He will travel the country hosting the regional finals early next year before presenting the grand final in July. Te Radar says he is honoured to be the new face of the prestigious event. “It is one of New Zealand’s truly iconic events, with some great hosts over the years that have left a strong legacy.” The east coast finals will take place in Waipukurau on April 1 2017. This contest will see competitors Hamish Best, Hugh Abbiss and Ben Thomas of Hawke’s Bay, Richard Cameron and Henry Reynolds of Wairarapa, and Patrick Crawshaw, Daniel Tarbotton and Liam Kelly of Tararua pit themselves against one another. Te Radar is originally from an Ohinewai dairy farm in the Waikato and says he feels right at home narrating the contest having grown up watching the fierce competition on television and having a brother who was once a Young Farmer member. “I have these childhood memories of watching it on telly, thinking I could answer the quiz questions but never

getting them right. I never thought that one day I would be the one asking those questions.” Having watched some regional finals last year and compèring the final evening show at the grand final, Te Radar has gleaned an understanding of what it takes to win the FMG Young Farmer of the Year. Contest chairman Dean Rabbidge said he was delighted to welcome Te Radar as the new face of the contest, and said his skills would add another dimension in the 49th year of the competition. “And with the landmark 50th contest coming up, we couldn’t think of anybody more fitting to represent the refreshed format we’ve recently introduced. Te Radar is a beloved character in New Zealand and we couldn’t be happier to see him take on this role.” NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland was also thrilled to secure Te Radar and took the opportunity to thank previous hosts Mark Leishman and Craig Wiggins for their long service to the contest.

It’s been another busy year for students at St Teresa’s and South Featherston schools, but caring for their environment has been high on their list. This year both schools have completed kaitiaki, or guardianship projects, that support neighbouring internationally significant wetland Wairarapa Moana, and have celebrated this work to connect with the natural environment outside their school gates. “These children are very passionate about their environment. We were delighted to support them as they explored ways of caring for Wairarapa Moana,” said Greater Wellington Regional Council’s biodiversity advisor Toni de Lautour. St Teresa’s students wanted to understand how their community’s actions were impacting on water quality, focussing their attention on nearby Donald’s Creek. The school was awarded Bayer Primary School Science funding to pay for water quality monitoring equipment. They have learnt about stream health and established a data collection process. The second phase of their project will see the stream edge planted, and the students will measure the impacts this work has on water quality at this site. Featherston school students focussed on raising public awareness. Department of Conservation senior community ranger Garry Foster presented them with certificates and reflected on their work to raise awareness of the human threat to rare birds breeding at Wairarapa Moana. Students’ brightly coloured signs now adorn access points around the

Unfortunately people sometimes ignore more corporate looking signs. The unique designs the students created really draw attention to the need for people to take action,” said Mr Foster.

A delightful Brew by Ann Morgan

The boutique Martinborough Brewery is nestled amongst the famous vineyards of the region creating unique beer flavours.

F

riends, Hayden and Janalle Frew and Stephen and Amanda Fox came up with the idea of producing a handcrafted beer over drinks one day, and now a small passionate team are crafting the unique beer to perfection. “We thought a brewery would be good in Martinborough and that it would be a good fit with the wine industry,” said Hayden. “We researched and acquired the equipment needed to start experimenting with our ideas.” The Frews owned a lifestyle block with a

small barn at the back of the property where they originally set up the brewery. “We tinkered away on the small system for a couple of years creating different beers and tested the market. Eventually we had to decide if we intended to stay small or go larger with production,” said Hayden. “We got things established in March 2012 and got consents set up and the licensing underway, this made it easier for growing later.” The inaugural Brewday Festival for the region was held in March 2013.

