“We are trying to get the younger generation working alongside us on our community projects,” says Kaiwaka Can chair David Wright.
“We want the students to gain experience while helping us do things like apply for grants and work on projects that we have. We won’t have them sitting there watching — we want to help them work out how to secure things like finances, grants and sponsorship. It is all good experience for them at the end of the day — if they do a good job, it will look good on a curriculum vitae.”
David says he wants the volunteer students to gain valuable handson experience.
continue some of the projects. We have had working bees but haven’t been able to complete a lot, but we have now got to the stage where we need to put the weather aside and get on with things or nothing gets done.
“We are also preparing for the Lights and Lanterns Festival at the end of the month in conjunction with Kaiwaka Primary School, the local Kura school and members of the public. It is on the evening of June 30. The kids will make lanterns, and we will walk down the street across to the park. We are looking at finishing the festivities at Eutopia Cafe and then have the event annually and make it bigger.
“They will be doing the work and communicating with places like councils and businesses. At present we are looking at creating a skate park and public area at the new piece of park in Kaiwaka and putting a pontoon in the river for kayakers and the like. We also want to add walkways to link up to the bridge we have to make it more effective for locals and visitors.
“It has been a difficult year with weather and Covid to get everything done, but we are moving forward. There is plenty going on, and things are going well, considering how much the rain and weather interfered with our ability to
“More lights are going up around the town as well, but at present, our man who installs them has had an injury. So once he has recovered, more properties will be added to the little town of lights theme. We have also found their original tall sailing ship light that was opposite the Three Furlongs Hotel and hope install that up by the park.
“Any senior students who are interested in joining us and gaining valuable life experience can call me on 021 889 370. We would love to get the younger generation involved in our community activities and projects.”

COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS – NEWS YOU CAN TRUST
Zonta encourage young women
u by Ann van Engelen
The Zonta Club of Mangawhai is calling for young women between 16 to 18 years of age living in Kaipara and interested in upskilling their leadership abilities on the Spirit of Adventure’s Leadership Development cruise in 2024 to apply now.
“Once a year, the Zonta Club of Mangawhai gives one local young woman the opportunity to experience the thrill and challenge of this programme,” says club president Liz Holsted.
“Now is the time to complete an application form for the 2023 award with applications closing on June 30, and the recipient will be confirmed mid-July. We are encouraging residents from the Mangawhai, Tomarata, Wellsford, Kaiwaka, Maungatūroto and Waipū areas to apply. The applicants must show leadership potential or be interested in developing their leadership skills.”
Zonta International empowers women worldwide through service and advocacy.
“The Spirit of Adventure Award is made possible because of the generosity of the local community at fundraising events such as our Mid Winter Ball and quiz nights. The voyage is a life-changing experience. Young people leave with a whole new set of skills, lots of new friends and new confidence to take on the challenges in life. The whole voyage is based on learning by doing. It helps young women have empowerment to know they can accomplish challenges they face through life. The experience helps people to gain a level of selfempowerment only found on the Spirit of New Zealand tall sailing ship.
“You improve your communication and leadership skills and learn the
importance of self-awareness and being a part of a team as you move outside of your comfort zone.
“There is a medical criterion for the Spirit of Adventure Trust, and attendees must be able to swim 100 metres unaided. They must also agree to the Spirit of Adventure Trust’s code of conduct, terms and conditions of the voyage.”
A past winner, Claire MacDonald, said she enjoyed every aspect of the voyage, from sitting out on the bowsprit, while the ship sailed from Tāwharanui out to
Great Barrier, to sailing with dolphins nearby every day, to night swims, to late-night star gazing, to jumping off the ship’s rope swing and doing flips off the side of the boat.
“I made great friendships with some of my shipmates during this voyage, and I will always remember the experience as such a positive and fun life experience that I was fortunate enough to take part in. The memories will stay with me always.”

