The Federation believes there is room of opportunism for its members, wider primary sector, and all New Zealanders. “We congratulate new Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the coalition partners on finding a consensus to lead the country,” says Katie Milne, Federated Farmers national president. Katie says it was time to cast aside the division which fuelled the election campaign and remember that the country’s future prosperity and economic health depended on all New Zealanders sharing a common ground. “Whether you are a townie or cocky, when it comes down to it we all have the same hopes and aspirations for our families and communities. Let’s give the new government a chance and let’s hope they can make decisions based on unity and mutual trust. ®

New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights.

Every farmer needs an edge when it comes to pasture burndown and resistance management. And Sharpen® really delivers. Mixed with glyphosate, Sharpen® is the only herbicide in New Zealand powered by Kixor®, a unique active ingredient specially created to increase broad-spectrum control of previously hard-to-control broadleaf weeds. Now with a label extension, Sharpen® delivers outstanding burndown results and an incredibly fast 2 day withholding period for grazing. It’s good news for maize growers too. Used with acetochler, Sharpen® works for pre-emergent weed control in maize.

Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials.

Visit agro.basf.co.nz for more details or visit your local distributor.

Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

“Federated Farmers is looking forward to getting around the table and talking about the issues which affect our members and farmers. The primary sector is the backbone of the New Zealand economy so we anticipate the new government will be mindful of that when formulating policy.” The Federation was willing to share its industry influence, expertise and insight with the new government and is encouraging members and farmers to look ahead with a positive outlook. “There’s undoubtedly challenges ahead for those tasked with governing the country. “One thing the new government can be sure of — Federated Farmers is ready to play its part as a primary sector leader and voice of New Zealand farming,” says Katie.

Looking forward to progress

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

The Forest Owners Association are looking forward to working with the new Minister of Forests Shane Jones to meet what forest owners call a huge challenge to double the annual forest planting rate. “The new government’s target of an additional 50,000 hectares of planting a year is ‘optimistic but achievable’,” says Forest Owners Association president Peter Clark. “For most of the 1990s, the new planting rate was more than 50,000 hectares a year. In 1994 it was 100,000 hectares beyond keeping up with replanting. “We have been talking with Shane Jones about what can and can’t be achieved and he is in no doubt about some of the difficulties of getting more plantings going after more than a decade of no growth. “In particular we do need to build the labour force to do the planting. At the moment we are struggling to plant enough trees to maintain the present area. We hope that Shane Jones being Minister of Regional Development will help in that respect.” Mr Clark says the idea of a separate Forest Service sounds like a good idea. “We don’t know what functions it will have so we have to wait for that, but with forestry under the Ministry of Primary Industries we were not getting the attention an industry should get when it earns six billion dollars a year in exports. The forest sector won’t be completely disconnected from MPI

though. As well as agriculture, Damien O’Connor has a biosecurity portfolio, and that is a huge priority right across the primary sector. “There are a number of pests and diseases which we don’t have, but which would have a huge impact right across agriculture and forestry if they ever got into New Zealand.” He says James Shaw taking on the role of the Minister of Climate Change is significant. “As Green Party leader, his influence will keep the government focus on doing something practical about climate change. The only practical solution is planting more trees. That’s the only currently available technology to significantly pull down our level of carbon emissions.” Mr Clark believes the just announced partial introduction of agriculture into the Emissions Trading Scheme will also give a boost to forest planting on farms. “The initial major planting will be on Crown and Maori land, but if the government gives farmers an option of growing trees to absorb carbon and offset the greenhouse gas emissions from their stock, then I am sure we will see farmers planting out woodlots with a view to getting a return on eventually harvesting those trees.”

Whilst visiting organic farms around New Zealand some years ago, Jill Bradley and Keith Atwood discovered the importance of organically grown fruit and veges and started their family business AgriSea, producing seaweed products for the home gardener. by Ann Morgan

ver time a range of skincare products was created under the business Ocean Organics in 1996 as a way for Jill to have a natural hand cream made from a wide variety of New Zealand herbs. Other products have also been made available to help with skin. “Our skincare products are created from an array of high quality hand picked and hand pressed New Zealand native wild herbs, and the results are incredible,” says Jill. “They are WE STOCK A WIDE RANGE OF

produced in small batches and are made totally by hand — from the picking to the mixing and packaging. “I often gardened without gloves and my hands had little infections from rose thorns and things so I needed a cream that was moisturising and healing. We set about visiting many medical herbalists to find someone we could work with on our project.” It took well over a year to find someone the couple would work with. Jill and Keith had two questions for each person they met with. How long have you been a medical herbalist and would you be prepared to sit with Maori experts to work with herbs of our own country?

