“What an achievement to be proudly serving our communities for all of these years,” says Four Square Kaiwaka owner Ant Pedersen. “The 98th birthday celebrations are a testament to the Four Square brand and how we have been serving our customers and communities, and we are looking forward to our 100-year celebrations in two years’ time. “The household name Four Square emerged in the 1920s out of the Foodstuffs grocery buying co-operative. Foodstuffs’ founder, Mr J Heaton Barker, was concerned about the activities of the grocery chain stores of the day, making life very difficult for independent grocers in Auckland. “On July 6 1922, he called together members of the Auckland Master

gold handpainted glass panels for display in members’ stores. “On April 1 1925, this buying group registered a company, Foodstuffs Ltd, later Foodstuffs Auckland Ltd, the first of three regional co-operatives based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, which now form the Foodstuffs group of co-operatives. “New Zealand’s first self-service grocery store was opened in Onehunga in February 1948 by the son of the founder of the group Phil Barker and Ray McGregor. This soon became the norm for grocery retailing. “Foodstuffs’ advertising department designed the famous Mr Four Square in the 1950s. He initially appeared in newspaper advertising and posters but was developed to become part of the

Grocers’ Association to discuss the formation of a co-operative buying group of independent grocers. “On July 4 1924, he was talking on the telephone to one of the buying group members and drew a square around the four of the date on his calendar, and the name Four Square emerged. “He immediately realised he had a suitable name for the buying group, stating that they would stand Four Square to all the winds that blew. “By the end of 1924, products were appearing under the Four Square name, and by 1929, discussions began on the use of a common branding on stores. Early versions of the Four Square sign were produced in the form of red and

Four Square identity. He appeared in every Four Square store, and eventually became a nationally recognised icon in New Zealand, remaining famous to this day. “The Kaiwaka team here at Jaques love seeing our regulars as well as new faces that are coming into town or just popping in on their way through. “Our staff are amazing, and we all share the same desire to provide good customer service to our community. At the recent Foodstuffs Checker of the Year Awards, we finished in the top ten thanks to our store manager Alice Tay and took out Best Supporting Store. “We really are a community within a community and enjoy our work, and hope that comes across during your visit to the store.” ¢

Reducing construction waste

July 15 2022

Sustainable Kaipara has launched its new project Building Out Waste Mangawhai, a feasibility study on construction waste. “We launched the project on Monday to tackle construction waste in Mangawhai with funding from the Ministry for the Environment,” says Sustainable Kaipara’s Sarah Bray. “We were really pleased with how the event went with our team, community representatives, project supporters, community leaders and council members in attendance. MP for Northland Willow-Jean Prime and Mayor Jason Smith both came along, which was lovely, as they were at the Sustainable Kaipara launch nearly two years ago to the day. “Building Out Waste is a feasibility study to evaluate viable options for the diversion of construction waste in Mangawhai. The Mangawhai area is one of the fastest-growing residential areas in New Zealand, with its population expected to more than double by 2051, making up 86 per cent of Kaipara’s population growth over the next 30 years, creating a building boom. “Construction and demolition waste makes up 40–50 per cent of New Zealand’s total waste to landfill. For new builds it is estimated that between 2,233m³ of waste is generated per house. This is a significant issue for a semi-rural

community with massive population growth and no landfill within the district. The study will complete an independent report that quantifies the size and scope of construction waste in Mangawhai and incorporates Te Ao Māori perspectives and an implementation plan for potential solutions and approaches. “We will also run an industry engagement campaign to understand and bring awareness to the building waste issue in Mangawhai. “The project is funded through the competitive Waste Minimisation Fund from the Ministry for the Environment. Co-funded by Vermont Street Partners, who are keen to support better construction waste management. Other project partners include Smith Construction and Finess Group, and ITM Mangawhai are project supporters. “Sustainable Kaipara will be hosting a trade breakfast in a couple of months and will be inviting all tradespeople and anyone else interested to come along to ITM Mangawhai. At the breakfast, we will be looking at obstacles and solutions to the construction waste issue. People can follow the Sustainable Kaipara Facebook page to keep up to date on when this will be.” ¢

