Federated Farmers climate change spokesperson, Andrew Hoggard, says “we need a clear roadmap to a low net emissions economy and a long-term plan of action that endures political cycles. “New Zealand should not lock itself into an inflexible approach that disadvantages us more than other nations. In the decades to 2050, we will also be grappling with the major cost implications of an ageing population. We must have regard for the impact various ‘net zero’ options would have on emissions prices and on GDP, jobs and incomes.” In its submission on the Zero Carbon bill, Federated Farmers said the best option of the three put forward in the ‘Our Climate Your Say’ discussion paper was the ‘two baskets’ approach that focussed on reductions in long-lived greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide) while stabilising shortlived emissions (methane). “New Zealand’s primary industries earned 64 per cent of our total merchandise export income in 2017/18, not to mention the several billion dollars of food produced for domestic consumption. We have an unsubsidised but highly efficient agricultural sector, which is markedly exposed to competition from moderately to highly subsidised producers in other nations,” says Mr Hoggard. “Successive governments have worked hard to remove barriers to trade. It would be counterproductive for future governments to impose costs on our producers that would undermine those trade gains. “The wrong policies could reduce our emissions-efficient food production, a gap that will be filled by much less emissions-efficient producers overseas. We lose economically, and so does the planet in terms of global warming and climate change.”

Andrew Hoggard, Federated Farmers climate change spokesperson

The Federation’s submission said regardless of which 2050 target is adopted; agricultural biological emissions should not come under the ETS until cost-effective mitigations are available to farmers and our international competitors make similar moves. It also noted the great potential for forest and other woody vegetation to sequester carbon, including the establishment of new commercial forests, farm woodlots, shelter belts, slope stability, erosion control planting and riparian planting. “We are very concerned about the potential for climate change policy to drive large-scale land use change from sheep and beef farming to forestry, when it is farming that underpins the social, economic and employment viability of rural communities.” The notion that foresters will want to plant on marginal land is highly questionable. “Resource management, health and safety and economic factors are shifting new commercial forestry planting to land that is easy to maintain, and close to transport and processing infrastructure — the sort of land currently farmed.”

As the world supply of tropical hardwood diminishes, there is exciting potential to use and export pine timber for outdoor construction. Treatments, such as acetylation or heating, make pine much more durable and hard. Our plantation pines are also excellent at capturing atmospheric carbon. A mature pine captures nearly three times as much carbon as an indigenous tree twice its age. LOVE OUR FORESTS

Enterprise to commission a report by a respected Chinese regulatory expert on the pathway to market. This report will be provided to key manufacturers when it has been completed. “In the last three years to improve consumer safety, there has been a major tightening of the rules and regulations governing food and traditional medicines in China. This has included tighter standards for overseas suppliers. As a result, New Zealand velvet producers have had to create clean areas in their deer sheds and to meet tougher cold chain requirements. In China, velvet processors have had to make similar upgrades — some have built completely new factories.”

A major new Chinese super ministry is being established that is expected to have regulatory oversight of the trade in traditional medicines and manufactured health foods. Until the new regulatory regime is operating, manufacturers will be uncertain about the rules that will apply to their operations. “A further unsettling factor has been the recent clamp down on importers for importing illegal products and for evading customs duties. Some smaller velvet importers have been prosecuted,” he says. “Larger, reputable importers say this will be a good thing in the longrun for the reputation of imported velvet and particularly for New Zealand. It will tidy up the industry.”

