get to know the not-for-profit organizations in our community

A

s the holidays near, we prepare for all the celebrations and traditions that come with the festive season. This is a time of goodwill, a time for sharing with family and friends, a season for giving. This is also an ideal time for the tradition of giving to extend to others right here in our own community, those who may not have the support that many of us take for granted. We are fortunate to have access to many, many worthwhile charitable organizations. There are indeed some excellent not-for-profit organizations based right here on the North Shore. And while we acknowledge that giving is a personal choice, we invite you to read through the following pages where we hope to introduce you to a host of causes, their missions and successes. Each organization provides dedicated and much needed resources and support in our community. Whether you give of your time, your energy or your chequebook, know that the smallest of contribution makes a difference. Please take a moment to read the giving stories on these following pages and see if one of these organizations aligns with your own values, concerns and efforts. If one strikes a chord, seek them out and make a connection. You’ll be giving a gift that really matters. Sincerely, Peter Kvarnstrom Publisher

Only 1 in 3 people who experience a mental health problem or illness — and as few as 1 in 4 children or youth — report that they have sought and received services and treatment. Improved access to peer support, housing, and community-based services can improve quality of life and help to keep people living with mental health problems and illnesses out of hospitals and out of the criminal justice system.

Housing – Our Homeless Outreach program provides advocacy and support for our clients who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness. We help them access housing, social assistance or other support services. Employment Services – Whether through our team at WorkBC or through our Hope Café Blenz social entreprise, we help individuals with multiple barriers access employment. Peer and Family Support – Working out of the Kelty Dennehy Resource Centre and the Foundry, our peer supporters use lived experience to offer support, guidance, and help with navigating the often complex mental health system. Also through the Foundry, we now offer support from a Family Navigator. Counselling – At our office on Lonsdale Ave, we offer oneon-one counselling for $25 per session without referral. Education & Support Groups – Our support groups offer a safe space to share stories and listen, as well as receive education and therapeutic activities to better understand and navigate life with mental illness. CMHA NWV also brings together youth (12-29 yrs) in our STEPS program. Youth meet once a week to engage in recreation activities, and connect once a week with a youth worker.

A recent story

CapU alum supports business students with new award CapU business alum, Matthew Smith established the Smith and Walker Bursary to ensure students have the same opportunity to flourish as he did. Smith attended a private high school as a result of the high school’s alumni fund. He was thankful to receive support to pursue a great education. Smith then attended CapU and enjoyed a positive and rewarding experience. After graduating from CapU in 2015, he joined W3 Solutions, a division of Walker Group of Companies, where he is currently the national sales manager. Seeing an opportunity to align his goals with his company’s vision of using “the power of business to solve important local and global community issues,” Smith reached out to CapU to fulfill one of his goals of supporting students facing financial difficulties in pursuing their education. Thanks to Smith’s inspiring vision, support from W3 Solutions, and a commitment to give back, students in Capilano University’s School of Business will continue to thrive!

Our Focus

Our Work in the Community

“Extending a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out” is our mission. We reach out to families and individuals experiencing serious life-challenges. We channel community resources to provide coaching, counsel, groceries and clothing that supports 600+ people each month. We help people reconnect with jobs, school and wellness.

While the North Shore is known as one of the more prosperous communities in Canada, critical family resources can be scarce for those finding themselves in desperate times. Harvest Project provides a safety-net for those in need. Clients are often single parents, newer residents and those dealing with catastrophic or chronic health issues. Several thousand households are struggling and forced to go without food, medicine or dental care just to remain in their apartments or homes. Most are only one more unexpected bill, illness, family crisis or job-loss away from being forced into homelessness.

Our People

Support Harvest Project’s Adopt A Family Campaign

Harvest Project looks to more than 900 volunteers (2016) to bring time, effort and expertise to client-care coaching, warehousing, food recovery and distribution. All work together with a small staff and our board to serve clients from North and West Vancouver.

