A new report has recently confirmed the dairy industry makes a major contribution to New Zealand’s economy. “According to the report, dairy contributes $7.8 billion to New Zealand’s GDP and is our largest goods exporter. This is a timely reminder of just how important the dairy industry is,” said Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy. The repor t, titled Dairy trade’s economic contribution to New Zealand, was commissioned from NZIER by the Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand (DCANZ). “While the dairy sector has had a tough few seasons, in the year to March 2016 they still earned more than $13 billion in exports for New Zealand. “According to the report, the dairy sector employs more than 40,000 workers, and employment in this sector has grown more Minister Primary Industries Nathan Guy than twice as fast as total employment, at an average of 3.7 per DairyNZ estimates that farmers cent a year since 2000. have spent more than $1 billion over “The dairy industry is especially the past five years on environmental important in regional areas. “Since 1990 there has been a remarkable journey of environmental progress. Sheep and beef farmers have driven major efficiency gains — increasing lambing percentages by 25 per cent, and the lamb weight weaned by ewes by 93 per cent. What’s more impressive is that farmers have achieved this with 23 per cent less land. “We estimate that about one million hectares of steeper country is either retired or planted in trees, while a further million hectares of high quality land has been converted to dairy. With this efficiency drive it’s estimated that greenhouse gas emissions from the sheep and beef sector has decreased by 19 per cent.” Mr McIvor said he believed while sheep and beef farmers are Sam McIvor Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive focussed on being profitable and confident about the with environmental management, future, they are also focussed on measurement and reporting, while taking meeting their responsibilities to the into account the many environmental land and community. “We’re building issues that are specific to farms, tools and resources to support them catchments and regions.”

The steady progress the beef and lamb sector is making on environmental management issues was highlighted at Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s third environment conference recently. Farmer leaders from New Zealand’s sheep and beef sector have shared a range of stories, highlighting the steady progress the sector is making on environmental management issues. Sixty five farmers from around the country have been in Wellington to discuss the initiatives underway to improve environmental performance — and specifically to enhance catchment outcomes. “Those at the conference were some of New Zealand’s most environmentally proactive farmers and they represent the momentum gathering with farmers across the country,” said Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive Sam McIvor. This is the third environment conference Beef + Lamb New Zealand has run as a response to farmers looking for more help to support good environmental management on their farms. Mr McIvor told the conference that farmers understand their management of the environment is a key ingredient of their business and they know they are custodians of the land. “They also accept there are environmental challenges and finding solutions is as important for the sector as it is for rural communities, the wider New Zealand population and our trading partners and consumers.

technical writer so our work on the olive grove is part time. It doesn’t feel like work though because it gets us out of the office and onto the land,” Karen says. Of course the best and most delicious part of the entire process for the pair is the taste testing. “We enjoy sampling the new oils from the olives we’ve just harvested. We’re always experimenting with different varieties and blends.” Karen and Ian are members of Olives New Zealand. Each year their oils are sent to Australia and undergo rigorous laboratory testing to certify they are

extra virgin. Once the result is known, they are allowed to use the New Zealand Olive mark on their bottles. “This red olive mark informs the market that our products are certified for consumption,” says Karen. The couple also enjoy going to olive conferences and field days. “It’s a good way to meet other olive growers and share information. It’s also nice to know what growers from around New Zealand are doing,” she says. Last year Juno Olives took home 12 awards from the New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards. This was the highest number of awards given to

one grove. It was also the second year running they won the trophy for Best Flavoured Oil. Besides producing extra virgin olive oil, the couple also produce a range of flavoured agrumato oils. These are handcrafted by processing fresh olives and fresh citrus together at the olive press. “It is the traditional Italian way to make flavoured oils,” says Karen. The couple have no immediate plans to expand their olive grove by planting more trees. Instead, they are concentrating on increasing their olive production by following sustainable

grove management practices. Olives are harvested in winter and the couple contract Wairarapa Olive Harvesting Services to shake the fruit off the trees into a net below before being processed. Most of the product is sold through the shop on their property, through their website, at local markets and at retail outlets. They also sell bulk oil and olives to restaurants throughout the region. Although retirement is still a fair way off, Karen and Ian believe they have the best of both worlds and enjoy coming home to their haven beneath the hills after a day working in the city.

