Vote! Do your duty!
O
our candidates and their parties are running on. We hope you have had the time to review the many stories we have published, read the many ads that all the candidates have run, maybe attended an all-candidates meeting, or at least had a debate or two around the water cooler or dining table.
n Monday, Oct. 21 we, collectively will elect a new federal government to provide oversight and leadership for our country for the next 4 years! This is no small opportunity. If it feels like an obligation, well that’s because it is. Mark your calendar now and don’t let anything else stand in the way of doing your duty. It needs to be your priority that day!
We here at the News feel that obligation too. Not only are we personally obliged to do that most important duty, VOTE, but we also feel the obligation to inform, educate and challenge you all to fulfill your obligation.
We here at the North Shore News have worked really hard over the past 10 weeks to make sure that all of our readers have been informed of the issues and the positions that
Whether this is your first election or one in a lifelong string, take the time to familiarize yourself not only with the party platforms, but very importantly, get to know the people
that are offering to be your Member of Parliament. Do they take time to listen? Are they capable advocators? Do they have personal views and attributes that you want representing us for the next four years? Your MP will be your conduit to our government -- they will represent us, their constituents, on major issues that may affect our lives for generations to come. Vote for the party platform that resonates with you and vote for a person that you respect and share your values and morals. Today we are proud to publish our {connect} special section featuring some of the candidates vying for election in our three North Shore ridings. We hope you find it a great read and one that informs your final decision as to who you want representing your area in Ottawa for up to four years. All the candidates are worthy of your full
consideration. They have worked really hard for many years to prepare themselves for this time. It is show time, NOW. The only thing missing is you. Do your thing! Inform, question, debate and then head to the polls. Without your simple act of voting, the whole democratic system is in jeopardy. The next government and MP for your area want a clear mandate. They want to represent all of us, not a majority of a minority. Give them what they deserve -- a strong turnout that clearly gives a mandate to the candidate that wins. It is critically important. Enjoy the read and then do your duty… VOTE!

Facts about me This is my first time as a federal candidate. In 2017 I was the B.C. Green Candidate for WestVancouver - Sea to Sky and came in a strong second with 29 per cent of the vote. I served as a City of North Vancouver Councillor. I’ve lived in Gleneagles, West Vancouver for 32 years.
I have a long history of community service and activism, including founding the B.C. Green Chamber of Commerce, and being a member of both the Board of Change, and the Save Howe Sound Society.
Elect Dana
Dana Taylor
RUNNING FOR: GREEN PARTY OF CANADA RIDING: WEST VANCOUVER-SUNSHINE COAST-SEA TO SKY
Q A
Locally, we must introduce adaptation plans to support fisheries, forest fire prevention, water preservation and water supply, incentivize clean technology and innovative small businesses and support democratized renewable energy.
What made you decide to stand in this election? These are consequential times. Young people are in the streets, insisting that we take real action to address the challenge of climate change. We are experiencing untenable income inequality and anxiety about affordability in housing, childcare, education and prescription drugs. Individuals are saddled with a heavy tax burden while we subsidize giant, multinational oil and gas corporations. Reconciliation with First Nations is stymied.
Q A
The Green Party of Canada has a plan to both respond to the climate emergency, and to strengthen the social contract with all citizens. The world is moving on, and Canada needs leadership that won’t tie us to the status quo. I am running to speak up for the people of West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country and to ensure that we meet the challenges of our time and prosper now while protecting future generations..
Q A
What have your past contributions to the community/North Shore been? I have a long history of community service and activism on the North Shore. One of the accomplishments of which I am most proud is my effort, as a member of the Save Howe Sound Society, to stop the unchecked industrial pollution in the Sound and to bring, what was a dead zone, back to life. Today, Howe Sound is full of marine life. Dolphins and orcas have returned, and people are able to enjoy this spectacular place. These accomplishments are now threatened by proposed projects like the Burnco Gravel mine at McNab Creek and Woodfibre LNG at Squamish. The latter has communities still waiting for a public safety risk assessment of LNG tankers coming into Howe Sound and refuelling off of our treasured Lighthouse Park. I would push for further protection of Howe Sound and stop subsidizing industrial projects that threaten our coast.
Q A
What major issues do you think have to be addressed in the next four years? Nationally, we must move forward on a real, science-based, Climate Action Plan to cut carbon emissions 60 per cent by 2030, achieve true reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, stop oil and gas subsidies and transition to a green economy that works for us all.
Q A
What would you like your legacy as an elected MP to be? As the Member of Parliament for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, I would like my legacy to be vibrant communities that work for us all, now and in the future. This means: - protect our coast and endangered Orcas and salmon by stopping TMX pipeline - more affordable electric vehicles and charging stations - efficient public transportation - safe routes for biking and walking - supporting local farmers to supply most of our food for a sustainable food system - well paid, meaningful jobs created by the shift to renewable energy development, clean technology, manufacturing, construction and renovation; communities where people can afford to live, work, play and care for their families
I want to be known for: A lifetime of community service and advocacy. Extensive experience in multi-party collaboration and successfully solving difficult problems. A commitment to honest, ethical, caring leadership.
If there is one change you could help bring about what would it be? Elizabeth May has urged us to “save democracy from politics.” I would like to see politicians stop asking for a “strategic vote” and start working to earn those votes by better serving their communities. People deserve to vote for the best choice, not the least bad option. True leaders don’t divide us by fear of the “other” side, they inspire us to work together for the good of us all. The Green Party has a vision to respond to the climate crisis and strengthen the social contract with all citizens. That will never be a wasted vote.

