Current champion Athol New will take on Australian winner Marty McConnon in what is promising to be the most anticipated agricultural event of the year at the Grand Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year on July 7 at Feilding. The fierce rivalry of both nations will see Athol and Marty stretched to the limits of endurance as they race off beside each other in a number of physical challenges. Fresh off winning the 2016 FMG Young Farmer of the Year, Athol is an emerging talented leader in the food sector and has recently been sharing his journey from small town Northland to a manager of five dairy farms. He will go into the Trans-Tasman battle as the hot favourite after his outstanding performance in all areas of last year’s contest where he finished high up the ladders in all aspects of the contest including the Agri-sports. His cool head under a pressure cooker situation will mean Marty will have a difficult time on his hands when he attempts to take the Trans-Tasman Ag Olympic trophy back over the ditch. The 27 year old has a wide variety of skills and currently works for leading Tasmanian harvest contractor C and J Spencer Agriculture in combine operations. His role in the company

managing day-to-day running of combine operations sees him managing staff, maintaining machinery, and handling field and workshop maintenance. Like many Grand Final winners, Marty took the Tasmanian Rural Youth title home last year after many years of dedication and perseverance and is looking forward to utilising his experience in New Zealand to learn from NZ Young Farmers. FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest chairperson Dean Rabbidge said the shared history between the two nations means the Trans-Tasman Olympic Ag Battle will be fiercely fought over. “It’s the pride of New Zealand and Australia at stake and just like with any sporting rivalry between both nations, both will be desperate to take the inaugural trophy home. This will be a must-see event and we are expecting large crowds to view the battle.” NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland welcomed the new event and said it would further celebrate excellence in agriculture. “We are delighted to be able to showcase the skills of our Young Farmers in such a way and look forward to seeing the pair battle it out for the pride of their country.”

Dairy action for change

3

DairyNZ represents all dairy farmers in New Zealand, and is in partnership with Fonterra, and the plan has the support of the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry for Primary Industries. “Modern, science-based farming is the way to achieve a future for New Zealand where dairy farming has a lower environmental footprint,” says DairyNZ’s chief executive, Dr Tim Mackle. Dr Mackle says dairy farmers, and the scientists working alongside them are serious about improving the environment. “This plan lays down the foundation for dairy’s sustained, strategic approach to a lower carbon future. We’re taking the first steps in understanding what dairy can do — in conjunction with the wider agricultural sector, plus industry and urban communities — to help meet New Zealand’s Paris Agreement emissions reduction target. “Our farmers are ready to work on lowering emissions — they are used to rising to the challenge, and they are dedicated stewards of their land who want to do the right thing by the environment.” He says addressing on-farm emissions — methane, which is formed when ruminant animals burp, and nitrous oxide, formed when nitrogen escapes into the atmosphere — is one of the most challenging issues facing the dairy and food producing sectors, globally and in New Zealand. “Tackling the reduction of on-farm emissions is not going to be easy.

It requires our government and the agricultural sector to work together, and as such, the plan is an important part of a broader work programme underway.” Fonterra’s chief operating officer, farm source, Miles Hurrell, says it is crucial to take an integrated approach to all the challenges facing dairy — from climate change and animal welfare, to the protection of waterways — and all the while maintain productivity and the profitability of dairy. “The plan complements the environmental commitment dairy farmers have voluntarily undertaken through their work under the Sustainable

Dairying: Water Accord. “Some of their work — such as tree planting, better soil management and reducing nitrogen leaching therefore reducing the release of nitrous oxide — is already helping to address emissions. Then there are the other science-based endeavours that are well underway, like the research to breed cows that produce fewer methane emissions, and a methane inhibiting vaccine.”

