Rural schools competition opens

3

HP New Zealand is asking rural students to share their vision of how they think they will learn in the future to be in the running to win a share of $26,000 worth of HP products and support. The HP Rural Schools Competition, in its third year, gives rural New Zealand primary schools — and for the first time this year — secondary schools, the chance to win HP technology and support best suited to the school’s needs. HP New Zealand has partnered with Rural Women New Zealand, offering rural primary and secondary schools the chance to win HP products, including Sprout, a fully integrated 3D scanner, 3D object capture and editing desktop. The winning schools will also receive support from HP NZ experts to help them get the most out of their technology. HP category manager, Victoria Mahan, said she is looking forward to seeing the students’ and schools’ visions of how they think they will learn in the future and what they will be able to do with technology. “We’ve opened up the competition to include secondary schools for the first time this year so we’re really excited to see the visions of education in the future from a range of ages and rural schools. All children in New Zealand

need to be equipped to live, play and work in an online world. “It’s not just about being engaged at school, but also preparing for the workforce of tomorrow.” Rural Women New Zealand vice president Fiona Gower said: “This is such a great competition and we’ve seen first-hand the benefits it’s delivered for previous winners. It’s a fantastic opportunity for rural schools to have the chance to tap into the expertise of a global technology company like HP.” From September 14 2016, rural primary and secondary schools throughout New Zealand, with less than 450 students, will be eligible to enter the HP New Zealand Rural Schools competition. To enter, schools simply need to submit an entry form at www.hp.co. nz/ruralcompetition. Entry criteria, full terms and conditions can also be found on the HP New Zealand website. Photos and videos to support entry forms are welcomed. Entries close at 6pm, October 31 2016.

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

They met at university in Holland when they were studying towards a degree in agriculture with Frank specialising in soil science and water management and Josje in rural development. They became extensionists in Central America as part of a programme to help communities. “By the 1990s we felt the aid programme was doing more harm than good as it was making people reliant on multinational input rather than making them independent,” said Josje. “There were alternative farming systems which let people grow quality food and we decided to walk the talk and lead by example.” The couple moved to New Zealand in

1992 and studied at Massey University to get to know the country politically and financially before embarking on their new life. They wanted to be close to Wellington and grow Mediterranean crops as the climate is similar to where they came from. They originally chose olives and echinacea but ended up growing vegetables. “We set up a Community Support Agriculture programme and would like to see other farms do this as well as part of a group.” CSA allows members to have a personal relationship with the growers and direct access to high quality, fresh produce. “My father was a butcher in Holland. Femke feeds the chickens and helps with other jobs as well Sanne works with her parents with all aspects of the family business the 80s had a big impact on the small businesses including the butcher, the baker and the green grocer. “My dad knew the farmer, the cows, and the farm they came from. He used the whole cow before the next lot of meat was brought into the shop. It’s not like that these days,” said Josje. “We believe local communities are important. Our aim is not to make a huge profit, but to look after the environment and people.” They are looking into providing workshops and courses with their philosophy of growing organically literally and philosophically. “Firstly we establish healthy soil. Soil and people both need a healthy diet and variety. If you grow potatoes all the time the soil gets tired - after a couple of years this can cause disease. We rotate the crops and that helps keep pests and disease away.” As part of the CSA members get an understanding of why the produce may look different to commercially grown crops. “They learn about seasons too. When you eat and grow in season, you are eating the fruit and vegetables at their optimum. We don’t call things organic, we prefer the word agri ecology. We

listen to nature and walk the gardens. We don’t follow recipes, we look at what the soil needs. “Once you feed the soil with humus and compost the little critters are fed and they look after the plants and then the plants have all the vitamins and nutrients and people are eating healthy food.” They have an eight hectare block in Greytown which is rocky with olive trees planted on it. “Before we harvest the olives we see if people want olive oil. We know beforehand if we have sold the crop so we are not wasting our time and energy. “We have chickens and greenhouses where we sow the seeds as well. In Masterton we have 12 hectares which is good market garden soil. “We grow in groups so the soil uses different things. Leafy crops like spinach, lettuces and Asian greens are grown together. “Crops like cabbages, broccoli and cauliflower are another group as are the tomatoes, capsicum, courgettes, eggplants and cucumbers.” Their perennial crops include rhubarb, asparagus and strawberries and they have a small block on which they sow lettuces every two to three weeks.

