Honouring a life well lived. At Morris & Morris our focus has always been at providing a funeral that honours the life of the loved one that has passed away. It is important to us that we keep providing our community with the ability to say goodbye in a manner that is representative of the loved one that has passed away.

As qualified Funeral Directors we know that not having a proper goodbye can have severe implications for the family members who are left behind. Giving family members the opportunity to honour the life that was lived, not only encourages but delivers on healthy grieving.

“I originally moved to Waipū when I was six years old,” says Janet. “I then went to Auckland to train as a school dental nurse and primary teacher. I always felt it was a privilege to be brought up here and craved to come back. I returned with my husband Justin and two children in 1990. “My sister and her family were members of the pipe band, and they were looking for more members, so I joined in 1993. I learned to play the tenor and bass drum because they were easier to learn than pipes.

Scottish settlement. We have competed in the National Pipe Band competitions, ran the provincial competition here, and have helped with many fundraisers. “The band plays at Anzac days, weddings and funerals too. A few pipers often go and pipe the Waipū rugby team on to the field when they play as well. “When the pipes are played, everyone feels them — it is a very emotional experience every time. “I retired because there comes a time to step aside and let someone else take

We are now more of a village social band but have two world gold medal players amongst us.

“I became the club secretary in 1995. We have built some amazing friendships in the band and have lots of fun and banter while keeping the Scottish culture alive. “The tartan our club wears is the dark green and blue Gordan tartan. It was chosen because of all the families who came to Waipū, there wasn’t a Gordon, so it is a neutral tartan. “It is particularly important to keep the band going because Waipū is a

the reins. Nicola Pivac has taken over, and I am sure she will do a great job looking after things. “I am a life member and will stay in touch. I have loved my time with the band and wouldn’t have changed it for anything. “The club practises on the first and third Sunday of each month at the Waipū Caledonian Club rooms behind the Celtic Barn at 2pm. p Carleen Still will be raising funds for the Waipū cycle and Walkway at her upcoming country music evening

Singer supports walkway u by Ann van Engelen

Country singer Carleen Still is putting her talent to work to help support the Waipū Cycle and Walkway project. “The cycle and walkway goes between Waipū township and Waipū Cove,” says Carleen. “The committee has been raising money for quite a while, and I am looking forward to helping them raise muchneeded funds. “There are three kilometres to be completed, and it will be eight kilometres long and will help get cyclists and walkers off the main highway. “I love the fact that Waipū is a small village and everyone knows everyone, and they are very supportive of each other. “It is a small but huge community, and everything you need is here, including

the Four Square, doctors and a variety of shops. “It is less than 10 minutes drive to Waipū Cove and approximately 90 minutes to the Auckland Harbour Bridge depending on traffic delays. “Waipū is a thriving town, but the year has been challenging, with events that have been cancelled due to Covid restrictions. “All of my Waipū concerts have been cancelled along with other events, including the annual Art N Tartan and the Lions car show. “When I am not singing, I am at Ray White Bream Bay, based in Waipū selling

real estate, but music is my passion. At present, I am halfway through recording my sixth CD. “Peter, my husband is in my band as well. I sing country, rock ‘n’ roll and country rock and was fortunate to have my songs Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miner’s Daughter and Highway 101’s The Bed You Made for Me, recognised by Hillcrest Music in Canada. “I enjoy my music and love connecting with people. You get up there, and people interact and have fun. If they have fun — I have fun. “For the fundraising concert, we can have 100 vaccinated people within the Waipū Citizens and Services Club.

“Unfortunately, vaccine passes are required due to the Covid rules, and we are limited to 100 tickets. “We plan to have a night of fun with spot prizes, music and dancing for a good cause. “It is also a good opportunity to support the club. If people can’t make it but would like to donate to the project, they can contact me.” Carleen’s concert is on Saturday, March 26 from 7pm until late. Tickets are $15 each, available from the Waipū Citizens and Services Club or the Ray White Bream Bay Waipū office. ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

End of year financial tips u by Corinne Smith, Director & Chartered Accountant

I thought it would be appropriate to talk about the end of the financial year approaching fast on March 31 2022 and tips to check. Rules to keep cash flowing — If money is a bit tight as the financial year draws to a close, here are four tax measures focussed on providing and enabling cashflow: • If your cash flow has been significantly impacted by the economic effects of Covid-19, you may be able to apply for relief from use of money interest and penalties or enter into an instalment arrangement for payments due to Inland Revenue. Inland Revenue’s ability to remit use of money interest in such circumstances applies to tax payments due up until March 24 2022.

