Moving to Maungaturoto was a new start for Richard and Diana Moore who were looking for a town to call home some 14 years ago. The couple has since planted their roots deeply and become stewards of the community. They have helped establish the various community gardens and the art world in the area, through their passion for seeing the township succeed. continued on page 10 …

Long Term Plan 2021-2031 This month we’ll be at a few markets around Kaipara starting some conversations about our Long Term Plan 2021 – 2031. You’ll have a chance to talk to our elected members about where Kaipara is heading in the next 10 years. We’ll be at the: • Paparoa Market, Saturday 17 October 2020 from 9am • Mangawhai Town & Country Market, Sunday 24 October 2020, from 9am There is also a survey to get your ideas and feedback, check kaipara.govt.nz/haveyoursay for more information.
p Get up close with gigantic artworks such as this sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist Anish Kapoor, as Alzheimer’s Northland welcomes guests to Gibbs Farm
Well known for his entrepreneurial engineering exploits in amphibious vehicles, landowner and patron of the arts Alan Gibbs has commissioned a large number of works on his Kaipara property, many on a cyclopean scale. After 20 years of creative input, Gibbs Farm includes major works by Graham Bennett, Chris Booth, Daniel Buren, Bill Culbert, Neil Dawson, Marijke de Goey, Andy Goldsworthy, Ralph Hotere, Anish Kapoor, Sol LeWitt, Len Lye, Russell Moses, Peter Nicholls, Eric Orr, Tony Oursler, George Rickey, Peter Roche, Richard Serra, Kenneth Snelson, Richard Thompson, Leon van den Eijkel and Zhan Wang. Now, the creator of the Aquada and Quadski amphibious vehicles is opening his collection to the public, in a fundraising push for the notfor-profit group helping to care for Northlanders affected by Alzheimer’s. During the better part of the year, this trove of giant and evocative sculptures is closed to guests, who can apply to visit by special appointment only. Alzheimer’s Northland spokespeople confirm that the charitable organisation
“
is very pleased to offer this insight into art on a giant scale, in harmony with the landscape. “Join us for an unforgettable day at Gibbs Farm to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Northland,” they say. “The park boasts a series of major site-specific commissions. It is the greatest collection of large-scale outdoor sculptures in the country with works by some of the world’s most renowned artists. You will roam among the sculptures and come face-toface with some truly exotic animals.” While the open day itself is not until December 4, the limited number of people who will be permitted entry to what is in effect an open air art gallery means that tickets will deplete quickly. Locals who have caught a glimpse of Mr Gibbs’ collection as they travel State Highway 16 are encouraged to take this opportunity to walk among the otherworldly works of imagination he’s commissioned and gain a new perspective on the harbour and the land. Highway options and opinions u by Andy Bryenton
State Highway One is getting a major upgrade, and citizens of the Kaipara, especially those who often traverse the stretch from the Brynderwyns to Whangarei, are being asked for their input as ‘core customers’. “The SH1 Whangarei to Port Marsden Highway project is an upgraded 22km four-lane corridor that will improve transport connections between Auckland and Whangarei,” say spokespeople from Waka Kotahi, the New Zealand Transport Agency. “It is part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme’s $6.8 billion investment to save lives, get our regions moving and boost productivity.” With part of the proposed road comprising an infamous stretch noted for its many fatal crashes, and the entire project improving access to Northport for potential future expansions of operations there, it’s important that authorities get it right. Hence the desire for those who use the highway most often to have their say. Those who live in Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto and Paparoa will be high-volume users of the finished fourlane highway. The two options, which have been tabled for public consultation include
