The companies pleaded guilty to charges laid under the Resource Management Act for damaging two stream beds near Opotiki in a logging operation, which began in 2015. Whitikau Holdings was fined $57,000 and the logging companies $4,000 and $3,000 respectively. Forest Owners Association president, Peter Weir, is pointing to the judge’s comments that the action of the forest owner was ‘extremely reckless and bordered on deliberate’. “From the facts as I understand them, this is not a case where a storm overwhelmed a logging site, but where the offenders just did not care about the clear rules on how to avoid damaging river courses, ignored abatement notices and produced a consequence, which could take a decade to come right. “They got what they deserved. They were probably lucky to avoid jail.” The Farm Forestry Association president, Neil Cullen, is echoing Peter Weir’s warning to errant harvesting operators. “This court decision highlights that there are forest owners and contractors out there who are ignoring best practice guides and directions from councils in order to try to save money,” he said. “The New Zealand Farm Forestry Association is hopeful the penalties in this case, and the clear provisions of the National Environmental Standard for Plantation Forestry will force such operators to change their approach, and take a more responsible attitude when they are harvesting.” The CEO of the Forest Industry Contractors Association, Prue Younger, says she is disappointed that some are putting the industry into disrepute. “With the recent introduction of Contractor Certification and the new National Environmental Standard coming

Dairy cows are responsible for about a quarter of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the cost of supplying the world with dairy products. But it doesn’t have to be. Planting forests is an easy way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. An average dairy farmer could plant nearly two hectares a year in radiata pine to totally offset the gases their cows make. It wouldn’t even have to be on their own land.

into play, the industry is clearly standing behind best practice.” Peter Weir says the National Environmental Standard will raise the environment standard for all forest operations. “The NES represents the industry’s commitment to a set of legislative rules designed to reduce the effect of forestry earthworks, harvesting and other activities on the environment, including an effective reduction of planting for harvest on the most unstable terrain in New Zealand, now red zoned. “Compliance with the NES won’t be a big stretch for larger companies with robust environmental systems, but it will require smaller players to set up to meet its requirements. “The NES won’t stop the cowboy operators who, through carelessness, ruin streams, wetlands and our industry reputation, but it will mean that councils have a consistent rule-set and a clear mandate to protect the environment. Parts of the NES will become a template for other industries.”

Pea growing ban extended Extending the ban on growing peas in the Wairarapa for at least a further 12 months offers the best chance of ensuring pea weevil has been eradicated in the district. “After the 12 months, we can then review whether a continued total ban, partial restrictions or other measures will be the best option going forward, based on what the trap crops show us,” says Wairarapa Federated Farmers Arable chairperson, Karen Williams. The Pea Weevil Governance Group announced the continuance of the production ban to Wairarapa growers at a meeting in Masterton. Karen said while the growers naturally had lots of questions, the decision to continue the ban ‘was probably expected’ because pea weevil had been found this past growing season. “This announcement at least gives growers some certainty around making plans for the coming season.” The growing ban was initiated in July 2016 after pea weevil was found in a Masterton seed store. Nationwide surveys over the past two seasons have not found the weevil anywhere else in New Zealand. Trap crops in the Wairarapa caught 1,735 weevils in the first year of the ban across 11 different sites, and only 15 in year two on two sites. To prove that New Zealand is free of the destructive pest, which if it got a hold here could seriously affect the

nation’s pea growing and processing industries, there need to be two weevilfree years in the Wairarapa. “Growers were told on Tuesday there had been no alterations made to the Cabinet minutes approving ex gratia payments to eligible growers unable to plant peas, which has been taken as meaning such compensation will continue to be paid while the ban is in force,” said Karen. “The ban is no small issue in the Wairarapa, where peas had been a major

crop for decades, with growers building up considerable agronomy skill. Growers have been putting in more wheat and barley and some different crops, and trials of other crops are occurring, but none of these has reached a commercially successful stage like past pea crops. “If there are any seed companies keen to grow some alternative crops in the Wairarapa, and look outside the traditional focus on Canterbury, that would be a most welcome approach.”

