“The Conservation (Infringement System) Amendment Bill updates eight separate Acts to allow the Department of Conservation to issue infringement notices, instead of prosecuting for minor offences.” says Minister of Conservation, Eugenie Sage. The bill was introduced under the previous Government. Currently all conservation offences under the Acts and regulations have to be dealt with either as a formal warning or through the courts. “Our national parks, public conservation lands, and indigenous plants and wildlife need to be kept safe from illegal human activities, but I don’t want to see people prosecuted and get a criminal conviction for a minor breach of the whitebaiting regulations, or dropping litter in a park.” Ms Sage said the offences in the current law covered a wide range of offending. “Someone who fishes in a marine reserve inadvertently, and does not catch any fish or do any harm, may now get an infringement notice. Someone who deliberately flouts the rules, and poaches fish is still likely to end up in court.” The bill has been drafted so serious offences, such as using a firearm unsafely or harming threatened species, will not be given infringement notices but will be prosecuted. “These changes bring DOC’s powers in line with how lowlevel offences are dealt with in fisheries management, biosecurity, dog control,

resource management, traffic and parking. The bill has been referred to the Environment Select Committee for consideration and public submissions. “I welcome the unanimous support received in the House and look forward to receiving the Select Committee report in due course,” says Ms Sage.

Federated Farmers will be asking councils across the country to lower their farm dog registration fees, if they have them, this year during Long Term Plans. Farm dogs are low demand users of council dog control services, creating significantly lower relative costs. Councils vary with what they charge for rural dogs, although Federated Farmers guesses that the level of work that rural dogs generate is probably the same across districts, and pretty minimal compared to urban dogs. These dogs are part of the family, and a valuable asset to the farm business and many hours are spent training them as a source of pride, and bad behaviour like being aggressive to animals or people is dealt with quickly. Farm dogs are contained in their kennels or chained up at night and being on large farms mean dogs are contained on the property — they do not roam the streets, and barking rarely annoys the neighbours. If a dog does stray, neighbours are quick to recognise the dog and call the owner. For a single rural dog, Masterton District Council charges $80, which is the same as an urban dog. Subsequent rural dogs in Masterton are charged at $20 to register. A team of 10 dogs in Masterton would cost $260. Carterton rural dogs cost $60 each for the first and second dog, which is the same cost as for a desexed urban dog.

With the lower east coast of the North Island characterised by large sheep and beef farms where teams of dogs will be common, Federated Farmers wants councils to introduce a discounted flat fee for rural dog teams.

BY ANN MORGAN Jessica Vaughan grew up on Arran farm — her parents’ dairy farm consisting of pedigree Ayrshire, Holstein, Jersey, milking Shorthorns and a Brown Swiss cow.

“M

y dad purchased the Brown Swiss in January and she is doing well and won the intermediate championship at the NZ Dairy Event in 2017,” says Jessica. Jessica is the fifth generation Donald on the farm and her children Cameron and Charli are the sixth. Her husband Michael works for Fonterra and Jessica is an office manager for A R Donaldson Livestock Limited. “I have always been involved with the Arran stud show team and won the Ayrshire Young Judge competition. When I was 12 years old I won the handlers’ class at the Royal Show in the Waikato.

“My dad Selwyn has been a huge influence and instilled into us the love of a good dairy cow. There are many breeds at our farm and it doesn’t matter what she is — if she is a good cow, she is a good cow. “Dad is very supportive and has worked hard to get the farm to where it is now and helping us with both showing and farming. My mum is also a big part of our life helping with the children and passing on her knowledge of the industry. “I love the social aspect of showing — it gets you off the farm and you compare what you are doing with others.

stayed home and held the fort — he is extremely supportive and allows me the time to be involved. “Michael was a city boy turned cow cocky and is always willing to get his hands dirty. He is a huge part of the Arran team. We are always thinking how to do things better next time — looking for potential animals and how to get them fully prepared. “My strong administration background working with the rural sector gave me the opportunity to join the Dairy Event committee. My passion is to focus on

the youth for our future and get more young people involved. “The event is socially healthy — you meet people from all over the world. People involved in the show are always willing to help get others involved.” Jessica says youth build their confidence and they make great contacts. Cameron is four-and-a-half years old and has already shown a granddaughter of Hetty. “Cameron loves being on the farm and going on the tractor with granddad and learning about the stock.”

