawhai and the Mangawhai Rotary Club have joined forces to present a fun-filled family day at Mangawhai Heads Surf Beach on Sunday, January 30, from 10am–4pm. “We have brought the annual sand sculpture competition forward in the hope of good weather,” says organiser Dennis Emsley. “We have created two more competitions, Golf Ball Drop and Fancy Dress Dog and Owner because we wanted the day to appeal to all age groups.” Each competition is $5 a person to enter, with tickets available every Saturday at the two Mangawhai markets at the Rotary stall, and outside the Wood Street Four Square, from 9am–noon. They can also be purchased on the day. “There are four key sponsor companies that have kindly donated all prize monies. These are The REAL Team/Wallace & Stratton Real Estate, Raincloud Trusted Water Delivery, Bachcare NZ and Mangawhai Four Square Store — Wood Street. “The idea for the golf ball drop came from a couple of our Rotary Club members, Kaitlin and Dan, who were members of Rotary in Canada. “Ticket numbers are written on golf balls that are loaded into a container and dropped from a great height. In Canada, they use fire brigade extension ladders or helicopters.

“The container is then released, and the balls drop into a zone, which contains one golf ball size hole that accommodates three balls. The balls that land in the hole or nearest to it, win the prizes. “We were donated 600 brand new golf balls by a Maungaturoto Rotary Club member and are using a club member’s tractor with a front-end loader bucket to place the balls since we don’t have a fire truck or helicopter.” This competition begins at 10am. There are three prizes of $500, $300 and $200. “The fancy dress dog and owner competitions are held every year all over the world, so we thought why not here. “Starting at 11am, the prizes are the same as the Golf Ball Drop. Beach rules apply, and all dogs must be on a lead, and we expect owners to clean up after their pets. “Bowls of freshwater will be provided for the dogs, and some cover will be available. The Vet Centre Northland is providing a judge and is kindly donating doggy goodies as additional prizes. Our sand sculpture competition starts around midday and ends around 4pm, with prizes of $1,000, $500 and $300.

p Local sculptors Brett Sutherland and Joanna Bagley with an example of a sandcastle they created for last year’s competition

“It is open to all ages, single or teams of four maximum, and the use of hand tools is allowed. The first prize of $1,000 is donated by The REAL Team at Wallace & Stratton Real Estate. “We will have three judges for both the Fancy Dressed Dog and Owner and the sand sculpture competitions. Judges’ decisions will be final, and

by entering any of the competitions, competitors agree to photographs and or videos of those events being used for marketing purposes. “All proceeds from the sale of entry tickets will go to the Mangawhai Rotary Club to help support local community service projects like the Learn To Sail project.” ¢

A ceramic journey u by Ann van Engelen

Linda and Roger Peryer moved to Ruakākā from South Auckland eighteen months ago, bringing Dragonsrest Ceramics with them. “The dragon is my Chinese sign, and I have loved them since I was a child and started collecting them when I got married. I have a real affinity with the dragon,” says Linda. “As a child, I had a leg disability and wasn’t taught a lot because I was perceived to be dumb as I had speech problems. I went off and did every course I could and I did the judges’ course. “Roger and I met on Pakatoa Island later in life, and life has been good for

“I had taught ceramics for 25 years, and when we moved, I decided not to teach anymore. We had a lot of my pieces, so we placed them in our garden as ornaments. “I make a lot of balls and things, and Roger came up with the idea to stack them on top of each other, and our garden stacks were born. If you don’t work it yourself, you are not going to get anywhere. “If I wasn’t determined, I wouldn’t be alive now, and this is what has come of it. I married at 16 and had two children. To open the kiln after a glaze firing and see the first absolute colours and how they have worked is always extremely exciting. Roger and I complement each other very much

