Located between Manurewa and Whitford, the dairy farm was generously donated by the late Donald Pearson. NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said the farm would be a vehicle into the future and will offer exponential opportunities in displaying a wide range of industries including, horticulture, dairy and sheep and beef operations. “This is not a money making exercise for NZ Young Farmers but rather an amazing opportunity to further our emphasis on engaging with students in Auckland schools to showcase the vast array of careers available in the Agri-sector.” Although details are yet to be finalised, Mr Copeland said he expected the farm to be a doorway to innovative technology and a masterclass in the future of farming. “There is enormous possibilities and we are excited about the partnerships this will bring across the industry to communicate the opportunities the sector can offer New Zealand’s youth. To have this facility in the heart of Auckland will play a significant part in the Ministry of Primary Industries target of attracting an extra 50,000 employees to the sector by 2025. NZ Young Farmers is constantly working with urban schools to sell a positive message around Agri careers and the farm will add stronger foundations to that message. “We will be able to let as many students as possible visit, explore and view the incredible opportunities this sector offers.” The gift itself was extraordinary, because Mr Pearson (who has no children of his own) had no formal relationship with NZ Young Farmers. “He knew he didn’t want his land carved up and sold off to residential housing. “His passion for agriculture and belief in the organisation to use it to bring people into the sector has left a legacy that all of the Agri-sector will

Terry Copeland, NZ Young Farmers CEO

celebrate for decades to come,” said Mr Copeland. Donald’s friend Bryan, and his father-in-law Graham, are keen to help set up the farm because they want to realise his dream. “Donald initially didn’t know what he wanted to do with the farm if he died, but he knew what he didn’t want to happen, which was to have it end up all subdivided.” NZ Young Farmers chairperson Jason Te Brake is excited about the opportunities the farm now afforded the organisation. “The gifting of the farm was an extremely generous donation by Donald, and one which will play a significant role in allowing NZ Young Farmers to continue to connect and develop the future people of the primary industries. The farm aligns perfectly with NZ Young Farmers’ strategic direction and complements the rewarding results we are already achieving through our school-based programmes.” The farm will begin trading under NZ Young Farmers from September.

Potato psyllid problem solved For more than a decade the tomato potato psyllid (TPP) (Bactericera cockerelli) has been causing headaches for New Zealand potato growers and the latest Future Farming Centre research on TPP control with mesh crop covers should be a massive boost for potato growers, consumers and the environment. Whilst considerable progress has been made with agrichemical management, the costs, both to growers and the environment are not insignificant. In a field trial comparing ‘full monty’ agrichemical regime, against three meshes with different hole sizes (0.7, 0.4 and 0.3 mm) agrichemicals had a total of 1,614 TPP. The meshes had four, five and three TPP, an astonishing 40,250 per cent reduction in TPP numbers under mesh compared with insecticides. “The result is utterly stunning, it is effectively complete control of TPP. In comparison, achieving complete control of any insect pest on crops with agrichemicals is nigh on impossible. That this can be achieved with a nonchemical approach is even more heartening as it also addresses the spectre of insecticide resistance,” said Dr Charles Merfield, head of the Future Farming Centre. Compounding the TPP result, mesh is creating a more favourable microclimate that is enhancing crop growth and yield, with total yield of mesh grown potatoes increased by 10t/ha from

SAFETY FIRST

84.5t/ha for the agrichemicals to 94.5t/ha for the best mesh, a 12 per cent increase. Almost unbelievably, the two best mesh yields exceeded the theoretical maximum yield of potatoes in Canterbury (potatoesnz.co.nz/researchand-development/potato-yield). The marketable yields were even more impressive with a 24 per cent increase for >60g tubers and 60 per cent increase for >125g tubers under mesh. “The yield results from this trial are astounding — the theoretical yield limit has been blown out of the water. Mesh has significantly outperformed chemicals, especially for marketable yield. There is everything to like about this for growers,” said Dr Merfield. “Were this not sufficient to get growers’ interest, the economics are just as amazing. Mesh is actually cheaper than chemicals — about $1,000 per hectare less, so when combined with the better yield, gross margin profit increased between 27 per cent to 75 per cent for mesh. If this is not a stunning win for the NZ potato industry I don’t know what is.”