upgrading the current state highway to four lanes, with some sections built offline to straighten out curves, or upgrading the existing state highway to four lanes, with a section built to the west of SH1, avoiding the coastal marine environment at Oakleigh. The total cost of either plan is budgeted to within $692 million and will incorporate pedestrian and cycle access as well as improved vehicular throughput. This will be a nontolled road. There’s still another week left during which residents can check out the two competing plans online. They can have their say on which is best and how they could be further improved to best fit their purpose. Construction is set to begin in 2023 with a completion date of early 2028 at the latest. p The bright green and white livery of Real Town Pies adorns not just their bakery, but now a mobile truck as well, which serves Mangawhai
Baked in goodness u by Andy Bryenton
When the owner and chief baker of Maungaturoto’s Real Town Pies treated herself to a bright red Holden Commodore, one of those little life goals, the personalised number plate she chose was a nod to her local reputation. PIELDY, pie lady, is proudly bolted to the front of the big V8, because as Corina herself agrees, her calling is to make people happy with pies. “We make 400 pies a day here, of which just under half go out on the [Mangawhai sales] truck and the rest are sold over the counter,” she says. “Every single one is made by hand because that’s the only real secret recipe. We make them all with love and care, and we’d never make a pie that we wouldn’t want to eat. “It’s not a trick or a secret, really,” she says. “It’s just doing it the oldfashioned way. We go through 20 kilograms of steak a day, for example, so you’ll never find a pie that’s short on proper fillings. It’s sourced across the road from the local butchery.” The method, which involves laying out pastry across 400 individual moulds, hand pressing and cutting it with a wooden roller, then hand-applying exactly the right amount of fillings, may seem time-consuming. However, for this self-taught master, it’s the only way. A lifetime spent in the hospitality industry has taught Corina that flavour is everything, and attention to detail is how to achieve it. The method works, though, as Corina admits with a smile: “By Friday I’m a bit pied-out!” Tray after tray receives a splash of special glaze before entering the oven to puff and rise. It’s a testament to Corina’s skill that there are no splits, no leaks, no mistakes in this batch. Judges at New Zealand Bakels Supreme Pie Awards have been convinced, just like a small army of daily customers. Real Town Pies has twice finished in the top 10 pies in the nation in the very highly-contested cafe and boutique category. To enter against the ‘big boys’ with their automated production lines
“
would mean investing in equipment and premises that might subvert the old-school method. However, Corina states, unequivocally, that she’d ‘clean up’ in a pie v pie showdown with the top names in the nation’s pie warmers. She’s got plans to upset the competition with a winning sausage roll when the nation’s best examples of those are put to the test later this year. “Modesty is all fine and good. However, the older you get, the more you realise it’s good to be proud of what you do well,” she says. Not boastfully, but with the quiet confidence of someone who is literally fitting actions to words as we speak. Corina travelled extensively before resettling in the town where her parents lived. Baking and cooking in places as different as Arrowtown and Alice Springs, Australia before opening a delicatessen in the north of Auckland in 1989. From there it was a move to a roast shop in Maungaturoto, then, thirteen years ago, into the world of baking pies. She’s never had a formal teacher or attended a baking course but is self-taught. Would Corina ever go commercial? That’s a firm but friendly ‘no’. “It’s not the same when you have big machines, and every one’s not made by hand,” she says. “We could get more ovens and hire more staff, but I’d worry that it wouldn’t be the same.” So for now, it’s all hands on deck at 4am, ovens hot, pots of delicious fillings bubbling on the stove and rolls of pastry waiting to be cut. By 4pm in the afternoon, all those ingredients will have been turned into cash in the register, crumbs, and smiles from happy customers. This ‘real town baker’ wouldn’t have it any other way. ¢