er comments follow a National Ride for Road Safety event when hundreds of riders across the country joined forces to bring awareness to motorists and cyclists that if they give a two-metre berth, and pass at 20km/h — as they would with a school bus — they could save a life. “I love riding and my horse is a good friend to me, and as any rider will tell you they become part of your family. There are many disturbing stories of road safety regarding meeting a horse and rider whilst people are out driving.” She said drivers at times have driven close enough for her to touch them with her riding whip. “We enjoy riding our horses as much as other people enjoy their bicycles, vintage cars or motorbikes, but people don’t realise simply slowing down and

giving us two metres can save lives, including the people in vehicles.” A horse can weigh 500kg and a spooked or injured horse can jump through the windscreen or on the roof of a car, and cyclists and motorcyclists are also at risk. “If you are approaching on a motorbike, in a truck or with a trailer in tow, the noise can spook a horse and it can bolt sideways with fright. “To turn right we will point with our right arm outstretched and point left with our left arm outstretched to turn left.” A horse will hear a vehicle approaching from the rear, but won’t necessarily see it and modern cars such as hybrids are very quiet. Ambient noise like high winds or farm machinery also means the horse might not hear you which could startle it, and it may lurch sideways into your path before the rider can regain control. “Loud stereos and noisy blow-off valves or exhausts as you accelerate away can also cause a fright. Gently accelerate away once you pass the horse and don’t use your horn.” At a roundabout a horse rider will stay left the whole way around, even though they might be turning right — watch for hand signals. Marijke says riders need to remember to always wear a helmet and be courteous on the road. Don’t ride more than two abreast, or on the right of any moving vehicle. ‘If you are leading another animal always keep it on your left away from the traffic, and if at night wear reflective clothing and carry a torch. “It is courteous to give a friendly wave, smile or nod to motorists when they pass safely. If you face a negative experience refrain from rude gestures or shouting because this can lead to an altercation and startle the animal. “Be aware of everything going on around you and if riding in a group approach the road single file with the most experienced rider in the lead. Before crossing the road, get

Horses use their ears to focus on sounds and may hear something before you do so stay aware. Engine sounds give clues as to what type of vehicles are approaching and the speeds they may be travelling. “Always respect private property and

Ultimately, if everyone respects each other, rides and drives in a safe manner and pays attention to other road users, we can all enjoy ourselves and certainly have way less unnecessary accidents or incidents.”

Carterton local Helen Dew is passionate about growing food and her community. She has spend most of her adult life being self sufficient and she’s done it all close to town, on a quarter acre block, proving that you don’t need a whole farm to live with nature.

“M

y husband and I started here 60 years ago on a bare section close to town, and we’ve built the garden up between us. Now I’m practically self-sufficient allyear round. The land is central to my life. I’ve always been into gardening, so was my husband. He passed away about four years ago.” Helen eats and grows what is in season. At the moment, in August, she’s harvesting: leeks, carrots, parsnips, kale, silverbeet, yacon, radish, salad greens and citrus fruits. She also freezes and bottles her produce and dries her own fruit. “When you stay in one place for a while, that pays off with production. Your soil improves. I’m really into looking after the soil and rotating crops.”

Helen is committed to being chemical free and uses animal manure, mulch, worm farming and Bokashi composting, a process where inoculated bran is used to ferment kitchen waste into a nutrient-rich tea for plants, to keep her soil healthy. Helen’s ultimate vision is to have her community grow and share their produce together. “Sharing the garden’s abundance encourages interaction among friends and neighbours. Growing locally reduces our carbon footprint, less ‘food miles’, less packaging — and helps to pass on basic skills, thereby building community resilience.” Around the Wairarapa, Helen is

involved in many local initiatives. One is the Local Growers’ Group, a collective of local gardeners who sell their fresh, spray-free produce together at the Carterton Farmers’ Market, the group’s stall is rostered on and shared. “The farmers’ market is a really important part of my local activity, so I try to go weekly. I want to make a contribution and I meet so many interesting people at the markets, not just locals. There’s a lot of new people coming into Carterton — we’ve got a very friendly, cooperative culture here.” Helen also sells seeds at the market, as she believes that gardeners get the best results when they use seeds that are locally produced, and acclimatised to the district. “It’s a political thing too — there’s powerful large corporates that want to control the whole food system — in some countries it’s illegal to seed save.” Living Economies is another big part of Helen’s life, as she is a founding member. “It’s an organisation of people who believe that it’s education and trust that promote community resilience, principally through the promotion of trade and exchange system services, which honour the fact that humans are part of a natural, living system.” So with an interest in alternative and complementary trading schemes, Helen is part of Savings Pools, Wairarapa Green Dollars and Wairarapa Timebank. “Savings Pools started in Denmark, as a response to financial stress in the farming community. It was farmers helping farmers,” said Helen. “Basically,

