On the last day, participants get to carve something themselves,” says CEO Linda Clapham. “For Matariki weekend, we are presenting Saturday and Sunday learning experiences. These will focus on topics including the meaning and drafting of the carved patterns and symbols, which will lead to carving your design. The have-a-go session will be on July 2.

With the Environment Court set to hear a multi-party appeal beginning next week against plans to establish a landfill for Auckland’s rubbish in the Dome Valley, the Fight the Tip movement is concerned that supporting donations have, in fact, gone through the system. “If you have donated to us via Givealittle, could I please ask that you check we have definitely received it,” asks FTT executive member, Michelle Carmichael. “We had a significant donation not get passed on to us. Tax calculations u by Corinne Smith, Director & Chartered Accountant
Clients often ask how much tax do I need to pay and how is this calculated? I thought it would be useful to explain what the rates are and how much in dollars in our graduated tax system in NZ. The tax rates for individuals published by the IRD are: 1. Income earned up to $14,000 taxed at 10.5% = $1,470 2. Income over $14,000 and up to $48,000 tax at 17.5% = $5,950 3. Income over $48,000 and up to $70,000 taxed at 30% = $6,600 4. Income over $70,000 and up to $180,000 taxed at 33% = $36,300 So total up to earnings of $180,000 = $50,320
5. Remaining income over $180,000 taxed at 39% We specialise in tax planning, so you get the maximum tax savings now the top tax rate has been introduced. It is important this planning is not only for this current tax year but for future years. If you would like advice that is best for your situation — please get in touch. ¢

p Ann Talbot and community members have been playing Mahjong for more than five years and now runs the weekly Mangawhai Mahjong group
A game of strategy u by Ann van Engelen
Mangawhai Mahjong Club organiser Ann Talbot is encouraging people to join other new and experienced players on Mondays at 1.30pm at the Mangawhai Club. “Mahjong originated in China is a tile-based game developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century,” says Ann. “Players collect groups of tiles to build sets similar to playing Gin Rummy in cards. Many years ago, I had watched people playing and thought it was too complicated for me. “I was given a set five years ago and decided to study the book and practise by myself to get used to the tiles and gain confidence.” Ann says she then joined the Mangawhai Mahjong group and became addicted to the game. “It is a very interesting game of skill, strategy and luck. When Pam, the original manager, moved away from the area, she asked for someone to take over, so I did. “A maximum of four people can play in a game, and you score points over a series of games. Mahjong gets you thinking, and people can all play different styles. It is by playing that you get a better understanding. “There are around 144 tiles in total, and each person picks up a tile and discards what they don’t want. You call Mahjong with the last tile you play.
“When you first start, you feel like you might look silly, but you don’t. We are all very happy to help new players until they feel comfortable. It is an easy game to pick up, and the group is a nice way to make friends and get your brain ticking over for two to three hours every week. We often have new players coming along now. “We have a wide range of age groups coming. The average age is around 73, and we have very spritely knowledgeable players in their 80s. We are a very diverse group with farmer’s wives, exteachers and nurses. “Afternoon tea is provided for a $1 donation, which goes into replenishing our supplies. It is a lot of fun, and the winner of the day gets a scratch and win Lotto ticket. People are very welcome to call me, and I can meet them at the door and help them learn the basics. “It is an affordable game with a book of rules and games to play available for around $20 from any book retailer. “We meet at 1.30pm on Mondays at the Mangawhai Club except for public holidays or unplanned events. If you are interested in playing Mahjong come along on Monday or give me a call on 027 458 8144.” ¢

Kayden French-Browne grew up in Kaipara and, as a lover of the outdoors, followed in the footsteps of his dad, taking up a career in the arborist industry to care for trees. “We moved to Kaipara when I was around five years old, and I have been here ever since,” says Kayden. “My dad was an arborist for around 22 years, and most of my uncles are too, so the career choice ran in my blood. “When I was young, I would climb trees with dad on the weekends and learned lots about tree cutting from him. Having the experience and knowledge of such decisions is something I pride myself on. “A good arborist will always try their best to save a tree, but at times, it is not possible. If there is an issue, it is best to get someone in sooner rather than later, for many reasons, all tree species react differently to being trimmed and pruned. “All trees are special, and while some natives are easy to prune, others are

