A work of glass

AT A GLANCE

Samantha Minnery became interested in glass as a young child when she saw a family friend’s kiln in action. Through a series of events as an adult, she decided to return to the classroom and rediscovered her love of glass while studying ceramics. She is now known for her unique pieces, particularly feathers and angel wings, as well as her range of vintage jewellery.

Diana Langton grew up in Omaha and moved to the Kaiwaka area six years ago with her husband Antony and three children for a lifestyle change. “We wanted our children to have paddocks to run around while they grow up,” says Diana. “When I was a child, my dad would bake with me every single Sunday. I developed a passion for good baking and started a patisserie chef course when I was in the sixth form. “I ended up working in the corporate side of the industry, but I always went back to the practical side. “Time passed, and we had our daughter Ariella. When she was six months old, I had made it into the

and work out how I wanted to run it.” Diana is now famous for her doughnuts, cupcakes and speciality baking, including threedimensional cakes. “Over lockdown, I perfected my recipes and kicked things off at the Mangawhai Market, and it was a huge success. The first day we sold 150 doughnuts in 40 minutes and the next 120 doughnuts in 20 minutes. “I turned desserts into doughnuts and use pannacottas and five-star desserts and also have a classic range as well. I did that alongside a photography business and had three more children. “Last year, I decided to start Four Little Birds cakery. The four little birds represent our children. Anthony and Dad drove to Wanganui to pick up a small little coffee cart and got home just in time for the first lockdown. “That worked well as it gave me the opportunity to get everything together

outgrew the coffee cart in a few months and upgraded to a food truck. “We became so popular I recently moved to the shop that was the original takeaway shop in Kaiwaka opposite Eutopia Cafe. It has lots of pink and lights on it. “We changed the structure so I can stay open during lockdowns and work in with family life. I love the creative side of my business and making amazing specialised cakes. “We are no longer a cafe. We are a custom cake shop creating all types of cakes, cupcakes, personalised cookies and doughnuts with a weekly doughnut day.

p Glennie van Prehn was taught how to knit as a young girl with a fascination of seeing a ball of wool become a complete garment

p Using pure and merino wool, Glennie knits for six hours a day to keep her stock rolling over

A knitter’s paradise u by Ann van Engelen

Glennie van Prehn has turned knitting into a passion since moving to Waipū nine years ago with her husband, Eddie. “We would often travel to Waipū for day trips from Devonport in Auckland, and we loved the area,” says Glennie. “Eddie drove container trucks, and I worked in the television industry transferring advertisements from film to videotape before digital technology came in. “We were looking for a location to eventually move to. I knew we wanted to be near a doctor, a library, post shop and supermarket and this house appeared on Trademe. We loved it, so we moved five years earlier than planned. “We left many friends behind, but it was perfect for us. It is so peaceful and beautiful here. Although Devonport was nice, living in Waipū is comforting.

People are very community focussed and help if something goes wrong.” Glennie now focusses her time on knitting items for babies and toddlers, which she sells at the monthly Waipū Boutique Sunday Market. “My mum and nana taught me to knit when I was nine years old. It fascinated me that you could create something with a bit of wool and some needles. “In the 1980s, I knitted big fluffy jerseys with huge flowers for my friends. When we moved here, I started knitting pure and merino wool baby items, and my products started selling really well at the market. “People at times don’t realise how much work is involved with knitting. THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER October 1 2021

p Claudia shares several sustainable living ideas and beliefs through the moon calendar she has produced

p Claudia Moir has diversified her travel business and created a calendar to help people live a sustainable lifestyle with moon knowledge

Life with the moon u by Ann van Engelen

Claudia Moir has lived in Mangawhai for 20 years after immigrating to Aotearoa from Vienna, Austria. “Ten years ago, I started my travel broker business, booking holidays all over the world for local residents,” says Claudia. “In 2020, when Covid-19 hit and our borders closed, I had to reinvent myself. I created the Mangawhai Travel Club and joined with Leabourn’s Passenger Service to offer domestic tours for locals. “I still needed more to do and had this idea when I was attending a relaxation class on May 26, which happened to be a super moon. “Growing up in Austria, we used a moon diary and calendar, and I realised we don’t have the same format here. We have calendars here like the Maramataka Māori Moon Calendar but not all the information in one easy-toread format like we do in Austria.