“We have approx 130 customers per week. Our aim is 200 in Summer. We want to grow to an optimum not a maximum, and create diversity. “We want our children to appreciate nature and have respect for life. Our oldest is 23-years-old and works with us and our 21-year-old is studying ecology. The two youngest are still in primary school.

“We want them to be able to make a living from the farm. Ethically this style of farming is our work and our lifestyle. It hasn’t always been easy financially, but if we did something else we would still end up doing the same thing and it feels really good to look after the people, the land and ourselves, and we know we are becoming an example that growing can be done differently.”

The

TREASURE of the sea

by Ann Morgan

In the early 1990s teachers, Jill Bradley and her husband Keith Atwood, spent long summer holidays visiting organic farms across New Zealand.

I

t was life changing for the couple for a number of reasons including tasting great food and discovering the value of seaweed. “It was a hot, wet, fungal summer and most farms were having problems with issues such as botrytis in strawberries and facial eczema on cattle but one farm was not having trouble,” said Jill. “This property belonged to a German couple and their farm was exceptional with no health problems with soil, plants, pasture or animals. Their major farm input was seaweed.” After that trip Jill and Keith committed personally to investigating the value seaweed has and growing organic food for their family.

“In those days not one organic input was to be found in any garden store. We were living in Auckland with a beautiful garden and large grounds, but were reliant on high chemical inputs. “We researched seaweed internationally to discover who uses it, what it is good for and how it was used. Seaweed worldwide are loosely categorised by colour — red, green and brown. The brown category was the one widely used in agriculture and horticulture.” In the 1940s in New Zealand 500 different seaweed species were known and over 65 per cent were native to the country. “Today we know more than 800 species.

THE CLEAR SOLUTION

The Bradley and Atwood family are have grown the Agrisea business highlighting the goodness in seaweed We trialled different New Zealand brown species until we identified the premium one — Ecklonia radiata. Keith brewed and I grew — only then did we begin to learn the real value of seaweed. “We were founding members of the Seaweed Association of New Zealand,

growth promotants, trace elements, amino acids — it is a nutrient ‘feast’, a smorgasbord for soil biology, plant and animal health. “Our own property was changing and thriving. We had eight Golden Queen peach trees that had leaf curl and brown rot so severe not one peach was edible. We treated the drip lines with seaweed. By season two the disease had halved and we treated them with soil and foliar. In season three we had eight healthy trees with wonderful crops. The ‘secret’ to seaweed was and still is simply — high nutrition. “We read that famous rosarian, Allen G Scott, was trying to save old roses around a church in Morrinsville. We sent our seaweed to him and they thrived. Rose growers and gardeners started visiting and asking for liquid seaweed concentrates. “Finally a Hawke’s Bay orchardist rang for two 200-litre drums for his apple orchard after his wife had used it on her garden. This compelled us to produce and sell to others. “We registered a company called Ocean Organics Ltd in 1996 and our certified organic seaweed products were appreciated by gardeners.” Moving to the Hauraki Plains they purchased the old butter factory in Paeroa where products including comfrey sprays to induce flowering, garlic spray and creams, and soaps with seaweed for humans were developed.

