Please do not grow pea plants, sow pea seeds or use pea straw. A Controlled Area Notice is still in place for the Wairarapa region. The number of pea weevil has decreased in the Wairarapa but they haven’t been eradicated completely. The pea weevil only feeds on peas so if we remove their food, they’ll die out.

From October 1, 2018 the levy for sheepmeat will increase 10 cents to 70 cents a head and the beef levy by 80 cents to $5.20 a head. The additional levies will be invested in accelerating four key programmes: the international activation of the Taste Pure Nature origin brand and the Red Meat Story, helping the sector lift its environmental performance and reputation, telling the farmer story better, and strengthening B+LNZ’s capability to address biosecurity risks. “There was clear support for the levy proposal with almost 63 per cent of respondents backing an increase,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s chairman, Andrew Morrison. “Almost two-thirds of respondents indicated support for the strategic direction of B+LNZ, which is an encouraging message from farmers.” Along with the indications of support for the levy proposal and the priority areas the additional investment would support, farmers also provided valuable feedback about B+LNZ more generally. “Farmers showed widespread support for the Taste Pure Nature origin brand and the organisation’s

For Kai Schubert, grapes are like people. Those who sail through life in perfect conditions are OK, but not particularly interesting he says. Those raised in extremely harsh conditions may wither and die — but those with the right balance of the two, are the most experienced and complex.

ai and his partner Marion Deimling met at Geisenheim University whilst studying viticulture and oenology in Germany and travelled the world, sometimes separately, sometimes together, with the idea of setting up a vineyard to produce their own pinot noir. Eventually, they came to Wairarapa and fell in love with the place and the wine it produced. In spring of 1998, they acquired a small established vineyard in Martinborough and a block of 40 hectares of bare land in East Taratahi, followed by plantings in 1999 and 2000. Kai was interested in wine from an early age despite not coming from a wine-growing family. “I remember going on a school trip when I was 16 years old, the legal drinking age in Germany for wine and beer, and buying my first bottle of wine with lunch.”

From then on Kai was hooked and started reading a lot of books about wine. “Friends of mine bought their first motorbikes whilst I bought bottles of wine, some of which I still have in the cellar back in my old home. They have increased in value over time, so it was probably the better investment.” Kai wanted to become a film director and saw wine as a hobby at first; however, when he finished school, he began to think his chances of making it big in Hollywood were numbered. “One day I had an epiphany and decided to make my hobby a career. I started working for a local winery just helping out, and then I did an apprenticeship — always with the longterm plan to start my own vineyard.” Having worked with winemakers in Germany as well as in various vineyards across the world, their dream had always been to plant and produce their true

passion — pinot noir. After travelling through regions like Oregon, California, Australia and parts of Europe, it wasn't until arriving in Martinborough in the Wairarapa province of New Zealand that Kai and Marion felt they had found what they were looking for. In Martinborough the couple discovered that it didn’t matter which winery they went to, all the pinots were of high quality. “It showed us there must be something special with the soil as they all made good wine. Vineyards with naturally low yields equal concentration in flavour — if you have bad grapes you

will never turn them into good wine.” Martinborough is known for having extreme temperatures between the day and night. “This is beneficial for grape varieties and allows the grapes to keep an acidity structure that is just right. You lose the finesse, fruitiness and acidity structure in too warm climates and the grapes don’t ripen if it is too cold. “To be in exactly the right climate creates an elegant wine and the Wairarapa is just the right combination.” Marion takes care of the winemaking and Kai looks after

the marketing side of things. “It is important to market the wine because we can’t drink it all ourselves,” Kai jokes. With New Zealand having only about four million people it is important to look at export markets. Even so, we are only a small business — we now export about 85 per cent of our wines to currently 40 markets. “Wine is about variety and one lifetime is too short to try all the wines out there, so life never gets boring. An exciting good partnership in life and also in the business it has worked well for Schubert Wines.”

Guy Farman was given work experience in forestry when he was a young man, and that opportunity turned into a passion for a successful career and giving other young people the same chance he was given.

