Kendall Ansell
WITH AWARD-WINNING INTERIOR DESIGNER
KENDALL ANSELL By Michelle Hopkins
It looked cold. With its high ceilings, expansive windows showcasing stunning mountain and cityscapes, the two-storey Burnaby penthouse was devoid of personality. That was award-winning interior designer Kendall Ansell’s first impression when she was hired by the owners to “replace the boring fireplace” “When you enter the home, you go straight into the kitchen, and it lacked any sense of style,” says Ansell, principal Kendall Ansell Interiors. The clients, a professional couple in their 40s, agreed. They did, however, crave a clutter-free and serene space to come home to after a tough day at work or from their frequent travels. Ansell envisioned a clean, sleek contemporary look that is paired back yet brimming with character, a perfect reflection of the couple that lives here. “First off, we went for a large linear fireplace with four oak stained black panels in a Chevron pattern above it to create a stunning statement wall,” Ansell says. “We then added exposed oak veneer ceiling beams to add depth and warmth to the overall home’s ambiance.” In the living area, Ansell needed to devise a peaceful space that included “comfortable seating and pops of colour for interest, while keeping the look light, airy and welcoming.” To that end, she opted for a hint of soft pink in two chairs, a sky blue and white geometric rug and a large painting with a hint of both hues. “When choosing a quiet colour palette, create interest with texture,” says Ansell, who mixed luxurious materials like wood, modern light fixtures, and accent cushions of different patterns and colours with masterful subtlety. see page 6 !

However, it’s the kitchen’s blue cabinetry that creates the wow factor Ansell was going for. Warm and sleek, Ansell used Benjamin Moore’s Blue Normandy paint for the cabinetry and the lower island. Meanwhile, the oversize cast iron sink and oak waterfall on the island give the kitchen a touch of glam, and the open shelving against the blue and oak beams really wows. The home now boasts big-time personality. “Overall, the feel is both classy and timeless,” says Ansell, who recently won the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s award for a universal design project. “In the end, the clients really love the new, grander look and feel of their main floor.” Sought-after, Ansell has also worked on several North Shore homes, including her “biggest transformation yet of a West Vancouver residence.” “Like all my clients, people on the North Shore are looking for a space that complements their lifestyle,” Ansell adds. Ansell’s portfolio is impressive - from custom residences to designing a capsule collection of pillows with Joue Design, to collaborating with such brands as Honomobo, the Vancouver Home + Design Show, the BC Home + Garden Show and Floform Interiors, among others. She has been honoured with four prestigious awards from Houzz.com in their Best of Houzz category from 2014 to 2019, 2017 Best Interior Design Firm in the Burnaby Now, besides being featured in many notable publications across Canada. In 2010, she founded Cherry Interior Design before rebranding in 2013 to Kendall Ansell Interiors - a full-service boutique firm, offering home staging, custom millwork design, construction drawings (CAD), customized lighting plans and in-home colour consultations for all budgets. “This past March, we launched a construction company to do small renovations under $200,000,” says Ansell. !

As the weather gets cooler and nights longer, fall is the perfect season to rethink your home’s décor. Ansell offers At Home a few of her favourite autumn trends to easily transform your space and enter the new season in style. “This fall is about embracing bold and strong colours, ranging from deep greens to reds, to get you inspired to add rich hues into your design scheme,” says the multiple award-winning interior designer.
Velvet Pillows in deep reds The deep rich reds will be the perfect fall indulgence to amp up your space. Opt for a velvet texture to enhance the colour and add to the cozy fall feel.
Concrete furniture items Concrete decor can add the perfect backdrop for a modern home. The industrial addition can enhance a space with its unique texture and finish
Mixed metal accessories Mixed metals are officially on-trend. Don’t be afraid to use silver and gold to spruce up an otherwise dull space.
Lamps with cone shades The cone lamp shades add an abstract feel to an otherwise understated space. Simply swapping out the shades on your light fixtures can work wonders when enhancing an area of your home.

