KidsCan is New Zealand’s leading charity dedicated to helping Kiwi kids affected by poverty, and as a record number of children and families need support, the charity needs help. As winter hits, KidsCan is asking people to donate just $15 for the 15 per cent of children in New Zealand who live with food insecurity. “Families on low incomes are doing it tougher than ever before. They can’t absorb the rising cost of living, and by the end of the week, the food runs out. It’s an awful way to live,” says KidsCan founder Julie Chapman. “Vulnerable children are bearing the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis, with teachers in schools and early childhood centres we support reporting increasing concerns for their wellbeing.”
“
One early childhood centre reported an increasing number of babies being enrolled as new mothers are forced back to work early. “Staff are picking up children each morning so families can save petrol for the weekend. Another centre is paying the power for a family who has lost an income. Teachers are digging into their own pockets to help where they can.” KidsCan is now supporting more than 1,000 schools and early childhood centres nationwide, helping to feed a record 44,000 children every day. Thousands more in 19 schools and
Before children can learn, they need to be fed and warm The charity has seen a spike in applications for help, with more than two thousand children on its waitlist. “Whānau are at breaking point with no water for weeks, no power, no petrol to bring their children to school,” says one principal. “We have not had 100 per cent attendance all year. Luckily there is KidsCan and lunch in schools because, for many of them, that is their main source of kai. Staff were seeing a change in behaviour, with students overreacting to minor situations or not even wanting to try. Our teachers are exhausted.”

52 early childhood centres are waiting for help. “In one week in April, seven schools applied for support as inflation hit a 30year high, and requests for hot meals are up 33 per cent on last term. “The cost-of-living crisis is also affecting donations, with the number of monthly donors, which charities rely on for sustained support — dropping for the first time in KidsCan’s 17-year history. “Before children can learn, they need to be fed and warm. Northland Rescue Helicopter captain Gerhard Pistorius arrived in New Zealand from South Africa in 2008. “It wasn’t until 2016, when I had finished a Fly In, Fly Out role, which took me around the world numerous times, that I changed my career path,” says Gerhard. “I joined the Northland Rescue Helicopter team and focussed on piloting helicopter rescues. For decades I had quite a career journey with degrees in psychology and business management under my belt. “In the 1990s, I joined the air force to become a pilot and flew helicopters with the air force from 1997 to 2005. “I then set off on a remarkable adventure joining CHC Helicopter,

“My wife Anita then bought an optometry business in Kerikeri, and that firmly cemented us in Northland. Joining the Northland Rescue Chopper crew was the last piece of the puzzle.” With more than 4,700 flight hours to his name, Gerhard expects to log thousands more in the future. “The most challenging job I have done recently was a winch job at Mangawhai Heads. George Booth would have died from blood loss was it not for the speed of the rescue operation. “It was a great example of collaboration with so many entities working together for a life-saving outcome. The team at Jackson Brown Automotive in Mangawhai has taken a new approach to help raise funds for various community groups. James Brown and Matt Jackson have owned Jackson Brown Automotive and Jackson Brown Marine for 15 years. They decided last month to start donating $5 from every car or boat warrant of fitness to a local community group or charity. “For June and July, we chose Bream Bay area St John ambulances and so far have donated $360,” says James. “We came up with the idea to be more part of the community and show our support to those who are volunteering

If you know of groups, we may not be aware of, we would love to hear from you for future contributions. “By customers supporting us, by giving us their warrants, we can support these groups. “We are also researching the possibility to train students in the basics of car maintenance like how to jump-start a car if your battery is flat, check tyre pressure and how to change a flat tyre.

“Checking oil and water is easy for me but not for everyone because you are not taught how to do it — you don’t know. The trade is crying out for more technicians, and it would be great to introduce young people early as they might get excited and consider becoming a mechanic. “I want to thank the people who bring their cars and boats to us and have supported us over the last 15 years. as well. The community has given to us, and we want to be able to give back to them. “The reason I chose the ambulance this month was in November I was really sick, and the ambulance service rushed me to hospital. They were so professional and caring, and I know a lot of them are volunteers. “With our business commitments, we don’t have time to volunteer, so this is one way we can help. We also watch how hard places like the surf rescue, fire brigade and other organisations like Northern Helping Hands work. “Instead of us deciding who to support each month, we would like