“Kiwifruit people began to make enquiries and we took this very seriously and commissioned three years of research across five kiwifruit orchards to assess the effects of AgriSea seaweed. The results included an 11 per cent increase in yield year one. Significantly longer storage capacity and 150 per cent increase in worms and larger fruit size,” said Jill. “Avocado, vineyard and dairy farmers came to us and we felt a huge responsibility to growers who depended on their land. “In 2003 our son, Tane, did market research on dairy farmers’ perception of the word ‘organic’. “It was extremely negative so on advice from business experts we created AgriSea New Zealand Ltd. This removed the word ’organics’ from any company indicators.” Liquid seaweed concentrates for soil, foliar/pasture, seaweed salt blocks and seaweed pellets were then developed. Jill says as rules tighten for farmers around regulatory requirements for reduced chemical inputs to mitigate environmental factors, including severely compromised waterways, farmers need well-researched alternative management strategies. The single biggest on-farm factor to ensure healthy waterways is

Tane checks the Agrisea product whilst it is brewing to have healthy soil. AgriSea products are bio-stimulants that support the life in the soil. Jill and Keith have now handed over the reins to Tane and daughter-inlaw, Clare. “One of their aims is to increase exports once a safe management framework for seaweed is in place. Tane and Clare are as committed to research as we were.”

Blue for you

Wool for sleeping comfort VIP Beds — for Very Important Pets — has been making extraordinary wool-filled beds for 25 years from a small woolshed on the outskirts of Waipukurau, with very few days without orders. Ex-veterinary nurse, Barbie Cassidy, is helped by three saddlers and local women making three kinds of beds for dogs and two varieties of pillows for people (or passengers). What is extraordinary about these products is the process that the wool undergoes for her indoor dog bedding and pillows. Strong wool is blown through a centrifugal force to form bulky balls, which do not flatten and keep their shape and buoyancy for both dogs and people to enjoy. The wool balls massage naturally and the therapeutic effect helps alleviate arthritic pain in old dogs and acts as an arthritis prevention in young dogs. The VIP beds are oval nests, covered in tartan cotton and built on a base of New Zealand wool carpet. Mutt Mattresses are fat mats for dogs, ranging from a banana box bed for mini schnauzer, perfect for in the car or at home, to a Great Dane size. For working dogs and those kept out of the house, Tough Stuff double-stacked mats are filled with long fleece wool, designed to flatten. The only care needed is an occasional hour on the roof of the kennel to dry out on a fine day. Testimonials pour in, attesting

to the improved health and well-being of these hard working dogs. “The only complaint has been that the dogs do not want to get up in the mornings!” said Barbie. Prices range from $45 to $55 for Tough Stuff; from $45 to $250 for Mutt Mattresses and from $120 to $480 for VIP Beds. “It is money well spent on helping dogs live and work longer and more freely.” For more information, phone 06 858 9766, email vipbeds@xtra. co.nz or visit www.vipbeds.co.nz.

Mark Hadlow is a Blue September ambassador and has a special message for our rural men. “I’m a firm believer that prevention is better than cure and I am amazed at the number of men who seem to think you don’t need the ‘blue glove check’ post 50 or even younger,” said Mark. “Yes sure the PSA blood test is a good start but why not go the whole hog and face your fear and get a check.” Mark says this is not scaremongering. “Too many rural men are diagnosed too late and when that happens, the outcomes are not good. Ask your doctor to do the check — it’s no big deal and can be a lifesaver. The relief and the joy of the knowledge of a normal prostate is outstanding and such a great feeling.” Mark says you owe it to yourself, your family and your stress levels. “My doctor and I joke about it — how to start your day with a surprise, a blue glove surprise. It’s not a laughing matter at all, however some men are too scared or anxious to do it and we need to help them. So really it’s up to the ‘blue glovers’ of Blue September to challenge a mate and say ‘face your fear’ and get relief. “There’s nothing brave in pretending that prostate cancer can’t happen to you. Over 3,000 men are diagnosed and 600 die each year from prostate cancer. Many of them could have been diagnosed earlier by getting gloved and had a much better

Mark Hadlow

outcome. So go on, get it done and smack fear outa the park.” The prostate is a small gland, normally about the size of a walnut. It sits just below the bladder and surrounds the upper part of the urethra — the tube that carries urine from the bladder and semen from the testicles to the outside of the body through the penis. Prostate cancer is the presence of cancer cells or a cancerous growth in or on the gland. In many cases, prostate cancer is slow growing and having it won’t affect you, but in some cases, the cancer is more aggressive and can spread to your bones, liver and lungs.

