“Strong prices and recent trade gains such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership will undoubtedly help lift the profitability of sheep and beef farming,” says outgoing B+LNZ chair, James Parsons. “Despite the progress and achievements, the sheep and beef sector could not afford to be complacent. That’s why we are committed to a number of important initiatives such as the Red Meat Story and the New Zealand Farm Assurance Programme, so the sector can capture more value from key markets. “We are also continuing to invest in supporting farming excellence with our research and development and extension programmes to boost productivity and reduce costs.” The Government has been constructive in its discussions with the sheep and beef sector since the General Election last year, and Mr Parsons encouraged the sector to work closely with them. “We all agree with the goal of improving water quality, having a lighter environmental footprint and moving further up the value curve. We accept sheep and beef farming has an environmental impact, yet despite this, our sheep and beef farmers are world leaders. “The Government has set an ambitious target of being carbon neutral by 2050 and the sheep and beef sector has reduced its carbon emissions by 19 per cent since 1990, whilst maintaining production. The opportunity is to continually improve and share the innovations we develop in tackling these challenges with other countries, so we make the world a better place. “With 2.7million hectares, almost a quarter of New Zealand’s indigenous bush, located on sheep and beef farms, coupled with riparian plantings and exotic woodlots, we are in a strong position.” B+LNZ’s mission was to ensure future policies do not have unintended

consequences for the sheep and beef sector, he said. “For instance, planting one billion trees should not be at the expense of productive sheep and beef farms and thriving rural communities. There is, however, the opportunity to integrate woodlots into sheep and beef farms using a land use capability approach.” Sam McIvor, chief executive of B+LNZ, said the organisation’s strategy puts more emphasis on enhancing farmers’ environmental position, unlocking market potential and greater government and public engagement, while still supporting farming excellence. “Our draft environment strategy is the first step in our quest to return the hero status back to farmers, so they are valued by the wider community. It is focussed on four key areas: improving water quality, advancing towards carbon neutral, enhancing our biodiversity and ensuring healthy productive soils. “The aim is to give farmers the tools and information, so they have confidence to make decisions that will have the greatest environmental impact for a profitable future.”

Federated Farmers would like to remind deer hunters to take extra care as the roar season approaches. The upcoming Easter holiday opens one of the busiest periods of the year, with many hunters heading into the hills to look for a stag, raising the potential for accidents. “Over half of all big game hunting accidents occur in the months of March and April. So it’s important that hunters, experienced or not, consider terrain, weather and what is best practice safety,” says Federated Farmers National president, Katie Milne. “Hunters must correctly identify their target every single time. If there is any doubt, do not pull the trigger. “This time of the year is eagerly anticipated by hunters and we want everyone to have a great time, and come back safe to their families and communities. “Always plan your trip, tell someone your plans, and take the right equipment, including a personal locator beacon.” Hunters must have permission to hunt, regardless of who owns the land - no permission, no access. For those hunting on private land, it is important to remember that it is a privilege, and to always consider the wishes of the landowner. “It’s all about thinking what constitutes safe practice and how your actions can impact on others. Remember to follow the practicable steps for using firearms

It is one of the oldest Romney studs in the country and we have a five star luxury lodge for guests,” says farm manager, Bradley Riggs. With more than 1,000 hectares of which 530 is effective, the estate is also home to a herd of Angus beef cattle. The owner is American, Bill Foley, and

the farm is connected to Foley Family Wines. “Many years ago, before the big earthquake, the shepherds drove sheep around the coast from Wellington; but then rocks came down right to the sea and they had to carry sheep one by one so Wairarapa farming was born. “We are the first farm on the Wairarapa from Wellington and used to be a Romney stud back then. holds the oars in place on a boat). They used to row the wool bales out to a ship bound for England and the locals worked out that adding rocks in the bales gave extra weight, so the English made a register to track each bale. “We didn’t know and the worker had to make a brand for the shipment to be accepted so he grabbed a rowlock, and painted the bales with it and then raced to Wellington to register us. I have worked the station for seven years and

originally had Speckle Park beef and Texel sheep too, but the Angus and Romney are much more suited to our environment. I have topped the sales five years in a row for Angus, as they do exceptionally well here. “The Texels were inferior and terrible mothers with foot problems, and low fertility so I removed them and focussed on the Romney, which have been in New Zealand for more than 150 years and the imperfections have been eliminated.

