p Mangawhai’s sand mining opposition is rallying on July 10 to highlight the ongoing fight to put an end to a practice which organiser Ken Rayward calls unsustainable and damaging

The first big Save Our Sands (SOS) day in 2021 gathered hundreds of locals to form a human rescue message spelt out in giant letters on the seacoast. Since then, sand mining resource consents have been lined up in Auckland Council’s chambers, and the first of three has been denied, thanks in great part to a concerted effort by the SOS group, Friends of Pākiri, Greenpeace Aotearoa, conservation groups and the civic leadership of both Kaipara and Northland. “As our prior generation stood up to protect Mangawhai for our current generation, it is now upon us to stand up and protect Mangawhai for future generations,” says sand mining opponent and community organiser Ken Rayward. “They have been taking thousands of tonnes of sand from this nonreplenishing resource for decades, and

now the community, local iwi, our elected leaders and the people are saying enough is enough.” With two resource consent hearings left to go, opponents of sand mining, which is conducted using a floating dredge vessel, have mustered a case which seeks to prove the environmental harm already inflicted. The first consent for deep-water mining was quashed earlier this year but may face an appeal. The final two relate to mining even closer to the shore. On July 10, at 10am, those who wish to see an end to sand mining off the east Kaipara coast are invited to gather for a second SOS day, highlighting the fact that the fight is not yet over. Kaipara District Mayor Jason Smith will be a keynote speaker, and has reiterated his intent to personally attend the resource consent hearing in Auckland to voice his opposition. ¢

The team working on the Mangawhai Historic Village and the Daring preservation project has been making headway on both assignments. “It was a year on May 4 that the Daring arrived home in Mangawhai after more than 150 years buried under the sands of Muriwai,” says Mangawhai Daring Trust chair Jim Wintle. “It is with huge thanks to the dedicated and tireless work from the volunteers. Everyone involved has contributed in many ways, and we are always impressed by the huge level of community enthusiasm and support for the Daring and the historic village. “Work on the vessel has progressed very well under the direction of trustee Dave Fredric and his team Peter Joyce, Tony Heath and Bert Sainsbury, who also look after the Mangawhai Historic Village. “We are currently in discussion as to the final resting place for the Daring and will be announcing our plans when these are finalised. We are also pleased to have a new water spray unit to wet the ship down rather than hosing it every day. It sprays a mist over the boat, keeping it at the right wetness while it is being worked on. “March saw Mangawhai Community Park’s new toilets formally opened with a blessing at the Historic Village. The toilets mean better facilities for visitors to the Mangawhai Historic Village, as they visit the historic buildings from the area that have been restored for community and educational use. “The materials and colours used on the new toilets’ exterior are in keeping with the historic buildings in the village.

p Daring volunteer Bert Sainsbury is thankful for the new water mister, which will keep the ship wet while being preserved

Funding was provided by the Tourism Infrastructure Fund. The latest news on the village is thanks to Hayden and Kat Jones of Heritage Homes, the team has been able to continue the restoration of the old church, which is home to Mangawhai Movies.” Hayden and Kat are big supporters of Mangawhai Movies and kindly provided the materials to paint the old church and Tara School. “Heritage Homes is all about building traditional-style homes, and we feel that the Mangawhai Historic Village is a fantastic fit for our brand. We place a lot of value on heritage buildings and feel it is important they are preserved for New Zealand history.

p Dave Fredric helps to oversee the preservation of the Daring project

“The guys doing the work are absolutely amazing and always so welcoming and willing to share their knowledge and even explain how each thing is made for the Daring. They are very passionate about everything they do. “The job they do at the village is to a very high standard, they are all master craftsmen, and we really value that and their input as a company.” Jim says the Daring now has its own website, thanks to Emma McDermott, to keep people up to date on how the Daring Discovery Centre is progressing. “We have also added a donate button to make it really easy to help out through each stage of the project — go to daring.org.nz.” ¢

Rotary celebrates first year u by Ann van Engelen

The members of Mangawhai Rotary looked back on a successful year of community projects as they celebrated the club’s first birthday last week. “Mangawhai Rotary, as we members like to refer to it, should officially be referred to as the Rotary Satellite Club of Maungaturoto-Mangawhai, but it’s a bit of a mouthful,” says chairman Dennis Emsley. “Most of our members are nonconformists, so we tend not to follow officialdom nor tradition anyway. “Rotary head offices, in some farflung part of America, like many Rotary