Country meets town comedy
u by Ann van Engelen
Northland Rural Support Trust is presenting an evening of comedy at the Wellsford Community Centre with comedy duo Emma Newborn and Amelia Dunbar Life’s a Bitch tour on Thursday, June 15, at 7pm.
“I am Auckland born and bred and Amelia is from Canterbury,” says Emma.
“We are very much a city meets country mix and have been performing our set of The Bitches’ Box comedies where we play farm dog characters together for 10 years now. We have three live shows that we tour around the country and have a wonderful time bringing laughter to our audiences.”
Emma and Amelia conjure up a hilariously imaginative world that throws
“Our shows are light relief, which we believe is necessary as it’s very easy to get bogged down in the enormity of what’s happened in Northland weatherwise and the impact it has had. The show Life’s a Bitch is to encourage farmers to get off-farm, and meet with the community, and a comedy show gives them a good excuse.”
Life’s a Bitch is about two travelling dogs from Switzerland who recently arrived in New Zealand, and the wheel comes off their van. The Ministry for
the spotlight on our four-legged friends. They bounce from one character to another at breakneck speed, revealing the glorious inner workings of a dog’s mind.
“We started getting calls from people asking if we could do cyclone relief shows, and we realised how big a need there is for comedy in these tough times. We have done earthquake and drought relief shows as well. There is a lot to be said for having a night out and taking your mind off things while getting together with neighbours for a catch-up while seeing something fun, silly and a bit less serious.
Primary Industries has sponsored the show alongside the Rural Support Trust.
“They get stuck at a little rural garage and meet a whole host of characters from the area. All of our characters are dogs, there are no humans, and it’s a lot of fun and very silly. The guys like it as much as the girls. We have two working dogs named Wayne and Pip, a huntaway and a heading dog that are crowd favourites with the farmers.
“We absolutely love what we do and look forward to meeting urban and rural folk at the events because

Celebrating a first
u by Ann van Engelen
The residents at Ranburn Ultimate Care, Waipū, celebrated the first King Charles’s Birthday with a chocolate and wine tasting event, along with planting the tītoki tree they chose to celebrate the King’s coronation.
“We had a variety of wine and chocolates to enjoy,” says activities coordinator Carina Pentz.
“With wine tasting, we had white chocolate to go with the chardonnay, semi-sweet chocolate for the riesling or rosé and a citrus-infused white chocolate was paired with the sauvignon blanc and a dark chocolate for the merlot.”
Carina says a coffee chocolate was matched to the merlot.
“The residents were very excited to be a part of the historic moment of celebrating King Charles’s birthday. It was a new experience for them, and they dressed up as if they were going to Buckingham Palace. It is a good continuation of the coronation, especially as we were able to plant
the tītoki tree we chose to mark the coronation with.
“The gardener helped us dig the hole, and the maintenance guys made something for the plaque to go on, and in the future, we may build a place for the people to sit under the tree. The birthday cake was a nice chocolate cake, and between the wine tastings to clean their palates, we had plain white bread.
“They said it was a great new experience, and a lot of fun was had by all. These events have given our residents something nice to look forward to, especially with the amount of bad weather lately. With a few people coming from Britain, it has been extra special for them to be a part of the historic moments.” ¢

