“People put their heart and soul into their businesses, and we have seen throughout the various Covid lockdowns that supporting local as much as we could is what gets us through the really tough times,” says NorthChamber CEO Steve Smith. “Supporting each other is what will help us come out the other side and bounce back really well. It is a sentiment echoed by principal sponsors of the NorthChamber Business Excellence Awards, Top Energy and Northpower.

“A lot of Northlanders invest heavily to create businesses in the region, and it is really important we support them to help reward them for the risks they take and the hard yards they put in,” he says. “Sometimes, it just takes asking a few questions to find out what are locally owned businesses and what are not.” Mr Gray is the sponsor of the 2021 Emerging Business Category. “That is also the value of being a member of NorthChamber because we can all work together to support

Supporting each other is what will help us come out the other side and bounce back really well

“I think, as we work through the 2021 NorthChamber Business Excellence Awards process, it is a timely reminder for us all to have a look around and make sure we are supporting locally owned businesses where we can. “Coming out of lockdown is a critical time for us to back each other and keep money cycling in Northland. It only takes a minute to check in with friends and colleagues to find out exactly which businesses are locally owned. Supporting them will help the region on the road to economic recovery.” Mr Smith’s sentiments are being endorsed by Whangārei business owner Cameron Thompson from Northland Document Solutions and Allan Gray from Wynn Fraser Paints, respectively. The pair believe people are often unaware they are supporting major corporates instead of locally-owned businesses. Mr Thompson is the Large Business Category sponsor in the 2021 awards.

each other and get the region ahead economically and socially,” said Mr Gray. “People like Cam and I really enjoy giving back to the community in a number of ways, and like every locally owned business, we need the support of locals to do that. “We wish all entrants in the 2021 awards luck and look forward to meeting them when the awards are presented on October 29.” Judging of entry submissions for the 2021 NorthChamber Northland Business Excellence Awards should run until September 24. However, judging of the business categories also includes a visit to the business premises by a member of the judging panel. Due to the recent lockdown situation, visits may extend beyond September 24. Participating in the Northland Business Excellence Awards is free. The health of Northlanders is being improved thanks to the Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau insulation programme, which has reached a significant milestone with 12,000 homes across the region now warmer and drier. The programme was launched in 2007 and has had a hugely positive impact on tens of thousands of Northlanders who otherwise would not have had their homes insulated. The insulation scheme has drastically improved the quality of life for thousands of Northland families while lessening the dire impact and spread of respiratory illness. The organisers behind the initiative plan to continue insulating as many Northland homes as possible in the next few years. It will be made possible thanks to the support of sponsors and funding from Foundation North and longtime supporters, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. Funding of the insulation programme is due to long-term financial contributions from EECA, Foundation North, Top Energy, Northpower, Mahitahi Hauora and Northland DHB. Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau is a joint venture between two Northland community enterprises, the Community Business and Environment Centre in Kaitaia and He Iwi Kotahi Tatou Trust in Moerewa. It is also supported by numerous other Northland healthcare and wellbeing entities. The two trusts have a 30-year history of turning local environmental and social problems into positive local solutions.

p The installation team for Healthy Homes Te Tai Tokerau

Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau covers all of Northland, employing six install teams from local skilled labour and only using the highest quality NZ-manufactured polyester insulation products. In 2020 Community Business and Environment Centre’s teams insulated 829 homes in Te Tai Tokerau — 39 were in Kaipara, 215 in Whangarei and 31 in the southern areas of Northland. By the end of June 2021, 539 homes had

been insulated, including 162 in the Whangārei area, 36 in Kaipara and 33 in lower Northland. CBEC’s operations assistant manager Hone Fowler says he is proud of the work his team is doing. “They are so committed to making homes in Tai Tokerau warmer, drier and healthier, and the mahi they do is pretty hard,” says Mr Fowler. “We get so much positive feedback from people who have had their homes

insulated because of the difference it makes to their lives in making their house warmer and improving their health. “It is a privilege to be involved in this kaupapa.” For more information on the Healthy Homes initiative, phone 0800 738 763 or go to healthyhomesnorth.co.nz. A duo of progression u by Liz Clark

