FARMERS’ MARKET 9am – 1pm every saturday | 4 queen street, masterton

Accidents involving children on the farm peak over December and January, and account for more than 22 per cent of injuries to those aged 15 years and under. Seven children died as a result of an accident on a farm between 2013– 2015. In the 12 years up until 2015, nearly 20,000 children were injured on the farm. WorkSafe’s sector leader Agriculture Al McCone says children are a vital component of farming family life and it is important this tradition continues. “We do not want to stop children having fun on the farm or helping out mum and dad with jobs, however farmers are responsible for ensuring children are not put at risk. Managing the risks for children is different from managing them for adults,” said Mr McCone. “Many risks can easily be managed by, for example, using vehicles suitable for passengers, fencing artificial ponds, covering pits or even creating ‘safe kid zones’ in dairy sheds, or working together with neighbours as farmers have always done. “This means farming parents can still keep their children safe during busy work times.” Parents or carers should lock doors to stop children getting into areas they shouldn’t and remove keys from vehicles children aren’t to drive. “Even if you have safety guards on

Keeping kids safe on the farm is vital

machinery, these may still have holes small enough for children to put their hands through. Many farmers were used to working alone for much of the year, but it was a good idea to think about health and safety when children joined them on the farm,” said Mr McCone. All three deaths involving children aged between 5 and 15 since 2013 involved a child operating a quad bike. “Only those trained and experienced should operate a quad bike,” said Mr McCone. “Quad bike riders under 16 years are two and a half times more likely to be injured compared to drivers aged 16–34 years old.” Visit saferfarms.org.nz for guidance on keeping children safe on farms.

Over the cattle stop feature What’s happening over the cattle stop? As any farmer knows, the answer is — ‘everything!’ — as you can see in our light-hearted front page cartoon. This January the Northern Farming Lifestyles is a little different, as we’ve matched all of the

top agricultural support businesses between our covers with a bustling rural scene on page one. The aim of the game is to match the numbers next to each little image of Kiwi farm life to the businesses who exemplify them.

Aerial checks for kauri dieback

If YOU are reading this Newspaper, so are Thousands of others. Our advertisers need to talk to them and we want YOU to talk to our advertisers!

A new round of aerial checks for kauri dieback disease is due to get underway shortly, this time over the Coromandel Peninsula, Hauraki and central Waikato. It follows a series of flights last year which targeted western areas of the region. The latest surveys, between January 23 and February 28 for Waikato Regional Council will be using a fixedwing plane. “Kauri dieback has already been found in our region on the Coromandel Peninsula at Hukarahi and within the Whangapoua Forest,” said biosecurity officer Kim Parker.“This latest round of checks is about casting our net wider, from Hamilton to the Hunuas across to the Coromandel and down to the Kaimais. On such a large landscape, kauri dieback symptoms are more easily spotted from the air, so an aerial survey is the most efficient way for us to check the state of health of stands of kauri. It’s crucial that we stop the spread of this crippling disease which attacks our amazing kauri trees.” Kauri dieback is caused by a microscopic fungus-like organism called Phytophthora agathidicida. The disease infects kauri roots and damages the tissues that carry nutrients and water within the tree, basically starving the tree to death. Other kauri dieback symptoms include bleeding around the roots and lower trunk. It kills kauri of all sizes, from the smallest of seedlings to the mightiest of giants. Once a tree has the disease there is no cure. The latest surveys will be carried out for the council as part of the National Kauri Dieback programme, and

involve cooperation with the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Department of Conservation, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Auckland Council. A kauri dieback expert will be looking for yellowing leaves, canopy thinning and dead branches. The survey will be carried out over approximately five days from late-January to the end of February. The exact dates will depend on suitable weather conditions. People in the surveyed areas may notice a plane flying in a grid and from time to time it could circle. Any questions about the survey can be directed to 0800 800 401. Further information on kauri dieback is also available at kauridieback.co.nz.