Facts

Through Harvest Project, North Shore residents can positively impact the lives of hundreds of our neighbors and the health of the whole community. This past year, we provided more than 4,400 coaching + dropin sessions, food valued at $600,000 + 9,000 clothing items. 19,000 volunteer-hours were contributed by our neighbours.

Our Focus

To raise $100 million and bring life-changing care to the North Shore with the building of a state-of-the-art Medical & Surgical Centre.

Our People

The small team at the Foundation works with a group of more than 250 dedicated volunteers including a volunteer board to enhance health care at all publicly funded health care facilities on the North Shore.

Facts

The current LGH acute care tower was built in 1961 and with its aging infrastructure and shared rooms it cannot support the latest medical technology or provide 21st Century standards of care. The new Centre will revolutionize clinical care, provide faster access to surgery and save lives.

Events

Our Work in the Community

In the past ten years Lions Gate Hospital has invested $100 million to enhance health care on the North Shore through new facilities, infrastructure upgrades and equipment purchases. In March 2017, the Foundation officially opened the $4.7 million Carlile Youth Concurrent Disorders Centre at the HOpe Centre. The 10-bed unit, which provides short-term care for young people, is the first facility in BC and only the second in Canada, to treat youth with both acute mental illness and substance use issues. Six months later we celebrated the completion and opening of the Denis & Joan Creighton Outpatient Care Centre which will improve services for the 20,000 patients a year who need supportive clinical care at LGH. In the past 12 months the Foundation has purchased more than $2 million worth of equipment including a fluoroscopy and digital X-ray unit.

Testimonial

“I so much appreciate the kindness and knowledge of the staff. When you’re feeling really nervous because of a medical condition you don’t know very much about, this kind of attitude makes all the difference in the world. Thank you!” ~ PF, November, 2017.

A recent story

Most patients I see in cardiology are pretty anxious and have a life-threatening illness. Imagine having to tell someone that they need complex treatment while there are other patients and even their family members on the other side of the curtain? It’s awkward and it is something I have to do on a regular basis. With more single-patient rooms the new Centre will provide more space and a much improved therapeutic environment for patients. This is hugely important for their well-being and for their recovery. ~ Dr. John Vyselaar, LGH Head of Cardiology.

How you can get involved

You can help us bring life-changing care to the North Shore by making a donation by cheque, credit card, online or by phone; hosting or attending a fundraising event, volunteering, including a gift in your will or making a donation in honour of a loved one.

Our Focus

To improve the quality of life for residents on the North Shore by funding community programs, services and scholarships. We manage a variety of trust funds and issue grants from the investment earnings for the benefit of North Shore residents from Lions Bay to Deep Cove.

Our People

The Foundation is a volunteer based organization. All activities are undertaken by a volunteer board and a group of dedicated helpers, keeping our overhead very low. Our Board of Directors includes: Michael Boehm, President; Jan Argent, Chris Ball, Sandra Dodd, Robert Fawcett, Najeeb Hassan, Shirley Kepper, Aaron Kuzik, Elizabeth McLaren, Tim McMorran, Alex Moscrip, Stephanie Orr, David Phillips, Kay Vinall.

Facts

The North Shore Community Foundation manages $3.2 million in assets in 26 different funds and this year will disburse almost $200,000 from fundraising and investment earnings for scholarships and to worthy local charities.

contact us

telephone 604 998 4460 email info@nscommunityfoundation.com internet www.nscommunityfoundation.com

Our Work in the Community

Since its founding in 1988, the Foundation has contributed just under $1.7 million to community programs and services on the North Shore. The NSCF provides a tax-effective means for people and organizations to preserve capital for the long-term benefit of the community. We maintain active contacts with a variety of social service agencies, cultural and educational institutions and other community groups in order to understand emerging needs. We also develop relationships with donors and potential donors to ensure we meet their intentions effectively.

Events

Each year, the North Shore Community Foundation presents the North Shore Mayors’ Golf Tournament at Seymour Golf & Country Club. The annual fundraiser has raised more than $1,400,000 in its ten years of operation and each year a designated North Shore charity is selected to receive $50,000. This past year, in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary and the 10th annual golf tournament, two charities were selected to receive $50,000 each. The 11th annual Mayors’ Golf Tournament will be held on May 25th, 2018.

