Honouring a life well lived. At Morris & Morris our focus has always been at providing a funeral that honours the life of the loved one that has passed away. It is important to us that we keep providing our community with the ability to say goodbye in a manner that is representative of the loved one that has passed away.

As qualified Funeral Directors we know that not having a proper goodbye can have severe implications for the family members who are left behind. Giving family members the opportunity to honour the life that was lived, not only encourages but delivers on healthy grieving.

Pink Ribbon Breakfast is where tens of thousands of Kiwis come together for good to raise vital funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. “This is our largest annual fundraising campaign, which takes place every May, but we have extended it until June 17 due to a lack of registrations,” says chief executive Ah-Leen Rayner. “A third fewer Pink Ribbon Breakfasts have been hosted this year, representing a drop in income of approximately $600,000. The charity is desperate to make up the shortfall to ensure its services aren’t impacted. It is urging

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for New Zealand women, with around 160 in the Northland DHB area diagnosed annually. The money raised from every Pink Ribbon Breakfast goes towards groundbreaking research, awareness and education programmes, and patient support services. Whangārei resident Jolene Purdy has hosted Pink Ribbon Breakfasts for the past 15 years. “I had breast cancer myself back in 2000, and I like to help the foundation with any little bit I can,” says Jolene.

more people in Northland to host their own Pink Ribbon Breakfast. “In our third year of the pandemic, and with an under-resourced health system, breast cancer patients are really feeling the effects. Since Covid-19, the demand for our support services has increased significantly. “Our specialist breast care nurses, who provide free tailored advice to thousands of women, are stretched to the limit, with four times as many calls coming into our 0800 support line. “We will always be there for patients, but if we can’t meet our fundraising target, it will limit the impact we can have. Please, sign up to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast to help make a difference for women going through breast cancer.”

“There are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes in ways of support that people don’t realise. When you are diagnosed with breast cancer, it is a huge shock, and the support team they have on hand is invaluable. “I just had my yearly check-ups, and it is all good. For my breakfasts, I like to make the setting pretty and have a sit-down meal with a glass of bubbles. The ladies who come donate money to the cause, and we have a nice time together.” Pink Ribbon events can be hosted anywhere, at any time, and registrations will close on June 17. p Brenda and Derrick Robinson with their five children at their new home

Sixty years married u by Ann van Engelen

Recent One Tree Point residents Brenda and Derrick Robinson celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 26. “Mum and dad were both raised in Whangārei, and each came from families of seven children,” says daughter Pip. “They have five children, 14 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. They recently moved to One Tree Point from Point Wells and have quickly made friends and connections in this warm community. “Both were sporty people and loved tennis. Dad was an excellent rower and squash player and built the first glass squash court in New Zealand. Mum was a netball player for many years. “When dad was young, he did his builder’s apprenticeship in Whangārei and worked until recently

when his health dictated a stop to his career.” Brenda was a nurse and completed her training at Whangārei Base Hospital and received a Queen’s Service Medal for her services to nursing. “She was an excellent nurse, and in her later years, she became an Ostomy Nurse Specialist who assisted patients following stoma surgery. Stoma surgery is when people can’t use their bowels anymore and have a bag put on them. The people she helped loved her for her caring and professional manner. They spent the majority of years raising us in Mairangi Bay on the North Shore and were well-loved in their communities.

25 year warranty on roof panels that create shade without losing light

“Dad built the first kitset modular house in the country and over the years has seen many changes in the building industry. The home they have now was built by GJ Gardener. “This was the first family home that Dad had not built, and they are over the moon with the quality. Dad absolutely loves it. All five children turned up, including my sister from Australia to move them in around nine weeks ago. “The GJ Gardener team said they had never seen such love or experienced such an occasion in all of their careers, as they handed over the keys. It was an amazing day.