“We all hear about Chinese herbs and the European knowledge of herbs but it was the knowledge of New Zealand medicinal herbs that we wanted to integrate. Our herbs come from a perfect bush environment — grown in beautiful quality soil. “We found a lady that has worked with herbs all her life and she said she would be honoured to sit with Maori herbal experts to learn from.” Jill and Keith then decided their Agrisea gardeners might appreciate the hand cream as it is not filled with chemicals and is moisturising and healing. The family then created a healing salve that has also become very popular. “It is really outstanding and a lot of people with eczema use it — it was like magic. In the early days I cleared a big bank of cleavers, and my forearms were absolutely on fire when I came in. I said to Keith I made a mistake and should have worn sleeves and gloves, so I used the salve on one arm as a test and it was an instant relief. “It has a mixture of herbs such as manuka, flax root, seaweed, rescue remedy and lavender. “It is one of those balms that is good for anything and clients have said it is magic for hemorrhoids as well. A friend who had bowel cancer used it out of desperation after chemotherapy and said it was like magic and helped her get relief where nothing else had worked.” Five years later Jill’s daughter asked her to create a face cream. “The rose and almond face cream was the very last product we made and is for our gardeners and Agrisea farmers’ wives — the men use it too. It is a truly nourishing face cream and is great if

you are out in the elements. It has no chemicals in it, just herbs. “Agrisea is the family’s main business and Ocean Organics is the sideline company that is just as important, and we plan it to always be here for our customers. We refuse to have the products mass produced — I think you would lose something. Keeping it made in small batches regularly is the best thing. Even the base cream took us ages to find as it needed to be special. We found a Chinese chemist and medical herbalist and he makes it especially for us. “Having created these products is amazing, there are little stories all the time. Our grandchild uses it for eczema — a man came because the salve is the only thing that helps

his skin condition that he has had for many years. Someone’s horse had an ulcer and the salve healed it. It sounds like a miracle but it really is that we have a phenomenal array of truly healing herbs, put together by a woman who knows her stuff. “There is always three per cent in the world things don’t work for but for the majority it helps. It is our go to balm. “Even our Agri Sea products are handmade with wooden paddles by people — not machines. We believe if you are going to sell something to people it is very important to sell something of high value.”

The miniature BY ANN MORGAN Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven is a rescue and rehabilitation centre run by Jennifer and Lindsay Heperi for mini horses from across New Zealand, specialising in rehabilitating laminitis and grass-affected miniature horses.

“W

e care for minis, Shetlands and small ponies. We have two donkeys at present amongst our family of 21 fur kids,” says Jen. “We came about creating The Haven after being asked to help some wee minis that needed care. The owners didn’t realise that they are different to big horses and we learnt about laminitis when we took in a rescue mare with a one-day-old foal and it was a big learning curve. Jenny Patterson from Calm Healthy Horses is Jen’s mentor. “Jenny has taught me so much and supports us with her amazing nutritional products. We also have regular volunteers including a home schooling family, and a photographer. Five years down the track we have a special

feeding programme. Some horses arrive and can hardly walk. Laminitis is like walking on crushed glass. “Laminitis has become a big problem across the country especially with fast growing rye and clover grass. These are high in potassium and sugars and so are muesli and commercial feeds. Many owners don’t add salt and this can contribute to a laminitis attack when lush green grass is added into the mix. This can make a horse become grass affected.” Jen says minis are often labelled little brats and are known for behavior problems due to being treated like large dogs. “This gives a completely wrong impression of how awesome they are. If you don’t understand about potassium and sugars in the grasses, and metabolic syndrome, you are quietly killing them.”

IMS Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven have rehabilitated more than 30 horses with laminitis in three years “We have people nationwide rescuing horses from vulnerable situations. We are known in United States, United Kingdom and Australia with others wanting help. I work full time and we couldn’t achieve what we do without our amazing supporters. “Our volunteer photographer Tracey Agnew comes and puts every animal’s photograph on our facebook page every Sunday night so people can see how their horse is doing. “Mini horses should always be in pairs, not company for a big horse. They need the dentist to file their teeth because they keep growing and the animal cannot eat. Feet need to be trimmed regularly and they need good quality hay.

