p Northland Emergency Services Trust chief executive Craig Gibbons is thankful for community support and the annual Westpac Chopper Appeal

This Friday, Westpac staff around the country will be out and about raising funds for their local rescue helicopter service in the annual fundraising street appeal. “Accidents and illness can affect any of us at any time,” says Westpac New Zealand chief executive Catherine McGrath. “The rescue helicopter crews are working harder than ever to save lives. Knowing help could be only minutes away, even in some of our most remote locations, is so important in a country as diverse as ours. “We have learned over the last couple of years that we can live, work and explore from almost anywhere. Knowing the chopper crews are

grateful for everyone who’s able to donate over the month of May.” One Northland woman has the quick response of emergency services and the Northland Rescue Helicopter that delivered her to Whangārei Hospital to thank for still being here today. She accidentally disturbed a wasps’ nest while clearing bush on her rural lifestyle block. “My face, mouth and tongue were swelling, making it hard to breathe, and despite my daughter trying to help me up, it was impossible,” she says. “I was just too weak and so poisoned from the toxicity of the stings. I had never experienced anything like it. I couldn’t sit up, and it was hard to make sense of what I was saying due to my slurring.

there for you when you need them is so important. “We know that living is getting more expensive, so every dollar donated is incredibly appreciated. All money donated in your region goes straight to your local chopper service, so you know that your donation is supporting your community.” Northland Emergency Services Trust chief executive Craig Gibbons says the public’s generosity has helped the trust keep improving the capabilities of its aircraft and crew. “It is great to see people out exploring our own beautiful country at every opportunity, but it does mean we have seen an increase in people needing our assistance,” says Mr Gibbons. “We rely on donations from the public to keep our Northland Rescue Helicopters in the sky, and we are hugely

“ Wh e n p a ra m e d i c s a rrive d, adrenaline was urgently administered as a Northland Rescue Helicopter headed to the property.” In the hospital, 13 live wasps were found on her head, and a handful more in her socks were still stinging her legs. In the weeks that followed, she contended with chronic itching and acute tenderness. The patient has lived to enjoy time with her children, grandchildren, friends and whānau and is forever grateful for the care she received that day. Westpac funds the marketing and administration costs of the Chopper Appeal, as well as distributing all funds raised back to donors’ local rescue helicopter trust. Students from schools across Northland entered the Tai Tokerau Regional Shakespeare Festival recently, with 30 students set to compete at the nationals in Wellington. “Shakespeare in the Park was a wonderful day, with five Northland schools competing and presenting a variety of scenes from Shakespeare plays,” says Tai Tokerau regional festival coordinator, Debi Walters-Brown. “It was a shame for students who couldn’t perform due to the Covid restrictions as Northland students all tend to punch above their weight on stage.” Based in Waipū, Debi is the head of drama at Tauraroa Area School, runs musical events like Classics at the Cove

They are well known across the country for their professionalism. “Stuart has performed on stage around New Zealand for three decades and also adjudicates and runs student courses and workshops. He has performed in more shows than I can remember. “Laurel started directing when she was at Whangārei Girls High School and kicked off the Company of Giants

As well as the beautiful costumes and colours of the plays, the Hātea River was on display as the festival was held on the grass banks next to the Riverbank Centre, home to Whangārei Theatre Company. “The audience of around 100 people loved the outside atmosphere. Fifty performers joined the audience in between plays. Vying for a place in the national competition in Wellington, the students that performed were

in Whangārei for students to meet and perform outside of school. She is currently on Shortland Street and has taught around New Zealand. “Stuart and Laurel selected a 15-minute piece and a five-minute scene from Tararua School from Romeo and Juliet to attend the Shakespeare Festival Awards in Wellington on Queen’s Birthday weekend. “A position then opened up to send Whangārei Boys’ High School. We are bursting with pride and excitement. “People need to know how great these youth are at acting. They have done an awesome job and are excited

