“The Conservation (Infringement System) Amendment Bill updates eight separate Acts to allow the Department of Conservation to issue infringement notices, instead of prosecuting for minor offences.” says Minister of Conservation, Eugenie Sage. The bill was introduced under the previous Government. Currently all conservation offences under the Acts and regulations have to be dealt with either as a formal warning or through the courts. “Our national parks, public conservation lands, and indigenous plants and wildlife need to be kept safe from illegal human activities, but I don’t want to see people prosecuted and get a criminal conviction for a minor breach of the whitebaiting regulations, or dropping litter in a park.” Ms Sage said the offences in the current law covered a wide range of offending. “Someone who fishes in a marine reserve inadvertently, and does not catch any fish or do any harm, may now get an infringement notice. Someone who deliberately flouts the rules, and poaches fish is still likely to end up in court.” The bill has been drafted so serious offences, such as using a firearm unsafely or harming threatened species, will not be given infringement notices but will be prosecuted. “These changes bring DOC’s powers in line with how lowlevel offences are dealt with in fisheries management, biosecurity, dog control,

resource management, traffic and parking. The bill has been referred to the Environment Select Committee for consideration and public submissions. “I welcome the unanimous support received in the House and look forward to receiving the Select Committee report in due course,” says Ms Sage.

Planting a billion trees in ten years is a huge challenge. The government’s aim is long term – for employment and climate change targets decades into the future. Today’s children will get the rewards when they are grown up. The new trees could add 500,000 hectares to New Zealand’s established 1.7 million hectares of plantation forests. That land is our contribution already. We’ll produce 32 million cubic metres of logs for timber this year and we replant the land after we harvest. We look forward to sharing; with government, iwi and farmers, all of the great future which comes with growing trees. Let’s plant.

Time to collar dog fees

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

Federated Farmers will be asking councils across the country to lower their farm dog registration fees, if they have them, this year during Long Term Plans. Farm dogs are low demand users of council dog control services, creating significantly lower relative costs. Councils vary with what they charge for rural dogs, although Federated Farmers guesses that the level of work that rural dogs generate is probably the same across districts, and pretty minimal compared to urban dogs. These dogs are part of the family, and a valuable asset to the farm business and many hours are spent training them as a source of pride, and bad behaviour like being aggressive to animals or people is dealt with quickly. Farm dogs are contained in their kennels or chained up at night and being on large farms mean dogs are contained on the property — they do not roam the streets, and barking rarely annoys the neighbours. If a dog does stray, neighbours are quick to recognise the dog and call the owner. For a single rural dog, Masterton District Council charges $80, which is the same as an urban dog. Subsequent rural dogs in Masterton are charged at $20 to register. A team of 10 dogs in Masterton would cost $260. Carterton rural dogs cost $60 each for the first and second dog, which is the same cost as for a desexed urban dog.

BY ANN MORGAN Jessica Vaughan grew up on Arran farm — her parents’ dairy farm consisting of pedigree Ayrshire, Holstein, Jersey, milking Shorthorns and a Brown Swiss cow.

“M

y dad purchased the Brown Swiss in January and she is doing well and won the intermediate championship at the NZ Dairy Event in 2017,” says Jessica. Jessica is the fifth generation Donald on the farm and her children Cameron and Charli are the sixth. Her husband Michael works for Fonterra and Jessica is an office manager for A R Donaldson Livestock Limited. “I have always been involved with the Arran stud show team and won the Ayrshire Young Judge competition. When I was 12 years old I won the handlers’ class at the Royal Show in the Waikato.

“My dad Selwyn has been a huge influence and instilled into us the love of a good dairy cow. There are many breeds at our farm and it doesn’t matter what she is — if she is a good cow, she is a good cow. “Dad is very supportive and has worked hard to get the farm to where it is now and helping us with both showing and farming. My mum is also a big part of our life helping with the children and passing on her knowledge of the industry. “I love the social aspect of showing — it gets you off the farm and you compare what you are doing with others.

We acquired Peakview Alfie Hetty, she is a two time supreme champion Ayrshire at the NZ Dairy Event and is a Royal Show champion and a World Photo competition runnerup winner.