Bobby calf changes ‘still needed’ New regulations aimed at improving the standard of care for bobby calves have now been in effect since last month, with the Ministry of Primary Industry recording that during the peak of the calving season for dairy farmers, improvements in calf welfare have been noted across the supply chain. The regulations which took effect on August 1 were part of an accelerated programme focussed on further improving the standard of care for bobby calves, a programme which was highlighted by media exposure earlier this year, which showed abuses in the industry both at a farm pickup point and

in a slaughter yard. “Everyone across the supply chain has a role to play when it comes to the welfare of bobby calves. What we have seen and heard so far is promising and a majority of people are following the rules, but we have also noticed some people still need to change their practices to ensure all

Calf Rearing be a specialist Why Use Hutches or Pens?

Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.

• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment

• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

regulations are met,” said MPI’s director of Verification Services, Chris Kebbell. “We’d like to acknowledge the majority of farmers, transporters and processors who have always cared for young calves and are meeting the regulations with ease, but we remind the minority that they have an obligation to care for calves and they face infringement fines or prosecutions if they don’t.” The four regulations introduced this season include fitness for transport requirements, a maximum transport duration of 12 hours, the prohibition

on killing calves by blunt force to the head and the prohibition of transporting calves by sea across the Cook Strait. These regulations provide MPI with additional tools to respond to those who are not meeting their obligations for the welfare of calves. “The key area we have noted that could be improved by the minority is ensuring calves are fit for transport. Farmers should not rely on transporters to make the decision on fitness for transport, as farmers are in the best position to know the animals.”

The mystery of irrigation Irrigation is the black art of replacing water which has been removed from the ground by evapotranspiration (ET) through plants. This is part of how plants ingest their nutrients. Important points to know: NIWA have ET rates for your area, check their website. It will show rates as a graph through the year, summer obviously higher but ET is also determined by the atmosphere’s ability to absorb the moisture, so it is higher on windy days due to higher dispersal. Every millimetre of rain you need to apply daily requires 10,000 litres/ha, so if ET hits 5mm you need at least 50,000 litres every hectare, every day. That’s if you want the plant to really grow, not just look green. You need to match ET rate plus allowance for percolation through the soil (over irrigation) plus loss during irrigation, minus rainfall (if any). ET rates follow quite closely to available moisture rates so it is important to begin irrigating early enough as the plant growth will have checked by the time you notice it. Woody plants have a higher ET rate than leafy plants so kale ET will likely be more than chicory. Admittedly plants with deep roots will hang on longer, mostly in heavy soils but in the end need still water replacement.

Irrigating methods are just that, management tools, don’t be fooled by the fancy promises, they can’t make your plant excel with less than ET rate — assuming you are trying to hold constant moisture in the ground. Beware of stories telling you that a system allows you to get away with less application. They do exist but also require electronic monitoring and experience on the operator’s part. Keep water droplets as large as practicable. This is where you can save some water. Despite public perception, small sprinklers can easily have the same losses as large sprinklers, it’s just not so visible. The law of physics tells us when you expose water to warm air it evaporates. Large bodies of water (large droplets) have a greater mass to surface area than small bodies, so fine mist tends to evaporate more — keep the nozzle size up/nozzle pressure down, within reason! There’s no free lunch with irrigation, either you can have a cheap system with lots of running costs and maintenance or a more reasonably priced system but with better application evenness,

better growth patterns, and easier and less time consuming management and maintenance. Often the principal cost differences between the two are not proportional to the results. Clement