Community thanks

On behalf of the Quest Food Exchange Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and clients, THANK YOU! for selecting Quest as one of your designated charities for this year’s golf tournament. Your contribution of $50,000 is a substantial donation and we are extremely grateful.

I wanted to let you know that the donated funds have been allocated entirely to our North Vancouver Distribution Centre which will significantly increase our food redistribution capacity. - Elizabeth Lewis, Quest Food Exchange

How You Can Get Involved

There are many ways to contribute to the North Shore Community Foundation, all of which are eligible for a tax receipt. Check our website for more information or call to set up a meeting. The Foundation also welcomes volunteers and corporate sponsors to help assist with the North Shore Mayors’ Golf Tournament or to serve on the Board of Directors.

One of the performers ConneXions supports is a regular participant. The first year he came on stage, he was noticeably nervous and froze. Yet, with continued encouragement and support, he has come a long way over the years. At last year’s event, he performed a solo Elvis song with full choreography and backup dancers.

get to know the not-for-profit organizations in our community

with Charitable Organizations

Our Focus

As Presentation House Gallery, the organization grew to become one of Canada’s most important and internationally acclaimed public art galleries. Now, The Polygon Gallery continues the history of engaging the public with the most visionary artists of our time. With a mandate to exhibit and disseminate photography and media art, emphasizing contemporary Canadian work within a context of historical and international art-making, The Polygon Gallery organizes national and international exhibitions, produces award-winning publications, and offers engaging public events and art education programs. Some of the world’s most important artists, both local and international, have been featured at the gallery—from acclaimed Vancouver photographers Stan Douglas and Fred Herzog to worldrenowned artists Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, and Andy Warhol.

Facts

The Polygon Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am-5pm. Thanks to a generous donation by BMO Financial Group, admission to The Polygon is always by donation.

The Polygon Gallery

101 CARRIE CATES COURT, NORTH VANCOUVER

Our Work in the Community

After 40 prolific years, Presentation House Gallery has taken a new shape and name on the waterfront of Vancouver’s North Shore, elevating a world-class gallery’s facility to a level equal with its reputation. The Polygon Gallery, which opened its doors to the public on November 18, creates a distinctive and welcoming waterfront landmark at the gateway to North Vancouver, attracting local residents and visitors to the Lower Lonsdale area. The new building provides greatly expanded cultural, social, and educational opportunities for the former Presentation House Gallery, by doubling the gallery’s exhibition space and enabling it to expand its dynamic and important exhibitions and public programming. This will enable The Polygon to bring more ambitious photography exhibitions to Vancouver, as well as to accommodate the expanding range of contemporary art—such as the work of internationallyrenowned Vancouver artists Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham, Ian Wallace and Stan Douglas—which are often large-scale and could not be accommodated in the cramped space of the gallery’s previous home. “Partnering with the City of North Vancouver to build a stand-alone, purpose-built facility with award-winning British Columbia Patkau Architects is transformational for the institution,” explained associate director Jessica Bouchard. “We are growing in terms of square footage by five times. We are going to be able to vastly expand our exhibition program, and to expand our education program to welcome more school children.” Bouchard noted that the previous gallery space was limited in terms of the kind of artwork it could display. “We actually had to close in the summer because it was so hot in there that you couldn’t put photography on the walls. So, to now be in a climate-controlled facility that’s made for handling art is a game-changer for us. We’re going to be able to host North Vancouverites and other visitors and become an anchor of the community.” Governor General’s Award-winning local firm Patkau Architects

has designed the striking new gallery building that will gleam on Vancouver’s harbourfront, rising in waves towards the North Shore peaks, and beckoning visitors from the North Shore, around the region, and around the world. The Polygon Gallery includes exhibition space, educational space, public event rental space, bookstore and gift shop, and a waterfront walkway and public plaza for outdoor events such as performances and movie screenings. It is a community gathering place and cultural hub, offering opportunities for residents and visitors to relax and meet in a welcoming and engaging environment, an anchor of the revitalized Lower Lonsdale area. get to know the not-for-profit organizations in our community