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER
Garden dream time u by Liz Clark
With the shortest day now passed by, the slow, dark days of winter will give way to longer days and the promise of spring around the corner — time to get inspired. Get out those magazines put aside during the flurry to clear up before visitors arrive — have a flick-through to kickstart the inspiration. Take the opportunity to visit local botanical gardens, open private gardens or those of friends and family. Another way to visit other people’s gardens and gain ideas is to join your local garden club. Garden clubs are a great way to get extra insights and knowledge from other members and guest speakers. Of course, it comes with the bonus of visits to various gardens throughout the year. Everyone has a different perspective on the kind of garden that suits their lifestyle and tastes. Then there are the more specialised organisations with a specific focus on one type of botanical species. For example, there are societies dedicated to the conservation and propagation of heritage species such as heirloom vegetables, fruit trees and roses. In comparison, others focus on cacti, bromeliads, rhododendrons, camellias and conifers. Other organisations, such as the New Zealand Plant Conservation network, are focussed on rare and endangered native species and plants from specific geographical zones. Heading north or south, one inspiring botanical garden comes to mind. Hamilton Gardens is the number one must-see place for the ultimate in inspirational ideas. This writer had the opportunity a few years ago to visit and find more inspiration than could be bargained for. Hundreds of photographs later, the showcase of garden styles ranged from the simplicity of Chinese fashion to the more contemporary modernist and sustainable styles. Alternatively, countless websites and videos on web platforms such as YouTube are dedicated to gardens and gardening, not to mention endless ideas for design and the best use of available space. Even on a limited budget, an inspiring garden can come with a little imagination, determination and using whatever is available. A small corner can become a place of peace and relaxation with a chair, some potted flowers and a little bit of shade from the heat of the day when summer is in full swing. No matter your preferences, there’s something available to suit all tastes. Get out into the garden, start planting and enjoy a relaxing and rewarding pastime. Happy gardening. ¢

Outbuildings extroverted u by Andy Bryenton
Some of the greatest inventions that changed the world have come out of sheds, but the image of a dusty old space filled with pipe tobacco smoke and sawdust is a thing of the past. In those olden days, when television came in only three flavours, the shed was the castle and stronghold of dads and grandads, who retreated to its confines to potter on projects, listen to the cricket on a portable radio and brew their own beer and strawberry wine. Today, those lean-tos next to garages, shacks at the bottom of the garden and storage buildings groaning with unmarked cardboard banana boxes are prime territory for a makeover. With space at a premium in modern homes, turning an under-utilised shed into an oasis of calm, a nook for entertaining or a hobby centre is a smart choice. The process often starts with a comprehensive strip-down and dragout assessment, in which the detritus of years is given the Marie Kondo treatment. If those 1982 Toyota parts, cracked terracotta pots and stacks of old newspapers don’t bring you joy, throw them out, and take a look at the structure revealed beneath. Cracked concrete floors or even bare dirt are often discovered in older sheds; a layer of fresh, smooth and level concrete will provide a solid foundation in these cases, so it may be time to
call in the experts. Walls will often be a wooden frame with corrugated iron facing or marine ply; this is the perfect skeleton on which to construct a more convivial internal space. Start by packing out the gaps with insulation, then hang ply or thin boards to cover up. A coat of paint will complete this blank canvas. If your shed isn’t powered, don’t mess around with extension cords; call in an electrician to sort out some permanent, safe power points. These will be handy no matter what direction your ‘leisure cave’ project takes. Perhaps this will be a hobby space with machines like lathes, drill presses, welders or 3D printers. It could become a sewing room with spaces for fabric to be worked and shaped or an art studio with adjustable lighting. Others will want to create their own private little bar or tavern, embracing a theme or finding space for ultimate big boys’ toys such as a pool table, pinball machine, old-fashioned arcade video games cabinet or slot car track. Making your own bar, adding some optics, a fridge and an ice maker allows for quirky wall ornaments like stag heads with sunglasses and the obligatory dart board.
p No room for vintage arcade games in your home? The she shed or man cave is the perfect place for all your toys
The final thing to consider when conver ting an outbuilding from spiderwebbed storage backwater to a vibrant new living space is security. Outside of the main body of your home, sheds and garages definitely benefit from their own security lights or even remote camera systems synced to your mobile device. Winter is a great time to expand the amount of leisure space we have under cover. So take a closer look at your shed situation, and see if you can’t squeeze some extra enjoyment out of its potential. ¢

In a world seemingly obsessed with retro-cool pop culture (think Stranger Things, vaporwave and Elton John remixes), the trend for concealed kitchen appliances and televisions is back, spearheaded by a new minimalist look. “Our lifestyles have transitioned into more open-concept living,” says designer Sara Malek Barney. “We want the spaces to be uncluttered and visually appealing. It takes time to transition over the years, so the trend has slowly increased in popularity.” What this means for those looking to keep pace with the latest style is a winter of careful measurements and custom cupboard installations. It may seem like the height of sacrilege to conceal your brushed aluminium fridge behind a panel. However, the clean, uncluttered look of a kitchen without technology has been compared to the classic lines of a Rolls Royce dashboard that forgoes all those buttons and digital readouts for twin chrome clocks and acres of beautiful polished wood. Thankfully, the slim size of modern televisions makes it easier than ever to tuck them away in hiding places or utilise their visual properties in innovative

FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT Tasty reasons to eat in season u by Andy Bryenton
Humans may not be a hibernating species like the grizzly bear, but the change of seasons does bring about the desire for different foods and warmer, more hearty dining experiences. Part of this is the psychology of the season, as the traditional meals of winter, such as slow-cooked stews, roasts with all the trimmings and sweet, aromatically spiced puddings, put us in the mind of cosiness and satisfaction. However, there’s a growing wealth of evidence that eating what’s in season, whether it’s prepared by a top local chef or in your own kitchen, is better in many ways. Certainly, the short days and long nights of winter lend themselves to long and leisurely dinners with a fireplace roaring in the background. There’s also a distinct temptation to head out for some seasonal cuisine and mulled wine or a dram of top-shelf whisky, at your favourite eatery. Beyond this compulsion to togetherness in winter, there’s a reinvented concept in health science which says that eating seasonal vegetables and fruits to complement fresh local seafood and meat is good for your body and the planet. In ancient India, they called the practice of eating seasonal foods Ritucharya, and it was considered a pillar
of preventive medicine. Now nutritionists are starting to agree that those old-time sages were onto a winner. While we have the technology to grow veggies and fruit out of season, the real thing at the right time is more nutritionally dense. As an example, In a study monitoring the vitamin C content of broccoli, it was found that broccoli grown during its peak season had a higher vitamin C content than broccoli grown during the spring. Ripening methods such as chemicals, heat treatments and gases can indeed force-produce food out of season, but it ends up less valuable to the body. Then there’s the matter of taste. Chefs will often change their menu to be very seasonal, knowing that their artistry will benefit from a more vivid taste palate. We’ve all tasted the difference between summer tomatoes right off the vine and those which come in plastic during winter; eating out of season is often selling your taste buds short. A final reason to eat seasonally overlaps with a good one to eat locally. The ecological cost of producing and shipping out-of-season veggies and
p Top chefs change their menus to offer the bounty of the season’s produce, satisfying our winter cravings for hot and hearty fare
fruit is much greater than sourcing in-season produce just down the road. In an area blessed with fertile soil and plenty of farms, this is an easy choice. In early winter, where we find ourselves now, farmers’ markets and restaurants alike will be offering pumpkin and squash, broccoli and
peppers, mushrooms and sprouts to accompany hearty cold-weather fare or make piping hot soups with plenty of flavours. Team up seasonal pickings with fresh local seafood or slow-cooked cuts of meat for a wealth of options, or head out with your friends, a coat and a scarf to enjoy winter dining on the east coast. ¢

p It was when Rachel relocated from London to Mangawhai that she took on yoga as a full-time career
Yoga builds confidence u by Ann van Engelen
Rachel Fountain established Kiwi Cubs Yoga to help mothers with newborn babies and toddlers to exercise and relax together. “I also have classes for young children and teens,” says Rachel. “I come from a sales and marketing background and have always done yoga. During the first lockdown, I was in London and then relocated to Mangawhai and studied yoga on the side while working. “In London, I ran club days and worked with children from underprivileged backgrounds. Some were quiet, troubled

I have after-school programmes for all school-age children from five years old through to teenagers, as well as school holiday programmes and Tree Cubs which is an outdoors programme.

Yoga gives you the space to come into yourself and be mindful of where you are at and what you are doing. “It provides you with strength, flexibility and calming techniques that can be used when you have a stressful moment. Adults and children can draw on the techniques they are taught. If
I love teaching yoga and focussing on new mums and children as there are a lot of adult teachers here already youth, which was very rewarding and then I taught adults with disabilities. “I went on to do my diploma and various other yoga qualifications, and when I returned to New Zealand and had my baby, I decided to get into yoga full-time. “My post-natal yoga classes are for mums after birth, and they can bring their babies along too. “I am passionate about teaching children yoga and saw a gap in the market here, so that is what I focus on. To me, it is important to create a safe place for children to experience positivity through movement and mindfulness. I want to help foster health and wellness for Kiwi children inside and out. “I like that yoga allows you to come into the now. If you can fit in an hour