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANNA HARDING

After working and living in Wellington, Stuart and Jan Abernethy were looking to get out of the city, live on the land and become more self-sufficient. In 2008 they came across seven acres in Carteron, with a patch of lavender.

“I

just knew this was going to be our property,” said Jan. Shortly after, their business Lavender Abbey was born and the first harvest was in 2009. “We had a few litres of lavender oil, which was very exciting, I still remember that day. When we got home, I thought what are we going to do with it? Suzie, from the New Zealand Lavender Growers Association held day courses, so I attended one and made hand cream, soap and lip balm, which I really enjoyed. I’d finally found my creative outlet,” said Jan. From there they started creating new recipes and now have a wide range of products. “I love coming up with new products that I think will interest our

customers, like our new menopausal range and expectant mothers’ range. Our most popular product so far is the Lavender and Magnesium Sleep Lotion, which you rub on the bottom of your feet before bed.” Their lavender creations are all natural and “nothing is tested on animals — just on hubby Stuart — and we don’t use sprays on the lavender. To date we have won two awards for our oil, two years running, so we’re working towards a repeat this year.” Stuart and Jan have over 2,000 plants and grow three types of lavender — the French Grosso, which is used in all of their products, has the biggest yield of essential oil compared to other lavenders. Then they grow two English

varieties, Pacific Blue and Violet Intrigue, which both have a strong but sweet and soothing aroma, suited for cooking and as massage oils. During winter, the plants are dormant and resting up for their growth spurt in spring, so Jan and Stuart use the time to plan for the busy summer season and catch up on paperwork. The crop starts greening up in October and flowers in November during which there’s a lot weeding to be done. Then in February, the 600kg flower crop is harvested and distilled into 20 litres of oil. The essential oil is extracted by a steam distillation process. The flowers are sealed in large stainless steel pots before hot steam is forced through, breaking them down and extracting their oil. The steam is then passed through tubing, which is cooled by a cold water condenser, causing the steam to revert back to liquid. At this point, the lavender water (hydrosol) and oil are separated into their respective containers. Lavender pure essential oil has many uses, including easing headaches, relaxation, as a sleep aid, in washing machines to freshen clothes, and as an ingredient in natural cleaning products. Hydrosol can be used as a linen spray, air freshener, face spritzer, sunburn soother and deodoriser for pet areas. Jan and Stuart put a lot of effort into keeping the place tidy over summer, as they open their farm to the public for the annual Pick Your Own Lavender event. It has been running for the last seven years and attracts people from all over the country. “Each year we have over 800 visitors for two weekends

in January — it’s pretty busy. People bring their children, elderly parents and some bring lunch and have a picnic in the lavender. We have the regulars who come each year. It’s great to see them return and enjoying the lavender. Our next Pick Your Own Lavender event will be 13,14, 20, 21 January, 2018. “We have couples wanting their wedding photos in the lavender which is really nice. Lavender is becoming popular for weddings for the bouquets and table settings — it’s not just “a reminder of granny” anymore,” said Jan. Groups also visit the farm and Stuart and Jan talk them through their story of how Lavender Abbey began and the

process of growing, harvesting and distilling the flowers. To sell their products, Jan and Stuart have an online shop, which has been running for over five years. They have also attended local and regional markets, mostly on weekends, for the last three years. “It’s a great feeling when people love our products and come back for more. We also enjoy seeing people having fun in the field on our picking days and some of them spend quite some time at the farm. “We’re proud of what we’ve created. We’ve made something out of nothing, which is exciting.”

hey have three children, Emily, Sam, and Phoebe. Amanda’s parents David and Wendy Fairbrother also live on the property which they originally purchased some 40 years ago. “When I was 9-10 years old mum and dad were primarily sheep and beef farmers and in the 1980s during the mohair boom, they embarked on having Angora goats that they imported from

Australia. Sheds were built and the necessary equipment was brought in to farm them. “They acquired a lot of goat husbandry skills but when the mohair industry declined they got out of having goats, but the infrastructure was still here.” It was her passion for goats and childhood memories that got Amanda interested in farming her own goats in recent years.

