p Colin and Anne Coutts, along with other committee members of the Bream Bay Arts Group, have focussed on establishing a place for people interested in art to join together

“We have always dabbled in art. When we moved here, we discovered there were a lot of artists working from home,“ says Colin. “It seemed like a good idea to gather them together and hold an exhibition showcasing the different genres of talent. We hosted our first event at the local yacht club on the anniversary weekend. It was very successful with 700 people visiting in two days. “Everyone was happy and sold work, so we decided to do it again and bigger. We approached Hopper Developments at Marsden Cove, and they gifted us the use of their gazebo for our next exhibition. “We formed a committee and set about fundraising and contacting emerging

notes with others. At present, we have 63 members, and we are planning our fifth exhibition for our next anniversary weekend in January with 44 artists contributing so far.” The Bream Bay Combined Arts meet on Tuesday from 10am–2pm with a mixture of oil and acrylic painting, pastels and various activities such as pottery. “There are several accomplished painters in the group, such as Maree Gutry, who helps people starting off on their artistic journey. In the future, we will be offering tutorials. “On Wednesdays from 10am–2pm Anne and I host felting, spinning, needle felting and weaving. We hold another

We had 35 artists at the next show with 2,000 people visiting in two days and $20,000 of sales.” The next year saw 3,000 attendees with $35,000 of art sold. “Our last show was two years ago due to Covid. I then suggested that we find a home for art in Bream Bay. After many knock-backs a guy offered some land and moved a building on-site for us to use. That gesture was very encouraging for us. We were also donated a kiln that we have installed and are very thankful for. “We spent 18 months renovating the building, and in April 2020, we opened the facility. People want to be here, and it is nice to see people helping each other. We are seeing some fantastic work as a result. “Once you become a member, you can swap around the various groups and try something different. Vaccine best hope against Covid u by Andy Bryenton

This week may see a watershed moment in the vaccination roll-out for Covid-19 passed; half of all Kiwis will have been fully vaccinated. However, Northland is in the spotlight with possible cross-border cases and low rates of vaccine uptake. Following the revelation that an individual had breached the border and tested positive, vaccine rates remained low across the east coast. Extra clinics operated this week at venues such as Kaiwaka’s Three Furlongs, the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall and the Waipū Rugby Club. At the start of the week, of 66 regions in New Zealand, Kaipara ranked 60th, Whangarei 28th and Auckland 10th for vaccination uptake. “Those people hardest to reach by the vaccine are going to be easiest for the virus to reach. These are people who are living in crowded situations, often in poor health, often Covid-deniers, they are suspicious of authority. So they don’t believe people like me even though I don’t work for the government,” said University of Auckland epidemiologist Rod Jackson. He spoke on national radio during a weekend of uncertainty for Northlanders. The figures come down to a combination of geographic isolation, mistrust of the vaccine, people with underlying medical conditions they believe may cause harmful interactions and side effects. There’s also a level of fear stirred up by falsified anti-vaccine stories circulated by social media and so-called alt-right pundits, mainly from the United States and broadcast online. “Recent scientific modelling gives us a grim outline of how things might look with various vaccination coverage

levels in our population,” says Jeanette Wedding, the Senior Responsible Officer for the Northland Covid-19 vaccine roll-out, via Northland’s District Health Board. “If 70% of Northland’s population were vaccinated, 60,000 to 80,000 Northlanders would become infected with Covid-19 over two years. “Hospitalisations would peak at 200, putting considerable strain on our health system. The wait for Northlanders to access healthcare such as hip replacements, cataract surgeries

and some cancer treatments would be prolonged. “In addition, we’d lose over 100 of us to the virus, likely our most at-risk Northlanders who are older or have underlying health conditions. At 90%, there would still be an impact that we must carefully manage, with the number of people affected significantly reduced. “Around 4,000 Northlanders would be infected with Covid-19, two people at any one time would be hospitalised, and approximately 10 people would lose their lives to the virus.” ¢

Many of the common problems can be treated with simple minor procedures done either at the clinic or at Kensington Hospital. The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

Gill Curtis moved to Ruakākā from Whangārei eight years ago with her husband Dave and is now well-known in the area for her raw food creations.

