p Waipū Lions Club president Malcolm Norton encourages people to donate their recyclable aluminium to Kidney Kids NZ rather than the local tip

“The Lions have collected aluminium wine bottle tops and can tabs for Kidney Kids for many years. Historically they were aircraft-grade aluminium, and you could make good money out of that,” says can man Dave Bell, aka Ding. “One of our members, Marshall Oliver, began the initiative and travelled New Zealand setting up depots, collecting the tops and tabs. After he removed the plastic seal, he crushed them, ready for sale to recycling. It was a painstaking job, and he did it with a passion to help the children and their families.” Kidney Kids NZ provide support and information to children and young adults

for the cans and buy the aluminium product from us. “We placed it at the Waipū RSA, and it took three months to fill. With cans from other sources such as businesses, we ended up with 105kg and received $70, which was better than nothing. “We challenge other Lions Clubs to join us and kickstart Cans for Kidney Kids. We hope to have bins at Wellsford, Ruakākā, Dargaville, Ruawai and beyond. Marsden Metals get two tonnes of cans every month from local transfer stations. We want those for Kidney Kids. The funds go to Starship Hospital to help provide the families with the necessities they need.

We have people who are fanatical about helping raise the money through cans and wine bottle tops to the age of 21 who have any type of kidney or urinary tract disease. Their services include hospital support, home visits, financial assistance, advocacy, community education, Christmas parties and national camps. “Marshall died, and I was asked to continue his work. I found 70kg of tops he had collected and discovered the buyers were no longer paying good money and only got $45. “I talked with other members, and we decided to collect aluminium cans too for the weight, and you don’t have to remove the tabs. We also collect old lead car batteries, and when I took a load to Marsden Metals they offered us a cage

“We have people who are fanatical about helping raise the money through cans and wine bottle tops. If someone hosts a bin, we can collect the contents and make this a huge success. It just needs to be in a place where people can see it. “We really want people to drop their aluminium cans and wine bottle tops in the cages, so Kidney Kids get the funds rather than the local tip. Please put them in a bag and drop them into a bin instead of the recycling. We also accept old aluminium doors and windows. It would be a big slice of the cake for children.” For more information, contact Dave ‘Ding’ Bell on 09 432 0861. ¢

Supporting Mangawhai Kindergarten, the annual Mangawhai Garden Ramble is celebrating 19 years on the weekend of November 13 and 14, lockdowns permitting. “Yes, even with all the complications of the year and especially the last couple of months, the garden owners, organisers and sponsors are preparing for the ramble to go ahead,” says volunteer John Dickie. “This event is the major fundraiser for the local Mangawhai Kindergarten and all proceeds are for the benefit of the children who attend. Our now regular line-up of large and small, country and urban, some old favourites and new offerings applies again. The ramble is offering a total of 17 gardens for viewing over the weekend.” A record of four gardens will be open for night viewing, each with its own characteristics. “The new gardens include a winery and an olive grove, where the accompanying gardens themselves are well worth an inspection. There are also, new to the ramble, gardens with a real tropical feel, one with some practical engineering ideas to examine, one where the animals add to the rural atmosphere and one developed for years tucked away in a mostly new subdivision. “A couple of the old favourites have not been shown for several years but some were shown last year but now have significant differences to what was offered in 2020. Whatever you are looking for in a garden, there is something for you, and the other surprises — a bonus to appreciate.

p There will be old and new gardens opening up for the ramble supporting the Mangawhai Kindergarten