p Dan and Ange Klink with their children outside their new family venture

p Lennox and Lola were happy to attend the store opening

Klink’s new venture u by Ann van Engelen

Dan and Ange Klink, the owners of Mangawhai Meat Shop, have embarked on a new venture in Mangawhai adding the Klink’s Family Deli to their business portfolio. “We decided to open the deli because we saw a need in the area,” says Dan. “It is something that we always wanted to look into, and the shop became available at the Heads by the bakery and fish and chip shop — so we jumped at the opportunity. The owner worked well with us to get it to where we wanted it with a nice scene and atmosphere. “Aaron McConchie, a designer and builder has done a fantastic fit-out for us — we were lucky to get him. He created exactly what we had in our minds. It

was amazing how he plucked our ideas from our brains. He also gave us a meat cleaver door handle that he made at home, especially for us, which was such a lovely gesture and fitted the shop well. “We stock all sorts of things like condiments, sauces, meat rubs and pasta. There is a huge selection of gluten-free products and ready-to-heat things like pizza and Asian dumplings and lots of really good New Zealand and imported cheeses and salamitype meats.”

HANDYMAN SERVICES

The deli also stocks a selection of meat from Mangawhai Meats. “There is a massive rotisserie that can cook 42 chickens at once, and we have a great range of salads and family pies. It really is a one-stop shop, and our staff are fantastic. Ange and I float between the two shops. “For us, it is where we want to be in business. The butcher shop is changing too, and we will be able to offer a certain amount of our products at both stores. “Mangawhai is an awesome place to live. The response we have had from the community has been amazingly supportive. The town itself is getting fully behind us, and as it grows, I guess

we will continue to grow with it. Klink’s Family Deli officially opened on Friday, July 1, and we are open seven days a week. “We are looking forward to a positive future, and as we grow and find our feet, we plan to diversify the products we will stock. At present, I am in the midst of preparing for the World Butchers’ Challenge in Sacramento as a Sharp Blacks team member representing New Zealand. “To be chosen to represent our country was amazing, and it will be nice to showcase my ability in the butcher world and put Mangawhai on the map.” ¢

Joining forces for nature

July 15 2022

u by Ann van Engelen

Paul and Liz Grace, and Melissa Holloway came up with the idea to try and reduce the overabundance of seaweed washing up at Waipū Cove by establishing a riparian planting resource to reduce nutrient run-off from the land. “We are surfers, and one night we were moaning about the amount of weed in the ocean,” says Paul. “One day, Liz went for a kayak and saw fish dying through lack of oxygen in the water near the boat club. We thought maybe we couldn’t do anything about the sea situation, but we can certainly help with the land. “We discussed what we could do and began investigating why there was so much weed. We met with Rick Stolwerk from the Northland Regional Council,

the water quality. So we decided to merge and join forces to try and help the situation. “We became Waipū Waters, and then we placed ourselves under the wing of the Piroa-Brynderwyn Landcare Group. They are very active, organised and structured, looking after our flora, fauna, pests, land, sea, air and coast. “Our main objective is to become a riparian planting resource for farmers and landowners and, from the community perspective, to help the

and he suggested we start a group, and we began Waipū Water Watch. “Our research led us to the discovery that the weed that washes up at the beach is a native plant that grows offshore. We suspect that nutrients that go out into the ocean from the land make it grow faster, making us look at our local freshwater quality. “We then had meetings with NRC and Whangārei District Council, and we got enthusiastic with ideas, but when Covid hit — it stopped everything.” “Eventually, the Waipū River Walk Group, which created the walking track around Waipū, also looked at

environment by reducing nutrient runoff into the sea. “We have also been able to educate school children with the help of DOC, and they learned to check the water in the Waihoihoi stream and the importance of fish, eels, invertebrates and other living organisms. “Our investigations found that most plants being propagated in nurseries around the area are presold a long way out, and we had no money to buy any. “It was through PBL that we discovered a disused nursery on David Brown’s land in Waipū, and he welcomed us to resurrect it. Since NRC has mandated

fencing and riparian planting, we feel there is a need, and we are a resource to assist landowners that the community can be involved in too. “Local Peter Grant is captaining the Waipū Waters ship, and there is great community support for the project. Our first two meetings at the nursery were working bees, and we had up to 25 people arrive to clear the weeds and tidy up. “Our aim is to grow 20,000 plants, and when the nursery is up and running, we will liaise with landowners and farmers to assist them in planting on their properties.” For more information, people can follow the Waipū Waters Facebook page. ¢