Long-term prospects for New Zealand velvet in the major Asian markets are looking positive with an explosion in demand for consumer-ready velvet-based products in Korea. “Ten years ago this product category didn’t even exist,” says Deer Industry NZ Asia manager, Rhys Griffiths. “In the past six months, 23 new velvet-based healthy food products have been launched in Korea — the majority of them using New Zealand velvet. “Yuhan Pharmaceuticals, which signed a memorandum of understanding with DINZ last year, is now a major player in this market. Their impressive New Origin concept store/cafe in Seoul features recently launched products that contain New Zealand velvet and deer farm imagery on large video screens inside.” Mr Griffiths says the Chinese market for velvet has yet to make the leap into consumer-ready healthy food products, but many manufacturers are aware of what has happened in Korea and believe it can be repeated in China. “The main barrier is a lack of confidence in the path to market for consumer products based on New Zealand velvet. These products cost millions of dollars to develop and market, so manufacturers need to be convinced they are not infringing a rule or regulation along the way.” To provide confidence to potential customers, DINZ is working with some exporters and New Zealand Trade and

by Ann van Engelen The dream to have a healthy lifestyle led Rick and Denise Dry to move away from the city and create a rural experience for their family.

“W

e wanted to have the holistic country experience for our children so they could learn to appreciate nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city,” says Denise. Rick and Denise, have a blended family of five children and decided to grow their own vegetables. “I grew up predominantly in Pahiatua and Rick is from Upper Hutt. We bought this house incorporating a large paddock in the rural zone. When we moved here, I had limited gardening experience, and through people in the community giving me guidance, I have managed to produce wonderful fruit and vegetables. “The community have helped me think about what I am doing with my growing project. We realised life is more about wellness, being spray-free and homegrown and that it is important for mental

and physical health as a lifestyle. I love cooking, make home-made stocks and avoid buying processed foods. We evolved to selling our produce because our garden was growing plentiful, and we had excess that we froze or gave away. “Being able to provide food for local people in an affordable way, became our goal and I am looking at developing a brand called Home Cottage Wellness. I am a doTERRA wellness advocate and sell essential oils — this works in well with us. We use the oils ourselves for health, cooking and making cleaning products rather than using chemicals. “We really love the lifestyle and are juniors starting off in the gardening world. Hopefully, we will be able give others guidance — just like others have helped us. Our vision is to ensure, that how we live is environmentally considerate of our planet, and what we

are putting in and around our bodies is holistic. We aren’t perfect but are moving toward consciousness of planet care. “What is now the garden, was a paddock and we introduced raised garden beds and seaweed fertiliser because the ground has a lot of clay. I have found straw amazing to keep the moisture and worms in. Denise says the main thing was water and because they have a bore this helped. “Different farmers down our road pop over and have a look at the garden and say do this or do that, and all their advice has really helped. The multigenerational knowledge of the land has been incredibly valuable and better than any garden book. “I grow from herbs and vegetables from seedlings and have planted a mixture of fruit trees including pear, citrus and chestnut. “Teaching the children has been amazing because so many live on digital devices for entertainment nowadays. Rick and I both worked in the IT industry, and we were very much a family prone to picking up devices, and now we are moving toward removing them. On Saturdays, the children help to set up the stall, and we sell out every week. I have recently planted 600 more plants as demand is more than we thought, so like anything it will be ‘jump each hurdle’ as it comes and getting a bit of a feel for what we are doing at each step.” Denise says it is not about being a large producer — it is about being involved in the community and giving people good produce.

“People are crying out for healthy choices and to know where their food is coming from, with no pesticides and chemical additives. I plant higgledypiggledy, and I fell over the success by accident. The future is being about supplying more product, and I would love to be able to deliver fruit and vegetable boxes to people. “The balance of feeling like we are contributing to the community and not running an operation that is too hard is important. by Ann van Engelen Grant Engel grew up on a dairy farm in the Wairarapa, and during those years, bees meant avoiding stings and having honey on his toast. The busy little insects became one of the biggest inspirations of his life and have become his livelihood.

N

ow based in Kerikeri, Grant is the founder of Revolutionary Beekeeping — a mobile stainless steel harvester that enables beekeepers to extract honey straight from the hive as an alternative to the more traditional method of transporting frames from hives to an off-site processor.

