Building Team Lamb

The Wairarapa Farming Lifestyles is published with pride by NorthSouth Multi Media Ltd, a privately owned New Zealand company.

After a recent visit to the United Kingdom and Europe, B+LNZ director Andrew Morrison says it wouldn’t take much of a shift in consumer behaviour to make a significant difference to the global lamb market, and ultimately grower returns.

and export markets and processors need to be part of that conversation. “Certainly, there is real interest in grass-fed lamb, so coupled with the best in-season production, we all have a fantastic product to take to the international market place,” says Mr Morrison. “I was travelling with B+LNZ chairman James Parson on what for him is an annual visit. Along with politicians and trade officials, we met with a number of farmer lobby groups in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France. It highlighted to me the value of building and maintaining long-term relationships with these groups and full credit needs to be given to previous chairmen and CEOs for their work in this area. “It means when situations change, such as Brexit, we are not just appearing on the doorstep wanting our voices heard. “As a sheep farmer, it was really gratifying to see our interests are being well served by some outstanding people in the UK and Brussels.”

ARE YOUR GIRLS LAYING GOLDEN EGGS? No, we didn’t think so!

Reduced teat end damage

“The visit highlighted just how much we, as international lamb producers, have in common,” says Mr Morrison. “All of us want to produce the best eating experience for our consumer and be rewarded for it but the challenge is growing the number of consumers who choose lamb over other proteins.” Across the EU, per head lamb consumption sits at just 1.9kg/head while beef is 10.9kg/head. “It wouldn’t take much of a shift in consumer behaviour to make a significant difference to the global lamb market and ultimately grower returns. EU producers can only produce 87 percent of what is consumed within those countries. France, for example, only produces 46 percent of its total lamb requirements so there is certainly plenty of opportunity for future growth.” He says as lamb producers, it is in all of our best interests to work together to promote lamb and lift overall consumption. “As ‘Team Lamb’ we need to work out how we are going to do that rather than try and shut each other out of any one market. The most obvious opportunity for New Zealand is our counter-seasonal production which offers consumers the best-of-season lamb eating experience. I like to draw an analogy with strawberries or asparagus. We all love that fresh seasonal produce rather than something that has been sitting in a chiller for months on end and New Zealand can offer consumers in the Northern Hemisphere prime, seasonal spring lamb.” There is also opportunity to work with our British and European colleagues to supply product for both internal

Milk flows despite low prices

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

In a year which saw the lowest milk prices in at least 20 seasons, milk production declined just one and a half per cent, according to the New Zealand Dairy Statistics 2015–16 released by DairyNZ and LIC. Milk production eased slightly despite 52 fewer herds and 20,522 less cows than in 2014–15. In total, dairy companies processed 20.9 billion litres of milk containing 1.86 billion kilograms of milk solids in 2015–16. This compares to 21.2 billion litres of milk the previous season. “The average kilograms of milk solids produced per cow has gradually increased over the last 15 years and enables our industry to maintain high production year-on-year,” said Matthew Newman, DairyNZ senior economist. “On average, each cow produced 373kgMS last season — very near the 2014–15 record of 377kgMS and still above the 2013–14 production of 371kgMS. On average last season, each cow produced 4,185 litres of milk.” Overall herd numbers fell for the first time since 2007–08, now totalling 11,918. North Island herd numbers declined 122 to 8,696, while South Island herds increased 70 herds to 3,222. Farm ownership structures are also changing, with 30 per cent of New Zealand dairy herds operating under a sharemilking agreement in 2015–16, compared with 32.4 per cent in 2014– 15. Owner-operator herds increased 256 to 8,315 herds in 2015–16, reflecting variable order sharemilkers moving to contract milking agreements after financial challenges with low milk prices in recent seasons. “The number of cows milked in 2015–16 declined 0.4 per cent