In today’s evolving global landscape, we face complex challenges. Populations are growing, climates are changing and markets are often volatile. Alongside these challenges come huge opportunities: now is the time to invest in solutions and diversity in agriculture. The best outcomes are realised when open data is used to enable, enhance and unearth the wider potential through focused collaboration. The GO! Project is a Tararua District Council initiative that has identified several crop options that are highly suitable for the Tararua District. The aim of the project is to provide meaningful information for people wanting to diversify their cropping and broaden their potential revenue base. The information is intended for smallholders, lifestyle block owners and farmers looking for alternatives to traditional crop options. The GO! Project offers the Tararua District community increased opportunities for job creation, biodiversity, sustainable farming systems and increased family business incomes.

“We tested the market at the greater Wellington Brewday with our very first stout called Black Nectar and it was well received, and a couple of local bars were keen to sell our products. At that stage everything was hand bottled.” The business built momentum and the partners decided to expand as they were effectively giving up their weekends to brew small batches. Each batch takes 10 hours processing and it is a similar to produce a large batch. “It wasn’t viable commercially to stay small and we had to get larger equipment and premises that would work better for us. “We went from producing 50 litres per batch to 1,200 litres. It was a year’s worth of planning and we officially opened the new premises in January 2014.” They have since received several awards for their creations including the silver for Imperial Stout and a Scotch Porter, and bronze for Ohio APA at the 2016 Brewers Guild Awards. “We are staying boutique and we have a tasting room as we believe this is the best way to sell our product,” said Hayden. Janalle runs the operations and front of house aspect, and Hayden focusses on the brewing, processing and sales. They keep things simple with tapas-style food available at the brewery. Hayden says making beer is mostly science with a bit of art, processes and recipes. “It’s about how you put things together and pick the flavours. There is a lot of recording and repeatability, and a bit of chemistry, water temperature and pH levels involved.” He says learning on the small system was good because if things went wrong it wasn’t such an issue losing 50 litres down the drain. “Mike Neilson from Panhead Brewery in Upper Hutt initially

The ladies working at the brewery helped create the salty sour ‘gose’ brew based on salted caramel and hazelnut helped with consulting. He showed us his brewery, helped source equipment, taught us how to set things up and helped with the very first batch in larger brewery. “It really was learning by doing. We had to upscale our recipes and we certainly hit the ground running.” Hayden says a lot of things with regional and local beers comes down to the profile of the water you use. “Our water is very hard and heavy in minerals so it suits dark beers. It is similar to Dublin and London. Dublin is famous for its guinness. There are certain styles of beer our water wouldn’t be good for like lagers and pilsners as they need soft water.

“We started with traditional style recipes but we are serving a mix of styles now, and have created a beer called Vintage Gold which is a Golden Ale and is 4.5 per cent alcohol. Many customers enjoy this, it has become very popular and is easily approachable for a craft beer.” Hayden says people that don’t like hoppy beer like this one start to enjoy the other flavours as they get used to the different style of boutique beers. “We have tried to keep things traditional but have recently done a few

experimental beers, one of which was a salty sour ‘gose’. We created this with the girls at the brewery as they wanted to create a flavour based on salted caramel and hazelnut. “We have also put our Imperial Stout in a wine barrel to age it and see what sort of different flavours we can get from the residual wine and oak. These are types of beers we think will tie in well, being in a wine region. It has been fun and challenging and we are enjoying it.”

December 2016  WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY AYLA MILLER

When Alison Sutherland decided to keep goats on her new lifestyle property little did she know this decision would completely change her life.

C

oming from a research background, and as a self confessed ‘workaholic,’ Alison spent four years learning about the Arapawa goats. The more she learnt the more she became fascinated with the part they played in early New Zealand history and is now sharing it in a book she has written called ‘No Ordinary Goat. The story of New Zealand’s Arapawa goats.’ “The old English goats that came out with Captain Cook became extinct in England but they remained on Arapaoa Island. In my book I’m able to prove the dates that they arrived on the island and show they survived and multiplied.