They need to raise the airfares and accommodation for the four-day intensive training and performance opportunity.” The fundraiser production is Shakespeare performance scenes where tragedy and comedy collide. “Scenes in the fundraiser are excerpts from the best comedies and tragedies in Shakespeare with scenes from The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet and King Lear. There is an audience limit of 100.” The shows are on Saturday, May 7 at 5pm and 7pm at 116 Bank Street Whangārei. The matinee is on Sunday, May 8 at 1pm. Enthusiasts create club u by Ann van Engelen

A group of Kaipara artists have formed the Art Club Kaipara to give people across the district the opportunity to join together and create. “We are all-inclusive and at present gather on a monthly basis at a different place each time,” says art club member Beth Stone. “We came up with the idea during the Covid restrictions. People who were not vaccinated couldn’t get access to certain places due to the rules. From there, we wanted to create a place for people from all walks of life to come, including religious and non-religious people, vaxxed and unvaxxed. “We realised that people wanted company and a bit of help when they were stuck with an artwork. Mindful of indoor gathering guidance, our first meeting was at Home and Hobbies in

Mangawhai, and the next was at Valley Vista Eco Retreat. The club gives the opportunity for ongoing support and companionship with people of like minds. It is also a place to show others what you are working on. “It is a friendly, supportive little group that we envisage will grow in the future. We don’t name anything to a town as such because it is open to anyone in the Kaipara District. “People bring along the art or craft project they are working on, and we have fun together. If anyone is stuck for ideas or has a problem with their work, we can all help work things out. People bring whatever they are working on.

“One lady is doing collage and another makes decoupage pieces. We had a Chilean man come who came and cooked for us, and one of the ladies sketched him while he was there. We have bits and pieces that people donate, so if someone wants to try something new, they are welcome to look through what we have. “We welcome crafts as well as art, as there is almost no practical difference between the two. People can try something new and experiment with various mixed media and get tuition. “We aim to hold children’s classes and themed adult workshops in the future. It

may be pottery, sculpture, watercolour or collage, and we plan to make full use of any online tutorials available. “We are loving meeting the new people that come along. The company and inspirational atmosphere are very buzzy, and we have a lot of fun. Everybody is happy to look, learn and share ideas and knowledge. We have food, wine and art — what more could you ask for. “The next Art Club Kaipara meeting location will be advertised on the Mangawhai Creatives Facebook page as the Art Club Kaipara, or for more information, call Beth on 027 493 7801.” ¢

Ballroom dancer Lisa Christmas is using her years of experience to help others to be confident on the dance floor in Mangawhai. “I have had the honour of learning from leading New Zealand and Australian coaches throughout my competitive career,” says Lisa. “I am a dog lover and very keen gardener and propagate roses. I accidentally found ballroom dancing in my 30s and loved it. It encapsulated my love of music and the beauty of dance, which stemmed from a history of ballet from the age of seven. “I would listen to my mother’s music collection, including Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and musicals such as Cabaret. In

and have taught medallists, social and competitive dancers since. “I am committed to the development and excellence of our dance genre and intend to start a weekly social ballroom class. This includes lessons on social foxtrot, waltz, cha-cha-cha and rumba, which is partner dancing. “Dancing includes people from all ages and walks of life and is a great community to be part of. I have the community hall in Fagan Place booked for Thursdays from 7–8pm for ballroom lessons starting May 5.

Dancing is designed for everybody — we all have our own journey

my pre-teens, I heard the Rolling Stones, the Troggs and Simon and Garfunkel coming from my older sister’s bedroom. Joe Cocker and Van Morrison were the first albums I purchased. “I am a regular adjudicator in the greater Auckland region and am an active teacher of dance in the Waikato and Auckland regions. The majority of my competitive career saw my partner Doug Pouwhare, and I graded Level five, Masters one and Level four Adult. “We competed nationally and internationally and were New Zealand representatives to the South Pacific Championships. “My lessons are designed to get people around the dance floor, with a person in your arms. The dance level I teach will depend on who turns up. I am expecting no skill level at all, but for those who cry, ‘I have two left feet’, I have been there and done that. I believe if you can walk, you can dance. “Dancing is designed for everybody — we all have our own journey. May 6 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