Waipū has always boasted a significant amount of heritage in its many historic buildings; two once had pride of place for postal and banking services in the township. In 1903, the township residents found the existing post and telegraph office was no longer adequate. During May of that year, the Minister of Public Works William Hall-Jones was approached by several community members to have a new post office built and sited in a more convenient location. At the time, a suggestion was made to house the police station in the existing building. Hall-Jones said he would commission a report on the matter and include it in the government estimates for the next budget round. It wasn’t until September 1905, the sum of £850 was budgeted and approved by parliament. In February 1906, with the construction of the new post office confirmed, a resident complained in a letter to an Auckland newspaper that self-interested parties were attempting to have the building sited in an out-ofthe-way location. ‘Those who are trusted with the oversight of these public works should see that the people’s money be used for the good of the people, and not to satisfy a few wire-pullers,’ they wrote. A year later, in February 1907, tenders for the new building were advertised. The plans for the post office had been designed by prominent architect

Scottish-born John Campbell, who later designed Wellington’s Parliament House. In early March 1908, the official opening took place overseen by then prime minister Sir Joseph Ward. The post office building would go on to serve for several decades before it was closed in 1989. During the early 1920s, banking services were provided once a week from leased premises by the National Bank of New Zealand. With the Waipū

Co-operative Dairy Company factory’s presence and dairying now the heart of the local economy, business was booming. So it was, a new building was commissioned in 1923. Dargaville-based Reginald Bedford Hammond was the architect behind the corner-site building. His father, Horace Hammond, had previously designed buildings for the National Bank including Paparoa and Maungaturoto. RB Hammond would

later be part of the design team during the 1940s for the first state houses in New Zealand. Whangārei builder William Durham was contracted to build the wooden bank building. The new bank was opened on July 1 1924, with a low-key celebration by its manager Mr Lindsay, followed by an afternoon tea. As with the post office, the bank served the community for several decades until late 2000, when it closed. ¢

It was a natural process for Jan Grover to join the Mangawhai Artists group when she moved to the area 16 years ago. “Since leaving school, I have dabbled in various forms of art including pottery, photography and paints,” says Jan. “I love the freedom painting gives to express yourself. I painted every day with people from across the world, including John Lobett, a well-known Australian artist. “During lockdown last year, I decided to get a camper van and travel around New Zealand. I named my van Wanda Woman because I think I may be a gipsy at heart. “Last Christmas, I toured the South Island to attend the Music in the Mountains rally with the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association. The air was so clear that the painting looked bold, but it actually was the reality of the scene. “Art to me is creating an atmospheric feeling that draws people in. I like catching the light on the water. Once I start a painting, I work quickly to capture the mood I want to express. “I love having the freedom to go to beautiful places in New Zealand. Giving the old an uplift u by Liz Clark

With the emphasis in recent times on reducing items being sent to the landfill, recycling or upcycling old items has become a popular trend for gardens. Everything from old shoes to disused windows can be turned into an array of useful things that would otherwise be thrown away. Looking around in my inneed-of-care garden, an old tractor tyre used formerly as a sandpit for children caught this writer’s eye. With some imagination, a few barrow loads of compost and soil and some wildflower seeds, an eyesore like a tractor tyre can be transformed into a focus of beauty and colour throughout the growing season. On a smaller scale, if you have an old car tyre lying around, rather than throw it away, get some colourful paint and brighten it. Line it with some polythene, fill it up with a container mix or whatever is available and turn it into a planter for annuals such as lobelia, alyssum and others. Miniature sunflowers, such as Teddy Bear, can make a fun way to interest young children in the joys of gardening. Old gumboots, sandshoes and work boots can be filled with a sandy soil mix and planted with succulents or small cacti. Drill holes in the bottoms

for drainage, place some gravel in the bottom, add soil and put in a plant. Discarded tin buckets are another attractive option for growing plants such as lavender and other flowering herbs. For anyone artistically inclined, the surface can be decorated with folk art designs using paint designed for metal. In the past, I’ve used old plastic buckets to grow tomatoes successfully. These days with smaller varieties available, such as patio tomatoes, a ready supply can be available on the doorstep. Ensure a rich mix of compost and well-drained soil are provided for your plants when using a bucket. Old fence battens too can be utilised and turned into rustic, useful planter boxes for bulbs and herbs. Discarded fence pallets are also a versatile material to recycle into screens and wall planters. Cloches can be made using old alkathene water pipe, decking timber and chicken netting. All of these mentioned have plans and instructions online. Alternatively, join an upcycling group on Facebook for more inspirational ideas.