She is 10 this year and still breeding.” Michael and Jessica’s stock live at the farm and are milked under the Arran Stud banner. “I have been very lucky to travel with dad to different shows. I have been to Canada where we were able to check out their cattle and barns and the Sydney Royal show. In 2015 dad judged at the World Dairy Expo in Madison USA and 2,500 cattle exhibited. Michael

stayed home and held the fort — he is extremely supportive and allows me the time to be involved. “Michael was a city boy turned cow cocky and is always willing to get his hands dirty. He is a huge part of the Arran team. We are always thinking how to do things better next time — looking for potential animals and how to get them fully prepared. “My strong administration background working with the rural sector gave me the opportunity to join the Dairy Event committee. My passion is to focus on

the youth for our future and get more young people involved. “The event is socially healthy — you meet people from all over the world. People involved in the show are always willing to help get others involved.” Jessica says youth build their confidence and they make great contacts. Cameron is four-and-a-half years old and has already shown a granddaughter of Hetty. “Cameron loves being on the farm and going on the tractor with granddad and learning about the stock.”

Keeping horse

AND RIDER SAFE

by Ann Morgan Marijke Lindgreen has been riding horses since she was a young girl and with many years’ experience says road users and horse riders can better share the road by understanding the dangers.

H

er comments follow a National Ride for Road Safety event when hundreds of riders across the country joined forces to bring awareness to motorists and cyclists that if they give a two-metre berth, and pass at 20km/h — as they would with a school bus — they could save a life. “I love riding and my horse is a good friend to me, and as any rider will tell you they become part of your family. There are many disturbing stories of road safety regarding meeting a horse and rider whilst people are out driving.” She said drivers at times have driven close enough for her to touch them with her riding whip. “We enjoy riding our horses as much as other people enjoy their bicycles, vintage cars or motorbikes, but people don’t realise simply slowing down and

giving us two metres can save lives, including the people in vehicles.” A horse can weigh 500kg and a spooked or injured horse can jump through the windscreen or on the roof of a car, and cyclists and motorcyclists are also at risk. “If you are approaching on a motorbike, in a truck or with a trailer in tow, the noise can spook a horse and it can bolt sideways with fright. Slowing down gives us a safety barrier to work in.” She says with more city people relocating to rural areas education of country roads is important. “Younger people are also learning to ride on country roads as well as drive on them. It is the same when you approach a herd of cattle or sheep being moved on the road. Slow down — all animals

A rider will signal for traffic to slow down if necessary for various reasons such as a learner rider being present

can get a fright.” Knowing a horse rider’s hand signals is very important. “The signal for you to slow down is the rider extending their arm outstretched with an open hand, palm out and moving

their arm up and down. “If they need you to stop they will show a raised hand out front. This might be because they are training an inexperienced horse in using the road or something has happened.

“To turn right we will point with our right arm outstretched and point left with our left arm outstretched to turn left.” A horse will hear a vehicle approaching from the rear, but won’t necessarily see it and modern cars such as hybrids are very quiet. Ambient noise like high winds or farm machinery also means the horse might not hear you which could startle it, and it may lurch sideways into your path before the rider can regain control. “Loud stereos and noisy blow-off valves or exhausts as you accelerate away can also cause a fright. Gently accelerate away once you pass the horse and don’t use your horn.” At a roundabout a horse rider will stay left the whole way around, even though they might be turning right — watch for hand signals. Marijke says riders need to remember to always wear a helmet and be courteous on the road. Don’t ride more than two abreast, or on the right of any moving vehicle. ‘If you are leading another animal always keep it on your left away from the traffic, and if at night wear reflective clothing and carry a torch. “It is courteous to give a friendly wave, smile or nod to motorists when they pass safely. If you face a negative experience refrain from rude gestures or shouting because this can lead to an altercation and startle the animal. “Be aware of everything going on around you and if riding in a group approach the road single file with the most experienced rider in the lead. your animal’s full attention and cross together when it is safe and then continue with one horse length between each person.” Mail boxes, flags, or garbage tossed into the ditch could startle animals. Horses use their ears to focus on sounds and may hear something before you do so stay aware. Engine sounds give clues as to what type of vehicles are approaching and the speeds they may be travelling. “Always respect private property and

‘No Trespassing’ signs and leave gates the way you found them — open if they are open and close them behind you if you open them to pass through,” she says. Ultimately, if everyone respects each other, rides and drives in a safe manner and pays attention to other road users, we can all enjoy ourselves and certainly have way less unnecessary accidents or incidents.”

A COMMUNITY COMMITMENT

by Anna Harding

Carterton local Helen Dew is passionate about growing food and her community. She has spend most of her adult life being self sufficient and she’s done it all close to town, on a quarter acre block, proving that you don’t need a whole farm to live with nature.