I believe yoga for children is very useful. It builds confidence through learning to use the tools and techniques to deal with situations that you may find difficult, like anxiety and certain emotions
on teaching them breathing techniques and how to manage their emotions in places like home or school. They are like therapy tools when they find themselves in stressful situations in life. “I find the postnatal classes are great because those first couple of weeks after babies are born can be tough and yoga is a great place to come together with other mums. The classes help you to heal and strengthen your body and reconnect with yourself as you find calm and stillness in the chaotic weeks of motherhood. “Not only are you nourishing yourself and your body, you are meeting other mums, increasing your energy levels and working your pelvic floor. We get the babies involved and read nursery rhymes, and I think it really does decrease stress and increases relaxation and energy while bringing fun and pleasure for mum and baby. “In my classes, babies can cry if they need to, mums can breast or bottle

feed and change nappies — there is no judgement. It is just a nice place for mums, dads or caregivers to be together. “Multi-sensory activities such as smell, touch, sound and movement are good for babies. At the end of the day, the classes focus on the physical element of yoga, which is good for body fitness, strength and flexibility. The emotional side of things also helps you to get through life. “I believe yoga for children is very useful. It builds confidence through learning to use the tools and techniques to deal with situations that you may find difficult, like anxiety and certain emotions. It helps treat some illnesses, and they gain flexibility and strength for sport. “Some people think yoga is for hippies, but that is not the case. I suggest people give it a go before they judge. It is more about movement, and it doesn’t matter if you have things going on in the background or not.
“It gives young people the chance to discover how the body works and use their imagination of what it can do. Yoga is no different to other sports, it has been modernised compared to back in the day, and it is amazing how much it calms the mind. “When I was in London working with the underprivileged, I saw lots of children with ADHD, and learning difficulties. Some children had lots of problems and attention difficulties and they couldn’t focus or concentrate. Some were really reserved and shut off, and I saw many children happy to have an activity to get them out of the house. “They loved the relaxing music, and lavender smells I used and would ask for it as a part of their moment. They learned to shut their eyes, shut their brains and focus on the here and now. “We did silly games, and it was all about the children. The yoga helped them release their bad feelings from
having a bad day, the fight with their sibling, or whatever was going on at home. They learned to let go of unwanted talk that was lingering around and to let the negative energy out and the positive energy in. “I saw them leave calmer and more open-minded, but my main concern was that they enjoyed their moment with me. “I love teaching yoga and focussing on new mums and children as there are a lot of adult teachers here already. I am also interested in getting involved in schools and helping with physical education and holiday programmes. It would be nice to share my skill with daycares too. “People can find out more on my Kiwi Cubs Yoga Facebook or Instagram pages. I love being in the Kaipara area and meeting people through my wonderful wellbeing classes on a weekly basis. Kiwi Cubs Yoga is also a great place to make new friends and for children to learn to socialise as well.” ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER
A healthy addition u by Ann van Engelen
After starting Happy Chicks free-range egg business in 2020, Jeannie and Richard Walker recently added growing microgreens to their venture. “We had many conversations with their customers about the ultimate breakfast, and it always included eggs, a hollandaise sauce, bacon or sausages and a microgreen topping,” says Jeannie. “The idea of diversifying our business was always on the cards, but we had to find out what people really wanted and why. “Customers wanted to have a cafestyle breakfast at home long-term because there was so much uncertainty with lockdowns and businesses being able to operate.” The cafes Happy Chicks supply eggs to were also calling for a local microgreen grower. “I spent nine months researching hydroponics for microgreens and investigating all the grow options for these delicate nutrition-packed gems. Living in Mangawhai, the climate can be harsh, and we needed to be certain of being able to supply customers and cafes year-round. “I was fortunate that my friend Clive Cornford is an expert plant scientist.
Delivering personalised goodbyes for over 70 years.
Clive steered me in the direction of vertical farming using led lighting on racks and helped me with multiple other decisions. “The controlled environment ensures the reliability of crops to consistently supply the demand. Mangawhai Microgreens was formed, and vertical farming is an amazing use of space. It has turned 4.2 metres of grow area into 21 metres in the same floor space. “Microgreens are delicate and require specific amounts of humidity, light, and temperature. “Different methods of watering during the stages from seed to harvest are also important to ensure a healthy crop. The short turnaround time from sowing to harvest is a bonus for productivity. “The microgreens are packed with vitamins and minerals and can turn a dish into something spectacular with the sight, texture and taste. “Planning is essential to get your harvest ready on time. Our freerange chickens get to peck over the mats when we are finished. “In the beginning, I made plenty of mistakes and saw why people give up, but I kept on sowing and growing until I got it right. I trialled different
blends and gained customer feedback for preferences. “We now supply local cafes, direct to the customers from our farm shop at 198A Devich Road Mangawhai and at the Mangawhai Heads Four Square.