What made you decide to stand in this election? I entered politics in April, because the opportunity presented by the People’s Party is rare and must be embraced. For too long, Canada has been controlled by special interest groups. Legacy parties have been corrupted to the point where real change is not possible by working within the system. An outside party is the only solution.
Q What major issues do you think have to be addressed in the next 4 years?
A
A People’s Party government will protect free speech and all other freedoms guaranteed to Canadians by our constitution. Freedoms of inquiry, conscience, and expression underpin the Canadian tradition of liberal democracy. Their ongoing erosion represents an attack on Canadian democracy. John Diefenbaker said it best: “I am Canadian, a free Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship God in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, free to choose those who govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.” To uphold our heritage of freedom, Canada must remain strong. This includes financial strength in balanced budgets and low national debt. The PPC is the only party committed to a balanced budget in two years.

Elect Judith Wilson FOR: NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY Patrick RUNNING RIDING: WEST VANCOUVER-SUNSHINE COAST-SEA TO SKY
What made you decide to stand in this election? When the Liberal government passed C-69, I knew they were serious about ensuring the environment is properly valued and protected when we are making decisions on future development. We also must have an ambitious and credible approach to taking action on climate change. The Liberal government built a strong foundation to do their national climate change plan. I am motivated to work with leaders like Jonathan Wilkinson to build on this to make sure we protect our environment as we grow our economy.
What major issues do you think have to be addressed in the next 4 years? Capitalizing on the $2.5 trillion cleantech sector as we transition to a clean economy and take bold action to fight climate change so we can exceed our 2030 emission reduction targets. Continue to make life more affordable for people, especially by focusing on making housing more affordable. What areas of specific expertise will you bring to your riding/constituents? As a lawyer specializing in environmental and aboriginal law, I have significant experience working with governments and with policy and legislative development on environmental and natural resource governance. How do you find out what people’s concerns are? By engaging with people in honest and authentic conversations, whether that’s at events, on the doorstep, or over the phone. When you actively listen, people share their concerns and we can work together to find solutions.
I want to be known for:
Advocating for all of the constituents and communities in our riding to deliver policy initiatives and investments that reflect their priorities.
Facts about me I have lived in Tuwanek and Langdale on the Sunshine Coast since 1980 having graduated from Delbrook Secondary in North Vancouver. I’ve been a school trustee for School District 46 and have been active in the arts community with Gibsons Landing Heritage Society and Driftwood Players. After commuting daily to UBC for my Law degree, I established my Gibsons law practice in 1996, and was the single parent for my son since the death of my husband in 2004. I keep a small hobby farm in Langdale to grow organic vegetables, keep a small flock of hens and tend my two aging horses.
Elect Judith
What specific expertise do you bring? As a family lawyer I am an advocate ... working for my clients’ interests in court and out. I am particularly aware of the impact of underfunded Child and Welfare Services and the dreadful impact of economic distress on family relations. My skills and sensitivity to these issues can be put to good use as your Member of Parliament. Contributions to the Community In addition to law where I have worked as a legal aid lawyer, I have been a volunteer board member for the Gibsons Landing Heritage Theatre Society and volunteered for the Sunshine Coast Conservation Society. I was a school trustee years ago and worked for the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society prior to becoming a lawyer.
The Next Four Years: My focus: Climate Change and Affordability I want climate change and housing treated as the emergencies they are. After four years, I want to be able to say that in my riding, no one is forced to live in the woods or be warehoused in a shelter due to lack of affordable housing. I want to see more electric cars, more transit, more solar and wind projects and reduced emissions. Health care, pharmacare and dental care are top priorities. For families, I want to see rental grants of up to $5,000 for those with rents over 30 per cent of household income while we work on building more affordable units. And I want a universal affordable day care program in place, and financial support to help seniors to be able to stay in their homes as long as possible. And to pay for it, I want to see the ultra-rich pay their fair share of taxes, the billions in offshore tax havens brought home to fund programs, and a redirecting of oil patch subsidies to go to clean energy.