u by Ann van Engelen
A group of community volunteers called Trackies, have been ensuring the Mangawhai Walking Tracks are kept in the best possible condition. “We have been working on the tracks bordering the Brynderwyn ranges for the best part of six years. “We are proud that people can enjoy the nature walks,” says volunteer Terry Ballard. “Various tracks were created to meet walking weekend dates. They have grown in popularity so we are altering them to be more family friendly with steps not so steep. Paths are getting gravel to make them less mud prone. “There are more than 12 kilometres of track and you can spend all day there. Parts between the first and second waterfalls are very picturesque. The main loop takes four hours with subsets taking one to three hours to complete. We typically get up to 7,000 people a year including repeat walkers.”
“
Grandparents often take grandchildren to enjoy the experience. The entrance to the Tanakaha Walking Track complex is at 302B King Road. “The volunteer Trackies do the maintenance and construction and there are 140 types of trees, grasses and plants. The botanical walk took 18 months to build with labelled trees. We have tui, wood pigeon and fantail in the area and we regularly trap for rodents. “The local women’s institute disbanded last year and made a very generous donation for park benches. There are now three benches erected. One is at Neil’s Knob halfway up to the first waterfall. Neil used to complain about the difficulty of getting up there. It also has a bus stop sign and a beautiful outlook. Another bench has a view of