The principal of Mangawhai Beach School, Aaron Kemp, says he is pleased with the progress his students are making this year, considering the various disruptions. “Our staff and students are in good spirits, even with the lockdowns,” says Aaron. “I have been here for 10-years now, and we have grown from 230 pupils to 580. This year we opened a new block of 10 classrooms and will reach 600 students in term four.” The school presently has 25 classrooms plus two Portacoms with plans for further expansion in the future. “We have a really nice culture exhibiting our values of CREW — creativity, resilience, excellence and whakatau, which means respect in Māori. The students know what our behaviour expectations are, and it is encouraging to see the children show these values in their everyday lives.” The school has a haka and a rap song that incorporates the CREW values. “We have lovely families who uphold them as well, and this helps immensely when we are dealing with issues that may arise. I have also employed a teacher who is fully released for the pastoral care of the students. “She is available for all children and ensures those with high anxiety can get help and access to counselling and other resources if need be. This is important with the high anxiety situations at the moment that we all face due to Covid. “The parents and caregivers did really well helping their children learn during the recent lockdown. We set weekly tasks of must-dos and can-dos with two

google meets during the week. It was really enjoyable with more than 50 per cent of people engaging with us online. “Students met with their fellow classmates online to chat. Some showed us their favourite toy and others wore their silly hats. It was a fun friendship building experience. “We had 18 essential workers students attend school, and the older age group really stepped up and helped the younger. It was so nice to see them caring for each other. “We are pleased to be back at school now. Hira Gage, the Tai Tokerau Minister of Education, has been brilliant

in communicating with me regarding reopening as we are on the Auckland and Northland border. “We are looking forward to having everyone back together again. Our little guys want to be at school, and the teachers want to teach in the classroom. Teaching is their passion. “The rest of the year is looking exciting, but our fundraising, which pays for our support staff and other things,

has been affected. We are having to shift our annual golf tournament and come up with other ideas to raise extra funds. “My deputy principal Emma Grieve is a big asset, as is my team of 54 staff. I came here for the lovely rural lifestyle by the beach, and things have moved forward positively. I love being the principal of my school and am blessed to have a good team and whānau surrounding me.” ¢

p With her sixth CD nearly completed, Carleen encourages people to enjoy life and follow their dreams

A charitable melody u by Ann van Engelen

Carleen Still was introduced to country music as a baby and continues to use her talent to raise funds for charities. Married with two children, Carleen rides motorbikes, performs regularly at events around the country such as the Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival and is a real estate agent. “My husband Peter and I live on a farm, and I work for Ray White Bream Bay based in Waipū. I ran my own beauty therapy salon before I turned to real estate full-time when my business closed due to Covid,” says Carleen. “I grew up in Kerikeri, and my dad worked for the Bay of Islands County Council. “Dad sang at the Little Tennessee Country Music Club and took me to my first Country Music Club in Newmarket when I was three days old. My mum used to put a radio in my cot when I was a baby. Singing is definitely my stress release and calmer — I always have music playing in the background. I started going to the Whangārei Country

Music Club when I was quite young and they were really encouraging. I was a computer engineer and worked at the dairy company and Marsden Point oil refinery.

I grew up in Kerikeri, and my dad worked for the Bay of Islands County Council.

“When I married Peter, he had employment with Fonterra, and we moved to the South Island. We had our two children, and I got terribly homesick, so joined a music club down there, and they encouraged my singing. I also play the bass guitar, and when we moved

back north, I teamed up with a few people, and I am lucky to now have a band that backs me most of the time. “I had always wanted to make my dad a CD of my music, and when I did, people asked if they could buy it. I have now nearly completed my sixth CD. “I only ever had a couple of singing lessons, and then I just watched people. Years ago, I was given some really good advice from well-known country singer the late Graeme McCardle.” Graeme told Carleen ‘it can take years to build up your reputation — but seconds to destroy it’. “I took that on board and try to be very careful about what I do and how I present myself. I have sung as far south as Cromwell at the Golden Notes Hoedown and other places including Ōpōtiki, Hokianga, Paihia, and when I was on holiday in Norfolk Island, I sang there.