July 15 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Potted tranquility u by Liz Clark

It’s rated in the top ten indoor air-cleansing plants, providing year-round beauty and purewhite flowers during the warmer months. Spathiphyllum or peace lily is native to South America and is found growing in the shade of trees in tropical and subtropical regions. While its flowers resemble the canna lily, it isn’t classified as a true lily. Rather, it’s a member of the Araceae family. The showy white blooms or spathes appearing during the warmer months resemble the white of a peace flag — hence the reference. Peace lilies have an upright growing habit, reaching up to one metre in height depending on the variety. However, regardless of type, they thrive in medium to low-light conditions and will tolerate partial shade. Plants given more light will flower more often than those given less exposure. It makes them the ideal choice for rooms with small windows or blocked from the sun by fences or trees. They fit well into any decor, including commercial office environments providing living colour through their richly coloured bronzegreen foliage and white spathes. The best thing is they are low-maintenance plants that can take some neglect from time to time. However, regular care will ensure a healthy, vibrant and disease-resistant house plant that will last for many years to come. Peace lilies can outgrow their pots quite quickly. Provide a slightly larger pot each time you repot your plant. Use a good quality potting mix, preferably one formulated for house plants, for best results. Repotting should be done at least twice a year. Split the plant if it is too large for the available root space in the pot. Before repotting, water the plant thoroughly, allow it to drain and then place it in its new pot. Keep the potting soil on the slightly moist side. Too dry, and the plant will wilt and have issues with water uptake into the root system. Too wet, the root system will rot resulting in the loss of the entire plant. Feed once a month with a general fertiliser to ensure good plant health and growth. It’s essential to note peace lilies are toxic to pets and young children. They should be kept out of reach to prevent accidental poisoning by ingesting the leaves and flowers. Visit your local garden centre or look online for availability and more plant care and advice. ¢

p With 20 years experience in surfing, Ellen and Grae enjoy helping would-be surfers learn the ropes of the sport

p Ellen and Grae Selling opened Surf Shack Waipū for surfers to have easier access to products locally

All about surfing u by Ann van Engelen

Ellen and Grae Selling and Henry Wong love all things surf and purchased Learn2Surf Waipū Cove five years ago and recently opened the Surf Shack Waipū to provide necessities for surfers. “Grae and I met in the water surfing, and we both love everything about the sport, it is our life, and there was a real need for a local shop,” says Ellen. “I have travelled the world surfing after learning 20 years ago in Western Australia. Grae grew up surfing out Ocean Beach way in Whangārei Heads, and he moved to Victoria, Australia when he was 16 years old, and surfed a lot over there. “There has been a need for a shop as we had outgrown stocking our products at home. The opportunity came up to open Surf Shack Waipū at 11 The Centre, Waipū, at the end of January, so we went for it.

“Grae and I enjoy sharing what we love with people and teaching them to surf well. We love building other people’s confidence, whether they are already surfing or new to the sport. We run lessons for children from five-year-olds to 60s-plus, but at present, the surf school is closed for winter. “To us, the school is about sharing our knowledge of the ocean with those who want to learn to surf. It is as easy as four steps to stand up on the board and a few other factors. If people have spent their life in the sea, it is easier as they have more knowledge of how it works than those who have no sea experience. Fitness is also a defining factor.

