p The Standards of Training and Certification of Watchkeepers course arms participants with personal survival skills at sea

The February intake starting on February 1 will run for seven days, at which time participants will be armed with personal survival skills at sea. “This intake will be the first of many in 2022. The qualification could be a game-changer for some people,” says Training 4 Safety founder and director Mike Lindsay. Mike believes offering the training is particularly pertinent in light of some of the significant global maritime incidents and deaths of recent times. “Training 4 Safety is the first Northland business delivering the training. We successfully piloted the five-module Standards of Training and Certification of Watchkeepers course with numerous participants in late 2021. “Our team has done a really good job pulling this together after two

in the world in virtually any area of the maritime sector, but the course, and refreshers, is also available to anyone around the world working in the maritime sector.” Urban Sea founders Karma Butler and Kate Frazerhurst, who are involved in the New Zealand superyacht sector, say STCW training strengthens the existing marine services in Whangārei. “Crew often need their safety certifications updated, and what better place to do that than in Northland while they are here. There is already a lot of interest in this training, and we can only see that demand growing,” the pair say. years of preparation. We are really proud to be the first maritime training school in Northland providing STCW training courses. “It is ideal for people starting out in the marine industry, but we also have training for those needing their fiveyearly refreshers. “STCW provides people with personal survival techniques, which could help them survive at sea if there is a need to abandon ship.” The course is part of an international convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers 1978, which comes under the International Maritime Organisation and is approved by Maritime NZ. “The course is considered a minimum entry requirement to work on superyachts or in the commercial sector of the maritime sector. Northlanders qualifying in STCW can work anywhere

with the knowledge that will help them survive at sea in case of ship abandonment. • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting provide the skills to assess fire risks and prevent onboard fires by extinguishing fires on a vessel. • Elementary First Aid teaches skills and techniques required to apply basic first aid and first aid in lifethreatening situations. • Security Awareness Training is intended to give personnel onboard general security knowledge to enhance ship security. • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities help trainees learn how to limit pollution and other health and safety risks when working onboard a vessel while also building communication skills. Many small businesses, particularly in Auckland, are still struggling with the fallout from the pandemic. If your business was hit by a revenue decrease due to lockdowns, you can apply to the Small Business Cashflow Scheme for a loan – the terms are excellent, it’s backed by the government, and many businesses will be eligible. You can apply to the Small Business Cashflow Scheme throughout this year and next year, right up to the December 31 2023 deadline.

How much can you borrow and what are the terms? Your small business can borrow $10,000, plus an additional $1800 for each full-time employee. to repay it, you’ll be charged three per cent interest for the whole term of the loan. This is an outstanding rate and will not be matched on a business loan by any bank • Repayments are not compulsory for the first two years, after which time you’ll need to make regular principal-and-interest repayments For all the details about repayments, you can read more here — ird.govt.nz/ covid-19/business-and-organisations/ sbcs. Is your business eligible? To be eligible for the loan, your business must: • Have no more than 10 fulltime employees • Have been operating for at least six months • Have experienced a revenue drop of at least 30% during a two-week

period during lockdown • Be viable – we can help you produce evidence of this You can use the loan on any core operating costs, including rent, insurance, utilities, rates and supplier payments. You can read more details about eligibility on the Inland Revenue website link above. We can apply on your behalf Get in touch, and we can apply for this loan on your behalf, providing evidence to Inland Revenue of your business’s viability and eligibility. It originates from the Essenes, the people who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls. “The 2,000-year-old leather-bound scrolls were found, and the recipe was taken from there. “They took the sprouts and gave them life with water and sun. They mixed the sprouts to a paste with more water and mashed them into a round loaf. This was baked in the sun under a cloth on a rock. “That was their food for the next day, and they called it their daily bread. It is a written gospel — that this is how we make our daily bread. “The only difference with our recipe is we bake it in an oven at a low

temperature to preserve the goodness rather than the sun. “It has low gluten as the enzymes are active meaning, your body can digest it. Gluten is reduced in sprout growing as it is used up. It is a low glycaemic index food, which helps keep your blood sugars level, and that helps diabetics. “There is no sugar, salt, flour, oil or yeast in it, just sprouts and water. We now put our filtered spring water into a special carafe that changes the water structure and energises it. “The goodness and nutrition in the bread are highly nutritious as a raw food. You don’t need to eat much as it is really dense and is a pure food with no fillers.