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN MORGAN Situated near Mount Bruce in the foothills of the Tararua Ranges, and known for making some of the world’s best cheese, boutique cheesemaker Biddy Fraser-Davies from Cwmglyn Farmhouse uses handmade traditional methods to create her award winning delights.

“T

he name is pronounced Coom-glin and we have three Jersey cows producing our milk under the MPI raw milk approval scheme. The cows graze a mixed-herb organic pasture,” says Biddy. “My husband Colin and I have a single herringbone cowshed and make the cheese in our licensed, purpose-built cheese room. They live a stress-free life, and their contentment is obvious in the quality of their milk.” Cwmglyn cheese is made in the traditional English farmhouse style. “I used to stay on a friend’s 300-yearold farm near Tenterden in Kent, England as a child. They hand milked 12 cows — everybody was expected to help so at 11 years old I learned too. A few years ago our neighbour gave me a four-day-

old heifer Jersey calf because his other calves had been weaned, and the bobby truck had stopped coming. He was going to dispatch it, but his children said ‘ring Biddy, she’ll take her’ so that is how my farming career began.” Biddy called the calf Gwendolyn, and in her prime, she produced 40 litres a day. “Unfortunately, Fonterra don’t pick up milk from a herd of three cows and my cattle are great producers, so making cheese was the obvious solution,” says Biddy. “I am an artist enamellist and metalsmith, but the trouble is, my enamelled artwork will last 5,000 years, and milk has to be dealt with daily. “It can not be rushed or shortcircuited — the curd has to ripen, and

the pH fall for food safety because pathogenic material don’t cope with the acid environment.” A wheel of cheese takes up to 45 litres of milk and is matured for three to seven months. If you use milk from your own animals, farm assessments need to be made by MPI. Purchased milk has to be from an approved source and transported in a proper manner. “MPI has a programme for small production cheesemakers and only permits the making of hard cheese from heat-treated milk. I spent a year working with MPI while they developed the programme.” The cheese has to be tested for compositional content three times a year, and raw milk is laboratory tested every two months. This regime is for heat-treated hard cheese, and I make raw cheese, and the testing regime is considerably stricter for raw unpasteurised cheese. “Making safe-to-eat raw cheese is utterly dependent on the quality of the milk harvesting — meticulously washing and drying the udders and completing daily RMT paddle tests on every cow teat, before milking commences. “Farmhouse cheese is a cheddar style, and can ‘only’ be called a farmhouse or farmstead if it is made from milk produced on the same farm. “Our first award was a Bronze in the World Jersey Cheese Awards held on the island of Jersey. Then, I gained a Silver award in the World Cheese Awards held in England in 2013, and a ‘Super Gold Award’ in the World Cheese Awards in London in 2014, which meant Cwmglyn

I finish each cow by hand stripping the residual milk and get another 2–3 litres. Older cows have saggy udders and hand stripping helps with udder health. We have 4.4 hectares, and last year’s income, proportionally, was better than the milk solid Fonterra payout that my neighbour got from his several hundred cows. We make just

It has been said that 90 per cent of successful and safe cheesemaking is in the quality of the clean-up afterwards. “My favourite part of the process is eating it — raw milk creates a different flavour. We held a ‘Pop-Up’ cheese festival a couple of years ago, and we hope this will become an annual event for small cheesemakers here in

Eketahuna, and possibly move around to other areas. “This year the festival is on May 14, and we are expecting a lot of visitors. We will have guest speakers including a UK scientist, Dr Paul Neaves, who is a world authority on raw cheese, and colleague Jill Palmer. They are on the technical committee of the UK Specialist Cheesemakers Association. It is a huge event for a small town and it will be held at the community centre — we are excited to share our love of cheese with others.”

riginally Cheryl started out with an idea to keep the sheep that originated in Denmark from extinction, whilst keeping the family farm operating profitably. That idea grew into a family business that begins out in the paddock and ends in highend fashion stores and on blockbuster cinema screens.