MID-CENTURY MODERN IN THE CAPILANO HIGHLANDS There’s something slightly thrilling about unhurriedly exploring someone else’s home. What materials are used? How does traffic flow? What cool or kooky design features pop out? Which room feels the warmest? How did they get it all so clean?
“Vancouver has an amazing and inspiring movement in modern residential architecture and design,” says MA+DS founder and president James Leasure. “Our 2019 lineup features some incredible work from some of the area’s leading architects and interior designers. We cannot wait to showcase these projects to our tourgoers.” Here’s a taste of what tour participants will see on the North Shore:

Design lovers will have a chance to poke around seven unique and innovative homes, including four on the North Shore, this Saturday, Sept. 14, during the seventh annual Modern Home Tour hosted by the Modern Architecture + Design Society in partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University’sWilson School of Design. The Vancouver Modern Home Tour puts some of the greatest local examples of modern residential architecture on display in a self-guided event featuring open-house-style visits.
This playful abode was built in 2018 as the “forever home” for a North Vancouver family, designed to accommodate an open, social atmosphere. A central cooking and dining area as well as a large covered outdoor space serve as the social hubs of the house, while an unfinished basement houses a “kid cave” that has the potential to be turned into a finished living space as the children grow older. Be sure to check out the window designs which were made to maximize views of a nearby forest ravine as well as the North Shore mountains.

ON A HILL OVER THE INLET This five-bedroom home was built this year on a steeply hilled site that overlooks Burrard Inlet and the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing. The innovative design steps down the hillside with a series of interlocking forms which are at once both grounded in the hill and soar towards the trees and sky. The selection of architectural materials was influenced by the Japanese esthetic of wabi-sabi, which embraces asymmetry, simplicity, and the beauty of aging. Note also the classic West Coast architectural cues of floor to ceiling glass and a constant connection to the outdoors.
EVOLUTION IN EAGLE HARBOUR

This West Vancouver home was an instant celebrity when it was first built in 1971. It was featured in Western Living and Canadian Homes magazines due to several unique features including two bedrooms separated by a wall that didn’t go all the way to the ceiling (a smash hit for the family’s children) as well as a bathroom done all in orange and purple, the “hot bold colours” of the day. A 2019 renovation built upon the home’s timeless design, reinvigorating the space with contemporary design elements and technology, bridging the gap between 1970s West Coast Modernism and today’s style of living.
MODCUBE IN MOODYVILLE This 2019 two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 993square-foot laneway home is the first of the designer’s Modcube prototypes to be built. The Modcube concept is intended to provide clients with a way to maximize investment, provide rental income and increase energy efficiency while densifying a single-family lot. Nine-foot ceilings, a clever mudroom/ laundry room and a rooftop deck are all noteworthy aspects of this unique project which demonstrates how smart design can maximize the space inside a small footprint.
The Modern Home Tour also features three homes in the City of Vancouver. Participating homes in theVancouver Modern Home Tour will open their doors for viewing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.Tickets to see all homes are $45 in advance, $50 on the day of the event. Ages 10 and up are invited to attend. More details on participating homes can be found at vancouvermodernhometour.com.

Business Profile
Want to know the secret of a successful home reno? Just ask an award-winning contractor What do healthy marriages and successful home renovations have in common? Great communication.
Twin Lions entire crew was either born and raised on the North Shore or lives here now – and they treat their clients like family.
“A lot of client – contractor relationships can go sour without good communication,” explains Kevin Hatch, co-owner of the award-winning Twin Lions Contracting. “A contractor becomes a large part of the client’s life for a short period of time. Communication is key.”
“I think our people is one of our biggest differentiators. We spend a lot of time vetting our crews and making sure they are the right fit for our team and our clients. So, there’s that trust factor, not only with us but every person that is on-site during the renovation.”
Hatch recommends interviewing a least a couple of reputable contractors before deciding who to work with on your renovation project. “Communication starts with the first meeting with the contractor. You may interview a few great contractors, but you may get along better with one. You should enjoy working with them.” But it’s not enough to only get along with the owner of the contracting company. Hatch recommends also getting referrals from past clients about the crew and the trades who work for the contractor – and even ask to stop by a current job site.
Hatch says systems are just as important as the construction work. “You want to be on the same page. Make sure the contractor has a robust budgeting and cost tracking system in place and is not keeping track on the back of a napkin. We have substantial communication systems in place for budgeting and cost tracking, including an online portal for clients to track their project.” “The cornerstone of our business has always been relationships and good communication.” To learn more, visit twinlionscontracting.com, email info@twinlionscontracting.com or call 604-210-8435.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION ■ Interview a few different contractors to find the one whom you are most comfortable talking with. ■ Before choosing your contractor, ask for referrals from past clients or ask to stop by a job site. ■ Set communication expectations that work for both parties, and set up a weekly site meeting (whether you use it or not, it should be planned for).
