“I came to Mangawhai for the Mangawhai Activity Zone skatepark and never left,” says Daniel. “I’m now very involved at MAZ. I was meant to stay in Auckland, but I came here and fell in love with Mangawhai almost immediately. I had lived in Hawaii in my 20s, as I was a professional downhill skateboarder and travelled the world following the world circuit but New Zealand roads rapidly put an end to that. “Mangawhai is the closest thing to Hawaii that I could find as an Australian without needing visas to live here. I had surfed growing up, and one day, I watched my friend make two surfboards for a trip to Fiji.

other is polyresin. Epoxy needs a lot of drying time, whereas poly is quicker. I do things like replace fibreglass and then match the paint or resin tint. “Keeping the right shape is the hard thing as they are specifically shaped to travel through water. If you mess up the contours of the repair, you change how it performs. “I love my job. I was a gibstopper before this, so it’s similar in method, although the materials vary. Gib board is flat and white, and every job is exactly the same, but with surfboards, every ding is different. Boards are different colours and shapes, so there is more creative freedom.

With summer here, everyone needs to be safe out on the water “I decided to try and make one, and I did. My friends found out that I had all the materials and started getting me to fix the dings in their boards. Things snowballed, and Small Kine Ding Repairs was born. You make a lot of friends when you have resin and fibreglass. “I do make a few boards when the repairs are slow. I have a shaping bay, which I split with Justin Howse, who manages the Mangawhai Tavern, and I glass his boards.” Daniel suggests getting surfboards fixed sooner rather than later if there is damage. “Any damage that lets water in needs repairing quickly, because foam hates water. There are two standard types of construction. One is epoxy resin, and the

“With summer here, everyone needs to be safe out on the water. Surfing has become hugely popular, and I recommend new surfers study the etiquette well — technique comes with practice. “Young guys need to understand there are important factors on the water, and you can smack someone or yourself in the head with your board if you’re not careful. I’d love to see surf schools spend more time teaching etiquette as well because you can cut people with your fins or knock people out by pushing in when it’s not your turn. “People can check my Small Kine Ding Repairs social media pages and see what I do. I’m here — if you kook it, I can fix it.” ¢

Wairahi Charitable Trust volunteers, working closely with Whangārei District Council contractors, have recently completed a major upgrade of the very popular coastal walkway between Waipu Cove and Langs Beach. “The trust was formed in 2020 with the primary objective of developing a network of walking tracks in the Langs Beach and surrounding area,” says chair John Tapper. “The coastal walkway is a vital link in developing this network. The aim of the trust is to enable residents and visitors to exercise in and enjoy the beauty of our very special environment. “Wairahi is a name long associated with our place. It is thought to mean either roaring waters or abundant waters, both suitable names for this treasured area. “One of the earliest maps of the area clearly shows the name Wairahi associated with Langs Beach and may

have been the name for the pā that once occupied the headland at the eastern end of the beach above the cove. “The torrential rain at the end of January caused a major slip at the Waipu Cove end of the track. The council, council contractors, neighbouring landowners and the trust volunteers banded together to get the slip repaired. “We had all hands on deck over last summer to improve the surface of the track and make it safer. Countless bags of metal were filled and carried to vantage points on the track. Our Trackies volunteer team has recently completed building and filling with metal the last set of steps at the Ding Bay end of the

track. They did sterling work and deserve a special mention. “There was also an incredible amount of flax planting along the walkway. Thanks to a happy band of committed volunteers, progress to date has been excellent. Still, possibly our greatest achievement has been the growth in community spirit and an increasing awareness of the need to care for our environment. “Much remains to be done to see our vision progress, and we welcome anyone who would like to join our volunteer group or become a financial supporter. “The Friday Trackies meet every Friday morning at 9am in the car park opposite the entrance to the Langs Beach Scenic