p People of all ages are able to participate in the walks, with benches at three spots for resting
the second waterfall and the last is by a swimming area where children often play at the stream supervised by their carers. “There is a lot of history with evidence of the bullock trail from 150 years ago. They took supplies into the forestry on bullocks, and the groove in the ground goes for about 10 metres where they walked one foot behind the other. Further up is the remnants of a kauri dam for the logging. There are a really high kahikatea tree and unusual shaped trees including puriri that are
a couple of thousand years old. We are always welcoming volunteers. The Trackies are very interesting. One is a physicist, another ran a bouncy castle, one was the captain of a naval ship, another is an international sheep shearer and one is an expert on clover grass. People of all ages can help and do what they can. “There is no pressure or judgement. We couldn’t do it without them. We meet up at the Information Centre on Molesworth Drive every Friday at 8.30am weather dependent.” ¢

A taste of wind and sun u by Liz Clark
Around the Kaipara, gardeners are now looking towards Christmas and the sweet taste of fresh steaming corn on the cob complete with a knob of butter. Add to that the wonderful aubergine, or eggplant as it is better known, to join the summer menu alongside that tasty corn straight from out of the garden. Of course, it takes the seeds to grow both, some good soil, organic matter and plenty of water. Beginning with corn, seeds are best direct sown in blocks rather than in rows. Fresh seed should always be used to ensure successful germination. Seedlings should be protected from slugs and snails using a non-toxic bait or removed by hand. Corn is a nutrient-hungry plant. Gathering up manure from around your neighbour’s farm or using pre-prepared sheep pellets will enhance the plant’s growth and health. Mulching will also help with moisture retention in the soil during the summer growth period. Most corn cultivars grow to a height of 1.2m to 2m. Corn plants are windpollinated; the cobs will form once pollination has occurred. Your corn will be ready for harvesting once the silks wither and turn brown. Inside should be a plump, moist cob of corn ready to eat. Varieties to try out are Florida Supersweet, Glass Gem, Honey and Pearl, Hopi Blue, Cherokee and Country Gentleman. To enhance your corn as part of a meal, add a dash of chilli powder sparingly with the butter and enjoy.
Kaipara’s long, hot summers are the ideal conditions for growing eggplant. Grown widely in the Mediterranean, these versatile plants are a main staple in the region. More often than not, when buying eggplants from the local supermarket the question arises: ‘what do I do with this?’ Eggplants can be grilled, roasted or steamed and that’s just for starters. First of all start with planting your seeds into punnets or small pots with a good-quality seed raising mix and water well. Once large enough to transplant into the garden, as with your corn, provide plenty of nutrients for your plants to thrive. Good soil means robust, healthy and vigorous plants that will crop well throughout the summer. Take the usual precautions against slug and snail attacks as above. Eggplants come in a range of colours and shapes from dark purple to creamy white, lavender to pink and green varieties. You can find the available range of cultivars online. For a quick addition to a meal, slice two eggplants into quarters lengthways. Place on foil and rub in a quarter of a cup of olive oil and a tablespoon of curry powder. Roast for 25 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius. Serve on a platter and top with feta, sliced cherry tomatoes and fresh basil leaves. ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER October 16 2020
PRIDE IN OUR BUSINESS This year, perhaps more than ever in recent memory, businesses have a lot to be proud of. Those who helm our local enterprises, from the largest productive farms to the smallest one-tradie-in-a-van operations, can look back on a disruptive and challenging 2020 with the satisfaction of having powered through. Business is buoyant in many areas of the local economy right now, with even the hard-hit tourism sector bracing for a bumper summer, as Kiwi holidaymakers look north for sunshine and adventure. But to get here, business operators have had to display ingenuity, grit and no small amount of determination. While some large multinationals have foundered and lost staff, courting controversy with their response to Covid, small to medium businesses, agribusinesses and sole trader operations here in the Kaipara have, in many cases, taken on more staff, retrenched with new technology and doubled down with extra training. It’s an attitude that’s infectious, the flipside to the dour doomsaying which can swamp an economy with negativity. During the dark night of the lockdown, (when uncertainty reigned, and we were yet to discover that the measures taken by our government would prove the best defence against Coronavirus in the world), wage subsidies and other concessions saw many entrepreneurs through. Others found help hard to access, but stuck to their posts and
weathered the storm. It was an unprecedented challenge, and looking at the chaos which still eclipses economic resurgence in many foreign nations, we could have fared much worse; in terms of both mortality and finance. All businesses who persevered in the face of this threat deserve our applause and our patronage. It’s strange to report, but a current issue facing many businesses is the issue of supply chains; demand is high across the retail, trades and automotive sectors, but other nations face challenges supplying us with what our public demand. That confidence starts with businesses, and especially local ones; we’ll see the stock come in soon, but creating demand is another thing business owners can be proud of. Here at Integrity Community Media, we’ve taken the approach that crisis equals opportunity for the bold. Most of the businesses on these pages have done so too, and come through stronger. The paper you’re reading now is our brand new weekender, a development which we have been keen to roll out for some time. 2020’s disruption provided the perfect window of opportunity. To all our local businesses; a big ‘congratulations’ for your tenacity, vision and spirit. This year, you’ve got a lot to be proud of. Next year, we’re certain you’ll give us all even more reasons to share that pride.