It became a very fascinating story. There is lots of DNA background proving they are unique in the world, so effectively they belong no where else but New Zealand,” she says. It all started when Alison and her husband Alan moved from Petone to Masterton in search of a quieter life and purchased 10 acres of land on which to keep some animals. “We thought it would be a nice lifestyle change and got a few mini horses and sheep. One day I said to my husband wouldn’t it be lovely to have a goat. We had never had farm animals before so I started doing some research to see what goats might be appropriate.

Alison Sutherland has dedicated a lot of her time to protecting the Arapawa goats and says they are just like ‘dogs in a paddock’

I WANT THEM TO SURVIVE. TO ME THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. I thought we would go for the smallest goats we could find because we don’t know goats. I happened to read a book called Arapawa: Once Upon an Island by Betty Rowe and I thought they would be perfect.” Not only would they be able to have some goats on their property Alison was excited to know they have a significant history and belong to New Zealand. “Two years later I got my first pair of Arapawa goats, a beautiful unrelated pair that came to us on a truck in a box and so it began.” From that moment on Alison was hooked and wanted to share this unique breed with the rest of the country. She decided to set up a registry and founded the New Zealand Arapawa Goat Association. Her two original goats, Maana and Dobby, are first on the list. However the Depar tment of Conservation considers the animals a pest and had programmes in place to eradicate them from the island. “I understand DOC’s position. They are trying to protect the flora and fauna of New Zealand but I don’t believe

they have the right to eradicate an entire breed.” With a little talking Alison managed to convince DOC to remove some of the goats instead of killing them and these were then added to the registry on the mainland. There are currently 217 fertile Arapawa goats on the registry in New Zealand. “They are recognised as being critically endangered in the rest of the world but not in New Zealand. Six were sent to the United Kingdom and six sent to the United States of America. In the United Kingdom they can’t survive as there is not enough gene spread. In the US they are doing everything they can to keep the genetics.” Alison was motivated to write the book to put the facts out there so that other people will want to do something about ensuring the breed does not disappear. “This is New Zealand’s early European history and for someone who just has a little bit of land, even an acre or two, they are the most wonderful paddock pets.” As for the future of the Arapawa goat? Alison would like to see them officially recognised by the New Zealand Government as endangered, and the eradication programmes changed to being just about controlling the population on the island. “I want them to survive. To me that is the most important thing. We have no right to eradicate an animal because they belong to future generations.”

PROGRESSING FOR THE FAMILY by Ann Morgan

Trixie and Greg Duckett live in Featherston on a 300 cow dairy farm which they purchased three years ago after sharemilking the property for eight years.

G

reg grew up on a farm in Carterton and he had a dairy farming uncle. Greg would milk with him during school holidays. He had always wanted a boat of his own and decided at 14 years old that if he became a dairy farmer he could get his own boat. “When Greg left school he went straight to Taratahi Agricultural Training School in Masterton and from there he worked his way up starting as a worker then 2IC managing, and we met and he took his first lower order job,” said Trixie. Trixie was a townie from Upper Hutt and visited family in the Wairarapa every weekend. She loved it and always wanted to be a farmer so went to Taratahi as well and then got a dairy farming job.

“I didn’t have a good experience and ended up considering what else I could do,” she says. “I was offered a job as an embalmer so I retrained and went to Melbourne for three years where I worked for a coroner. I returned to New Zealand and relief milked for a local farmer until I was full time and met Greg. From there he took a lower order position and I worked on another farm, earning more income.” The couple eventually purchased this farm which Greg runs with a worker, Trixie runs the business side of things and is now focussing on her embalming funeral directing business. The 84 hectare property is fully irrigated and the couple also have an 84 hectare run off which they lease.

