Love our forests Our children do New Zealand has 1.7 million hectares of highly productive, sustainablymanaged, plantation forests. These forests are a wonderful environment for recreation and enjoyment – whether for the exhilaration of mountain biking, the tranquillity of walking or the fun of having a picnic amongst the trees. We are fortunate to have these forest playgrounds, letting us connect with an abundant and natural environment.

MPI placed a ban on growing peas in July within a specified area and placed controls on moving pea material, seed and untreated pea straw, in/out and within this area for the next two years. The controls, which have been developed in partnership with the pea industry, are set out in a legal Controlled Area Notice which makes the whole of the Wairarapa, up to and including Pahiatua, a controlled area. MPI’s Director Investigation, Diagnostic Centres and Response, Dr Veronica Herrera says the team, along with the pea growing industry, considered a range of measures to control the insect pest, but ultimately agreed with international experts that the temporary ban on growing peas in the Wairarapa would have the greatest chance of success. Six businesses are competing in three categories this year and the ultimate winner will receive the supreme prize for the Enterprising Rural Women Awards. Rural Women New Zealand’s annual awards showcase rural women who run their own successful businesses. For the entrants, it is an opportunity to promote their innovative rural enterprise and gain recognition for their contribution to their community. The 2016 ERWA categories are Emerging Enterprising Rural Woman Award, Innovative Enterprising Rural Woman Award and Entrepreneurial Enterprising Rural Woman Award. “This year we have seen some very dynamic businesses emerging in the regions,” said RWNZ National President and judge for the awards Wendy McGowan. The judging panel also includes representatives from our partners ANZ Bank, Swazi New Zealand and HP New Zealand. They have been impressed by the high calibre of entries and “outstanding rural businesswomen.” The entrants this year include Barbara Faulls of Smiths Farm Holiday Camp, Picton. Smiths Farm is proud to offer a quality holiday with space, peace and the clean country air and has been rated as

4+STAR and Enviro Silver by Qualmark. Next is Bernadette Jackson of LaValla Estate, Tuakau. She runs a function and event centre with accommodation and a theatre. The venue recently hosted the Fieldays Bachelor Breakfast with Rural Women New Zealand. Fellow entrant Marian Hirst is from Bay Blueberries, Hastings. She is passionate about producing quality apples and blueberries in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. Monique and Lyn Neeson of Shear Warmth, Taumarunui are also competing. They are producers of top quality wool blankets, made in New Zealand and can be traced back to wool grown on the family farm. Helen Slattery of Slattery Contracting Limited, Matamata is another entrant. The Slattery Family has been involved in Ag Contracting since the mid 1950s, starting haymaking and cultivating land. Finally there is Amy Dibley of Physio Direct, Rotorua. Amy started Physio Direct when she realised that many small rural areas do not have adequate physiotherapy services. She grew up on a dairy farm in Ngongotaha on the

Cwmglyn Farmhouse Cheese is made from the milk from one of the smallest commercial dairy farms in New Zealand and is located in the foothills of the Tararua Range.

BIDDY AND COLIN WORK TOGETHER WITH COLIN RUNNING THE MIDDLETON MODEL RAILWAY EXHIBITION AND BIDDY MAKING THE CHEESE

iddy Fraser-Davies and her husband Colin have been married since 1984 and together they run the farm with the help of a local woman from Eketahuna. “Colin and I work together in partnership. He does most of the milking and farm work and runs the Model Railway exhibition which is open to the public, and I do all the cheesemaking,” says Biddy. “Colin’s father was a Welshman called Glyn. He died very suddenly and unexpectedly so we called the property after him as a memorial — Cwm is the

Welsh word for valley so it means Glyn’s valley.” Cwmglyn Farmhouse Cheese started when one of Colin and Biddy’s dairy farming neighbours gave them a late born Jersey heifer calf to rear. “When she was grown and had her own calf she swamped us with milk and Fonterra do not pick up from one cow. So at the ripe old age of 60 I had to teach myself to milk a cow and make cheese.” They never looked back and now have four cows. Biddy milks the cows in a single herring-bone cowshed and then makes the cheese in her licenced and purpose-