to 4.998 million, despite a very high number of culled cows during the last two seasons. This reflects a high number of replacement heifers entering the milking herd in 2015–16, plus some carry over cows being culled. A further decline in the number of cows milked is expected this season,” said Mr Newman. Changes in dairy breeds continue, with HolsteinFriesian/Jersey crossbreeds now comprising 47.2 per cent of cows compared to 45.6 per cent in 2014– 15. Holstein-Friesians now make up 33.5 per cent of the national herd compared Matthew Newman, DairyNZ senior economist to 34.7 per cent in 2014– 15, and Jerseys comprise 10.1 per cent compared to 10.4 per cent the previous season. LIC NZ markets general manager Malcolm Ellis says genetics and feeding these animals FLORIST & GIFTS well ensures continual improvement Fresh flowers for all occasions and a huge in milking productivity of New Zealand selection of awesome gifts. dairy cows. Mr Ellis says this is a result of farmers being more cautious in the 06 376 6201 | wendy@fabflowerz.nz lower milk price environment. 127 Main Street Pahiatua 4910 “However, farmers understand the value of herd improvement and the expectation is for activity to rebound in line with the milk price.” As seen at Fieldays®

by Ayla Miller Mary Biggs had always dreamt of growing fields of organic lavender and in 1999, her husband, herself and their four young children moved to Featherston in search of the good life.

T

hey established themselves in a beautiful and historic homestead built in 1868 and together with her friends Mary planted a paddock of lavender. “We moved to Featherston for a number of different reasons and one of the key things was the beautiful house, beautiful surroundings and the country. We wanted the kids to have a country education,” she said.

It wasn’t very long before she realised she would need help growing the lavender organically as it involved a lot of weeding, so she started making lemon cordial in a blue glass bottle to raise funds to hire someone. “At this time artisan food was just starting out so there was very little competition and because the product tasted lovely, looked beautiful, and was a universal crowd pleaser, it became very popular

Mary had always had a hankering for country life

very quickly.” Soon Mary had to shift her focus from the lavender to the lemon cordial as the lavender was too labour intensive for a mother of four. “One of the difficulties I found with the lavender was that you not only had to grow it and turn it into a product, you then had to market it and so on.” The cordial began to take off and a

commercial kitchen was built into their property. “When I first started off I was using the local RSA kitchen but that was tricky because I had to pack everything up, unpack and clean the kitchen before 3pm every day.” In 2001 she planted a paddock of about 100 lemon trees. Up until then she had been sourcing

lemons from people’s backyards in exchange for the cordial and later other lemon products. “People were extremely generous with their lemons and loved receiving the cordial and later a whole range of lemon products in exchange. We grow Meyer lemons because they are hardy. We get two or three good strong frosts in the Wairarapa each year so we needed to get Meyer lemons because they were able to cope with the frosts.” Mary and her husband Peter, better known as ‘Biggsy’, have a section of land stretching over 35 acres on which they raise a few organic lambs for their freezer. “We have planted an enormous number of native and deciduous trees. My husband does most of that and discovered he had a real passion for trees once we moved here.” The cordial began to be sold in upmarket stores and gift shops nationwide and Mary says because she chose to package it in a blue glass bottle it became very distinctive. “I loved the blue colour and I’m a very visual person and I just thought it worked well. “All my life I’ve been aware of beautiful things and been surrounded by them. It’s such a lovely thing to try to achieve. To collect beauty around you or to be able to recognise beauty around you. If you can do that you can be a happy person. You don’t need to be sad if you

can look out and see beautiful things.” Mary is also a trained cordon bleu cook and studied at the London Cordon Bleu School in 1983 when it opened up in Auckland. These days there is no more lavender although she has some cuttings off the original plants and the cordial business has closed up and she has gone back to her cooking roots by opening a cooking school which she launched in April this year. “We live in a very beautiful place and we feel very privileged to have this experience and I thought it would be good to share it with other people. “We have planted a lot of vegetable gardens, and we have a chook run and a creek. “We have bee hives on the farm and people forage during the lesson and then we use what they have gathered in the meals. Then we all sit down for a meal which is matched with local Wairarapa wines.” Mary says she was initially attracted to the country life because of her huge respect for country people. “I love the fact that they are generally very down to earth and practical. I wanted that and I wanted my children to grow up with other children that had been brought up like that. “Both Biggsy and I had a hankering for the space and the privacy and working with nature. It is a real treat to get your hands dirty.”