“I like helping where I can and I also model in the Art N Tartan Wearable Arts for Mallonae Gartone from Taipa. Mallonae has won several awards which is really nice. “Modelling is something outside of my comfort zone, but I enjoy being involved. Singing is my passion, and real estate pays the bills when we are not in lockdown, and I have met some amazing people. “Peter has ridden motorcycles since he was young, but I didn’t like being on the back. I rode a bike on the farm, so he encouraged me to get my licence and brought me a bike for my birthday. “We believe riding bikes makes you a better car driver but insist people do the Ride Forever course through ACC. They teach you things like look where you want to go, not where you don’t want to go. If you look at a hole in the ground while riding, that is where you

will end up. I also recently performed at the Bream Bay Village — Mid Winter Christmas party, which was a lot of fun. The older generation are a real boppy lot. “I am naturally shy, but when I get onstage, I get dressed up in sparkly outfits, with my hair and make-up done and become a different me. It used to be really hard to find nice clothes because we had limited stores before online shopping. “You would end up at a concert with someone in the same outfit, and it was embarrassing. Having Peter in my band helps my confidence. I do go places without him, but it is always nice having him support me when he can. “Before going onstage, I am always nervous. The band will be ready to start, and I will be out the back forgetting how the song goes. When I get onstage, and the lead guitarist plays the first note, I instantly remember the words.

“I love crowd interaction and getting people onstage with me if I can. It is about helping people enjoy my singing rather than being a showpiece, and that is where my love of fundraising is too. “I organise events with help from some friends, including the annual Wai Worri Country Music Muster, raising money for a different charity in January each year. The stipulation is that all funds must remain in Northland.” Past charities include Heart Kids and Children with Arthritis. “This year, we gave $5,410 to the Children with Arthritis foundation, and next year’s festival is to help North Haven Hospice. They will disperse the finances raised to the different satellite hospices. “The Wai Worri festival is such a fun event and is very different from any other music festival. You may see us out in our pyjamas, with no hair or make-up on. It is all about raising money.”

This year Peter and Carleen also hosted a local fundraiser for the Waipū Primary School swimming pool project. Last year, they supported the Waipū Volunteer Fire Brigade. “We hope to have another local charity with a date to be confirmed. “With singing, I encourage people to have a go. “When I was at school, I tried out for the choir, and it was embarrassing when the teacher said ‘I don’t think singing is for you’. “Not everyone likes country music, but a lot of entertainers start off with country. It is one of the only platforms young people can get up and sing with a full band. “I tell people if you have a dream, follow it, don’t listen to others, prove the naysayers wrong. If I listened to that teacher when I was at school, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” ¢

Inspiration on our doorstep u by Andy Bryenton

Spring is here, and the clear-sky days of summer are close behind, making many people’s minds turn to building and design. Usually, home shows and design expos would be on the cards, but this year what’s hot is right around the corner. Living as we do among some of the most dramatic and sweeping natural landscapes on Earth, east coast midnortherners are spoiled for choice when it comes to framing picturesque vistas. It is a theme that has come through strongly in this year’s Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition; two of the prestigious finalists are right on the coast. “Each year, we are blown away by the levels of craftsmanship and innovation delivered by master builders across the country,” said Registered Master Builders CEO David Kelly. “The awards are an opportunity to recognise their skills in delivering quality homes for New Zealanders.” To win is the capstone achievement of many builders’ and designers’ careers. To reach the finals is a mark of respect from a tough industry and an accolade that points to future trends. In short,

previous homes of the year have been imitated as the sincerest form of flattery. Now, with two homes in one year right nearby, we can look at what they have in common to discern what makes them a cut above the rest, according to the judges. Just as in that old adage, both the Mangawhai home, built by Smith Construction NZ, and the Waipū home, built by Coastal Construction Projects, command sea views to envy. However, it’s how both homes frame these views, with lines of sight clear through from the approach to the horizon, which makes the most of nature’s spectacle. Then there’s the way both homes fit into the landscape, seeming to be part of their environment rather than shoehorned in a brutalist fashion. From materials through to lines, both homes complement their hilltop situations. A

third factor in common; ease of access through large and airy living spaces that anchor the interior to the outdoor scenery. Space is luxury and suggests freedom. These are also homes designed to maximise the northern sun, retain its energy and light, and augment it with clever heating options for a cosy feel in winter. Many of us have more modest means than the lucky individuals who

commissioned these architectural gems. However, we can all take tips and hints from the trends and artistic accents which make them stand out from the everyday. Lemon Slice This delicious slice is a simple one and just one that you want more and more of. Could serve it with fresh berries to add a bit more to it for a dessert. Ingredients 1½ cups flour ½ cup icing sugar 190g soft butter 4 eggs 1 tsp baking powder 1½ cup sugar 3 tbsp flour ½ cup lemon juice

Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. Combine flour, icing sugar and butter together until it makes a fine crumb. Press into a baking tray 23cm x 33cm, bake for 15 minutes. Beat together egg and sugar. Add the rest of the dry ingredients and combine. Once combined, add lemon juice and mix well. Pour over the baked base and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and lemon mixture has set.