“Rory was invited to breakfast with someone who ate Essene bread mashed with yoghurt and fruit every morning,” says Leanne. “Rory loved it, and at 2pm that day, he realised he hadn’t stopped for morning tea or lunch. “That started a conversation, and we were introduced to the people who used to make the bread. They sold us the business, and our printing studio became The Essene Bakery. “Essene bread predates the flour mill and is made from 100 per cent sprouts. The rich, moist, sticky flavour derives from the sprouting process, which converts the starch into maltose

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

The soil fixers u by Liz Clark

Look in any vegetable garden, and somewhere between the mix of lettuce and other vegetables will be a crop of peas or beans. Peas and beans are part of the extended family of legumes utilised for food consumption and provide nitrogen to the soil through nodules on the roots. The family also includes peanuts, kidney beans, lentils, scarlet runner beans, broad beans and many more. In the ornamental range, plants include sweet peas, lupins and many more used as cut flowers. Lupins, in particular, along with clover are also used as green manure for the soil to improve nitrogen levels and improve soil texture. Growing beans in the garden is more a matter of taste than thinking about the nitrogen-fixing side of things, and the same applies to peas. Taking a look at the vast range available from New Zealand seed suppliers the choices are mind-boggling, to say the least. Gardeners will be looking for varieties that are prolific producers for a long growing season. Climbing beans speak for themselves. They need some support to grow upon, the same as most pea species. Use poles, strings or netting to provide your climbing varieties with the necessary support required to ensure high cropping yields. Types include Scarlet Runner, Blue Lake Runner, Italian Flat, Lazy Housewife, Neekar Golden and Yard Long. More popular

in smaller gardens, dwarf beans are an ideal alternative to the climbing varieties. They can be planted easily in pots or between rows of corn or other vegetables to provide extra nitrogen for the soil. Prolific growers; these provide endless fresh pods for the table daily. Try out Dwarf Butter Cherokee, Roquefort Dwarf, Purple Tee Pee Dwarf, Top Crop and Borlotto Fire Tongue. Peas need little introduction — they’re another iconic part of the Kiwi diet. Most varieties require netting for support since they have a climbing habit. Use netting to provide a solid framework for your plants to grow upon. As with beans, peas need little care other than regular watering, a little fertiliser and regular picking of the pods. Types to try are Sugarsnap, Princess, Alderman Tall, Petit Provencal and Utrillo. For a little interest, peanuts can be germinated in small pots and transplanted into the garden. They’re especially good for restructuring difficult clay soil, so I’ve found in recent years. Harvest when the plant dies back. Sow lupins as either a green manure crop and cut down before flowering, then dig into the soil. There are also lupin varieties that can be grown for their spectacular flowers covering the colour spectrum. For more information on legumes, look online or talk to your local nursery professional. ¢

After a successful Christmas Trail, Northern Helping Hands is calling for sponsorship to support the community Easter Egg Hunt this coming April. The event will be held at War Memorial Park, Wellsford, on Easter Saturday, April 23 9am until noon. “The hunt will have staggered times to facilitate all age groups of children,” says organiser Libby Clews. “We plan to have music, coffee, food, museum activities, bouncy castles, spot prizes and more. We are also encouraging people to bring a picnic blanket to enjoy family time together.” Northern Helping Hands is a registered charitable trust and runs as a Facebook group.

The fire service will be there with a truck and hopefully the police as well — we might even get a tractor or two. “There will be a small merry-go-round and bouncy castles for the children. “To make all of this happen for the wider community, we need assistance with funding. There are monetary options and physical items, including park and gazebo hire, Easter eggs and food and coffee subsidies as ideally we want everything to be free, but a small cost would be better than full price.

“An approximate total of $9,540 is needed. We will advertise each company sponsoring the event on the community Facebook groups, our website and at Northern Helping Hands.” Please contact Libby on 021 797 712 or email libbyclews@gmail.com if you would like to be involved. ¢

All of her grandchildren have followed in her footsteps in the tutoring and education sector. “Ma and Pa have 12 granddaughters and finally welcomed a great-greatgrandson into the family. “On July 31 last year, she got a moko kauae on her chin at our marae in Otamatea. Known as the aunty of the area, she will say things others are too afraid to say “She met dad in Waikato, and they returned to Kaiwaka and set up home some 20 years ago from South Auckland. “Growing up, we had an open home, and we always had children visiting. Mum and dad fed everyone who dropped in, that was just our life, and my two brothers and I expected nothing less. “Later in life, mum worked with the Māori Women’s Welfare League helping young Māori women. That eventually saw Maria and Rau rent a room at the Kaiwaka town hall and start the local food bank now called Te Pātaka o Kaiwaka — The Storehouse of Kaiwaka. “Ma and Pa would travel far and wide to help families in need, and they would knock on the doors of the elderly to ensure they were OK. One of her granddaughters also received her moko kauae at the same time. Ma also received her cultural chin markings to give other girls the courage to get one if they desire. “It was a very historical event for our whānau and marae. Ma is always looking for new ventures, and dad tells her keeping up with her is harder than driving a school bus as he is retired — not refired of descendants gone by so they could also participate. It was her gift to us as part of her mahi for those coming up behind her.” The food bank is the Morgan’s most recent project. “Ma is always looking for new ventures, and dad tells her keeping up with her is harder than driving a school bus as he is retired — not refired. “Ma is very bold and tries to help people make good decisions. If she saw someone spending money unwisely after receiving groceries, she would ask them why they were not using their money to buy kai or pay their bills. “Known as the aunty of the area, she will say things others are too afraid to say. She speaks in a way that people understand, and people take it on board when she reprimands them. “This has seen a positive effect on whānau that she has helped as they don’t feel threatened but rather encouraged to get back on track. “She would also help parents or caregivers with children at their home and check if the elderly were OK.”