Crystals are pieces of glass fragments that are added to the glaze and explode during firing in the kiln, creating patterns. “Some crystals sit exactly where they are placed while others will trail down or over a piece adding to the uniqueness. One of my biggest loves is the mixing of the colours. “Compared to pottery, ceramic is lighter and fully glazed inside and out, while pottery has a dry footed bottom, making it not always food safe. Ceramics are poured into a plaster cast and set before going into the kiln for the first firing. Once cooled and glazed, they have another firing. “I enjoy playing with colour and designs. Some pieces can take me three weeks to complete. There is a neverending option for what you can make with ceramic. If you can think of it — you can probably do it. “I love taking pieces of flat tile clay and carving a design out like my tree tile work. I make a stencil pattern and go from there. You can put citronella

candles in a cutout vase, and when it is lit, it creates patterns around you, and they are really soothing. “I am presently working on a big owl, but make everything from platters and pūkeko, dragons and balls, to everyday functional items. “The garden stacks have become a big part of our work, and we have introduced a new line called Bright Stacks. We have put a hole through the clay and added seed lights that run by battery, so they are suitable for inside or outdoors. “They are a permanent bright ornament in a garden and should look the same in 20 years. They won’t dull or tarnish but will need cleaning. “Our kitchenware includes coffee cups, jugs, wine goblets, platters and bowls of all sizes. Roger made the mould for the wine goblets and we matched them with jugs. In summer they keep cold drinks cold and in winter can be used for hot drinks like mulled wine.

“Everything we make can be used in the oven, microwave and dishwasher. They are also easy to clean. The clay is first fired to 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit, and then 1,860 degrees Fahrenheit once it is glazed, the average household oven wouldn’t go any higher than 450, so that is why it is safe. “It is important to know if you have cracked pottery kitchenware to stop using it as bacteria builds in the cracks and breeds. That is why it is also important to have glazed bottoms, as this protects you from nasty illnesses from bacteria. “No two pieces are ever the same. I do colour variations and can make things in colours someone wants. I don’t do single colours as mixed colours match decor better. “I get a lot of pleasure doing the cutouts because I push the boundaries with my artwork and what I can do with them. To open the kiln after a glaze firing and see the first absolute colours and how they have worked is

always extremely exciting. Roger and I complement each other very much. “Together we have made a business that people enjoy. We go to the Mangawhai Community Market, Waipū Artisans Market and Marsden Cove Marina Market. “We will be at the combined arts exhibition at the marquee at Marsden Cove during Auckland Anniversary Weekend, and we are very excited about that. The work I will have there is what I don’t take to the markets. “At the end of the day, it is nice to give someone a fun piece full of joy that adds happiness to their lives. That is very much what we love. Even if I have to sit in a wheelchair one day and work, we will still be able to enjoy what we like doing. “We never thought we would be doing this. I have always said if you are in love with your partner and love them, you will work on your relationship, and you will get stronger from it. Both of us are enjoying life here in Ruakākā.” ¢

WOMEN IN BUSINESS Building the structures of equality u by Andy Bryenton

Since 1893, when New Zealand became the first nation in the world to allow women the vote, the systems that encouraged division and inequality between the chromosomal genders have been slowly dismantled.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS Penny brings her professional knowledge and business experience to the business arena I have been a trainer, consultant and business coach for almost 20 years and worked both in New Zealand and internationally during that period. I am positive, informative, pragmatic, friendly but professional.

Linda Smith has been many things in her career, working in Education, Senior Management and Healthcare IT, but she has found her niche with the growing New Zealand olive industry. She and her husband, Chris, purchased the grove in April 2012 and spent the next 6 weeks pulling together the necessities for their first harvest. They have won awards each year since then from Olives NZ (the national olive association) for their extra virgin olive oil. This year the Frantoio won Gold. They also run The Grove Supply Co which services the olive industry as well as boutique fruit growers. Deeply passionate about New Zealand’s growing olive oil industry, Linda says their visit to Italy and Spain a couple of years ago was very encouraging and that New Zealand olive oil could become as successful as New Zealand wine is today. “I really believe that the olive industry can compete on the world stage but we have to compete on quality, producing top quality oil. We can definitely do that,” explains Linda. “We just have to discover the best way of growing olives for our climate.”