Cwmglyn cheese is made in the traditional English farmhouse style with a wholly natural rind. “We only make traditional aged hard farmhouse cheese. This is made the same way as a cheddar with a wholly natural rind sealed with our own Cwmglyn clarified butter. At the end of 2014, a single cheese I sent to the World Cheese Awards in London won a Super Gold Award — there were 2700 entries from 33 different countries and mine was one of the top 62 cheeses and the only winner

from New Zealand. “We are currently undergoing Raw Cheese Validation to be able to make raw cheese to sell. We only have four cows and customers enjoy meeting them and knowing exactly where their cheese is coming from. Our cows are loved, respected and contented. The quality of their milk says it all.” Biddy says the New Zealand cheese industry is growing although there are a few problems with regulations that she believes need to be ironed out to see the small scale businesses succeed. “Small scale operations like ours have great resonance with discerning customers who care about what they eat, but we are hamstrung by unnecessarily restrictive regulations which are geared

to large operations like Fonterra and make it very difficult for low production operations like ours to survive. For instance for the raw cheese protocol, they make no distinction between the different cheese types. Some, like our hard cheese are intrinsically safe, and soft cheese carries a higher food safety risk — all are deemed high risk.” She says it is a great industry to be in however she would advise anyone getting into it to have a lot of money behind them before starting out. However despite all that Biddy and Colin are kept going by all the positive feedback they receive from their loyal customers and cheese fans.

hairman of the Masterton A&P show association Peter McWilliam says families these days have a huge range of choices regarding how they spend their time and local A&P shows around the country are suffering as a result of this. However Peter and his team of dedicated volunteers are aiming to reinvent the A&P show and attract a new generation of show-goers. “We are aiming to make it something really special because of the historic nature of the showgrounds and the long history of the rural and town communities coming together.

“We are going to bring back a few old memories of the old shows we have had in the past going right back to the late 1800s.” Peter is a farmer and pedigree cattle breeder himself and has been involved with the event for around 30 years since he moved to New Zealand from Scotland. “I was brought up in the North of Scotland. My forbears have been farming cattle since the early 1800s and my father had a famous shorthorn stud in Scotland.” When Peter came to New Zealand he continued to breed Simmental and Angus cattle. Six years ago Peter was BRED BY SEED GENETICS AUSTRALIA

elected onto the show’s board and took over the role of chairman earlier this year. He says the A&P show is a classic event where town and country come together. “It allows town people to get a taste of the country, not only as it is now but as it used to be. “We will be reliving the past. A lot of the old families that were involved with the show going back over the last century will be involved again. It will be a trip down memory lane. “We have a steam engine organised, a bullock team and some Clydesdales along with a lot of memorabilia, for example medals and trophies, that used to be awarded to winners.” At the same time as keeping in touch with their historic roots, the committee are dedicated to engaging with the younger generation by embracing new technology. “It is a real challenge but

I think through the use of social media and a few different mediums we can attract them to this event. “I think particularly for the young kids in towns it is important for them to know where things come from, and it is part of the job of the local A&P show to help educate them, to involve them in country life and give them a feel for the fundamentals of agriculture. We are working with the schools and local kids’ clubs to try to get them involved in the workings of the shows. “We won’t be dwelling on the past forever but it is just a means to remind everyone where we have been and using it as a launching pad for where we want to go, and try to appreciate what the younger generation want from institutions like ours.” The show will be held at Solway show grounds on February 17–19, 2017.

New red meat strategy

OctOber 2016

9

The story of New Zealand farming and its farmers will be at the heart of Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s new market development strategy targeting new and emerging markets. Beef and Lamb New Zealand chairman James Parsons says development of a red meat sector story which captures the culture, values and integrity that’s long been associated with New Zealand sheep and beef farmers, will be an angle they aim to exploit in differentiating this country from its competitors in the international marketplace. “The story, building on New Zealand’s farming systems with free-range, grassfed livestock — farmed to the highest standards of animal welfare — will be authenticated through a national quality assurance programme, developed through the Red Meat Profit Partnership. This programme harmonises existing meat company QA programmes,” says Mr Parsons. “The New Zealand red meat story and national assurance programme will support meat companies’ own individual marketing strategies and will be a valuable resource for other partners like meat importers, distributors, retailers and food service operators, and government agencies.”