“We had a 60th-anniversary party in Whangārei for the family, and it was a beautiful affair. It is nice to see our parents getting involved in the community here too. “Growing up, we had many happy years camping at Martins Bay, near Omaha, with a tent and boat. They have always loved living by the seaside, and it is nice that their love of the beach can continue here. “They had certainly made a lot of friends even though mum broke her arm when they moved in, that hasn’t stopped them, and they are both looking forward to the golden years ahead.” ¢

As well as celebrating 10 years in business, award-winning Mangawhai butcher Dan Klink is preparing to represent New Zealand in the Sharp Blacks team at the upcoming World Butchers’ Challenge this September in Sacramento, California, USA. “The World Butchers’ Challenge is a competition that started between New Zealand and Australia in 2011 as a little butcher rivalry,” says Dan. “England joined in 2013, and it became a tri-nations comp. Then in 2016, France entered, and in 2018, The World Butchers’ Challenge was formed. It became a beast of an event, and the last competition had 12 countries involved, and this one has 15. “I watched the event in 2018, and the Irish team had an amazing display.

“I am excited to represent New Zealand and be a part of it and put myself out on the world stage. We went through the selection process with the World Butchers’ Challenge selection committee, which selects the team that best fits the criteria of what they are trying to create. “Our team of six are from across New Zealand, and a few are already my good mates. They are award-winners in their own rights who have won national, regional and other competitions such

“We will have three and a half hours to prepare a side of beef and pork, a whole lamb and five chickens. The products we will make are current to the market like sausages and burgers. “The teams will be judged on creativity and display of products, overall skills and hygiene and the cookability and saleability of each item. I am guessing I will come home from America with new ideas too. “Just watching the last competition and seeing how different people around the world do things, their styles and

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

The bee’s knees of natives u by Liz Clark

When it comes to the idea of mānuka, most think of firewood or the superfood honey produced by domesticated bees. Leptospermum scoparium is found throughout the country mainly as a pioneering species on cleared sites and regeneration projects around waterways. However, the humble tea tree, as it is more commonly known, has been developed into a spectacular range of flowering cultivars by nurseries. A versatile plant, mānuka, can be mass planted for hedging purposes and shelterbelts for gardens and largescale planting projects. It thrives in clay and difficult soils as long as there is sufficient drainage available to prevent root rot. Wind and salt tolerant, they are

an excellent choice for exposed coastal sites where high winds are a constant issue and dry the ground out during the summer months. The best time for planting is during the autumn and winter months. Traditionally, plants of any kind have been placed into round planting holes to match the pot shape. However, a recent conversation with a horticulturalist has that tradition cast to the wayside. The advice given was enlightening, to say the least. The planting hole should be square rather than circular in shape. If planting

in clay, ensure the soil isn’t too wet or too dry. Place some manure at the bottom of the hole, followed by highquality compost from a reputable brand. Remove the plant from its pot, leave the roots undisturbed and then place it in position. Fill the rest of the hole with the original soil, then top with more compost. A slow-release fertiliser pellet will also help the roots obtain essential nutrients required for robust growth. Mānuka grows best on sites exposed to full sun. Soil conditions should lean towards being acidic pH4.5–6.5. The addition of mulch will conserve moisture

during the dry summer months; ensure it is kept away from the trunk. Light pruning can be done to encourage further bushy growth or for training into a hedge. While white flowers are more commonplace in naturally occurring habitats, the varieties developed by horticulturalists are available in varying shades of pink, red and cream. Available cultivars include Coral Candy, Cygnus, Electric Red, Magellan, Nanum Elizabeth Jane, Pink Cascade, Red Damask, Snow Flurry and Winter Cheer. For more information, talk to your local nursery or search online. ¢

Cruising on Argo u by Ann van Engelen

Luke, Ella and their children Kylie, Isaac and Lucie Christieson are cruising the country on their redesigned fishing boat Argo with their cat Radar. “We have been in Kaipara for a few weeks, and last week we had the pleasure of visiting Port Albert,” says Luke. “I grew up on my parents’ boat sailing, and we sailed around the world for eight years. By the time I was 13, I had learned a lot of practical skills, and I guess we are following in their footsteps. “I am an engineer by trade and was working in Nelson, and Ella homeschools the children. We had built a new house and had a mortgage and thought we didn’t want that to be life. “We sold the new house, bought an older home and bought Argo, an old fishing boat and gutted it ourselves back to the hull and rebuilt it with downstairs rooms and living space.

