travel bucket list? Bucket lists are on trend for Canadians. A recent IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) survey revealed 59 per cent of Canadians have or plan to make a bucket list. The IHG survey also found: • 40% of British Columbians say you don’t need to travel abroad to have a bucket list experience. In fact, 69% of British Columbians say there are many bucket list experiences in Canada – this is more than the national average. • Only 28% of British Columbians associate bucket lists with thrill-seeking experiences. In fact, the top three bucket-list experiences British Columbians are most interested in are: nature (66%), road trips (65%) and history (55%). That’s why IHG partnered with internationallyrecognized bucket list expert, Robin Esrock, to create a Great Canadian Bucket List that offers 25 unique experiences to inspire travel throughout Canada this year – and tips to make it achievable.

Rotary Club of Lions Gate Celebrates 30 Years of

Hosting the North Vancouver Canada Day Celebrations! “Over the years, we have had an excellent committee that has only changed by one or two people,” said Lehouillier. “Each committee member has their area to work on, and don’t disappoint.”

With 2018 marking the Rotary Club of Lions Gate’s 30th consecutive year hosting the North Vancouver Canada Day Celebrations, there is a lot to celebrate this July 1st! Although this annual event has seen significant growth over the past three decades, the dedication and commitment of the Lions Gate Rotarians has remained consistently strong. Local community members have grown up with this event being an integral part to their Canada Day festivities. In all of its years, this celebration has never strayed from North Vancouver. The North Vancouver Canada Day Celebrations was first a humble gathering on top of Grouse Mountain. The festivities eventually migrated to Mahon Park and ultimately ended up at the nearby Waterfront Park, where it has taken place for more than 20 years. Today, it is one of North Vancouver’s largest community events with a current anticipated attendance over 17,000 people. In recent years, the Rotary Club of Lions Gate has worked hard to make their Canada Day celebration not only red and white, but very green! With the support of its vendors, participants, and attendees, this celebration has evolved into a proudly zero waste event. Multiple recycling stations, with volunteers to assist with sorting, are located on site to ensure all waste is properly disposed. Additionally, there are water bottle refilling stations to encourage the use of reusable water bottles. The dedication and loyalty of the Rotary Club of Lions Gate members has never wavered. Terry Lehouillier and

From the initial event planning in January to the takedown of the festivities on July 1st, the Lions Gate Rotarians are involved in all aspects of organizing and successfully executing this community celebration. The recognition for the Club’s hard work has also increased.

For more information, visit www.northvancanadaday.com

Shirley Robertson, the Co-Chairs of the North Vancouver Canada Day Committee, have both been involved with the Rotary Club of Lions Gate, and this event, for more than a decade.

“In the beginning it was a smaller event and no one in the community had any idea that it was the RCLG that was putting it on,” said Robertson.

“Today we have a much more organized approach, many more activities, and a much higher calibre of entertainment.”

This year, the North Vancouver Canada Day Celebrations will take place on Sunday, July 1st from noon to 4:00pm at Waterfront Park. The festivities will include an array of local performers, displays from our North Shore community members, and multicultural food. With on-site entertainment ranging from balloon artists and a fire juggler to bouncy castles and a 24’ high climbing wall, this event is sure to be fun for the whole family. “I am just amazed and so very proud of what the Club has done for the community all these years”, says Robertson. “It is a lot of work, but it is a labour of love.”

Ready to embark on your bucket list journey? Here are some tips to help you complete your bucket list: • Don’t let the list weigh you down You are more likely to do things when you write them down, but don’t let your list get so long that it weighs on you. Start with a shortlist of 10 aspirational bucket list goals and grow it slowly over time.

OVER 70 YEARS OF COMBINED EXPERIENCE RESOLVING:

• You don’t need to spend a fortune Think outside the box when it comes to costefficient solutions to making your bucket list goals a reality. For example, if your bucket list experience requires you to travel, turn it into an epic road trip too by opting to drive instead of fly.

• Start small and local Don’t feel you need to take weeks off work to travel to the ends of the earth to have bucket list experiences. Begin with a place or activity you’ve always wanted to experience in your town, city or province, and then slowly branch out from there.

• Dream big, but be realistic Bucket lists should be personal, fun and inspiring, and realistic too. Break your list down into short- and long-term goals. Include goals that are easier to achieve than others. If they are all difficult to accomplish, you may get discouraged because you’re not making progress as quickly as you like.

CANADA DAY 2018

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Fun Canada Day facts, eh?! Many people are drawn to Canada because it offers everything from urban spaces to snowcapped wilderness to cities that seem to be something right out of ancient Europe. Canada has extensive forests, coastal towns and much more making up its landscape. Each year on July 1, Canadians celebrate the historical and cultural relevance of the country on Canada Day. Canada Day is often informally referenced as Canada’s birthday, but in fact, the country existed prior to 1867. Rather, and more accurately, Canada Day marks one of the important milestones enroute to establishing the country’s independence. Although it was still considered a British colony, on July 1, 1867, Canada became “a kingdom in its own right” within the British empire, combining the colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick into a confederation. To commemorate the celebration of Canada Day, here are some interesting facts about the day’s history as well as the country it celebrates. In 1879, a federal law was passed to make July 1 a statutory holiday, which would be called Dominion Day. On June 20, 1868, Governor General the Viscount Monck issued a royal proclamation asking for Canadians to “celebrate the anniversary of the confederation.” Even though it was an official holiday, excitement around Canada Day (and the large celebrations we enjoy today), didn’t begin until the 50th and 60th anniversaries of the holiday. On the 100th anniversary of Confederation, Queen Elizabeth II attended Canada Day celebrations.

Come groove to Five Star Motel this Canada Day!

Dominion Day didn’t translate well into French, and that difficulty served as a catalyst to change the name of the day. Many Canadians had already referred to Dominion Day as Canada Day prior to the official change. According to Reader’s Digest, most Canadians are known for their politeness, and 86 percent believe they live in the best country in the world. The beaver is Canada’s national animal, and it was once proposed that a beaver appear on the redesigned Canadian flag. ~ METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