A IN &

This marketing strategy marks a change in direction for BLNZ’s market development programme. The farmer-funded organisation has worked collaboratively with the red meat sector to develop a long-term sector strategy with clearly defined roles for BLNZ, meat exporters and marketers and industry stakeholders. “BLNZ will transition out of a market maintenance role in mature markets to focus on developing future growth opportunities, while meat companies will continue their efforts to maintain existing markets,” says Mr Parsons. Under the new direction BLNZ will be closing permanent offices in the United Kingdom, South Korea and Japan in favour of more flexible resources based in New Zealand. They will continue to have a base in China and the organisation will still maintain its own strong, international network and continue to work internationally with partner organisations including meat companies, Meat Industry Association, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. “This strategy does not affect the BLNZ office in Brussels where the focus on maintaining trade access arrangements and international relationships with our counterpart organisations in Europe is more important than ever. “Our established markets are still vitally important, however, responsibility for servicing and maintaining these markets will be managed primarily through our meat exporters using New Zealand red meat story collateral developed by BLNZ. The sector agreed that our exporters have deep commercial relationships developed over many years and are well placed to look after the market maintenance role. “We consulted widely over 12 months, running numerous focus groups and workshops and the result is quite a fundamental shift in approach, strongly supported by meat exporters and farmers. We are confident the new approach will drive greater impact for farmers on every levy dollar invested.

BATTERY ADDITIVE

ADVERTORIAL

Battery aid for top performance Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphate build-up on internal lead plates and, according to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitaliser and Conditioner, this crust is very easy to treat. “We have been saying for years that farmers are getting eight to 10 years in our battery conditioning program. However, most shows we do these days we meet people using our program with 12 and 14 year-old batteries often still going.” “In fact our record battery life is 18 years old and still starting a tractor and after 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia I think we may do better yet.” The recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulphate build-up. Once treated a battery is is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition. Prevention is the key — treat them early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged.” Recharge is available at Farmlands or Gerard and Debbie will be at Christchurch A and P show again this year on site TP-20 and also the Camper Care Caravan show in Hardcastle Arena the week prior. The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery or $8.50 to treat an N-70. A more cost

Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, top up with water, treat, charge and reseal with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.

AVAILABLE AT:

0800 36 33 36 – www.recharge.net.nz

effective two litre commercial pack is also available and that pack can also be purchased on line at www.recharge. net.nz or on TradeMe. As recharge is acid based it is classed as dangerous goods and expensive to freight.

MERGE LIKE A ZIP

You can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell and re-sealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like forkifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.

Working on agriculture emissions Federated Farmers supports the PCE’s call for a better approach to understanding the ways to control and reduce agricultural greenhouse gases. “We’ve always said the ETS is only one way to work on this issue and we’ve always insisted agricultural emissions should be measured and monitored from the farm level, not from processors. It’s good to see the commissioner coming around to this way of thinking,” said Federated Farmers spokesperson on climate change Anders Crofoot. Federated Farmers sees the report as a useful contribution to the ongoing discussion New Zealand needs to have about finding ways to reduce agricultural emissions. As the report points out, total emissions from agriculture in the last 25 years have increased by 15 per cent, while at the same time emissions from road transport increased by 71 per cent and industrial processing by 45 per cent. “To achieve the massive change required to reduce agricultural emissions, we are going to have to work together as a nation and we are going to have to look for solutions based on new technologies, smart science and good research,” said Mr Crofoot. The report also notes agriculture has made major gains in controlling emissions while still increasing

productivity, stating that emissions would be 40 per cent higher than they are now if gains had not been made through improvements like breeding more efficient animals and improving farm management. Federated Farmers does not support the inclusion of agricultural emissions in the ETS, because it would put New Zealand producers at a severe competitive disadvantage on international markets. “We did support New Zealand’s signing of the Paris Agreement, because this country needs to be at the forefront of finding solutions to this issue,” said Mr Crofoot. “We don’t think the ETS is the appropriate tool for farming, but we will consider being involved in something else that makes more sense for farming. “We are dealing with about 30,000 farms which are very different, with very different environmental impacts. As the report itself says, we could be looking at huge variations in emissions even between neighbouring farms. “New Zealand farmers are totally committed to leaving their land in as good, if not better, condition than they found it.”

Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. She has been able to significantly reduce pain medication and has greater mobility. As a bonus her energy has improved and feels much better in herself. Last week I carried out a monthly review with another client in her mid80s who had arthritis in her shoulder and hands.