“We are proud of things that are 100 per cent from New Zealand and have been doing it for 30 years now,” says Cheryl. The farm is medium to steep hill country with lots of retired bush on the east coast — six kilometres from the ocean. “Barry is now semi-retired and our son helps me manage the farm, along with a stockman. starts with the stock — through to the shearers, wool classing and the artisans that create the textiles and the end products. “It is a lovely New Zealand story and other farmers need to know there are great wools out there that we need to use. Our products are chemical free, and I have recently expanded into eco-fashi on and we are looking at ecotourism.” Cheryl’s designs are exported across the world and even the royal, Princess Charlotte in the United Kingdom, is a fan. Stansborough is recognised on the world stage for its quality, originality and creativity in designer textiles, offering a diverse selection of unisex accessories, home interiors, authentic movie costume pieces and baby wear. “With our amazing team we create bespoke designs — it is what we do well — we often produce limited collections specifically for clients, as mass producers can’t do this. “Many New Zealanders have some wonderful little stories, but like us, are flat tack all the time and don’t get to tell them. Our family are also protective of our creations and our copyright as well — you have to be.” Stansborough has a team of 10 staff at the mill based in Wellington, plus others on the farm when necessary, and the shearing gangs. “It’s a dedicated team effort — on the station we run low stock numbers and also are involved in honey production, subtropicals and are considering ecotourism for diversification. Cheryl and Barry have spent many years strengthening their flock of ‘Stansborough Grey’ sheep

grey sheep in Nelson, which had been brought to New Zealand from Sweden 20 years prior. The elegant, fine-boned breed were traditionally farmed for their pelts and not particularly sought after in the pragmatic south for their wool. “The flock of sheep are now called ‘Stansborough Grey’ and in early 1990 they were dumped due to the share market crash, and when I found them I brought a core of 400 sheep plus all the embryos and semen that were with them. “I found embryologist Trevor Cook from Feilding, who had worked with them when first brought out to New Zealand. He has been with us all the way through, as we have strengthened the breed. “We have a ‘closed’ flock and our embryos and semen ‘Stansborough Grey’ is registered with the New Zealand Sheep Breeders Association. We don’t sell our genetics and don’t buy any in,

as our breed is specific to the wool type we need.” Other coloured wool doesn’t have the same criteria, but Cheryl says that does not mean they are inferior in any way. “Ours are bred as a wool sheep for our particular textile production — we are a little different as not many people do it right through like us.” The sheep historically originate from an island off the coast of Sweden — their unique grey fleeces were perhaps adapted to keep out the keen north wind, which scours this cold land. The wool was utilised by the Vikings for making the sails for their medieval longships. “Barry and I developed, and strengthened the traits that led to the

finer, soft and lustrous ‘Stansborough Grey’ fleeces we have today,” says Cheryl. “Our aim was to develop a fibre suitable for spinning into worsted fabric. The line of sheep has been kept pure and it took 12 years to create what is now a flock of 1,300 animals — now a unique registered breed in their own right, and the only flock of its kind in the world. “We also farm a herd of 80 alpacas, have forestry plantations and have created native bush reserves, to cancel out our carbon footprint and we produce high-quality UMF honey on the property.” To read more about Stansborough Station check out next month’s Farming Lifestyles newspaper.