LLAMA BY ANN MORGAN Julie Insley lives with her herd of 32 llama on 26 acres of easy to flat land. The land was originally developed for horticulture with a variety of shelterbelts and Julie found the property perfect for her animals.

don’t farm my llama for fibre but as working animals. We put packs on them and pick rubbish up down on the roads, take them down the beach for picnics and use them for community events,” says Julie.

Julie grew up in the dairy farming industry and like most farming children had a lot of contact with horses. “I was involved in the horse scene and now I find llamas are really safe in comparison to horses. Llamas don’t

you want them to go in simply by moving your head or shoulder. Llamas in New Zealand were originally imported from England, Canada, the United States and Chile. Although they originated in South America, coming from different regions around the world means there are more types including long, short or medium wool coats. “I have the short wool which are classic. The woolly ones need grooming and the shorter coat ones tend to be taller. “We use ours for charity work including rest home visits, daffodil day collecting and fundraisers.” A male llama is called a macho, a female is a hembra and a baby is a cria. The gestation period is around 11 and a half months and up to a year sometimes. “Some breeders want one baby a year and get the mothers pregnant again within two weeks of giving birth. We don’t do that to ours, we let them rest.” Llama is not an eating meat although they were imported into Australia for colonial settlers but it is said the settlers did not like the taste. “Those I know who have tried it have only ever tried it once — even dogs walk away. It has a very strong flavour.” Julie believes llamas are good for lifestyle blocks as they are low maintenance. They only need to be shorn once a year, and if you only have a couple this can be done with a pair of scissors. Toenails can need trimming either six weekly or six monthly depending on the genetics. “They love hills they can clamber up and they love to stand at the top and look at the view and see what is going on. They enjoy licking lichen off a rock and having rubbishy stuff to chew on like gorse and blackberry. We feed ours hay for roughage as we just have

grass.” One of the biggest health issues for llama is facial eczema, and this is now creeping across the country with the weather changes. “Check with your local veterinarian if there are any cases in your area in sheep or cows. There is lots of information online or call the Llama Association for advice if need be. “We feed ours zinc oxide mixed in their food when we know the season is approaching. Don’t take your eyes off facial eczema because they are very sensitive to it. “Like humans, they have the fight or flight instinct. Flight is their first defence. They can run fast but if they are cornered and feel under attack they will stomp their front feet. They used to stomp on pumas which were their main predator.” Julie says if any strange animal walks onto their land they will alarm call to let everyone in the herd know. “A friend came to visit with their dog and one llama was in the house paddock. The llama looked at the dog and slowly walked away. Five minutes later 25 other llamas came back to the house paddock to sort out the dog. They are an amazing animal with looking out for themselves.” There are approximately 1,500 llamas in New Zealand — they are kept more as a hobby. “They like working and getting out to do things — they don’t like being stuck in a paddock and being ignored. They like people and are very understanding of them. “It would be good if more people understood them as there is a lot to learn. Everyone should have a couple in their front paddock — they would learn a whole lot of new things.”

Love our forests Our ka-rearea does

Our native falcon – the kārearea is one of our most spectacular birds. You can see it on our $20 note. It speeds through the air at more than 100 km/h and catches prey larger than itself. It’s unique and phenomenal. It’s also threatened. Much of the kārearea’s natural habitat has been lost to farming and its numbers further reduced by cats, rats, stoats and weasels. Our plantation forests have become important breeding grounds for this wonderful native bird. They nest there, they hunt there, and they have found a congenial home among the exotic trees – along with many other native species.

Licensing for a future Fish & Game New Zealand manages, maintains and enhances sports fish and game birds and their habitats in the best long-term interests of present and future generations of anglers and hunters. Fish & Game New Zealand is everyone who buys a fishing or hunting licence — we are a ‘user pays, user says’ non-profit organisation that receives no government or taxpayer money. An important difference between Fish & Game New Zealand and other public organisations is that Fish & Game is run by councils elected by the people who buy licences. The major role of Fish & Game New Zealand is to protect the habitat of sports fish and game birds. This includes lobbying for appropriate environmental policies, developing and enhancing wetlands, providing advice, advocating for clean water and environmentally sustainable farming practices, and improving awareness of New Zealand’s outstanding but threatened freshwater resources. This work also benefits anyone who values quality water and wetland environments, and the many species that use these places. It is great that one of Fish & Game New