“My husband and I do a lot of gardening and have done a lot of research. I am no ‘moon expert’, but I decided to put what we learned together in the one place.” Claudia’s calendar includes topics like planting, weeding, fishing, cleaning the house and cutting your hair by the phases of the moon. “I use a lot of my heritage from Austria and have adapted it to the New Zealand climate. I was taught as a child that cutting your hair on the waning moon is known to help it grow thick and healthy. “The moon is the same. When it is full here, it is full there as well. We just have different seasons. The calendars are all about how to live more sustainably and in tune with nature.

“Our ancestors learned by observation over time that the success of many activities like fishing, gardening, cutting wood, harvesting and fertilising the soil is dependent on the right timing. “You will find these symbols pictured in both the A5 Moon diary and the A4 Moon wall calendar to suggest the best time for each of activities aligned with the lunar cycles throughout the year. “The diary also includes the zodiac signs the moon passes through each day, suggestions for weekly gardening and room for personal notes. Of course, other influences in nature like the tides and the weather come into play as well. “Just about every culture in the world has embraced the moon, as have our Māori people. They have preserved the

knowledge so well, and I really appreciate their efforts to keep this knowledge alive. “I believe that moon calendars have contributed to the whole organic gardening movement, and it is important knowledge to pass on no matter what culture or heritage you have. “The calendars are available through the Moonpower.co.nz website. The website has a lot of information on it, and we have had a lot of positive feedback. “People are so interested in moon planting and things, and it is nice to see our communities getting back to basics and nature. I am pleased to be able to help them gain an understanding of how to have a more sustainable lifestyle. “If I can help one person gain knowledge to live more in tune with nature, it is all worth it.” ¢

Time to colour up u by Liz Clark

Spring is finally here, along with the warmer temperatures to start apple blossom and soft white flowers. deep blue blooms put out continuous This cultivar grows up to 1.5m tall. cooling colour for months. There’s also coaxing annual flower seeds to life. Annuals last for all but a single growing season. However, they bring colour and life to the garden throughout spring, summer and autumn before the dullness of winter returns. If you haven’t already, the first thing to do is get the garden beds prepared with compost, organic matter and a good dose of blood and bone ready for the seedlings to go in. Don’t forget the mulch for later on. It will help keep the weeding to a minimum and the weeds from taking over, and out-competing the plants you want to feature.

Don’t be shy about using bold colour combinations and forms to bring life around the outdoor living areas. If you have a fence that needs to be made a little less boring, plant tall-growing sunflowers such as ProCut Plum, Moulin Rouge F1, Russian Giant and Sunrich Golden Yellow. Sow seeds weekly for continuous colour well into late autumn and early winter. Hollyhocks are another tall-growing and highly attractive flowering annual. Take a look at The Bridesmaids, an outstanding double-flowered form of

Staking is recommended to prevent the plants from being damaged by strong winds. Delphiniums are another excellent choice for background flowers. Pacific Giants Mix and Shogun Mix F1 Hybrid selections provide multiple colours and perfect blooms for the vase indoors. In the broad spectrum of annuals, there are the classics such as alyssum, which comes in several colours, including the classic white. These make attractive standouts in pots, borders and in beds. Lobelia is another classic that comes to mind, especially Crystal Palace. Perfect for pots and borders, the

Easy care and undemanding they flower profusely and are now available in a variety of colours. Take a look at Flamenco, Bonanza Deep Orange, Durango Mix, Fireball, French Vanilla and Strawberry Blond. For pots, many flowering annuals can be grown; plant celosia, carnations, Livingstone daisies, pansies, begonia, impatiens, strawflowers and mimuluses. For more, look online or visit your nearest garden centre.