The wind children
u by Liz Clark
If you’re a spring bulb addict, you’ll still be looking at the catalogues and perhaps thinking, ‘I’d love some anemones’ — of course you do.
Anemones are rhizomes rather than bulbs as such. They’re one of the easiest to grow and planting season is from March to late May. Another name for the anemone is the windflower after the Greek word ‘anemos’, meaning wind; the genus includes approximately 65 species.
Two varieties are grown for gardens in New Zealand to create long-lasting spring colours in a mass display.
Anemone coronaria De Caen is a singleflowered type favoured by florists for long stems. The other St Brigid is a
double-flowered cultivar. Both types are suitable for planting en mass for a kaleidoscope of colour in spring.
Before planting, the anemone rhizomes should be chilled in a paper bag in the fridge for approximately three to five weeks, which will prepare them for sprouting. Choose a sunny, warm position rather than a shaded one. Anemones need full sun and warmth for robust, vigorous growth. They will also grow well in pots with a suitable bulb mix as a planting medium.
Good drainage is an essential part of preventing the rhizomes from rotting in the ground before they have had a chance to establish. In areas with poor drainage, build up a deep layer of compost and good-quality top soil to prevent any issues. Fork in blood and bone and pre-prepared bulb fertiliser before planting.
The rhizomes should be soaked in water to rehydrate them two hours before planting. Plant at a depth of three to five centimetres with the pointed end upright and spaced at eight
centimetres apart. Water well for the first two weeks to encourage sprouting — regularly water during the drier growing season.
As with many spring flowering plants, anemones are heavy feeders — regular fertilising will keep them growing well. Once the foliage dies back in late spring, the rhizomes can either be lifted or left in the ground for the next season’s flowering.
Visit your local garden centre or look online for a specialist bulb nursery for options. ¢
Experience opera in Mangawhai
u by Ann van Engelen
Recently-retired pharmacist Stuart Thompson is on a mission to share his love of Mangawhai and what he calls the glorious art form of opera at the upcoming Mangawhai Opera Lovers Film Festival.
“I have joined together with wellknown local and current chair of Mangawhai Artists, Belinda Vernon and have created the festival, which will comprise the screening of three celebrated operas at the Mangawhai Movies on the third Sunday in June, July and August,” says Stuart.
“I am an ‘opera nut’ and own around 500 opera DVDs, and have travelled the world to attend operas in many famous houses. I experienced my first opera in 1970 in Auckland, where a young Kiri

“All screenings will begin at 3pm at the Mangawhai Theatre, the historic church in the Mangawhai Historic Village, operated by the Mangawhai Historic Village Trust.

Te Kanawa was performing the title role in Carmen.”
Stuart has since heard many famous opera singers in performance, including Joan Sutherland, Jose Carreras, Maria Callas, Birgit Nilsson, Tito Gobbi and Placido Domingo.
“With sufficient interest, we hope the festival will become a yearly winter event. The experience starts on Sunday, June 18 — the festival will launch with Verdi’s La Traviata. This will be followed by Puccini’s Tosca, and we will complete the season in August with Mozart’s Don
bring it to Mangawhai to share it with those who already love it and introduce it to those who want to see what it’s like.
“Before each performance, I will give a brief introduction, and, for the first performance, there’ll be a celebratory glass of non-alcoholic bubbles. To further help moviegoers enjoy the operas, a brief synopsis of each storyline will be available online, and as a handout on the day.”
As with other Mangawhai Movies screenings, the entrance fee will be $12
a person. With a capacity of just 50 seats, bookings are recommended and can be made through mangawhaimovies.com.

2023 begins with La Traviata on Sunday, June 18, from 3pm to 5pm, followed by

The importance of kaitiaki
u by Ann van Engelen
One Tree Point School students have been working with Whitebait Connection for the past two terms learning the importance of being caretakers of their local natural environment.
“We started with in-classroom lessons for our Year 5 and 6 students learning what happens to the habitat or river environment for different species to live in when debris or pollution goes into the water,” says teacher Jess Burr.
The Whitebait Connection programme teaches students freshwater and marine conservation.
“They began learning about the natural issues and then the problems made by man. We went on field trips and stream investigations, comparing the health of the rivers between two sites.
The children investigated what they can do, what things tell us if the streams are healthy or not and did invertebrate studies by sweeping the river bed.”
Depending on what invertebrates they found — depended on the health of the stream.
“Invertebrates are the little water insects or microorganisms found in the water. We identified what they found and noted that the environment of the two streams was known to have New Zealand īnanga spawning sites. The īnanga is an endemic species of whitebait,
A
Chase Green
which is why they are important to protect.
“We learned about the local breeding of kingfish for commercial use and queried if there will be whitebait farms in the future. We also helped plant native trees as part of our community actionbased learning to support the habitats in a meaningful way in conjunction with a Waipū farmer to support the īnanga spawning habitat.
“The īnanga chose the site themselves to breed there, and they need it to be habitat friendly.
“The Whitebait Connection has taught the children about the īnanga life cycle and habitat. They learned how to be better kaitiaki of our streams and rivers through hands-on, actionbased learning. It has provided them with a chance to learn about a local species and to see what they could do to better our environment for the coming years.”
Year 5 student Isabella said, “It was so much fun being outdoors to learn, and we got pretty dirty sometimes but that added to the fun.” ¢