Greg and Trixie and Duckett believe farming is the best lifestyle for a family

“The young stock are kept here and we take silage off it and do a bit of cropping through the winter. We grow fodder beet which we are having good results with. You have to be careful and know what you are doing planting, fertilising, watering and feeding this crop,” she says. “We are fortunate that our farm advisor is like a family member and is

older. He helps us make our decisions and he helped us with the fodder beet as he has a lot of knowledge. “You need to know how much to give the stock at first until they get used to eating it. We have found it really good for putting on condition and the happiness of our cows. “Greg is 37 years old and we have accomplished all we have so far by

The Ducketts have worked their way up the ladder to farm ownership

ourselves, we have not had farms passed down to us. We have worked our way up to farm ownership and our bank want us to try for the Business of the Year as we are doing so well. They go through all our books and procedures — it is an honour to have the bank suggest we enter. “We have three children and they love the farm life. All three are expected to work on the farm. They have their own jobs they are responsible for and even our two-year-old loves it.” At present the couple are preparing to build a new cowshed as the current one is very old and keeps malfunctioning. “The build starts on December 1 and we are deciding on builders and design which is huge. With the payout not being so great and taking out a larger mortgage it is quite stressful but worth it in the end to progress with our business. Greg takes care of all the AI and has been working on developing their calving spread. “This year we started calving

on July 20 and were nearly finished by the end of August. We are working hard on getting the cows pregnant on the first cycle and ensuring they are in the right condition to get pregnant again. We also AI our heifers and keep about 100 calves as replacements a year. “The future looks good. We don’t want to get bigger and bigger. We aim to get our mortgage down and have security for our family. In the long term we want to build the business up so Greg can step back a bit and have more family time. “We live right on the lake — Greg did get his boat and we quite often go out between milkings and do a bit of watersport with the children and if Greg can get time off he goes fishing and diving. “It is a great lifestyle. The children go to a small rural school with 60 students. I like the values and how they do things. It is a close community and everyone knows each other. That’s the thing — you work bloody hard but it’s a good life.”

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

WATER MATTERS

11

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of irrigation Irrigation is the black art of replacing water which has been removed from the ground by evapotranspiration (ET) through plants. This is part of how plants ingest their nutrients. Important points to know: NIWA have ET rates for your area, check their website. It will show rates as a graph through the year, summer obviously higher but ET is also determined by the atmosphere’s ability to absorb the moisture, so it is higher on windy days due to higher dispersal. Every millimetre of rain you need to apply daily requires 10,000 litres/ha, so if ET hits 5mm you need at least 50,000 litres every hectare, every day. That’s if you want the plant to really grow, not just look green. You need to match ET rate plus allowance for percolation through the soil (over irrigation) plus loss during irrigation, minus rainfall (if any). ET rates follow quite closely to available moisture rates so it is important to begin irrigating early enough as the plant growth will have checked by the time you notice it. Woody plants have a higher ET rate than leafy plants so kale ET will likely be more than chicory. Admittedly plants with deep roots will hang on longer, mostly in heavy soils but in the end need still water replacement. Irrigating methods are just that, management tools, don’t be fooled by the fancy promises, they can’t make your plant excel with less than ET rate — assuming you are trying to hold constant moisture in the ground. Beware of stories telling you that a system allows you to get away with less application. They do exist but also require electronic monitoring and experience on the operator’s part. Keep water droplets as large as practicable. This is

100 where you can save some water. Despite public perception, small sprinklers can easily have the same losses as large sprinklers, it’s just not so visible. The law of physics tells us when you expose water to warm air it evaporates. Large bodies of water (large droplets) have a greater mass to surface area than small bodies, so fine mist tends to evaporate more — keep the nozzle size up/nozzle pressure down, within reason! There’s no free lunch with irrigation, either you can have a cheap system with lots of running costs and maintenance or a more reasonably priced system but with better application evenness, better growth patterns, and easier and less time consuming management and maintenance. Often the principal cost differences between the two are not proportional to the results. Clement (Clem) Powell of

SIMPLICITY

The success of the award winning Clean Green Effluent System has been its simplicity. We start by filtering out the solids through a patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash. This fresh green water is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total fresh water consumption to

about 20lt/cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/day. As we are now only using 20lt/ cow we only have to deal with 20lt/cow per day for storage and distribution to land. The Clean Green Effluent System has a unique distribution system that was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25 mm or ¼mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems. The super low application depth allows for

application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity. As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round, the storage requirement is minimal. The Clean Green Effluent System utilises 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage to exceed the requirement of the Massey University Pond Calculator. Comprehensive research over the past ten years is looking positive for the Clean Green Effluent Company System. Testing has indicated that the super low application system will cause no environmental ill

effects even in the winter. The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall liquid farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year. This liquid has to be dealt with via your distribution system. Rainwater contribution in open ponds can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairyshed. The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem free effluent system.