endy has been a member of Rural Women New Zealand since 1975 and says RWNZ was instrumental in the continuation of her education. “I strive for knowledge and RWNZ kept my mind going. As a child I always joined things and kept busy. I was a St John ambulance cadet, a girl guide, I played tennis and belonged to the swimming club. Perhaps it is something in me — I was always busy,” says Wendy. “I came from a small rural community in Fairlie, South Canterbury. My father was in the service industry and would take us children to open the gates for

him to the farms. I never thought I would end up farming myself.” Wendy is a twin, and one of eight siblings who all helped their father on his runs. “From there I applied to do my nursing in Timaru hospital and was accepted. Then my boyfriend at the time was moving home to his parents’ farm at Kaharoa, so I transferred to Queen Elizabeth hospital in Rotorua and did my enrolled nursing and here Rusty and I are, 45 years later, on the home farm. “When I was younger I didn’t aspire to be a farmer. I was encouraged to do a lot of the dirty jobs such as lifting the

I was taught to put a post in so I knew how to do it, with our three little girls trailing behind and then a son — it was a neat lifestyle.

“I joined RWNZ along with a group of younger women in the district — they were all incredible. As a national organisation they were looking after our health and education, getting school buses for the areas, and keeping schools open and organising things like getting breast screening done.

“It was amazing to be with the older generation. Last year, RWNZ turned 96 years old and I was reading back on the history. In one year they had 139 submissions presented to government. They were all things I take for granted today. “When you look back you realise how wonderful they were, why did they hide it, why didn’t they celebrate everything they did? “I encourage other wives to join an organisation and get together. There are times in your life where you need to be together. In our case, in one year our income dropped down to a quarter. Things happen and if you are on your own, it is insurmountable — all you can see is how high up others are, but if you meet up with others, you eat cake, have a cup of tea, bitch about how bad life is, but you go home feeling better — that’s women — we need that. “RWNZ put on a day for the ladies affected by PSA in kiwifruit and 180 women turned up. One day they had an income, the next day they didn’t — in times like that, is where RWNZ steps up. “We get ladies together and then we step away and let them get on with their lives. When an adverse event or disease happens, you need to be mindful that people need each other. “RWNZ isn’t joining an old girls club that are in their 60s like me, it is about helping get people started and us being mentors and encouraging others. “I have nine grandchildren and during my time with Federated Farmers, I was flying backwards and forwards to Wellington for 18 years. The eldest is 20 years old and the youngest is seven months. “I am giving myself a little break this year and will finish my projects so they can have them for their children. I am still the treasurer for Region 5, Gisborne to Colville, and trustee for New Zealand Institute of Rural Health. “I would like to thank RWNZ for nominating me for this honour, to the

office staff and the National president Fiona Gower, Margaret Pittaway, Marie Appleton QSM and Sue Vowell, and anyone else involved for the wonderful words they must have put together for me to become an Officer of the Order of Merit. “I could not have achieved this without the love and support of my husband Rusty, and my family. Without their support I would not have been able to do so much.”

WILDLIFE THROUGH THE LENS

BY ANN MORGAN OPENING THE FARM GATE IS A PRIVILEGE MANY DO NOT UNDERSTAND, BUT PHOTOGRAPHER TONY FLUERTY UNDERSTANDS THIS VERY WELL.

“I

am from Upper Hutt and spent much of my early years roaming around the Te Urewera National Park and the Tararua Ranges as a hunter and fur trapper,” says Tony. “I grew up in the 70s and saw lots of things in the bush but never had photos to back up my stories and people wouldn’t believe me. Then I realised it was hard to rely on memories and many of my hunting mates had cameras to record their experiences.

PHOTOS COURTSEY BONEY WHITEFOOT PHOTOGRAPHY

“I have always been fascinated by the beauty of nature and in my late thirties I began photographing what I saw on my hunting trips and it meant I could share what I had experienced. I love the wilderness and coasts, the stunning rata and majestic rimu trees, rugged peaks and playful antics of undisturbed deer to the comical behavior of seals, but the elaborate dances and the incredible colours of birds always hit the right spot for me.”