Amanda married Lindsey and he worked the family farm. Eventually David and Wendy built a retirement home on the property and the Goodman’s moved into the family home. “There was a long period of time of no goats — we had three children and I thought I might get a couple of goats. I went through the process because the children are intolerant to cow’s milk and got eczema and other issues. Goats were an obvious choice as they could drink the milk and a tin of goat milk formula was costing around $50.

“We had a few goats but no one else was breeding in the Wairarapa so we were winging it in our own way but mum and dad’s knowledge was a huge help. I joined the NZ Dairy Goats Association and we went up to Waikato and brought back a bunch of four-day-old kids and reared them. This increased the herd quite a bit.” The herd are free range but have access to big sheds. They are like a weather forecast — they head to their shed when the rain is coming. “You have to ensure fencing is up to scratch.

Goats are known to be very social and are often seen playing together

Every goat has its own a unique personality

Initially the fencing around our house wasn’t good enough and they got in and ate the garden before we learnt the lesson of keeping them securely contained,” says Amanda. “They have open pasture of clovers, wild plantain and grasses. The goat paddocks are kept as natural as possible.” The couple use Agrisea concentrates on the grazing and feed production paddocks on the farm. The company produces soil, foliar, turf, pasture and animal health concentrates for agriculture and horticulture.

“We use seaweed and lime on our goat pasture. Lindsey has been excited to watch the trials we have done and it has been interesting watching the worm activity. “We put in grasses for baleage and fresh hay specifically for the goats. They have baleage twice a day and constant access to the hay feeders. Whilst they are being milked, they have a special goat mix made up with seeds, grains, cereal and molasses. “They have a daily dose of a special cider vinegar and seaweed and that has proven to be very beneficial. They have

lick blocks and we add epsom salts to their water.” The couple primarily have Saanen goats due to the quantity of milk they produce. “We have added Nubians now as their milk is higher in fat content which is fantastic for making cheese and we have a few Toggenburg and British Alpine. “Goats have lots of personality. A couple were premature, Gracie and Willow, and we had to bring them. They are just as intelligent as having a pet dog. They are loving animals and absolute characters. One night at 3am, Gracie got out of her pen, out of the garden, through the cat door — found our bed and jumped all over us. “The herds have a ‘queen bee’ — herd leader and they come into the

shed in the same order each day. We now have 150 goats all up. One of the challenges is the little boy kids, we rear them as we can’t bear to get rid of them. This is not very financial but we pass them on.” They were originally going to sell the goat herd, but when they were ready to milk, the family had become completely attached to the animals. “To keep them we needed to find something to do with the milk to justify it. Living in Martinborough, the land of great wine, we decided to bring goat cheese to the region.” Amanda says it took a lot of research and paperwork for MPI to legally be able to sell the cheese. ADVERTORIAL

Keeping it local Fulton Hogan is a New Zealand owned business which was founded by Julius Fulton and Robert Hogan in Dunedin in 1933. Fulton Hogan started our presence in the Wairarapa in 1993. Our first contract was maintaining the State Highway from Mt Bruce to Upper Hutt with only three local employees and the assistance of local sub-contractors. Today, the Wairarapa branch employs more than 50 staff and currently maintains the Wairarapa Council’s network of roads and we also have aggregate businesses in Featherston, Carterton and Masterton. The company carries out private works, including driveways, subdivisions, concrete, drainage, grading, aggregate spreading, asphalting and chip sealing

works. With this work we have a large fleet of equipment which is maintained and serviced in our Masterton workshop that also carries out external mechanical works. We can supply different grades and sizes of aggregates to cater for a variety of farming situations. We offer no obligation quotes on tracks, roads and driveways. Our staff can provide a range of options to best suit the different issues you may have on your farm or lifestyle block — this includes drainage, road or track maintenance. Our experienced team can take care of all the asphalting, concreting and chip

sealing you may need completed around your property and can advise when your existing surface is due for re-surfacing. We believe it is important to keep tracks graded and maintained to a safe standard at all times, providing stock and staff a safe environment to move on. We suggest having a maintenance plan in place to keep on top of all your roading situations as this helps ensure any damage can be dealt with early and expenses can be kept to a minimum. Water is one of the main causes of damage and deterioration to roads. Keeping it away from the surface and free draining from the pavement areas also prevents excess damage in the long run.