“The organisers are not providing refreshments this year, but at several locations, people can take a rug and picnic, and one garden is offering preordered hampers. “There has been great support as usual from local businesses, and importantly, the event welcomes Wyatts Landscape as the naming sponsor and The Real Team Real Estate who have provided the event street advertising signs around Mangawhai. With all the effort being undertaken by property

p Garden lovers are encouraged to again support the Mangawhai Garden Ramble that is planned for next weekend

owners, organisers and businesses, the event is now asking for garden lovers from around Northland to take advantage of the warming weather, 17 wonderful gardens and join them for the ramble weekend. “We ask that ramblers appreciate that all garden owners, apart from

the Auckland located gardens, are willing to proceed. We ask that you understand this and please follow the guidelines outlined in the ticket.” More details and ticket information are available at mangawhaigarden ramble.org. ¢

p Becs recycles vintage and natural fabrics including linen and lace at Stitch in Time

p Becs Parker delights in turning vintage material into functional handbags and pot plant holders

Revitalising the doily u by Ann van Engelen

Becs Parker became interested in sewing as a child and now prides herself on transforming vintage materials and doilies into functional bags. “My husband Dean and I moved to Mangawhai with our son when his family farm in Tomarata sold,” says Becs. “We like Mangawhai’s close-knit community and being near the beach and school. I grew up in Christchurch and have loved knitting, sewing and craft. People would tell me they had their grandmother’s doilies and vintage materials and didn’t know what to do with them. “I have a bag addiction as well, so I put my love of bags, fabrics and recycling together and came up with cute bag designs. I started Stitch In Time when the Mangawhai Tavern Markets first

opened and also have my products on the Chooice website. “My bags were originally very doily focussed, but now I have more modern contemporary style bags with a little bit of doily in there. I find material easily and cheaply at op shops, and that has helped me be able to offer more affordable prices. “I gravitate toward natural fibres as I love cotton, drill, denim, and linen as I want things to look nice and to be timeless. My cross body bags, coin and makeup pouches are really popular. I also make tote bags and fabric baskets for pot plants to sit in.”

Becs says she enjoys piecing which fabric matches which for each bag. “It is so much fun matching the doilies with the fabric. I have loyal repeat customers and get a real buzz from people walking away with my product or bumping into people wearing my bags. “One of my most memorable doily stories is from the Matakana Indie Market. A lady walked up to me and handed me a bundle wrapped in tissue and said, ‘these are my grandmother’s, and I know you can do something amazing with them’, and walked away before I could thank her. When I opened the parcel I found the most amazing

doilies. It took me a few months to cut them as they were so special. People have done the same with jeans and vintage curtains. It is lovely that people can help and recycle their things. “I have made friends with customers, and the market people have become my extended family. No one in my family sewed — I am self-taught. My mum really disliked sewing but was a knitter and floral artist. “I think it was my determination that got me to master the craft. I love that my creations are cheery and practical. My sewing room is definitely my happy place. I love everything about it.” ¢

p Anaiah Rangi and Megan Lawrence are helping people in the community with all types of chores

Serving the community u by Ann van Engelen

Based in Bream Bay, Megan Lawrence and Anaiah Rangi are on a mission to help people in the community with large and small projects. “We are involved with our church Volunteers in Service programme and move areas every six weeks,” says Megan. “We have been here for a couple of weeks now, and we try our best to serve others as we try to be like Jesus Christ. We do things like help people spring clean their homes, take care of lawns and can do gardening, which we really enjoy. “We were brought up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and our purpose as missionaries is to love and serve others as Christ set the example. It is nice that we can help so many people by doing whatever they need to be done around their homes.”

The ladies say giving people a break from everyday chores when they can is important. “Our team has been in the area for a couple of weeks now, and we will be here for another month. It is nice to see people we help smile. We also drop baking off for people who may be down a little.” Anaiah says one of her most memorable situations was helping an elderly widow. “Her tenants left her rental property in a terrible state, it was really tragic, and it took us a whole day to clean it. It was nice to be able to take the pressure off her, and she was really grateful,” said Anaiah.