Horses get Equine Metabolic Syndrome if they are fed mostly grass. Warning signs include a big thick hard cresty neck and fat lump pads on their body. “Signs of a grass affected horse include twitching and not standing nicely when you put the bridle and gear on.” The couple built three ‘paradise tracks’, special yards with untreated post peelings so the animals walk on a soft surface, carpeted shelter huts, and they have macrocarpas to get shade. “We have rehabilitated more than 30 laminitics in three years. They get their feet soaked in epsom salts and are given magnetic pulse blanket treatments. The nutritional programme involves adding salt, Grazezy, S.O.S and Premium Minerals, and hay is soaked and has no clover or rye in it. “They start on the painkiller Bute, and then are weaned onto a natural pain remedy made specially by Jill Shires and it takes two to four days to see a slight improvement followed by more improvement each day. Chronically affected horses take up to five weeks to become comfortable. At two weeks a horse may lightly trot and by week four they can canter again. “We build up their trust and they have the run of seven acres and come and go as they please. “Rescuing and retraining is easy. Rehoming is difficult. We are extremely protective and ensure those we do let foster know exactly how to care for them. We recently became a charitable trust after five years of funding ourselves with help from many kind folk sponsoring us. Now we can apply for other sponsorship and grants.” The cost to care for one horse is more than $2,500 per year, or $20-25 a week to keep a mini in the lifestyle they deserve.

“We love giving horses that are in so much pain their life back. The biggest reward is seeing them run around the tracks, playing, galloping and chasing. I often cry because we saw them start out crippled. We don’t know what goes on behind the hidden hedges, but quality hay warms their bellies and good shelter keeps them out of the wind and rain. “They are what they eat so therefore they are what we feed them.” Check out ‘Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven’ on Facebook.

FREE RANGE IN

Wairarapa by Ann Morgan

Masterton farmer Chris Martin and his wife Sunny are the region’s largest free range egg farmers and they know a good egg when they see one.

“I

used to be the head baker at the award-winning Ten o’clock Cookie café, and the time came when I needed a change and had a yearning for a new challenge,” says Chris. “Sunny’s parents wanted to sell their farm so we purchased it from them and have our free range chickens. We chose free range because it fits with my worldview. I like seeing the birds living outside and we are serving a need and providing an option for people.” Chris says an egg is an egg — the difference between which people choose is personal.

“The yolk is brighter when they live outside because of a certain substance in the grass. We also put this in their feed and it helps bump up the colour. “Free range eggs can fluctuate in quality because they are tested by a lot more things outside than what a barn bird would be because they get a lot of food choices. “It is a challenging type of farming and not as easy as cage farming where you get 100 per cent of your eggs. If the chickens are comfy outside they will lay where they want, so we try to train them that ‘the barn is your home, go outside and play

and come inside and lay your egg’.” Nest boxes provide security for the hens and trees are planted rather than bushes around the property to provide shade and protection. “They will lay under a bush if they can and that doesn’t help us find them. Trees provide security as the birds don’t like to be in bright open spaces. Chickens are interesting habitual creatures. If I could GPS tag one I am sure they would follow the same route daily — — the same nest box and same feeders.” Chris says to keep your eggs fresh, never put them in the door of the fridge, — the temperature changes at every opening. Keep them in the back of the fridge, in the carton and take the amount you need out in the fridge. “Always boil the older egg as the shell peels off easier and use fresh eggs for poaching as they are firmer.” Chris has an interest in governance and was elected to the New Zealand Egg Producers Federation board as the New Zealand free range representative and is also the chairman of Eggs Incorporated — the marketing arm of the industry. “Having young people in these positions helps to future proof the industry, there is a lot of experience around the table and I can include my business experience and expertise and still function as a farmer,” he says. “It is great being the free range representative on the board so the interest of the free range farmer isn’t disregarded in policy making — small farmers need to be protected and heard. The majority of flock sizes are around

5-10,000 birds whereas barn and cage operations are 50-100,000. “I find networking is done a lot with dairy farmers and they have discussion groups and share their information amongst each other. I would like that to happen more in the egg industry so we can produce eggs more efficiently and professionally and not be so competitive that we don’t share our information. Given the competitive nature of the industry, as we are all trying to sell our eggs, this may be unachievable, but I would love to see it in some format within the industry.” “It is important to know free range farming fluctuates with the season and chickens have nothing better to do than eat grass all day. At different times of the year farms look different. Lush green grass all year round isn’t going to happen. You need to be realistic that this isn’t bad, it is all part of free range farming and the chicken is still happy.” The free range hens at Wairarapa Eggs have access to the outdoors 24 hours a day. “They are well fed with quality antibiotic and GE free grain and they have plenty of fresh water all day. They can forage for tasty morsels outside on the property whenever they want and we have purchased more land and are building another chicken farm to increase the flock size to around 24,000 birds. I’m too young to stop now. I want to take the business further and starting a purpose-built free range farm ticks a lot of boxes for me. It is the happy hen that will lay an egg.”