FARMING MUMS The Farming Mums NZ facebook page as it is was established in 2013 as a means for farming mums to have a community to turn to for support and connect with each other via social media across the country. BY ANN MORGAN PHOTO’S COURTESY OF FARMING MUMS NZ

“I

n a lot of places the sense of community isn’t there for people due to the transiency of farmers and I am hoping that the page will help more people connect,” said page organiser Chanelle O’Sullivan. There are more than 8200 members on the page so far. “As a rural online community it works well because people are unable to have face to face contact so much anymore due to logistics and commitments. With this idea there is always someone online.” Chanelle says the code of conduct for the site helps keep conversations in control and this has been crucial in the success of the longevity of the page. The ladies build friendships and receive

advice on topics ranging from children and relationship issues, to farming advice, employee relations, animal care and even recipe ideas. As a result the group have produced the Farming Mums NZ Cookbook as a way to raise funds to support St John Ambulance and the Rural Support Trust. “Over time we had a lot of recipes being shared as ladies were asking for different meal ideas and we decided producing a cookbook would be a good option.” The book took approximately two years to produce. It is full colour magazine style with hundreds of professionally taken images from around the country. “I was picturing something simple, like a ring binder type book, but a lady on

the page is a designer, Nicola Satherley, and she stepped up and has done a superb job. Different photographers were involved and we hosted shared lunches and all made a dish to be photographed. It was a huge effort. “We are all really busy farming mums, there were a lot of late nights and coordination to make the project happen.” Nearly 1500 copies have sold so far and $5 from every book goes to the Rural Support Trust and $5 goes to St John Ambulance. “We did a vote through the page and found that these two organisations are largely underfunded but are the most crucial to rural communities. We want to make sure they have as much support as possible. “Rural Support is important for supporting farmers’ mental health and St John are a vital part of our communities,” says Chanelle. “Making the cookbook brought us closer together and having it in our hands as a finished product made it all worth it and we were approached by the national libraries to stock it.” The book includes a very diverse range of recipes including curries, baking and cider. “There are lots of good ideas and they are all practical and easy to make. They are great if you have shearers coming or the farm advisor and bank manager. “The next step for Farming Mums will hopefully be weekly blogs from various sources including accountants, vets, counsellors and people in education.

I want to turn being a ‘farming mum’ into a very positive thing and give the ladies the tools to have a positive life. “There is a lot of support in the group. As soon as someone opens up and calls for help people will step up. We had an incident of an accident where a farmer was missing. Others rallied to help find him, and they did, sadly he passed away due to a hunting accident. They then set up a funding page to help the farming mum in a tough time. “It is incredible how Farming mums from across the country have the community have come contributed recipes to create the Farming Mums NZ Cookbook together. A lot of people are dedicated to it. We have a team of eight administrators as the box to keep doing what you are well who do a hell of a lot of work. We passionate about. “I want to encourage also have our ‘Ask Daisy — Farming people to be able to continue with their Mums NZ’ facebook page and this gets passion outside and inside of their up to 10 posts a day which are kept farming life. Living rurally is a privilege anonymous.” Chanelle says the page is rather than a handbrake, it depends only getting stronger and there is a lot how you adapt to your surroundings of industry support. “Through the group and Farming Mum’s NZ can certainly I want to make sure everyone has equal help you do that.” opportunity and are upskilled and ready To order the cookbook go to the for what life throws at them. website www.farmingmums.com/ “Suddenly as a female you can go online-shop. from a career to having a baby and living rurally. BACON THE WAY IT USED TO BE BY AYLA MILLER Brian Everton and his brother Lyndon are fourth generation meat wholesalers and are carrying on the tradition with Cabernet Foods Ltd — the company behind Waikato based brand Pirongia Bacon.

T

he meat industry has been through many changes since Brian and Lyndon’s great grandfather arrived on the shores of New Zealand and established a meat supply and butchery in Wellington. Four generations later Brian and his brother began Pirongia Bacon in 2010 when the industry suffered a blow after the swine flu scare in 2009. “I always wanted to be a butcher and when I left school I worked on the family farm in Horowhenua for a year. Then I started working in the freezing works as a meat inspector,” said Brian. “I finally got an apprenticeship and when I completed that I worked for

Woolworths as a relieving butcher before going to Australia and worked for a butcher over there.” When he returned to New Zealand he and Lyndon saw a business opportunity and established the Cabernet Foods Ltd business in 2002 in the midst of a number of changes to the industry. “Banks were getting nervous with the meat exporters and there were a lot of changes domestically. A number of abattoirs were shut down. My brother and I saw an opportunity in an abattoir that has recently closed so we leased it through a lease to buy arrangement and set up a butchery of our own. “With our trade, meat has always been

a commodity but now consumers are becoming more interested in where their food comes from and meat brands have become quite important.” By about 2009 pork consumption dropped considerably but of course piglets were still being born. “Once you farm pigs they are on a breeding cycle and you can’t just turn them on and off like a tap. “When the world was hit by swine flu pork consumption reduced and there was a lot of media attention on animal welfare and farming practices of pigs. “We were holding millions of dollars of

pork in the freezers. Many of our historic bacon customers switched to using imported pork because it was half the value of New Zealand bacon. “Because of my butchery background I decided if we couldn’t supply the bacon curers we could go into competition against them with our own New Zealand pork to empty our freezers.” So Brian came up with a marketing strategy that would give the consumers what they wanted. This turned out to be traditional curing methods along with a paddock to plate story and so Pirongia Bacon was born.