“With our mission, girls do an 18-month service and males complete 24 months. “We save up and prepare before coming out, and our savings are allocated to us weekly to help us with our budgeting. It works well, and it keeps us on track financially. “We don’t normally know where we are going until the week of moving. After our service time is up, we are released as a missionary and go back to our normal lives. “I am a teacher aid and studying for a Bachelor of Teaching. Megan was working in a school for disabled

people and is considering studying next year. We didn’t know each other before coming here, and we have built a lovely friendship. “Our goal is to share Christ and his gospel. We try our best to be more like him and love others as he did. If someone needs help, we are willing to learn anything, including milking cows. “We are really enjoying being in the area, and we would love to get to know and help more people. We can be contacted by searching Anaiah Rangi on the Bream Bay Community Facebook page.” ¢

November 5 2021 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

An ancient delight u by Liz Clark

For more than 4,000 years, cultures across the globe have cultivated figs; more recently, they’ve been making a comeback in Kiwi gardens. Ficus carica comes from a family of more than 800 species of figs spanning subtropical and tropical zones across the planet. It’s a small deciduous tree spanning up to four metres in width and height if growth is left unchecked. Small, sweet globe-shaped fruit is produced from early spring until early winter, depending on the variety. With a broad availability of cultivars grown in nurseries, fruit colouration ranges from purple to brown varieties. Figs are generally hardy and prefer well-drained soils rich in organic matter. However, they are prone to drought conditions, so watering during the dry months is essential to ensure tree

survival. Mulch the tree well with a layer of bark or post peelings to conserve moisture. Avoid planting in heavy waterlogged soil, or it will result in rotting of the root ball and subsequent death of the tree. A large garden isn’t required to have a fig tree; they do just as well, espaliered against a wall or in a large pot. A wine barrel is an attractive choice to plant a fig into. Fill the container with high-quality potting mix and keep it well watered. The trees are rarely affected by pests and diseases and should fruit well during the growing season. Use bird netting to protect the fruit before harvest.

Fig trees can become large and unwieldy; an annual pruning during the winter to remove dead, damaged or large branches is beneficial. Shorten any long branches where needed, and keep the centre of the tree open for good air circulation. Avoid pruning during the summer. The sap can cause irritation to the skin, sometimes causing blisters and burns. The propagation of figs is during winter from cuttings 15–25cm long about the thickness of a pencil. Dip the ends of the cuttings into rooting hormone powder and place them into a free-draining soil mix. Site in a warm, humid location and keep the

soil moist, not wet, until the roots have formed. Plant the new trees out during the spring. Harvesting of fig fruit should be done when they have softened, and the skin has changed colour. Wear gloves when taking the fruit from the tree to avoid the sap; cut using secateurs. The fruit can be kept in a refrigerator for up to a week. However, it’s best to eat the fruit the same day they’ve been harvested. With more than 70 varieties of figs available in New Zealand, visit your local nursery or search online for the best options. ¢

Supporting life-saving service

u by Ann van Engelen

With the Northland Rescue Helicopter annual appeal underway, people across Northland are encouraged to support the life-saving service. To see Angus Huntington tearing up Whangārei’s hockey turf in 2021, you wouldn’t believe he was hit by a falling tree on November 4, 2019. “To know he is alive is something of a miracle,” says mum Jena. “His list of injuries included a broken femur resulting in the insertion of two pins, a broken pelvis in two places, fractures in his lumbar spine on two vertebrae, loads of abrasions, haematoma of the abdomen, and degloving of his left leg, which required skin grafts. “After he had endured that trauma and awaited ambulance assistance, he had a four-

and I phoned my Mum and Dad to come and look after our other children. “Hayley reassured me, and when the ambulance arrived, they called for the chopper. The degloving was the big wound around the top of the left leg. We assumed he had a broken leg. “I can’t be more grateful for the Northland Rescue Chopper Service. It is something I see come and go daily from where I work next door at Northland Hockey. I had never appreciated it more until we needed it to help Angus. Now, when I see it take off, I hope that person is OK because I understand the situation other families can be in.