Ensuring a property has effective drainage and that culverts are installed where necessary allows the water to come off the road easily, preventing flooding and roadway or paddock damage. For those properties with hollows on the land, Fulton Hogan often have hard fill as well as soil materials that can be placed in these areas on your farm. We are always looking for somewhere to place the excess materials we have from our contracts. This is ideal for filling in holes in paddocks, old drains, ditches and ravines. Fulton Hogan — versatile and knowledgeable and we don’t just look after main roads.

Hunt best bull calves

9

New Zealand’s very best bull calves that will produce the next generation of high performing dairy cows are being sought. With calving now underway, CRV Ambreed Breeding manager Aaron Parker says it’s time for farmers to get in touch with the herd improvement company if they have a top-notch bull calf hit the paddock. “Year-on-year we are carefully building a portfolio of genetics to suit a broad range of environments, conditions and farming systems to ensure New Zealand’s dairy industry is successful well into the future,” says Aaron. “If a bull is nominated for our breeding programme, and is successful, it is a lucrative source of income. The farmer becomes part of an influential group of breeders contributing to genetic diversity and the overall advancement of New Zealand’s national herd.” If a bull calf is selected for CRV Ambreed’s sire-providing programme, farmers have two options to sell their bull. A bonus is awarded if the bull is ranked in the top one per cent in New Zealand for New Zealand Merit Index (NZMI). Parker says elite bull calves are usually sourced through CRV Ambreed’s contract mating programme, but it is

through the yearly contract-free bull calf nomination process where more unique bulls are discovered. “We look for bulls whose daughters will be efficient producers and easy to manage for farmers. ‘Outcross’ or uncommon bloodlines are also preferred.” Southland farmer owners Lyall and Jan Hopcroft and contract milkers Nick Templer and Anieka Venekamp, decided to try their luck in 2015 with a son of one of their favourite cows, Jassie. Anieka said Jassie was only three years old when she had son Jasper, but she remembered Jassie as a heifer and she had an outstanding udder and temperament. “She would catch my eye every time I was in the paddock, then when her herd test results came in we knew we were definitely onto a winner. “We breed for udder, protein, temperament and capacity and she ticked all the boxes. She was the cow I was really hoping to get a heifer out of, so when Jasper was born I thought I would try him with CRV.” They have five cows lined up this calving season and will nominate their

Jassie produced son Jasper who was nominated for CRV’s breeding programme

calves if they are bulls. Aaron says CRV Ambreed is always keen to chat with farmers who haven’t nominated a bull calf before. “Even if one of your top breeding cows is in-calf for another breeding company, let us know about it so we can consider

the genetic value and let you know if we are interested. We might be keen to genotype a bull calf, even if we know we don’t have first option.” Nominate your bull calf by phoning 0800 262 733 or completing the online form at www.crv4all.co.nz/bullcalves.

Giving back to nature

CRUISING & CULTURE

Dunnys — and what we do during our ‘daily visit’ are a bit like that other subject our mother never talked about — we were given our potty training, the nappies were removed and from then on we did our own learning!

UNIQUE SMALL GROUP TOUR 14D DEPARTS 2018 JULY 30th Add-on Iceland - for details contact

DRIVE TO THE

CONDITIONS THIS WINTER

And since having our nappys taken off us we have all learned that ‘go and flush’ is what we do. Every day — or at least most days for most of us. That’s a lot of flushing. Imagine for a moment the immense infrastructure that our local councils have provided for this simple convenience — pun intended — where water is either captured in purpose-made dams or taken from existing rivers, piped for miles, chemically treated to drinking standard, and piped for more miles to our place so we can simply push the appropriate flush button — 1 or 2 — to send it for more miles to another treatment plant where it is again reconstituted chemically and piped yet again out to sea — or to a river — or somewhere on the planet! It is estimated that every one of us has flushed away 6,500 litres of treated water a year since our nappies were taken off us.