“When I was young, we would go to Fieldays, and I was always inspired by the agricultural inventions and new technology on show. I decided that when I grew up, I would return with an invention of my own,” says Grant. “Years later I moved from Wairarapa to a dairy farm in Kerikeri and noticed there was a lot of focus on bees and honey,

QUAD BIKE SAFETY Concentrate on the riding. Look where you’re going, not where the stock are going.

Grant Engel and his daughter Belle work together looking after the children’s beehives on the family property

and I became interested in beekeeping.” Grant says taking honey away from the hive and processing it was much like getting a dairy cow and driving it to a shared facility where it was milked and then returned back to the farm. “I decided to create something easier to use because the process for harvesting honey didn’t make sense to me. I came up with the idea of putting each hive frame through a machine to extract honey quickly right next to the hive. Harvesting honey on-site also removes the ‘risk’ of spreading any

disease between hives — this has always been a concern for beekeepers.” In 2013 he entered his prototype in the Launch NZ category for products ready for commercialisation and launch to the market at the Fieldays Innovation Awards. The categories range from grassroots innovations through to small-to-medium business product launches and international agribusiness innovations. They showcase the latest developments in the agricultural industry that will shape the future of farming and primary industries in New Zealand.

“I thought something to do with beekeeping would be a bit left-field and new because most of the innovations I had seen were generally focussed on traditional agriculture. There wasn’t much out there at the time that really looked at time-saving technology or innovation for beekeeping and honey.” “My entry went on to win the Launch NZ category — receiving the award ultimately took the business to the next level and having the design on show put us on a good platform. “I believe the key to success with innovation is being passionate about what you do. I wanted to find a solution to a common problem. I knew we couldn’t keep doing things the way we were just because that was the way it had always been done.” He says a lot has changed over the last 10 years in the honey industry. “The amount of hives has nearly doubled, and biosecurity is much more of an issue. As an industry, we need to be constantly revisiting and re-evaluating what we are doing to make sure we are protecting our food producers, and the sustainability of our products for generations to come. “Revolutionary Beekeeping now has hives and beekeepers across the country, from Northland to Canterbury, with support from big agribusiness organisations including Landcorp and sustainable dairy farming fund Southern Pastures. “We have also expanded into collecting and brokering honey directly from commercial beekeepers, enabling them to make profit from their honey.

POP IN AND The honey is harvested on-site as this removes the ‘risk’ of spreading any disease between hives

“Our success is largely down to the fact that we are on the same wavelength as our customers. We want beekeeping that protects the health and sustainability of bees — it is really important to us. “Our daughters, Isla and Belle, are really curious and interested in bees too. They each have their own hive and little beekeeping suits, and they are always saving bees inside and letting them out. “Their favourite is honey on toast, that’s our daily ritual. It is really nice they have that appreciation of where honey comes from.”

Fieldays CEO, Peter Nation, says the Engels story is one that resonates with him. “Many families with young children attend Fieldays, and you see them walking wide-eyed through the Innovations Centre. It is fantastic to think that Fieldays is inspiring the next generation of inventors, and who knows what innovative products and new technology the Fieldays experience will spark in the future. “There is a lot of public interest in the story behind our food, from paddock to plate, and it’s time for agribusiness to tell that story.”

Also voted New Zealand’s most beautiful city 2017, Masterton is a photographer’s dream, with so many options and places for spectacular shots of people, places, animals and events. Whether you’re here for a short family visit, a girl’s weekend away, or a permanent resident— there is something for everyone, from experiencing the great outdoors to the more sedate pace of a winery tasting, to a visit to the museum or shopping. For cycling enthusiasts, the challenge of the Rimutaka cycle trail might be just the thing, or for an easier option taking a map and discovering the Opaki vineyards, groves and orchards on a selfguided tour would be a pleasurable way to spend a day. If hiking is more your thing, there are short and long trips to choose from, with various levels of difficulty, to enjoy the wild natural landscape. Loop tracks of around 30 minutes can provide a great experience for those new to walking, or you could take to a two to three-day tramp to views