Candy Best opened Wandering Willows Kennels and Cattery at Topuni as a place for dogs and cats to be cared for in a sociable setting. “My husband Sam and I came here on our honeymoon from England and loved the country,” says Candy. “We relocated to New Zealand because we were fed up with England and wanted an adventure and to do something new. I have a bachelor’s degree in the animal sciences in behaviour and welfare and continue to do work with rescue charities helping to train and rehome dogs.

“Attending daycare once or twice a week gets them used to being away from their owner, so when you go out, they are calm at home. Often anxious dogs destroy a house or cry when they are left home alone. “Socialising them outside of your circle helps eliminate separation anxiety. It also gets them used to being around other dogs, and most make a circle of friends when they are here.

p As a dog behaviour therapist, Candy helps dogs with anxiety to gain confidence

Socialising them outside of your circle helps eliminate separation anxiety “We decided to buy at Topuni and open Wandering Willows because it is between Auckland and Whangārei. The location is ideal for people going to work or on vacation to drop their cats or dogs off. “With the doggy daycare, we have a mixture of paddocks, which we use for individual dogs or groups based on their temperament and size. We also have an indoor area for rainy days or smaller dogs to sleep in. Some dogs are nervous or anxious, and I enjoy working on their behaviour using reward-based training to make them feel secure. It is exciting to see dogs that are very nervous have their perception change after one on one training for a few days.

“It is cute seeing them run around together having fun. We have a stream running through the middle of the land, and they often chase each other through it.” Wandering Willows cattery has individual indoor rooms. “We are currently building an outdoor patio area for summer, and there is also a group room for cats to play in if they want. We love giving them cuddles. Some stay overnight or a few days while others stay long-term, while their owners travel. “It thrills me that the animals in our care become a part of my family. They have fun and often gain confidence. I love interacting with them — it is a beautiful way to pass time.” ¢

Northland’s sky angels u by Ann van Engelen

For many New Zealanders, 2020 was an interesting year, and it was one that Hemi Murray, his friends and family, discovered the true value of the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service. Hemi became a patient of the rescue helicopter service after a motocross accident left him fighting for his life. He says he is lucky to be alive after the horrific event that July. “What started out like any other fun day with a bunch of mates heading into a forest for a trail ride soon turned into a life-threatening situation,” says Hemi. “We were having a great time heading deeper into the forest. I was going down a straight when my wheel hit tree roots. Just like that, I lost control and slammed head-on into a tree. It all happened in a split second.” Other riders quickly went to Hemi’s aid while some went to find cell phone coverage to call for help. Hemi’s injuries included a shattered pelvis, broken ribs and a punctured lung. “My whole body hurt, and I had hundreds of injuries including a severed spleen, damaged adrenal glands, bruised kidneys and a pulverised liver. I was conscious and knew I had to calmly focus on my breathing, otherwise I would be worse off. Suddenly, I heard the hum of the rescue helicopter coming. Words

can not describe that feeling lying there and hearing the hum come closer — I have never been so thankful.” On arrival, a paramedic was winched down to the accident scene. “The team stabilised me and made a lot of medical decisions fast. My riding buddies helped put me onto the stretcher and moved me to a more open location to be winched back up to the chopper.” Hemi’s vital signs were low. “I was flown to Whangārei Hospital, and the helicopter waited on the roof while the hospital staff ran tests. Sure enough, I needed to get to Auckland Hospital and undergo surgery. I had suffered large blood loss, and my organs were really damaged. “It took a lot of effort to keep me alive on the second flight. I went through a myriad of surgeries and spent three weeks in Auckland Hospital. “It took another three weeks before I could move to rehabilitation, and I had to learn to walk and move again. “I am still recovering and know my survival is because of the great care I

Hearing that sound of the helicopter arriving was like angel wings. There is no doubt in my mind that if it weren’t for the rescue helicopter that day, I would have died. It is that simple.” To help keep the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service in the air, go to nest. org.nz/donate. ¢