Composting Toilets No consents required Waste is turned into compost IDEAL FOR SLEEP-OUTS, TINY HOMES & OFF-GRID HOMES

Uses no chemicals Uses no water

No plumbing No smell

BOATS

Imagine the proportion of the council rates that we pay that goes to pay for our flush button convenience. But like so many other aspects of daily living the economic and ecological cost of the ‘daily visit’ has been re-visited. In 2001 a composting toilet was produced in the USA specifically for boats. They called it AirHead. Boats call their toilets ‘heads’ in recognition of the historic use of a simple plank at the head of the ship back in the sailing ship era. ‘Going to the head’ was sometimes a hazardous necessity. And the USA development used air instead of water. Air head. This was certainly a different way to go. The toilet employed a compost medium to process the human waste and it worked. The toilet is effectively its own treatment plant. No water, no pipes, no smell. It is not surprising that the concept has been accepted world wide and has spread from boats to caravans and motor homes.

Castle Court MOTEL

Off-grid living is gaining a huge following world wide and the Airhead toilet offers this community an economic alternative that is totally in tune with nature without involving the permitting requirements of conventional dunnys. These toilets give back to Mother Earth. They retain our body’s natural separation of liquid and solid waste and each is treated separately. Both elements benefit the environment when applied correctly as many tiny home and off-grid cabin dwellers are learning. Naturally.

The happiest kingdom of them all by Mandy Page

VIETNAM

“The crisp mountain air dusts my face as I look towards the soaring Himalayas. The vibrant blue peaks and the shine of snow — it just feels good to be back in Bhutan. “This small country nestled in the folded valleys between China and India is truly one of the happiest countries on earth. The government measures Gross National Happiness rather than Gross National Productivity, and the locals confidently wear their traditional garments while using computers and cell phones. Whenever I arrive in Bhutan, I stand and observe my fellow travellers as they climb off the plane, almost everyone pauses to admire the view. There is no being hurried into the terminal when one realises the natural beauty that has suddenly surrounded them. “In the spring of 2018 I will return again to this hidden kingdom, this time taking my fortunate passengers to the eastern end of the country. Few travellers get to Bhutan and even fewer venture into the eastern provinces. In this part of the country time has seemingly halted and although the hotels are basic, the experience of simply being there is extraordinary. The friendly people of this region embrace their Buddhist beliefs in a holistic way which calms the mind, body and soul of the weary traveller. “One of the best experiences in Bhutan is visiting

the glorious Phobjikha Valley which is one of three nesting sites worldwide for the black-necked Cranes. These cranes are so rare that the Bhutanese government has removed all human settlements from the valley floor in order to give the cranes their space. Electric lines are even banned so nothing can interfere the birds while they are in flight. When the spring breezes

blow the rhododendron blossoms across this spectacular land, there is nothing even Walt Disney could do to match the experience. “If you have the chance, please join me in April 2018 for an unforgettable trip to Bhutan.” Mandy Page works for Tours Direct and will be travelling to Bhutan in April, 2018.

This show explores the icy continent and the potential impact of climate change on it and us through state-ofthe-art immersive media, hands-on interactive models and first-hand insights from scientists undertaking worldchanging research on the ice. Far from Frozen was developed by Otago Museum in association with Antarctica New Zealand, the University of Otago and the New Zealand Antarctic Research Institute with support from the Ministry for Business Innovation and Employment’s Unlocking Curious Minds fund and is brought to Wellington with the support of the Deep South National Science Challenge. Science curator Dr Claire Bretherton says the exhibition uses the latest in virtual and augmented reality, holographic computing and animated projection mapping technology to bring Antarctica to life.

South Island Southern Wanderer Rail & Road Tour 12 nights 4th – 16th September 2017

An adventure by rail & road around the South Island is a great way to discover the history of our early settlers and the grand scenic beauty of the South. • Flying to Christchurch, join the privately chartered Silverfern Railcar. • Travel the Midland line through the Alps to Greymouth and Westport. • Journey the Southern main trunk line from Christchurch to Bluff. • Join the Taieri Gorge Train Dunedin to Middlemarch. • Visit Queenstown, Te Anau and Invercargill by motor coach • Scenic highlights include the Reefton Saddle and Buller Gorge, Caroline Bay and