Better home and living Healthy homes for Winter Keeping your home warm and dry in winter can seem like a neverending battle if you aren’t prepared. However, there are some easy ways to make sure you and your family can stay healthy during the cooler months. The first step to making sure your home is warm and dry, no matter the weather, is installing good-quality insulation. You can put this in the roof, walls and even under the floor. The initial expense might be offputting to some, but it pays to look into applying for grants through Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes for lowincome owner-occupiers and tenants. An added bonus, is that you will find heating your house is much cheaper as well, after insulation has been installed. It can be difficult to check if your home has wall insulation installed already or not, so if you ever have to do any renovations it is helpful to take the opportunity to check this out too. The World Health Organisation recommends

that houses should be kept around 18 C or higher for homes with elderly, the ill or children. A big part of keeping a house warm is deciding what kind of heating is suitable. If you want to heat a large room, an energy-efficient fixed heater might be a good option or, if possible, a fireplace. This could be a modern wood or woodpellet burner, an energy-efficient heat pump, or a four-star flued gas heater. An electric heater might be perfectly acceptable for a smaller room or rooms you only heat on occasion, as the initial price is low, but the long-term cost is significantly higher. Keeping your home dry, plays a big part in managing a healthy home. Eliminating dampness can be as simple

DUCK SHOOTING Get a licence The 2018 game bird season opened throughout the country on Saturday, May 5 with optimistic forecasts from many regions. Amid predictions of a good duck hunting season, game bird hunters are encouraged to abandon their usual habit of buying a hunting licence at the last minute. In the North Island, Fish & Game’s Auckland/Waikato, Eastern and Wellington regions say there are good duck populations; with Wellington predicting ‘a cracker of a season’. In the South Island, the traditional duck hunting regions are holding good numbers after a great breeding season over the summer months. Fish & Game says anyone hoping to put a wild duck dinner on the table needs to have a game bird hunting licence. “Hunters are notorious for leaving their licence purchase to the last minute. Unfortunately, that can mean long queues of hunters at sports shops waiting to buy their licence,” says Fish & Game New Zealand’s policy manager, Robert Sowman. “The easiest way is to go onto the Fish & Game website and buy online. The new website is very mobile phone friendly, so you can buy without having to queue.”

Hunters are also being advised to make sure they familiarise themselves with the hunting rules for the region they are planning to hunt in. “The rules are different depending on which region you are hunting in, so you need to read the regulation book you get when buying a licence. A couple of minutes familiarising yourself with the rules is time well spent as breaking them could well land you in court,” he says. Robert Sowman points out that everyone buying a hunting licence is helping improve wildlife habitat. “For a licence to be valid, it must display a habitat stamp. The money raised from stamp sales goes toward protecting and saving wetlands,” Mr Sowman says. “These places are fast disappearing so saving them provides great habitat for native birds and fish, as well as game birds. “The best bit is you don’t have to be a hunter to buy one. If you care about saving wildlife habitat, then buy a habitat stamp safe in the knowledge that the money helps fund

many worth environmental projects.” If you successfully harvest a duck with a band on its leg this information is crucial to research. Please fill out the form on the Fish & Game NZ website and post your band details to: Fish & Game, Private Bag 3010, Rotorua 3046

or the National Banding Office, PO Box 108, Wellington 6140 before August 31. The 2018 game bird season runs until Sunday, August 26. For individual area bag limits and other information consult the fishandgame. org.nz website.

SIMPLICITY

The success of the award winning Clean Green Effluent System has been its simplicity. We start by filtering out the solids through a patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash. This fresh green water is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total fresh water consumption to

about 20lt/cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/day. As we are now only using 20lt/ cow we only have to deal with 20lt/cow per day for storage and distribution to land. The Clean Green Effluent System has a unique distribution system that was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25 mm or ¼mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems. The super low application depth allows for

application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity. As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round, the storage requirement is minimal. The Clean Green Effluent System utilises 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage to exceed the requirement of the Massey University Pond Calculator. Comprehensive research over the past ten years is looking positive for the Clean Green Effluent Company System. Testing has indicated that the super low application system will cause no environmental ill

effects even in the winter. The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall liquid farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year. This liquid has to be dealt with via your distribution system. Rainwater contribution in open ponds can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairyshed. The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem free effluent system.