A

s the owner of Farman Turkington Forestry, Guy works alongside students participating in the Gateway programme in Masterton and is very positive about educating them in forestry. His company works mainly with smaller woodlots and forests in the Wairarapa area. “I love the industry as the people are great, there’s lots of variety and knowing that you can grow something that can be used for so many different purposes is exciting,” says Guy. “Most of our work is harvesting woodlots — if someone has trees on their farm they want harvested, we assess the trees’ value and determine where we are going to sell the logs whether it be to a sawmill or export

it to China. We also need to work out what machinery is required to harvest the forest and also work out how we will access the forest as often a road needs to be built to the forest edge. “Guys and girls are both involved in the industry, and there is a massive variety. There are many career paths from forest management, nursery work, pruning, harvesting, truck driving, roading engineering and earthworks, environmental, training, health and safety all the way through to wood manufacturing — the list goes on.” When students go out with Guy, he explains how a tree grows from a seedling, its cycle of life and why a forest is grown in a certain way. “They are taught growth patterns, different log grades and the different

These need to be built to hold the weight of loaded trucks and designed to allow them to make it up a hill without getting stuck, so the slopes need to be accurate.” Once designed, the students return in a few months and see the completed road they helped create. “They experience everything in the harvesting operation and learn what the different machinery is used for. They are taken to the sawmills to see the wood manufacturing side of the industry and are shown around the timber merchants and building sites, so they see where all the products end up from the forest. It is pretty cool for the students seeing the whole cycle.” The students also learn to fly the drone to look at forest blocks, particularly after harvesting because you can see if the streams and fence lines are clear of debris, branches and trees. “Technology is really coming into play now, and flying a drone around is great fun too,” says Guy. “Health and safety is obviously huge for us, and the culture has really changed for the better over the last five to six years. There is a lot of emphasis on personal and team safety, and there is improved communication between everyone. “People are encouraged to speak openly, and their concerns are taken seriously. NEW LEASE OF LIFE by Denise Gunn

When a 12-year-old heading dog named Tod arrived at Tararua Vets in Pahiatua for his final visit, he gave vet nurse Natalie Smith a look like he wasn’t ready to go. Natalie called his owners and arranged a retirement home for Tod. Six years later, Natalie has rehomed retired working dogs all over the country through Retired Working Dogs (RWD) NZ.

“W

e help farmers find retirement homes for their dogs after all those years of hard work,” said Natalie. “We also rehome the young ‘failed’ dogs; those who are a bit soft for the job, and we get quite a few working breed pet dogs through as well.” Farmers contact RWD through the organisation’s Facebook page facebook. com/Retired.WorkingDogs or website retiredworkingdogs.org.nz. The dogs that can stay on-farm until they have found a new home are then advertised on behalf of the farmers. Natalie says it’s then up to the farmer to decide where the dog will go.

“Sometimes we have dogs that need to be off-farm for whatever reason, and so we take them into foster care.” The dogs are desexed, vaccinated and socialised before advertising begins. Dogs are also often referred to RWD through veterinary clinics. These dogs tend to have sustained careerending injuries. “We take these dogs into foster and have the surgeries done, and then rehome them.” Pounds, the SPCA and other rescue agencies refer dogs too. “People also contact us looking for dogs, so we advertise for them as well.” Dogs have been taken in from Northland to Otago. 2

All potential new owners are met and their properties inspected. Dogs go out on trial and if it doesn’t work out, they are returned to RWD. A team of fosterers, located from Martinborough to Ohakune, play a critical role behind the scenes to help the dogs. “Fosterers are so important,” said Natalie. “They take the dogs in and teach them how to be pets. As most of the dogs have never been inside previously, they need to learn about cats, children and sleeping inside. The fosterers take the dogs to vet appointments and to meet prospective, new owners. Natalie said one of the fosterers is a sheep and beef farmer. “This is brilliant because when we get dogs from the pound, they go up there so we can learn whether they want to go to a working home or a pet home.” Philip Cox has been fostering working dogs for the past six years. He and his wife Karen live in rural Wairarapa, surrounded by farmland, river and hills. Philip said they foster dogs to give them a second chance after coming off the farm. When a dog arrives on the property, the couple tries to establish a routine around sleeping and feeding. “It’s important that it has a safe space and it isn’t threatened. Once you see their confidence increase, you can move forward with walks and socialising.” Philip says involvement with RWD has taught them much about dogs and people. “When you see the way some dogs have been treated, your heart goes out

to them, and it’s so important to give them a safe place.” Manawatu-based Vicki Lim has had a soft spot for working dogs after meeting them in her capacity as a veterinary student. She has since fostered eight dogs. “They’re intelligent and affectionate and are able to match your lifestyle really well,” she said. “They tend to be very well-behaved and willing to please, which makes them really trainable. “We’re extremely proud to be able to give these awesome dogs a loving home after years of hard work. “Doing this, we prevent the dogs from getting put down, and allow people to have some amazing companions for the rest of their days.” Natalie also fosters dogs and helps coordinate the foster network, assists with decision-making, and does some administration work for RWD. “There’s a whole team of people working behind the scenes on the day-today running and fundraising,” she said. “There’s a lot of transport involved too. Either we transport them, or they’re collected. Sometimes we’ll put a post up if it’s a long way and there are fantastic people out there who will offer to deliver dogs on their way somewhere.” Natalie works as a farm rep for Royal Canin, travelling all over the North Island allowing her to pick up and drop off dogs on her travels. “They’ve been brilliant and are our primary food sponsor. All our foster dogs are fed by Royal Canin, which is incredible.”