Reserve. We finish at 11am with morning tea and tasty treats. “The Saturday Weedies meet each Saturday at the car park for two hours of planting, weeding and summer watering in the wetland and roadside reserves. The time varies depending on the season. On the third Saturday of each month, the group also works on weed control along the Waipu Coastal Trail. “Once again, we are sincerely thankful to Mountfield Quarries, Northpine Ltd and Waipu ITM for their support. While a large part of this work was funded by Whangārei District Council, without the generosity of our supporters, we would not have been able to complete the project.” ¢

Memories support Starship u by Ann van Engelen

Players in the Butch Chadwick Memorial Cup golf competition held at the Wellsford Golf Club recently made memories on the golf course while raising funds for Starship Hospital. “A great day was had by all and we raised more than $2,000, which was an incredible effort,” says organiser Martin Worthington. Heinrich Muller and Kurtis Gwyn were the winners of the memorial cup. “I have been playing golf for three years now,” says Kurtis. “It began with my dad doing the classic ‘trying to get his son into a sport’ thing. About a year ago, I started playing by myself and with friends as a social

Everyone laughed as I was surrounded by 13-year-olds who were very good for their age. “I highly recommend kids get involved in the sport — it’s a ‘the more, the merrier’ type of game. Martin and the organisers did a great job. They created a tournament that was only won and lost by one stroke. I loved the way the adults couldn’t carry the youth. It was an actual team effort and was a fun, memorable evening.”

Forty teams turned up, and we proudly raised more than $2,000 for Starship

thing. I recently became a member at the Wellsford Golf Club and saw the competition, so I decided to join in.” As a 21-year-old, Kurtis came under the junior category. “My friend is 25 years old, which is an adult at Wellsford Golf Club, and I saw it was an adult and junior team competition, which made it more fun for us. We won by one stroke, which was close. I guess we both played some of the best golf we have played recently, and it was a great day out. “I was partnered with the event sponsor, and it was a very nice game.

Martin says Butch passed away two years ago, and he wanted to organise something to honour his memory at the club. “He really gave up his time to help others with the sport. It’s nice to have started something in his memory. He worked hard to ensure children had the opportunity to play. He wanted the club to be open to all people, including friends, grandkids, daughters and grandparents. “Butch’s commitment to the game inspired me and is the reason I now teach junior players the art of golf. He was a real pillar of the club, and we love

that we now have something fitting to raise funds for charity in his memory. Those who don’t normally play but knew Butch came along and had a go. “We had lots of prizes thanks to Barfoot and Thompson sponsoring the day. We are very grateful for their

support. Forty teams turned up, and we proudly raised more than $2,000 for Starship. It was really nice for Butch to be recognised and for us to have his family come out and see how much we appreciated him and all he did for the club.” ¢

Celebrating the now u by Ann van Engelen

The Ruakākā Villy Day Out was thrilled to see more than 2,000 community members come together to celebrate each other and life last Saturday. “Despite the weather, we had an amazing day with people coming from near and far,” says founder Bobby Joe Paikea. “The Villy Day Out began in 2018 when one of my best friend’s partner and son died in a car accident here in Ruakākā. The pair were connected to four local families. About four weeks later, another friend from my school days died in an accident close to my home,

and the two incidents left the community with a big heaviness. “As a result, a group of us decided to do something to celebrate our community, our life and our unity now, rather than when someone dies or when something bad happens. On November 17 2018, Villy Day Out was born, and it’s getting bigger and better each year. “Businesses support us by donating things like kids’ prizes, vouchers or

grocery hampers. This year was extra amazing with a trailer load of prizes. The highlight was seeing all the kids’ smiling faces. “We’re grateful to our service providers, including Safe Man — Safe Family for helping and the Ruakākā Fire Brigade, which came with obstacle courses and activities for the children. “St John did ambulance tours, and the police had their dog handlers

doing demonstrations. There were so many contributors to make the day a success. “Ruakākā and One Tree Point Primary Schools did amazing performances, as did the Professionals ukulele group, and people enjoyed the free sausage sizzle, bottled water and a hāngī thanks to the Pumipi whānau. The day was a blast and we’re certainly looking forward to next year’s event.” ¢