A tropical touch
u by Ann van Engelen
Using native timber salvaged from rivers is a delight for Mokalei Designs owner Moehau Pearson who grew up in Tahiti before her life adventures saw her settle in Mangawhai.
“I grew up right on the beach at Bora Bora in Tahiti, and my father was a woodworker,” said Moehau.
“Dad made furniture and things like beds, bars and reception areas for the resorts as well as items for other people. My sisters, Kahaia and Leilani and I grew up with dad in the workshop or on the boat fishing with him. In Tahiti, the national language is French, but
perform, set up, and test each of the challenges before they ran them with the contestants, and I moved around different departments helping.”
Moehau settled working in the art department as an assistant painting the challenge props and other things.
“It was long hours and a lot of work, but we had a great crew, and we had fun travelling to two countries every year,
miss the island life, including things like the food and my family. My mum is still in Tahiti, but my dad died in 2017.
“Living in Hawaii was also different to Tahiti because there is such an eclectic mix of cultures. In Tahiti, ladies walk around with huge flower crowns on their heads every day and live in very simple clothing. It is certainly a carefree life there.
our father was American, so we spoke English at home. I wanted to be an oceanographer and studied Biological Sciences at University in California. Just before I started grad school in Hawaii, I was offered a job on the Survivor USA TV show with my sister as part of the Dream Team.
“It was meant to be a summer job, but I stayed for 10 years. We helped plan,
living and working together. It was on the job that I met my partner, who is a Kiwi. When our daughter Moeavai was due, we returned to Tahiti for her birth, and then we came to New Zealand because he works here in the film industry.
“Originally, we lived in Auckland, but I was miserable there, and one day, we visited Mangawhai, and I thought I could cope here so we moved. I certainly still
“In recent years, I started getting interested in having indoor plants in our home but was shocked when I saw the prices. With Tahiti and Hawaii being tropical, the plants I wanted grow everywhere in the islands — some would grow like a weed in our backyard. I decided to start here by taking cuttings and growing my own plants for affordability.