Waimarama Seaside Resort

The meat is supplied by four pig farms located around the North Island in Wairarapa, Manawatu and Taranaki. Pirongia Bacon’s philosophy is simple. They aim to put the goodness back into food and produce a protein their consumers can purchase guilt free. “A number of other bacon processors were adding a lot of flavouring and water to compete as well as using imported pork. We saw an opportunity for a high quality bacon at an affordable price. “There is really no secret to how we make our bacon — it is just how bacon used to be made,” said Brian.

by Andy Bryenton

The counter-argument to progress is usually that ‘the original is best’. We’ve seen a brand new Mini and a new Mustang, but how about a motor vehicle that’s been stylistically unchanged since the postwar years? Classic Rolling Stones, or outdated rolling stock? Well, the comparison to Mick and the boys is a timely one, because the original Royal Enfield would have been right up there with the Triumph and the Norton as the mode of transport for those original rockers back in the 1960s. Let the mods have their scooters, it seemed to say — this is the ride for a rebel. Time may have turned those curves and 19

chrome from cutting edge to charmingly retro, but the Bullet 500 and its Classic 500 counterpart have one thing that time can only improve — the longest production run of any motorcycle, ever. Part of that is down to the timelessness of the simple, cleanlined design. Part is down to the legendary, easyto-fix, hard-to-kill 500cc motor which chugs away at the Enfield’s heart. But another is the connection to India, that most exotic and dangerous of driving environments. When the Indian police force wanted a bike that could tackle everything from deserts to ice, policing thousands of miles of border and looking out for a billion people, they picked the Royal Enfield. Production of these bikes continues today in Chennai (which was called Madras when the Bullet was new). The topic of popular travel stories, beloved of backpackers, and still the backbone of the subcontinent’s bike fleet, the Royal Enfield name is carried on by a range of models available here in New Zealand for more leisurely touring.

Long production — the Bullet has been a big name in motorcycling for more than 75 years

Fuel injection may have replaced oldschool carburation, and Chennai is a long way from Redditch, but the familiar note of the Enfield remains as English as county cricket and apple cider. After all, there’s something about saddling up a real vintage-styled classic to take a trip through the Mackenzie Country or out down the coast. Without the searing power of a racing bike to handle, or the bulk of an American cruiser, it’s a refined and dare we say gentlemanly way to soak up the scenery and become one with the moment. 6 10

The Indian connection with Royal Enfield goes back a long way. While it’s no big surprise that the subcontinent is a power player in vehicle design and manufacturing today — see Jaguar and Mahindra, for example — the Bullet 500 harks back to the time when the long shadow of English occupation still coloured the local motoring industry, giving us hardy beasts like the Hindustan Ambassador, actually a re-made Morris Oxford. The Bullet, however, flourished in the heat and bustle of India while other grand old English bike brands fell by the wayside back home. A classic story of the Royal Enfield shines some light on the appeal of this classic. The travelogue ‘Bitten by the Bullet’ by Steve Krzystyniak and Karen Goa details the journey of a motorcycle tour guide and a party of travellers seeking the ‘real India’ aboard a fleet of Enfield machines. The entire book has been presented as a radio play, and makes for some great summer listening. Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of pipelines Pipelines are those expensive things you have to have to convey water or other fluids (or gases) and best bought at cheapest possible price — correct? Wrong! If you consider it, they are often difficult to alter if the system is incorrect. All liquids and gases moving along a containment vessel have pressure loss due to friction from the walls and turbulence from various changes in the shape or direction of the vessel. Temperature of the liquid also has a bearing, but let’s keep it to the most basic issue of pressure loss. Also some things which can be done to cut down on the turbulence including long radius bends instead of tight bends, welded fittings in place of threaded sockets, etc. One of the biggest mysteries for amateurs is the relationship between pipe sizes and friction loss/flow rate. In a nutshell, the friction loss multiplies as the pipe size reduces — they are not proportional! Often a bargain price for next-sizesmaller pipe has a major negative impact on the efficiency of the system. As a scenario: Consider a small block irrigation