Totally Vets in Feilding, Tararua Vets in Pahiatua, Bayer Animal Health and Avalon Marketing and Website Design are also supporters of RWD. “This wouldn’t be possible without their awesome support, and the fantastic people in the community who take in these dogs and give them the retirement they deserve,” said Natalie. “And of course, the incredible team behind the scenes who help save lives every day.”

Natalie said RWD has almost been finalised as a charitable trust and there are several fundraising plans in the pipeline, including a public dog walk. “We are always looking for new foster homes in the lower North Island if anyone is interested.” RWD would also like to have a centralised location for foster dogs to go. “One day we hope to have a base so we can take more of them into care.”

Helping sore joints

by John Arts

At any given time I am helping hundreds of people improve their joint health. My goal is to help prevent further cartilage loss, reduce inflammation and improve the function of the joint. In most cases, we can get significant improvements in joint comfort and mobility. I have one client who was referred to an orthopaedic specialist with suspected OA in his left knee. It was sore, stiff and swollen. He had X-rays, which confirmed that there was significant cartilage loss and changes to the bones of the joint. His right knee caused him no problems, but the specialist decided to X-ray that one as well. What he found was that arthritis in his ‘good’ right knee had more cartilage loss than the sore one. You would wonder how that could be. How can moderate arthritis cause significant pain while the worst knee did not? The answer is probably inflammation. The sore knee was obviously inflamed. It was swollen (puffy), stiff and very sore. The more degenerated right knee had no swelling and no pain. After a few months, his sore knee is much improved. The body can be quite cynical at times. The normal way damaged tissue is healed is through initiating the process of inflammation. In simple

terms, blood vessels allow more fluid into the damaged area — it causes swelling and pain. I have found that OA symptoms are caused as much by inflammation than actual cartilage loss. The first step is to reduce inflammation. We do this by adding omega-3 from oily fish and antiinflammatory antioxidants especially curcumin from turmeric. The second thing is to add therapeutic amounts of chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine sulphate to stabilise cartilage. Chondroitin is most important as it is an actual constituent of cartilage but only at levels of 800mg plus daily. Initially, I like to target 1,500mg to help get faster results. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Time to get a prostate check

It’s Blue September again, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation is getting the message out to Kiwi men to get checked for prostate cancer.

Research shows that rural men in New Zealand are not good at getting checked. That needs to change. Early detection is the key. With one in eight men getting prostate cancer, diagnosing the disease early and getting effective treatment saves lives. That’s the central message this Blue September. Don’t wait for symptoms. A recent survey has shown that 61% of men diagnosed had no symptoms, so getting a routine check is very important. Farmlands has joined the fight against prostate cancer this year as Blue September sponsors along with AGPAC supplying blue silage wrap. Up and down the country people are organising Blue Dos. Farmers, tradies, workmates and radio hosts are all getting in on the act. You can check out the website for upcoming events and get ideas for your own Blue Do. Perhaps you fancy a blue breakfast, a blue BBQ or a blueberry bake-off? Or organise a Blue

Friday like many workplaces organise. It gets people involved in dressing up, preparing some novelty food and focusses on awareness of the number one cancer in Kiwi men. More than 600 die from it every year. It doesn’t need to be that way. Jason Gunn has joined the great team of Blue September Ambassadors — he tells how his Dad was diagnosed with the disease and how hard it was to talk about it, and what the prospects might be. Fortunately for them — the outcome was good. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. Find out more information and register for a Blue Do at blueseptember.org.nz.

QUAD BIKE SAFETY Concentrate on the riding. Look where you’re going, not where the stock are going.

This Blue September, join me in the fight against prostate cancer Whether you go little or large, it’s time to get your blue on for Blue September. This year, we’re asking you to get together and have a Blue Do – that’s right, a Blue Do – to help fund the fight against prostate cancer. The only question is… how blue will you do?