Years ago Tony had five dogs he trained for field trials and got into duck shooting and upland game became an obsession. He travelled all over the country with his setters and German shorthairs. “I really liked the challenge of training my dogs and shooting birds when they were flying. It takes a lot more skill than with a deer that is standing there unaware of your presence. Then I wondered what it would be like taking photos of birds flying and the passion grew from there.” Tony says it is a lot harder than shooting with a shotgun and there are many components that have to come together to get a decent photo. You have to have light and lots of it and the right technique or you are destined for disappointment. “It is important to get permission to cross someone’s land and it is a privilege to be able to take images of wildlife whilst they are going about their daily life. “We encourage farmers to preserve the wetlands. A good balance of wildlife enriches your life, and children can learn a lot from watching animals and birds interact with each other and survive. “I think one of the most important things for farmers to do is have pest control of rats, cats and stoats. These animals eat the birds and their eggs, especially waterfowl and swamp birds. “Bird varieties in New Zealand are amazing and many farmers don’t realise what they have on their land, like the spotless crake, which is a bird with very similar colours and shape to a pukeko

but grows to the size of a blackbird, and the marsh crake. They are only the size of a sparrow and live in swamps. “They are native and we have found them on nearly every substantial swamp from Wellington to Foxton. Most people have no idea that they even exist let alone on their land.” Tony believes birds need protecting. “Birds help keep waterways open and insect numbers down. If you look around you will see amazing things on your farm. Even pukeko’s help to keep drains open by eating grass around waterways. Bitterns in particular are now almost critical, some get shot during the shooting season, this practice has got to stop — they are struggling as it is without becoming some bored duck shooters’ target practise.” Tony presents his photos of black kites, owls and fairy terns, to name a few, under his business name ‘Boney Whitefoot’. “One day I came out of the bush to my friend Steve and I took my shoe off to check a blister. A lady said ‘what ugly boney white feet’ and that is how the name ‘Boney Whitefoot’ came about.” Tony has photographed the Koekoea (long tailed cuckoo) in the Pureora Forest Park and says these birds migrate each summer to lay eggs in the Whitehead nests, a bird about the size of a sparrow. “Then they and the chicks fly back the Pacific Islands during our winter. The shining cuckoo lay in grey warbler nests, and fly off leaving the grey warbler to babysit. They roam around the countryside, never settling in one spot. Cuckoo’s are

Primary exports are booming Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said the primary sector is forecast for a bumper year ahead after some challenging past seasons of wet conditions, earthquakes, cyclones, and volatile global commodity prices. The Ministry for Primary Industries released the latest Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries at the National Fieldays. “MPI are forecasting that primary sector exports will grow to $41.6 billion in the year to June 2018 — this is an increase of 9.1 percent and would be the highest level ever,” said Mr Guy. “Strong forestry and dairy prices, combined with increasing production of apples, wine, and kiwifruit have underpinned growth for the year ending June 2017. “Dairy prices for most products are forecast to remain at or near current levels as global demand and supply rebalance, while high forestry prices will continue to encourage record harvest levels. “Horticulture exports are also forecast to continue their strong growth across a range of wine, fruit, and vegetable products. Meat and wool exports are forecast to recover to $8.5 billion following an almost 10 percent fall in export values for the year ending June 2017.” New market opportunities and diversification into higher value products such as chilled meat, retail ready products, and nutraceuticals would help to further increase the value of the primary sector exports. “This week’s National Fieldays is a great showcase

Primary Industries Minister, Nathan Guy

of the range of innovative and worldleading Kiwi food producers who are really helping underpin the performance of our economy.” “The government will continue to back the sector and support our exporters on-farm, such as through the Primary Growth Partnership and the Sustainable Farming Fund. “The government is also supporting our exporters in-market by investing $134 million over the next four years to achieve the objectives in Trade Agenda 2030. “This strategy provides more support to primary sector exporters to diversify, greater resource to government to tackling non-tariff barriers and aims to have 90 percent of our goods exports covered by free trade agreements by 2030.”