• Keeping an eye on tax losses, as the government introduced a same or similar business test that allows tax losses to be carried forward. it may become useful if you want to raise capital for your business in the future. • Consider the Small Business Cashflow (Loan) Scheme offered by the government through Inland Revenue where certain conditions are met. It provides loans for businesses with 50 or fewer fulltime staff of up to $10,000 plus $1,800 for each full-time employee (therefore dependent on the number of employees) with an interest rate

Shar is described by her clients as professional, responsive and friendly, a straight talker, who makes the process of buying or selling property easy. Shar is enthusiastic and motivated, which reflects in the sueccess of her career thus far. Shar’s success has resulted in need of extra help with her work load and she has WELCOMED Abby Fergus as her personal assistant creating

of three per cent, with no interest applying if the loan is repaid within two years. Asset threshold lowering Put aside time to review your asset expenditure. Identify any assets (valued up to $1,000) that you need and buy them before the end of the tax year to get the claim to lower your tax bill. Earn more than $180,000 a year? If you’re one of the 75,000 Kiwis impacted by the 39% marginal tax rate, review your business and investment structure with us. The marginal tax rate applies to all employment income over $180,000 a year. It includes extra pay earned in the course of employment, such as bonuses, back pay, redundancy, and retirement payments. It is timely also to review dividend payments. Keeping subsidy records crucial While Covid-19 related wage subsidies and resurgence support payments are

non-taxable, keep accurate records of any subsidy or payment you received and which staff member it was paid to or business expense it was applied to — to ensure non-taxable treatment applies. Staff reimbursements and allowances Make sure you have a good record of any reimbursements and allowances paid to employees for expenditures. Remember: • For telecommunications devices and plans, staff reimbursements are taxexempt up to $5 a week • Working from home (WFH) payments claimed from October 1 2021, allow an additional $15 a week for each employee to be exempt income for other WFH expenditure. Take care everyone and we are here if anyone needs any advice. Corinne and the team — altitudeadvisors.nz. ¢

p Natalia Siopan has invested 35 years into the jewellery trade, ensuring people can get repairs done or new items created

A jeweller’s cafe u by Ann van Engelen

Natalia Siopan has been working in the jewellery trade since she was 15 years old and brought her experience to Waipū last year. “I was in the right place at the right time and entered into a jewellery apprenticeship in Mt Eden, Auckland 35 years ago,” says Natalia. “I travelled overseas gaining ideas for my craft and then opened a shop in Kumeū for five years before moving to bigger premises in Huapai. “We stayed there for 18 years, and before my husband, Ariel and I decided it was time for a change and came to Waipū last year with my sister Tonya and mum Wendy. “Tonya had returned from England after 30 odd years, and we are all loving it here. We didn’t know anyone when we arrived. We had visited for a weekend and loved the feel, and we

thought it was a great place to have a business. “I love doing repair work, which a lot of jewellers won’t do. During my apprenticeship, my employer always said if you can repair something, you can make it. “Every job is different, and I can do six different projects in a day. It is very rewarding seeing something broken come back to life and looking brand new again. “Making something from scratch is a good challenge. I can spend two days creating a nice handmade ring or recycling a piece to make them more wearable. I get a lot of satisfaction from doing that.

Create A New You IN 2022!

“When we secured the premises, it was much bigger than I needed and was previously set up as a cafe. Ariel is a chef, so we decided to continue the cafe as well. “Tonya has done a barista course, and she is on the coffee machine. It works really well, and we use Epic coffee made here in Waipū — it is a beautiful coffee. “We do full cooked breakfasts on Fridays and Saturdays, and during the week, we have things like club sandwiches, croissants and scones. “Our menu is a work in progress as we are still exploring what our customers want. It is nice having the two businesses in one place.

“To look after jewellery, I don’t agree with the polishing dips. I recommend a polishing cloth as the dips leave a film that has to be polished off with a buffing wheel later. “It is good to check the claws and settings every six months and get them polished as often as you want. We do this for as little as $5 per ring. “I believe that jewellery is meant to be worn but don’t wear items while doing things like gardening, horse riding and painting as that is often when they get damaged. “Referring to jewellery repairs, my motto is ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way’, and I love helping people be able to wear special items again.” ¢