PRESERVING FAMILY HISTORY BY ANN MORGAN Neil and Gregory Montgomerie-Crowe are the owners of Kahikatea Gardens which they describe as a New Zealand country garden with an assortment of friendly animals.

I

t is a small lifestyle farm of 15 hectares and the couple run Murray Grey cross and Dexter beef cattle that they buy in as weaners and raise. “The land is flat with good soil and a mixture of stoney areas which is good for the winter. We have good alluvial soil for the summer so it’s a mixture and we don’t over graze. Our stock live a very happy life,” says Neil. “We try not to over drench or anything like that. One of our basic aims is to have happy stock and we like to think they go off in a nice state — the beef is lovely in flavour and texture.” A few years back the men were trying to add

different grasses and went to a local store for a herbal mix. “The store looked at us like ’what are you talking about’ and now you see plantain and chicory and stuff for sale all the time. The importance of herbal mixtures for stock has become common knowledge.” The property also has a small orchard with nut trees, mainly walnuts, and a mixture of animals including mini horses, alpacas, donkeys, a deer and pet sheep “We have a mix of sheep including Gotlands and various breeds including South Suffolk, Arapawa and odds and

sods interbred over the years. We keep them for up to 18 months and then they go off to visit Gordon Ramsay or something like that,” says Neil. “I am the third generation of our family to live on the property. There has always been a garden which has grown through the generations. My parents started developing it and I became more involved after my dad died. “When Greg and I moved here we joined the garden all together and made it what is it is today and now call it a country garden because we used to call it a rustic garden and people thought it was old. “It is not a formal garden with clipped boxes and iceberg roses and lavender, you may see those, but it is a country garden developed from sheep paddocks, old totara post rail fences, stones collected off the paddocks for edging, posts as artworks, and old horse drawn vehicles with roses growing on them.” Things from around the farm including old pieces of machinery have made interesting pieces of artwork. “We are very lucky that the backdrop of the garden is old totara and titoki and we have a large kahikatea which is around about 900 years old, that is why we called it Kahikatea Gardens.” The farm was originally the Cotter Estate which was a large holding and in 1916 Neil’s grandfather had the opportunity to purchase part of it. “When my grandfather had the property it was 300 acres, and has been downsized since then. The house was built in 1916 and has undergone many renovations over the years. “My

November 2016

The property is not a formal garden and has a wide variety of trees and plants on show parents started planting rhododendrons and camellias and other bits have been added on over the years. We still have my grandfather’s old cow shed from before he moved into sheep and beef cattle. “As farmers back then they collected a wide range of equipment and nothing was thrown away as it ‘might be useful one day’ so we have an interesting collection of farm memorabilia.” These range from old bottles and tins to old seed drills, a thrasher and the old stables. “We work full time on our block, there is always something to do. People think we spend all our time at cafes but we don’t have time for that,” he says. “We open the gardens mostly for groups. It is something different and

it is an opportunity to see a diverse garden. A lot of older men come to see the farm aspect with the implements in the sheds and the animals. We sell walnuts and jams which are branded Rexworthy Cottage.” The label ‘Rexworthy’ comes from Neil’s great grandmother, Elizabeth Rexworthy who migrated to New Zealand from England with her husband Henry Lenton Gray. “Greg makes the jams and things and does the cooking. “It is lovely to be able to carry on the generational property and to have a sense of history. “We have a wonderful collection of photographs of our grandparents and these add to the specialness of what we have.”

