ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

DairyNZ has developed an app, called EnviroWalk, to make it easier for farmers to assess their fertiliser use, effluent, waterways, races, cropping, water use and irrigation, and create an action plan on their smartphone. Approximately 1,500 farmers have already downloaded the free app since it was launched in July. DairyNZ Lower North Island Catchment Engagement leader Adam Duker who led the development of the app, says farmers are always looking for ways to improve their environment and we wanted to make it as easy as possible for them. “The app allows them to have all the information they need at their fingertips.” He says the app has a series of yes/no questions to help farmers identify areas on their farm that have opportunities to do things differently and get better environmental outcomes. Depending on the answers to the questions, the app DairyNZ has developed an app, called EnviroWalk suggests solutions or actions. These form the basis of the action and he says the app helps take the plan which can be downloaded, guess work out of assessing a farm’s printed and updated at any time. environmental impact. “An added benefit is that once the app “The EnviroWalk app is all things is downloaded it can be used with no environmental for your farm in one internet connection and accessed place. Turner Contracts Wairarapa 2012 Ltd

To link consumers of its premium retail products back to the farm, Silver Fern Farms have invested in traceability to support the growth of the company’s branded products. “We want to deliver transparency in the food chain for our consumers who are increasingly interested in knowing where their food has come from, and that their food has been produced safely, with care and in a sustainable way, says chief executive Dean Hamilton. “The investment is across our chain of care, and in linking those elements together. Our new retail packaging that is being progressively rolled out here and overseas will have two new traceability features.” The packaging will contain a unique, fraud-proof, QR code on every pack. This will allow the consumer to scan the code to verify that it is 100 per cent an authentic Silver Fern Farms product. “It will show which region in New Zealand the product came from, link the consumer to stories of our farmers in that region as well as recipes for that specific product that has been purchased,” says Mr Hamilton. “Secondly, we have been working with New Zealand origin verification company Oritain for more than three years to develop a scientific traceability system for our products to provide proof of origin certification for our consumers. “Through linking with Oritain our new retail packaging will be able to provide absolute confirmation to the consumer that the product is true to our ‘100 per cent made of New Zealand’ commitment. “We are excited by these new and innovative consumer-facing traceability developments and the further trust this will build with consumers and Silver Fern Farms.” General manager sales Grant Howie says investing in robust systems through the supply chain is becoming crucial for food producers. “Ultimately we would like to provide traceability from the consumer to the individual farm. We are investing now to create that opportunity in the future. “We can certainly see a time when premium consumers will want to know

how that farm is sustainably operated, what care has been provided to the animals, and the environmental aspects of the farm. “The vehicle for that information we believe will very likely be FarmIQ — the online central information hub we developed in a Primary Growth Partnership with the Government and Landcorp. “The use of the FarmIQ platform is growing strongly amongst New Zealand farmers, with over 1,400 farms now using it. “Silver Fern Farms has invested more than $5m in the last seven years in developing the software, and we are pleased to see the broad industry uptake. “Allowing a consumer of our Silver Fern Farms product to ‘look into’ information from a farm that grew the product will provide that next level of food trust and authenticity with our brand.”

“T

he original orchard is more than 100 years old and was planted by James Hutton Kidd in 1906. He personally created the world famous Gala apple,” says Stephen. “The Kidd family lived in Wanganui where they were fruit growers. They relocated to Greytown in 1906 and James purchased a twenty-acre farmlet in 1910 and planted a mixture of soft fruits such as blackcurrants and gooseberries along with apple trees. “He continually experimented with propagating new varieties of apples. As well as the Gala, his cross pollination resulted in varieties including Kidd’s Orange Red, and the Freyburg.