from the alpine tops in the Tararua Forest Park. Other outdoor options in the area include swimming and surfing, camping and fishing, or even a round or two of golf. For the thrillseekers, you can take to the skies of the Wairarapa in De Havilland Tiger Moths for a scenic flight or aerobatics! For a more sedate visit for those wanting to take a more leisurely pace, a visit to the regions olive groves, wineries or breweries can provide a very social afternoon. Another must-do activity is to visit the Puhaka Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre and visit the popular white kiwi, amongst other native birds and animals. Family-friendly Masterton provides plenty of appropriate activities, and one

of these is a visit to the Alpaca Place where the alpaca are happy to wallow in your attention and even be taken for a walk. There is so much more to Masterton than the Golden Shears for which it became well-known and definitely worth a week-long visit rather than passing through.

DAFFODIL DAY FRIDAY 31 AUGUST 2018 ST

Since 1990 Daffodil Day has been bringing people together to support the Cancer Society’s work and raising awareness of cancer in New Zealand. Money raised during this annual campaign is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society and goes towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, education and awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected. Whether it’s buying daffodils, donating to street collectors or purchasing merchandise — every gift counts. Conducting and funding world-class research is key to the Cancer Society’s work in preventing cancer, and with the generous funds donated by New Zealanders, there has been significant progress made in cancer research over the past 50 years. The survival rate for many common cancers has improved by up to 30 per cent, and more than 60 per cent of cancer patients now survive five years or more. Every year treatments are getting better, and research is finding more results. More people are surviving cancer than ever before.

The Cancer Society also provides a range of support services locally and nationally, which include information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce the risk of cancer. There are many ways to support the Cancer Society by volunteering your

time, donating, fundraising or by raising awareness through your local business or school. This year Daffodil Day will be held on Friday, August 31 2018. Call 0800 CANCER for more information about how to help.

Choosing a professional adviser New Zealanders, especially those in the rural farming community, are known for their do it yourself mentality. However, sometimes it is necessary to get someone in who is trained in a certain field and this can be the difference between running a successful business and struggling. No matter what the task is, always have a list of three alternatives. Be it lawyers, accountants or financial advisers, it’s never a good idea to have all your eggs in one basket — especially if you’re a chicken farmer. When deciding, make sure to meet with the entire team who will be working with you. Sometimes businesses might send you their top performer for the sales pitch, and then you are left with someone entirely different to actually do the work. Question them as you would a potential employee. Ask them what their competitive advantage is and why that is relevant to you. Take note of their response and of the words they use — if they use cliched words such as service, quality, contacts, reputation, move on to the next one. Check references for each potential professional service and ask about their hourly rates. It’s important to agree on the financial aspects before they start work so as

to avoid any nasty surprises down the track. A good thing to keep in mind is how they develop their staff. If they constantly provide professional development they are showing commitment to their own team members. Ask them to tell you one thing now that has made the meeting worth your precious time and how many new clients they have engaged in the last 12 months. By keeping these things in mind, you are covering all your bases and should be ready to make an informed decision, saving you time and money in the future.

Research to reduce nitrogen

What causes osteoarthritis?

DairyNZ is leading a seven-year research project that aims to breed cattle with less nitrogen in their urine with the aim to reduce sector-wide nitrate leaching by 20 per cent.

by John Arts

“One of the key commitments of the Dairy Tomorrow strategy is to ‘protect and nurture the environment for future generations’,” says DairyNZ geneticist, Mark Camara. “A team of researchers is making good on that commitment by investigating the role of genetics in reducing nitrogen (N) in cows’ urine. The research involves thousands of cows on farms around New Zealand and scientists are developing breeding strategies and estimating the expected reduction in N leaching — potentially up to 20 per cent. “If we can breed dairy cows that excrete less N in their urine, we can reduce the amount of N reaching our waterways. That’s good for farming and good for our environment. “Previous research has shown that, in dairy cows fed N-rich diets, milk urea levels and urinary N rise together, but this environmental correlation doesn’t necessarily mean that cows with genetically-low milk urea that are fed the same diet as typical cows will have low urinary N.” If this ‘genetic correlation’ doesn’t hold up, selecting for low milk urea won’t reduce urinary N. “We don’t know if reducing urinary N would compromise other breeding worth traits through other, unfavourable, genetic correlations or improve them through