We have gone from scanning 135 per cent to mid-170s and have mostly live births.” Bradley grew up in Wellington and decided to attend the four day Taratahi farm course and enjoyed it, so enrolled in the 12 month course and has never looked back. “Our stock are grass fed with a small amount of supplements — they winter on the coastal block to keep them from messing the flat land for the sheep. “We sell lambs through Coastal Spring Lamb and get a premium rate. I do an old school intensive lambing beat on my quad bike. During bad weather I check twice daily and at night with a spotlight. “I bring any ewes that have lost lambs home to stay under cover for mothering orphan lambs — it is really rewarding. “I do demonstrations about shearing and working dogs for the lodge guests. They may come from New York and have

out to dinner — get off the farm and refresh. I rave about our shelterbelts as they are really important in lambing for survival; as they tuck up behind them for protection and it also shelters from the sun. They planted a lot of Leyland cypress, and made a native corridor including flax, pohutukawa, and cabbage trees — we have no electric fences, everything is conventional fenced. “For me and my partner, Amelie Aegerter, it’s a lifestyle. Amelie’s from Germany and is a beauty therapist at the Lodge and is very hands on at the farm. “I am a keen hunter and enjoy the recreational lifestyle. “For me it is not about the money — it is about catching a pig and shooting a deer, and going fishing and getting gurnard for dinner — it is an amazing job.”

never been on a farm or seen a sheep in the flesh. “I get paid to show off my job and I really enjoy sharing my knowledge.” The farm is split — the main section is 80 per cent flat and the second block is steep coastal hill country with no fences. “It goes straight into DOC land and we have a grazing concession,” says Bradley. “With farming, the hardest thing is to keep your chin up and try to anticipate as much as possible. You can’t be responsible for the weather or mother nature. We bear the brunt of a lot of bad weather here and it can be challenging at times, but we try to keep a positive attitude. “There is nothing between us and Antarctica, and we can have some pretty major deaths at times and we just fight through. ENABLING HEALTHY SHEARING SHEDS BY ANN MORGAN Mark and Megan Turton decided there has to be a better way to clean the effluent buildup from under woolsheds to help farmers have a healthier environment, so the couple set about inventing a solution.

B

ased in Dannevirke, Megan was a teacher aide at a local primary school and Mark is a fencing contractor and the ‘cleansweep’ now keeps the couple busy travelling to various destinations with their ‘cleansweep’ machine making woolsheds an environmentally friendlier place to work. “I spent time as a dairy farmer and then got into fencing some 30 years ago,” says Mark. “We have six guys employed at Turton Fencing Ltd creating all types of fences, but mostly farm and security, as well as pole sheds. We are always looking for an opportunity to excel ourselves and that

is how we came up with the shearing shed clearing machine. “I gave a guy a hand one day to clean the manure out from under his woolshed and he had a big vacuum cleaner. The day was terrible and wet, and the machine didn’t work well at all — we spent all our time unblocking it as it kept clogging.“ Mark thought there must be something easier to use for the job, but there wasn’t. “I asked myself a few questions and came up with a sideways bulldozer system with a hydraulic motor. Every time we trialled it, we saw ten things wrong but one thing that worked, so we

kept pushing ahead. It has taken a lot of time and investment to get to where we are today, but it is definitely worth the effort.” Mark says the machine is versatile and can work on wet ground; whereas a sucking machine gets blocked. “Underneath the shed is a horrible place to be for obvious reasons — all the manure is there, and using the ‘cleansweep’ you don’t have to be amongst it. The machine self-steers and operating from the outside can reach to 20-30 metres. We assess every job prior for quoting and our service is a fast and cost-effective way of getting your shed cleaned. “Farmers get the sheep in overnight so they aren’t wet for the shearer, who wants to rock up and get the job done — no shearer wants to shear wet animals. The sheep also sweat whilst in the shed, so keeping the base clean keeps air circulating through the building. “Overnight the animals empty out and the waste drops through the grating and underneath the building gets built-up. Before long years have passed and then it is too much of an issue for the farmer and it gets put in the ‘too hard’ basket — suddenly manure is coming up through the grating and creates issues such as the ammonia smell, lack of air circulation and the wool gets stains. “We are making the job simple for farmers and they don’t have to handle it themselves, and the end product is great fertiliser that the client keeps. Some people give it to the local school or clubs to sell, or it is spread on

March 2018

7

The product removed from under the shed is often used as fertiliser on paddocks or donated to schools and clubs for fundraisers paddocks.” Mark says it is important having a clean shed, as this creates a healthy space on many levels. “Besides the sheep having good airflow, the piles and rafters aren’t designed to have manure around them, so for all the right reasons it needs to be clean under the shed. Having us do it removes a lot more stress than people realise, the end result is no ammonia smell, no wool staining and we can do a maintenance plan for future years. “We also clean the count out pens —

when the sheep is shorn it goes down a chute to the pens. They generally take a bit of wool with them each time — this sits at the bottom and packs together like concrete. The machine digs into that and grinds it off as well. “It is good to get rid of that buildup, because before you know it is 3-4 foot thick and the animals have trouble getting out. We are now looking at

building a second machine and going to the Gisborne area, as we are sure they could use our services. We believe clean sheds means less stress and happy shearers and animals, clean wool, and of course, happy farmers.”

East Coast’s Young Farmer of the Year

Sheep and beef farmer, Patrick Crawshaw, won the East Coast Regional Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year. It was the 24-year-old Foley Farming Enterprises staff member’s second regional final and he said he was humbled by the win, especially knowing the calibre of competitors in the field, but all the hard work had definitely paid off. “It’s still sinking in. I really can’t believe it!” Patrick used the experience of previous competitions to his advantage, playing to his strengths and taking

home all technical challenges including the AGMARDT agribusiness exam, the Massey University agri-growth interview and the Meridian Energy agriknowledge quiz. The Dannevirke farmer, also performed well in the practical component of the final and will now go on to represent the east coast at the 50th Anniversary FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in July. With his wedding in January, Patrick had recently returned from his

honeymoon, with wife, Isabelle, joking ‘it was all study’ ‘but now it was totally worth it!’. For winning the final Patrick took home $12,500 in prizes, including a Honda XR150 motorbike. Second place went to 25-year-old Hugh Abbiss, also of Foley Farming Enterprises. The sheep and beef farmer in this, his second regional final, taking home the coveted

Ravensdown agri-skills challenge. Having both returned home to the east coast from the Aorangi region, Robbie Hill took home third place and Richard Falloon won the highly contested Agrisports Challenge to round out a success event in Masterton. The 50th Grand Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year will take place on July 5 with seven grand finalists from around New Zealand.

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Start with a solid foundation Building is essentially a task that begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home are vital. But foundations also need to be revisited, as in the case of some rural buildings that may have started life in pioneer days. Over time piles can rot away, causing them to fail. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised H5 pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often, different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving, or may be continuing to move — this all depends on the cause.

If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result. This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign

the house on this new foundation. To establish if there’s a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job and different repilers use different methods — some cut holes in the floor for access under

the house and some lift the entire house on jacks to make room to work. Repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit, so it pays to make plans in advance.

Don’t build a house, build a Landmark New Zealand has one of the most enviable lifestyles in the world. Landmark Homes build homes that make the best use of light, space and aspect, while giving you the opportunity to incorporate your ideas and dreams.

Design for the colder times Autumn is unfolding, soon to give way to winter and a reminder that a warm, energy efficient home gets plenty of sun and is sheltered from prevailing winds — so the choice of site is a key decision. Find out how much sun a site gets at different times of the year, by using an app like Sun Seeker on your smartphone or tablet — good advice from EnergywiseNZ. On clear winter days, the sun sends around 500 watts of heat through each square metre of unshaded northfacing window. A home designed to harness the sun’s free warmth is placed on the sunniest part of the section to access the most sun into the main living areas, with service areas on the south side. Trap in the free heat from the sun using thermal mass like a concrete floor, exposed to the sun, so it soaks up heat during the day and releases it when temperatures drop at night. Select appropriately sized and positioned windows: moderately large on the north-facing side of the house, smaller on the east and west sides, and smallest on the south side. Think about how much space you need on a day-to-day basis. Smaller houses are cheaper to build, easier to heat and use a lot less energy. The more complex a home’s shape is, the more floor, wall and ceiling area it has to lose heat through. Simple house designs — for example, compact rectangular shapes and multilevel homes — have less external

surface area, so are easier and cheaper to keep warm. Good design, materials and construction will enable your home to retain heat for your comfort and lower heating bills. The important factors

are: high levels of insulation in ceiling, walls and underfloor, well in excess of minimum building code requirements. Good design will cut your home’s heating needs, but it still pays to make the heating system is as energy

Council approval a vital component You have the plans, you have the section, and the money is coming from the bank, but does your work have the all important sign-off from the local authority? Before the first timber is sawn, the first yard of concrete laid, there is the matter of a building consent. The first stop is your local council to obtain the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority (BCA) that certain works meet the requirements of the Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code. Consent is required for most work including of course, new buildings, but also covers a wider range of construction including: • swimming pools, spa pools and fencing,·retaining walls over 1.5 metres (no surcharge) • retaining walls any height incurring a surcharge • decks over 1.5 metres high • pergolas attached to buildings • free-standing non-habitable buildings larger than 10 square metres

• • • •

plumbing and drainage work demolition relocation of buildings additions, alterations to existing buildings There is actually an extensive list and best to check thoroughly before starting on a project. Consents can be organised online from council websites, or from offices and these are valid for 12 months from the date of issue; with all building work to be completed within two years from the date consent was granted. Applications can be complex and councils usually recommend that you engage a professional person to help with design work and drawings. Fixed fees are available for some types of applications. If your project does not meet the fixed fee criteria, the cost will depend on things like the type of application,

cost of work involved and the level of detail provided. Councils’ charges are listed on their websites and are based on the length of time it takes to process an application.

SIMPLICITY

The success of the award winning Clean Green Effluent System has been its simplicity. We start by filtering out the solids through a patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash. This fresh green water is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total fresh water consumption to

about 20lt/cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/day. As we are now only using 20lt/ cow we only have to deal with 20lt/cow per day for storage and distribution to land. The Clean Green Effluent System has a unique distribution system that was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25 mm or ¼mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems. The super low application depth allows for

application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity. As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round, the storage requirement is minimal. The Clean Green Effluent System utilises 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage to exceed the requirement of the Massey University Pond Calculator. Comprehensive research over the past ten years is looking positive for the Clean Green Effluent Company System. Testing has indicated that the super low application system will cause no environmental ill

effects even in the winter. The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall liquid farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year. This liquid has to be dealt with via your distribution system. Rainwater contribution in open ponds can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairyshed. The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem free effluent system.

Benefits of the system • Small foot print • No storage ponds • Fully automated • 0.25mm application/24hrs • Low man hours to maintain • Low running costs • 60% fresh water savings • Fully patented system • Environmentally friendly

FORESTRY

Forestry amendments proposed

Investments in sensitive land involving forestry rights will be brought into the scope of the Overseas Investment Act. The changes have been proposed by Associate Finance Minister, David Parker, and would introduce a lighthanded ‘checklist’ screening regime, which will make it easier for overseas investors to gain approval to buy forestry rights than if they were subject to the current screening regime. Overseas buyers of existing freehold and leasehold forestry land, who already face screening, would also be able to use the light-handed checklist. “The changes need to be made before the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership comes into force, or we will lose the chance to screen such sales forever,” Mr Parker says. “It will then be possible for future governments to tighten or further loosen the criteria applied to forestry investment, if required. Any forest can in effect be purchased as a forestry registration right. “This means that a screening regime that covers only freehold and leasehold is ineffective. Forestry rights can grant a high degree of control

over large parcels of land for multiple rotations over long periods of time, so it is important they are included in the regime. There is no evidence that the change will have a substantial effect on commercial values.” The forestry sector is reliant on overseas investment with 70 per cent of plantation trees in overseas ownership. Under the proposed changes, investors buying up to 1,000 hectares of forestry rights each year will not need consent, but purchases above that level

would be screened. This would apply to all forestry rights, including bare land planting. Investors would likely pass a new screening test for freehold and leasehold bare land, given they can demonstrate benefit to New Zealand from converting land into forestry, providing jobs and advancing the Government’s ‘one billion trees’ policy. The amendments have been submitted to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee and the Government will also be consulting further with Maori.

Dairy cows are responsible for about a quarter of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the cost of supplying the world with dairy products. But it doesn’t have to be. Planting forests is an easy way to offset greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. An average dairy farmer could plant nearly two hectares a year in radiata pine to totally offset the gases their cows make. It wouldn’t even have to be on their own land. The farmers profit from the trees at harvest – and then replant. There’s a lot of win in this package.

progress in the TBfree programme. From March 1, reductions to DCAs affect 317,000 hectares and 1,029 herds, resulting in more than 31,000 fewer TB tests for cattle and deer herds. The changes are relatively small after the large reductions in 2017, when 2.3 million hectares and 7,400 herds were affected. Visit ospri.co.nz/dcamap to check local disease control area status.

18MAS002

The TBfree programme manages cattle and deer TB testing through Disease Control Areas (DCAs) throughout New Zealand that focus on areas of varying risk of livestock TB infection from the main wildlife vector of disease, possums. Michelle Edge, chief executive of OSPRI, which manages the TBfree programme, says that as TB management in each area proves successful, disease control areas are reviewed based on detailed scientific analysis and data modelling. “Accordingly, where TB eradication targets have been met, testing requirements are reduced. The progress of the TBfree programme is a credit to farmers, the industry and government organisations that invest in the TBfree programme and in the ultimate goal of making New Zealand TB-free.” TBfree’s strategy combines targeted possum control, TB testing and stock movement controls to help control the spread of bovine TB beyond these boundaries. DCA changes show the progress of TB control towards the ultimate eradication of bovine tuberculosis from New Zealand’s cattle and deer herds. So far OSPRI’s TBfree programme has eradicated TB from 1.83 million hectares — with 7.9 million hectares of Vector Risk Area left to be eradicated. Each year, DCA boundaries and the TB testing regime within them, are assessed and adjusted according to

Premium trailers from Pahiatua

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

After a top-quality, properly built trailer? Look no further than Angove Engineering’s Orion Trailers, 100 per cent made in Pahiatua! Angove’s offer their robustly built hotdip galvanised trailers in all the standard sizes, both in single and tandem axle configurations. Single axle trailers are available with an ‘axle tip’ function, while the tandems can be fitted with hydraulic tipping kits, providing that extra level of convenience. All customers have an option to upgrade to 10-inch electric braked hubs, with braking a legal requirement on trailers over 2,000kg up to 3,500kg. The trailers feature a range of matching accessories to meet your needs, be it crates, stock crates, H-Frames or drop-in MX bike channels. Orions use 2mm New Zealand steel, have custom fabricated 2mm wheel guards and are fitted with a high-quality jockey wheel. The trailers are kitted with Hella branded LED lights, TWL or Trailequip running gear (depending on the model), and most importantly, they’re fabricated by engineers right here under the Tararua ranges! GVMs start at 1,380kg and head north to 3,500kg on the larger tandems. Be it a garden trailer for your weekend clean-up or a custom ‘heavy weight’ to transport your digger, there’s one to meet your needs. One of the more recent additions is the 10.5’ x 6’ Single Axle Tipper Trailer, built specifically to transport the ever

March 2018

WRECKING ALL MAKES AND MODELS popular side-by-side vehicles, but also a handy size for many other tasks. The ‘axle tipper’ function on this trailer means that ramps are not required, saving space and making loading the vehicle a cinch. To date, Orion Trailers have been offered on a ‘build to order’ basis. Turnaround times are usually four weeks, including the week the trailer is away being hot-dip galvanised. The more frequently purchased trailer models will be fabricated on an on-going basis to maintain minimum stock levels. “We’re looking to reduce the wait time on our most common models,” explains Paul Angove, owner of Angove Engineering. “Some people have the time to wait for a build, especially if it’s customised, but

many others need a trailer on the spot. Holding stock, or at the least having one in the pipeline, will help us to better serve these customers.” A 1,380kg rated Orion 8’ x 5’ Single Axle Trailer starts at $3,345 incl GST, while the 10.5’ x 6’ Side by Side tipper trailer, as pictured, is available from $4,245 incl GST. You can check out Angove’s Orion Trailers at 17 Mangahao Road, Pahiatua. Call Paul and the team on 06 376 8918 to chat about options, or visit oriontrailers. co.nz to learn more.