Students take international titles

u by Ann van Engelen

Attitude Archery sharpshooter and Rodney College Year 11 student Gage Laughton took out his first international event at the International Field Archery Association Pacific Regional Field Archery Championship 2022. Fifteen-year-old Gage is a member of Lake View Archery and also won the New Zealand Nationals, plus the IFAA series, which ran for the past four months. Gage’s friend Aleks Miernik also won his division, securing three records in the Pacific Region as well as three national records. “The competition was held at Mt Tiger Archery recently in Whangārei and was the nationals combined with the internationals,” says dad Lee Laughton. “Gage has been shooting for four years now, and took up the sport at the age of 10, to spend time with his grandparents, who are also involved with archery. “Gage and Aleks met as members of Massey Archery club and were in the same division at the time. Aleks comes to our farm and Wayby Valley Archery every school holiday. They practise on the course, or we go hunting in the forest behind us. “At 17 years old, Aleks came first in both the regionals and the nationals for the Young Adult Male Bowhunter Unlimited division. “Gage shoot s under junior classification, and took out the national series across New Zealand, and won

both of the events. He attended the NZIFAA series and then at the nationals and international competition over three days to take out both titles. “The first course was with marked distance circles, while the second half of the year will be 3D animal models out in the paddock, and you have to guess how far they need to shoot. He will need to work out the distance to shoot, such as 5 to 60 yards. “Gage has remained in the Attitude Archery team, and Linda Lainchbury is still his coach and mentor. She was very impressed that he is shooting far above his age. “We practise on our property at Wayby Valley Archery with the 3D model animal archery course, which is made to scale. You have to guess the distances of 35 targets — we hold events there as well. When people get too used to the targets in the same place, I move them to create more of a challenge. “Gage is absolutely over the moon. I am very proud of his accomplishments. He will get three records on the national level and is now practising hard for the second part of the national series. From here, he will continue training with Linda with the aim of attending the worlds in the future.” ¢

July 1 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

A fine lady indeed u by Liz Clark

With midwinter kicking in, spring planting is merely a matter of time before the garden comes to life in glorious living colour — it will be time for planting nerines. A relative of the amaryllis, nerines originated from South Africa and have been cultivated worldwide for more than two centuries. While it has more than 20 described species in its genus, only a tiny number are developed for the home garden. Globally, nerines are also known by the common names Guernsey lily, spider lily and Jersey lily; however, they aren’t lilies. Nerines are bulbous perennials; some are evergreen while others die back during summer. They produce trumpet-like flowers in a spiderlike arrangement and range in colour from white to pink and crimson shades on a leafless stem. Planting time is from September to late November. The flower spikes appear during autumn in established plants, followed by strap-like leaves in spring. Before planting your nerine bulbs in the garden, choose a sheltered, warm, sunny situation where they can be placed and left undisturbed long term. The soil should be well-drained, rich with organic matter and well-prepared before planting. The soil pH should be preferably around seven, which is neutral. However, nerines can grow in acidic and alkaline conditions but do better with

a more balanced soil medium. The bulbs should be planted shallowly, two-thirds below soil level 10-15cm apart. Avoid areas where the plants will be overshadowed by shrubs and overhanging branches. Water well and leave undisturbed. For planting in pots, use a good quality potting mix and compost and add bulb food, available from your local garden centre. Pots should be large enough to accommodate the roots, which should be spread out carefully when planting. As with planting in a garden situation ensure your containers are placed in a position where the nerines can get plenty of sunlight throughout the day. During flowering, the pots can be brought inside and enjoyed. Once finished, they can be placed back outside until the following autumn. During the first year, newly planted bulbs may not flower. However, most will come up the following year. Keep them well fed with a highpotash fertiliser and protected from heavy frosts during the winter months in colder areas with a layer of mulch. Available cultivars include Salmon Queen, Aristocrat, Cranfield and Virgo. Talk to your local garden centre professional or search online for more information. ¢

Local communities celebrated Matariki in various ways last week, with the Bream Bay community celebrating their third Matariki festival through a celebration of kapa haka, kai, and whanaungatanga. Waipū, Ruakākā, One Tree Point Primary schools and Bream Bay College joined together for a festival at Bream Bay College, creating an opportunity to experience an evening under the stars in celebration of Matariki and te Tau hou Māori. Kaiwaka Primary was involved with the Matariki event at Matakohe Museum, and Mangawhai School planted trees, and the community joined together at Te Whai Community House.