12 October 1 2021 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

p Samantha Minnery has spent many years honing her talent of working with glass and constantly aims for perfection

A work of glass u by Ann van Engelen

Glass artist Samantha Minnery had her dreams come true when she moved to the Rakaunui Art Village in Mangawhai six years ago. “I grew up in Christchurch and moved to Auckland with my mum when I was 15 years old,” says Samantha. “The village has been here for nearly 40 years. It was started by three couples with their young families who built their houses and lived off the land. I used to visit a friend here when I was studying glass at Unitech. “Six years ago, I was looking for a place to live. I saw a photo of a house with pretty windows, doors and sundrenched floors advertised. I discovered it was here and drove to Mangawhai to view it and knew instantly this was my home. “I had always wanted to live in a church, and this is just like one. It has a high pitched roof, double helix spiral staircase and stained glass windows — it is magic. “I had to trust I could afford it as I was working part-time in Auckland. Previously, I had managed hairdressing

salons for 14 years and took a break. I then decided to study, but I didn’t know if I could be an adult student. “My only interest at school was art, so I chose a part-time jewellery

and ceramics course for six months. I enjoyed it and got really good marks for the first time in my life. “My jewellery teacher then encouraged me to do a degree, so I chose Design and Visual Arts/Contemporary Craft.

“I have been interested in glass since I was a child as we had a family friend who had kilns, and I loved watching them work. One day in the ceramics class, the technician was showing another student glass in the kiln. I discovered I was as interested as I was as a child. “Danny, the ceramics tutor, had studied glass and then started showing me the kilns and equipment behind the scenes. I was able to experiment and asked if I could major in glass even though they weren’t offering it as a subject. “Danny offered to help me, and I majored in glass sculpture, objects and design. I created pieces such as big glass angel wings and bowls. Through my study, I met the very talented glass and sculpture artist Te Rongo Kirkwood. “I worked alongside Te Rongo in exchange for trade of knowledge, and I gleaned a lot of skill from her. She taught

p Using glass rods and recycling glass, Samantha’s artworks are unique and often represent what she feels and senses

p Vintage glass has become an important feature in Samantha’s jewellery, often reminding purchasers of times past

p Investing hours of work and using hundreds of individual pieces, Samantha created her piece called Presence, a representation of what a soul looks like

me to create, grind and shape. I work each piece until I love it. “As a student, I exhibited my large angel wings in the New Zealand Glass Society exhibition and ended up in the room with Te Rongo’s work that I helped her with. I was in absolute awe of all the artists’ works. “Sir James Wallace attended the exhibition and I didn’t know it was a thing to have him collect your art.” Samantha had her Angel Wings on display but not for sale. “I didn’t want to sell them because I loved them so much, but Sir James asked to buy them for his private collection at Rannoch House. I was shocked and very honoured as his collection is amazing. It is beautiful to know that future generations will see my angel wings. “A lot of my work is inspired by what I sense and feel of the afterlife. Some of my sculptures were tangible representations of what I see, while my

dripping glass pieces represent what I see and feel with my mind’s eye. “One sculpture is thousands of glass pieces hanging from silver mesh called Presence. It lights up with the sun like what I would expect a soul to look like. My different feathers represent various experiences you may have had making up your being. “For my bowls, I recycle safety glass by smashing it and rearranging it inside a mould. I melt it in the kiln to fuse back together. At times they can look like ice blocks melted together. “I also work with glass rods and a hot torch to get an icicle look. As it melts, I form it for angel feathers and things.” Samantha began making earrings and pendants from old glass she rescued from her grandmother’s 150-year-old villa in Christchurch. “I have collected old glass for years, but my grandmother’s windows are

very special. My mum remembers the glass being in her grandma’s bathroom when she was young, and I have fond memories of the house. “For making jewellery, I cut, grind, shape and polish the pieces and sell them at the Mangawhai Tavern Market every Saturday or through my Samantha Joy Minnery Glass Artist Facebook page. “A lot of people have purchased items because it reminds them of where they grew up, someone they have lost or their grandmother’s windows. “My friend, Rupert’s mum, does stained glass window repairs in India and Tuscany, Italy. She wrote a book and sent me information on how to work with vintage glass. “The older glass is uneven, and the sun reflects better, so now to get something to match, people melt bottles down to get the same effect. “Being a perfectionist, it has taken me a while not to focus on the mistakes

in my work. Sometimes I am blown away by the result I get. At times you certainly feel like you have unseen help, and I may not have a plan but can see clearly what I am making. “I love each piece I make, and being fussy, if I don’t like the quality, I won’t put it on display. I have things I didn’t finish, such as a certain bowl, but I can’t throw it out, and I still like it even if it is a bit ugly. “I do the Mangawhai Tavern Markets on Saturdays and have lots of fun meeting people. Living here is like going into another world. The best part of my journey is that I have met likehearted people. I fit really well with the artists here. “There are magic pockets all throughout the area. For me, the best thing that ever happened was I needed to take a break from city life to end up here. It is a very magical place to be.” ¢

p Waipū Museum staff Richard Reynolds, Barbara Russell and Lynn Nicholson enjoy the community feel they have at the museum

p The Waipū Museum is home to a lot of historical artefacts and memorabilia from the early settlers