A prickly affair u by Liz Clark

At one stage or another during a gardener’s journey, picking up the odd cactus plant or two from friends or the local nursery is part of the course. Love or loathe them. These droughtadapted plants have more than 1,500 named species in various shapes and sizes, with or without the spines they’re usually associated with. Growing in habitats from ranging deserts to mountainous regions and even in trees, they’re found throughout the North and South American continents. Cacti have been grown in New Zealand homes and gardens since the 19th century — the most popular among them being the zygocactus or chain cactus, as it’s more commonly known. Its segmented spineless stems make it an ideal house plant, especially for those not keen on getting

their fingers pricked or who have young children at home. Long-lived and easy to grow, chain cactus flowers during late wintertime. The blooms vary in shades of pink, pinky white, red, purple, orange and cerise. Zygocactus need plenty of light for good growth and long dark nights to induce flowering. Don’t allow the plant to completely dry out, or it will reduce the chances of it flowering. Occasional liquid feeding with a low nitrogen fertiliser is all it requires to thrive. Avoid overwatering, or your beloved plant will end up rotting. These cacti can also be

grown in trees in frost-free sheltered situations or planted in hanging baskets. Propagation is a simple process. Break off a stem and set it aside for 24 hours to allow the broken edge to seal itself. Use a good-quality, potting mix and push vertically into a small pot. Leave indoors in a warm, dry spot for a few months to give time for the roots to form. Transplant to a slightly larger pot once the root ball is fully formed. It’s an ideal botanical to start children off with growing indoor plants. For a decorative effect, mass plant different species of small low-growing

cacti in terracotta pots to give a dramatic accent to a courtyard garden or entranceway. Use a specialised cactus potting mix for your plants. Unless you have a very large garden and don’t mind the spines, avoid planting large species such as prickly pear cactus. Dry gardens should be built up with a sandy soil medium, well above the base surface layer. Avoid areas with poor drainage or too much shade. Some cacti species are rare and difficult to obtain, whereas others are more common. More information about cacti species available in New Zealand can be found via the Cactus and Succulent Society of NZ (Auckland Branch) Facebook page. ¢

Tournament assists charities u by Ann van Engelen

The annual Marsden Lions Club Charity Golf Tournament is set for Friday, May 13, with teams of all ages and golfing ability, ready to take to the course in support of local charities. “We raise funds for Ruakākā Surf Lifesaving Club, the Northland Rescue Helicopters, St John Bream Bay and Ruakākā Volunteer Fire Brigade through our emergency services tournament,” says Marsden Lions’ Gladys Rowsell. “This year, we have 72 players signed up. It is thanks to Waipū Golf Club, Ocean View Cafe, Marsden Print, and the business sponsors for each hole that the day is such a success. It is an amazing show of community support for these vital services that communities rely on, and every player gets a prize. “It is a shotgun ambrose day with auctions and raffles. It is a fun day for

the community, and all profits raised go to the four emergency services.” A shotgun start is a golf tournament format in which all groups of players tee off simultaneously from different holes. “Most people believe in the survival of things, and there are a lot of organisations that rely on the money raised by their communities. To us, at Marsden Lions Club, it is essential to support these charities, so we have them available to our communities. “On average, we raise around $10,000 profit, which we split between the charities. The funds are really

appreciated by those who receive them. St John and the rescue chopper have a team playing, as do sponsors such as Tara Iti and other businesses, including people who have never played before.” Paul Ahlers, Northland Emergency Services Trust chair, says he is grateful for the ongoing support of the Marsden Lions Club. “They support Northland Rescue Helicopter and other worthy causes year in and year out, and that makes a real difference in our community. “I think you will find all of the worthy causes benefitting from this fundraiser are becoming busier every year, and

it really is the Kiwi way to roll up your sleeves and help out each other. I also would like to acknowledge all of the volunteers that help out on the day with this fundraising golf tournament. “In 2021, Nor thland Rescue Helicopter recorded an all-time record of 1,289 missions — up from 1,115 in 2020 and 953 in 2019. By May 1, 2022, flight numbers had already reached 412. “I am certainly looking forward to getting out on Waipū Golf Course and seeing some familiar faces, talking about the work we do and finding out about other people’s stories.” ¢