James died in 1946 and left his estate in the hands of trustee, Mr W A Tate. “My granddad, Stan Meyrick, was raised on a dairy farm in Carterton and he trained to be a fitter and turner in the mid-1920s and wanted to work on the railway but couldn’t get work so he moved to Greytown and started working at two apple orchards, one belonging to Mr Tate,” said Stephen. “After many years granddad started a business selling fruit and vegetables to people in southern Wairarapa, travelling around selling the produce off the back of his truck but the long hours started taking a toll on his family.” Mr Tate approached Stan in 1953 to buy

Orchard Holm — James Hutton Kidd’s orchard and on October 3, Pinehaven Orchards was born and Stan was the new owner. “He grew soft fruit as it was a good cash income when times were hard but later he replaced them with apple and pear trees. He semi-retired in the eighties and I was brought into help my dad. He had started working in the orchard at 15 years old. He was taught everything granddad knew and they grew apples, pears and stone fruit.” The produce was sold either in their little fruit shop or sent to the Apple and Pear Board which sold their apples and pears locally. In 1981 they purchased part of the neighbouring farm to expand the orchard and the three men planted new varieties of fruit on this block. Stan remained a part of the company and helping in the orchard until the day he died. “In the late eighties the Apple and Pear Board deregulated the local market to concentrate on the export market and Wairarapa fruit growers were encouraged to supply our fruit for export,” says Stephen. “In 1989 we had the only packhouse in the Wairarapa, and we packed Wairarapa’s first shipment of export Cox’s Orange apples. It was such a success the next year we exported our entire crop. “Through the 90s we sold our apples overseas — times were good, but the market was starting to become saturated.” Stephen was thrown in the deep end of the business when his father Stuart became ill and died in

1997. The export market was declining slowly and Stephen had to make some major business decisions. “I removed the pack house and concentrated on growing apples and in 2003 we purchased a main road business to sell the excess produce. In 2005 we decided to sell our crop locally and plum trees were planted as well as raspberries, corn and pumpkins to add to the variety of produce we could supply. “When the Udy street orchard turned 100 years old, we replanted Pinehaven’s heritage apples which took us back to where we started. “Our family business still proudly grows and supplies fruit and vegetables ‘Grown by Us in Greytown’. “Working in the orchard is all I know, it is what I do and I love it. When I left school I came straight here. I did a diploma of horticulture at Massey and then came back and carried on. “When you are working with something that takes 12 months from a flower to a fruit and back to a dormant flower again it is rewarding. We are always doing something different, the harvest and the tilling and pruning. Then we prepare for the next season. Stephen says having the shop on the main road and supporting the local market has been a positive experience. “We enjoy growing the sauce tomatoes for people to be able to make their own sauces at a reasonable cost. “There is a lot of satisfaction from caring for the orchard — we love having it, it suits us and is a great way of life.”

WAIRARAPA FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Joanna Manson An appreciation for good olive oil has taken Helen and John Meehan on a journey from corporate life to one of the country’s oldest groves in rural Martinborough.

G

rowing up in the north of England, Helen says good quality olive oil was not much of a consideration. It wasn’t until a holiday in France that she realised how much oil she was consuming — it was the first time she and John had come across what they described as “good” olive oil. After relocating with John’s accountancy firm to New Zealand, the taste has had a lasting impact ultimately leading to a change in lifestyle for the couple once they ended their corporate jobs in Wellington. “I was approaching a significant birthday and thought ‘do i really want to sit at a desk for the next 15 years’ and the answer was no, so I thought what do you do next?”

They considered both the olive and wine industry and even the possibility of moving to Nelson. One day the couple spotted an existing olive grove appropriately named Olivo for sale, John suggested they ‘go and check it out’ and by the time they drove out the drive they were sold on the idea of running their own olive oil business. After purchasing Olivo the Meehan’s moved onto the property with 800 olive trees. “During the first two to three years we concentrated on understanding the grove, the olive trees and olive oil,” Helen said. “We re-branded, I decided we were a ‘new world’ olive oil and we wanted to

reflect that. We’ve also planted another 400 trees, making 1,200 altogether — right from day one we wanted to run this as a commercial business. A lot of people have olive oil trees as a hobby.” As a commercial business Olivo was profitable from early on and is described by Helen as “boutique, artisan and gorgeous — not the cheapest on the market.” Her focus is wanting the oils to taste superb and look fabulous. The couple also realised they had to expand their product base from just one extra virgin oil if they wanted to make money and they soon became one of the first in the country to develop infused oils. The first two infused flavours were porcini and bay, this year they have nine different varieties available. While improving the grove Helen and John also focussed on rebuilding the house on site deciding to add an additional oil tasting room to the premises. Olivo’s close proximity to most of Martinborough’s popular vineyards has meant the tasting room is never short on visitors over the summer period. Around mid-June, with winter, the grove becomes quieter which is perfect timing for the annual harvest to take place. “We used to pick all the olives by hand but these days we have machines that go around Olivo and we contract pick another four or five groves.” Helen says although this year’s crop was labelled good at the end of the day they’re farmers heavily reliant on the year’s weather conditions. “We pick and press every variety we have separately.