Sweeter without the thorns u by Liz Clark

Who doesn’t love the sweet taste of ripe summer blackberries or has risked the thorns to fill up a container to get some sweet treats to go with the dessert? It’s wonderful to think we can look back on childhood memories of going blackberry picking, going on farms or by the roadside to get a delicious treat for a warm summer night. However, the blackberry, with its rampant growth and rather nasty thorns, isn’t something we want in the home garden — ever. After reading a story on social media about a seemingly innocent blackberry seedling being planted in a home garden and the owner

finding out they had a rampant monster smothering their lawn, threatening to take over — what’s the alternative? Fortunately, there is a thornless, noninvasive variety that has all the benefits of its wild cousin but without all the problems. It’s available in local garden centres, especially now spring is in full swing and shifting to summer. Blackberries will thrive in full sun, are cold-hardy and do well in a well-prepared soil medium with plenty of organic matter to feed the roots and encourage

robust growth. The site chosen should be sheltered from strong winds. As the plants get established, the canes will become heavier and will need good support. Tall steel waratahs or timber posts with netting, fence or a wall with trellis are suitable supports. Feed the plants throughout the growing season with blood and bone, plus sheep pellets to maintain good fruiting. Use bird netting to prevent the berries from being eaten before they are harvested. Pruning should be done

in late summer or early autumn by cutting out the weakest shoots and leaving three strong canes for the following season’s fruiting. For the wild blackberry species? The best treatment to get rid of these rampant plant pests in the garden is to cut the canes close to ground level. Treat with an application of picloram gel on each stump, taking caution not to allow any of this herbicide to make contact with the soil or it will affect desirable plants. ¢

Longtime friends Kay Airey and Rosemary Eagles have joined forces to present the From Our Land exhibition at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery. “The artwork is inspired by the land or whenua, from the earth’s clay to the delights of nature shown on canvas,” says Mangawhai Artists chair Belinda Vernon. Rosemary says throughout 30 years of painting, New Zealand’s incredibly diverse landscape has been her inspiration. “My journey began painting with oil paints and, as my work became more expressive, I shifted to acrylics, which has given me greater freedom in my painting,” says Rosemary. “The inspiration for my work comes from the places I have visited, often

and then abstracting it out. It’s a creative journey where I discover different layers, reworking areas and maybe painting over, sanding and wiping out areas to achieve my vision and structure of the painting. “This process emerges over many sittings, and it is exciting to see the layers and spaces within the painting evolve, inviting the possibility through chance and accidental (yet beautiful) discovery. “I love exploring different ideas and processes whilst continuing to learn. It is by creating and combining all my years of painting that I find new discoveries

I’ve explored the clouds above through to the strata below our feet holidays with family and friends where I take photographic shots, then return to my studio where I work on translating the vastness onto a canvas. “Whether it’s a rocky foreshore, coastal plants, beautiful bush, tropical fauna, majestic mountain vistas or moody skies, New Zealand’s natural beauty continues to inspire me. “Since graduating from Whitecliffe School of Art and Design in 1990, I’ve explored the clouds above through to the strata below our feet, with land and seascapes in between. I love the challenge around working with a subject

and ways to express myself, and that is both exciting and rewarding. “I love to know that my paintings are enjoyed in homes throughout New Zealand as well as owned by collectors in many countries throughout the world.” A ceramic artist, Kay comes from an advertising and TV production background, while Rosemary describes herself as a modern contemporary artist. “I’ve always loved the world of pottery and its wonderful contrast to the highend world of advertising,” says Kay. “Now that I’ve moved from Auckland to Mangawhai, I have more

time to spend potting in my home studio and running workshops for beginner potters. “All of my ceramics are hand-formed. From domestic ware to larger outdoor sculptures and, on this occasion, I have a selection of originally designed candle holders. “I’ve recently purchased a kiln, and am loving having the flexibility to fire

my own and others’ work. I have been involved in several joint exhibitions as part of Auckland Studio of Potters, and last year, had a successful solo exhibition of outdoor sculpture at Mangawhai Artists Gallery.” From Our Land is open from 10am to 3pm until Wednesday, December 6 at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, 45 Moir Street. ¢