Preserving heritage u by Ann van Engelen

The Waipū Museum staff and volunteers warmly welcome people in the region to visit and discover the history of the district. “The museum, originally called The House of Memories, was opened in 1953,” says manager Sandra McKay. “It was built for the centennial to house artefacts and historical pieces to tell the story of the global migration from the Highlands of Scotland, to Nova Scotia for around 30 years, and then via Australia, on to New Zealand. “We are currently updating our museum display and adding to the story, both pre-contact and at the time of the first settler arrival. “The museum has a mix of staff and volunteers. A lot of new residents have joined the team, which makes it a nice way for them to get to know the area. They often have new ideas, which is good, as we are always trying to improve what we do.”

The museum has a popular gift shop. “We enjoy meeting people and try our best to support local artists and suppliers,” says shop manager Lynn Nicholson. “One of our local artists sells beautiful paintings; we have flax kete, ceramics, linen, children’s and older audience books. “Our Scottish-themed range of gifts includes tartan scarves from Scotland, made from beautiful fine wool. We have handmade dolls, Glennie’s pure wool knitted items, and beautiful fine china Dunoon mugs. You can always find something different like our Waipū tartan face masks. This tartan is officially registered in Scotland and was designed by local children and museum board members about 10 years ago.”

The Waipū tartan includes vibrant colours of a number of clans and represents the six ships that arrived in the 1850s. “The camaraderie here is beautiful. It is a lovely positive environment,” says volunteer Barbara Russell. “We learn something new every day and constantly hear stories from people passing through with a connection to the town. Those with a link to Scotland or Nova Scotia are especially enthralled with our collection and the information we have. “Visitors are often pleasantly surprised as we have a little bit of everything on sale and gorgeous artefacts from Scotland and things like kauri gum on display. During the month of October, we are running

a prize draw for our children’s quiz where the visiting children find various items located around the museum. All completed entries can go into the draw. “There are new dates for this year’s Art ‘n Tartan Wearable Art Contest and Show. Providing Northland is in level one Covid restrictions, the show will be held on November 12 and 13. “Director Debi Walters Brown is planning a great show with local kapa haka groups, dancers and, of course, the iconic Scottish pipers. Tickets are now on sale on Eventfinda.co.nz and are also available during the week from the museum. They are already selling fast, so don’t miss out.” The Waipū Museum is open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm. ¢

Whangārei charity I Have a Dream is backing the kaupapa of Mental Health Awareness Week, agreeing such efforts need to continue year-round in Te Tai Tokerau, including Kaipara and the rest of the country. “I believe it is critical to consistently, genuinely and openly connect and reconnect with people we care about and who may need support — especially amidst lockdowns,” says I Have a Dream CEO, Chris Twiss. “The efforts of our IHAD navigators Joe, Vince and Daisy, have been seen in recent days. Millionaire’s shortbread u by Jessica Keesing

Looking for something that’s exceptionally sweet? Well, look no further because you’ve found the recipe that does the trick. A firm and lovely shortbread base with a gooey salted caramel centre topped with delicious chocolate. INGREDIENTS Base 160g butter ¹⁄³ cup white sugar 2 cups flour Caramel 1 tin condensed milk ¾ cup white sugar 110g butter 2 tbsp golden syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract 1–3 tsp flaky sea salt Topping 150g chocolate 1 tbsp coconut oil