The minute it comes off the tree it has to go to the press to keep it top quality.” The Meehan’s have shares in a large press in Greytown. Once pressed the oil sits in tanks for a further three to four weeks to settle. After the resting period the olives are blended together to create two blends of extra virgin olive oil. Using her skills from previous corporate jobs Helen has developed a marketing and sales strategy for the business that had the support of local chefs from day one. “I had never done sales before but when you’re a little company you do everything.” Olivo is now stocked on the shelves of Wellington’s iconic Moore Wilson’s and

nationwide at places like Farro Fresh in Auckland and the Mediterranean Market in Wanaka. Helen hopes the experience people get from sampling Olivo oils will help them become adventurous and see it as being more than just a salad dressing. She has put together a number of recipes including her rosemary cake which uses the lemon infused oil. Looking ahead the Meehan’s believe the grove is currently at the size they want it to be and are happy to keep producing their artisan extra virgin olive oil while educating people about the many uses for good quality oil.

A HARDY BREED Shirley Jenkins is the secretary and herd registrar of the Welsh Black Cattle Society of New Zealand and she and husband Bruce moved into Welsh Black cattle in 1980 as an alternative type of stock for their 600 acres of rolling land, now reduced to 200 acres.

e farmed the family property that Bruce grew up on for some 40 years. It was originally Bruce’s grandfather’s property. “We started with a Friesian dairy herd and went back into Jerseys. We then wanted beef cattle to go with the sheep running on the steeper 400 acres as well, and thought we would try a different breed of cattle to go with them,” said Shirley. “The Welsh Black have a good reputation for being hardy and providing high quality meat and milk. Bruce and I started using the bulls to tidy up after AI for our dairy herd. They seem to be getting more popular and we sell the bulls to dairy farmers. They are average sized cattle, about the same as a short

horn — not great big huge things, but definitely not miniatures. They used to be dual purpose but with the increase of performance of traditional dairy breeds, they are now essentially a beef animal.” Shirley says they grow well and the stock handle all weather and are versatile for grazing hard country and land with rough feed, and they are a good size for lifestyle block owners. The meat has good flavour with nice marbling. “The cattle are bred all around the country and there is a polled strain as well as the horned ones. They are a good breed for anything really.” Last year the Welsh Black Cattle World Congress was held in New Zealand with 46 people visiting from across the world, including, Germany,

New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights. Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials. Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

Australia, United Kingdom, Luxembourg and Wales. “They are still popular in Wales and have been cross bred with an exotic cow but the farmers there are going back to the original now. A Canadian visitor said they are great for the snow conditions where they live,” said Shirley. “They are good for cold climates because of their thick winter coat. They need a shelter to hide from the wind but they don’t necessarily need housing in tough snow conditions as they hold their own heat longer than other breeds. They have very thick hides and like all animals they do need shade in the summer.” In summer and in hot climates this coat is replaced with a smooth, glossy coat. “Welsh Blacks are a true hill country breed of cattle and are generally easy calving,” said Shirley. “Their history of being raised in harsh, outdoor environments and their ability to convert rough feed into weight gain and having a willingness to forage makes them an ideal animal for any property.” The calves are known to be vigorous and hardy and do not present feeding problems in dairy operations. The cows have a long, even lactation up to 300 days and they have a long productive life of 15–20 years. “This hardy breed has much to offer modern farming systems with its ease of

production and award winning succulent meat. For more than 100 years the Welsh Black Cattle Society has nurtured, promoted and sought to improve the breed — a job which is continuing.” Margaret and Edwin Foord have 40 head of cattle and say they like them because of their temperament. “I was first introduced to the breed through some bulls my dad had. They were older Welsh Black and they were very calm and mellow to be around,” said Margaret. “Our children mistook them for stumps in the bush and it was then that I got really interested in the cows. My husband and I foot farm so we have a lot to do with the cattle and interact with them. The more we walk and talk to them the more they trust us.” Margaret says cattle they have brought in that had never been handled are now people friendly and as the years go on their progeny have become more trusting. “We sometimes have open days with 50 people visiting and our cattle handle it. They grow well on moderate or rough tucker. At present we are clearing off the neighbour’s property getting rid of the rank tough stuff including gorse and turning it back into pasture. “They are wonderful cattle. They grow well and we don’t lose as many stock because they are so hardy. We highly recommend these cattle for all types of farms, they suit hill as well as low country.“