Helping conservation work u by Ann van Engelen

This week, the Royal New Zealand Air Force is giving practical help to the Piroa-Brynderwyns Landcare Collective at the Brynderwyn Ranges. The collective has more than 30 community-led conservation projects and aims to restore biodiversity in the Brynderwyn Ranges and environs. The group works across a high-value area spanning more than 22,374 hectares, which is home to three threatened and 11 regionally significant plant species, and 10 threatened and five regionally significant fauna. “The project has grown significantly over the past year,” says local Coastal South constituency representative Councillor Rick Stolwerk. “It is great to see all the long-standing volunteers getting a boost and some

potentially be incorporated into the Te Araroa Trail. This passes over the Wairahi Conservation Estate, and they will also install a bait station network in the adjoining Department of Conservation Reserve. “The air force’s help will enable the team to complete the project within five working days and meet major milestones in conservation and recreational plans in the area. This would otherwise take many months to complete.” The work will open an important alternative track to the public, moving walkers off the public roadside to enjoy the natural landscape and seascape of

The project has grown significantly over the past year muscle power in the form of support from the air force to tackle and expand the mahi in the area. “On Monday, approximately 25 air force staff arrived to join the volunteers of Piroa-Brynderwyns Landcare. They are working to progress important conservation efforts that benefit the local community. “The team is working with the Wairahi Tracks Charitable Trust and Mangawhai Trackies. The groups are well known in the area, having cut in many walking tracks that the public enjoys. “This week’s focus is cutting in a new section of walking trail that will

the area by travelling via a connected network of tracks. “A high number of indigenous plants, the native Hochstetter’s frog, and longfin eel also inhabit this area. Its diverse forest habitat attracts kākā, tomtit, bellbird, New Zealand pigeon, fernbird populations, and red-crowned kākāriki are also occasional visitors from the Hen and Chicken Islands off the Bream Bay Coast.” More than 40 kiwi were released in the Piroa/Brynderwyn HVA from 2012 and are now successfully breeding and beginning to expand their range throughout the area.

p Volunteer Peter Hunt checking a trap in the high-value area of the Piroa-Brynderwyn hills

“The NRC has supported more than 20 biosecurity environment fund projects since 2010. This has seen work undertaken to control various introduced pests and weeds, with growing interest from the community to do more. “Significant effort has been made to reduce the number of pests in the area during the past two years alone. This includes the removal of thousands

of possum and rodents, along with hundreds of wild pigs, feral cats and mustelids and more than a million moth plant seeds. “The air force’s work adds tremendous value to the community’s efforts to secure safe corridors for kiwi to safely disperse and other rare and unique species present in the Piroa-Brynderwyn hills, including long-tailed bats.” ¢

p Often found with her dog Annie, Glennis Browne never imagined that she would one day become an author of novels based on history

Author follows history u by Ann van Engelen

Historical novel author Glennis Browne was born in Dunedin, the daughter of a farmer, and is now based in One Tree Point. “We moved to Canterbury when I was young, and I lived there until I married my husband Trevor,” says Glennis. “After training as a primary school teacher in Christchurch, we moved to New Plymouth, where I taught. We later returned to Canterbury, where we had our two sons and owned a celery farm and other businesses.

historical novels based on the 1850s, focussing on questions my research revealed about spiritual beliefs and my family history. “I discovered over the years certain religious attitudes were formed on Calvinistic beliefs throughout Wales. Calvinism is based on the belief of a guy who broke away from the

family names. I discovered a great-greatgreat-grandfather who was a Calvinist evangelist for 50 years in Wales. “My great-great-grandfather was a curator of the church. I had lots of questions about attitudes, and through my ancestry research, a cousin in Germany contacted me. He is a skilled researcher, having found articles in

I was brought up Christian, and some of these creeds came through my family “In 1990, we sold the farm as it was no longer cost-effective due to the market changes. We then moved to Kerikeri, and I began researching my family tree and attended bible college in Whangārei to learn more about Christianity. “That is when I started general writing. We moved to Australia in 2009 to spend time with family because our grandchildren had arrived. “I then started researching my family history seriously and began writing