March 11 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

State of glory u by Liz Clark

If there was one shrub that stands out above others for its spectacular blooms, it would have to be the Australian native Telopea speciosissima or Waratah. Beyond its native habitat across the Tasman, the waratah has become widely grown in New Zealand. Reaching a height of up to four metres, its large, predominantly red cone-like flowers appear during late spring, attracting tūī and other pollinators into the garden. Being a member of the Protea family, the waratah requires similar growing conditions to its South African cousins. It requires a sandy, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, shelter from strong winds and a warm, sunny position to grow well. Care needs to be taken when choosing a site. Waratahs are highly

susceptible to various fungal diseases resulting in rotting of the root system and death. Ideally, a position on a slight slope to provide drainage is best. When planting, dig the hole twice as large as the plant’s base and at the same depth as the root ball. Remove the plant carefully, avoiding any disturbance to the root system. Position it in the hole, backfill it and gently firm the soil down around it. Mulch around the base of the plant, taking care to avoid the trunk. Feed the plant in late winter with a low phosphorus slow-release fertiliser to encourage strong root development.

Water the plant regularly while it is young. Lack of water will also result in losing the shrub — trickle irrigation is the best option. Pruning should be done after flowering. The flower stems should be cut by half to three-quarters of their length to encourage the plant to produce more flowers for the next growing season. Waratahs can be propagated from fresh seed; however, it’s not guaranteed that the resulting seedlings will be true to type. However, new plants can be grown from cuttings. Take cuttings about 15cm long with four to six leaves

from new spring growth and dip each one into fungicide and root hormone gel. Place into pots filled with seedraising mix, then place the pot in a warm place. Root development takes around six months — plant out the cuttings in autumn. Besides its common red colouring, the waratah also comes in other colours, including pink and white. Cultivars available from nurseries in New Zealand include Bridal Gown, Brimstone Blush, Burgundy, Dawn Fire, Red Embers and Wirrimbirra White. Talk to your local nursery or look online for availability. ¢

March 11 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

p Sisi enjoys painting the koi and goldfish for their bigger belly and colour variety

Layer upon layer u by Ann van Engelen

Sisi Wei has been interested in art since she was a young girl and moved into an artistic career at the end of last year with her 3D resin effect. “I moved from China to New Zealand nine years ago to start a new life,” says Sisi. “Growing up in China, I lived with my grandparents, and my teacher would give us free art lessons after school. “I was constantly drawing on my table at home, but when I finished school, I focussed on work and put my art aside.

Sisi creates her fish art in pāua or scallop shells, leaves, driftwood, wooden bowls and other containers. “As long as the item can hold water, I can pour resin in it. I start with a layer of resin and then begin a sevenstep process to get a whole fish. I had a lot of failures to get to where I am today.

a six-layer process before getting to the scales and whiskers. “The final part is the top fin sitting in the water, and it has to look soft and feathery. “The scallop shells are incredible to work. I gave my mother-in-law some, and her neighbour thought it was real fish and was scared it was going to fall out of the shell.

One customer asked me to paint a turtle because their mother’s pet turtle died, and it looked incredible “My partner Harley and I lived in Warkworth until we had our daughter Taylor and then we moved to Wellsford for a quieter life. “In recent years, I have focussed on portrait drawing and oil painting, and then I experimented with painting koi and goldfish on resin and loved the 3D effect. “Each fish is done in layers, and I do goldfish and koi because they have a bigger belly for effect when you look down on them.”

“The first layer gives me the shadow, and when it dries, I do the next stage, which is usually the two sets of fins, and when that layer dries, I move on the first section of the belly. “The bottom of the tail would be next, and then the middle of the belly, before I start on the eyes, which are extremely tricky. “If you do complicated eyes, it can take three layers of resin to get them looking right. Each fish is created over

“At present, I am drawing two fish on a rock — it is amazing. I love doing these pieces and seeing them come from nothing and, little by little, turn realistic. “I collect the scallop and pāua shells, or friends drop them off to me when they can. “One container has nine fish in a square box, and I can also have groups of fish swimming in different directions.

p Sisi has moved from painting portraits to creating 3D fish images through a resin layering process to get a realistic effect

p As a member of the OWL Community Hub in Wellsford, Sisi says she appreciates the support of the local and visiting community

p Using a wide variety of vessels such as seashells and wooden bowls is an important aspect of Sisi’s creativity

The process is very popular in Asia. I read that a Japanese man got the idea from seeing a bug in tree gum, and he studied it and practised the layering effect. He had plastic bags hanging on walls with fish in — his work is incredible

“I try to be affordable for everyone to get something special, and I do fancy work for commissions as well. “I love that I bring joy to people’s faces. The koi fish in China is said to bring good luck. It can swim backwards and go wherever it wants, and I love the various goldfish colours. “We believe if you can touch a koi and turn it around, it is like a fountain and brings you luck. “I collect the scallop and pāua shells, or friends drop them off to me when they can, and I have also drawn on a coconut shell, which was really effective. “Some customers say their children can’t help but touch them with their little fingers. “If you pour water on them for a minute, it looks really real, but I don’t recommend leaving the water in it for long in case it deteriorates resin. “Resin is very expensive, but I use the best I could find. I still dabble in my other art and recently completed a galaxy painting.