Tractors, trucks and trailers, mowers and milking gear all took a beating this winter. Those using yesteryear’s ‘cheap’ products to keep corrosion out of tools and toys, paid the price. Seized machinery, failing electronics and rusty sheds were the result, meaning expensive repairs and wasted time. Professionals know the best products are the most cost effective and fishermen note that the big boys like Hampidjan or Sanford Fishing use CorrosionX. Clever hunters have worked out that the CorrosionX they buy is what our own navy, coastguard and most air forces of the world use in their weaponry. The product is also helping power companies and wastewater works around New Zealand. These guys never settle for second best, so why would you? CorrosionX waterproofs electronics in the milking shed, keeps the rust out of hydraulic fittings and un-seizes wheel nuts and bolts on a logging truck faster than

is very little that can’t be achieved with this mid range machine — but those who wish for more power can opt for its ‘big brother’, the 68 horsepower Ranger 900 with the ease of power steering. Smaller and more nimble, but still built with hard work to the fore, the Ranger ETX boasts great fuel economy and a platform of near unrivalled versatility. Herding, fencing, spraying — even hunting and fishing — all are able to be accomplished with aplomb by this 31 horsepower, fuel-injected machine which packs the usual Ranger toughness into a compact little package. In terms of innovation, Polaris have alternative fuels and powertrains locked down. Farms which run on diesel power can opt for the convenience of adding a Ranger 1000 Diesel to their fleet, drinking from the same tank as those big tractors. As is the way with many modern road-going vehicles, Polaris have also taken up the challenge of providing a fully electric option in their lineup. The Ranger EV comes equipped with a single 48-volt induction motor and the same kind of silent, on-demand power which has rocketed brands like Tesla to the front pages of auto mags worldwide. With plenty of sharp tools like these in the shed, it’s easy to see why Polaris are quietly confident about their range and why they have become a force to be reckoned with in the agricultural sector. It’s a pack which becomes even more formidable when one shifts focus toward quads and crossovers — like the fully roll-caged Ace and recreation-ready General — giving potential customers a whole lot to think about this spring.

eter and Sue McWilliam own Maungaraki Cattle Company which is located in the limestone ranges south-east of Masterton on approximately 250 hectares of medium hill country. They run Pustertaler cattle alongside their studs of Angus and Gelbvieh pedigree herds. Pustertaler are a rare, hardy breed from South Tyrol in the north-east of Italy in the Dolomite mountains region. “My passion is beef cattle genetics and like most dedicated pedigree breeders we import genetics from around the world to improve our seed stock to produce functional breeding bulls for our clients across the country. This means hopefully they are getting the best of the best,” said Peter. Seven years ago Peter and Sue visited the home of the Pustertaler

cattle in the Dolomite Mountains and met some very enthusiastic breeders who are trying to save the cattle from extinction. The couple was able to import embryos from some of the best donor cows there. “These cattle are one of the world’s rarest breeds. There are less than 500 purebred females in the world,” said Peter. “Most of these are in Europe with a small nucleus in South Africa and our herd here in the Wairarapa.” The cattle have been in Europe for hundreds of years and are one of the oldest breeds going back centuries. They are not a hybrid, they are absolutely pure and that is what they are trying to preserve. “They have become a serious hobby for me now. It is quite a challenge to keep the breed going. They are hardy alpine cattle and great foragers. With

the expansion in the dairy industry here, traditional beef cattle herds are being pushed further into the hill country so we need to breed cattle that can handle these tougher situations. I believe the Pustertaler breed could be of great value in these challenging conditions. “The future requirements of our industry will require beef cattle that will perform and thrive under tough hill country conditions and have the ability to reproduce easily and give us quality carcasses that maximises hybrid vigor. Peter and Sue have been very selective in their breeding programme and only choose the very best females to go into their pure-bred herd. Over the past few years they have built their herd up to 30 breeding females, with almost half being full-blood Pustertaler with the remainder being half and three-quarter breds selected from their top Angus and Gelbvieh females. “They have a great temperament, are good milkers and maternally they are seriously good mothers,” said Peter. “The hardy breed has a high yielding carcass and succulent sweet tender beef.” The cattle colour stamp their progeny with a distinctive white stripe all the way down their back including their tail, whilst the body is black or red. The bulls weigh around 800–900 kilograms and are moderately framed cattle, they are similar to the British breeds and the cows weigh around 500–650 kilograms making them ideal for hill country. “Their calves tend to be lively and very healthy and with each lactation