Anglican church and took on their own beliefs. “I was brought up Christian, and some of these creeds came through my family. In the early 2000s, Trevor and I visited the places in England that we discovered in my family tree. “We ended up in Wales travelling to a tiny village called Nevern where we visited the cemetery in the old stone church, which was built in Viking times. Amongst the gravestones were my

magazines and newspapers about my family. “He sent me copies of what he had found, and I discovered that some family members had kept a lot of history quiet. “The title of the series is Journeys of the Fortune Seekers. The first book follows the characters Dan and Charlotte as they venture out into the big wide world, facing repercussions from their decisions and attitudes.

p Glennis has written three historical novels based on the life of her family and is currently working on book number four

p Glennis and her husband Trevor travelled around New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom researching her family history

p Walking the local beaches is one of Glennis’s favourite ways to relax

My mum used to say Dad’s parents never talked about his family, and we always wondered why. Now I realise my grandad was ashamed of the family history and kept it from the later generations “Dan was 18 years old and lived in Wales, and his dad banished him from the family home and Calvinistic community. “Charlotte lived in England and was 17 years old, and her problems began with Charles Darwin’s teaching. “Darwin believed cousins shouldn’t marry, and Charlotte’s problem is what to do in the 1850s if you are pregnant with your cousin’s baby? Your child would be classed as a bastard back then, and you would be known as a loose woman. “What was she to do? In the later books, we discover gold mining, bankruptcy, pioneering and life in the Australian back blocks, and the struggles of being an early settler come to life. “It was helpful that Trevor and I toured Australia in our caravan, visiting many places in the outback of Australia where my family lived. “We visited places my family lived, such as Echuca and Coalville, and I was able to gather a lot of information. “The series, Journeys of the Fortune Seekers, is about the plight of early

settlers in Australia struggling to make a living gold mining, living very bittersweet lives. “The second book, Power and Authority, deals with the masculine world and the difficulties of women in the temperance movement. It affected families and the journey they took with their children while dealing with alcohol abuse. “The third, called Temperance, is based in New Zealand at the turn of the century in the 1900s with my greatgrandparents. It also deals with family life and lots of children living remotely and alcohol abuse. The stories are reallife circumstances faced by my family after they settled in the gold mining and coal fields of Central Otago before growing fruit near Alexandra. “My fourth book, Secrets, deals with secrets on my dad’s side of the family discovered in my cousin’s findings in newspapers such as the Truth. “This book was in process when Covid happened, and I am just now able to get

writing again. I aim to publish it by the end of the year. “My mum used to say Dad’s parents never talked about his family, and we always wondered why. Now I realise my grandad was ashamed of the family history and kept it from the later generations. “I have found I absolutely love writing. Even though I trained as a teacher, it didn’t mean I could write. I had so much to learn. A cousin, who is an English teacher, now proofreads for me, and that is a wonderful help being a self-publisher. “It is enlightening to discover something new such as Charles Darwin’s beliefs. He expounded on cousins not marrying because he was sure the problems between him and his wife were family issues. “She was a cousin, and health issues came through in their children. He believed the gene pool was too close, and family traits can get worse if you marry cousins. It makes sense.

“I love exploring the issues and putting them in books that make the readers think as they are entertained. I like helping consider why their parents think as they do, and it actually goes back to the 1850s. “I intend to carry on writing the story of my journey as I learn about myself and my family. Glennis Browne Fiction Author is my Facebook page. I also blog about mental health. “I enjoy gardening, walking the beaches and going to Two Birds Cafe in Ruakākā. We have four hens and our dog Annie. We love One Tree Point. Trevor found Queensland too hot, and we didn’t know where to go. “We found this area through a friend who lived nearby, and we came here for a visit and loved it. “The beaches are beautiful and within walking distance for us, the community is extremely friendly and supportive — it was a great choice. We are looking forward to the growth that is happening here.” ¢

By studying at ITC I was given the resources and ability to practise all stages of an interview process.