Lolling in 30-degree temperatures with a cocktail in the pool after only a three and an hour plus flight is such a treat, especially now that we no longer take travel for granted. “Our clothing suppliers are upping their ante again to provide for these summer excursions with options that are trans-seasonal. We’ve had them before, and since the word travel is now back in our vocabulary, they have hastily resurfaced. These lightweight essential ‘wash at night, dry by morning’ basics that can be worn at 30 degrees plus, with comfort are right back in demand. “For those of you hunkering on down or preferring to travel later in the year, there is only good news. “We can either sit out our chilly season, relishing in all the delights winter offers, or pack our bags, stash our boarding passes and head off to the sunny side of the world for a taste of someplace else’s summer,” says Polwarth Design’s company director Karen Matich. “For those who choose to sit out winter, it’s time to pamper yourself with all the clothing treats colder weather offers. It’s a great time for sourcing that new jumper, coat or merino pants to replace the tired or moth-nibbled ones in your wardrobe. “Here at Polwarth Design, wool is always a popular choice for winter and Bridge and Lord’s cashmere and merino knitwear is the best. p Flowers are harvested as required to guarantee Anna’s floral arrangements are as fresh as possible

A boutique florist u by Ann van Engelen

Anna Alison from Flourish Florist Bream Bay says she enjoys nothing better than spending time growing flowers that she can use for the floral arrangements she creates. “For the first five years of my life, I grew up in Ruakākā before moving away with my family,” says Anna. “When I married my husband Bruce, we built a home in One Tree Point. We then sold that house and bought a property with a big section because we love landscape design and gardening. “I had been teaching for 17 years and during the first lockdown decided maybe

the Ruakākā Recreation Centre opposite Bream Bay College.” Anna makes bouquets for all types of occasions, including funerals, weddings and special events. “I have also been supporting an organisation called Joyya World. Joyya World is a group of Kiwis that pioneer the organisation formally known as Freeset. Joyya is in Kolkata, India, and supports

then thought I could sell other people’s creative products too because if we can encourage each other — we are all benefitting. “I have soap from the Soap Collective in Waipū and Dirty Hippy products like shampoo and conditioner body bars. “I sell my sister Miriam Gavin’s pottery. She is amazing at glazes and uses phenomenal colours. She makes

I want people to come to my garden and enjoy the journey while learning about flowers and plants I could do something with the flowers I grow, and I taught myself floral arranging by watching YouTube. “We decided I could figure things out as we went. We began Flourish Bream Bay to supply locally made gifts and floral arrangements made with my freshly picked, spray-free seasonal flowers. “I was located on Bream Bay Road but needed to move, and now I have my little cabin at 9 Takutai Place. I am now nice and central, on the grounds of

local women to become self-sufficient and gain fair employment. “Joyya care about the whole wellbeing of the person. I sell their products and contribute toward their social enterprise.” Anna is a micro or urban flower farmer and loves all things creative. “My passion is to not buy flowers from afar but to grow my own or support local growers such as Catherine from Orange Tree Flower Farm here in One Tree Point. “Catherine and I do lots together as it is about locals supporting locals. I

bowls and mugs and soap holders with the drain on them and we have macrame wall hangings with pottery discs. “My in-laws do wooden art from reclaimed repurposed timber off their farm, such as bud vases, soap dishes and platters, wooden pens and much more. “My long-term vision is to build the experience side of the business so people can be confident putting flowers in a vase. Experience is at the heartbeat of my business rather than

just selling flowers. Using my teaching skills, I have enjoyed presenting basic flower workshops. “I want people to come to my garden and enjoy the journey while learning about flowers and plants. One goal is to provide DIY weddings, where I show brides what to do and support them and their bridal party to create their own bouquets. “Drying my own flowers is also something I am proud of. It is very complex and all about having a warm dark room and being separate from the fresh flowers that need cool. To look after them, display them out of the direct sun, and they will last for years. “Locally grown flowers are important to me. People don’t realise that our imported flowers have to be dipped in glyphosate, which is the chemical in Roundup. They then put their flowers on their cakes or smell them and that isn’t very healthy. I use organic-certified sprays, and only when necessary. “People often get 7–10 days from my arrangements because I pick the