Facts about me After a fulfilling career as a journalist, educator and awardwinning filmmaker, this is my first time running for elected office. I’ve lived on the North Shore for 43 years. I now have two grandchildren and I am deeply concerned about their futures. This is why I am going to bring Green to North Vancouver.
George Orr
Elect George
RUNNING FOR: GREEN PARTY OF CANADA RIDING: NORTH VANCOUVER
Q A
ago. Nothing has changed. The public is angry at the inaction, and they are demanding accountability. I hear what the public is saying and I will be their advocate.
What made you decide to stand in this election? I felt I had to stand. The Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change has stated that we have only 11 years left to confront the climate disaster. This is not opinion, it is settled science, and it should never have been politicized. Other political parties, aware of the science for decades, have been forming provincial and federal governments while largely failing to do anything except for giving us piecemeal, afterthought initiatives - initiatives meant to placate voters and make their parties look Green.
Q A
We will do better.
Q A
Why Green? The Green Party begins with the basic premise that all life on the planet is interconnected and that humans have a responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world. The Green Party supports environmental economics, progressive social policy and responsible, accountable governance. People are embracing Green Party values around the world. Since its inception, the Green Party has been advocating for policies and laws that protect our common good. As your Green MP, I will ensure that your voice is heard and that our community is taken care of.
Q A
What areas of specific expertise will you bring to your riding/ constituents? As an accomplished journalist and educator, I can help people understand the gravity of the climate crisis that threatens our way of life. My award-winning feature documentary “Against The Current” warned of the impending climate crisis 20 years
Restoring trust in politics by speaking the truth and actually doing what I commit to do.
The Trans Mountain Expansion project must be stopped. It makes no sense to build a pipeline for a product the world knows we must stop using within 30 years. We must stand with the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations, and oppose the pipeline which violates indigenous sovereignty. Imagine how it would feel to have a government not beholden to oil and LNG – who made decisions for the good of the people, not for multi-national corporations.
I don’t trust the promises being made. We have seen time and time again that mistruths and half-truths are used to justify the breaking of campaign promises. To other parties this election is about politics; to me, it’s about our futures. Scientists say that we have just enough time to avoid this dire future if we take action now. A bountiful sustainable future lies ahead, but this election is the last chance to get there and still avoid wide-scale societal disruption. We have to get this right.
If there is one change you could help bring about - what would it be?
I want to be known for:
Imagine what our world will be like once we stop burning carbon. Then ask yourself why are we taking so painfully long to get there. The longer we take, the larger and more urgent the task will be and the costs will rise correspondingly.
Q A
Are there any areas of interest that you would like to express an opinion on? This is a chance for Canadian citizens to vote for what they believe. This election is a referendum on climate, pure and simple. The time for strategic voting has passed. If you stand with science, your choice is clear. There is only one Green Party. Elect me, George Orr, as the first Green MP in the Lower Mainland. “This is the year 2019. This is not the time and place for dreams. This is the time to wake up. Q A
Climate change Climate change is an existential threat to the future of our planet —a threat that requires real, meaningful action. This is why our Liberal government has recently announced its plan to target net-zero emissions by 2050. Our government, working with municipalities, provinces, territories, and Indigenous and First Nations communities, developed the first Canadian climate plan with over 50 measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating a path to achieving our Paris targets. Affordable housing With perhaps the highest housing prices in the country, and some of the highest rental costs, affordable housing is one of the most important issues to voters in the Lower Mainland. Our government re-established a federal role in housing through the launch of a $40 billion, 10-year National Housing Strategy. Over the next decade, this strategy will remove 530,000 families from housing need, and cut chronic homelessness by 50 per cent. We also introduced a First Time Home Buyers’ Incentive to help put people on a realistic path to homeownership. I advocated successfully for an increase to this incentive in places like Vancouver that are harder hit by high prices, as reflected in our 2019 platform. Transportation and other infrastructure challenges on the North Shore As a result of its geography and rapidly expanding population, the North Shore faces acute transportation challenges. I have worked actively with municipal and provincial partners to address these challenges, including investing over $335 million for frequent Seabus sailings, improved bus services, significant improvements to ongoing work on Highway 1 and a new wastewater treatment facility. Most recently, I announced $250,000 in federal funding for a study to develop a business case for bringing rapid transit to the North Shore.
Q A
subsequently as Canada’s Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, I have played a significant role in the development and implementation of policies that have put Canada on a path towards a more sustainable future.
What major issues do you think have to be addressed in the next 4 years?
Before entering into politics, I spent over 20 years as a senior business leader, including over 15 years as a CEO and senior executive in BC’s clean technology sector, working on innovations in renewable energy and clean water. My cleantech experience is very relevant to strategies for addressing the climate crisis. If re-elected, North Vancouver will continue to have a strong voice for the environment and environmental sustainability in Ottawa.
Q A
I want to be known for: Being a strong advocate for North Vancouver on issues like housing affordability, transportation, climate change and creating more jobs and a more prosperous economy.
Do you have the support or endorsement of any particular organizations? I have been endorsed by GreenPAC, an organization representing leading environmental organizations in Canada. In addition, over a dozen leaders in Canada’s environmental community and clean technology sector have provided their personal support for my re-election. These endorsements are a validation of the work I have done to enhance environmental sustainability and to ensure economic progress and environmental sustainability proceed together. In addition, I have received the endorsement of the District of North Van Firefighters Union in recognition of the work I have done to support the needs of key groups like the firefighters in our North Vancouver community.