ADVERTORIAL

Therapy for osteoarthritis Part 1 Everyone is different and this is certainly true when using nutritional therapy for osteoarthritis. Sometimes these differences are obvious — helping someone in their 80s with advanced arthritis is different from someone in their 40s who have had their first joint niggles. Other differences though are not so obvious. In some people joint pain is more from inflammation while in others more from the actual joint deterioration. This series of columns looks at some personal stories and the methods we used to bring improvements. I have just spoken with someone with significant osteoarthritis. He is in his 80s and has long term osteoarthritis in his ankles, knees and hips which caused significant pain with restricted mobility. He rated his discomfort at 7/10 and was faced with further steady deterioration. He was already doing some positive things through supplements with a good Omega 3 and a joint supplement. What we did was to fine tune his programme and introduce an antiinflammatory nutrition programme.

The main supplement component was to lift chondroitin sulphate to over 1000mg daily combined with curcumin and glucosamine. This is much higher than in many joint products. After only 2 months he now rates his pain at 2/10 down from 7/10. He is both surprised and delighted having lived with this for a long time. Our body, including our joints, is equipped with powerful healing processes which can be overwhelmed when fighting a disease processes. The first goal of nutritional medicine is to get these working again. Once these are activated the body can then set to work trying to heal the problem. In the case of my client the supplements played a huge role in stimulating this often latent healing force. For more information give me a call or email john@abundant.co.nz. WARM UP FOR WINTER Cutting costs for cosy homes The days of generous government subsidies for home insulation are now behind us, with a new criteria operating that means government grants for insulation only apply to rental properties with tenants on a low income. Nowadays if you’re a homeowner, you might get help from your local council or bank, and some suppliers do give a reasonable discount so it pays to shop around. While winter means colder temperatures and higher heating costs there are simple steps towards more comfortable living as the weather turns chilly. The best time to cope with colder temperatures is when building or renovating. Keep the winter temperatures in mind and apart from obvious insulation properties, there are advantages in planning ahead, where furnishing can play a part. Walls are better insulators than glass, but they still get cold and let out lots of heat. And believe it or not, you can reduce energy loss by covering them with picture or mirrors. Even a simple poster adds an extra layer of insulating air, raising internal surface temperatures by around 1°C and cutting lost energy by a quarter. Thus it is evident that good quality

The same applies to windows, and the extra expense of double glazing could well save you money in the long run as heating costs will be that much lighter when the utility bill arrives.

LIVESTOCK

Wool Perspective

13

From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Crossbred prices remain sluggish Market conditions for crossbred wools have continued to be extremely tough with returns delivering less than cost of production in many cases. On the flip-side, fine wool prices have remained buoyant as demand appears to be outstripping supply big-time. For many mid micron types, market interest has also remained positive, particularly with the small volumes of these types offered for sale during the past few weeks. As new season’s pre-lamb shorn wools begin to filter onto the market, many producers of strong wool who may not have been exposed to the market place for almost twelve months, could struggle to come to terms with the low pricing structure which has evolved during that time period. At recent wool auctions crossbred prices have remained sluggish and, in particular, an obvious lack of interest for poor scouring colour and/or very short second shear and/or medium-to-high levels of vegetable fault has become apparent as buyers are more selective with their purchases, a probable reflection of a distinct slim order book particularly from Chinese mills. The majority of buyers have shown most interest in well prepared, good colour, sound tensile strength wools with a minimum staple length of approximately seventy-five millimetres. Halfbred and finer Corriedale types have received good support from the

trade recently, buoyed by the very solid global fine wool market. Well prepared halfbred types drew widespread interest from buyers at all Christchurch wool auctions during May with most micron categories improving slightly in value at each offering perhaps a reflection of the limited supply available at this time of year, and with so many clips in recent years having either succumbed to crossbred sheep or a complete change in land use, such as dairy or viticulture. The very small quantity of merino wool types available to the exporting trade in New Zealand during the past few weeks have drawn fantastic interest, with the also small number of vendors mostly ecstatic about the returns for their, mainly, short and or oddment types. Australian wool brokers and exporters have also reported a continued improvement for their wools, with only a couple of sales during the past month or so experiencing a slight easing in price before regaining the lost ground. At the time of writing there had been some publicity condemning pollution via plastic micro-fibres ejected into the seas around our planet, generally as a bye-product of clothes washing. At a time when natural products appear to be enjoying support around the world,