the pools involve a group of people saving into a common account and lending to each other, interest-free. Green dollars is something Helen has been part of since 1991. It is a local trading system that involves bartering or trading, using locally created currency. The currency is called ‘Wai$ dollars’ or ‘green dollars.’ Traders use an online system for finding what is on offer and for recording sales. They can also use Wai$ vouchers, a paper currency designed and printed in Masterton. DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. Keeping hydatids away With the farming communities involved visiting the field days, it is a good time to remember that the days of hydatids in New Zealand are gone, but we still need to be careful when feeding our dogs offal. Ace Products specialise in stainless steel electric boilers for offal and horse grain — both cookers are available in 63L and 94L sizes. “Hydatid is the cystic, larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, and has a life cycle similar to that of sheep measles. Unlike sheep measles, hydatid is a public health issue,” says manager of Ace Products, Mike Swanson. “Hydatid is found in farm livestock, including sheep and even humans, while the adult tapeworm occurs in dogs — the parasite’s primary host.” The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), declared New Zealand provisionally free from E granulosus in 2002, however, control measures continue to be in place to limit the spread of the parasite from being reintroduced into the country. “We don’t want hydatids back and taking care and cooking your offal for dog food properly, is an important part of helping keep the pest at bay and this is simple when you use the Ace cookers. “Horse grain is often cooked also and our machines are popular, because you can prepare larger quantities, rather than tiny batches, in a household slow cooker for your full-time work horses,

Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. Cleaning under woolsheds Mark and Megan Turton own Clean Sweep Woolsheds and use their ‘clean sweep machine’ to remove stored up manure from under your building with ease. “The innovative machine took us two years to design and get perfect, and two years to get up and running — it is the talk of the industry,” says Mark. “Removing the sheep droppings from under the shed makes for a healthier environment for the farmer, the sheep and the wool. “We thought of the idea one day, as a way to make life easier for sheep farmers. Peter and Jocelyn Jackson established their business TICK2DIG after having difficulty with trying to get underground cables located for Peter’s electrical contracting business. After using basic cable locating equipment in his electrical work, it became obvious from job requests that there was very little available in the Wairarapa on underground locating services. TICK2DIG decided to invest in ground penetrating radar, the first in the Wairarapa and possibly the Wellington area at that time. Working with the local district councils and the ultrafast broadband rollout in the Wairarapa, the company expanded their area of expertise; using Peter’s background in electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic fault-finding, to add a water leak detector, drain camera, infrared camera, more comprehensive cable fault locating equipment and a concrete scanner. TICK2DIG has been contracted to Power Co, Downers, all three local councils and their contractors, many households along with farmers and businesses in the Wairarapa/ Wellington region. Our services have been used to find reinforcing in concrete structures, gravesites, water leaks and drains etc.

Fewer livestock available

The remaining livestock available for processing for the rest of the season will be less than in any of the previous five seasons, according to a forecast by Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Economic Service. The analysis by B+LNZ shows dry conditions and strong prices for lamb, mutton and beef in the December quarter of the 2017-18 season drove high processing volumes. “International demand for lamb and mutton remains strong, particularly from China and the USA — New Zealand’s largest and third largest single country markets for sheepmeat,” says Andrew Burtt, B+LNZ chief economist. The average value per tonne for lamb, mutton and beef exports were at record or near record levels in the December quarter. The forecasts for lambs available for processing will be up 1.3 per cent on the previous season. The number processed in the December quarter was up 13 per cent, leaving 2.1 per cent fewer lambs for the remainder of the season, compared to 2016-17. The estimated number of sheep available for processing in the January to September period is down 17 per cent. The total number of sheep available for mutton is forecast to be down 6.0 per cent, however, 15 per cent more were processed in the December quarter, which is a record for the period. Additionally, Australian sheep meat

exports are forecast to decline in 2018. Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has projected Australia’s lamb exports to be down four per cent and mutton exports down six per cent. Excluding IntraEuropean Union trade, Australia and New Zealand account for approximately 90 per cent of international sheep meat trade. “The total number of cattle available is estimated to be even with the previous season, but down 3.7 per cent on the five-year average — 15 per cent more cattle were processed in the December quarter, which means 4.7 per cent fewer cattle are available for the rest of the season,” says Mr Burtt. “Cows and bulls processed were up 33 per cent and 23 per cent respectively. The dry conditions for some dairy producing regions drove some of the increased cow processing, as farmers managed their feed stocks for the rest of the summer. “The dry December quarter brought forward some of the bull processing for the same feed management reasons. The number of bulls processed has been generally increasing in recent seasons.” B+LNZ estimates there are still 5.5 per cent more bulls available.