“Our son and his family had been living here for some time, so it made sense for us to move closer to them,” says Gill. “I have always liked baking and love challenges. Around 15 years ago, we started on a health journey as I am intolerant to dairy products and gluten, so I removed them and refined sugar from my diet. “I then found it frustrating when we visited cafes as most food choices included the ingredients I can’t tolerate. If it wasn’t a sweet, it was laden with cheese or butter.” Gill discovered raw cakes and decided she could attempt to make them. “I would make things for family functions and kept getting rave reviews and orders by word of mouth. Dave being a builder, then made me a work kitchen, and my daughter-in-law then created my RawCreationsNZ Facebook page. “We made sample boxes for people to purchase and then attended a market. My business has grown from there and since the lockdown disruptions my orders through Facebook grew. People new to raw food are enjoying the products. “Raw cakes are mainly nut-based using coconut, dates and almonds for the base. To get the centre creaminess, I use cashew nuts. My nuts are activated before I use them, meaning they are soaked, drained and rinsed before I whip them up. “I use organic or spray-free ingredients whenever possible as that

is a big part of our health and better for the environment. I also make my own chocolate. I aim for healthy, nutritious and delicious and consider nutritional benefits and use things such as maple syrup, and turmeric and spirulina for the colour. “People with nut allergies need to be aware they are made with nuts. Our house is basically glutenfree, and no gluten is used in the work kitchen. “My tiramisu slice and raw carrot cake are really popular and my grandchildren love my caramel slice, it is a different texture to the others. Creating celebration cakes for birthdays and special events are special to make. “You only need a small slice of raw creations as they are protein and can be quite filling. They are gluten, dairy, refined sugar-free and vegan friendly. They need to be kept refrigerated and freeze really well. “I did my first monthly Roving Market last week, and that will now be the market I attend. We go to different locations, which is a lot of fun. “People trying raw baking for the first time are often pleasantly surprised and become regulars. We have certainly filled a need for a lot of people. “Learning to make raw cakes and slices was a big learning curve as I am not a chef. I am simply a mother and grandmother who enjoys making healthy food. I like the satisfaction of knowing I am helping people to have treats they enjoy.” ¢

p Siobhan Henderson is in her eighth year of providing locals with the opportunity to exercise through her Kaiwaka boot camp programme

Motivation through fitness u by Ann van Engelen

Siobhan Henderson grew up in Kaiwaka and has now provided boot camp fitness classes to the community for seven years. “I was living in Australia and got involved in personal training,” says Siobhan. “When we returned to Kaiwaka, I saw a need for a group session to help people in the community with their fitness. Two friends and I started with a biggest loser challenge, and we grew from there. “I then carried on a more casual style boot camp and started supporting charities as well. I have donated to the local fire brigade, church youth group and other local groups with the proceeds of a session over the years. It is one way we can help them. “The Kaiwaka Four Square approached me this year to come on board as a community sponsor. They are offering a free weekly boot camp session every Wednesday at 6.30pm starting October 27 — lockdowns permitting. Anyone can come along, all

ages and at any stage of fitness. I am so proud of the Four Square owners for this great initiative to help the locals. It is something they did when they lived in the Bay of Plenty and found a positive way to help people be able to join in who may not have been able to otherwise.”

and something to look forward to each year. “We have some people who have come along since the beginning, and they often help newcomers get started. It is a time for mums who are at home with children to have a break and do

Boot camps are an opportunity to come and exercise Siobhan’s other sessions start Tuesday, October 26 with HIIT/Strength and Thursday, October 28, at 6.30pm for Boxfit classes. These two sessions are $10 each. “The exercise sessions are exciting for our group. We don’t run all-year round, and start after Labour weekend every year to prevent things from getting boring. It gives people a break

something for themselves once or twice a week. Boot camps are an opportunity to come and exercise, as you form friendships with people you may not have met yet. Even if you miss a few sessions, you can slot right back into where you left off. “Exercise helps you to gain strength and be healthier through joining in. Some people see positive results

just from attending and being able to start exercising. I have seen incredible weight loss and increased mobility with individuals who used to get aches and pains before they started coming along. “People don’t need to be scared of boot camp. Once they attend for the first time, they realise it isn’t as difficult as they thought. We are a friendly group who support each other no matter how long you have been coming. At present, I am studying for a degree at Massey University with the aim to work in mental health and addictions. When I am qualified, I hope to incorporate health and fitness into my work to help the community in my next chapter of work. “I would love people to come and join our awesome, supportive team and have fun with us. For further information and updates, join the Kaiwaka Boot Camp Facebook group.” ¢