“M

y husband and I started here 60 years ago on a bare section close to town, and we’ve built the garden up between us. Now I’m practically self-sufficient allyear round. The land is central to my life. I’ve always been into gardening, so was my husband. He passed away about four years ago.” Helen eats and grows what is in season. At the moment, in August, she’s harvesting: leeks, carrots, parsnips, kale, silverbeet, yacon, radish, salad greens and citrus fruits. She also freezes and bottles her produce and dries her own fruit. “When you stay in one place for a while, that pays off with production. Your soil improves. I’m really into looking after the soil and rotating crops.”

Helen is committed to being chemical free and uses animal manure, mulch, worm farming and Bokashi composting, a process where inoculated bran is used to ferment kitchen waste into a nutrient-rich tea for plants, to keep her soil healthy. Helen’s ultimate vision is to have her community grow and share their produce together. “Sharing the garden’s abundance encourages interaction among friends and neighbours. Growing locally reduces our carbon footprint, less ‘food miles’, less packaging — and helps to pass on basic skills, thereby building community resilience.” Around the Wairarapa, Helen is

involved in many local initiatives. One is the Local Growers’ Group, a collective of local gardeners who sell their fresh, spray-free produce together at the Carterton Farmers’ Market, the group’s stall is rostered on and shared. “The farmers’ market is a really important part of my local activity, so I try to go weekly. I want to make a contribution and I meet so many interesting people at the markets, not just locals. There’s a lot of new people coming into Carterton — we’ve got a very friendly, cooperative culture here.” Helen also sells seeds at the market, as she believes that gardeners get the best results when they use seeds that are locally produced, and acclimatised to the district. “It’s a political thing too — there’s powerful large corporates that want to control the whole food system — in some countries it’s illegal to seed save.” Living Economies is another big part of Helen’s life, as she is a founding member. “It’s an organisation of people who believe that it’s education and trust that promote community resilience, principally through the promotion of trade and exchange system services, which honour the fact that humans are part of a natural, living system.” So with an interest in alternative and complementary trading schemes, Helen is part of Savings Pools, Wairarapa Green Dollars and Wairarapa Timebank. “Savings Pools started in Denmark, as a response to financial stress in the farming community. It was farmers helping farmers,” said Helen. “Basically,

the pools involve a group of people saving into a common account and lending to each other, interest-free. Green dollars is something Helen has been part of since 1991. It is a local trading system that involves bartering or trading, using locally created currency. The currency is called ‘Wai$ dollars’ or ‘green dollars.’ Traders use an online system for finding what is on offer and for recording sales. They can also use Wai$ vouchers, a paper currency designed and printed in Masterton. Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Come along to one of our expos and see how it works for yourself! (See red bar for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

TESTIMONIAL

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity.

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns This is pure logic, if a machine is out of quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Traction opens up the The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle decline and allows the body to repair itself, rocking motion that stimulates circulation resulting in a far healthier life. and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into If you are serious about investing in your your lymph system where it stimulates health and really sorting your issues out, lymph flow and deals with it. BACK

Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores.

Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Keeping hydatids away With the farming communities involved visiting the field days, it is a good time to remember that the days of hydatids in New Zealand are gone, but we still need to be careful when feeding our dogs offal. Ace Products specialise in stainless steel electric boilers for offal and horse grain — both cookers are available in 63L and 94L sizes. “Hydatid is the cystic, larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, and has a life cycle similar to that of sheep measles. Unlike sheep measles, hydatid is a public health issue,” says manager of Ace Products, Mike Swanson. “Hydatid is found in farm livestock, including sheep and even humans, while the adult tapeworm occurs in dogs — the parasite’s primary host.” The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), declared New Zealand provisionally free from E granulosus in 2002, however, control measures continue to be in place to limit the spread of the parasite from being reintroduced into the country. “We don’t want hydatids back and taking care and cooking your offal for dog food properly, is an important part of helping keep the pest at bay and this is simple when you use the Ace cookers. “Horse grain is often cooked also and our machines are popular, because you can prepare larger quantities, rather than tiny batches, in a household slow cooker for your full-time work horses,

showing or polo ponies. “Cooking horse grains such as barley, helps soften the food up making it more easy for the horse to digest. “Many people using the Ace Horse Grain Boiler to help get their horse into top condition with digestible grain — there is no crushing, rolling, stirring or charring. This model has an element cover with convection tube attached to provide good circulation and rapid cooking. The elements are especially made for this purpose.” Ace Boilers are easily transported and they pivot on a frame stand. When not locked into position, they can be tipped and are easily cleaned. They have a time switch and are 230V — ready to plug into a domestic power socket. The elements are available in different capacities to suit the size of the boiler and are guaranteed for one year. The boiler also has a one year guarantee against faulty

workmanship and cooking instructions are supplied. “Our offal and grain cookers are very popular and make these chores easy.” For more information call Mike on 027 294 6190 or email mike@aceproducts. co.nz

Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. In the New Zealand agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware. Once Prolan is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides long-term protection. Bikes can be water blasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value. There are also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser and trucking companies realising the benefits of a coating of Prolan to protect truck and fertiliser loaders’ chassis operating in harsh environments. Prolan is coated internally and underneath to provide protection. The significant cost savings to fleet owners are they are reporting far fewer WOF and COF failures from rust since using Prolan products, less downtime

on maintenance, fewer part replacements and increased resale values. Even vehicle testing stations are recommending the product to customers having problems with rust issues. Prolan has a strong following with key distributors Farmlands, Ullrich Aluminium and Anzor fasteners. The product is so versatile it is sought after by farmers, engineers, boaties, scaffolders, marinas, concrete companies and panelbeaters, with the added bonus it is safe to use and easy on the environment. With the great summer we are experiencing many of us are out on the water. The use of a life jacket is a must for small craft. If you are using an inflatable life jacket once the season is complete it is important to check the CO2 cylinder for corrosion. A simple squirt with Prolan once a year, will ensure your life jacket will inflate when you need it. We will have a life jacket on display at the field days demonstrating the use of Prolan for life jacket maintenance. We welcome your visit to our new site at the Central District Field Days 141B. Cleaning under woolsheds Mark and Megan Turton own Clean Sweep Woolsheds and use their ‘clean sweep machine’ to remove stored up manure from under your building with ease. “The innovative machine took us two years to design and get perfect, and two years to get up and running — it is the talk of the industry,” says Mark. “Removing the sheep droppings from under the shed makes for a healthier environment for the farmer, the sheep and the wool. “We thought of the idea one day, as a way to make life easier for sheep farmers. We do the work for you, it is not labour intensive and the bulk of the work is done automatically from outside the shed. Having a clean base gets a good airflow going and this removes odours and helps keep the sheep dry ready for shearing — it is one of those jobs that is always put off, as it is a terrible job to do, but the grates get fuller and fuller. “We had another great year in 2017, and 2018 is starting out really good too. Megan and I have been busy travelling around looking at woolsheds and doing a lot of pricing. Again, we have seen some amazing sights and have met a lot of wonderful people. “We inspect every shed we quote on — we check the pile lines, the access, and how wet and deep the effluent is. “If you have not cleaned out under your woolshed in the last 10 years give

A passion for olives Nestled in the foothills of the Brynderwyns, near the small town of Mangawhai in Northland, sits the picturesque olive grove, Olives on the Hill, owned by Chris and Linda Smith. With its Mediterranean climate, the beautiful rural setting is also home to The Grove Supply Co. They provide anything that a small to medium olive grower would need, from harvesting equipment including the fantastic Mambo Karbonium, brilliant deleafers, nets, rakes and bins. “We have a huge range of fustis and stainless steel tanks, taps, filters, cappers, fruit presses and an amazing olive press/ malaxer combination,” says Linda. “We also have equipment for orchardists to crush and press other fruits.” Chris and Linda recently took the opportunity to travel to Italy, visiting Sansone and Zanon, their two main suppliers of plant and machinery. Sansone and Zanon are high-quality brands; and The Grove Supply Co. is the only official distributor of Sansone

products in New Zealand. She reflects that the trip was incredibly successful. Meeting the people who they do business with face-to-face has enabled strong relationships to be established, that will result in benefits being passed on to customers of The Grove Supply Co. “We’ve managed to negotiate very good deals with both Sansone and Zanon, which will form the basis of a review of all our equipment prices this year. There will be some very special deals resulting from the prices that we have negotiated.” After visiting their Italian suppliers, Linda and Chris moved on to Spain for 10 days, joining an Olives New Zealand tour of olive groves led by its president, Andrew Taylor. Peter and Jocelyn Jackson established their business TICK2DIG after having difficulty with trying to get underground cables located for Peter’s electrical contracting business. After using basic cable locating equipment in his electrical work, it became obvious from job requests that there was very little available in the Wairarapa on underground locating services. TICK2DIG decided to invest in ground penetrating radar, the first in the Wairarapa and possibly the Wellington area at that time. Working with the local district councils and the ultrafast broadband rollout in the Wairarapa, the company expanded their area of expertise; using Peter’s background in electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic fault-finding, to add a water leak detector, drain camera, infrared camera, more comprehensive cable fault locating equipment and a concrete scanner. TICK2DIG has been contracted to Power Co, Downers, all three local councils and their contractors, many households along with farmers and businesses in the Wairarapa/ Wellington region. Our services have been used to find reinforcing in concrete structures, gravesites, water leaks and drains etc.