Benefits of the system • Small foot print • No storage ponds • Fully automated • 0.25mm application/24hrs • Low man hours to maintain • Low running costs • 60% fresh water savings • Fully patented system • Environmentally friendly

Having just hosted the Central Nationals in December, the Motorplex ‘top brass’ have planned an actionpacked schedule for Januar y through April. An already hot summer will sizzle with high-octane power as the big boys roll out to settle once and for all who is fastest. Here’s what’s coming up. Next on the list is ‘Dragstalgia’ in January, combining the nostalgia of the hot rod era with the pursuit of ultimate speed. The Auckland Invasion on February 11–12 will see drivers and teams from the ‘big smoke’ creating some big smoke of their own as they clash with the locals in a head-to-head battle. Then the 49th NZ Nationals fire up on March 18–19,

with massive bragging rights on the line. Capping off the season will be a Top Alcohol Challenge in April, featuring cars that go beyond petrol power and into a new realm of accelerative insanity! Bob from Masterton Motorplex says it will be interesting to see which meeting gets the biggest attendance, given the popularity of each in its own right. Times will only get faster as the drag strip next door to Masterton Airport continues to mature, Bob says, with one of New Zealand’s major television stations planning to film one of the meetings. Visitors will notice further improvements to the venue including a balcony around the timing tower, and new gardens and lawns. A shelter is also

Boost for genetics

In a landmark trans-Tasman collaboration, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Genetics and Meat & Livestock Australia are committing a total of $5.2 million over three years towards major joint beef research projects. New Zealand beef genetics research is about to get a ‘shot in the arm’, thanks to the landmark trans-Tasman collaboration. All projects within the collaboration — regardless of which side of the Tasman they fall on — will be overseen by B+LNZ Genetics. B+LNZ Genetics general manager Graham Alder says the collaboration means every one dollar of New Zealand farmer levy investment translates to $3.50 of research funding. “The research and development needs of New Zealand and Australian producers are well-aligned. It makes sense for scientists on both sides of the Tasman to work together to solve common problems,” Mr Alder said. “Beef genetics research in New Zealand has been underfunded for 30 years. This partnership means research can progress and the results communicated out to breeders and

commercial farmers many years earlier. For Australia, it means faster progress and an opportunity to advance projects that may not have otherwise gone ahead.” The partnership centres around the trans-Tasman Beef Cow Profitability Programme, which aims to balance desirable maternal traits in beef cows, with the finishing performance of the calves and their ability to meet quality carcase specifications. The programme will develop genetic measures for better describing the important physical attributes of the cow — such as size, body condition and her ability handle fluctuations in feed availability, fertility indicators in heifers, and selection tools for easy decision-making. It will also investigate how different environments and farm systems in both countries impact on the balance of traits required to produce an economically

efficient cow. This research will also help underpin advancements in genomic technology. Who is involved? In Australia: the University of Adelaide and the University of New England’s Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit. In New Zealand: AbacusBio and Massey University. Commercial beef farmers and bull breeders will also be heavily involved, along with Angus New Zealand and the New Zealand Hereford Association. The research will draw on existing projects already underway in commercial farm

settings. In New Zealand, B+LNZ Genetics’ Beef Progeny Test and Maternal Cow Project will feed into the research. In Australia, inclusion of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Programme and Hereford Progeny Test are being considered by the respective breed associations, with solid initial interest. The programme kicked off with a joint meeting of Australian and New Zealand beef breeders, farmers and science providers on November 14–15 in Albury-Wodonga.