The mystery of pumps

November 2016

9

In most water reticulation or irrigation systems, you are going to need a pump, unless the water is from a pressurised scheme at farm gate or as some lucky farmers I visited recently in Middlemarch Otago have, gravity fed from surrounding hills — a whole 160psi of it! Could this be why some couplings had leaking O-rings? I often get asked about gravity for irrigation but there are a lot of considerations, enough for another blurb perhaps? Pumps work via energy transferred from the shaft to the water in the pump body. So what? Well the critical thing here is that energy costs money, pumping usually occurs over a considerable period and the wrong pump can, consequently, be a very expensive purchase! Just as Mum’s shopping basket’s engine has a different power curve to the farm ute, which is also different to a truck engine, so pumps are also massively different in performance and efficiency at the particular performance you require. Yes, you may get away with towing the boat with Mum’s shopping basket — for a short duration, but the fuel bill is going to be the highest ever and it can’t last. It’s the same with pumps. I often see pumps from clearance sales which have run a low pressure system, being applied to a medium or high pressure system. After all ‘it’s a big pump isn’t it? The guy before was running way more gear than me’. Yup, but now your diesel motor is valve bouncing trying to produce the pressure required, and also the pump is not running in its ‘happy spot’. You could also be pressurising a lot of water, which is going nowhere due to different irrigation flow. Energy cost again! Actually the chance of buying the right pump from a clearance sale are about the same as a winning lottery ticket! One in a million. The best efficiency is usually somewhere around two-thirds full flow on most pumps. This is not maximum pressure, so beware of advertising stuff from certain companies saying ‘Max flow… Max pressure’. This does not mean you can get both at once. Even then some of the claims

are at best, ‘optimistic’, as observed by our technicians. Buying a pump Using a reputable irrigation professional should avoid these pitfalls. 1. Ask for proof that the pump you are considering is the correct one! Pump curves are not so difficult to read and you can always ask regional council field staff or other professionals to help impartially. Irri-Max Ltd and others have an open policy about what the client is getting. Don’t allow ‘secret squirrel’ stuff. Look for the best efficiency point — is this the same as your intended flow? Does the pump have the ability to produce the required pressure at reasonable input speed? Ask about the pumps Nett Positive Suction Head (NPSH). You might not understand it but a simple calculation is this — start with value of nine then subtract your suction height (pump above water), then see if the balance is larger than the NPSH value at your intended flow. Say your pump is 4m above water (not the best installation), then the NPSH can not be more than five, in fact even this would be a call to get some proper hydraulic engineering done to avoid disappointment. Probably pump techs

will laugh at my equation above as there are more factors to it than this, but my intention is merely to give the layman some warning signs of what may work or not. NPSH available varies massively from pump to pump! 2. Have you the right of return if it doesn’t meet specs? What is the cost of this ‘experiment’? eg you may have to change mounting points, flanges, engineering, etc if it doesn’t work and you need to fit another model. Don’t buy a pig in a poke! 3. Pressure gauges: Insist the pump has a pressure gauge so you can verify the promised performance on your system. 4. Is the suction system large enough? Avoid the ‘thick shake with small straw effect’. 5. Irri-Max Ltd have been importing and supplying irrigation and effluent pumps for more than 20 years. Managing farm risks

Taking pressure off sore joints

Sometimes health problems can become a sort of vicious cycle.

Al McCone, WorkSafe’s Agriculture Programme Manager

Farmers, both employers and employees, are also more likely to be working alone at busy times, so having a plan in place for lone workers means that if anything goes wrong, the alarm could be raised. “Like most risk management processes, it doesn’t need to be complicated,” said Mr McCone. “There are a number of solutions that send out ‘man down’ or just location signals. If you can’t afford these, then get a simple system in place where people check in at agreed times. If they don’t, then check on them.” The fatalities highlight the importance of good risk management and following safe practices. For more information on staying healthy and safe on farm, go to www. saferfarms.org.nz.