June 17 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER
Floral royalty u by Liz Clark
If you live in an area where frosts come during winter, the peony is the queen of flowers in the spring and summer months. Cultivated worldwide peonies are the perfect addition to the cut flower garden. They come in three distinct forms — herbaceous, tree and Itoh. Herbaceous peonies develop buds on the crown during the summer, at the base of the current season’s annual shoots. The large buds grow into stems the following growing season, while the smaller ones remain dormant. The tree peony, in the summer, develops large buds at the tip of the annual growth and near its foot. In autumn, the leaves shed and the new stems become woody and perennial.
The Itoh was developed in 1948 by Toyko-based horticulturist Toichi Itoh. He used pollen from the yellow tree peony, Alice Harding, to fertilise the herbaceous Katoden cultivar resulting in a new category of herbaceous peonies. These varieties have leaves like tree peonies, numerous large flowers from late spring to early autumn, and peony wilt resistance. The early cultivars developed include Yellow Crown, Yellow Dream, Yellow Emperor and Yellow Heaven. Herbaceous peony tubers can be planted in autumn and early winter to enable the roots to establish during
the cooler months for spring flowering. Choose a warm, sunny site away from trees, overhanging branches and other shrubs. Peonies need a separate area where they can be placed permanently — they dislike being disturbed once established. The soil should be enriched with aged organic matter before planting. Ideally, the soil pH should be around 6.5–7. Add dolomite lime if the soil is too acidic or more organic matter if too alkaline. Specialist growers advise avoiding compost when planting peonies due to the high risk of botrytis, which causes the roots and leaves to rot.
Plant the tubers five centimetres below the soil surface, allowing spacing at least 60cm between each one. The eye should be facing upwards, and the root placement should be at a slight angle. Avoid using straw or hay as mulch during the dry summer months — bark is preferable. New tubers can take several years to establish, so patience is needed. Available cultivars include Shirley Temple, Albert Crousse, Garden Lace, Vogue and Athens. Look online for more information or talk to your local nursery specialist. ¢

The day the motor car arrived u by Andy Bryenton
New Zealand was always one of the final frontiers for the automobile, as a nation surrounded by sea and covered in forests and farms.
p The Model T Ford was often required to handle conditions that would stop modern SUVs in their tracks, especially in rural New Zealand
It was 110 years ago that the car proved that it was here to stay, and overtook the horse as the ultimate form of land transport in what had been, up until then, a very maritime nation. In 1912 an expedition set out from Wellington to Auckland, attempting for the first time to forge a path north through the King Country by road in a Model T Ford. The usual method for tackling New Zealand’s muddy roads and wild wilderness in those days was on horseback or even by a sledge pulled by bullocks. To go from city to city, a ship was usually the best way to travel. However, writer Arthur Chorlton, photographer Ernest Gilling and driver Harry Richards were determined to prove the worth of the motor car. They set out from the Wellington post office and soon passed from the land of internal combustion. ‘Taihape was reached at 4.15pm that day, after an uneventful run of 1,412 miles at an average speed of 22 miles an hour, which was not bad with the old Paekakariki Hill and roads as they were then,’ wrote Chorlton. ‘From now on to Te Kuiti we were in totally un-motored country, except for a doctor’s single-cylinder De Dion in
Taumarunui, landed by train and marooned there ever since. People, horses, cattle and dogs were scared at the sight of the horseless carriage, and outside Raetihi, a woman wheeling a pram upset it with the baby in a panic stampede.’ Mud, raging rivers, roads made of logs rolled into swamps, and the need for horses to pull the Model T from metre-deep mires all taxed the expedition. Eight days and 13 hours later the vehicle rolled down Queen Street, completing a road trip that can now be managed in a single day. The trip caused a sensation, as people who had previously only heard of the automobile had now seen one in action, and those who had dismissed it as a sporting toy for the wealthy saw its utility. Arthur Chorlton went on to design an amphibious Model T before the first world war and enlisted as a driver in that conflict, driving Model Ts in the Sinai Desert. It would take many years before roads caught up with motoring technology. Still, for an era between the world wars, the example set by the intrepid trio of Chorlton, Gillings and Richards inspired hundreds of other Kiwis to get behind the wheel. ¢

p Scott was brought up on his family farm in Oneriri Rd, where he was introduced to the sport of dog trialling
A champion with dogs u by Ann van Engelen
Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial Club member Scott McRae won the South Island Sheep Dog Trial Championships with his dog, Cory, last month in the Short Head and Yard event. “I have been in multiple New Zealand and island run-offs, and winning this year is absolutely tremendous for me to finally win a competition with my dogs,” says Scott. Scott is the president of the Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial Club in Oneriri and has competed for many years, often placing but never gaining a winning title until now.

tractors until I got a team of dogs and went shepherding. “I started in the Taumarunui area but received an injury from a horse kick and went home to recover before going to Otupae station between Taihape and Napier for a few years. “I then took a stock manager role on a place out towards Kawhia for a couple of years before returning home to run the
mentor. Uncle Owen gave me a very wellbred pup and showed me how to train it, and that sparked my interest in training. “He was a very sharp, intelligent man and very good with his dogs back in the day. I would go and see him and annoy him many times, and he would constantly show me new things. “The Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial Club started in Oneriri Road with a few
I liked the idea of getting the best out of your dog and competing against other good dogs “I was born and bred at Oneriri Road in Kaiwaka and went to the local schools, then went to a school in Auckland for my high school years. “My dad said sending me to school in Auckland probably wasn’t the best money he spent. I left school and became involved in bulldozers and