often driven by younger folk who insist on sustainable consumer products, wool surely has a great opportunity to win ground as a fibre of choice both for apparel but also interior furnishings. Wool, being flame retardant, biodegradable, and a naturally renewable resource, in my opinion, ticks plenty of boxes for everyone. The Campaign for Wool has focussed on all of those properties and is doing

a great job of promoting wool across these sectors. At this time of year we could all do much better promoting woolen garments to our families to be worn simply for warmth. The term ‘fleece’ is used often for garments made from entirely man-made fibres, but with an obvious connotation of natural warmth. Does that annoy you? It sure annoys me. That’s my view.

SLURRY BUGS: the biological answer to complete effluent management by Forward Farming Consultancy

1.5M please

Three hundred years ago, a statement like that wouldn’t have raised a single eyebrow. Back then, belief in a flat earth was so entrenched, it was preposterous to think otherwise, and if you did, you were labelled a mad man. That’s how widely-held convictions work. The sheer number of ’believers’ creates a pressure that makes it easy to conform and very difficult to entertain another idea. Back in 2002, some farmers regarded me as a ‘round earther’ because I began to seriously look at running my farm on biological principles. It doesn’t work, they told me. It’s airy-fairy, they laughed. That’s not how we do it, they said. Until 2002, when I decided to put some other ideas to the test. I challenged the belief that good production was determined by a high usage of nitrogen. I discovered that it’s not, and took the farm from growing 14 tonne dm/ha/yr using 150 units of nitrogen/ha/yr to 19 tonne dm/ha/ yr by only using 30 units of nitrogen. Here’s some other ‘round earth’ things

Modern farming in NZ demands the highest level of cleanliness of milking machinery and equipment. CLARK PRODUCTS LTD have developed a range of MPI approved cleaning chemicals incorporating the latest “triple action” surfactant technology specially for internal cleaning around the dairy shed. WHAT THE PROFESSIONALS SAY “I would recommend these products to any dairy farmer that has different staff cleaning their plant, likes to have a clean plant and not need to scrub it once a week or month” Tony Baker, Puketiro Farms “CLARKS are on to a winner with this range!” Trevor Gulliver, Consultant, Advanced Dairy Solutions ALKALIS

I discovered: Farming practices that work with the soil’s biology grows significantly longer root systems. The roots on my farm measured 800mm. That in itself mitigated leaching and grew better grass. Biologically correct soil nutrition grows nutrient-dense feed that has far more palatability. This type of grass can be allowed to grow longer and can be grazed clean by cows at 3,300kg/ ha. With a longer grazing period more grass is grown, meaning less dependance on bought-in feed. When all 16 soil nutrients are in their right percentages, the biological activity in the soil increases significantly. This increase in good organisms produces more enzymes which digest the feed in the cow’s gut. This results in better conversion of feed to milk. You do not see weeping walls or effluent management machinery on biologically efficient farms. That’s

because the better digestion rates significantly reduce the solid matter in the effluent. Also, the transfer of good biological activity from the soil-grass-gut-effluent means that the pond contains a higher ratio of fibre-eating bacteria. These microbes liquefy the pond. The higher ratio of good soil organisms suppresses the activity of soil pathogens. This causes a drop in animal sickness — mastitis, facial eczema, foot rot, and the need for remedial measures. Higher biological activity creates better soil physiology. This increases drainage, which reduces pugging. It also raises the soil temperature, which shrinks your winter season length and reduces dry periods because of the extended root systems. That’s what I discovered from 10 years of biological farming. Our focus now is to teach other farmers how to move forward.