“Combined with examples of the polar equipment needed to survive and work on the seventh continent, profiles of Antarctic scientists and hands-on, interactive exhibits, Far from Frozen will allow our visitors to explore the latest Antarctic science, to learn about our changing climate, and to gain a better understanding of the impact we have on our home planet.” Space Place will host a number of events associated with the exhibition including the NZ made documentary Thin Ice where there will also be a Q & A session and The 11th Hour, a documentary produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. Along with movies there will be two panel discussions — the first on July 23 features experts explaining why Antarctica matters and what their research is telling us about climate change; the second on July 30, featuring

advocates from organisations across Wellington, looks at how we can adapt to our warming planet. Deep South scientists will also help host the exhibition, giving a unique opportunity to discuss their research in person (keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details). Claire adds: “At Space Place our aim is to inspire our visitors to look up at the wonderful southern skies and to learn more about our unique place in the universe and Earth’s future. Could it end up like Venus, with a runaway greenhouse effect heating the planet to the temperature of an oven, or perhaps a frozen wasteland like our neighbouring red Mars? Antarctic science can provide vital clues to our planetary fate.” For more information contact Museums Wellington’s communications coordinator Tom Etuata on 04 894 7415 or 027 946 9564.

Managing urinary nitrogen on your farm

Yep!

How much can we learn from a handful of grass? The answer is both remarkably simple and incredibly complex — but thankfully, modern scientific techniques can assess the biology and chemistry of just such a sample to provide some clear-cut advice for adjusting farming practices. It’s all thanks to a Kiwi company who are leading the world. Raymond Burr from QLabs is a farmer first and a man of science in equal measure. From his early days share farming sheep and beef to converting a large spread to dairy in the King Country in ‘89, he knows the challenges farmers face in a constant race to improve their profitability. Raymond studied at Massey University, and his investigations into soil and pasture health with QLabs today would have amazed his professors back then. Then again, the foundation of what QLabs offer the farming sector is based on sound common sense. QLabs have been granted a patent on their latest form of herbage analysis, which can very accurately look at the nutritional content of even a small representative 500gram sample of grass and drill down into its composition. One major advantage is detecting levels of nitrogen, which cannot be stored by ruminant animals like cattle. This means a very accurate forecast of urinary nitrogen content

SLURRY BUGS: the biological answer to complete effluent management by Forward Farming Consultancy

Call 0800 475 877 can be built up — a valuable tool for evaluating efficient farm management. Qlabs patented method means that with a single test of a sample of pasture a farmer can fine tune and plan ahead for a number of factors. Environmental responsibility is one, but maximising the nutrition of every square foot of pasture is another — and that means better yields whether for dairy and drystock. Potential health issues can be nipped in the bud long before they become a vet’s problem. “The science may be high tech, but the principle is simple,” says Raymond. “Arm yourself with knowledge

and get the optimum out of your farm.” In the 1980s the rising plate meter was invented by a farmer, and accurate pasture budgeting soon followed. From the early 1990s we became proficient at growing more protein by applying more Nitrogen. It is time to move on with the latest patented method invented by an ex-farmer. Now for a relatively low cost, you can monitor what your ruminating animals are about to eat. Increasing efficiency will increase profitability and decrease your environmental impact — a winwin solution.

Doug Avery shares his powerful story of how he weathered years of drought and desperation to turn his farm — and his life — around. It’s a journey of emotional resilience in the face of what at times seemed a hopeless situation. Doug’s farm was depleted and so was he. Although Doug didn’t realise it at the time, he had severe depression. His story, he says, is common to many in farming who soldier on in isolation, slipping further and further into debt and desperation. Don’t miss this inspirational evening as Doug talks about getting life back on track — for him, his family and livelihood. Where do I start? Key questions asked are: when will my trees be ready for harvest, what is my estimated return and who will manage the process for me? Other considerations are: harvest crew availability, and risk areas for forest owners, particularly health and safety and environmental compliance. FOMS provides full services from forest assessment to harvest planning, harvesting, marketing and replanting. We offer a wide range of marketing options including commission based agreements, fixed price contracts, and lump sum purchase to suit your individual requirements and risk appetite. CARBON LOCKUP

1 tree

=

1 sheep

Planting forests is a simple and effective way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, while at the same time creating a financial investment for the future. Trees take surplus carbon out of the atmosphere and turn it in to wood. Just one 20 year old Pinus radiata tree will lock up all the carbon a single sheep will have emitted in its entire lifetime. One tree would also lock up all the carbon emitted by one beef animal in one year and 1.5 trees will capture a dairy cow’s emissions in one year. New Zealand foresters plant more than 50 million trees a year.