Experience At Penny’s Worth our key driver is involvement with small business training. Our core value is integrity, ensuring small business has an opportunity to upskill affordably - taking advantage of new knowledge and small practices to grow and develop. Training is a passion and I have experience in working with a wide range of clients - Tonga/Solomon Islands/Australia, as well as New Zealand. Clear explanations of complex topics with practical examples is a key tool.... Training courses provided by Penny’s Worth include: • One day GST - Understanding tax basics for your business • Getting started / setup and first steps • Legal structures for your business • Basic and advanced MYOB and Xero • Identifying and understanding your market • Financial Literacy - understanding enough to ask your accountant intelligent questions • Project Management Basics Strategic partnerships include Facilitating free courses for Te Wananga o Aotearoa - Certificate in Money Management/Certificate in Small Business and Project Management Training MYOB and Xero software NZ Business mentors Regional business partner with NZTE All courses locally based so no need to drive to Auckland or Whangarei

Ruakaka has been through so much with the Refinery and all the job losses in the area, that when anyone comes in to either eat or drink we want them to go away feeling chilled and smiling at the laughter that the staff and other patrons provide. Soap for hair. Who would have thought? I first started using soap to wash my hair when looking for a plastic-free alternative to traditional shampoo and body wash. One week into using Sanolifestyle soap, I was hooked! It is made using natural ingredients, smells amazing, has no plastic bottle, and most of all feels wonderful on my skin and hair. What more could you want? When the opportunity came along for me to become the owner of SANOlifestyle, I jumped at it. I have always loved making, baking, and creating, and learning to make soap has been an exciting new adventure. I am lucky to have support in my new adventure of a great network of businesswomen, especially my wonderful mother. Handcrafting natural soaps fits perfectly with my desire to live low waste and reduce my impact on our planet. Every day working in the soap studio is filled with beautiful sights and scents. Nature provides us with a wealth of beautiful ingredients and I love using them to create delightful and decadent skincare products. I hand make all the soap myself at my studio at 79 Whau Valley Road. The SANOlifestyle studio is open weekdays from 12-5pm and by appointment outside those hours.

Roses with heritage u by Liz Clark

Since the advent of the garden in ancient times, the rose has been an integral, fragrant and timeless standout. In recent years a resurgence of interest in growing roses in home gardens has had nurseries developing new cultivars for their customers. However, modern varieties aside, heritage roses have also made a strong comeback. They’re found along roadsides, old gardens and around heritage properties thriving on neglect. Heritage roses come in a multitude of forms, colours and cultivars, and many are available in New Zealand. They’re worthy additions to any garden, even in a large pot — a statement is made. One of this writer’s favourites is the Gallica rose. Initially from central and southern Europe and eastward to Turkey and

the Caucasus, this subspecies has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years. Gallica roses have relatively few thorns and can be propagated from suckers. The plants thrive in several soil types, including clay, as long as it’s freedraining. Bloom colouration ranges from white to pink and deep purple. It flowers only once each season. Cultivars available include Charles de Mills, Duchesse de Montebello, Tuscany Superb and Beau Narcisse.

One of the hardiest of the rose family, the rugosa rose has a high resistance to black spot and other common diseases affecting modern cultivars. The species originated from Asia, mainly China, Japan and coastal Siberia. This rose is ideal for mass planting for hedging or as a stand-alone shrub in coastal areas. They are salt and wind tolerant, easily propagated from suckers and fragrant. Bloom colourations range from dark pink to white, and the hips are edible. Cultivars include Alexander Mackenzie, Americ a , C ampbell , Eugenie Ombler’s Rose and Frimbriata. A climbing heritage rose is a must-

have for fences, walls or a decorative arbour. The thornless Lady Banks’ Rose Lutea has a mass of soft, yellow blooms that flower throughout the growing season. Another variety to consider is Black Boy (1919) a thornless rose with deep red, almost black blooms. A vigorous grower, it will provide colour and fragrance for months. Also, consider Chaplin’s Pink Climber, Daily Dream and Leonide. While we’ve only covered a small portion of the heritage rose range, others include damask, moss, rambler, floribunda and many more. For more information about heritage roses, visit the Heritage Roses New Zealand website heritageroses.org.nz. ¢