I can’t be more grateful for the Northland Rescue Chopper Service minute Northland Rescue Helicopter mercy dash from our Maungakaramea lifestyle block to Whangārei Hospital.” Then came blood transfusions, and he was transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland by chopper with his dad Simon beside him. “Angus continued the healing process — then he was back in Whangārei Hospital for two nights before coming home. We are eternally grateful for the efforts of medical staff, the Maungakaramea Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Northland Rescue Chopper Service and my friend Hayley Moyle who is a nurse. When the accident happened I phoned Hayley, and she was here within minutes,

“Talking to other people, it is amazing how many have had to use the chopper or know someone who has. We know it is there but perhaps don’t appreciate it as much as when you use it. I don’t know how they do what they do because they are so calm and kind.” For a total of six weeks, Angus was bedridden and unable to move due to his damaged pelvis. “I don’t remember much, but it went really fast, and there were lots of people helping me. I did see all the lights in Auckland as we flew in the helicopter,” says Angus. To support the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service, go to nest.org.nz. ¢

Empty the fridge pasta salad u by Deb Wright

Easiest salad on the planet. I use whatever I have in the fridge and whatever dressing I feel like on the day. I prefer it with vegaroni (tricolour pasta) but did not have any for this photo. INGREDIENTS Cooked and drained pasta Cherry tomatoes halved Radish or red onion sliced Avocado Feta crumbled Capsicum diced Lettuce Basil or any other herb you may like Salt and pepper to taste Protein of your choice. I use chicken, salmon or whatever meat I have leftover and sliced into it

METHOD Mix it all together and you are done. I have used a store-bought oil dressing to make this one and will also use a cream dressing. I generally don’t wait for the pasta to go cold because I quite like the feta coating everything, which it does when you mix it all together when the pasta is still warm. There really are no rules for this salad, which, more often than not, is our entire meal and is just as nice the next day. It’s great for school lunch boxes too.

p Sarah Primrose is studying a diploma in Cosmetic and Formulation Science, which she intends to utilise to enhance her knowledge and credibility

Treasuring nature’s resources u by Ann van Engelen

Sarah Primrose and Scott Hoddy began their adventure of making beeswax wraps and natural skincare products three years ago after moving to a lifestyle property in Wellsford. “We bought a property on Port Albert Road. Our neighbours have beehives, and I grow herbs and botanicals,” says Sarah. “I trained in Kerikeri as a chef because I loved food and cooking growing up. I wanted to reduce plastic and waste at home and had seen beeswax wraps so I began making them, and a business was born.

our signature recipe, which are exciting for children. “It took me a year to perfect as it is about the tackiness and quantities of beeswax and oil. It all matters when making a wrap as in winter it is cold, and the wax is firmer and difficult to get it to stick to a bowl. “A wrap will last a year if not washed in hot water as the wax melts. Everything is aimed to be plastic-free and made in a sustainable way.” Sarah uses glass jars, bottles, aluminium pots and certified home compostable packaging at Primrose and Co. “I am currently completing a diploma in Cosmetic and Formulation Science, which gives me cosmetic chemist

I make unscented deodorant for people who are sensitive to essential oils “The wraps are reusable, antibacterial and antifungal. The beeswax helps preserve and extend the shelf life of food and are home compostable at the end of their life. “Our unique sandwich wrap is the bee’s knees. You build your sandwich, then fold in the sides and wrap the natural twine around the wooden button to fasten. I make DIY beeswax kits with

We then began making natural skincare products for the Mangawhai Tavern Market when it first began. “Scott designs security and CCTV systems and also helps me. I already had a formula and recipe understanding and taught myself to make skincare products. I incorporate my plants and