WorkSafe’s data from 2015 shows that experienced farmers carrying out routine jobs with vehicles are getting caught out. In 2015, there were 19 fatalities on farms — 16 of those involved vehicles. In more than 50 per cent of the incidents, farmers were aged over 55 and driving vehicles on sloping or uneven ground. “These were mature and experienced people doing jobs they would have done many times before,” said Al McCone, WorkSafe’s Agriculture Programme manager. “Examining vehicle fatalities from the last three years, we find that often the driver/rider had set out to do a fairly routine task like spraying or stock work.” The incidents had some common factors like operators or others being hit by the vehicle, or being killed during a rollover. “To keep yourself safe make sure the vehicle won’t move when you get out, and wear seatbelts when in the cab or roll frame. Extra care is needed when working on or near slopes, especially on tracks with steep drop-offs.” The quads involved in the fatalities ranged in age and size, and were often in sound mechanical condition, however, low tyre tread depth and under-inflated or uneven tyre pressure was noted as a possible contributing factor in some cases. Often the vehicle had slid on a slope and a number of incidents involved quad bikes overturning into drains, ditches or waterways. “Good practice like keeping at least one metre from a stream or culvert edges, stopping and dismounting to spray, and working out ‘no go’ areas on farm in advance could all help prevent incidents,” said Mr McCone. “Any vehicle is only as good as the way it is maintained and used. Make sure tyres and brakes, especially the handbrake on tractors, are in good condition. It is essential operators know how to use the vehicles properly.”

Osteoarthritis can cause significant joint pain which limits mobility and can reduce the ability to exercise. Reduced mobility leads to weight gain which further reduces mobility and add extra stress to arthritic joints. I have had many clients in this situation and it can be very distressing. When someone is overweight and has arthritis in weight-bearing joints my goal with diet is initially just to create a healthier diet. If we just focus on weight loss this can create another cycle of yoyo dieting which has limited benefits and is a cause of psychological stress. Every meal should be nutrient dense with anti-inflammatory fats and regular protein. A nutrient dense breakfast could be eggs or wholegrain oats with freshly ground flaxseeds, dark berries and good yoghurt. Morning tea could be a piece of fruit and some raw almonds. Lunch could be a fish and avocado salad with olive oil and cider vinegar dressing. Afternoon tea homemade hummus and vegetable sticks. For dinner some protein, lots of raw and cooked low starch vegetables with

anti-inflammatory oils such as olive, avocado or coconut. To make a difference we need to start to break the cycle. We start with a nutrient dense diet that is at the same time anti-inflammatory that will over time result in weight loss. Supplements are very important and I add these like a 3 legged stool. Firstly we add antioxidants to slow the rate of cartilage loss. We then reduce inflammation with fish oils and curcumin (from turmeric) then add joint compounds especially chondroitin at over 800mg daily. These combined measure help reduce pain, reduce weight, improve mobility and the real payoff are improvements in energy and general health. Fee free top contact me to discuss your situation. How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

Holiday Guide Rural security measures Holiday time is a prime time for thieves, especially on rural properties, and often just a few simple precautions taken around the property can work as a deterrent.

Sometimes expensive security systems act as a signal to burglars that there is something worth stealing. A more simple option is to keep the most expensive items locked away in a secure place out of sight. Always be careful about who you invite onto the property, for example contractors, before you go away and who you tell your holiday plans too. Word can get out if you have something particularly interesting stored on your property. It can pay to leave a vehicle parked in the driveway to give the appearance that you are home if possible and this puts a question mark in the burglar’s mind. Setting lighting timers can be a useful way to deter thieves also. If they have spent time scoping out the place beforehand, they will be uncertain as to whether anyone is actually home or not. Tell your neighbours you are going to be away and ask if they can clear the letterboxes or keep the lawns mowed if you will be away for a significant

time, so the house doesn’t look empty from the road. If you have livestock, someone should be checking on your property daily, but even if you don’t, it is important to make sure someone is keeping an eye on your place for the duration of your getaway. Keeping in touch with other neighbours and community members also pays. Have a look at the police reports in the papers. If there have been a number of break-ins recently, it is even more important to make sure your security measures are up to scratch. It can also help to know if there are any hotspots for crime and if you are living in one. Don’t leave expensive tools or machinery in plain view and if possible lock them up or store them away in a shed or garage. Anything that’s not tied down is a potential target. Never leave a holiday message on your answering machine or post on Facebook your holiday plans. You can share those amazing selfies when you get back. Whilst you’re away just concentrate on having a good time and fish for those ‘likes’ when you are safely home. Waimarama Seaside Resort