The chickens have the freedom to roam outside whenever they like and forage for their food

Now the owner and manager of scaffolding and access company Billda ACCESS Ltd, (www.billdaaccess.co.nz) has seen compliance and building costs skyrocket, along with a desire to keep builders and other tradies safer than ever before. Technology too has played a part, with laser precision and modern building materials transforming the building scene. Keeping up-to-date is part of Bill’s mantra, so when new regulations required serious monitoring and fall mitigation measures, Bill looked into the leading edge of access solutions and found a lightweight, reliable, aluminium answer. Quick and efficient to go up, the Billda ACCESS Intaks solution comprises roof edge protection, full and half working platform solutions, and fall protection netting. It’s not a fly-by-night import solution either — it’s fully compliant with all New Zealand and Australian safety standards. Bill works with a range of developers and homeowners to provide an award-winning, cost effective and complete solution for modern residential and commercial building projects. Whether it’s a new build, a rebuild, or a renovation — there’s a simple, quick, and reconfigurable set up that he can recommend. The system won the Safeguard New

Illegal seafood sales

OctOber 2017

A significant increase in the number of illegal seafood sales via Facebook has prompted the Ministry for Primary Industries to warn those offending that they will face penalties for violating the Fisheries Act. Since the beginning of the year, MPI has received more than 160 calls and emails reporting Facebook posts by people selling recreationally caught seafood including crayfish, kina and paua. These figures are up on the previous year where 96 complaints were received and the year before when 57 complaints were registered. “Both buying and selling recreationally caught seafood, as well as swapping it, is against the law. These are offences against the Fisheries Act and can result in fines of up to $250,000,” says MPI Fisheries Compliance manager Greg Keys. “It is likely that most people who are posting about seafood for sale know that their actions are illegal. This is simply another vehicle that people use to illegally sell recreational catch. That figure does not include multiple complaints about the same post so, in reality, the number of complaints is significantly higher than that.” Mr Keys says MPI expects to see an increase in illegal activity of this nature as the warmer weather sets in. He says MPI follows up on every incident that is reported. “The rules are in place to ensure the sustainability of our fisheries as well as to ensure seafood meets food safety standards. “For example, we were recently altered to the illegal sale of kina on Facebook where the kina in question was actually from an area under a shellfish biotoxin alert. “It is always disappointing to see people flouting the rules. What is great, however, is an increase in the number of people who approach us via our various channels to report suspicious or illegal behaviour.” Ensuring and promoting sustainable fisheries is a collective

responsibility and MPI encourage people to report poaching or illegal activity by calling 0800 4 POACHER (0800 47 62 24), email: poacher@mpi.govt.nz or use the main Facebook site: www.facebook. com/MPIgovtnz Useful information includes: The location, vehicle/trailer registration number, boat name, description of the person and screenshots of the listing. All correspondence is treated as confidential.

Conference will mark 20 years Dairy Women’s Network’s upcoming conference will celebrate the primary reason the Network was established in 1998 — to develop and educate women to add value to the business of dairy and bring women in the dairy industry together.

Made by hand with love... naturally. We are a small home based family business specialising in making hand made, natural products. Our soaps, lotions, balms, creams and candles are made from the very best ingredients nature has to offer. Our aim is to make your life more beautiful, every day.

Registrations are now open for DWN18 — ‘Our Land, Our People’ which takes place March 22-23 at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua, and anyone working in the dairy industry is being encouraged to attend — women, men, rural professionals, all farm workers, and organisations that support the industry. “The conference will focus on the two key elements at the heart of the dairy industry, land and people, and celebrate the Network’s grass roots community and ability to bring people together,” says DWN ceo Zelda de Villiers. “It is very clear to us why our members are drawn to farming — they are proud to be part of a close-knit, supportive community, it is a great lifestyle for their families, and they enjoy working in the outdoors and with animals.”

