For FNDA Architecture’s father-daughter team, architect Farouk Noormohamed and designer Alia Noormohamed, bringing the elements of nature inside was front of mind, well before putting the sharpie pen to the page when they took on the project. “With the location of this home being on the water, we needed to not just take advantage of the views, but really understand the relationship between nature and the space that we were creating,” Alia says. “We used the space as a canvas, with all the textures and the colours.”
THE REMARKABLE LIGHT INSTALLATION SUSPENDED FROM THE CEILING IS LIKE AN ARTISTIC RENDITION OF VANCOUVER’S SIGNATURE RAINDROPS
The architecture of the home is inspired purely by water. Water, both from the ocean below and the rain from above characterizing Vancouver’s climate, is reflected in every aspect of the design.

Alia says. “You’re trying to situate a space within the context of that nature, and the dialogue between the person and the surroundings. We wanted to have as much space as possible to enjoy that.â€? “With the site we had, there was the challenge of the angular building and some of the rooms emulate that angularity,â€? Alia says. The site itself follows the edge of the water, like the diagonal of a triangle. It was a narrow site, leading down to the ocean, and the clients’ requirements were ambitious – they wanted a house built to entertain, from the outside in, without any encumbrance. “The house was basically set up to enjoy the water at the water’s edge, and everything we did within the house, in all the critical areas, was to [create] views,â€? Farouk remembers. Remarkably, there is not one room in the house that does not have an exterior view. “We opened up the whole house to the ocean, the

Synonymous with travel gear and accessories, Herschel has recently moved into hard- and soft-shell travel luggage, the latter with built-in USB charging ports. Hoffman brought a retro-surf vibe in neon colours to Herschel’s duffel bags, wallets, hats and outerwear for several 2018 collections. Hoffman’s abstract florals continue into winter 2018/2019. Corduroy makes a fashion re-visit this year with Herschel Supply translating the look into backpacks and waist bags. THE ELEVATED HOLIDAY TABLE

HERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT the winter season that compels us to stay in and entertain at home. When hosting a dinner party, you likely spend a lot of time planning your meal, but it’s also important to think about how you want it presented. Just a bit of extra effort can take your table from every day to elegant. Here are some tips to help you get started. > 5614; | TRISHA ISABEY 2*161)4#2*; | TREVOR COOPER

I
LIKE TO START WITH A THEME: Do you want something traditional, glamorous, rustic, or
modern? That decision can lead to a colour scheme. White can be very elegant, especially when punctuated with silver or gold. For more drama, opt for black with pops of red.
TABLEWARE The key to a beautiful setting is in the layers. Start with a charger or service plate under the dinner plate. An investment piece yes, but one that can elevate the table décor. Glass, metal, porcelain, and wood are all great options. Next, add in the dinner plate, salad plate, and if you are serving a soup, a bowl. These pieces don’t all have to be from the same set. I like to mix and match, adding more visual appeal.
LINENS If you opt for a tablecloth, be sure you get the right size. You need to add between nine and 18 inches per side for the drop. White is classic, but patterns can be equally beautiful. A basic rule is if you have patterned dinnerware, stick to a plain tablecloth. Sometimes less is more. Placemats are another great option, and an opportunity to bring in some colour or pattern. Cloth napkins are a lovely, more formal touch. If you go this route you can use napkin rings or get creative: I like to use a simple wide ribbon with a sprig of rosemary. Add in a place card for a touch of formality.
CANDLES AND CENTREPIECES Now let’s talk about the showstoppers. If you are going with a centrepiece make sure it is low enough that you can see over LW RU \RX ZLOO QHHG WR UHPRYH LW IRU WKH PHDO *R ZLWK D ͼRUDO DUUDQJHPHQW WKDW ͤWV \RXU WKHPH RU FKRRVH D WDEOH UXQQHU PDGH from olive leaves. Add in some candleholders with white tapers and you’ll have a simple, elegant look.
FOOD AND WINE Whatever the menu, ensure you have great platters and bowls to present it in. Garnishes can go a long way: A simple sprinkling of parsley on mashed potatoes gives the dish a more elevated look. Fresh herbs, kale and harvest fruits also make for beautiful adornments. And we can’t forget the wine! I like to decant my red into a crystal decanter. For your white wine, consider adding a wine chiller – a standing piece adds a little drama. Setting an elegant table is all about pre-planning. If you the day before. I am a big believer in enjoying the meal with my guests so I like to have as much done as I can before they arrive. Then I can sit back and enjoy the amazing room, ambiance and meal with friends. Happy Holidays!

ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH CONCORD GRAPES AND PINE NUTS
6 oz
Brussels sprouts, halved
20 g
Concord grapes, pickled (see below)
20 g
canola oil
10 g
parsley leaves, whole
3g
pine nuts, roasted
1g
sherry vinegar
Preheat the oven to 450° F. Heat a pan and place brussels sprouts face down, season with salt, then add a thin layer of oil. Once the sprouts turn light golden brown, place in oven. Cook until the stem is tender. You are trying to achieve a dark golden brown colour. Wilt parsley, strain excess oil and transfer to a stainless steel bowl. Add sherry vinegar and grapes to the bowl, toss to combine. Place on plate and garnish with pine nuts.

Place all ingredients into a pot and bring it up to a boil. Transfer pickling liquid into a heat-proof container and chill on ice immediately. Once cool, strain spices and aromatics. Cover concord grapes with cooled pickling liquid for minimum 12 hours before using.