At Christmas, Ma and Pa are like Santa on the sleigh in her van. “She usually dresses up as Santa Ma and ensures children have treats and things. They have a lot of fun. This year dad and I organised and delivered the Kaiwaka Christmas boxes to give mum a break. “We had a chain gang to fill the boxes at the food bank, and it was a lot of fun. We would sing a little Christmas carol to bring a smile to the recipients’ faces. “Dad used to drive school buses and is a registered minister full-time. He has been accepted by local families as one of their own, and he is a kaumātua for police — a kaumātua is a respected tribal elder. “While he helps mum, people also ask him to bless their greenstones or their house, and if someone is unwell, he will go and pray for them and deliver a parcel of goodies. “In recent years, mum has developed a few health challenges and dad has taken on the role of her carer and now focusses on looking after her. I was

diagnosed with a massive brain tumour on Mother’s Day 2018, and it was hard for mum and dad. “I am OK and have to say mum and dad have done well coping with me, especially having her challenges too. She has dealt with a lot of loss and sadness the past few years and has continued to carry on. “As a pillar to the community, mum carries it well. She has found companionship in a maroon teddy bear named Mawhero, which means pink. “Mawhero goes everywhere with Ma and brings her great comfort. Ma loves going to op shops and getting new clothes for her companion teddy. “Living on the edge of the Kaipara, near the family homestead, is a place of refuge for them. They get fish dropped to them, and they pass on what they don’t need to others. “Even last week, when their work at the food bank was finished, they were out delivering watermelon and food from their own resources. Their giving is like an endless pot.

“They are known for helping people at their lowest time, and it has not gone unnoticed by those who have come across them. It is nice that people have given back to them as well. “It is wonderful that we are still all together, and being in their late 70s, they have accomplished much. “The food bank is still going and run by the community. Ant Pedersen at Jaques Four Square is now the chairperson, and the organisation is run by a committee. The proceeds from the food bank op shop, which is still at the town hall, also support the food bank. “There are no words that can express the gratitude that we have for our mum and dad. We have seen it all, heard it all and felt it all. We are thankful to the community for rallying around and giving with all they have to make the food bank successful. “Ma and Pa are a phenomenal couple, and we are proud of what they have achieved. They have left a legacy with our family and the community of giving selflessly.” ¢

Chicken and Leek Pie u by Deb Wright

I know it’s too hot for pies at the moment, but this is just one of those recipes you can have at any time of the year with a salad in the summer or mashed potatoes and broccoli at the cooler times of the year. INGREDIENTS 1–2 tbsp olive oil 1 large leek 1 medium carrot 500g chicken breast 2 medium zucchini 300ml chicken stock 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard (optional) 2 tbsp sour cream or cream 1 sheet puff pastry

METHOD Heat the oil in a frypan over a medium heat. Slice the leek thinly and fry the leek in the oil. Finely dice the carrot and add to the pan. Continue to sauté the leek and carrot until both are tender and fragrant (approx five minutes). Dice the chicken. Add this to the frypan and seal the chicken; it does not need to be browned all over, it will cook in the stock — which you add next. Add the stock, grate the zucchini and add this too. Bring to the boil, then

reduce to a simmer. Leave the mix to simmer for 20–30 mins; you want the liquid to reduce right down as this will be the filling of your pie. If it’s too liquidy, you end up with pie soup! You will think there is not enough liquid, but as the zucchini cooks, it releases moisture too, so try to wait before you add extra stock. Once the chicken and veggie mix has reduced down, turn off the heat and stir through the mustard and sour cream or cream. Grease a pie dish and transfer the chicken and veggie mix into the pie dish.

Top with puff pastry. Pierce the pastry with a knife to create a few holes for steam to escape, and if you have the inclination, brush the pastry with a little melted butter. Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes or until the pastry is golden. This pie is very versatile. You can add a ½ cup of mushrooms and two rashers of bacon and omit the carrot and zucchini if you want. You may need to add a little flour if the liquid is too runny. ¢
