“Students and staff wore yellow and brought in donations for the Cancer Society,” says principal Sharlene McCormick. “The tamariki from Ruma Manuka ran a cake stall and sold yellow cakes and cupcakes to the tamariki and staff. The kai for the cake sale was made at Discovery Time on Thursday. Many tamariki, with the help of their teacher Hannah Taylor-Rose, were busy baking and decorating goodies for the cake sale. This proved to be a huge hit with students, and we are ecstatic to have raised $400 for the cancer society. “It was great seeing the students all running around in yellow. It gave our school a happy, spring feeling. On a sadder note, our school has been touched by the hardship cancer can bring to whānau and community. “As we move into spring and summer, the regularity of the misting will be increased to ensure the timber conditions remain stable. Our friends at Wet and Forget have supplied chemicals and applicators to ensure that the timbers don’t develop mould and rot while being maintained in a damp state. Our conservator, Susanne Rawson of HPFS Solutions, has completed the conservation plan, which will be used to guide how we preserve the metals and timbers of the Daring.
“It has been quite a project putting the Daring back together, as Bert says — ‘where does that bit go?’, as he unravels the puzzle. “We are thankful to everyone who is supporting us with our project.” ¢ p Tony Heath sorting through the original deck planks prior to refitting them p Builder Don Armitage with the model that he is making of the Daring

“As we work on the design, we are constantly considering the types of interactive spaces and displays we will need to include to ensure visitors can not just observe but interact with and experience the stories of the Daring. Our enthusiastic volunteer vessel reassembly team is making great progress. To differentiate added timbers from original timbers, macrocarpa beams have been beautifully crafted to replace the steel beams used to hold the vessel together when we lifted it from the beach. “These beams also support the decking and hatch timbers, which were recovered from the beach and from souvenir hunters, who have seen the value in reuniting them with the vessel. We are hopeful that more of these timbers will be returned.
“The key message within this report is that we need to get the Daring into a stable humidity and temperature controlled environment as soon as possible to be able to start the drying and preservation process. “That means finalising the Daring Discovery Centre site and the building design and build, and our trustees are working hard on this.
“As planned, we have recently changed the water sprinkling system to a fine misting system,” says Mangawhai Daring Trust chair Jim Wintle. “The mist system is proving very effective at reducing the surplus amount of retained moisture in the timbers and the bilge of the vessel.”
The team helping to preserve the vessel Daring at Mangawhai, Bert Sainsbury, Peter Joyce, Tony Heath and Dave Fredric, have made considerable progress on the project during the winter months.

A love of fishing u by Ann van Engelen The Waipū Boat and Fishing Club held its annual awards last Saturday, celebrating the many successful catches throughout the year, with club member Jill Reid and her grandchildren Lennox and Neve taking several awards on the night.
“Catching kingfish is my favourite, and as I don’t eat much fish but do enjoy smoking my own, I give lots to people who can’t get out there to get their own.

“It was an outstanding year of fishing for Jill, Lennox and Neve,” says club secretary Linda Glibbery. “Jill was the winner of both the Open and Ladies Angler of the Year titles. Lennox did a clean sweep of the junior categories, including Junior Angler of the Year, except for Heaviest Kahawai, which his sister Neve won.” Jill won the same two awards last year as “Iwell.grew up in Warkworth, and my mum used to take me fishing off the wharf at Sandspit,” says Jill. “I later lived in Wellsford for about 23 years before moving to Central Hawke’s Bay, where I had a horse stud. 6 Little things for little people u by Liz Clark At some point in life many adults settle down, buy or build a new home and then start a family. If you have children under five, then this one is for you. We all know children love to explore. As many parents learn, having eyes in the back of their heads becomes second nature, especially with toddlers. Keeping them safe in the garden while letting them explore and play can be challenging. Here are some ideas to try out and keep the little ones safe and entertained: Dig and play area If you don’t mind having a bare patch of soil in one corner of the garden, make an area for toy diggers, trucks, plastic digging tools and containers, which are a fun way for children to make their own miniature versions of earthworks. Add in a bit of water and some old playdough moulds to expand creative play. Alternatively, make a small sand pit for similar activities and some sandcastles. Don’t forget those buckets and spades or old plastic kitchenware you no longer need. Cover up the play areas when not in use with a piece of plywood or tarp to prevent pets from using the area as a toilet. Pet rock and seashell gardens Gather up some river stones or buy a small bag of them. Use non-toxic paint and encourage little ones and older children to decorate them, then make a special corner in the garden where they can be placed. Parents and grandparents can get involved and add their bit of colour to the collection. Another option is to use a wide, shallow pot with a drainage hole at the bottom. Place where more rocks can be added or swapped with friends. Gather pieces of driftwood and mark out a place for seashells collected from the beach during the summer holidays by the children. Patterns can be made of any shape or form, further encouraging imagination, creativity and fine motor skills. Sensory garden Using non-toxic plants, this is the place for children to touch, smell, hear, taste and see. Touch: lamb’s ear, succulents and snapdragons. Smell: sweetpeas, lavender and lemon balm. Hear: corn and grasses rustling against each other in the breeze. Taste: cherry tomatoes, strawberries, carrots, basil, sugar snap peas and rosemary. See: colourful flowers such as sunflowers, pansies, daffodils and red Swiss Chard. These are just a few ways to create a safe, fun environment for your children. Also, try a sensory table, a place for water play, a fairy garden or even one for your child’s favourite dinosaurs. The only limit is your imagination. For more ideas, look online at inspirational gardening sites. ¢