qualifications and credibility for my products.” Sarah’s products are natural, such as her deodorant, which is baking soda and aluminium-free. “Aluminium blocks your pores and stops you sweating, which inhibits your body doing something it does naturally. We use seed oils like organic sunflower, jojoba, avocado and rosehip. It is infused with our calendula flowers, which we grow people are allergic to baking soda, we removed it and added magnesium to help combat odour. “I make unscented deodorant for people who are sensitive to essential oils. Depending on the person, natural deodorant is one of the hardest things to transition to in natural products. For some people, it doesn’t work well, and that can be due to diet. If you have a healthy diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and are hydrated well, it generally works. “There is a stage to detox your armpit area to remove the aluminium and chemicals, and your body odour can get worse for a time, but everyone sweats differently. It is a very personal thing. “We use our neighbour’s honey in our skincare and also sell jars of it. I had worked in pastry and represented New Zealand competing in like the Olympics for Chefs. I worked as a chocolatier for friends in Matakana when they needed a chocolate maker. We now stock their

chocolate wrapped in our wraps. Once you finish the bar, you can use the wrap. “I was also the junior ambassador for Young Chefs of the World and was on Food TV around 10 years ago. Our chocolate is palm oil and soy-free, and ethically sourced and made. It is really important to us as overseas the cacao industry is known to be a slave industry, and my friends have sourced highquality, ethical ingredients. “Making the products from our own plants, herbs and botanicals while helping support the planet at the same time is important. I research everything when I come up with a new concept to offer people natural and organic ingredients. “Some skincare and bath items are luxury products and are for health and wellness and enjoying the procedure of using them. My bee bombs are natural fire starters and are made from the waste of the wraps. Each bomb burns for 15 minutes.

“I launched a Mums and Bubs range to help support pregnancy and newborn babies. There is a belly oil and nipple balm that doesn’t have beeswax, so it is safe for breastfeeding, and I don’t use nut oils in case there is a nut allergy. “We use seed oils like organic sunflower, jojoba, avocado and rosehip. It is infused with our calendula flowers, which we grow. It helps soothe irritation and is very gentle and calming. The oral care is a mineral powder that doesn’t have any foaming agent in it. The activated charcoal helps whiten teeth and can be used as a mouthwash. One jar removes three plastic toothpaste tubes. “The oil pulling solution is an ancient technique, which involves swirling coconut oil and essential oil every morning on an empty stomach. It helps with things like eczema and headaches by drawing toxins for the body. The longer you pull, the better the benefits. You spit it out as it draws the toxins out of your body.

“We opened an online store, and when we are not in lockdown, we are at markets like Mangawhai Tavern Market, shows and expos. We sell wholesale as well, and one of our biggest customers is in Japan. “I love the connection I have with the earth through growing everything and tending the gardens. My favourite time is spring and summer as you are harvesting and drying plants and herbs. “We recently completed a purposebuilt work studio and hope to employ someone to do the packaging and labelling soon. I enjoy coming up with an idea, researching, creating, testing and finding it works. Friends and family test the products for me, and I tweak it, if need be. “I love the benefits each and every drop of body-loving nectar Earth Mother gives us in my products. It makes it extra special as we believe in having healthy skin and looking after it as ageing is beautiful.” ¢

I personally don’t think that’s true, just as I don’t think that those who hold the opinion that vaccination is not right for them are any more controlled than I am. I do think that those that have taken an extreme stance talking of conspiracy, mind control or population control are indoctrinated. How does this help the cause of reasoned debate? I would suggest that most people will do the opposite of what the extremists want. I was shown a letter received by the editor of the Lifestyler telling them that they have blood on their hands and will face justice simply for reporting the news of the week. Again, not helpful to the cause at all. Why do you think it’s OK to try to intimidate? You accuse the media of control or being controlled. I ask, is the

commentary coming from certain antivax sources not trying to control as well? As a member of society, we are controlled by laws every day. Without control, life would be a very different thing. Lawlessness would prevail, and I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t want to live in the wild west. Fear and intimidation are the worst types of control. At the moment, that seems to be how Covid is being handled by the more extreme, for both sides of the argument. There are not that many times I agree with any government, but I do agree with the prime minister on one thing, that we need to be kind to each other — no matter what we believe in. We are all in the same situation. Just living our normal lives is hard enough without getting caught up in everything else. ¢