The whole nine yards by Andy Bryenton

For decades, Deutz Fahr have been perfecting their range of tractors to meet stringent European emissions controls while still delivering maximum power and performance. With numerous awards in their trophy case and a team of engineers to rival that of fellow German manufacturers like Mercedes Benz and Porsche, their claim to the title of top agricultural machinery fabricators has only been strengthened by the arrival of their latest offering — the ultra powerful Nine Series. Built on the premise that there’s no substitute for raw power — except raw power under precision control — the heat of the new Nine Series is an uncompromising 336 horsepower intercooled twin turbo six cylinder diesel. High injection pressure and computerised engine management deliver 90 percent of max torque well down the rev range, allowing this tractor to tackle even the most heavy-duty tasks when mated up with serious machinery. The on board computer system optimises injection for efficiency no matter if the Nine Series is moving from field to field or engaged in serious power harrowing, undersowing or cultivation. Front and rear PTO with multiple selectable speeds comes as standard, because efficient large-scale farming demands big implements. And it’s all

commanded from a cab which has been designed as both comfortable and intuitive, with controls easily at hand. In fact, innovations such as Deutz Fahr’s continuously variable TTv transmission mean there are less things for the operator to worry about — the Nine Series is also built with modern satellite navigation and mapping in mind. With the ability to conquer long days in the field comes the necessity to ensure operator safety and comfort — so extra care and attention has been lavished on making the cab of the Nine Series roomy and well ventilated, with acres of glass and a clear view down the sloping bonnet to make precise turning as simple as possible. In fact, it’s amazing how easy it is to place and handle such a large and powerful machine, even on uneven terrain in the field. This combination of power, precision and the ability to adapt to multiple roles on the farm saw the Nine Series win the ‘Golden Tractor’ award for design on its initial release — further tuning and fettling have only made it a better machine. In the order of high-horsepower tractors, this is the benchmark to beat.

Ready for anything by Andy Bryenton

The venerable Yamaha AG 125 has been a common sight on Kiwi farms for so long now that it’s almost part of the scenery. Simple, easy to maintain and able to take a lot of good-natured punishment, the little blue machine is easy to compare to other hard-wearing rural classics like the swanndri and the gumboot. As an upshot, there’s a whole generation out there who know how to ride an AG 125. Many kids from farming families would have mastered the diminutive single-cylinder bike with its distinctive knobbly tyres well before it was time to learn to drive the family car. And that means there’s a huge crossover market for Yamaha’s street-ready version of the Ag 125 — the YTZ125. Really, it’s just common sense. Adding the necessary bits and pieces to allow a number plate and road legal status was a snap for Yamaha, who after all have a stable of road bikes ranging from the commuter practical to the blisteringly fast. And there are numerous times when zipping down from the homestead to the local shops, around to the neighbours, or indeed down the highway to another block of grazing land is on the cards. The YTZ125 allows, if nothing else, the ability to do this without changing vehicles. But there’s more to this machine than just convenience. With the same

125cc of power from an air cooled four stroke single cylinder motor, the same terrain-busting ride height and suspension, and a similar feel to the AG 125, the YTZ125 inspires on road confidence and still allows dirt-trail and paddock work. Perhaps like nothing else, this machine bridges the gap between two worlds of motorcycling — that of the serious workhorse and that of riding for the sheer pleasure of it. Coming out of a heritage of real farm endurance — the YTZ has been extensively put through its paces in the South Island back blocks — there’s nimble balance and lightweight handling here which fosters confidence. Those who have experienced the open road as well as the trail may very well be tempted to look at Yamaha’s other offerings — a selection which will have true petrol heads salivating. In the meantime, the learner approved, farm tested YTZ125 offers practicality as well as a taste of the ‘other side’ of motorcycling — and all for a very neat price.

Cross purposes — the Yamaha YTZ125 can handle the farm, the highway or the trail with equal ease