She commented on how much better these were. Nutritional therapy can have unexpected improvements. This client also had a long-term problem with very dry skin. While it has taken time to improve, here we have an 85-year-old whose joints and skin have improved significantly. Many people respond to health problems by purchasing supplements at the supermarket, health store or that advertise on TV. There is nothing wrong with that but in my experience the best results come from using a full nutritional programme covering diet, supplements and appropriate lifestyle changes. These are the steps that can really make a difference. Give me a call or email if you need more information. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Sustainable deer farming All five major venison marketing companies and the NZ Deer Farmers Association are backing the introduction of a revamped quality assurance programme for farmed deer. The companies have agreed on a single standard for deer that will eliminate duplication between companies running their own QA programmes. They have also agreed that, after a three-year phase-in period, compliance with the QA standard will be a requirement for the supply of animals for Cervena venison. The development of the single standard was initiated by the marketers and coordinated by Deer Industry NZ as part of the industry’s Passion2Profit programme. For farmers who produce beef, lamb or goat meat, as well as venison, the deer standard is included in the NZ Farm Assurance Programme, which has been developed by the Red Meat Profit Partnership. “This means all species will be covered by a single baseline standard and the same audit process, further reducing paperwork for farmers,” said DINZ quality manager John Tacon. “Venison marketing companies will deliver the standard to their farmer suppliers, with the timing determined by their customer requirements.” Both P2P and RMPP are Primary Growth

Partnership programmes between the Ministry for Primary Industries and, respectively, the deer and red meat industries. NZDFA chair David Morgan supports the single standard. He says it will help streamline paperwork for those farmers already involved in QA schemes for two or more processors. “I think any farmers trying QA for the first time will be surprised how easy it is to do and how useful it is. Most farmers will find they are already doing all the things they should, but without the standard and audit you can’t prove this to a third party. “A QA audit is a great way to check that you and your staff are complying with all the rules and regulations we have to deal with these days. Honest mistakes with things like registers of animal remedies can be extremely expensive. The QA scheme makes it less likely that you will make them.” While the on-farm benefits of QA are real, the ultimate driver for on-farm QA comes from the marketplace. Venison exporter and DINZ deputy chair Glenn Tyrrell says most NZ deer farmers take great pride in producing a quality

The introduction of a revamped quality assurance programme for farmed deer has been welcomed

product and take animal welfare very seriously. “This is not necessarily the case in other parts of the world. There have been a number of high profile incidents that have upset consumers,” said Mr Tyrrell. “Important international customers — food service distributors and supermarket buyers — are increasingly

demanding proof that all the food products they buy meet their expectations for ethical farming and quality standards. New Zealand’s good reputation is a big plus, but they still want a paper trail and an audit report. “I strongly encourage deer farmers to talk to their marketing company or deer agent about what it has to offer them.”

The mystery of pipelines Pipelines are those expensive things you have to have to convey water or other fluids (or gases) and best bought at cheapest possible price — correct? Wrong! If you consider it, they are often difficult to alter if the system is incorrect. All liquids and gases moving along a containment vessel have pressure loss due to friction from the walls and turbulence from various changes in the shape or direction of the vessel. Temperature of the liquid also has a bearing, but let’s keep it to the most basic issue of pressure loss. Also some things which can be done to cut down on the turbulence including long radius bends instead of tight bends, welded fittings in place of threaded sockets, etc. One of the biggest mysteries for amateurs is the relationship between pipe sizes and friction loss/flow rate. In a nutshell, the friction loss multiplies as the pipe size reduces — they are not proportional! Often a bargain price for next-size-smaller pipe has a major negative impact on the efficiency of the system. As a scenario: Consider a small block irrigation scheme of 4ha. The well and shared pump are 200m into neighbouring property and the most distant hydrant on the block is a further 300m, making

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

maximum delivery length of 500m. The flow required is 300L/min. At this point it doesn’t matter what type of irrigator is used, seeing as we’re only considering the pressure loss in the main pipeline. Sizes discussed will all be internal to avoid confusion between PVC, LDPE and MDOD pipe options (never mind aluminium). If 3" pipe were used the friction/ pressure loss could be 9psi for the full distance, if 2½" used could be 22psi loss, 2¼" could be 50psi loss, and good ole 2" alkathene could be 87psi loss! This is without the pressure required to run the irrigator or allowing for rising ground, etc. If 2" alkathene were selected for this job then the pump would quite possibly need to be 7.5hp larger than if 3" pipe were used. Rather a sober consideration for a small system and a great energy waste which could easily be avoided. Next time — The mystery of pumps! If you wish to have further discussion regarding this article you can contact Clem Powell on 027 599 9273.