A taste of Sicily

The colourful Island of Sicily is where we introduce you to our friends, who own the local restaurants where you taste seasonal dishes and local delicious wines. Sicily is a wonderland for tourists looking for something new, or old — in fact the best sights are from the ancient world. In Agrigento’s Valley of Temples you’ll see one of the three most perfect temples in the Greek world. At Selinunte you will find one of the largest of all known Greek temples. Villa Romana del Casale in Enna, with more than 3,500 square metres of mosaics, is one of the best-preserved villas anywhere and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So are the twin towns of Ragusa and Modica for representing Europe’s zenith of Baroque art. Both the stunning mosaics and the exquisite cloister at Monreale are considered highlights of European art, and the collections at Palermo’s Archeological Museum rank it as one of Italy’s best. Natural wonders have their place, with Mount Etna Europe’s tallest active volcano. And you’ll love Sicily for its local culture and spirited people. Meet a family who show us around their farm, coming face to face with the grand buffalo that produce their mozzarella. The farm produces a variety of meats and in their restaurant we taste their products during a leisurely long lunch — just one interesting occasion as we travel around Sicily for two weeks, at a gentle pace. Our regular clients choose to travel with us when ‘quality is better than quantity’. They thank us for immersing

FROM THE GROUND UP Technology for a future proof home The recent ‘big reveal’ by inventor and Tesla corporation owner Elon Musk of solar-electric tiles for future homes has amazed many but not those already involved in the building industry. Technology which incorporates power saving or sustainable elements is firmly in fashion, with opinions changing here in New Zealand to follow global trends. While it may be some time before Tesla’s photovoltaic tiles replace Kiwi corrugated steel on the nation’s roofs, a groundswell of change has moved through the building industry already. Stolidly accepted mainstays of a new build like the hot water heater and septic tank are being ousted by modern

alternatives such as califonts, solar hot water heaters, composting waste systems and efficient heat pumps. Where once the design of a home was dictated by right angles and Victorian aesthetics, today’s homes work with the land to trap available sunlight, breathe with the seasons and minimise energy wastage. In fact, the top three technologies asked about in builds and renovations all revolve around saving energy and

TURTON FARM SUPPLIES Sheds • Yards • Woolsheds • Stockbridges hence saving money. Photovoltaic cells, windmills and battery arrays are often mooted by prospective home owners, and a calculation as to how soon the investment in such infrastructure will be offset is the critical figure here. acknowledged as vital all over. And the cost of producing hot water has been addressed with a host of new options, calling on homeowners to decide between not just gas califonts, solar heaters, ‘wet-back’ wood fires and heat pump electric cylinders, but also hybrid combi-systems of all the above. When looking at new technology to make your new build or renovation sustainable, it’s wise to consider the payback time of the system you choose. While there is certainly a sense of pride in reducing our impact on the planet, the real cost to benefit analysis comes down to increasing the value of your home and decreasing outgoings to power companies within a span of years, not decades.

FROM THE GROUND UP

The answer lies beneath

QUALITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Building begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home define what is to grow above. But in fact, like the rest of the house, this ‘home base’ will need to revisited during the life of the house. This may be more so in rural areas where some farm buildings may have started life in pioneer days. Over time piles can rot away causing them to fail, while ground conditions may change from a number of causes — water reticulation, or even earth tremors. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result. This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation. Ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job

and different suppliers use different methods — some cut holes in the floor for access and some lift the entire house on jacks to make room to work. Repiling requires a building permit —

other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit so it pays to plan ahead.