“I try to use the wood for different purposes like spice racks because it is so special”
p Hoku and Moeavai enjoy time with their mum both in the work shop and at the beach where they get to explore trees
“My sister had an idea of putting the cuttings into test tubes, and then I started looking for pieces of raw-edged wood to put the tubes in.”
Moehau found a small family business in the Far North which recovers logs from river beds and queried if there would be suitable offcuts for her idea.
“It is a family-owned business, and they collect the native wood that fell into the water as it travelled by raft down the river in Northland years ago. The family invited me to visit, and I now get some beautiful pieces, including kauri, rimu, mataī, tōtara and pūriri. The logs have been in the river mud for more than 100 years.
“Because of the minerals in the mud, the wood is well preserved, and some have beautiful dark colours. The guy’s great-grandfather would have been one of the lumberjacks who worked at the saw mills back then, which makes the wood extra special and an interesting story. They let me go through the yard
and choose the pieces that I like, and I work on that lot until I run out and then go and select another lot. They tell me it is one of the last supplies of the old growth that they’ve recovered. The family use a barge with a crane and divers who probe the mud to find the logs and bring them up to the surface.
“One of the cool things is that they replant native trees on the banks when they remove wood from the water. They have a big nursery at the back of their lumber yard for their seedlings. If I hadn’t found them, I don’t think I would’ve been able to find a good supply of such beautiful timber as the offcuts are usually put in the fire.
“Once I get home, I pressure wash the pieces to get the mud off, and then I stand them up side by side in my workshop. When I am ready, I cut what I want off the wood I want, decide how many test tubes I will put in it and plane it to make sure it will sit well. Sometimes it is one — sometimes it may be six or
more. Then I sand it, where necessary, and decide what plant would suit it.
“I have plants and herbs like rosemary, mint and basil. You can also use them for a single flower like a tulip or a group of dried flowers. The uses are endless. One lady brought some to put sand in from the various beaches in the area that she goes to, such as Te Ārai, Waipū and Mangawhai.
“I try to use the wood for different purposes like spice racks because it is so special. Moeavai and our son Hoku both like helping me. Hoku enjoys finding the right size test tubes and putting them in holes to finish the holders.
“To finish the piece off, I use linseed oil and beeswax on top, and that is when the wood comes alive and the colours come through, it is so satisfying. I put a fresh coat of oil on every few months to bring the colour back to life. If the wood gets wet, water spots can appear, but if you buff it with beeswax, they go away. You can also use olive oil for this.
“We love living in Mangawhai with the small community feel. Our children are happy here and love the school. It’s a great community. I never was a city girl and liked it here even when there was just a Four Square.
“I go to the different markets when I can and have my Mokalei Designs Facebook page, and I am currently getting my website organised. I am proud of my products and get so many compliments. Often older men walk past my market stand and get a surprise, walk back and chat about what we do. We have had some great conversations.
“I started in December 2021, and I am still learning but loving it. It is very satisfying. My business is called Mokalei Designs because Mokalei was the name of our dad’s fishing boat. Mokalei is the first letters of my and my sisters’ names. Dad passed away in 2017, and we decided to keep using Mokalei because it reminds us of our childhood and the most beautiful place on earth.” ¢

Introducing the buddy chair
u by Ann van Engelen
The team at Bunnings Mangawhai recently donated a buddy bench to the Mangawhai Activity Zone for young children to use to take time out, observe others playing and enjoy time with their old and new friends.
“We were offered a buddy chair from the Bunnings team in celebration of the recent Pink Shirt Day, and we gratefully accepted,” says Mangawhai Activity Zone committee chair Kate Arbuckle.
“The idea is to have it in our playground, and children can come along, sit in it and watch others, have a break or chat with their friends. The Bunnings team got together and built the seat themselves during their lunch hours and delivered it to us. We painted it and added a plaque, hoping to encourage children to use it as their little place to sit.
“We have placed it next to a proposed place for a little outdoor mud kitchen that has been donated to us by New World Mangawhai, which will be put in place in the next week or two. We hope the two will work hand in hand nicely.”
Kate says the playground is going progressing nicely, considering the delays due to recent weather events.
“We have had lots of lumps and bumps like everybody, and we have had some playground equipment roped off for various maintenance reasons. We are constantly working around things to improvements to continue to provide an amazing space for the community.
“The idea of the buddy seat means two friends can sit there if they want to. Pink Shirt Day was started in Canada for a boy being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school, and we wanted to put a positive spin on it. Rather than it being a seat for a child to sit on when they are lonely, we want it to be a really good place to build friendships.
“It is another nice little item that is being added to our long list of facilities at the park beside the children’s
playground. It is also beside one of the barbecues where families gather, which is a very family-focussed area.
“We are constantly working towards fundraising to improve, replace and maintain the facilities here so that we can provide new spaces and improve the facilities. The park is here for everyone. We have had a few delays with the new skate bowl, but the street plaza has now opened.
“The whole park is just amazing and it is always full, with all age groups using the facilities, including mums, dads, teens and our little people on their scooters. The staff at Bunnings were really proud of what they have done, and we are so grateful. We appreciate the whole Mangawhai business community and families who continue to donate items or money toward the park operation.” ¢