25 year warranty on roof panels that create shade without losing light

“The shop was really needed as the closest to here is Whangārei or Mangawhai, so if someone broke a leg rope or fin, it was a long way to go to get a new one. We are trying to cater for everyone’s needs, not just people coming to the surf school.” People are able to purchase items such as new fins, surfboards, wet suits and all surfing accessories at the store. “We have a range of the Salty Crew label, our own gear that we have had local artists design and various other logos. Our ethos is using New Zealand and Australian-made products, and we source as local as possible with products that we have personally tried and tested,

Our structures are proudly New Zealand designed and manufactured for the coastal environment. Low maintenance Duratec powdercoating finish with 6mm structural aluminium rivets used to create a minimal but robust frame, supporting a range of polycarbonate panels to suit your needs. Add a lean to on your shed or cover an area to shut out the weather while retaining light. Modular kits will be available for those who want to install their own

such as Earth’s Kitchen sunscreen based in Mangawhai. “The surf school starts lessons again in October, in time for the term three school holidays, and we are looking forward to meeting people at the shop too, as we are open seven days. “Our Instagram page is surf_Waipū_ Cove, and Facebook is Learn 2 surf Waipū cove or surf shack Waipū for the shop. “We love the area and are very community focussed. To help people utilise the amazing cycle and walkways in the area, we are stocking e-bikes for purchase or hire. We also hire surf gear as well.” ¢

p Deb Osborne performed her first wedding recently in Queenstown for her niece Sian and her now-husband Hamish MacPherson

Making things official u by Ann van Engelen

Kaiwaka resident Deb Osborne recently decided it was time to follow her dream of becoming a celebrant to help people celebrate important occasions in life such as weddings. “I grew up in East Auckland and went to Pakuranga College before living in Australia for 10 years travelling. I returned to New Zealand in 1999,” says Deb. “I worked in fashion, and my hobby was music. I returned to New Zealand in 1999, and worked at DeBretts resort singing in a band and met my husband,

later changed direction from clothing to kayaks and things. “I have worked from home for 14 years, and we moved to an old community hall that was turned into a home at Kaiwaka seven years ago. Colin does canvas repairs from home, like the clear screens on the side of houses, trailer covers and peoples’

blinds, shade sails and boat covers. It has been an opportunity that created itself that he loves. “Bo is leaving school this year, and it was time for me to find something new. I have always fancied being a marriage celebrant. I finished my job with Container Door in February and completed the celebrant school course,

At my niece’s wedding, it was lovely to dress up and see people in their finest clothing with happy smiling faces

Colin. Colin had arrived from England, and his friend worked in the bar. “Our meeting was a true love story, and we are best friends — 22 years later, we are still happily married. “We purchased a little cottage in Ruawai as a getaway from the busyness of Auckland on weekends when our son Bo was four years old. We then decided to move to Ruawai permanently, and I worked for Container Door from home. It was a fashion importer at the time and

handbags when the handle breaks and things. “His business is called The Governor Stitched Me Up, which is a very English saying. He used to work for Canvas Plus in Kaiwaka, but they now do more commercial clients. They have been very helpful with setting up his own business to look after the smaller jobs for community members. “Colin loves that he can help people with things like caravan awnings and

and I am now registered with births, deaths and marriages. “It was challenging changing direction after so long, but I think I can offer something formal and fun as people have different expressions and are from all walks of life. At first, I found it terrifying, but it is exciting and wonderful. “I performed my first wedding last month, which was for my niece Sian, who heard I was doing the course, and I

p Deb Osborne has chosen to become a marriage celebrant to bring a personalised touch to people’s weddings and other special occasions

p Colin uses his canvas work skills to help people with the repairs of various items at The Governor Stitched Me Up

p Deb believes listening to what people want and drawing out their personalities is important

p Helping ensure the small details are taken care of, Deb wants each occasion to have good memories

It was challenging changing direction after so long, but I think I can offer something formal and fun as people have different expressions and are from all walks of life have had some lovely feedback from that wedding. A friend has since asked me to be her master of ceremony, and I look forward to many more opportunities. “There are two things that made me want to be a celebrant. Firstly, my mum died of Alzheimer’s, and when organising her funeral, we felt there was a lot to be said about how we want ceremonies in our lives to flow. “The second thing was during the lockdowns, people said they couldn’t attend things like weddings, funerals and important celebrations. They realised how important significant occasions are, and it was often spoken about the need for gatherings to be made more memorable. “Some weddings, it is like the celebrant doesn’t even know the couple. Friends said I’d be good as a celebrant and could offer something different because I love people and they love me, so I embarked on the idea. “All the women I met on the course are so different with what they offer.