Beauty and science

Improving joint health

Alluminus Beauty Therapy is a well-established and renowned clinic located in the heart of Greytown. Owner Latasha has created a relaxing sanctuary just for you with the best products and treatments available, and has now added to their treatment menu the Needle Free Infusion machine and the LED light therapy machine. The infusion machine is an electromesotherapy facial treatment that can target fine lines and wrinkles, boost collagen, add hydration, brighten and reducing pigmentation. The LED machine is the only treatment that can treat right down to the deepest layers of the skin where your skin is being formed “non-invasively”. This enables safe and non-invasive light therapy that can help renew, repair and regenerate your skin cells. Treatments include: photo-ageing, sun-damage, pigmentation, age spots, superficial skin irritation, inflammation, redness, acne, scar prevention, skin tone and texture, fine lines and wrinkles, collagen and elastin stimulation. LED can be referred to as a cold laser. LED was originally developed by NASA to aid wound healing in space. It has also been used extensively in the medical profession. Owner Latasha and her team say they are “blown away at the results they can now achieve with both machines”. Aesthetically, this technology has been applied for over 30 years, producing excellent results for skin rejuvenation and acne treatments. Treatment costs are as follows: Single Infusion $90 LED $69 Courses: Infusion $630 buy 7 and get 8th free. LED $250 1 month unlimited. If you would like more information or a consultation about either machine please give us a call 06 304 9660 or email us at info@alluminus.com and we can devise a treatment plan that is best suited to you. From Latasha herself: “As always, it is our aim at Alluminus Beauty Therapy to help you achieve your skin goals at the best possible price and in the safest way possible. Science is ever evolving in the Beauty Industry and it is our pleasure to be able to offer these safe alternatives for you”.

(Part 1) The best part of what I do is to see improvements in those who have the courage to try something different. My client files are full of testimonies of those who have improved. Just this morning a client I have been helping for four months called for her monthly check in. When I first spoke with her she had a very sore hip and various muscle aches and pains. We made some changes to her diet and put her on a number of antiinflammatory and joint supporting supplements. As a result her hip has improved to the point she can walk again. Additionally she has much more energy and the vitamin D we added has helped a great deal with moods and general motivation. The body is quite miraculous. If you feed it the nutrients it really needs then dormant healing processes can then help restore body systems back towards normal. This is especially true for joints affected by osteoarthritis. In March I started helping a man in his 70s with painful arthritis in his knee, feet and hands especially his thumbs.

Worst of all was the joint where the thumb attaches to the wrist. This joint is highly susceptible to arthritis and it can be very disabling. When I spoke to him in June his feet and knees were much improved. He could now use stairs with ease. His hands and thumb have improved significantly and are still improving. While we made some dietary changes the main benefits came from increasing his Omega 3 fish oil to 6,000mg daily and adding a double dose of my joint formula. This meant he initially was taking 1,500mg of glucosamine, 1,500mg of super-high grade chondroitin and 200mg of my proprietary 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Every farmer needs an edge when it comes to pasture burndown and resistance management. And Sharpen® really delivers. Stuck in a rut?

The mystery of engine driven pumps There is nothing new about engine driven pumps. One has only to visit the local A&P show to see various pumps driven by steam, petrol or diesel engines. Most of these pumps will be piston type for delivery of home or stock water and often require a lot of TLC not to mention strong arms for starting. This should not be a deterrent as technology has moved on. Steam admittedly is almost unknown for irrigation pumping due to special skills and equipment. Petrol, except in very small systems is not favoured due to fuel costs and also lower BTU (British Thermal Units) which is how the energy in a fuel is measured. Diesel comes up on top in both these cases. Diesel really is best even for a small system. Take it from a motor mechanic that the extra spent on a diesel unit will more than pay off in the constant slog of irrigation pumping. Electricity certainly is favoured by many but also consider standing line charges and any diminishing of supply to other appliances such as a milking shed. The upgrade of a transformer and extra supply line may well make your eyes water. So, what to buy? Quality Irrigation companies will have access to correctly specified units and we welcome enquiries as a large part of our business at Irri-Max Ltd is in diesel pump units. Generally, buying something from a clearance sale or Trademe will not be the best option. In the first instance can you be sure the pump has been used for exactly the same duty as you intend. Did the original owner spec it correctly? Sellers on many websites often do not know what they are offering. The best they can say about their pump