p Damien’s dog, Molly, is often on hand to welcome visitors to the property

Where the buffalo roam u by Ann van Engelen

Growing up in Malaysia, Damien Stephen learned the art of cooking from his mother, and since arriving in New Zealand, he has upskilled himself and makes cheese and yoghurt and has an extensive vegetable garden at the haven he has created in Mangawhai for his buffalo herd. “I grew up in Penang and learned to cook because my mum was a caterer,” says Damien. “In 1988, I came to New Zealand for a holiday and was offered a job on the west coast of the South Island as a chef. I then went to polytec in Nelson to upskill myself.” Damien ended up growing a chain of cafes in Auckland called Pickles with a business partner.

“There is also the Asian buffalo breed, but they don’t have as much milk as the Italian. They’re very friendly animals, but you have to spend time with them. “We now have 60 milking buffalo that are 100 per cent grass-fed. We have an 11-aside milking shed and milk once a day. I find them to be very easy calving, and we have a replacement bull coming through that I purchased from another breeder.

“I had considered making cheese for a long time and I am excited to be taking it to the market now. The cheese-making facility took approximately five years to organise, and we have plans to expand the area for entertaining and functions in the future. “There’s been a lot of trial and error getting it right, but the Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock brand now has two beautiful cheeses — the Haloumi style,

To our knowledge, we’re the only people doing buffalo products like this in Northland “A few years earlier, I had started planning my future and saw some River Rhine Italian buffalo for sale and thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?’ So I bought them. “We eventually sold the cafes, and 13 years ago, I found this property at 644 Mangawhai Road as a way to change pace, live off the land and grow my own food. I brought my herd here, and they roam the hills — it’s a beautiful spot for them.

“Buffalo are very similar to a cow. Although they produce a lot less milk than a cow, their milk is a lot richer and higher in milk solids. We make cheese and yoghurt because you get a better yield and can make more than double from their product.” Damien has Ministry of Primary Industries approval and recently had a purpose-built cheese factory built on his property, fondly called Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock.

which we call Grilled Cheese, and feta, which we call White Cloud. We also make a beautiful yoghurt. “Our grilled cheese is different from the halloumi made with cow’s milk. Halloumi is often used as a meat replacement and is traditionally made from sheep or goat milk. Buffalo grilled cheese is a lot less cardboardy and not as squeaky. It’s more subtle, easy on the pallet and nice to eat. To me, it’s spectacular. It’s creamy in flavour

and holds its shape when you fry it. It is good for protein and can be used in salads as well. Our feta is also very nice. It has a salty, tangy taste, and the texture depends on its age. It’s extra creamy at its freshest and then can be slightly crumbly. “Feta has many uses as well. It can go on your salads or whipped with yoghurt and put over pasta. Some people cook it in the pan and fry eggs on top, and it’s very nice on a cheese board. “Our products are not homogenised, and the whole herd of buffalo is A2A2. A2A2 milk has double protein, double calcium and half the cholesterol compared to cow’s milk, which means it is more digestible. People who are intolerant to lactose often find they are able to have A2A2. “I’ve always wanted to make yoghurt, and mine is 100 per cent milk and culture, nothing else, no sugars or other additives. Because buffalo milk has higher butter fat than cows, the yoghurt is very silky, rich and naturally thick, and it can be used for many things. It has an amazing texture.

“To our knowledge, we’re the only people doing buffalo products like this in Northland, and I’m one of the only people manufacturing buffalo cheese and yoghurt on-site. “Buf falo meat is lovely. It’s leaner, higher in protein and has less fat content, meaning it’s healthier for you, but it tastes similar to cow.” Damien’s partner, Susan, has her own landscaping business. “Susan oversees our gardens. We have a range of fruit trees, including apples, pears, grapes and stone fruit such as plums and peaches. We also have an extensive vegetable garden with all types of vegetables and sell them freshly picked on Saturdays from 7am– 3pm at the farm. “Diversifying into vegetables has been a good thing. Our raised boxes and big beds have things like lettuce, silverbeet, kale, herbs, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. We don’t spray at all. We use a natural product to eliminate pests such as caterpillars and other natural remedies.