I was there for many years until I married my wife Jacquie, and we leased another farm until we bought this property at Te Ārai. “Over the years, I kept up the dog trialling, which happened naturally, thanks to my uncle Owen Finlayson, who had won a New Zealand title and was my

People like the Hargreaves set up a working bee and told me to bring a dog along, so I did, had a crack and got the bug for the sport. “I liked the idea of getting the best out of your dog and competing against other good dogs. Dog trialling helps with the farming side of things too because well-trained dogs make life so much easier. It is a pleasure to go to work with your dogs if they are well trained
to compete on — two huntaway and two heading dog. “The huntaway dog doesn’t bark and has to take the sheep in a dead straight line to the top of the course. From there, they go through a zigzag course where the middle is offset and go up the middle to the top. It is a bit technical. “The heading dog runs to the top of the hill for its competition and picks up three sheep, and brings them back to you in an orderly manner. There is an obstacle course and hurdles to get them into a pen at the end, like the dog show that used to be on TV. It is a very technical competition. “You train the dogs to understand to go left and right, stop and walk. There are lots of little commands they have to do when asked. Most are born with natural abilities, but you always work to help them be the best possible dog they can be.
”
“Dog trialling helps with the farming side of things too because well-trained dogs make life so much easier. It is a pleasure to go to work with your dogs if they are well trained. “A lot of success is about the breeding and quality of their parents. If they have good parents, it makes the job much easier. What you feed them is very important too, and there are lots of food brands that are full of the right minerals, proteins and carbohydrates for them. “We use Purina dog food as they are a big sponsor of the dog trials in New Zealand, and I find it great, but other brands are equally as good. “I was on cloud nine after winning the recent competition. I have been training and trying my best competing for so many years. All of a sudden, it happened, and it was pretty neat. You feel like you are on top of the world to finally get to the top of your sport. You have to enjoy the
moment when you win because you are only as good as your next run. You can’t stop training, or people will overtake you, which is natural. “I was also selected for the New Zealand Dog Trial team. Four dogs are chosen to compete in a test match every year against Australia. This year it will be in Tasmania, and it is really exciting to be a part of the team representing our country in mid-October. “It is costly to get our animals over there, so we are looking for sponsorship. It is not a thing to be taken lightly, and we hope to win and bring the trophy home. “It is a team event, and it is like anything. To be number one, you aim to make it work for everybody. “I really encourage young farmers to get involved in dog trialling. We are here to give them ideas and get them on the way. The sport is all about passing on information and helping people to train
their pups properly, so they can actually work at home. Doing the job well at home is over and above everything else. “My success is all thanks to my Uncle Owen. He is still a tremendous support, and even today, he says: ‘Scott, you won’t take all this info in, but one day, for some reason, it will just pop up and you will remember’. Funnily enough, even today, things he said years ago pop into my mind for the first time. “Other people have also helped me along the way, and we still all talk today. Even after 30 years of working and competing with dogs, I keep searching for a better way to improve things. The Molesworth Club is very supportive. They are a great bunch of people, and that positive encouragement is a huge plus.” People can check out the Northland Sheep Dog Trial Association Facebook page for more information on dog trialling. ¢

of interest explored over several years,” says Denis. “The unifying theme is the form, shape and pattern of land, with images based on specific locations and regions and on diagrams and maps. I am interested in space and distance, curious and noble shapes and formations, and landscape processes.
I have a strong attraction to maps and wanted to create my own passionate drawer and recorder of land features.” Denis attributes the strong New Zealand landscape art tradition to the variety and beauty of our landforms. “Landform is a selection of paintings and wood sculptures that cover areas

p Denis Bourke with his work called Orange Section, which will be part of his exhibition at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery
“The exhibition includes paintings based on several locations, including Wellington, Taranaki, Nelson, Canterbury and Northland. They reflect my travels and observations and also close scrutiny of maps. “I have a strong attraction to maps and wanted to create my own as I love the detail of the land and how to depict that with paint. “Also on show are 3D wood carvings, woodscapes — landforms of ridge and valley in matai, beech and jarrah. Using traditional carving techniques with chisel and mallet, these works add that critical third dimension which paintings can only represent with illusions of light, shade and perspective. “I grew up in Taranaki, with the mountain a constant presence. A monumental and miraculous landform that changed daily and seasonally, providing a reference for position
and distance in the province. Its presence has directly informed my art practice.” Denis drew from an early age and was inspired to paint the sensuous Wellington hills around Paremata while studying physical geography at Victoria University. “The work of Smither, Binney, White and McCahon were early influences, as was the use of geomorphological diagrams and topographical maps as a basis for landscape compositions that show processes of evolution and change.” Based on a longstanding love of the New Zealand landscape in all its variety, Denis also records and depicts individual landscape features and areas. Landform is open daily from 10am to 3pm, commencing Friday, June 17 to midday Wednesday, June 29, at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai. ¢