Part 2 Last edition we saw that osteoarthritis (OA) is mostly caused by the loss of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes. Their job is to maintain cartilage. If chondrocytes are damaged or die, they are unable to repair cartilage. The result is that cartilage starts to break down. Eventually, whole patches of cartilage are lost causing a bone-onbone scenario. While cartilage has no nerves, bone certainly does! While bone-onbone causes pain, much of the pain comes from misdirected inflammation. White blood cells that patrol the joint capsule respond to cartilage loss by bringing in extra fluid and a cocktail of inflammatory chemicals in a vain attempt to repair the cartilage. The result is pain, stiffness and in some cases visible swelling. My approach is firstly to adopt a nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory diet. This is high in antioxidants, omega-3 and other foods that reduce inflammation. We then add four compounds from supplements. The first is omega-3 fish oil usually between 4,000 and 6,000mg daily.

We then add high-grade chondroitin sulphate at 800-1,600mg. Chondroitin sulphate (CS) is the most important joint supplement. CS is an actual component of cartilage and adding this helps chondrocytes to work properly. The problem is that most joint supplements only contain around 250mg of CS. In most cases, I start clients on 1,600mg. We then add the same amount of glucosamine and a potent 95% curcumin extract from turmeric. As an example, I have one client with OA in his knees. This was bad enough to significantly impact mobility. After three months on a personalised programme, he is now able to exercise again. His partner had OA in her thumbs and shoulders and is much better. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. favourable ones.” Verifying these genetic relationships isn’t easy. It takes many measurements of urinary N, milk urea and other BW traits on related cows to separate the environmental and genetic contributions to these relationships. To take these measurements a hightech gadget developed by AgResearch is attached to free-ranging cows. It channels urine past a sensor and records the time, volume, and nitrogen concentration of every urination. Pairing direct urinary nitrogen data with indirect measurements such as milk urea and applying complex statistical models can then estimate the genetic correlation between milk urea and urinary nitrogen. “If it’s high enough, we can use milk urea as a predictor trait. If it’s not, we’ll have to find another way.”

Rural Building Good homes make good tenants by Jill Dickie

If chickens are happy, warm, and feeling secure they’ll repay with enough eggs from each hen to keep you in cooked breakfasts, pavlovas and baked cakes for months! Chickens like to have a regular, quality food supply, and also enjoy good draught-free shelter, out of the rain and hot sun. If they are free-range, the shelter you provide can be something as simple as a hay shed, implement shed, or a treeline, as long as they have somewhere to lay those precious eggs for you. It is possible to partially free-range your hens by letting them out for the afternoon after they have ‘done their duty’, bringing them back into their house at night, to safety from predators. The house should be secure from all weathers, and provide next boxes as well as poles to roost on at night. If letting them out isn’t an option, your hen house can provide similar accommodation, and a connected run gives them a place to scratch and pick at the ground as chickens like do. A run can be as elaborate as a netting compound complete with a roof to keep wild birds or cats out, or as simple as some sticks of timber nailed together, covered with chicken wire and windbreak cloth.

Another option, smaller again, is a mobile hen house. Built on skids or wheels, you can shut the hens in then drag or tow it to a nearby site, allowing them the freedom of fresh grass as they need it. It saves the effort of providing greens each day, gives the soil time to rejuvenate, and the hens can fertilise the ground as well. When a smaller number of chickens are being kept, accommodation is easily achievable with various coops available on the market, or easily build your own with timber and netting, as long as they have a dry and secluded

spot for egg laying. Other options, if you’re not so handy on the tools, is to recycle other items into what you need. A waterproof ute canopy, for example, is just about high enough for the chooks to pop under to shelter from the rain. Gathering some of those plastic drums, securing together, and cutting chickensized doorways in the fronts; converting an unused dog kennel or garden shed; even an unusable plastic water tank with a door for you and a door for them cut into the side! All it takes is a little imagination, and you’ll have eggs-axctly what keeps everyone happy!