The conference will host three motivational speakers, including TEDx speaker Cam Calkoen, more than 30 exhibition stands, and nine practical workshops covering topics including finance, animal health, sustainability, and wellness. “Next year’s delegates will walk away having built knowledge and gained new skills, and feel inspired and motivated for the year ahead,” says Jodie Goudswaard conference committee chair. “We want to continue to offer workshops that are relevant and timely to what is happening in the industry. We have put more of a practical spin on this conference because we want everyone to come away with solutions and plans to put in place once they get home, and we are offering more workshops and learning options than we have before.” A new addition to the programme is the pre-conference farm tour, where attendees can visit farms in the area to see new farming technology in action. Founding general manager Lynda Clark has seen her fair share of conferences and says over the years they have evolved to meet the changing needs of DWN’s members. “Technical workshops addressing the key areas women are involved in on-farm, and ones focussed on management and leadership are all topics which continue to be of interest to women in the dairy industry. “Now, we are also seeing full rooms for workshops in health and safety, sustainability, and ones that cover

education on complex environmental issues such as nitrogen leaching. We have always had to be innovative and a step ahead in our offerings for our members.” The Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year and the Dairy Community Leadership awards will also be announced during the conference at a gala dinner on March 22. Preparing for the pollen season For those people who experience hay fever symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy or watery eyes or sneezing, it is important to keep your home healthy by cutting down on allergens. Pollen season typically strikes during spring and summer, with pollen levels tending to be higher on warm dry days. “Limiting your exposure to pollen, particularly in your home, can really help,” says Letitia O’Dwyer, chief executive of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ. “The majority of people affected by seasonal hay fever are allergic to dust mites, pollen or moulds and we have developed some spring cleaning tips to help you prepare your home.” Follow these tips so that your family can breathe easier this allergy season: Wash sheets, pillowcases, soft toys in the bedroom weekly in water hotter than 55°C. Cover mattresses, quilts and pillows with dust mite-resistant encasings. Open curtains and air bedding in the sunshine and give them a regular clean.

Consider venetian blinds or flat blinds which are easier to clean than heavy curtains. Use a damp or electrostatic cloth to dust hard surfaces (including floors). Ask someone else to do the vacuuming, as this increases allergen in the air for up to 20 minutes, or consider using a vacuum cleaner with an asthma and allergy sensitive HEPA filter. Keep rooms dry and well ventilated and clear out the clutter. “Another way to manage hay fever and/or allergy symptoms is to use products that may reduce allergy triggers in day-to-day life,” says Ms O’Dwyer. “The ‘Sensitive Choice’ programme was created to help consumers identify asthma and allergy aware products. “Sensitive Choice approved products have been assessed by an independent panel. Next time you are out shopping,

look for the reassuring blue butterfly on product packaging, including bedding, cleaning products, vacuum cleaners, and more. “Sensitive Choice has helped New Zealanders reduce their allergy reactions for many years. Its partners provide funds for research and education led by the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ to reduce the health, social and economic impacts of asthma and allergies in New Zealand.” If you are one of the thousands of New Zealanders with asthma or allergy symptoms, visit the Sensitive Choice website — sensitivechoice.co.nz for products and services that may be a better choice for you and your family. All Sensitive Choice approved products are listed on the website, sorted by category or allergy triggers including indoor climate control, cleaning products, furniture and bedding, flooring, building and renovating, health and personal care, vacuum and deep cleaners, and pool and spa care.

Letitia O’Dwyer, chief executive of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ

“Speak to their doctor or pharmacist, take prescribed medications and create an allergy free home environment to help keep spring and summer allergies well managed,” says Ms O’Dwyer.

ADVERTORIAL

Improving joints

(Part 2) A recent client had been affected by osteoarthritis in his hips and shoulders. We created a personalised joint health programme that included supplements that can help promote healing in arthritic joints. After speaking with him today he said that he is mostly symptom free. The real hero however is not so much the dietary changes and supplements but his body’s own healing processes. All disease starts with changes to cell functions. If this is left unchecked it can lead to tissue damage and eventually to disease. Our bodies have incredible healing properties that can become overwhelmed by a disease process. While physical damage to joints can cause arthritis it is important to see it as a real disease and not just wear and tear. Joint cartilage appears as tough lifeless tissue. A closer look reveals something quite different. Cartilage matrix is secreted by specialised living cells called chondrocytes. These cells maintain small pieces of cartilage. Anything that negatively affects chondrocytes will eventually damage cartilage. Lose enough cartilage and you have osteoarthritis. Chondrocytes can become damaged