One of these services is to check the condition of sewers in the pre-purchase phase of older homes. Clay pipes have been found to move, crack or even collapse as the result of earth movement, earthquakes or tree root intrusion, a point few people think of getting checked before purchasing a building. As Masterton does not have water meters, it is difficult to know if your property has a water leak unless you can see or hear it. TICK2DIG do not carry out repairs. We are a dedicated locating company and give unbiased advice for you to pass along to your preferred tradesman. Send your request to Peter and Jocelyn at enquiries@tcik2dig.co.nz or visit our website www.tick2dig.co.nz.

The legend of bigfoot by Andy Bryenton

Tough, durable, and right at home on steep slopes and high, rough terrain — that’s the legendary description of bigfoot, the socalled yeti of Tibetan mythology and North American legend. But it’s an apt description for another bigfoot as well — the Kawasaki Mule bigfoot. From the start, Kawasaki engineers designed their mule range to be tough and hardy, like their namesake. Simplicity of construction and design means that it’s easy to keep a mule going in harsh conditions, and it spans the sweet spot between power and fuel economy as well.

Kawasaki are no strangers to both the road and the dirt on two wheels, and they’ve adapted their engine tech to the task of powering a slower, but more strong and stable working machine. A 400cc overhead valve aircooled engine sits low in the frame for good weight distribution, and draws its air from high up in the tubular roll cage structure, ensuring clean air through the motor even in dusty conditions. A simple four-wheel drive system with locking rear differential and a limited slip front does the job in tough terrain, and this is where the bigfoot part of the mule’s name comes in. Literal ‘big feet’ — 12 inch rims with massive, knobbly off-road tyres allow for old fashioned off-roading tricks to be used, adjusting tyre pressure and floating over mud and slush where others would bog in. This wider footprint also prevents wheel ruts on pasture, protecting the substrate beneath as you pass. Simplicity too, dictates the cargo space — a tipping deck made of hardwearing diamond plate steel covered in scratch proof textured black paint

can accommodate all your tools and hardware on the farm. And when the day is through, the simple and unfussy styling of the Kawasaki means it’s easier to get the mud off with the water blaster. There may be other machines out there

with higher top speeds, larger engines or flashier paint jobs. But the mule — and especially the bigfoot variant — are designed for work rather than show. If that’s what you need on the farm, give them a look this field days in Northland.

Fewer livestock available

The remaining livestock available for processing for the rest of the season will be less than in any of the previous five seasons, according to a forecast by Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Economic Service. The analysis by B+LNZ shows dry conditions and strong prices for lamb, mutton and beef in the December quarter of the 2017-18 season drove high processing volumes. “International demand for lamb and mutton remains strong, particularly from China and the USA — New Zealand’s largest and third largest single country markets for sheepmeat,” says Andrew Burtt, B+LNZ chief economist. The average value per tonne for lamb, mutton and beef exports were at record or near record levels in the December quarter. The forecasts for lambs available for processing will be up 1.3 per cent on the previous season. The number processed in the December quarter was up 13 per cent, leaving 2.1 per cent fewer lambs for the remainder of the season, compared to 2016-17. The estimated number of sheep available for processing in the January to September period is down 17 per cent. The total number of sheep available for mutton is forecast to be down 6.0 per cent, however, 15 per cent more were processed in the December quarter, which is a record for the period. Additionally, Australian sheep meat

exports are forecast to decline in 2018. Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has projected Australia’s lamb exports to be down four per cent and mutton exports down six per cent. Excluding IntraEuropean Union trade, Australia and New Zealand account for approximately 90 per cent of international sheep meat trade. “The total number of cattle available is estimated to be even with the previous season, but down 3.7 per cent on the five-year average — 15 per cent more cattle were processed in the December quarter, which means 4.7 per cent fewer cattle are available for the rest of the season,” says Mr Burtt. “Cows and bulls processed were up 33 per cent and 23 per cent respectively. The dry conditions for some dairy producing regions drove some of the increased cow processing, as farmers managed their feed stocks for the rest of the summer. “The dry December quarter brought forward some of the bull processing for the same feed management reasons. The number of bulls processed has been generally increasing in recent seasons.” B+LNZ estimates there are still 5.5 per cent more bulls available. number of heifers available is expected to be down 3.8 per cent, and the number of steers is forecast to be down slightly due to a slight decrease in the number of steers born, as a result of the decline in the number of beef breeding cows.