“The association continues to grow, offering training, events and professional industry support. The fencing trade in New Zealand is significant, and the agriculture and farming sectors alone equate to considerable primary industry contribution, plus we see significant activity in areas of industrial, security and residential fencing,” says business development manager, Melanie Weir. FCANZ support those in the industry by lifting the profile of the trade, supporting best practice in safety, employment, workmanship and knowledge. FCANZ work in conjunction with institutes such as NorthTec, Taratahi and Primary ITO providing training courses to encourage qualifications for fencing as a career. For example, the level three New Zealand Certificate in Fencing provides knowledge and practical skills to repair, maintain and construct rural electric and non-electric fences or to construct and repair industrial fences. “It is great for those entering the industry to develop skills and knowledge and to help build a career,” says Melanie. Bouskill and the level three training was an excellent step to strengthening a career in fencing,” says Joseph. Shane is a four times Golden Pliers winner and world champion fencer and is part of the team teaching fencing techniques. The course is work-based, so Joseph and his fellow students complete a large portion of the assessment work on the job and can continue to earn a living and gain certification. The association also hold regular meetings and events to facilitate the exchange of information within the regions on new fencing techniques, health and safety, product feedback, pricing and technical information. “FCANZ keep members up-to-date with the latest fencing products, technical information, trends and developments — with access to best practice guidelines, templates and codes of practice. Access to NZQA knowledge and learning opportunities is available, as well as employment and recruitment opportunities. “This is all possible thanks to longstanding partnerships with WIREMARK, founding strategic partner, and Gold Partners, Waratah, Gallagher, Cyclone, Permapine, Mahindra, Steel and Tube and Hurricane.”

In for the long haul by Andy Bryenton

It’s hard to imagine a time before the white van tradesman’s office, mobile workshop, rolling tool chest and classroom for generations of apprentices, not to mention the weapon of choice for couriers facing the urban maze. There’s a classic recipe for a proper hard-working van, and it’s safe to say that relative newcomers to the scene LDV have hit the right combination of power and practicality to impress their target audience. When looking for a van to turn into a working partner, three things stand out — reliability, ease of use and comfort. The LDV G10 Cargo Van neatly ticks those boxes and then adds a bit more to more than justify its very tidy price. Those looking to balance the budget and still recruit a willing workhorse that will last the distance are already paying attention to this new contender. Addressing both performance and stamina, the G10 comes with a choice of two power options, either a two litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 165kw mated to a six-speed auto box or a two-litre naturally aspirated unit with fuel injection. Both deliver fuel economy figures in the mid-11 litres per 100km range, and both have been designed to be easy to service and hard to punish. When it comes to ease of use, LDV have listened to tradies and couriers,

who want massive cargo space, wide-opening doors both to the rear and to the sides, and lots of options for carrying different sized and shaped loads. That means an unimpeded 2.4 x 1.278 x 1.270 metre cargo bay, along with modern luxuries such as reversing cameras to help line up with loading docks and tricky spaces. It’s in terms of comfort that the G10 moves streets ahead of the classic old van layout. Gone is the rattly old ‘church pew’ seating of ancient vans, replaced with a car-like layout and a full multimedia system. That sense of refinement comes through to the ride as well, which is a far cry from the lurching, vague vans of the 1980s. All in all, this is a machine ready to become whatever it needs to — a courier’s runabout, a mobile workshop, a builder’s on-site office — it’s up to you. Moreover, at under $30k, there will be change for that signwriting!

Fleet force — the LDV G10 represents value for money for the working driver
