DANIELLE BRYK
GOING WITH REAL WOOD, MARBLE AND STONE – THE HGTV CANADA HOST DISHES ON WHERE TO SPLURGE AND WHERE TO SAVE
Photographer: Jason Rasposo Photo
Niki Hope interview
WITH DANIELLE BRYK
In the first episode of A Bryk at a Time, Season 2, you tackle your home reno. It’s a great episode. How was the experience of filming your own reno? I thought I would hate documenting the renovation process, but it was just the opposite. Renovations can be stressful, but having the crew around, and to be honest, the food (we got lunch every day) made the entire process more fun. In some ways, it validated all of the work I had been doing over the course of my adult life. I always fixed up the spaces we moved into (with three kids in tow), and it was just what I did. I think I valued it more when I saw that people were interested in seeing the process. How would you describe your style? Urban, pared back but still soulful. Are there any colours/materials you love right now? I love all natural materials. Real wood, real marble, real stone. I’m OK with maintenance, and I prefer materials that patina with age. If you’ve ever tried to buy vintage leather furniture, you’ll know that the older, the better – the more worn, the more expensive. I feel like people are craving a bit of imperfection and character right now.
A
fter two seasons in A Bryk at a Time for the DIY Network and Bryk House for HGTV Canada, designer Danielle Bryk is now one of theTV personalities collaborating on the design and construction of a single dream house on Home toWin, which will be awarded to a registered viewer at the end of the series. The show returned to HGTV Canada for its third big season on April 29, with 26 builders and designers – Bryk among them – set to renovate and transform a shabby countryside property into a modern family home. Bryk is married to actor Greg Bryk, with whom she has three kids, and has a very busy home. Somehow, she manages to make it all look especially good – in particular with her sophisticated-yet-comfortable aesthetic. Bryk gives at home readers some tips on how she makes it all come together so beautifully.
For colours, I’m still loving black walls, any of the bold colours: navy, deep greens. The space has to be right for it though. For example, I’d love to have moody walls at my house, but the space just doesn’t suit it. I’ve kept the main floor all white, and I’m experimenting with the darker colours in the bedrooms.
HGTV Canada host and designer Danielle Bryk describes her style as “urban, pared back but still soulful,” and her beautifully conceived homes are a testimony to this. With an attention to detail, an appreciation of natural materials, and a fearless desire to get her hands dirty, Bryk is definitely a pro to watch.

Plants keep me grounded and present. I’m welcoming anything that requires me to slow down a bit. The hit of greenery is also an amazing visual tool. We use plants when styling all the time. Now, no room is complete for me without plants. It’s my new luxury. Designer Danielle Bryk
What design 2018 trends are you liking? Which ones are you avoiding? I usually avoid trends because I hate the idea of something looking dated in a few years. This is why I keep the backdrop of my spaces simple and inject some trendiness with accessories. I still love the Boho vibe that has been going strong for a while. I like what it suggests and encourages for your lifestyle – relaxation, worldliness, texture. The use of plants might be my favourite thing about this trend. Plants also keep me grounded and present. I’m welcoming anything that requires me to slow down a bit.The hit of greenery is also an amazing visual tool. We use plants when styling all the time. Now, no room is complete for me without plants. It’s my new luxury. What are some of the mistakes people make when tackling renos/designing interiors? I think the biggest challenge is always budget. Even if you are creative, renovations cost money, and they take time – always more than you anticipate. If I could go back and tell my earlier self a few things, it would be to do less and do better. Rather than trying to tackle everything on a shoestring budget, do smaller jobs, but use higher-quality materials. With design, I think the biggest mistake is usually scale. Most often people err on the side of caution and go smaller than they should (light fixtures, carpets, etc.). It’s always best to bring things in to test them out in the space; it’s worth the hassle. How does being a parent influence your design work? Having children meant that everything obviously had to be functional and safe, and anything that made daily life easier or less complicated (proper storage, rooms designed to facilitate your lifestyle) was worth investing in. But more than that, for me, having children opened up a world of whimsy in design that I have never lost, even though my children are older now. I still inject a sense of humour and play into my spaces – for me, design is really about having some fun with life. continued on page 10

Always splurge on the mechanics of the home. You want all of your systems running smoothly before you can enjoy the aesthetics.
WITH DANIELLE BRYK
Designer Danielle Bryk
continued from page 9
What are some areas people should splurge, and where should they save during a reno? Always splurge on the mechanics of the home. You want all of your systems running smoothly before you can enjoy the aesthetics. I’d also say windows and doors – one of my biggest regrets is not doing wood windows when we renovated. I’m old-school, and I much prefer the wood interiors. You don’t have to spend a fortune on finishes like tiles, flooring, cabinets. Keep those things basic and instead amp up the design factor. One of my favourite dining rooms of my own was in an apartment we rented where I used a huge paper lantern over a circular table. The lantern was about $15, but the room had so much impact. Any sage advice for those about to tackle a reno? Don’t rush! Understand that things take time, especially nice things. Be honest with yourself about the budget. Are the quotes higher than you anticipated? Do not enter into it thinking you will make up for it somewhere else. Either secure more money or scale back on the scope. On the show, you do some of the physical work – breaking down walls, installing tile, etc. You must enjoy it … correct? I love doing the physical work. Demolition is extremely therapeutic, and the other tasks, like painting and carpentry – I find them calming. You have to be present, and you have to slow things down. It offers a welcome break from the chaos that is modern life. I started learning the trades because space is very important to me; it affects how I feel, and some of the places we have lived were true fixer-uppers. I could never afford to hire someone to do it for me, and I’m impatient, so I had to learn how to do it myself. I think it is incredibly empowering to be able to change or control your environment. I encourage everyone to learn some of the basic trades. What’s next for the show? Home toWin season 3 began airing April 29 on HGTV. The competition is open to first-time home buyers this season, which will be so exciting, and I love this year’s house.