by several processes. Firstly free radicals can damage them to the point that they cannot function properly. If left unprotected by antioxidants the chondrocytes will die and the piece of cartilage it maintained will eventually be lost. Secondly, corrosive enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s) attack the collagen matrix of cartilage, and thirdly unwanted inflammation can damage chondrocytes. What we need to do is to protect chondrocytes, reduce inflammation, reduce free radical activity and reduce MMP activity. What this does is to allow our natural cartilage healing processes to spring to life. The result is less pain and improved mobility. The answer is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant dense diet. We then add anti-inflammatory supplements that can help restore joint healing processes. Please contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula What is Bettaflex? • Bettaflex is a joint support formula to promote healthy joint cartilage function. • Bettaflex combines high grade chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine sulphate and a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. • Each capsule of Bettaflex contains 382mg of high grade chondroitin, 425mg of glucosamine and 50mg of curcumin extract.

How can Bettaflex help?

BEST BUY! $79.95 for 3 bottles free freight or 1 bottle for $28.95 plus $4.99 postage.

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments: “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.”

The mystery of gravity driven pumps Everyone wants something for nothing and pumps working from their own water supply are often a great way of getting water delivered to higher levels. The concept has been around since invention in late 1700s.

Often referred to as ram pumps from their predecessors, Glockemann 320 Pumps are in fact gravity driven pumps. Without getting too technical, water rams are powered by the water hammer effect of the ports opening and closing whereas Glockemann 320 are operated by high volume/ low pressure water on a large diaphragm working a smaller piston and cylinder to give the lift pressure required. At end of stroke a valve opens and components return ready for next cycle. Water for the pressure side can come from either submersion of the inlet port, suction hose off the inlet port or dry mounting the pump where the water is tapped from the drive tube. This is common in Australia and other places where remoteness of installation and flash flooding are a risk.

Another difference between ram pumps and gravity driven pumps is that ram pumps need more velocity/ high drop as this is best for producing the water hammer to power them. Gravity driven need much less velocity and drop, usually between 0.6m and 1.8m, giving lift to 150m–200m vertical, although the spec charts do show delivery to 20m from 0.3m drop. This large power to lift ratio is not usually available from a ram pump. Glockemann 320 pumps are a robust cast iron construction and have proven to give years of reliable service before overhaul, which is an inexpensive and simple task if you are a do-ityourself person. Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Is this a confession?

be 5.8 to 6.0. A scientific table showing the availability of nutrients at differing pH levels illustrate that phosphate is twice as available at pH 6.3 compared to the availability of phosphate at 5.8pH. This is real scientific evidence that farmers have been taken for a ride. So to increase your current phosphate levels just move your pH from 5.8 to 6.3. Your soil phosphates will actually increase without applying any phosphate. There are two points to this picture I have painted. 1. Superphosphate, DAP and urea are all water soluble. If these products are applied in excess where do you think they will end up? 2. To stop the cause of the pollution, not only will these water soluble products need to be stopped but the NPK trained specialists will need reprogramming. To change the direction of such an entrenched system won’t be easy for these chemical NPK companies or the farmers who follow them. For real science with integrity which will save money and grow more grass, ring me. David Law, Forward Farming, 027 490 9896.

At last there is a change on the horizon. One of our major fertiliser companies has stepped up to the plate to offer a helping hand to save our rivers and streams from future pollution. Of course this would be like putting the handbrake on a fully laden logging truck on a downward slope. With the unquestionable evidence that these NPK fertiliser companies are largely to blame for this mess, they are running out of road. To keep their foot on the accelerator is not a viable alternative. I applaud the CEO for joining the team. Although there is an utterance from this committed team to stop the pollution, the answers of how to do it will need to be found. The current science is failing the environmental futures test and the two large NPK fertiliser companies who are applying this outdated science are failing the majority of the farmers of New Zealand. Although farmers are the focus of the attacks from environmentalists on water pollution, the fault lies with the two large NPK fertiliser companies who provide a specialist service and sell the fertiliser to 95% of our farmers who are following their advice. Because soil fertility is so specialised these companies have been getting away with focussing on sales rather than honest advice and honest science. Evidence of this is the propaganda

which has led to the acceptance that superphosphate and urea grow grass. This is so entrenched in farmers’ minds that a lot of fertiliser applied is carried on the back of superphosphate. If you need K and S a likely brew could be potassic sulphur super. If you needed Mg a likely product would be surpentine super or if your budget is tight Super 10 would do the job. A modern change lately is the use of DAP which is a brilliant product to deliver soluble phosphate which is particularly efficient for cropping. Research has proven that it will not lift phosphate reserves in the soil unless applied in heavy applications. Where soil phosphate levels are already adequate, (30+ Olsen P), to use super phosphate as a carrier is wasting farmers’ money and only helping fertiliser companies increase their sales and profits, and the excess is polluting our rivers and streams. A soil nutrient which is being used up with every tanker load of milk leaving the farm is calcium. Research has shown that an average dairy farm would need 300kg of lime per hectare per year to keep up with what is leaving the farm as milk. Lime would therefore be a much more cost effective carrier for elements which are essential like potassium, magnesium, sulphur and trace elements. Another fallacy is the acceptance that pH should