is they are supposed to have max flow of “X” and max pressure of “Y”. Pumps have a best efficiency point, normally at 2/3 max flow and this is the point a pump technician will try to achieve, balanced with available power and speed from the diesel engine. As you can already appreciate, there are multiple options which make it more than a little tricky for the layman to get it right. Direct drive is preferable rather than belt due to difficulty with belt alignment and even tensioning, along with safety. Electric start is a must even on the small units as irrigation units have a tendency to run shy of fuel. Bleeding is much easier with electric start. Which brings me to the next issue; control Panels! In the next column we will cover some of the fascinating features available for diesel pump units. SEED DRESSI

The Agri-Women’s Development Trust and Ravensdown have joined forces to promote changes across the primary sector. Initiatives run by the trust include leadership and governance programmes that are open to women in the rural community. Lindy Nelson, executive director of the Agri-Women’s Development Trust, says picking strategic partners is not something the organisation takes lightly. “The key benefit for us in working with such a progressive company as Ravensdown is that we share the same aspirations and values,” she says. “Our purpose is to equip women with the skills and confidence to establish change in the primary sector, on the global stage. Our focus is on the planet, profit, people and progress. We see Ravensdown as a vital partner in this.” As farming faces disruptive trends and seeks to extend the sector’s social licence, effective leadership will be the key according to Tracey Paterson, Ravensdown’s general manager of Organisational Development. “Effective leadership is about diversity in decision-making and an important part of that is empowering women in the sector and improving their professional skills. This is why we chose to partner with such a visionary and progressive organisation as the Agri-Women’s Development Trust. “We believe in enabling smarter farming and we know the people in our industry are at the core of this, so this

Making a clean sweep easy Widely known as ‘the dirtiest job on the farm that no-one wants to do,’ getting rid of large deposits of sheep manure beneath the woolshed floor is often relegated to the too hard basket. So farmers, if you want a fast, cost effective way of cleaning out manure from underneath your woolshed, Mark Turton of Clean Sweep Woolsheds is for you. Clean Sweep Woolsheds offer a different system of removing the hard, compacted built up deposits from many years, even if the manure is through the grating. This is a major point of difference from either a sucker machine or by removing the manure by hand as the machine does the work. Mark has designed and built a proven machine that can dig or scrape even the hardest of manure from top to bottom, no matter what the height or length of your woolshed. This is mainly done from outside the woolshed with his hydraulically driven specialised

machine. This is a two-man operation only, with everything they need being able to fit onto a tandem trailer which helps to keep the costs down. He can also clean your count out pens easily by using designed rippers attached to the machine. Using a small Dingo and bucket, covered yards can be cleaned too. The benefit of using Clean Sweep Woolsheds is it will increase airflow, allowing the sheep to dry quicker and you will also notice less ammonia smell.

Mark with his team consisting of Kelly Webber and Joe Clarke have been offering this service for just under two years now. They have covered a wide area in this time including Tararua, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Wairarapa, and even the Gisborne districts. Each individual job is looked at and discussed with the client. They are then given a free quote. For more information phone Mark Turton on 027 682 1186 or visit cleansweepwoolsheds.co.nz

POND DEATH Do we have to kill the good guys to get the bad guys?

That’s got to be the scariest thing any farmer has heard this week.

Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.

sell the fertiliser. Despite the pressure on farmers to clean up their act, these major NPK fertiliser companies are still piling on more phosphate and unstable nitrogen than the soil can handle. Old outdated soil and fertiliser practises are keeping these farms in a primitive state reducing the soil’s ability to hold on to nutrients and water efficiently. It’s time that the experts charged with the responsibility of our clean rivers’ future began addressing this issue and challenge these major fertiliser companies. This action alone will immediately mitigate the primary cause of our problems. This direct action alone will make more progress than two to five years of taxes, collecting vast amounts of money to be wasted on beaurocrats to discover what we already know. LABARONNE

There has been a lot of discussion about these three words during the week, including ownership of it. One spokesperson has estimated consented water users would contribute around two billion dollars. Now the talk is that half will go to iwi and the other half will go towards fixing our polluted rivers and streams. What an irresponsible shambles. Then I remember — there is an election in six weeks. I think this has got a lot more to do with election vote grabbing than actually looking after rivers and streams. Maybe more about getting townie votes at the expense of farmers being whipped with another stick. A wild stab, which is all anyone is doing, is that only a quarter of that will be used for what it is intended. There is no longer any dispute that there is a problem with our rivers and streams and now the focus is on fixing the problem. After studying the process put in place to mitigate these problems and where the farming industry is focussing their efforts, good progress is being made. River and stream fencing, riparian planting on water edges and nutrient budgeting are among these. A disturbing fact which has never been mentioned by media amongst all this noise is the cause of this pollution in our waterways. Where did all this begin? In March this year, after the release of the Waikato Healthy Rivers Plan, my column was entitled ‘Don’t blame the Farmers’. I still stand by that comment. The cause of excess phosphate and excess nitrate in our rivers is common sense yet it has never been mentioned. Farmers get all their fertiliser and nutrient advice from consultants who are appointed by the companies who

Do you remember what you were doing in 1973? It’s safe to say that many of those reading this article were not even born back in the heyday of bell-bottomed trousers, stadium rock and the end of the war in Vietnam. But there’s a worker on Kiwi farms that’s still putting in dawn-to-dusk days despite first hitting the paddocks back when Nixon was in the headlines. Yamaha introduced their AG series of motorbikes to the local market after asking local farmers what they needed in a two-wheeler, and it shows. Simple additions to the already established dirt bike formula have become the standard for agricultural bikes, from the addition of a big kickstand plate through to gearing that allows riders to follow the herd even in thick mud. AG bikes of bigger sizes — up to 200cc — have appeared over the years, with this latter going beyond the farm and becoming a favourite with emergency aid workers and doctors in Africa. That shows how tough this little machine really is, but now Yamaha have expanded their legacy with a new AG 125 for the new millennium. The 2017 Ag 125 expands on the platform of Yamaha’s successful four-

decade commitment to Kiwi farmers, keeping all the best of the old but mixing in new features which have been garnered from both customer feedback and engineering research. That means a revised suspension setup for a smoother ride, with a fully encased chain delivering power from a 124cc air cooled single cylinder four-stroke engine. The emphasis is on easy to handle reliability — a machine which is designed to start first time on frosty mornings, be frugal on fuel, but still able to tackle the gravel, mud, hilly terrain and other natural hazards on the farm. A raft of optional extras can expand the carrying capacity and all-round durability of the bike, but there’s no needless tinsel here — taking a leaf from the late great Henry Ford, you can have your AG 125 in any colour you like so long as it’s blue. From the farm to the front lines — Yamaha’s AG series have become the bike of choice for humanitarian aid as well as farming

farm two-wheeler, this is the perfect replacement — that is, of course, if your old Yamaha AG ever runs out of puff at all.

Heavy Vehicle Service and Repair

ADVERTORIAL

The place for paint Autopaint Wairarapa Limited first began in September 2011 when Reece Pope started the business. Reece has his own passion for restoring cars and tinkering in the shed which helps when our customers come in with some tricky questions. Our paint guy Grant is mostly out in the paint room mixing paint. Each vehicle has its own special code, which gets put into the computer and comes up as a formula to make. The matched colours however are a little trickier as he needs time to get it right which means waiting for each added colour to dry. But if anything needs matching bring in a sample and he will get it done. The Queen Street entrance first opened in 2014 and we are always expanding the shop with new products coming in everyday. We have a range of gardening equipment, different sized rubber sheets and rubber moulding, power tools, sockets, drill bits, hand tools, abrasives, cutting disc’s, safety equipment, nuts and bolts, screws, nails and so much more. If we haven’t got what you want in store most likely we will be able to order it in for you, just another added bonus of having a locally owned and operated business here in town. In recent months we have been in the top five outlets in

• Wind/frost protection machines • Hydraulic repairs & hoses • 24hr breakdown service