For Dan and his team it comes down to attention to detail, the time-honoured craft of the master butcher, and an appreciation of what their customers want to create with the fine meats they provide.

p Richard and Diana Moore have spent the last 13 years creating a subtropical garden around their house
An artistic landscape u by Ann van Engelen
Artists and gardeners Richard and Diana Moore chose Maungaturoto to become home 14 years ago. The couple saw the positive potential in the township and selected it as a place to settle and build their future. “We were wanting to move from Kerikeri and literally chose our house while sitting in our car looking at it from the outside. We called the agent and purchased the property without seeing the inside,” says Diana. “Richard is an amazing man. He is an extremely talented artist and gardener. Everything we have in the garden he has built from scratch. When it comes to art, he is exceptional and can paint, draw and sculpt anything he puts his hand to.” Richard and Diana teach art and have formulated their own easy-tolearn style. “Teaching art is so rewarding. We teach people the process we have developed over 23 years. We often get older people who always wanted
to be an artist. At school, a teacher may have told them not to bother, or someone has insulted their efforts and discouraged them. They have regrets, and we love seeing their self-esteem change overnight. “With some guidance, they learn to draw very quickly like a professional. One local student came for a term

and put an entry into the Kaipara Art Awards and won the emerging artist and people’s choice award. She did the most beautiful portrait of her daughter with lovely kawakawa leaves in her hair. It had real depth and meaning. We teach in Maungaturoto and Auckland.
We are building an art gallery on the property. Once completed it will be open alongside the gardens on weekends. It will give people 12 years and older two things to look at on one site. “We will be marketing toward artists and gardening clubs as well to bring people into Kaipara. At present, we are working in collaboration with the Kauri Museum and Wharepuke Organics with a package deal. People will be able to experience our gallery and garden, The Kauri Museum and Kenny Finlayson’s and Terry Donaldson’s organic farm. “We are helping to promote each other to encourage people to the area. We believe, as long as people spend money locally and support our communities, we will keep going, and New Zealanders will be fine. “When the gallery opens, we will hold an exhibition with Richard and my artworks. also artists, so we will easily fill the space, and we hope to have some of our friend Rudy’s, copper work and sculptures on display.” Diana has been unwell battling cancer but is determined to enjoy the property and get her message out there. “Hopefully, our art lessons will restart here at the gallery next year. Otherwise, we will return to the local hall. The building has been a great distraction for us. It is something positive to focus on. “Although I have had cancer return we are fighting that. One thing I tell people is if you or anyone you know is in palliative care, and you have life insurance, cash it in. “My doctor didn’t know about that option. It was our daughter who had heard about it, so we queried it. After providing our oncologist’s letter, we
were paid out the next day, and you can use the funds at your discretion. It is to make your life easier during this time.” The Moores used the funds to pay off debt. “We are using the rest to build the studio. Having the policy paid out early has taken an awful lot of pressure off our family. I love sitting inside my house, watching what is going on outside. “Richard built our beautiful subtropical garden from scratch — maybe I picked up the hammer once and passed it to him. Our plants were all seedlings or pups when we began. Some were given to us and others we swapped. “Richard built three waterfalls by hand, utilising the neighbour’s old concrete footpath. “ He then used mortar to mould the concrete into rocks. wanting to add the gallery for about 30 years, so now we are turning the dream into reality. “It is exciting, especially since Richard can work in any medium, including carving and sculpting. He was born a multi-talented artist and also carves things like opals and gemstones. “Our garden is very healing, and it is a beautiful place to be. We look out to it every day and feel very settled and grounded. We purchased a few special things like palms when we started 13 years ago and Richard knows every single plant. “It has grown so much, and we also use our plants for the gardens around town and gifting to people. “We use sunflower seeds from the bulk bins and also have cycads, bromeliads and succulents. They all blend together like a coral
reef and seaweed out of the water. It is all about textures, colour and contrasts and the waterfalls finish it off beautifully. We intend to have artworks displayed throughout the garden as well. “There are a lot of hidden artists up here, including creative writers, singers, film producers and actors all hidden away. “We have recently met some really interesting people new to the area. “People say they have travelled the world and never seen a nicer garden than ours. “It is especially nice for me as I lay on the couch and look at the landscape we have created. “I pretend we are at a resort in Bali or somewhere, it is soothing for the soul, and I am proud of all Richard has put his hand to.” ¢

Moving your business online u by Corinne Smith, Altitude Advisors Ltd, director and chartered accountant
There are many reasons why most businesses are now choosing to be completely online and have no files or paper anywhere to be seen. What are the benefits of moving your business online? Leading research has revealed that most consumers like to search for information online before they shop. So if you don’t have a website, webstore or social media page, then this is a great place to start to bring your business into the online world. Most of us do this, but there are many other online solutions for the rest of your business. Moving to the cloud can work for every part of your business. Imagine having access to job costing, time tracking, receipt/expense tracking, inventory management, fixed assets, accounting and payroll systems with an internet connection. Get instant access to your business data anywhere in the world, at any time of the day or night. The cloud has been a gamechanger for technology, making it easier for businesses to get access to world-class software at more affordable prices. So let’s take a look at some benefits of moving your business online: • Improve data security and aid disaster recovery by having your data stored safely in the cloud • Automatic software updates save you time and money • You can have a store location without geographical boundaries • You can work anywhere and anytime with an internet connection with real time data
and better reporting insights • Provide a 24/7 way for people to find out more information about your business and to get in touch with you • Generate more leads and build your business’s credibility and exposure • Deliver broader value to a much wider range of customers • Connect to apps that talk to each other to eliminate data re-entry • Cloud software tends to be offered as a subscription service, so you’re not tied into contracts • Gain access to the latest technology for relatively low prices • Environmentally friendly, get that feel-good feeling by reducing your carbon footprint • Potential to make money while you sleep by selling products online and taking prepaid bookings History tells us that it’s the most agile businesses that can endure and survive volatile economic landscapes. The commonality that these businesses share is that they use cloud-based tools or have an online presence. Moreover, you can too; regardless of whether you’re a sole trader or a small business with a few employees. If you haven’t made a move yet, then let’s address some of the reasons that may be holding you back. ¢