“Susan is very hands-on and oversees all the gardening. We grew grapevines down the driveway with the intention to make our own wine one day.” Damien and Susan also use the property to comfortably entertain groups of up to approximately 20 people for meals. “I do things like making bee balm from the wax from our own bee hives. We cook a meal, do a craft and take our guests on a garden tour. “My kitchen is set up with a pizza oven and an industrial stove. People get to mingle outside by our water fountain in the courtyard as well. We can make our own breads and pizza and generally cook things grown on the farm. “Using our own meat, vegetables and cheese means people can experience food from the paddock to the table. We keep things as local as possible so people who don’t know can get a better understanding of where food comes from. “The kitchen is open so they can watch us cook and get tips on how to

do things like make fresh pasta, pizza or other meals. Some of the fruit trees growing along the driveway are placed to grow up the fence posts and along the fence line for aesthetics. “It looks beautiful for people celebrating birthday parties or special occasions. We also do cooking classes and can house two couples to stay for a weekend of classes. “We call ourselves Corner Paddock because we are where Waiteitei Road, Silverhill Road and Mangawhai Road meet, so it’s fitting. It’s a great location and easy for travellers passing by to find us. “Susan and I enjoy our lifestyle here. Growing our own food is working with nature and the environment. Knowing where our food comes from is what led us to the idea. We have people come for their vegetables every week, and that makes us feel good. “Our farm is our life and we’re looking forward to our local and wider community getting to know about our products. We love it here, it’s a dream come true.” ¢

A chance at rugby u by Ann van Engelen

With the help of Taniwha rugby legend Dan Hawkins, the Central Kaipara Whai team is encouraging the younger generation to join the rugby family. “We haven’t had rugby for young teens in the area for a while,” says facilitator Lance Nepia. “I’m a believer that rugby is a good way to make good people. Last year, I got together with players Arapeta Waata and Bron Hanesa as we’d noticed there were no options for local kids. “Myself, Arapeta and Bron are all products of rugby ourselves and love that we got to play growing up. We want to see our kids have those same chances and decided to start something to give our girls and boys the opportunity of rugby. “We began with two under-14 and under-16 teams and had a great community response. The tamariki are absolutely loving it — it’s been awesome.

This season we’re expanding to U18 and a girls’ U16 team.” Alongside CKW, Dan Hawkins and some of his Northland friends will be running a rugby skills development programme for boys and girls. The eightweek programme is free and targets the under 13, 14 and 16 age groups. “Dan teaches high-level stuff and uses his experience with Northland Rugby to help inspire others. They’ll be passing on basic skills in preparation for the upcoming season and working on strength and conditioning, speed and agility, nutrition and recovery. “It’s split into two four-week blocks, running pre-Christmas and post-New Year’s for those interested

in growing their skills in a fun environment. “The rugby brotherhood helps create good people in the community, and I believe the pillar of the brotherhood builds confidence and teamwork. Otamatea Hawks has been a great support and very helpful. Kids between 13 and 17 years old can come along to training no matter how experienced they are. “A lot of kids last year had never played or touched a rugby ball, and by the end of the programme, they loved it. It’s more than playing. We love seeing them gain self-esteem, too. “To come along, kids just turn up. They will need boots and a mouth guard, shorts and a T-shirt, but they can wear

shoes if they don’t have the right gear to start with. We have a boot exchange programme as well if people don’t have boots. “There’s so much potential with kids locally, and our goal is to see All Black and Black Fern jerseys hanging at our club. We’re a team that works in conjunction with the Kaipara Sports Association at their grounds. “We are named Central Kaipara Whai because we want all kids to be able to play and hope to get more than 100 for the teams we hope to have. The first session kicks off on Tuesday, November 28 at the Kaiwaka Sports Association starting at 5pm, and it’s free. Follow the Central Kaipara IMB Rugby Facebook page for more details.” ¢