Rock phosphate benefits There are many phosphate products on the market and each one has different qualities. Kiwi Fertiliser search the globe for quality products, and with phosphate our choice is Sechura RPR. The natural product does not need to be manufactured with sulphuric acid to make it effective. Being alkaline, it is a great fit with our acid soils. To get the maximum effect, sulphur needs to be added as our soils are sulphur deficient. When sulphur is added, the results are almost explosive. Shane Hurley says he has applied Sechura RPR with compost on a number of occasions on his hill country property Pohonui, between Hunterville and Taihape. “I have noticed increased clover growth on the hill, and stock health has improved. The requirements for dagging have been reduced and I put this down to the levels of useful calcium in Sechura. Acid in, runny stuff out! P levels have built.” An experiment showed that yields on plots fertilised for six years with RPR (Perrott et al 1993) were higher than predicted from the Olsen P tests values for those plots. It was found that on average, after six years annual RPR application, Olsen values needed multiplying by 1.69 if an Olsen P response curve, generated using SSP, was to be used to predict yield. If an Olsen P was 20; it needed to be multiplied by 1.69 which would equate to an Olsen P of 33.8. The reason for the under prediction of yield on RPR fertilised plots is that plant

roots can access P that will be released from the undissolved RPR residue but this P is not extracted in the high pH 8.5 Olsen extract. Professor Ian Cornforth of Lincoln University commented that the gradual dissolution of reactive phosphate rock fertilisers supplies plants with available phosphate at a rate roughly equal to the rate at which pasture plants absorb phosphate into their roots, so that the

concentration of phosphate in the soil solution remains reasonably constant. “In contrast, phosphate fertilisers that dissolve rapidly produce a very high concentration of phosphate in the soil solution immediately after they have been applied. “This encourages a reaction between the fertiliser phosphate and some soil constituents that decreases the availability of the phosphate to plants.”

Pond crust gone for 10th the cost?

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell

Yep!

The mystery of pumps In most water reticulation or irrigation systems, you are going to need a pump, unless the water is from a pressurised scheme at farm gate or as some lucky farmers I visited recently in Middlemarch Otago have, gravity fed from surrounding hills — a whole 160psi of it! Could this be why some couplings had leaking O-rings?

Call 0800 475 877 Forward Farming Consultancy For Complete Effluent Management New Zealand Distributor of Slurry Bugs

MERGE LIKE A ZIP DRIVE SAFELY

I often get asked about gravity for irrigation but there are a lot of considerations, enough for another blurb perhaps? Pumps work via energy transferred from the shaft to the water in the pump body. So what? Well the critical thing here is that energy costs money, pumping usually occurs over a considerable period and the wrong pump can, consequently, be a very expensive purchase! Just as Mum’s shopping basket’s engine has a different power curve to the farm ute, which is also different to a truck engine, so pumps are also massively different in performance and efficiency at the particular performance you require. Yes, you may get away with towing the boat with Mum’s shopping basket — for a short duration, but the fuel bill is going to be the highest ever and it can’t last. It’s the same with pumps. I often see pumps from clearance sales which have run a low pressure system, being

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

applied to a medium or high pressure system. After all ‘it’s a big pump isn’t it? The guy before was running way more gear than me’. Yup, but now your diesel motor is valve bouncing trying to produce the pressure required, and also the pump is not running in its ‘happy spot’. You could also be pressurising a lot of water, which is going nowhere due to different irrigation flow. Energy cost again! Actually the chance of buying the right pump from a clearance sale are about the same as a winning lottery ticket! One in a million. The best efficiency is usually somewhere around two-thirds full flow on most pumps. This is not maximum pressure, so beware of advertising stuff from certain companies saying ‘Max flow… Max pressure’. This does not mean you can get both at once. Even then some of the claims are at best, ‘optimistic’, as observed by our technicians. Buying a pump Using a reputable irrigation professional should avoid these pitfalls. 1. Ask for proof that the pump you are considering is the correct one! Pump curves are not so difficult to read and you can always ask regional council field staff or other professionals to help impartially. Irri-Max Ltd and others have an open policy about what the client is getting. Don’t allow ‘secret squirrel’ stuff. Look for the best efficiency point — is this the same as your intended flow? Does the pump have the ability to produce the required pressure at