Life in the shadows u by Liz Clark
Silently foraging beneath the protective canopy of the mangroves and saltmarsh vegetation on the Kaipara and Mangawhai Harbours is a bird that is rarely seen.
p The banded rail is native to New Zealand; other subspecies from the same family can also be found in Australia, the Cocos Island, Melanesia and western Polynesia
Since the 1970s the banded rail has been in decline due to human activity, habitat reduction and introduced mammalian predators such as possums, stoats, cats and rats. Once found across New Zealand, the banded rail is now only present in the upper North Island, Marlborough, Nelson and offshore islands. Secretive and naturally uncommon, this bird species is well adapted to the estuarine environment. A medium-sized bird, its intricate plumage provides perfect camouflage to blend it in with its environment protecting it against predators while it feeds. Adult banded rail can be recognised by the olive-green feathers streaked with black and spotted white on its crown and back. A pale-grey eyebrow stripe, cheeks and throat are separated by a reddishbrown eyestripe that runs from the bill back to the nape of the same colour. A broad buff-orange band lies across the

breast and is separated from the grey throat by a narrow band of black-andwhite barring. The barring continues around and below its breast band turning to bold stripes on the belly. The bill is reddish brown, eyes are dark red and the legs pinkish brown. Breeding season is in spring and summer. The birds construct a rough nesting platform made up of rushes and reeds concealed in jointed rush thickets, 30–50cm above the ground or water level. Four to six pale-pinkish eggs with dark blotches of brown and grey colouring are laid. The chicks hatch after an incubation period of 19 to 25 days. Banded rails forage mainly on snails, crabs, worms and spiders. However, they will also feed on dead fish, seeds and fruit when available. The birds spend 75% of their time foraging beneath mangrove canopies, usually morning and evening, and the water’s edge as the tide recedes. ¢

Election 2020 — health
13
u by Andy Bryenton
In a year when the world has faced the biggest health crisis in a century, healthcare is high on the list of voters’ priorities. Here’s where the major parties stand on health in a postcoronavirus future. The ACT party pledged no cuts to the health budget, but they are advocates of restructuring our local health boards, from 20 down to five. They want to focus on board members being elected for their merits and exper tise. They also want to raise awareness of mental health ser vices, and say they will increase innovation in health by ‘getting the government out of the way’, so that treatments available overseas can be implemented here, too. It’s unclear if this would involve private medical care or public/private partnerships. The Labour Party is doubling down on their Covid response track record as a steady hand on the tiller of health. They say they will continue to reverse the ‘underfunding’ of the health sector during the Key administration, which they blame for lack of resources and services. A core platform is the
rebuild of Dunedin Hospital, which was postponed by Covid. Labour touts a bricks and mortar, more funds health portfolio; the ‘there’s no substitute for more doctors, more nurses, and more hospitals’ approach. National plans to provide better access to GP services, dentists and other front line health care providers by expanding the safety net of the community services card to 600,000 more low-income New Zealanders, with GP fees capped at $18 a visit. They also have a mental health and addiction programme to instigate, which aims to cut back the social cost of addiction and reduce our woeful suicide numbers. Another promise is to establish a school of Rural Medicine, to help feed medical expertise to our regional towns. The Green Party adopted a strong social-democracy approach, saying
They want to focus on board members being elected for their merits and expertise
p A world-class healthcare and hospital system is seen by many voters as priority number one, especially as New Zealand has an ageing population
that all health care should be free at the earliest stage of intervention, for the largest number of people. They say they’ll place a higher priority on preventative care and broadly agree with the approach that more resources are needed to guarantee best outcomes. New Zealand First is looking at rebates for those with private health insurance, while also establishing a
public health compact stipulating the guaranteed minimum services the public can expect from the public health system and its overlap with the private sector. Unsurprisingly considering their past advocacy for older citizens, they are also committed to improving elder care, including setting new standards for rest homes and hospitals. ¢