Innovation Awards success Two Primary Growth Partnership programmes have taken out Innovation Awards at the New Zealand Innovation Awards. The SPATnz Primar y Growth Partnership programme won the Innovation in Agribusiness and Environment category whilst the Omega Lamb Project took out the Innovation Award in the Innovation in Food and Beverage category. The Omega Lamb Project was also Highly Commended in the Innovation Excellence in Research category. “The wins are testament to the substantial investment in innovation by the programme partners,” says Justine Gilliland, Ministry for Primary Industries director Investment Programmes. “The Innovation Awards are fitting recognition of the significant amount of time, expertise, effort and money invested into SPATnz and The Omega Lamb Project to date. “We are very proud of SPATnz’s and The Omega Lamb Project’s achievements and excited at what they will mean for our seafood and red meat industries in the future. “These programmes are developing value-added products for consumers, delivering returns for our seafood and red meat industries, helping to lift environmental knowledge, practices and tools, and could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars to New Zealand’s economy.”

SPATnz, a collaboration between MPI and Sanford, is tackling the ageold challenge of a reliance on growing Greenshell mussels from wild mussel spat washed up on 90 Mile Beach or caught on lines in Golden Bay. “SPATnz is well on the way to breeding Greenshell mussels in captivity at commercial scale with the characteristics demanded by consumers, as well as providing a consistent supply of spat. This will literally transform our Greenshell mussel industry,” says Ms Gilliland. The Omega Lamb Project is a collaboration between MPI, food company Alliance Group and a group of innovative farmers known as Headwaters. It is targeting premium markets with a new type of lamb with higher levels of polyunsaturated (good) fats and Omega-3 fatty acids. “The Omega Lamb Project is taking a new approach to naturally breeding, raising, processing and marketing premium New Zealand lamb. It is producing healthier, more resilient sheep, along with healthy, tasty, and succulent meat.” The first product from the programme, TE MANA LAMB, was launched in New Zealand and Hong Kong premium restaurants this year. product is high, and it is receiving glowing reviews from leading chefs and food critics. “As these wins at the Innovation Awards show, SPATnz and The Omega Lamb Project are adding significant value to our primary industries, and pushing the envelope of what’s possible. This is at the heart of the Primary Growth Partnership.” The Primary Growth Partnership is MPI’s flagship investment programme. It

invests in large innovation programmes that progress opportunities or tackle challenges facing New Zealand’s primary industries. It currently involves around $759 million of committed investment and more than 60 companies. PGP programmes are independently estimated to add $6.4 billion to New Zealand’s GDP from 2025. New meat plant for Countdown Partnering with global meat processing experts, Hilton Food Group, Countdown is setting up a brand new, state of the art, meat processing plant in Otahuhu, Auckland. The plant will open in 2020, and will replace Countdown’s existing meat processing facility next door, providing long-term job security and employment for the company’s 300 meat plant team members. Hilton Food Group was established in England in 1994 and are international specialists in meat manufacturing, partnering with major food retailers around the world. Hilton are planning to invest $54 million to set up a bespoke meat plant, which will supply Countdown exclusively. “Last year Countdown sourced 100 per cent of its chicken, pork and lamb from local New Zealand farmers and 97 per cent of its beef. The partnership with Hilton will future-proof the company’s meat business so it can continue to match the future demands of Kiwi customers,” says Countdown managing director Dave Chambers. “We put our customers first. This partnership will enable us to best respond to increasing customer demand for more innovation and new product development, and continue our commitment to provide high quality, locally sourced meat at affordable prices for New Zealand families.