What made you decide to stand in this election?
Working as senior policy advisor on global poverty reduction for the Government of Canada, I have seen how our government works and doesn’t. I am standing because we need leadership that makes choices that benefit people and follows through on commitments. I made my decision last summer when I was told yet again that there were no housing options available for my cousin who has Down’s Syndrome. The reason given - we are in a housing crisis!

We desperately need affordable and social housing units in North Vancouver. Climate Change - We must transition to a clean, green economy with good jobs. Reconciliation - Meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Health Care - It’s time for head-to-toe healthcare starting with prescription drugs and dental care. Our fight for affordability and a sustainable future means that people will be able to live and thrive in North Vancouver. Our choices are evidence-based. Elect Andrew
What made you decide to stand in this election?
I am deeply concerned with the direction that this current Liberal government is taking our country. We did not get what we were promised. Instead, this government has taken us $71 billion deeper into debt, bought a pipeline, and taken us from scandal to scandal. I decided that I could not stand idly by and watch this continue. I have spent the last seven months knocking on thousands of doors and listening to constituents. I’m hearing that many North Vancouverites are also not happy and feel disappointed and misled. What major issues do you think have to be addressed in the next 4 years? Climate change, housing affordability, North Shore traffic congestion and the economy are the top issues on people’s mind. We are also facing a looming global economic downturn which we are not prepared for. The Conservative party has a comprehensive plan to tackle these issues head on. We have a strong record of managing our government and economy during difficult times. If elected, we will do it again. What areas of specific expertise will you bring to your riding/constituents? As your MP, I worked with all three levels of government to deliver important projects to North Vancouver. As a result, all of our requests under the Federal Stimulus Program were funded, including: the new film school at Capilano University; the new Polygon Gallery; the new Museum & Archives; the soccer bubble at Windsor school; and the new interchanges on Highway 1. I’m ready to do it again.

Elect Heather What major issues do you think have to be addressed in the next 4 years?
Through my work as a health care professional, I have witnessed an alarming increase in young people admitted to long-term care homes because of brain damage caused by drug overdose. I am committed to working toward solutions to protect our youth during the present crisis and in years to come.
In order to retain families and skilled workers in the riding, I will work with the provincial and local governments towards affordable housing and safe and healthy neighborhoods here for children to grow, learn and play.
I have been living in Burnaby for 16 years.