Pustertal cattle are one of the world’s rarest breeds period, the milk output of the cows increases.” Peter says the cattle can survive in very rough conditions and they have very good feet and legs which is important to New Zealand farmers with rougher properties. “Pustertaler cattle have been grazing the valleys and summer alpine pastures for hundreds of years; they are one of the oldest breeds that go back centuries. They are not a hybrid, they are absolutely pure and that is what we are trying to preserve. “In Austria, Italy and Germany there is a dedicated breeding programme designed to ensure the breed’s survival and they are keen to find people interested in maintaining the breed outside Europe should a disease outbreak or similar tragedy cause the cattle to be wiped out in Europe.

The native choice The Native Plant Nursery was first established in Taupo and has been growing native plants since 1961. The company then branched out to Waiuku in South Auckland and has now established a nursery in Christchurch on Marshland Road.

We supply quality plants for landscaping and ecological restoration (with seed sourced from your region), as well as farming revegetation and general gardening requirements at wholesale prices. We also offer a range of exotic species to fast growing shelter belt and firewood plants. Plant grades range from seedlings in root trainer packs through to large grade two-metre trees. This range is complimented with a large selection of plant growth and protection products. New Zealand’s native plants are part of our heritage and many of them are only found here. If you have an area on your farm or small block that is overgrown with weed species, don’t be overwhelmed by the thought or restoring it with native plants, the process is actually very simple and straightforward. Cutting out or removing some of the weed species in selected areas and leaving some in place to remove later will provide shelter and protection for the native species to grow and become established. Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. Servicing Wellington and the greater Wairarapa

Ace offal cookers for dog and pig food, also available as grain cookers for horses

The biggest smile in Wellington belongs to Darran Keeling, the general manager at the brand new, state of the art Hutt Valley SsangYong. “One of the best decisions SsangYong New Zealand has ever made, investing in the ever growing Wellington area,” said Darran. “Wellington and the Wairarapa continues to be a growth area, and the Hutt Valley is a fantastic part of Wellington to establish a new dealership, with people wanting to buy locally. “As well as selling and servicing SsangYong and LDV vehicles, we offer servicing for all other makes and models and look after all fleet servicing requirements. We, like all SsangYong Dealerships are New Zealand owned, as are the importers. That’s important because the money spent by SsangYong owners stays in New Zealand and doesn’t go offshore.” The SsangYong range includes the popular Tivoli, Korando, Actyon Ute, Rexton and Stavic models, with prices starting from as low as $25,990. LDV vans are also available at the Hutt Valley site — the quality diesel van range was launched in New Zealand 18 months ago. Sales for the brand are going very well in New Zealand, consolidating it as the number two selling van in the country for the past four months. The LDV V80 range is powered

Available in 63Litre and 94Litre, stainless steel bin on a tipping frame. Plugs into standard 230v socket. Fitted with 2 hour timer and neon. Have been in the market for over 30 years.

by the 2.5-litre Motori Diesel engine and starts from as low as $29,990 plus GST. The new G10 range of vans added to the market in December 2015 has made a big impression alongside the already popular V80 range of cargo and passenger vans. Darran says SsangYong and LDV customers are now better informed. “They still demand quality and reliability but they refuse to be held ransom by brands that don’t cost any more to build. People often come to us on price, to compare what we have. Once they look at and drive our models, the

sheer build quality wins them over nearly every time. “People buy SsangYong because they can keep their family safe, the ride is quiet and smooth, and they know they are getting a quality, well-built vehicle that performs. “Farmers buy SsangYong as they can trust the strength and reliability of our vehicles, particularly the Actyon Ute, which can be configured to suit any work or farm situation.” Hutt Valley SsangYong are at 2 Wakefield Street, Lower Hutt.