“We have a history of innovation with initiatives like our recycled meat trays, and this partnership puts Countdown at the forefront of the meat industry by harnessing the latest technology in meat processing. “The new plant increases our capacity, particularly to meet seasonal demands like Christmas. It will also mean more flexibility in packaging and options around portion sizes which is important when you have a diverse range of customers whose needs are always changing. “Importantly this is an investment in the long-term future of meat processing in Otahuhu. Meat processing in this area is part of Auckland’s history; we have a large local team and maintaining that employment and connection to the community is really important to us.” Robert Watson OBE, chief executive of Hilton Food Group says: “We are very pleased to be partnering with Countdown and expanding our packing capability to New Zealand. “The new facility will be capable of supplying Countdown stores with a range of high quality New Zealand beef, lamb, pork, chicken and added-value products.” Countdown has been the Supreme Brand

LIVESTOCK ADVERTORIAL

Smarter culvert calculations Farmers could benefit from fewer culvert blowouts and better paddock performance thanks to a new online tool that P&F Global have developed an online, an easy to use culvert pipe calculator — the EUROFLO Culvert Calculator. Global sales manager Joseph McLean said the new online calculator would transform the way people work out their culvert pipe requirements, allowing them to quickly and accurately figure out what they need. “Great customer service is at the core of our company values, and we are always striving to find innovative ways to help customers, while also providing the best product out there,’’ he said. Farmer Alan Sherman, had a sneak peek at the function and agreed that it was very easy to use. “Having used a lot of culvert pipes from P&F Global in the last 20 years I think this method of being able to calculate water flow will be a very useful tool.’’ Designed with the end-user in mind, the online calculator follows a simple three-step process: 1. Enter your catchment area and rainfall level to automatically generate your culvert pipe size; 2. Enter the length of your job to determine how many lengths of culvert pipe you need;

3. Enter your details and a quote is sent directly to your inbox. For more than 20 years, P&F Global have sourced the most practical and affordable drainage pipes and fittings from around the world. Servicing the rural, commercial, civil, industrial and residential markets, these products are designed fit for purpose for New Zealand’s often challenging conditions. EUROFLO Culvert Pipe is the only twin wall culvert pipe with an external multi-arch rib for strength and a smooth bore for faster flow and is ideally suited to all rural and civil needs — quality you can rely on. Made in Europe it is designed to last for 100 years and is rust and maintenance free. It is the only pipe in the market with sizes from 160mm diameter all the way up to 2,150mm, and comes with a range of fittings, slotted versions, different SN ratings as well as the handy Go-In system to connect the pipe to sumps and other outlets. Stepping out of the shadow by Andy Bryenton

With the demise of the big two — Falcon and Commodore — the market is left with a gap as obvious as a missing tooth. Or is it? If it’s your intention to drive a powerful, eight cylinder, four door cruiser, then an option exists right under your nose. And it’s one which has, in the past, shared everything from Kiwi highways to Aussie racetracks with the big red and blue machines. If none of the other options on the table — go European, drop two cylinders, drop two doors — are appealing, then it’s about time to remember that there’s a third big American auto maker who once made a massive mark on the scene Downunder. That’s the Chrysler and Dodge family of cars, which gave us the family-friendly Valiant, the big Dodge ute and of course the iconic Charger. So, what can Chrysler offer to assuage the loss felt by Ford and Holden V8 fans? Well, first of all, there’s the 300 SRT. A timeless shape with an aggressive stance, acres of mesh grille, and most importantly of all, a massively powerful, 350 kilowatt Hemi V8 under the hood. Built like a Benz and appointed with a host of sophisticated gadgetry — even launch control — the big 300 offers a slightly more refined delivery of maximum torque and horsepower than either an FPV or HSV, which were both joyfully raucous and keen for some tyresmoking fun. But a gentleman bruiser is

Heavy Vehicle Service and Repair Detroit trifecta — Chrysler and Dodge are ready to step in where Falcon and Commodore used to rule

still a bruiser, even under the neatly cut suit and tie. Underestimate over six litres of Hemi engine at your peril. Looking deeper into the family of Chrysler and Dodge vehicles you’ll find even more power on tap, and though it’s eminently easier to get hold of a new 300 SRT — literally just walk into a local dealership and start talking options — the Dodge end of the spectrum out of the States will certainly get the hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention. The Dodge Challenger Hellcat SRT is inspirational in all kinds of ways, but very recently an enterprising Texan car thief decided to remake Vanishing

Point — or possibly the end sequence of Death Proof — with a white example of the 707 horsepower supercharged muscle car. The only vehicle with police written on it which could keep up was a helicopter. So, for those who feel like the world has become a colder, more austere place with the loss of the Falcon and Commodore, consider instead a third option. You won’t be jumping the fence or compromising on power. And think of the pedigree you’ll be buying into. Dad’s Valiant Ranger is a long way in the past, but for big four door V8s, Chrysler rules the present.