Coache Collision: A family-run business that goes the extra mile for customers Some of Coache Collision’s clients go back generations. That’s because the North Shore-based familyrun auto collision repair company has been committed to customer safety and satisfaction since 1975. “We’ve been serving the North Shore for over 40 years,” says Norbert Tietze. “My dad started the business, and I have taken it over and two of my own sons work here.” The dedication to customer service started by Norbert’s father at Coach Collision has been passed down through the generations. “Customers get the personal touch dealing directly with the owners. For instance, we recently had a customer who was injured and was unable to pick up her vehicle after it was repaired so we delivered it to Whistler. We do go over and above for our customers.”

Tietze noted that while Coache Collision is wellknown for specializing in high-end vehicles and imports like Audi, BMW and Porsche, they perform repairs on all makes of vehicles.
Coache Collision is equipped with state-of-the-art repair technology and is able to handle private repairs, ICBC claims and private insurance claims.

TIP ON CHOOSING A COLLISION REPAIR COMPANY It’s tempting to choose the first company you find or the team who delivers the lowest estimate. Both approaches, however, can actually end up costing you more in the long run. When you’re looking for a repair facility to take care of your collision repairs, it’s important to choose a team with years of experience, a ton of satisfied customers and reputable professional accreditations.

Rubber Stone: A paving solution that’s soft, durable, decorative, and recycled! Is it time to resurface your old concrete or asphalt driveway? Or maybe you want to transform your patio or deck area into the perfect setting for an attractive, safe, outdoor living area.
Darrel is a home contractor who’s been in the industry for over 25 years. When he discovered Rubber Stone five years ago, he knew his clients would like the product’s look, durability and versatility.
Rubber Stone has you covered. Never heard of Rubber Stone? It’s an eco-friendly paving solution that’s made up of small rubber chips and a polyurethane binding agent. Rubber Stone is hand-troweled over driveways, decks, patios, paving stones, sidewalks and many other surfaces. Rubber Stone is also great for basements, laundry areas, playrooms, gyms, garages, man caves, steps, showrooms, and more.
There’s also the safety factor. Rubber Stone is an anti-slip/skid surface, which makes it perfect for pool decks, jacuzzi areas, driveways, sidewalks, stairs and any other areas around your home that get slippery. And you don’t have to worry about the colour fading because it’s made of a solid synthetic rubber which will not fade or rub off over time.
Rubber Stone can stand up to heavy traffic and harsh weather – rain, snow or summer heat. As well as being good for the planet – paving a twocar driveway keeps around 120 car tires from reaching the landfill, for instance – it’s also less expensive than concrete and other surfacing products. “We are normally two-thirds less than the cost of concrete, if not half the price,” explained Darrel Sharpe of Vancouver Rubber Stone.
The finished Rubber Stone product is flexible and soft to the touch, which means it offers a “cushioning effect” that makes it less impactful than other surfaces when you walk, run and play on it. Another feature that is popular with clients is the ability to create their own unique colour combinations of Rubber Stone. That means transforming a dull, grey concrete or boring beige deck by adding a custom colour mix that compliments your home.
Rubber Stone is also fast to install.
“Our customers like it for the beauty and durability, as well as the safety features it offers. This is a great product.”
“We can do a driveway in one day and they can drive on it in 48 hours,” said Darrel.

Locally made: Twin Lions Contracting When you work with Twin Lions Contracting, it’s a Shore thing. The award-wining renovation company’s entire crew was either born and raised on the North Shore or lives here now – and they treat their clients like family. “We pride ourselves on being local. We also call this picturesque community home,” explained Kevin Hatch, co-owner of Twin Lions. “I think our people is one of our biggest differentiators. We spend a lot of time vetting our crews and making sure they are the right fit for our team and our clients. So, there’s that trust factor, not only with us, but every person that is on site during the renovation. It makes a big difference.” That means not only building award-winning renovations, but also building long-standing relationships with clients. “What I hear from clients all the time is that they just love having our team there and miss them when they are gone. They’ve even received invitations to visit after the project was completed,” said Hatch. Twin Lions, which has been awarded the Best of Houzz award for the past four years, works collaboratively with their clients and its skilled team of designers, architects and sub-trades to help clients realize their unique vision for their home or business.
Hatch notes that they go out of their way to create as stress-free an environment as possible during the renovation process. “Ultimately our holistic approach to renovations is that it is supposed to be a fun process. You are creating this awesome space for yourself and your family.” The North Shore company specializes in mid-size to larger renovations – typically $200,000 and up – but don’t worry, if you’ve got a smaller reno in mind, Twin Lions can also help with your dream makeover. “That’s the other big thing that differentiates us, we won’t turn down small projects. We will take on a kitchen renovation or bathroom because everyone needs their spaces to be renovated and they want the same quality of contractor who would typically work on bigger projects. Having a connection with the client is as important as the project itself.” Speaking of projects, Twin Lions just won a pair of coveted GVHBA Ovation awards – one for best home renovation over $1 million and the other for best condo/townhouse renovation over $300,000. “We’re so proud of our talented team,” said Hatch. TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION ! Don’t spend to the tip of
your budget. “Inevitably clients add something along the way. We call it the While-Your-At-It list. ‘While you’re at it, do you mind doing the fence?’ So, be sure to factor that into your budget.”
! Make sure your contractor actively tracks costs, so you can make real-time adjustments to your project if needed before it’s too far along. ! Be involved. “We love to have clients involved with the decision-making along the way rather than just handing over the keys and going to Palm Springs.”