“I am considering doing a painting and pouring resin on it to see how that works. I think it would look really good, especially if I paint on wood instead of canvas. “I love painting portraits of people’s pets and children, and I enjoy doing family groups of children. Last year, I did a portrait of Paul McRae from the OWL hub, which was a lot of fun. “Paul has a lot of wrinkles and whiskers, which added to the character of the drawing, and it was a good challenge. We were pleased with the outcome. “Taylor is seven years old now and loves drawing too. Harley and I encourage her to use her imagination and create her own style and ideas. “She uses my watercolours, art pencils and paints because I think it is important for her to have access to the right materials as her imagination grows. “I always felt that I had to find my own life when I was young, and I found

that life here for me in New Zealand. We visited China a few years ago, and I couldn’t get used to it. “We love living in Wellsford. It is a very inclusive community, and people talk to you and make sure you are OK. “I worked in early childhood education until recently when Harley encouraged me to focus on my art. “He built me a garage to work in so I can make art my career. He helped me paint it, did the floor and all the finishing touches. “Harley is extremely encouraging of me and my work. He has been astonished at some of the things I do. “He says he knows some people can draw, but he thinks some of my work is the best he has ever seen, and that makes me really happy. “Harley works hard for our family, and I am so proud of all he does for us to succeed. “Now that I have found working with resin — I am quite obsessed. I saw ocean scenes online, and that is what got me

intrigued. I follow other artists’ work all over the world. “I watch them work online every day and think about how they accomplish what they do, and that has helped me progress forward. “My next big project I am working on is fish on a rock, and I am very excited. People can see my work at Sisi art gallery on Facebook and the OWL Community Hub in Wellsford at the old Wellsford library. “I love being a part of the OWL hub. It is an inspirational place to be, and I love New Zealand — it is my home now. “The culture here allows you to do what you want. I have never regretted making the move and certainly couldn’t have done it without Harley’s love and support. “One day, I would love to travel around New Zealand and find holes in places like park benches, tree roots and footpaths and draw fish for people to find and make them smile.” ¢

Families with children five years and older are invited to join the Junior Athletics Whangārei for the athletics season on Monday afternoons. “Junior athletics is on the rise, and the club has grown tremendously over the past two years,” says parent volunteer Steve Macmillan. “We have this amazing facility that we want to share with others and ensure it is utilised well by the athletic community.” People from Kaipara District, Whāngarei, Wellsford, Waipū, Ruakākā, Kaitaia, Kerikeri and everywhere in between are invited to come to Trigg Stadium, Park Avenue, Whangārei. “We meet every Monday afternoon and cater for children aged five and six from 4pm–4.45pm, and from seven years to teenagers meet from 5pm–6.30pm. “The club is run by volunteers, and we are always keen to have new people helping whether it be at the finish line, entries, measurements or general support. “Volunteering is a great way to get involved with your child’s sport and encourage them along the way with the various codes and activities.

p Madison Macmillan and Taylor Te Ao competing in hurdles

“I have been helping since my daughter Madison joined four or five years ago. I do it to support and encourage her and to give back to the community because I have had so much community suppor t myself over the years.” Steve says it is a great experience to see a child’s athletic ability improve on a weekly basis. “Children develop their skills and have fun. We invite primary, intermediate and secondary school students from around Northland to come and have a go at

running events, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot-put and discus. “Madison improved her 1,500 metres run time by 20 seconds in two weeks, and she had never run the 1,500 in her life. It was a huge achievement for her at 10 years old. “It is great to see the different children excel and learn various disciplines, and the club gives opportunities they may otherwise not get. “Being a volunteer is also a way to make great friendships whether you are a parent, grandparent, family friend or community member. We are

all passionate about helping children improve their abilities. “Athletics is so good, for not just fitness, but also hand and eye coordination and goal setting. It would be great to one day look back and see that this was the catalyst for producing some Northland track and field Olympians and possibly world champions.” For more information, contact juniorathleticswhangarei@ gmail.com or check out Junior Athletics Whangarei Facebook page. ¢