Calf Rearing be a specialist Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

Combining science, culture and innovation Well-known hill country station, Tautane, is part of a joint research initiative to help increase production in the primary sector in New Zealand. The Ravensdown Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) Pioneering to Precision programme is developing aerial soil testing technology and increasing aerial spreading precision with GPS-driven automated variable rate spreading. A map is sent wirelessly to the plane, specifying areas and blocks where no fertiliser should be applied. The computer-controlled hopper doors automatically cut the fertiliser flow when over those areas and the map produced verifies where the fertiliser has been released and, crucially, where it has not. A recent field trial of the PGP programme at Tautane produced a very promising variable-rate proof of placement map and has all those involved excited about the possibilities. Tautane is an iconic 3374-hectare hill country station, owned by Ngati Kahungunu. The iwi, in partnership with New Zealand’s largest agricultural training centre, Taratahi, signed on to the cooperative’s research farm network in 2014. Ngati Kahungunu leader, Ngahiwi Toamona, says there are some important cultural values that align with Ravensdown’s PGP technology.

“Our ancestor, Kahungunu, was an innovator and forward thinker and so that’s where we want to be. We want to be sustainable and trade in the new world with sustainable practices. We’re for progress and Ravensdown’s PGP programme is putting Maori back into the forefront of farming and innovation.” Taratahi farm manager Matt Smith says Ravensdown’s PGP programme is going to have huge benefits for hill country farming. “Our first application using the technology allowed us to take out about 347 hectares of sensitive areas and waterways and reallocate that fertiliser to other parts of the farm. It was a super nitrogen mix, and you could see it definitely was going where it was supposed to go, which is going to have a huge beneficial impact on environmental sustainability.” Hayden Hape, iwi liaison, works with Matt and his wife Claire and says it’s about combining western science with the iwi’s values. “We say a good environment is good business. The sensor’s ability to aerial soil test down to the square metre and variable rate spread to 40 square metres with proof of placement will transform hill country farming.”

Trusted brands contribute to success

Behind every great vehicle sales business is a great brand — two in the case of Southey’s Auto World — Honda and Nissan.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Heavy Vehicle Service and Repair

The Dixon Street car dealers obtained the Wairarapa new car dealership for Honda in 1986 and later added Nissan in 1993. The success of Honda and Nissan “comes down to the fact that they are two very trusted brands,” says Dealer Principal Roger Southey. “People who buy Honda and Nissan are very loyal as they trust the quality of their product and know they are reliable. There are no disappointments, they offer

very good warranties, and have a good resale value.” Both Honda and Nissan have launched new models of two old favourites in recent months. Nissan has overhauled its classic Navara, introducing the completely new NP300, available in 2WD and 4WD, single or twin turbo, narrow or wide body options. Roger describes it as “the magnificent Navara” — “it’s all new modern technology, economical, has a three-and-

a-half tonner tow and is very reliable.” A few months ago Southey’s Auto World launched the latest version of the Honda Civic sedan to Wairarapa and last week added the hatchback model to its stable. The Honda Civic has been the global standard for the compact car since 1972. This new Civic is the sportiest ever and has set new benchmarks for a compact in terms of space, fuel efficiency, safety, interior quality, and dynamic driving performance.

calves continuously since 1938, covering north and south Wairarapa and southern Hawkes Bay. We have seen a lot of changes in that time, from the meat companies procuring the bobby calves to being controlled by farmerowned co-operatives and then back to the meat companies. Calves were originally picked up and weighed at the farmer’s gate. This year, with the new MPI changes, the calves will be picked up from loading platforms. Our drivers take great care with each animal, and are trained and knowledgeable about the animal welfare act and everything else that goes with it. We have installed rubber mats in the back door of our crates and we ensure the animals are looked after properly from pickup to delivery. Here at Garrity Bros Ltd, the cartage business has been our way of life for many generations — we are proud of providing a good service to our valued customers, and we look forward to continuing to provide our farming clients with a reliable service into the future.