“On our first trip, we travelled up the east coast of the North Island as far as Whangaroa Harbour. That took us 14 months, and we are now on our second expedition. “We stay overnight between harbours and stay if we are enjoying ourselves. We stock up at local supermarkets with basic needs and go fishing, diving and hunting. “We recently visited Tinopai, Pahi and Dargaville and have met some really nice people. While in Dargaville, the boating club loaned us their club van, and we were able to go up to the kauri forest. “Someone took us to the Poutō lighthouse, which was an awesome experience with the sand dunes and

Electrical team powered up

Firm foundations from family firm

by Andy Bryenton

by Andy Bryenton

As a third-generation Bream Bay local, Shane Batten has seen his area grow at an incredible rate, fuelling a need for his services as a qualified electrician.

When a father and son team set out with a mission to become the best drain layers in Northland, that drive and determination became the foundation for success.

From a base in the hub of Marsden Point Road, Shane and his team can cover a wide area of the east coast, ranging as far as Mangawhai and inland to Waiotira, to keep the light on for their many customers. He says being the go-to guy for electrical services in the area means that the job is always varied. The Bream Bay zone spans luxurious holiday homes to commercial businesses and farms, all of which need safe, reliable power. “We’ve built this company from strength to strength, largely on the recommendations of happy customers,” says Shane. He now helms a crew of electrical experts with mobile workshop vans out on the east coast highways daily. “If it’s electrical, we can do it. We cover heating and ventilation, wiring and installations, lighting and power supplies,

Webb Contracting has worked down among the foundations of many projects, laying in a functional subterranean world of pipes to keep things flowing out of sight and trouble. As the business has grown, they have added even more construction and concrete skills to the portfolio. Bruce and Sam Webb founded Webb Contracting in 2007 from the family property in Kamo. Bruce previously worked as a self-employed drain layer applying his trade for 26 years. In 2007, Sam teamed up with his father after leaving school and started Webb Contracting. As customers cottoned on to the ‘Webb Contracting way’, clients demanded more. Hence, the team has grown. It now has the capability to deliver civil and building projects — no matter the size or complexity. These can even include general site works,

new home builds or renovation projects, and even marine systems and lighting. We do it all, and we do it well.” This broad focus works well with the kind of mixed community where Shane and his team work. Bream Bay and the wider east coast provide a varied snapshot of Kiwi life, encompassing the aforementioned baches and farms and all kinds of light industry, hospitality, family homes, orchards and many, many boats. Knowing the intricacies of HVAC and marine electrical means that there’s no need to seek a specialist from further afield. Shane Batten Electrical gathers all that knowledge under one roof. They even care for their customers with a 24/7 emergency service to save the day when disaster strikes. ¢

A reputation for quality workmanship has seen them invited to add their mark to projects like the Footsteps of Kupe cultural centre in Opononi, the America’s Cup Village, and Whangārei Hospital. There’s also a link to famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. While the visionary of colour and form was all about unique and fanciful architecture, the refurbished public toilets in Kawakawa and the arts centre in Whangārei bearing his name have drainlaying underpinnings laid down by Webb Contracting. ¢

p Steve Couchman says as a rescue chopper pilot he gets much satisfaction from helping people in their time of need

A collaboration of skills u by Ann van Engelen

Northland Rescue Helicopter pilot and base manager Steve Couchman says he has a huge amount of respect for the Intensive Care and Critical Care paramedics he works with at the organisation. Steve has been flying the choppers on and off since late 2000 and has a lot of flight hours to reflect on. “My mum is a Kiwi and dad is English, and I grew up in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay. I first joined the Northland rescue chopper service in late 2000,” says Steve. “I left in 2005 for a stint in Australia before joining Westpac Rescue in Auckland. Along the way, I flew

Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Northland Emergency Services Trust. “What gives me the most satisfaction is helping people in their time of need. I have always liked helicopters. “Vertical flight to me is the ultimate aircraft. of what could be called an extended OE in Australia and then Europe. “I returned to Australia and worked for two years to save up for my pilot’s licence, which I completed in 1995. While I was working, I studied for the various subjects for my licence by correspondence. “From there, I worked in the Northern Territory as ground crew and flew a small

Northern Rescue Helicopter Ltd is a joint venture between the Auckland

“One of the ultimate uses of a helicopter is winching. We have to use a whole collaboration of skills together when you are winching to boats and into the bush. When we are flying a winch job, we are very aware things could easily go wrong, so we are constantly doing a lot of risk assessment. “Ironically, I did not set out to obtain my Air Transport Pilot Licence when I left school. I first undertook four years

helicopter stock mustering. I then went to Sydney patrolling high-pressure gas pipelines from the air and then based myself out of Sale, east of Melbourne, as a co-pilot flying to 16 offshore oil rigs.” In nine months, Steve flew 650 hours in an S76. The next step was Northland Rescue Helicopter’s sole S76. “In recent years, I have also enjoyed the management side of my various

roles in the rapidly changing air ambulance sector. “The first job was doing touristy work on Kangaroo Island in South Australia and their version of the Department of Conservation. I also worked for a season in the Kimberley Ranges. Then I went back to training to obtain a high level of helicopter licence called Air Transport. “I returned to Westpac Rescue in Auckland for two and a half years before returning to Whangārei in 2009. I also carried out casual flying in Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay and Auckland. “My base management and flying roster dictate my daily activities as I split my time between the two roles. If I am on a flying day, we go into work at 8am and complete our aircraft safety checks to comply with regulations. “When we are on a mission, our first focus is checking the weather and getting to the location. The time it takes depends on many factors. “Sometimes we get to a scene, and the patient has been packaged ready

to go by the road ambulance crews. At times we are on the ground for a while preparing the patient because there are things that can be done more easily on the ground helicopter due to the limited space in the chopper cabin. “At certain times, we quickly scoop the patient and run because they need to urgently get to the hospital. Our flight medics get them to a level of medical stability to go into the chopper first. “We work very closely as a team and have procedures for flying in the clouds, which we often do to get people to the hospital. “The funds we receive from the annual chopper appeal are really important, so we rely on public and corporate donations and sponsorship. “We are really proud of our staff and our crews because they work so hard to keep our community safe. It is nice to see their efforts being recognised in a new reality series First Responders, which screens on TV1 at 8.30pm every Tuesday.”

The episodes are also available at TVNZ OnDemand. “Our crews have flown more than 500 missions to the end of May, and we are in for a busy winter. With that in mind, please take extra care on our Northland roads, in your workplaces and out on the water and look out for each other. “In late May, our 14-strong Whangāreibased clinical flight team of intensive care and critical care paramedics transitioned from St John to Northern Rescue Helicopter Ltd.” NRHL is the joint venture between the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Northland Emergency Services Trust. “We are extremely lucky to have a strong mix of people who excel at their profession and are passionate about clinical and operational excellence. “They have worked with us for many years and will be teaming up with familiar faces within our flight crews to help care for the people in our community and visitors to the region 24/7. Based on what we hear, we have really positive

support from the public. Most people seem to recognise the importance of having the chopper in the skies, and we really appreciate that support. “We enjoy meeting patients later at the base when they recover, but we don’t see that very often. We don’t get to see or hear much from the outcomes of our missions. In the 20 years I have been flying the rescue chopper — I have met maybe five people. “Sometimes it is too emotional for the patient to come to see us, and we understand that, but others may not realise we do care and are interested in their recovery and are here to say hi. “My aviation career is a far cry from my Hastings upbringing and time at Karamu High School. I plan to keep at it for many years yet along with my passion for mountain and dirt biking, gym, hunting and boating.” To donate and support Northern Rescue Helicopter Ltd — go to nest.org.nz. ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Electrical safety essential

