Holiday makers have a long history with Bowen Island. A hundred years ago the Union Steamships Company transformed Bowen into the “happy isle” and merrymakers flocked to these shores even during some of the most harrowing hours in recent world history. Union Steamships brought 81,000 people, just under a quarter of Vancouver’s population at the time, to Bowen Island in1942. Today, we’re facing the medical, economic and social devastation of a pandemic, coupled with the threats of a climate crisis. If ever we’ve needed a holiday, this is it. We can’t have the giant dances of the 1940s but we can turn up the music and sing in the kitchen, deliver secret Santas to neighbours we haven’t seen in far too long and have Zoom parties into the wee hours of the morning. Our island artisans, crafters and other business people are hard at work building up their stocks so we don’t even need to leave the island to select gifts for our loved ones this year. And in a year where tourists didn’t come in the numbers of previous years, where casually browsing patrons are urged to stay home, these businesses need our help and our dollars. In these pages, we have a collection of local businesses and artisans who are a part of the economic and cultural heart of this island. They’re our holiday makers. Happy holidays and buy local!