scheme of 4ha. The well and shared pump are 200m into neighbouring property and the most distant hydrant on the block is a further 300m, making maximum delivery length of 500m. The flow required is 300L/min. At this point it doesn’t matter what type of irrigator is used, seeing as we’re only considering the pressure loss in the main pipeline. Sizes discussed will all be internal to avoid confusion between PVC, LDPE and MDOD pipe options (never mind aluminium). If 3" pipe were used the friction/ pressure loss could be 9psi for the full distance, if 2½" used could be 22psi loss, 2¼" could be 50psi loss, and good ole 2" alkathene could be 87psi loss! This is without the pressure required to run the irrigator or allowing for rising ground, etc. If 2" alkathene were selected for this job then the pump would quite possibly need to be

14

7.5hp larger than if 3" pipe were used. Rather a sober consideration for a small system and a great energy waste which could easily be avoided. 3

Steps to joint health by John Arts

Part one: Osteoarthritis can cause anything from mild discomfort to seriously restricting quality of life. While medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs provide predictable results, nutritional therapy is more unpredictable. Experimentation is important. Some people find their arthritis is greatly influenced by diet while others less so. I generally recommend that people keep clear of common citrus fruits and acidic fruits in general. I am helping one person who by trial and error has found she is very sensitive to strawberries. I am not sure why but small joint arthritis, especially hand joints, seem to be more sensitive to acidic foods. I start most people on an anti-inflammatory diet. The key components are to reduce inflammatory fats, reduce sugars and refined carbohydrates. We target antiinflammatory oils, appropriate protein sources and increase antioxidant dense plant foods. Over the next few columns we will explore the specific components of this type of eating. Not

only will it help joints but is excellent for general health. With supplements, my general approach is to start people on a programme that is most likely to get a positive response in six to eight weeks. I like to keep things simple and usually start with high doses of Omega-3 fish oil for its anti-inflammatory function. To this we to add 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin sulphate, 1,500mg of glucosamine sulphate and 200mg of a 95% bioavailable curcumin (turmeric) extract. In some cases, especially spinal arthritis, I add antioxidant complexes and extra magnesium to relax tissue surrounding the joint. We will maintain these high initial doses usually for one to three months before reducing. Most people start to notice the difference after six weeks. Feel free to contact me for more information. Farmers question rates process Federated Farmers says the farming sector across the board is questioning the priorities and fiscal discipline of New Zealand’s councils as it says rates takes continue to outstrip cost indexes. Analysis by Federated Farmers released just before New Year shows the Consumer Price Index went up 21 per cent between 2006–2016. Local authorities have argued the Local Authority Cost Index is a fairer measure of cost pressures on local government, and that went up 33 per cent during the past decade. Farming advocates say both measures are dwarfed by the average 77 per cent hike in rates by 13 city, 54 district and 11 regional councils. “The ongoing trend of rates to rapidly outpace inflation is greatly resented by farmers, for whom council bills can be a significant component of their farm costs,” said Federated Farmers local government spokesperson Katie Milne. The organisation has put in an enormous amount of time and effort this year working to ensure that councils’ plans for waterways and other environmental issues are practical, fair and based on science and evidence. “But that’s matched by our submissions and lobbying on council costs, and the tendency of some councils to get carried away with growth plans and ‘extras’ with not enough recognition of the impact on the ordinary people and businesses footing the bill,” Ms Milne said. The level of concern in the rural sector about council costs and activities could well be the reason why rural and provincial voter turnouts in the October elections were significantly higher than in metro centres. Rural voting around New Zealand was an average of 49.8 per cent, while the metro average was 41.3 per cent. While a number of councils have reined in spending, Federated Farmers wages an ongoing battle within many

Katie Milne, Federated Farmers local government spokesperson

districts about rates burden unfairness, such as when revaluations push up rural property values. Land and improvement values can have little or no bearing on the property owners’ consumption of council services in relation to others. Yet some councils are reluctant to use tools such as annual charges, differentials and rates remittances to smooth out big rises in the face of factors such as farm incomes taking a severe buffeting this year. Other councils put up the rates to fund ‘growth initiatives’ and tourism, but overlook the fact that farmer businesses are also significant employers and drivers of district wealth, and it may be just as pertinent to progress to keep their rates bills down. “Farmers are used to cutting their cloth according to prevailing conditions and Federated Farmers will continue to work hard to remind councils they should do the same.”

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd) 57