The Employment Relations Amendment bill

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES  August 2018

by Alastair Scott, MP for Wairarapa

New Zealand business confidence is falling. The Producer Price Index figures released last week show business input costs are rising. Faced with a squeeze, businesses have to raise their own prices, hire fewer workers or cut investment. The government’s anti-growth policies are starting to do real harm. The main business concerns stem from Labour’s plan to wind back the clock on industrial relations, to strengthen the unions and pit employers against employees. The government’s proposed Employment Relations Amendment bill contains 14 changes, which will add further costs to businesses. Labour admits this law is to strengthen ‘union rights’ for ‘union members’. It totally ignores the vast majority (82.3%) of New Zealand workers who do not belong to a union. The proposed legislation will significantly increase compliance costs, reducing business confidence to employ new staff, lift wages or invest for future growth. Some of the idiotic changes include detail around rest and meal breaks and the scrapping of the 90 day trial periods for all except small businesses. In an environment of record job growth over the previous 10 years, they make no sense for the New Zealand economy, employers or the 82 per cent of New

Zealand workers who do not belong to a union. It smells like a pay-off for Labour’s union support at the election. Business needs the certainty of sensible, consistent economic policies that encourage them to grow. The government have downplayed the significance of slumping business confidence, but as BusinessNZ observes, there is now ‘indisputable evidence’ falling confidence is impacting actual activity. It is naive for the government to say companies are profitable enough

to cope with policies that are slowing the economy and driving up costs. In the real world, employers must juggle priorities and make difficult decisions that affect workers and investment. I believe that a growing economy means more jobs, higher incomes and more revenue to pay for things the country needs. Without growth, the argument becomes how we split our current ‘pie’ amongst ever-growing demands. We have to grow the pie.

TerraTrencher a big hit A Kiwi-designed portable trencher is proving very popular with fibre-optic cable installers both in New Zealand and in numerous overseas countries. Originally called a Terrasaw and targeted at farmers, it became popular with irrigation installers and more recently with crews installing cable. “Many countries presently have huge multibillion-dollar fibre broadband installations underway, creating demand for an efficient, tidy way to bury small diameter cable and conduit,” says director Keith Fergusson. “The TerraTrencher is a power trencher you can pick up in one hand and transport in the boot of a car. The neat, narrow 40mm wide trench is perfect for burying data lines, water

lines, electric fence cable under gates and power.” Driven by a high-quality powerhead, it is a rugged and versatile power tool that has unique advantages, especially where access is limited. “Many homeowners and municipal authorities want as little disturbance to their quality turf as possible. “Because a TerraTrencher removes so little soil, it is very easy to reinstate

a lawn after trenching is completed,” says Keith. “A large percentage of New Zealand broadband installation crews now use this technology. One of the big drawcards is the dramatic saving in time. We regularly see customers who can now complete a trench in as little as one-tenth of the time previously taken, with much less physical effort. It is also one of the most affordable trenchers you can buy. “We have customers where the product had completely paid for itself in the first three weeks of use. “The most popular model is the TT500. It can dig to a depth of around 500mm, while the TT800 digs more than 600mm deep and is typically used to bury electric cable and transplant trees.” For more information contact Terrasaw Industries Ltd at terrasaw.co.nz or phone 09 431 6400.

Landscaping with thought When landscaping a property, good plant placement and choices enhance your home, making it more attractive and comfortable for yourself as well native birds and bees. Your decisions can affect how much enjoyment you get from your outdoor living areas so think about your site as a whole and have a clear idea of what you use the outdoor area for such as entertaining, playing, growing fruit and vegetables or space for pets. Your design will be a determining factor in the amount of effort you need to spend watering and maintaining the area. Soil type, house placement, waterways, climate and how much sun and shade you have helps determine what and where to plant. Too much shade from plants in winter might make your home cold and damp; however, planting certain plants in full sun may not be good for them. Knowing the mature size of trees and shrubs you may include in your project is important. Trees and shrubs can create screens between your home and neighbourhood or road noise to lower noise levels creating a healthier mood for all to enjoy. Planting to protect against erosion is beneficial if your site is near a stream or on the coast. Trees also provide some protection against stormwater erosion and reducing run-off, whilst their root networks hold the soil together. Your local or regional council often has lists of suitable plants for your area and nurseries also have a variety of information and options available. Talk to your neighbours and see what works for them. If you choose plants that are suitable for local conditions, your