Viewing the outdoors as a room of the house is a tradition that goes back to the earliest days of civilisation. A book that was probably a scroll, when you think aboutShadeit. was of supreme importance under the Mediterranean sun, and with the Kiwi summers becoming hotter each year, it’s a life-saver here too. Like the pyramid builders of old, align your construction to match up with how the light will fall on those long summer afternoons. Hot days can still lead on to chilly nights, even when it’s high summer. In the courtyards of Roman, Greek and Egyptian villas, you’d always find a brazier for warmth, and modern versions of this trend are more stylish and functional than ever. “We have recently finished designing and testing a wind turbine. We have built a mobile wind turbine, and there is nothing else like it in the world,” MPU Electrical owner and inventor Jason Bennett says. The innovative turbine offers instant power without delay and produces electricity using air flow rather than wind velocity. It is a fully independent unit with battery storage, external power points and an in-built inverter. “We have been working with the local retail power company that has signed a distribution agreement to sell and install our wind turbines. It is significant for Northland.” The unit is expected to be available early next year. It is available through Platinum Power Limited, which has exclusive rights to sell and install the product. It has been a journey spanning 15 years. “It has finally come to fruition. The whole world is crying out for energy and especially in the form of renewable. It is good timing. “The wind turbines are not just for your farms — it is for grid energy as well. Platinum Power Limited will sell renewable energy throughout New Zealand effectively via the grid.” It is more cost-effective and versatile, with an output that can power four houses. The unit has a class B rating allowing it to operate at 7.5 metres a second in the wind with gusts up to 44 metres a second. “We are quite a bit cheaper than a conventional 100-metre horizontal access turbine. Ours is a vertical access turbine. We don’t have the height issues that are required with the big ones and the downtime because of the lack of moving parts.” Jason says it is suitable for remote locations where it can be difficult and expensive to obtain a power supply. “For example, up north, there is a lot of land that can take hundreds of metres to run a mains cable from the closest transformer or power pole. It becomes quite ineffective cost-wise.

“It can be dragged out to the outbacks of farms to run pumps and electric fencing. It is ideal on islands and any hard-to-get areas for energy. p MPU Electrical owner Jason Bennett has invented a portable wind turbine able to provide electricity for up to four houses suitable for rural and on-grid properties
Mobile Power Utilities Limited is a new Ruakākā-based electrical company about to become the manufacturer of mobile wind turbines and offers basic and commercial electrical services.
“To run a cable 400 metres becomes extremely costly. The price of the cable alone would be similarly priced to a whole wind turbine. That sort of situation is fantastic for installing this wind turbine.”
Jason says he plans to make a solar power addition to the mobile wind turbine to make it a hybrid for renewable energy. MPU is working on a larger wind turbine. “We are halfway through building a large wind turbine. It is significant in energy output, and there is nothing else like it in New Zealand.” ¢

Even when I left school, I would come home to the farm to get my animal fix on weekends and during my holidays. “I am married now with two teenage children, and my husband Kyle and I bought the family farm. We have a nurse cow beef herd, and we sell the calves when they are grown. Nurse cows are very motherly and feed their babies, plus others if need be. “A few years ago, I was at the Northland Field Days with our children, and I was having a very grumpy day due to sciatica. I saw a stand offering ConTact CARE — Flinchlock Release for $30 for 30 minutes, so I thought I would try it as I had nothing to lose.”
“I told them to take my money and try and do something, anything, as I was in so much pain, and it wasn’t a nice day for our children. I had such a huge reaction to the therapy that my mum drove us home. Flinchlock Release was created by Dale Speedy, a farmer in Ngātea, alongside five other farmers. Dale studied martial arts — Judo, then KiaidoRyu Karate to sixth dan master’s level.
u by Ann van Engelen Anna van Harlingen is a country girl through and through, and with an interest in helping people and animals, she now helps ease many health conditions by using Dale Speedy’s Flinchlock technique.
ConTact CARE stands for a Commonsense Approach to Real Ease. It is a system for locating and releasing trapped bone pressure.
“He developed his understanding of the body’s instinctive self-defence system and how it can be manipulated to either harm or heal, and the power of applied intention.