Federated Farmers Northland is teaming up with Northpower and Top Energy to help keep rural Northlanders safe around electricity. The companies are calling for farmers, rural contractors, horticulturalists and lifestylers to be more cautious when working around electrical assets. Federated Farmers president Colin Hannah believes there are far too many unreported near misses with electricity, which could badly injure or kill rural landowners if they were to contact overhead power lines or underground electricity cables. “Accidents can happen so quickly and easily due to a moment of inattention or the old ‘she’ll be right attitude’,” he says. “We are encouraging Northlanders to do exactly what Northpower and Top Energy have been saying for years now — look up, look down, look around and keep yourself and your mates safe.” Many rural properties have electricity service lines, which are the responsibility of the landowner for upkeep, to power sheds and buildings, and water pumps, so there can be a number of potential electrical dangers on a property. As part of the Northland Rural Support Trust, Mr Hannah says he has an additional drive to help with the wellbeing of rural Northlanders.

Delivering personalised goodbyes for over 70 years.

He believes the Northpower/Top Energy ‘Just think – Does it look right?’ electricity safety campaign is timely. Northpower Customer Experience manager Rachel Wansbone is pleased to be partnering with Federated Farmers and Top Energy on the campaign. “A large part of our electricity network in Kaipara and Whangārei is rural, and it is important for us to be talking to people on the land about electrical safety. “Our electrical safety campaign underway with local newspapers, radio stations and on social media aims to raise awareness of the dangers of working around electrical assets, with the ultimate aim of reducing accidents.” Top Energy Network Operations manager Tony Smallman says, “it is important for rural Northlanders to understand the right and wrong things to do around electricity and electricity assets. “For example, if you are working around electricity, if you think something is too close, it most likely is. “Equally, there is a danger with underground cables, and too often,

people are hitting cables with machinery through inattention or poor planning. “We want to lessen the risk of people being hurt or killed by electricity and encourage people to keep an eye out for others too.” The companies have guidance material on their websites about the

legal requirements for working around electricity assets and encourage anyone with questions to contact them. For those wanting to excavate or dig, it is always recommended to get free copies of utility plans to make sure there are no underground services in the area. ¢

Waipu on Trial — a correction A late-March article in this publication delved into a historic legal wrangle between James Busby and John Johnson unfortunately contained a mistaken date. It failed to note that opinions on this divisive legal proceeding are divided to the present day. While the article Waipū on trial in The Weekend Lifestyler, March 25 2022, did not mean to insinuate that the well-respected town itself was in any way under legal scrutiny, the story centred on certain land claims, monies allegedly owed and court proceedings in the 1850s, 1860s and into 1870. Te T i r a r a u K ū ku p a w a s almost certainly the author of an acknowledged unsigned letter in which local iwi described themselves as ‘heavy of heart’ regarding the news that Busby had not been, in their or his opinion, thoroughly compensated. Te Tirarau was acknowledged chief

of the tribal group who sold the land to Busby initially. His reasons for not naming himself in this unsigned letter are lost to history. However, we were erroneous in stating that another figure in this legal drama, Judge Francis Dillon Bell, made a judgement in 1962. The correct date should have been 1862, leading to a period of dispute culminating in a compromise in 1870. This compromise saw James Busby receive £23,000 and land at Waitangi. He relinquished his claim to other lands at Ruakākā, Waipū and Ngunguru at this time. During the era of this legal dispute, Waipū itself was settled by the industrious Scots and Nova Scotian settlers following Willaim Brame, who did so with the blessing and good faith of their neighbours and entirely under the letter of the law, outside of Busby and Johnson’s unfortunate dispute.