morning they are needed. They go out that day, rather than being in cool storage for a number of weeks if I buy from the auction floor. “I grow seasonal flowers and love dahlias as they are so productive and fit with my garden style of arrangements. I like whimsical and airy, not dense structure. At the moment, I am enjoying using larkspur which is like a mini delphinium. “I love pastels and whatever flower is in season and use a huge range more flowers than what florists generally use. I like beautiful snapdragons and adding texture to bouquets, which is especially great for wedding work. “To look after flowers, it is best to keep them out of direct sunlight and add a teaspoon of sugar to your water as feed. Add a drop of bleach to stop the bacteria growing, and a drop of lemon juice to keep the pH level right to help the cells drink. Recut your stems every few days and change the water daily for optimum life. “What I really appreciate about my shop is seeing people. I love hearing

their stories, especially the elderly, when they come in. “I love gardening and getting my hands in the dirt. I feel gardening is creative, and I love sowing the seeds and preparing beds, making compost, planting seedlings and picking my beautiful flowers before I can get arranging. “In spring and summer, I am up at sunrise picking by 5.30am, and that is my happy place. It is so quiet, and you hear the birds singing — it is a beautiful time of day. “My garden is 1,400sqm, and I lease a fraction of land from Encounter Church. I am really grateful for my daughters Mia and Katie, who ask to sow seeds and are amazing pickers. They know how to pick good blooms and make beautiful bouquets. “My fresh flowers have much more fragrance — there is something amazing about having the scent in the home or office. “Flowers show gratitude and are a beautiful gesture that goes a long way. I sell my flowers at Cuppacakes in John

Street, Whangārei and also deliver to central Whangārei and anywhere around the One Tree Point to Waipū area. “For me, to be a successful flower gardener, Bruce has built many garden beds for me, and his support has been incredible. It is really hard work because if things go wrong, you still have to pick for that order. When the storm comes through and destroys your crop, you still need to do that wedding, and Bruce supports me and is an amazing husband. “With children, it is important to have that family support, and I couldn’t do it without Bruce. “I am at flourishbreambay on Facebook and Instagram. I once read that if you buy from a small business you are helping the parents pay for their family, not the CEO, to have a brand new car, and that is important to us. “Anytime is a good time to send flowers or gifts because who doesn’t love getting flowers. They help brighten up someone’s day and make them feel special. People say I am living their best life, and I am.” ¢

Artists beautify township u by Ann van Engelen

Mangawhai Artist Gallery members Jay Allen and Mel Juer were chosen to collaborate together on the project to design and paint a mural at the Paparoa toilets. Geraldine Jenkins and Stu and Janice Roberston were commissioned to do artwork installed at the car park. “As artists who live in the area, we were inspired by our local flora and fauna here in Kaipara,” says Mel. “We wanted to include a wide range of birds and wildlife to reflect the diversity of our community, with a diverse range of cultures, beliefs and backgrounds that make up the beautiful place we live in. “The mural reflects the seasons and natural cycles of the environment around us. We designed it with a moon and night

scene on the one side and bright sun and forest scene on the other. I painted those segments, and Jay completed the front and back, which is a beautiful Kaipara water and birds scene. “The same scene is shown from under the water on the back of the building. There are lots of interesting creatures and fish, and the children in the playground love these.” The project began in January and took three months to finish. “We started the project in midJanuary and finished it just before the winter really set in, sometime in May. It

was lovely to meet many of the locals who passed through the village whilst we were doing the work. “So many people had lovely things to say when we were there. The children who visited the playground while we were working were always keen to see if there were new birds or creatures appearing as Jay was working on the back. “Jay is well known for beautiful birds, often produced through printmaking and mixed media drawing. Jay and I are both members of the Mangawhai Gallery. Jay will be exhibiting at the gallery in December this year. I will also be exhibiting later in December in a dual show. “I work in oil paintings and ink on paper. My style is colourful and expressive, inspired by our ever-

changing skies, landscape and seasons and the vast open landscape that is the Kaipara.” The official opening of the artworks was held last Friday during Matariki at the Paparoa Village Green. “It was an awesome opening and celebration of two new murals for Paparoa,” says Paparoa Connections coordinator Libby Jones. “The painting at the car park was designed by Geraldine Jenkins and Stu and Janice Roberston, who created it. It is a representation of Paparoa village, the twin streams, landing, the pa site, bridge, and some of the landmark buildings. “Well done to Mel, Jay, Geraldine, Stu and Janice. Thanks to everyone who made it all happen. Planning on more art installations will follow.” ¢