reasonable input speed? Ask about the pumps Nett Positive Suction Head (NPSH). You might not understand it but a simple calculation is this — start with value of nine then subtract your suction height (pump above water), then see if the balance is larger than the NPSH value at your intended flow. Say your pump is 4m above water (not the best installation), then the NPSH can not be more than five, in fact even this would be a call to get some proper hydraulic engineering done to avoid disappointment. Probably pump techs will laugh at my equation above as there are more factors to it than this, but my intention is merely to give the layman some warning signs of what may work or not. NPSH available varies massively from pump to pump! 2. Have you the right of return if it doesn’t meet specs? What is the cost of this ‘experiment’? eg you may have to change mounting points, flanges, engineering, etc. if it doesn’t work and you need to fit another model. Don’t buy a pig in a poke! 3. Pressure gauges: Insist the pump has a pressure gauge so you can verify the promised performance on your system. 4. Is the suction system large enough? Avoid the ‘thick shake with small straw effect’. 5. Irri-Max Ltd have been importing and supplying irrigation and effluent pumps for more than 20 years. Please contact Clement (Clem) Powell on 0800 426 296 for more information.

Solving break-fencing difficulties CARRY-MATE, a specifically-designed electric fence carrying system, enables farmers and lifestyle block holders to work safer and smarter, saving time and money. Doug Harrison’s vision for CARRYMATE came through experiencing difficulties setting up break-fencing. “It occurred to me that although every farmer was handling the storage, transportation, deployment and retrieval of the pigtail standards in their own way, there needed to be a safer and more efficient, systematic way of managing a chore that is done so frequently on so many farms,” he said. Doug invented a carrying system that would be strong enough to survive everyday farm use but also be as light as possible with a comfortable handle. “It needed to be easy to use as a carrier, easily store standards without double-handling and without standards getting tangled, and able to be used with a fence reel. “Most of all it had to efficiently attach to a farm vehicle without adversely affecting the vehicle’s balance, while keeping transportation as safe as possible.” CARRY-MATE’s lightweight, versatile mounting system easily mounts onto most farm vehicles including motorcycles and ATVs. The system enables quick loading and safe transportation of electric fence standards and reels. CARRY-MATE can be unclipped from the vehicle mount for paddock use. It can also be hooked on

Recycling the natural way by Dean Hoyle

The NaturalFlow wastewater system is revolutionising domestic water waste and sewage treatment processes in New Zealand using a power-free aerating process as opposed to mechanical pumps. NaturalFlow harnesses Mother Nature’s recycling processes in an enclosed ecosystem that simulates the natural forest floor. Waterflow New Zealand Ltd marketing manager Dean Hoyle explains: “Nature is one huge recycling mechanism, and what our system does is harness those natural processes and forces that have been quietly working together for thousands of years to break down and decompose waste all around us, to treat and break down your wastewater until it is perfectly safe to be reintroduced into the environment.” Waterflow NZ spent almost a decade researching and developing the NaturalFlow system before integrating

it into the New Zealand market. Homeowners from Cape Reinga to Bluff now have access to advanced water treatment solutions that are synonymous with clean, green 21st century ideals. The system uses vermiculture to reduce solids by up to 95 per cent, creating valuable watersoluble nutrients that can be recycled safely back into the environment. “No other system has the capacity to reduce solids by this amount. We are very much working with nature in our processes, keeping it simple, and using power-free natural aeration processes instead of mechanical pumps,” said Dean. There are no mechanical moving parts, reducing maintenance processes

Steps to joint health by John Arts

Part two: I was recently contacted by someone with osteoarthritis in her hands, feet and hips. After detailed analysis we made some changes to her diet and supplement programme. She was taking a supplement which combined fish oil and various antioxidants. While this product had many beneficial ingredients, the amount of active omega-3 was lower than I recommend. We added my stabilised fish oil at 6,000mg daily and higher doses of my chondroitin/glucosamine/ curcumin supplement. The results have been excellent. Her joints have much improved and she is especially thrilled with her feet, as these were starting to cause real problems. The key to improved joint health is being prepared to experiment and use a process of elimination. In this case she was taking omega-3 — we just changed the doses. She was taking a joint supplement — what we did was to use different doses and combinations.

There are many diet changes that can help arthritis. By far the most important are fats. Some fats are inflammatory and worsen arthritis. Some are anti-inflammatory and reduce the inflammatory part of arthritis. Others are relatively neutral. Animal fats are high in arachidonic acid which increases inflammatory eicosanoids and tend to push the body to an inflammatory state. This is especially true for grain-fed meat and dairy. Fortunately our predominantly grass-fed meat and dairy has a more neutral impact on inflammation. As a rule I would use lean meat cuts and moderate dairy fats. Next time we look at omega-3 and 6 and see the importance of maintaining a low ratio of omega-6 to 3. If you have arthritis you should work to a personalised programme for best results. • Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor
