SAFETY

The forest industry has invested millions making our forests safer to work in. Most of our harvesting operators are working inside specialised machines, instead of wielding chainsaws like they all used to. Our serious injury rate in forests has fallen. We put a high priority on learning from our mistakes. No other primary industry makes more of a safety effort than we do.

Harepaora’s iwi affiliation is Ngati Awa and Te Whanau a Apanui and he was a finalist in the 2016 competition and felt that he lost out because of his inexperience. However, he now believes he has the necessary attitude and skills to be a positive role model. The Young Maori Farmer Award was first held in 2012 and is designed to recognise young Maori farmers and encourage young Maori to make farming a career choice and to showcase to prospective employers, the talent pool that exists within iwi. ‘Eradication of M bovis: A big sacrifice’ by Ann van Engelen

The president of Wairarapa Federated Farmers, William Beetham, has called for nation-wide support in the fight against Mycoplasma bovis. “All of the agricultural industry and New Zealand has to band behind the government and industry leaders’ decision to eradicate, and support those farmers making such a big sacrifice to eradicate M bovis,” he says. “Farmers and those that have cattle need to understand and implement best practice for on-farm biosecurity and be compliant with regulations. There is now a need for the industry to work together on providing clear and concise information to farmers on M bovis, the eradication process and how to better manage on-farm biosecurity. Meanwhile, the fight against Mycoplasma bovis is escalating with 50 more staff, a new field HQ and the appointment of a science adviser, says agriculture minister, Damien O’Connor. He says 25 new Incident Control Point managers have begun work after completing training. These case managers are appointed to work oneon-one with affected farmers under movement controls. They support farmers with information and advice on the practical aspects of the controls. “A further 25 will undergo training in coming weeks, greatly boosting capacity to help those farmers affected by the disease. The 50 new Incident Control Point staff are on top of the 250 at the Ministry for Primary Industries already undertaking this work. MPI’s

compensation team was also recently increased from 22 to 30 and is expected to double in size as the response progresses. “MPI has also opened a new field HQ in Cambridge. Newly appointed science adviser, Dr John Roche, has been tasked with researching new tools for the fight against Mycoplasma bovis. “He has a PhD in ruminant nutrition from the National University of Ireland and has most recently worked as a principal scientist at DairyNZ and adjunct professor in animal science at Lincoln University. “He will provide strategic science advice across MPI, and his first task will be to head up a new Mycoplasma bovis Science Strategic Advisory Group. “There has been little international investment in science around this disease so the group will look into testing developments to detect William Beetham, Wairarapa Federated Farmers president Mycoplasma bovis in individual cows, grow understanding of the disease and identify opportunities to support the New Zealand eradication operation. “With his background in Ireland, where Mycoplasma bovis is widespread, Dr Roche will be ideally placed to lead this work,” says Mr O’Connor.

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

SHOWCASING TO

THE WORLD BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

This is part two of Cheryl Eldridge’s story of being passionate about a rare breed of grey sheep and New Zealand wool. With her husband Barry, she has diversified the farming activities on their property Stansborough Station and developed the breed, which is now called ‘Stansborough Grey’.

C

heryl and her two sons personally sort and class every fleece into three shades of grey as the sheep are shorn. This is done twice annually to keep the quality at its best for textile production. Cheryl has a background in the creative arts, along with daughter Kiri, and designs all the fabrics, accessories and finished product range. “The wool comes in dark, mid and silver grey, and within these preselected tones there is a whole spectrum, which

creates the marvelous, almost metallic sheen,” says Cheryl. “I started working alone, in a shed with one loom, and now have six historic looms and a wide blanket loom, and we are training a couple of apprentices to pass on the knowledge we have. “The yarn is better spun as fine worsted, and then it is combed to enhance the lustre. The demand for the fibre is such, that we cannot supply generally because all our yarn is used in-house.”

The fibre can be woven, knitted and felted, and all processes are used to produce the unique Stansborough designs. The yarn is taken to the Stansborough Mill in Wellington for weaving. The looms at the mill weave their own strands of history, dating from the early 1890s. “They are amongst the first mechanical looms ever designed and add, rather than detract, from the general impression of intense individual involvement in production. Depending on the complication of each different weave, it can take two days to hand thread and set up each loom before weaving,” says Cheryl. “This intensity of involvement is in all parts of the process between farm and final products that are totally distinctive. Our inspiration for designs come from the environment in which the animals are farmed, tree barks, leaf forms and stunning vistas. Our team have spent years developing the many complicated undulating twill derived and other weaves, and our resulting fabric has a unique handmade and natural feel, quite different to other mass-produced commercial products.” The fabric has beautiful draping qualities, enhanced by the careful — sometimes created by hand — finishing to emphasise the lustre, drape and handling. “We have travelled the world and opened the markets up and we do a lot of high-end quality designs for international clients, but 50 per cent of our business is still national.” Throws, ties, scarves, wraps and cloaks have

been fashioned from the gleaming Stansborough fabric. We have worked a lot with the movie industry: including producing garments and items for the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Spartacus, Pete’s Dragon, The Water Horse and Kidnapped. It has been an honour to present New Zealand creations to the world. I believe wool has been underrated as a natural product — we could be using the lower grade wool across the country to make healthy and sustainable insulation for every home and slippers for children in schools and the elderly. “The value of it being breathable and environmentally friendly, safe, fire resistant and healthy is important to many people. “We are looking after the planet longterm by using natural fibres — people want things that will last in their homes for years to come and have something to snuggle up and you get natural comfort from wool — unlike man made fibres. You can use so many different types of wool — it just needs good imagination — our grey wool can be mixed with other fibres, including Alpaca and bamboo, and we want to use hemp in the future. “Wool absorbs energy and when used in carpet, you don’t get the gases that carpet glues used in synthetic gives off. Cheryl has worked furnished super yachts, boutique lodges and designer homes in New Zealand and overseas. Their designer blanket range has been gifted to VIPs worldwide, and has the backing of Campaign for Wool — led by Prince Charles. The Stansborough label is now recognised on the world

Alpacas are also a feature on the station where their fleece is mixed with wool to create a variety of yarns

stage for its innovative and highly prized, sustainable, textile creations. “We had no idea the results would be seen on cinema screens around the world. “The Lord of the Rings movies was our ultimate challenge, but now exporting to growing high-end markets is our biggest achievement. We are

pleased we found that flock of grey sheep, now registered as a wool breed in their own right, ‘Stansborough Greys’, when the downturn happened in farming in 1991 “The many years of selective breeding and hard work has certainly paid off and it is wonderful to take New Zealand to the world.”

Xanthea Nichols grew up on her family’s farm near Dargaville, Northland and as part of her Taratahi training programme experienced farming in Wairarapa.

“M

y father Shawn’s encouragement and positive farming attitude helped me decide I wanted to continue in his footsteps,” said Xanthea. As a second-year student at Taratahi Training Centre, she worked on a 500ha sheep and beef finishing farm and has received three scholarships for her studies. Xanthea is now working on Matapihi farm, a 673ha property running sheep, beef and dairy through Taratahi. “We have 60ha cropping and regrassing,

and this farm has been in the family for more than 100 years. It is a breeding and finishing farm, and the family have been slowly making the farm more intense over the years. “I am loving it here working alongside the manager and owner. At home, my dad runs dairy grazers and does cropping on our 1,000 acre property. The farm has diversified over the years and included running sheep and bulls,” says Xanthea. Shawn also attended Taratahi when he was 16 years old, along with his

friend Ronald. “When I was young, I would go out on the farm with dad and loved seeing him work the dogs and stock. When I was older and visiting Ronald in Ohakune, he told me to move a mob of sheep. I didn’t know what I was doing but succeeded, and decided I wanted to be a shepherd. “I did a Taratahi Taster Course and loved it. Last year I completed my level three and am studying level four drystock breeding — it has been an awesome experience. “I have learnt an incredible amount about the theory side of farming. My favourite thing is working the dogs, and I am breaking in a huntaway, and I have attended Anna Holland’s training courses. Anna has a brilliant training regime, and Lloyd Smith from the South Island is really good, and helps with dog trialling and has great bloodlines. I also have a heading dog and will get another huntaway in a few months.” Xanthea also entered in the Golden Shears event for the experience. “I learnt to shear through Taratahi, and in the future, I want to have time working in a shearing gang as part of gaining more knowledge and progressing through the industry. “The difference between Dargaville and the Wairarapa region is huge. It is a lot colder down south, but the other farmers in the area were really helpful and would check I was ok or if I needed any help. The district is a good place for training because there are many opportunities, especially as there are more sheep in this area.

“The area has good soil, and we planted ryegrass and had a lot of plantain. In summer it does get dry and hot but the animals adapt, and there is a lot of shelter in the paddocks and plentiful water supply.” Last year for her level four Xanthea received a $2,000 Westpac Scholarship, Jeff Farms $6,000 scholarship and recently a $4,000 Salvation Army scholarship. “My mum is also very supportive and proud of what I have accomplished. It certainly pays to apply for funding as it helps tremendously with costs. After this year I would like to gain large station experience and do my level five diploma. Ultimately I want to become a stock manager and pass my knowledge on to others. I would love to see more females in the industry, I thought it was going to be difficult to get a job, but employers are really encouraging. In the future, I would like to drive tractors in Canada or Scotland for experience and will probably return home eventually and take over my dad’s business and let him do what he wants. “You can go far in the industry working with the right people. I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for my dad’s encouragement. I have drawn from his experience many times, and he has been a huge support and taught me the basics that gave me a good knowledge base. “He is intrigued by what I am discovering, and I am now passing new knowledge on to him in return for the years he has invested in me.”

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

A healthy investment by Ann van Engelen Kate Hepburn grew up on a lifestyle property in Hawkes Bay where she developed a connection with healthy eating and environmental issues.

S

he has lived in the Wairarapa for more than 25 years, and through her business Papa Ora Creatives, make the health drink Kombucha from her love of good eating and desire to help others. “Papa Ora means ’healthy earth’, ‘Papa’ originated from Papatuanuku — mother earth, and ‘Ora’ meaning health — they are flavours from a healthy earth,” says Kate. ‘Kate’s Kombucha’ that she fondly calls ‘booch’ is made under the ‘Papa Ora’ brand. She also has a love of art and has been a ‘potter’ for years and makes products such as ‘butter bells’ and housewares. “I believe in living in a healthy environment through

an environmentally friendly lifestyle. I am vegan and gluten free, so I make a variety of different foods and we have always had a pet goat or cow, or crops ever since I was growing up in Hawkes Bay. “I discovered Kombucha when a friend gave me a ‘scobie’, which is the ‘mother’ base of the drink. It was also called mushroom tea and other names and take my Kombucha to the farmers markets. “It sounds Japanese as ‘Kombu’ is seaweed and ‘Cha’ is tea, but it originated in Russia and went through to China thousands of years ago.” Kate’s friend recommended she try the probiotic drink as it was ‘quite good’.

Kate Hepburn believes Kombucha helps people stay healthy and hydrated whilst out working on the farm

“I really liked it and started making it. My boys started drinking it and that is where it all began. One of our boys travels a lot and was drinking ‘booch’ everywhere he went. He said I make the best ever and suggested I sell it, and sales grew rapidly. “We mostly brew with our own produce using a double fermentation process. The fresh, simple flavours of the garden inspire my recipes.” The family live in an environmentally friendly way and like to reflect the business values and have a bottle return discount at the markets. “The secret to a good Kombucha is a secret — but you do need to be consistent and build it with love. I nurture mine, and use triple filtered rain water — when I go away I have someone to ‘boochsit’. “You need to get it before it goes to the vinegar stage. I don’t use honey as the honey bacteria interferes with the ‘booch’ bacteria. I am wary of sugar levels, and things in moderation — the drink also has vitamins like B, C and B12. “I believe it improves your health and people, including farmers, generally consume a lot of meat and milk, which can be inflammatory on your gut, and ‘booch’ can help stop bloating and indigestion. “It aids the good bacteria your system needs and I have doctors that buy it, because they know fermented foods are good for you. “Good bacteria and enzymes help the cells in your body function better. There are millions of bacteria in our

stomachs, but having good ones are important. It can help stop fuzziness in the brain and it cleanses your liver — the four main bacteria interact together in a positive way. It’s about detoxification, anti-oxidation, the energising properties and boosting our immunity as it gets rid of the free radicals. “From a farming perspective it can be used as a health tonic or as a refreshing low sugar drink for everyone including the elderly, fishermen, and hunters. We have seen really good health results and many people generally feeling better about themselves, and now they are return buyers for the drink. “My mum is 87 years old and loves it, she drinks it daily and she is fit and healthy. It is Kate says her product is full of good a natural ferment and can get bacteria and enzymes, which help the fizzy like a champagne. I add cells in your body function better ginger because of the health benefits, and I have more than recommend at first, you have a little 20 stockists at the moment. “Helping others makes me feel at a time as you don’t want changes brilliant. It is best taken first thing in happening too rapidly — it helps to the morning on an empty stomach, as clean your bowel as well. its not competing with anything else in “Staying as healthy as possible is your gut. what a lot of farmers are focussing on We also have it at night as an alcohol now, for good reason, it benefits them, replacement and some people even their families and farms. Understanding osteoarthritis by John Arts

Part 2 Last week we saw that damage to specialised cartilage cells called chondrocytes was the first step in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Research suggests that chondrocytes can be damaged by physical damage from accidents or gradually probably from insufficient dietary antioxidants. Cartilage is a tough matrix that includes living chondrocytes. The matrix of cartilage is a combination of proteins (mostly collagen), glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and water. The most abundant GAG is chondroitin sulphate. In my opinion, adding correct amounts of high-grade chondroitin is the single most important part of OA therapy. Cartilage is 80% water, which is why it acts as a shock absorber. GAG such as chondroitin readily attracts water. This is an important reason to stay well hydrated — a real problem with our ageing population. Cartilage then has two main components. What you see is the tough cartilage matrix. What you don’t see is the tiny chondrocytes tucked away in tiny cocoons called lacunae. When working properly, chondrocytes act like repair kits for cartilage. They actively

secrete new cartilage matrix when damaged or worn. My nutritional therapy for OA is firstly based on protecting chondrocytes by adding antioxidants. These include curcumin from turmeric but others such as trace minerals like selenium and grape seed extract. We then add compounds that help stimulate chondrocytes to make cartilage especially chondroitin but also glucosamine. I have one client who had a damaged shoulder and hip. Both caused him real problems. We increased antioxidants and added my joint complex, and he reports he is largely pain-free. I like to initially add 1500mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine with about 400mg of 95% curcumin extract (from turmeric). This is usually sufficient to start the healing process and often bring significant relief. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Scooping forestry awards Nearly 300 people representing all aspects of the forest industry celebrated the second annual Southern North Island Wood Council Training Awards in Palmerston North. Nine of the ten awards handed out on the night were won by entrants from Wairarapa-based contractors, with three being won by Dawson and Havard Logging — logging and roading contractors from Masterton. They were successful in the categories Harvesting Excellence, Outstanding Environmental Management and Contractor of the Year. “There was real pride in the winning of these awards, and I hope this recognition increases public awareness of the efforts being made in our industry with worker safety and environmental practices,” said company director, Mike Havard. People from Taranaki, Manawatu, Whanganui, Wairarapa, Wellington and Tararua attended the major event on the calendar of the local forestry sector. New CEO for the SNI Wood Council, Erica Kinder, said it was a rare occasion for many to get out of their workplaces and join together to applaud their achievements. “I am delighted at the level of commitment shown by attendees to travel such large distances. I think it shows the high value that our workers place on these awards, and I am extremely proud to have been involved

in showing appreciation to such a hardworking culture. Often these people are working long hours in extreme conditions, and their dedication to both safety and worker training deserves all the recognition we can give them.” Along with other sponsors, local company, The Stihl Shop, provided the awards with a $2,500 chainsaw, and Swazi vouchers of $500 were given to winners. “The SNI Wood Council is a representative organisation formed by a wide group of companies that work in the forestry sector in the lower North Island,” says Mrs Kinder. “Our members include forestry companies, sawmills, ports, trucking, nurseries, logging contractors and we are partnered with other organisations such as the Farm Forestry Association and the Forest Owners Association. There are five wood councils that have been running across the different regions of New Zealand for many years, and are non-profit organisations formed to promote the profile of the forest industries and work with local councils and other groups to achieve workable policies.” Visit our website sniwoodcouncil. co.nz for more details.

Who are you going to call? Those important jobs

by Ann van Engelen

When it comes to owning rural property, the responsibilities and maintenance can seem endless, and when ensuring things are done correctly, it is best to enlist the help of qualified professionals when the job at hand is out of your experience. With winter fast approaching and the weather becoming more unhelpful, now is a good time to check the state of your trees and check your waterways are clear. Hiring an experienced contractor means you have access to all of their knowledge — not just for land-clearing issues, but often tree maintenance and removal, drain and waterway clearing as well as other miscellaneous tasks at hand, which can often be dealt with by the one person. Have the contractor come in and check your large trees for safety, particularly if you are relatively new to the rural lifestyle. Removing or trimming them before the wet weather hits can save a lot of damage and stress. Falling

trees can endanger your life as well as your livestock, break fences or buildings and block waterways meaning the job becomes much more major and costly. Bringing in a contractor to help with silage, lucerne or haymaking requirements can save time and money on equipment. They can help from the cutting to the wrapping and stacking, freeing you up to take care of your everyday jobs. Clearing drains is easy when someone has the right machinery and experience to keep your water flowing throughout your land. A blocked creek can cause intense flooding and animal loss not to mention the risk of damage to equipment and buildings. Keeping waterways clear from debris such as fallen trees or sludge build up helps maintain more than just the water channel, it helps avoid many a negative experience. Installing new power poles and the like

MR DIRT

is also a job a contractor can help with as well as preparing an underpass or creating a new crossing for stock and vehicles. Asking those in your local

area for recommendations of local contractors is a good place to start and can save a lot of time, money and stress.

An appreciation of farming As both a farmer and an accountant, David of D B Osborne Ltd understands and appreciates the challenges and rewards that farming can bring. It is not just about the bottom line. For many of his farming clients, it is about the lifestyle that farming provides to them and their families, whilst balancing the needs to run the farm as a viable business. From the paddock to the books the team at DB Osborne Ltd have a depth of knowledge of what it takes for an economic farm surplus along with the need to utilise up-to-date modern technology. David’s hands-on experience running his own farming operations, both dairy and beef, put him in an ideal position to understand, appreciate and advise on issues farmers are experiencing, which can include on-farm health and safety requirements, employee issues, managing the banks and more. Whilst we can not control the weather, the dairy payout and beef/lamb prices we are able to provide end to end accounting services and advice. We work to your time frames supplying up-to-date financial details that

enables you to forward plan to achieve maximum success versus looking in the rear vision mirror. This up-to-date information includes budgeting and forecasting, assessing tax obligations to enable you to make informed decisions that impact on your day-to-day farming operations along with long-term planning — whether it is feed for the season or capital expenditure, for example, a trip to the Fieldays to purchase that new tractor or effluent system. Give David and the team a call on 06 304 8550 to discuss how they can work with you to ensure that you can grow your farming operations for current and future generations. David is more than happy to put on the gumboots and visit you down on the farm.

This obviously includes contractors and subcontractors who play a major role on farms. Farm owners’ and managers’ responsibilities extend to the health and safety of everyone who works on the farm — full-time, parttime, casual employees, contractors and their employees, subcontractors and consultants. Worksafe NZ has laid down guidelines for both principal and contractor. Contractors and subcontractors have the same duty of care to their employees as any other employer. Contractors need to know what the principal’s (farmer’s) health and safety procedures are so they can assess their employees’ safety on-site. Farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that workers face and how the site will be made safe. “Such things as forecast drought and the lower forecast milk price could see some farmers under huge pressure,” says Rural Contractors NZ president, Steve Levet.

“However, there are things on-farm that have to be done — no matter what — such as supplementary feed and crop harvesting. Contractors are professionals and are especially set-up to help out when these jobs need to be done on-farm.” Rural Contractors is the only national association and the leading advocate for rural contractors in the country, and while accrediting members to provide assurance to farmers of the qualifications and reliability of its members, the organisation also monitors central and local government policies, plans and proposals on behalf of its membership. It also maintains close relations with a wide number of organisations, government departments and other national bodies. This assures best practice when the contractor, staff and machinery move onto the farm. RCNZ represent the interests of contractors engaged in a wide range of activities such as land development, drainage, fencing, cultivation and planting, harvesting of crops, highway vegetation, parks,

reserves and landscaping, chemical application, sheep dipping and direct drilling. RCNZ monitors central and local government policies, plans and proposals on behalf of their membership. They also maintain close relations — and lobby on behalf of their members — with a wide number of organisations, government departments and other national bodies. Affiliated contractors can be found on the RCNZ website.

Reduce winter nitrogen loss The coldest months of the year are just around the corner, so farmers should be particularly cautious when applying nitrogen fertilisers to pasture or crops. “Winter applications of nitrogen fertilisers are generally the least effective for promoting grass growth. That’s because slow growth of pasture in winter and greater drainage can result in nitrate leaching before plants can take it up,” says Waikato Regional Council sustainable agriculture adviser, Bala Tikkisetty. “The nitrogen may make its way to waterways where it can stimulate nuisance algal growth. Lactating cows excrete, in urine, about 70 per cent of the nitrogen they consume. Again, the risk of this nitrogen leaching from urine patches is much higher in winter.” Bala says some of the research to mitigate nitrogen losses has focussed on: growing pasture with more rooting depth for interception of nitrate, reducing the amount of time animals spend on pasture and feeding high-sugar grasses to reduce the amount of nitrogen lost in urine. “Nutrient budgeting using computer models such as Overseer, combined with feed budgeting, enables farmers to understand whether they are using too much or too little fertiliser. doing this, farmers can optimise the use of nutrients and reduce the impact on the environment by working out a pragmatic nutrient management plan. Understanding the term ‘response rate’ helps farmers when it comes to implementing these plans.” The response rate is the amount of pasture grown in terms of kilograms of dry matter (DM) per kilogram of nitrogen (N) applied. When 20kg N/ha is applied and an additional 200kg DM/ha of pasture is grown the response rate is 10kg DM/kg N applied. “The response is dependent on several factors such as soil temperature, plant growth, soil moisture, the deficiency of available nitrogen in the soil and the rate of nitrogen applied per application. “The best response to N fertiliser occurs on fast-growing pasture when other factors such as moisture and soil temperature are not limiting growth. Response rate variation also depends on the season and on nitrogen application rate. In winter, at the same application rate, responses are lower and slower than other times of the year.

“It is better to apply nitrogenous fertiliser when the pasture cover is 1,500–1,800kg DM/ha. This ensures that there is sufficient leaf area for photosynthesis leading to good pasture growth. “Remember that the profitability of applying nitrogen is dependent on the utilisation of the extra feed. Therefore, nitrogen needs to be strategically applied to fill genuine feed deficits. Reducing nitrate leaching by adapting grazing systems to alternative plant species and cultivars has been a major focus of research in the recent past. “Plantain emerged as an important pasture herb that has a proven ability to reduce nitrate losses. Plantain reduces the concentration of N in the animal urine and allows plants to take up a greater proportion of the N, which in turn reduces leaching. “I am happy to say that a number of farmers, as well as industry organisations, are already doing a great job trying to increase productivity and reduce environmental impacts through more careful use of nutrients.”