Life in the soil u by Liz Clark

The sudden shock of finding an unpleasant alien lifeform sitting in the garden is never a wonderful experience, especially when the intruder is an unknown. Time and time again, posts will appear in the various New Zealand gardening groups on social media about fungi appearing in the garden. Some are attractive species, while others are unpleasant in smell and appearance. However, regardless of appearance or odour, fungi have an essential role in the cycle of life. As with many species of insects, fungi play an essential role in the decomposition process, breaking down organic matter into nutrients vital for healthy plant growth. These organisms feed on decomposing material through a network of connected thread-like tubes called mycelium. Quite often, these can be found in bark mulch as white lattice-like structures hard at work, breaking it all down for plants to utilise. It’s nature at work in the garden indicating healthy soil full of life right down to the microscopic level. New Zealand has an estimated 22,000 species of fungi, with around 7,500 identified to date. Several species appear in gardens from time to time, usually after rain and warm temperatures. Some have an unpleasant odour and strange appearance. It’s the case for members of the Stinkhorn family, commonly found in gardens, especially on bark and mulch.

Stinkhorns are decomposers, feeding on dead wood and other garden detritus, breaking it down into components that are put back into the soil and reused again by plants. One of the most common is the anemone stinkhorn or Aseroe rubra. It resembles a starfish shape with several tentacle-like structures that give it an almost alien-like appearance. This fungus is easily identified by its brownish-red colouring and its offensive odour. Its top is covered with dark olivebrown slime or gleba, which smells of rotting meat. The odour attracts flies used to transport the fungi spores to other locations. Its close cousin, the basket fungus, also uses a similar attractant to spread spores. Neither species is toxic to animals or humans. If removal is required, it’s best to cut the base of the stinkhorn while it’s still at the juvenile growth stage. Otherwise, if you can put up with the smell, leave it to grow and, in turn, it will significantly benefit the soil biology and your plants. A word of caution when dealing with fungi that some might say is edible. Always check the species first on the Fungal Network of New Zealand website funnz.org.nz. ¢

The felines’ beautician u by Ann van Engelen

Fay Martin returned from Australia last year to be closer to family, and based at Mangawhai, has established Precious Paws mobile cat grooming. “I was in Australia for 11 years and lived on a small farm in McKay, North Queensland,” says Fay. “I have always worked as a cat rescue volunteer. I worked alongside the RSPCA for many years and am currently completing a veterinary assistant online course as well. “In McKay, I had a horse, ducks, chickens, geese, cats and dogs and had to put up with snakes, spiders, wild dogs and goannas. One goanna was over two metres long. They are a wild animal, similar to a dinosaur, and you don’t mess with them. “You had to ensure the animals were locked away each night, and we always had to beat the goannas to the chicken eggs. Even the spiders and snakes were scary, but you got more used to them. “Living in Mangawhai now is a dream. I can go for a bike ride or walk with no shoes on now and not worry. I have

been grooming cats for five years. When I returned to New Zealand, my brother suggested I start a business at their shop in Whangaparāoa. “I came up with cat grooming and called it Precious Paws because I knew there was a need, and I enjoy teaching

Once a cat’s stress level is up, you can’t bring it down

people correct cat care. Grooming felines exclusively means they don’t smell dogs, and that helps keep them relaxed. “Owners generally love their animals — they become part of their family. It is also difficult to maintain a long-haired cat such as the Maine Coon, Ragdolls

and Persian. At times, they don’t realise they need to keep their hair short. “They often brush the top, not realising the fur tangles on their chest, stomach and underarms. This restricts their movement and is painful. Sometimes, they miss a grooming for various reasons and end up severely matted because matting happens very quickly once it takes hold. “People don’t mean for their cats to get matted, and it is quite upsetting when they realise, but it’s not always their fault. Fleas can also infest the matts, and the owners get stressed as they can’t deal with it. “It can take me two and a half hours to carefully shave the matt away from the skin. I think it is better not to take them to the vet to be groomed unless absolutely necessary as they are sedated for their safety. It is safer for animals not to be sedated.