RURAL CONTRACTORS

Great fence, man! by Jill Dickie

There is not much better to a farmer’s eye than looking down a straight fence line, all the posts in perfect position, no tops poking one way or another, and all the same height. A simple feat to achieve? Not if your fencing contractor doesn’t have the skills! It’s important to choose someone who will do the job you want done. You need to be specific about your needs, and these needs may vary depending on the location of the fence. For example, a new fence along your driveway, or that is visible every time you look out your house window; you are going to want that completely perfect, compared to a short length down on the back boundary that you mostly look at from the paddock as opposed to down the line. You will need to establish with your contractor whether they are supplying all materials for a complete job, or whether they will use items you already have available, which would save you money on the job. If you already have a box of fencing staples in the shed or three to four rolls of clean wire — there is no point in them supplying those for the job. Next, are they collecting the required materials

and bringing to the job or is it feasible for you to provide what they need? It may be another cost saver for you. Arranging payment terms is another consideration. Do they require some of the payment up front to purchase posts, or will they invoice you the total amount at completion? Will that payment be required within seven days or on 20th of next month? One more thing to think about — does your neighbour need any work done? It could be worth asking, particularly if either of you only have a small job needing done, as it may save the contractor some running around with their post driver! When the job is complete, and you can cast an eye down that tidy new fence, you’ll appreciate the money invested in not doing the job yourself and consequently annoyed at the one post that leans the wrong way!

The success of Walter and Maria Van Lier’s flower growing adventure began in 1951 when they arrived from Holland to begin a new life.

T

he couple originally started growing potatoes in 1952 and have become nationwide rose suppliers known as Van Lier Nurseries where the family produce some of New Zealand’s finest rose blooms. “Continuing in the traditions Walter and Maria, fondly called Opa and Oma, their son Theo and grandson Harry now run the company that annually grows more than 1.6 million rose stems,” says business manager Joanne Hurley. “Carnations were the first cut flower, Opa grew and in 1974 he saw the romantic necessity for long stem roses, and by the 1980s they were the main component of the business. VLN has 14,000sqm of glasshouse planted with more than 35 rose varieties. They also produce other cut flowers — Alstroemeria, Gypsophilia, Limonium,

Hellebores and Parzival. Recently we built a 2,000sqm glass house and shed for propagation. We propagate plants for ourselves and other cut flower growers and are the sole provider of carnation cuttings in New Zealand. They also grow the houseplant Zanzibar Gem and would like to introduce others to the range. A gas-fueled boiler heats water, which is pumped through the pipes to keep the glasshouse heated. Fifteen micro and macronutrients are delivered through the irrigation system to produce topquality flowers. Summer roses are harvested three times daily during peak harvest to ensure that the flowers are consistently picked at the right stage of opening. Several quality checks are made for straightness and strength, damage, pests or disease and head tightness.

Walter and Maria Van Lier’s flower growing adventure started in 1951 and continues to be a successful business

“When I first joined VLN 11 years ago the immediate challenge was to improve the company’s profitability. In recent years we have been able to reinvest back into the business and take advantage of new technologies to improve productivity. It is rewarding to see the family enjoy the fruit of their labour,” says Joanne. “To keep up to date we look at the trends and discuss with our florists what they require annually.” The Van Lier staff travel to growing trials in Europe to choose their rose varieties. “Bringing new stock into New Zealand is a lengthy and costly process. We apply for permits and go through at least a six-month quarantine process, rigorous testing and cull of the varieties that were initially imported.” Fifty plants of each selected variety are then made and planted in the trial area. “We hold open days showcasing these and send samples to florists for their feedback. Once a variety is chosen as a production plant, it takes 12–18 months for it to mature to full production. Our flowers have not travelled across the world and are grown with minimum pesticides. “We have the largest range of cut rose varieties in the country including the exclusive David Austin Roses — he is a world-famous English rose grower. “David wanted to create a cut cultivated rose and nearly bankrupt himself in his achievement. “The Patience has a dense centre that is fragrant and is popular as a wedding flower. Another favourite rose is Avalanche, from a Dutch breeder

and Kim Kardashian used them at her wedding.” Cut cultivation roses have different characteristics to outdoor rose bushes and breeders invest heavily in developing new varieties. “They don't have the fragrance because the focus is about productivity and stem quantity. Florists need a long vase life, good stem length and flower shape, and few thorns — all important factors when producing floral art designs and wedding bouquets.” Joanne says rose growing is in the blood and Harry will tell you he is a ‘rose grower’ not just a business owner. “Harry loved completing his internship in Europe and bringing the innovations back here. He is proud of his rose growing abilities. “It is fulfilling and gratifying to provide top quality flowers to people. My favourite is Peach Avalanche — I love the colour and the fact it has no thorns — its vase life is up to three weeks, and it holds its bloom. “This is a typical small family business carrying on a passion with a green thumb. It is a big achievement to remain sustainable over three generations particularly given that the core product is a discretionary spend — you don’t have to have cut flowers to stay alive. They definitely bring a lot of pleasure though. “Looking for ways to be innovative is a credit to Opa’s legacy, and Harry and Theo are able to pass on the generational success. Theo’s other son Steffan works in the business and was recently involved

Matt inspects and picks rose blooms ready to be sent for processing in setting the bench system in the new propagation house. “Opa was still coming up to the nursery, and before he died in 2016, Theo would put Opa’s scooter into the covered trailer and Opa would inspect the stock. We had a problem with hollow

stem once, and Opa knew immediately it was a copper deficiency. He certainly passed on his knowledge, and it is appreciated today and will be for generations to come.” The Van Liers sell their products to florists, other growers, and wholesalers throughout the country.

Biosecurity minister Damien O’Connor has announced a package of technical law changes to support the Mycoplasma bovis eradication programme after the response to cattle disease M bovis highlighted problems in the National Animal Identification and Tracing scheme — primarily farmers not registering animal movements and a lack of compliance activities to ensure NAIT’s use. “A well-functioning NAIT is a key part of our efforts to protect our vital primary industries from pests and disease,” said Mr O’Connor. Changes to the NAIT Act 2012 will align the NAIT Act search powers with the Search and Surveillance Act. It will make it clear that all animal movements must be declared to NAIT, even if the new location is not a registered NAIT location and it will hold to account those who fail to declare those movements to NAIT. These changes go no further than powers that already exist under other acts, which allow officers to lawfully obtain information where noncompliance is an issue. Three infringement offences have been created under the Animal Products Act 1999 related to non-compliance with certain Animal Status Declaration requirements and M bovis is being made a notifiable organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993, meaning people who suspect the presence of the disease in a new location must report it to MPI. Prompt reporting is necessary to eradicate the disease. “Farmers and industry have been asking MPI to increase compliance so that people who are not complying Damien O’Connor, Biosecurity minister

Since getting the NAIT Review in April, compliance activities have been stepped up with hundreds of on-farm checks, compliance warnings, stock truck checks and 39 infringement notices — compared with one in the previous five years,” he said. “This legislation marks another meaningful step in bolstering NAIT. We are already implementing nearly

two dozen changes that don’t require legislative change and will revisit NAIT legislation again in coming months — after consulting on more changes, including making NAIT easier to use. “Farmers know that the government is here to help them in times of biosecurity threats and wants to improve a system that was left without change for too long by the previous administration.”

Return of the warrior by Andy Bryenton

Suzuki has been producing a small, super-compact off-roader under various names for the past 40 years now — the Samurai was the first in this lineage, and the current Jimny is the latest. In between, we’ve seen the boxy, military-jeep inspired form move with the times, but the recipe has remained the same. It’s one beloved of real off-roaders — take a peppy, high-revving engine, add a generous amount of ground clearance, simple, wheel-at-each-corner chassis design, a gearbox and differentials, which can take the hard knocks, and wrap it up in a price which makes the big boys of the off-road world look bloated and expensive. Like the light little Caterham on the race track or the Toyota MR2 on the road, it’s an exercise in cutting right to the core of what a machine should do, then adding absolutely nothing unnecessary. Which brings us to the latest iteration of the Jimny. It has added something, which the outgoing model doesn’t have, inspired, perhaps, by the success of the retro-cool Ignis, also in the Suzuki stable. It looks fantastic. Cute as a button but still sharp-edged and eager, like a Rottweiler puppy or a baby version of Mercedes’ G-Wagen. The crisp, boxy creases and sharp lines hint at serious off-road chops, evoking everything from the old Willy’s world war two jeep through to the first edition Toyota Land Cruiser. Moreover, because it’s part of the Samurai-Escudo-Jimny

For decades, the smallest Suzuki off-roader in the garage has offered supreme value for money. It’s even been a weapon of choice for serious off-road racers, who value its lightness and power to weight ratio when

skipping over mud puddles and hitting terrifyingly steep slopes. Now, Suzuki has added a real sense of retro-inspired cool to the mix, in the same way, Fiat or Mini did when they reinvented their 1960s classics. For practicality and style, this is definitely one to pick!