Benefits of the system • Small foot print • No storage ponds • Fully automated • 0.25mm application/24hrs • Low man hours to maintain • Low running costs • 60% fresh water savings • Fully patented system • Environmentally friendly

Brexit representative in London Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association have appointed Jeff Grant to support the red meat sector’s response to Brexit. Mr Grant will be based in London, and will work closely with B+LNZ’s Europe representative, the New Zealand Government and commercial interests to help strengthen the red meat sector’s ties with the United Kingdom and safeguard New Zealand’s exports to the key market. “Jeff is highly experienced and has been involved in the red meat sector for more than 25 years, so brings with him expertise and strategic skills that will be crucial over the next two years in dealing with the implications of Brexit,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand chairman, Andrew Morrison. “As a sheep, beef and deer farmer himself with properties at Balfour and Otama Valley in Southland, Jeff understands the importance of trade to the sector.” B+LNZ and MIA, with financial support from AGMARDT, will jointly fund the additional resource. Meat Industry Association chairman, John Loughlin, says Brexit is one of the biggest challenges to face the sector in recent years and it is crucial New Zealand is no worse off as a result of the change. “Jeff will play a crucial role in the overall NZ Inc effort to build and maintain our relationships in the UK,

secure our national interests and dispel the misconceptions about our sector and exports.” Mr Grant has had a number of different roles over the years, including being elected as a Member of Parliament in 1987, where he served two terms, including the role of Senior Whip, in the National Government from 1990 until 1993, when he retired. Since 1994, he has been predominantly involved as a director or trustee of organisations and companies including Landcorp, Wrightson, and Beef + Lamb New Zealand. He has also been chairman of ten organisations including Meat and Wool NZ, the New Zealand Meat Board, the Meat Research and Development Council, AGMARDT, Invest South and Wool Partners Co-op. Most recently he has been chairman of AgResearch, Mount Linton Station, OSPRI, Milford Sound Tourism, Southland Shared Services and a Director of SBS Bank, Finance Now Ltd, NZ Young Farmers, and Predator Free 2050 Ltd. He will be active in the role from around mid-year and will work closely with Beef + Lamb New Zealand regional manager, Ben O’Brien, who is based in Brussels.

Everybody is in the SUV business these days — from Bentley’s massive, country house proportioned Bentaygo, with its emphasis on luxury, to Lamborghini’s Urus, which promises velocity. The dizzying array of choices has spawned another subspecies, which is definitely worth a look — the stylish, yet still determinedly practical upmarket off-roader. These are examples by companies, who approach the sports utility concept from its roots. In fact, both of the top examples in this field come from marques, which began in the mud and thunder of warfare — Jeep and Range Rover. Tracing their history back to fighting 4x4s, both the new Jeep Compass and the Range Rover Velar have come a long way, switching their fatigues for a stylishly cut suit in the case of the English offering, and the calculated designer ruggedness of a modern outdoorsman for the Jeep. The Jeep takes the lead, in terms of blue-collar pricing and built-in ruggedness, with the Trailhawk variant boasting all the hallmarks of a brand forged on trails like the challenging Rubicon. Its 2.4 litre Tigershark series petrol engine delivers 229 Nm of torque to the ground via the tried and tested Jeep Active Drive Low system — and no less than nine gears in a smooth automatic transmission. This is no school run faux-wheeldrive — underbody skid plates, red competition style tow hooks, hill descent control and even a rock crawling mode, make this the kind of machine that doesn’t understand the concept of getting stuck. At the same time, the

2018 Jeep Compass

cabin is a leather-wrapped cocoon of calm, and while the Grand Cherokee heads up the range for luxury, this middle-sized contender provides plenty of space, plenty of comfort and real offroad chops. Of course, the Range Rover Velar is also the middle child of the family, weighing in below the formidable Sport and above the Evoque. It’s a study in

Photo: jeep.co.nz

style, looking jaw-dropping from every angle, but there’s been no compromise on power — a V6 under the hood delivers better fuel economy and lower emissions too. While the cabin is appointed with luxurious leather and suede, unobtrusive infotainment and climate-controlled hush, outside this machine can tackle more than just the gravel driveway of

a stately home. With 21cm of ground clearance, a 24 degree breakover and 30 degree departure angle, along with electronically intelligent four-wheel drive controlling the differentials, the Velar can go pretty much anywhere it likes. Very clever electronic air suspension works behind the scenes to keep all four wheels planted, and delivering power where it’s needed.