p Fay has been involved with rescuing and caring for cats since she was young and is currently completing a veterinary assistant course

p Fay Martin moved to Mangawhai to be closer to family after living in Australia for 11 years

I have worked with cats my whole life and love and understand them. When their groom is complete, I give them a treat, so I can check their stress level and know they are relaxed

“If it is too tight and pulling on the skin, it is painful for the cat, so then I would recommend a vet. Once it is sorted, we can do a maintenance programme to keep the hair under control. “I have domestic short-hair breeds myself and wash them to help with moulting. This stops them licking so much, which helps eliminate hairballs and coughing. I trim their nails too, which is especially helpful for inside cats as they can’t scratch on trees to blunt their claws, and that is why they scratch furniture.” Fay says it is also important to check their ears and keep their eyes clean, especially breeds prone to eye staining. “When grooming, I check for skin problems and other issues that you wouldn’t notice at home. Once a cat had a tick in its mouth, and the owner didn’t realise.

“That is what I love about my job, helping the animals and the owners. It is also about understanding that cats have individual personalities. It is important to do things with as little stress as possible. “Once a cat’s stress level is up, you can’t bring it down, so I give it a break and return later. Older cats can get a little bit grumpy. Cats are a whole different ball game to dogs. You have to take your own safety into account. To me, it is a real personal thing to take good care of the animal, and I am always aware of the owner’s stress. “I normally trim their nails before I groom and can tell if a cat gets stressed to the point that you are not going to defuse the situation. They actually love being groomed — they are so much happier later. “In summer, we do belly shaves to keep them cooler as some breeds like

the Norwegian Forest cat have a double coat. That means it is extra thick as they originate from the snowy areas.” Fay says diet is also important, especially for older cats and kittens. “They all need a good immune system, and kittens need a good diet to grow their bodies. Anything vet recommended is good, but affordability is important too. I feed my cats half a sachet of Royal Canin wet food a day. They also like cooked chicken and cat biscuits. “As long as the cat likes their diet, leave them on it. If you find your cat isn’t putting enough weight on or losing hair, you need to look at the food. If you are changing the diet, wean and transition them to the new food to avoid a stomach upset. “You can get food for dental care and sensitive tummies as well as little toothbrushes that fit on your finger. I always check mouths while I am

grooming as people don’t realise their cat may have dental issues, and that can affect their whole health. Just like us, if their teeth aren’t great, they will have pain. ”I also do a sanitary trim on their behind to avoid poop sticking to its bottom. Long grasses can be a problem at times, and I complete flea and worm treatments for people who need help, especially as older cats can be an issue. “I have worked with cats my whole life and love and understand them. When their groom is complete, I give them a treat, so I can check their stress level and know they are relaxed. “Living in Mangawhai is beautiful. I love living away from the hustle and bustle of the city and being able to offer my mobile grooming service to the community. It is the best job in the world to me.” ¢

A quilter’s paradise u by Ann van Engelen

Lynne King has been quilting for 21 years, creating works of art through her sewing skills. “I grew up in Kaipara. My dad was an engineer at the Dargaville Hospital, and my grandfather was a tailor,” says Lynne. “My grandmother and mother were both tailoresses, and things rolled from there for me. They taught me to sew all my own clothes, and from then I always made my own clothes and other items. “I took clothing and fabric design at high school and became a textiles

All three layers are stitched together. “The three layers are what make the quilting. It is completed by placing binding the edges, so the quilt doesn’t look untidy. “We do everything from king size to children’s cot quilts or wall hangings. The most memorable quilt I have made called The Wilds still keeps spinning my wheels every time I look at it. I

Creating a quilt by hand can take months of work and clothing teacher. In 1990 I met a lady who did patchwork, and I took it up as a point of interest and haven’t looked back. “I enjoy being able to use the application and techniques of sewing that I have practised all my life with the designing for quilt making. “We sketch, draw and refine ideas for a pattern before cutting it out and placing it on the fabric. You then stitch it to a background fabric when your design is ready and placed on a batting.”