“ConTact CARE is not a science. It is a method developed based on the observation of natural principles in action and consciously recreating them in order to bring about a change of state.“Tolearn the technique can take up to three years, and it is exciting hearing positive changes people experience. I am still a student practitioner, and I am due to be fully qualified at the end of the year, so my fees reflect that at present.
“It is remarkably satisfying when you see a client receive help for something they have struggled with for a long time. I treated a person who had a terrible stoop and couldn’t stand upright. After several sessions, he could stand straight and now happily walks normally and can look people in the eye.
Animals get it straight away because they are in the moment, and as soon as they feel the pressure lift, they stretch, move and yawn.
“After two or three sessions, they meet me at my car and start yawning and stretching before I have got out because they know it is going to be nice.
“When I was on one of my courses, I was given an elderly incontinent spaniel to work on because they try to find impossible cases for us to experience. I worked on her, and the next day the owner told me that for the first time in a long time, her dog had gone outside and pooped on the grass. “Humans are fun because sometimes they say they honestly couldn’t tell I did anything in the session. They walked out thinking what was that all about and in about a month they realise they haven’t had their headache.
“Then they shake their body, reorganise themselves, and then come back and put the next sore spot in my hand. There are lots of different personalities. Sometimes a horse will walk away and hide behind a tree because they are shy and reserved, and they come out when I have gone and shake their body.
“It is an amazing thing to be able to help people. Some treatments appear miraculous, some individuals take time to heal, and for some, this path is not for them. Your best interest is my best interest. If I feel I cannot help, I will direct you to someone who possibly can.
“Once the flinchlock is gone — it is gone, but there are layers of injury to heal. We see people from all walks of life. They may have had a motorbike accident, be a farmer, a builder or sportsperson. Someone may have shoulder pain, and once that is released, the next layer to be released comes up over time. There is no one size fits all. “I love that it works on animals too. So I did the human and the equine programme and then the K9 course as well. It is an emotional experience when people realise there is help, but it is the animals that have instant gratitude.
p
“People can find me on Otamatea ConTact CARE Flinchlock Release Facebook page or call me on 027 464 8048. The national website contactcare. co.nz features Dale, so that people can read more about the history of his theories and other information.

“There is nothing better than seeing my human and animal clients getting joy again in their lives, and I love seeing the pain go from their faces over time.” Animals will often yawn when Anna has completed their treatment Animals of all shapes and sizes have been known to benefit from Anna’s work Anna can feel a flinchlock, because the bone is numb, heavy and dumb, whereas healthy bone springs back in her hand
“It doesn’t happen overnight because the body has to unravel itself, but in a week or so, you realise you don’t hurt in that spot anymore. Sometimes a flinchlock has been there for 20 years, so your body has a lot of work to do to work through it.
“Humans are fun because sometimes they say they honestly couldn’t tell I did anything in the session. They walked out thinking what was that all about and in about a month they realise they haven’t had their headache” sensible, and anyone can learn how to do it’. We work on a variety of issues, including unresolved Injuries, post-op rehabilitation, headaches, breathing disorders, sports injuries, carpal tunnel, coordination issues and pets, including“Anyoneequines.canfeel flinchlock because the bone is numb, heavy and dumb, whereas healthy bone will spring back in your hand. “We are a family team who have a lot of wonderful ideas and positive energy to bring the night market back to life,” says organiser Riana Waenga.
The Wellsford community is excited to be preparing to reignite the town’s much-loved fortnightly Friday night market.
Our first market is set for Friday, September 23, from 4pm until 8pm at the Wellsford Community Centre.
“The markets will be held every second and fourth Friday of each month.
“The night markets were going last year, but there was no one to take over after winter. My nan moved up, and we decided to reignite them because she has lots of market experience. “We want to utilise local growers and producers with vegetables, cheeses and other products. We hope to have vendors and small business owners from Wellsford and beyond come along. “We want to get people driving through town to stop and enjoy the local variety. We have Big D BBQ from Dargaville coming, and he has really well-priced meals, and his slow-cooked brisket is amazing.

I had responsibilities and loved it. I would watch her work her magic with the people who came and bought from her. It was amazing to see her interact and build relationships with the customers. “I was raised in Kaiwaka, and my mum is a Davies from Davies Road in Wellsford, so our family history and roots go deep back to the Albertlander days. I remember going with my great-grandpa Davies to the Wellsford saleyards, and everyone would meet for a cup of tea at the“Thatcanteen.was their weekly gathering, and they would trade food like fish, meat and vegetables while buying their stock, and it was always fun and exciting. It didn’t matter if the guy next to you wasn’t your family, and we want to bring that feeling back. “I would love to see that happen here so the Wellsford community can have that same experience. We have so much going on in our lives and so much technology that the sharing of stories and food is getting missed.
“We are still looking for stallholders and hope to have people from across Northland to come along.” For more information about being a stallholder, email riana.waenga1@gmail. com or go to the Wellsford Friday Night Market Facebook page. ¢ p Riana Waenga with her daughter Amelia, and Marianne Cattermole with nana Marlene and MacKenzie Cattermole are excited to organise the Wellsford Friday night market every two weeks a family, we are really excited for our first market as we will have four generations running it”