METHOD Preheat the oven to 160° Celsius. Line a 20cm baking pan with baking paper. Combine butter and sugar together until smooth. Add flour and combine with mixer until the mixture resembles sand. Press into the tin until flat and even. Bake the base for 35 minutes or until the edges are golden. Allow to cool before adding the caramel layer. In a medium-sized pot, combine condensed milk, sugar, butter and golden syrup. Heat over a medium heat for about five minutes, stirring constantly. When the mixture starts to turn golden, remove from the heat and add vanilla and salt. Pour over the shortbread base and make sure to cover the entire base in an even layer. Set aside in the fridge for a couple of hours to set completely. Melt chocolate and oil over a water bath or in the microwave. Pour over caramel and set aside for a few hours. Remove from the tin, cut and enjoy!

p Students of all ages and their families are invited to attend Athletics Whangārei’s open day and experience various sport disciplines

17

p High jump and long jump are just some of the events on offer to try at the athletics open day

Growing athletics in Tai Tokerau A major drive is underway to grow athletics in Northland, with Junior Athletics Whangārei hosting its inaugural open day. The event organisers invite Northlanders from throughout Kaipara, Whangārei and the Far North to ‘come and have a go’ on Sunday, October 17, from 10am to noon at Trigg Stadium, Park Avenue, Whangārei. “Anyone from seven years to 107 years old is welcome to attend the two-hour event,” says co-organiser Kirstin Dickens. “We want to seriously boost participation levels in athletics because we have this amazing facility in

Whangārei, and it simply is not being utilised anywhere near enough by our community. “We are hoping for a really good turnout of primary, intermediate and secondary school students from around Northland. “In the 2020/21 season, I worked with an awesome bunch of passionate parents to breathe some life into our junior athletics, and we lifted our numbers from 50 to 120 children age seven to 14.

“We want to take that to another level this season and have children from across Northland to attend our weekly fun sessions, plus other activities throughout the season.” The open day is a chance for people to have a go at running events, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot-put and discus. “We are all volunteers running the club, and we want to do our best to give youngsters the chance to experience athletics and receive good coaching to

hone their skills. MOnth Day 2021 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

A productive workspace u by Ann van Engelen

Julie Monaghan and her husband Colin Paterson have taken the opportunity to turn their property into a multi-faceted business area. “We lived in Auckland and had a beach house at Langs Beach for 20 years,” says Julie. “We were given the opportunity to buy the old Cullen landscape yard here at 107 Mangawhai Heads Road, so we brought it with the view to develop it more. “We built it up over five years and also built ContainIt Storage using shipping containers on-site. We then sold the landscape business to Wyatt Landscaping. “The storage business is going really well, and we are presently expanding. I run the business, and Colin does the building. He also built the Fit365 gym here, and it is going well with Aaron and Joanne McIlwee owning it now. “They are really caring and provide Auckland quality fitness right here. It is a great place to network with the community, and we have made a lot of friends through socialising at the gym.” Julie and Colin noticed people were asking for temporary office space to work out of.

“There is a need for people to have a private space to work in at present. Some need a day, some a week and others long-term. “I have a cabin I work out of, so we decided to build four more and call it ContainIt Rent an Office. You can make video calls, run meetings and work with high-speed internet. “The cabins are brand new and feel like a complete office space with air conditioning, blinds, jugs, mugs and fridges. They are very professional and comfortable. “We currently have rehabilitation physiotherapist Sara Allan sharing a space with her husband Mike from Allan Plumbing and Gas, and it works really well. We have been renting out the other spaces for meetings and individual workers. “We have people who can’t get to their offices in Auckland in mind because it isn’t always practical to work from home. “People starting up a business also use them as they can come and work a few hours, the whole day or a week. The feedback has been really encouraging,

p Julie Monaghan developed ContainIt Rent and Office to provide a comfortable workspace for people who cannot get to their offices due to lockdown

and clients are loving them, and the high-speed Wi-Fi is really convenient. “I am a corporate person at heart, and it feels really good to open up the space to help others. We understand the need to have a private, comfortable, functional workspace, and I designed it around what I like. “We can also set up a boardroom table if need be, so construction workers can

meet together as well. We love that we have turned a space that was run down into a space where people enjoy coming. “Our Containit.kiwi website has all the information. We are really proud of what we have managed to build over six years, and the locals have been fantastic. We love being involved in the Mangawhai, Langs Beach and Waipū communities.” ¢