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

Choppers are vital Federated Farmers believe saving lives is more important than saving dollars, and president, Katie Milne, says that should be reflected in decisions about the nation’s rescue helicopter services. Existing Te Anau, Taupo/Rotorua and Coromandel rescue chopper services are missing from a list of bases proposed under new larger area contracts, put out by the National Ambulance Sector Office. Rescue helicopters are generally funded 50 per cent by government and 50 per cent by the community through sponsorship and donations. NASO says the current model is financially unsustainable long-term and wants all rescue choppers to be twin-engined. “We saw around 500 people join a protest rally over the threat to the Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter in Rotorua. Locals were rightly concerned about the big coverage hole that would be left in the central North Island if rescue choppers only fly out of Hamilton and Tauranga,” said Katie. “Feeling is also running high in Te Anau, Fiordland and Haast over the idea that a future service run out of Queenstown only will be sufficient. That adds 20–25 minutes of flight time when we know every minute counts in the so-called ‘golden hour’ after a serious accident or emergency, and that is assuming the weather is playing ball, and a helicopter can get up and over the mountains.” The current service out of Te Anau includes pilot, Sir Richard Hayes, who has 40 years’ flying experience.

“Local knowledge of terrain and conditions can be absolutely vital when the search is on for an injured farmer, road smash victim or hypothermic tramper,” Katie says. “Local pilots are in a much better position to interpret garbled location details like ‘up the forked road past the old pub by that forestry that’s just been milled’.” Katie is a volunteer with her local fire brigade and has been involved in helicopter rescues where, without a handy local machine, with a pilot that knows the area, the outcome would have been very different. “I understand why twin-engined choppers might be desirable, but the fact is, when you are bleeding out in a ravine somewhere, you will bless your fortune to see any helicopter. It is about the speed of the service, whether the pilot can find you, and whether he or she can manoeuvre the chopper into where you are. “Investment saves lives and dollars, never mind preventing the grief that comes with a fatality. We owe it to those who live and work or visit as tourists and recreationalists, the more remote parts of our country to have local rescue chopper services that are fast and efficient,” Katie says.

Understanding osteoarthritis by John Arts

My recent seminars included detailed discussion on osteoarthritis (OA) and the many things we can do to help. My introductory point was: that it is important to see osteoarthritis as a true disease process, rather than just wear and tear. An excellent research paper (Yudoh et.al, Arthritis Research Therapy 2005) took a detailed look at the processes that cause OA. In particular, they studied the chondrocyte cells that maintain and repair cartilage. What they found was that chondrocytes are very susceptible to damage by free radicals. While free radical production is a completely normal part of our energy metabolism if these are unchecked by antioxidants, cells can become damaged and eventually die. The researchers found that over time, free radicals damage chondrocytes to the point that they die. Once this happens, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will break down. Eventually this leads to loss of cartilage and subsequent narrowing of the spaces between bones. More recent research confirmed that accidental damage to joints, triggers the same destructive process. Physical injury to joints increases free radical activity, which damages

STUMPCHIPPING & MULCHING

chondrocytes leading to cartilage loss. Mature chondrocytes have limited ability to reproduce. This is why death of chondrocytes is central to cartilage loss in arthritis. Any successful treatment must address the real cause, which is adding the antioxidants that can neutralise the free radicals that damage joints. One of my clients had diagnosed OA in his spine, but unfortunately could no longer tolerate antiinflammatory medication. I firstly put him on my multimineral/multiantioxidant and double doses of my high chondroitin joint formula. Within three months the back pain had largely gone and was much more comfortable.