took facets of the wild, like the forest, seasides, sunsets and fungus. “It is a snapshot of nature, and I had so much enjoyment doing it. Quilting excites me. I love the colour of the fabrics and the textures that you can make. Making things with my hands is exhilarating, and seeing the finished project is very rewarding. “The craft is something you can share with friends and family. I have made my grandchildren and great-grandchildren their own quilts. The beauty is

they can be passed down to future generations. “Anyone can learn to quilt, even if you are not a great sewer. There is a lot of satisfaction in making something from beginning to end. There are clubs around the area that you can join and do stitching together every week. “You make good friends and hear wonderful stories. You all have the same interest, and those more experienced help the newcomers. It becomes a real family sharing thing. I have done a lot of marbling and printing

on fabric as well as flower pounding. I have spent a lot of time using water coloured pencils to create designs on fabric too. “Creating a quilt by hand can take months of work. Most are done by machine to save time. It is about the joy that we get from sewing rather than the monetary value. “I encourage others who want to try something new to get out there and start stitching. It is a great occupation during lockdown that keeps you busy, and the end result is always rewarding.” ¢

Afghan Slice

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER October 15 2021

u by Jessica Keesing

Now, there’s nothing new, and out the gate with this one, just a tried and true family favourite turned into a slice. However, boy, it is good. Adding walnuts just tops it off. I’m also a little extra and prefer to use melted chocolate rather than using chocolate icing, but that’s just a personal preference at the end of the day. Go on dip into one of the favourites and give this recipe a try. INGREDIENTS 200g softened butter ½ cup sugar 1¼ cup plain flour ¼ cocoa 1½ cups of cornflakes 1 block dairy milk chocolate

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a 20cm x 30cm sponge roll tin with baking paper. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluff. Sift in flour and cocoa, then stir into the creamed mixture. Fold in cornflakes until combined. Press into the baking tin and bake for 25 minutes or until set. Allow to cool before icing with normal chocolate icing or by melting the block of chocolate and spreading it over the slice. Drop some walnuts on top and enjoy the simple delights that are the Afghan slice!

A diary of kindness u by Ann van Engelen

Simon and Megan Bennett of Cleanz in Mangawhai started The Kindness Diary Facebook page to recognise people who bring a smile alongside consistent friendliness to others. “We want to acknowledge people in our community whose selfless actions and kindness have a constant uplifting impact upon us,” says Megan. “Most often, these members of our community are unseen in the things they do and aren't even aware of how their actions encourage others. We intend to acknowledge someone who would fit a simple criteria every two weeks. “The criteria looks something like this. The person does good for no personal reward. They consistently impact other people or the community in a positive way and might normally not be acknowledged. They also often have no idea of the positive impact they make on the people around them. “The page is supported by our product Cleanz Concentrate. This was developed over the last three years and launched in January. We felt that we had the opportunity to use Cleanz as a small token to bring a little happiness to our community at a time when we really could do with a bit.

Delivering personalised goodbyes for over 70 years. Thank you Northland, for the trust you place in us.

“Yes, it is a cleaning product. We figured that everyone needs to clean, and if you are going to clean, you might as well clean with a non-toxic natural product that is damn good. It is a natural fit.” “The first recipient of the Kindness Diary was Edita for the Four Square at the Heads. It was apparent by the comments on the Facebook page that she is well-loved and appreciated by all. “People say her smile is infectious, and she always has a kind word. She had no idea how much impact she made and was very surprised to be nominated. “This week, our recipient is Judy Langmuir. She has been the head librarian for 17 years at our local library, which is run by volunteers. Her love of books and interest in current affairs means she will go the extra mile to source any book that is requested. “Judy gets the most pleasure out of watching children discover the world of books, and she is virtually always available to her band of library volunteers. Our library receives grants from the Kaipara District Council resulting in Judy being able to purchase approximately 500 new books a year.

“She spends time at home covering and cataloguing them all before finally delivering them ready to be put on the shelves. Without Judy, we doubt there would be a community library. “So, that is about it, really. The Kindness Diary is a win-win. It acknowledges those who are doing kind things that are mostly overlooked. We

think it can tend to make us all more aware of the good people who are good every day and not just when it suits. “For our new brand, it brings a little brand awareness. If no one loses, everyone wins. We are looking for people in the community who are nice and always have a smile for you. Send your nominations to info@cleanz.co.nz.” ¢