with Charitable Organizations

Our Focus

Since 1969, Outward Bound Canada (OBC) has made it our mission to cultivate resilience, leadership, connections and compassion, through inspiring and challenging journeys of self-discovery in the natural world. As a not-for-profit, educational organization, we’ve challenged over 150,000 Canadians to step out of their comfort zone and discover their true potential by participating in authentic, transformational outdoor adventures across the country. Through specialized charitable initiatives, we provide life-changing programming to vulnerable people across the country, including women survivors of violence, military veterans transitioning to civilian life, at-risk youth and Indigenous adults and youth.

Our People

We are led by Executive Director Sarah Wiley; a dedicated Board of Directors, Fundraising Cabinet and Governor’s Council; and a passionate team of 150 fulltime and seasonal staff. This year in British Columbia, a team of two full-time employees, 27 instructors and several volunteers worked to deliver over 30,000 hours of outdoor experiential educational programming. Over 30 OBC adventurous learning programs were delivered to more than 300 individuals on both the Lower Mainland and across Vancouver Island.

Facts

We all need to spend more time in nature in order to establish greater connections to ourselves, to others, and to the environment. When Canadians immerse themselves in the natural world through one of our authentic, challenging and impactful programs, the experience contributes significantly to the development of individual leadership capabilities, self-confidence, and personal and social resiliency. In turn, this helps individuals to not only contribute to their own well-being but to that of society and the global community.

Our work in the community

We partner with schools, community groups, local businesses and more, to provide a range of programming that enhances capacity and leadership skills and helps individuals during challenging times of transition. Our wilderness programs guide participants through a hands-on exploration of the natural spaces surrounding them, using the physical environment to deliver an immersive experience that aims to cultivate resilience, leadership, connections and compassion. Our innovative urban expedition model increases access to our transformative programs for young people living in urban centres, for whom access may be limited due to socio-economic or geographic barriers. Our Focus

To produce and provide quality professional performing arts on the north shore, and create opportunities for all community members to gather and share innovative programming, events and ideas in this wonderfully intimate space. We do this through artistic collaborations, mentoring, workshops, school and outreach programs, and providing spaces for emerging artists and community groups to work and play. “The mind at play is ageless, boundless. Presentation House Theatre (PHT) is a place for generations and cultures to come together and play with ideas through theatre, music and dance. It’s a great way to make friends and reach across generations, beliefs and diverse cultures -- to understand.” Kim Selody, Artistic Director

Our People

Artistic Director, Kim Selody, and Managing Director, MarcAndre Boyes-Manseau lead a small and mighty staff to move creative mountains. They are supported and encouraged by a hard working Board of Directors, and dedicated team of volunteers.

Our work in the Community

Nestled in the heart of North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale, PHT has become a neighbourhood cultural hub, providing the community with a dynamic mix of professional theatre, music, and dance productions. We proudly create and offer quality programming for families, children and youth, and adults of every age. Kim Selody’s 35+ years of experience has especially guided our award-winning productions for the very young such as Baking Time (appearing at the 2018 Surrey and Vancouver International Children’s Festivals), and Jack and the Bean (touring to Kansas next spring). In October more than 1,200 local elementary students “let the wild rumpus begin” at our beloved show, Where the Wild Things Are. PHT is also the venue of choice for more than 15 local community groups and organizations who rent our Mainstage theatre and adjacent Anne MacDonald Studio for rehearsals, workshops, classes and performances. For info on our 2017/18 season and stages, visit www.phtheatre.org

Recent story

The stories within our walls could fill volumes. History has it that our original seats were rescued from a soon-to-be demolished movie theatre in the 1970’s. For more than 40 years, audiences cheered on countless shows through the squeaks and creaks of these hardworking old chairs. Good news! This summer, we installed brand new, state-of-the-art flexible seating that can change configurations to suit the needs of every show -- with really comfortable seats.