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

DAIRY

The value of effluent management Clean waterways are an ongoing rural concern highlighted by the fact that, tens of thousands of shoreline plantings have begun to make a big difference in water quality. But the real key to quality long term lies with the farmer. On the agricultural front the value of animal effluent is a fact of life and has consequences for the bottom line. Effluent disposal also means effluent utilisation. The by product, particularly of dairying, is a great fertiliser. It contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S) and trace elements that you’d normally pay for to have applied to pasture. The average dairy herd of 250 animals produces the same amount of effluent as a medium sized rural town. When spread over land and applied correctly the effluent of 100 cows can save thousands of dollars. While it might be ‘liquid gold’ water troughs need to be protected from spray sources as well as waterways, where the rule is to keep the distribution 50 metres away. Soil can only filter so much effluent and therefore application depths should

be adjusted accordingly to reflect soil and weather conditions. Too much effluent can kill pasture — especially where effluent has ‘ponded’ on the soil surface as well as polluting nearby streams and rivers as it runs off paddocks into waterways. Then there is ground water itself that must be protected, and that’s where local knowledge comes into play. Getting a certified assessor can be good practice, particularly when effluent systems have been upgraded. You may not be aware of all the rules that must be complied with. Dairy industry advice is that when buying or selling a farm, it’s advisable to get an independent person to prepare a comprehensive report. The assessor checks over the entire farm where there are areas that effluent collects and the corresponding infrastructure, including feed pads, underpasses, storage ponds and the

irrigation network as well as a lot more. It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and four hours to complete. A report is then prepared for the farm owner or manager. Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to

assess the current system on farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WoF’ assessors. All the information that is gathered is stored in a central database at QCONZ. It is only used to analyse trends on farms over time and to see if there are any areas of concern that the dairy industry needs to focus more attention on.

If you would prefer to transport your animal yourself or have your horse or cow put down on the farm then we can arrange this with a No Hassell guarantee.

Wairarapa Diesel Services

New chapter in a motoring legend by Andy Bryenton

There are some names in the world of internal combustion which evoke images of racing glory, grand-touring luxury or off-road grit. Just mention Rolls-Royce, Ferrari or Land Rover, and a whole history springs to mind. But there are few, even in such lofty company, which call up such a tradition as that of the United States’ most famous two-wheeled icon — Harley Davidson. With a history spanning over a century, this is one badge embraced by racers, weekend cruisers and rebels alike. From the original ‘silent grey fellow’ through to the ‘knucklehead’ V-twin of World War Two, through to the big powerful V-rod of the present day, the story of the machines from Milwaukee would seem to describe an upward curve of displacement and power. But that’s a stereotype which, in true rebellious fashion, Harley Davidson is set to challenge with its Street 500 range. Stripped back and pared down to the essentials of city riding, the Street 500 is a pure Harley down to the nuts and bolts, but it is no big highway cruiser. With a 500cc Revolution X engine, finely

balanced frame and frugal fuel economy, this is a bike meant to take on the competition in a sector usually dominated by the Japanese motorcycle giants. It’s not the first Harley Davidson to go below the 883 Sportster in terms of displacement, but it is a new take on a classic design, reminiscent in many ways of classic British bikes from the golden age rather than the wicked custom Road Kings and Fat Boys which made the Harley name synonymous with two-wheeled power and style. That may seem a touch blasphemous, but it’s a growing market niche in the crowded urban jungle. The Street 500 is, as you’d expect from a real HD, no slouch when the horizon beckons. Liquid cooling means the 500 never loses its cool in gridlock, but this lightest Harley of all still packs a wallop of torque when the lights turn green. In true form for a machine bearing the classic black and orange badge, there’s no part of the

Street 500 which doesn’t look mean, lean and customisable. It’s a breath of fresh air in more ways than one — a city cruiser proudly selfdescribed as a ‘cafe racer’, but one which stands out in the crowd, with retro styling cues that leave no doubt as to its heritage. It’s a Harley Davidson for those who may never have considered getting into the saddle of this iconic brand — an enticement away from the Japanese and Euro street fighters and into a very affordable take on motorcycling’s most enduring classic.