Some are religious-based, some are alternative or pagan, some want to officiate on marae, and I thought there was a place for me in our community. “At the celebrant school, they teach you their procedures to organise a ceremony. The ceremony is to bring family and friends together, and the stories make the day memorable for what you hope is a lifelong love affair. “My niece’s wedding was in Queenstown with 50 people in attendance. They didn’t want any frills — it was a relaxed, joyful event and very heartfelt. I was nervous, but surprised people didn’t notice. The hardest thing was not crying, seeing my beautiful niece walk down the aisle on my brother’s arm. “To me, it is important that the occasion is something that people can look back on with nice memories. It is nice being able to bring important things to them into the day. You don’t want it too short, and you don’t want it so long and boring that people fall asleep.

“No matter if it is a wedding, birthday or a funeral you are officiating, you must be able to listen and understand what your client wants you to do. You need to be able to draw the story out and bring in memories when necessary. “There may be other children that are joining the family through a marriage. You have to hear the person’s heart and what they want you to express during the service. Thankfully, the celebrant school has people who will advise you if you find something difficult. “I initially thought I would start with funerals but decided to begin with weddings, and will ultimately do the celebrants’ funeral module as well. The ladies at the school said there is beauty and magic in taking a funeral and helping people to celebrate a life. “Whether short or long, every life is important and, as there is a grieving process, the ceremony is critical for those of us left behind. “Even with weddings, you are facilitating people’s emotions while you

bring them together. With the end of life, you have to help them go through the process of saying goodbye. “It is wonderful to see families gathering with more than 10 people appreciating things so much more since the Covid lockdown. “At my niece’s wedding, it was lovely to dress up and see people in their finest clothing with happy smiling faces, particularly after the time with Covid. “Kaiwaka is an amazing community, and the people are very supportive and like to support one another’s growth. We have been very lucky, I think, to move here, and we enjoy helping people through The Governor Stitched Me Up and now my celebrant work. “I am looking forward to seeing if there is a need for my services at weddings or other celebrations. I am excited to be able to give people something to help make their dreams come true. That is what it is all about, bringing a bit of joy back into the world.” ¢

Exercise with baby u by Ann van Engelen

One Tree Point resident Elly Givney started Ninja Mums to help mothers of newborn babies to exercise with the opportunity to meet new people. “I am a qualified personal trainer and a pre and postnatal coach for fitness and began Ninja Mums in the middle of March when my little one, Harvey, was 12 weeks old,” says Elly. “My husband Sam and I moved here from Australia nearly six years ago. He was given the opportunity to work at the refinery, and we thought we would be here for a couple of years. We had been to New Zealand before but not this far north, and we love it here. “My main business is Ninja Fitness here in Ruakākā and Whangārei. It is ladies-only classes, including boxing and weights, and a huge variety of other exercises on-site or online. “When Harvey was born, I wanted to get a bit more niche and decided to offer postnatal classes, which I hold in

Whangārei, and I am about to launch online. I will get into prenatal exercise in the near future. “I am focussing on postnatal care because it is super important for women to safely get back into exercise when they are ready after having a baby. Your body goes through huge changes, and exercising safely is critical, and it is a great way to meet other mums. “The classes focus on movement and exercise, and we also go for coffee together and organise other socialising opportunities. To me, it is about building a community for new mums to meet other mums as well.” Ninja Mums learn correct stretching and exercise techniques and focus on specific body parts. “We learn about particular sore or tender areas after birth, such as the neck and back from breastfeeding and strengthening the pelvic floor area. I teach pelvic floor breathing as part of the warm-up because many women have never been taught how to do pelvic floor work properly. “I also work on minimising the abdominal separation from pregnancy. To me, it is about educating women to look after their bodies through safe exercise. People can check out my Ninja Mums Facebook page for updates. “I have seen a lot of mums step out of their comfort zone and make friends with other mums. It is great to see them gain confidence in themselves and their bodies again. I see a lot of attitude changes from women being shy or too hard on themselves to being confident and excited about their journey. “Everyone brings their babies, and we do the exercise with baby, or baby can
