Get out and explore… Welcome to another edition of Explore the Shore… one of my favourite features that I have the pleasure of coordinating. Why is it a favourite, you might wonder? I love it because it shines a light on all the things that make the North Shore a wonderful place to live, and I can’t help but pause and feel grateful that I get to call it home. This feature gives you an overview of life on the North Shore – living, working, playing, eating and shopping. Maria Spitale-Leisk will take you on a quick tour of some of the different neighbourhoods that make up the Shore, and reasons why both residents and business owners love being there. Justin Beddall digs a little deeper into the local economy and will introduce us to some very unique tech businesses that perhaps you never
knew existed here on the shore. Justin will also give you a thorough overview of why the North Shore is the perfect mecca for all sorts of fun and recreational activities for all ages, skill levels and interests. Local food blogger Chris Dagenais takes us on a culinary tour across the Shore highlighting some fantastic patios for outdoor sustenance and libation. When you cross over the bridge, you just begin to breathe easier. Everything feels serene and calm. These words encapsulate why North Shore newcomer Jalaine Lewko has chosen to raise her family here. “I still am in awe that my children have this as their backyard,” says the Calgary transplant. “One day we can be exploring through the forest, collecting the largest maple leaves we have ever seen, to spending the next afternoon at the ocean, combing one of the many beaches for all the seashells.” Seeing her four-year-old son, Ty, playing and learning in a natural environment cements Lewko’s belief that she has found a slice of B.C. that is truly special.
Home is where the heart is.
Every North Shore community boasts its own unique qualities – from charming Deep Cove village, through the canopied trails of Lynn Valley, down the vibrant Lonsdale corridor, across scenic Marine Drive and into breathtaking Horseshoe Bay. Today it’s the spot where tourists jockey for parking spots, but the lower lot in Panorama Park actually holds cherished memories for Eileen Smith. It’s the site of her grandparents’ waterfront summer home where Smith grew up. “The Cove has changed drastically over the years,” says Smith, a director of Deep Cove Heritage Society. In the 1980s, the rustic flavour of the area changed as small cottages and country lanes gave way to streets lined with large homes. Deep Cove has also evolved into an outdoor recreation mecca, teeming with hikers, mountain bikers and kayakers. Social media has revealed that celebrities such as Neil Patrick Harris and Kate Winslet have also been beguiled by the Cove’s charms. An ambassador for the area, Smith will tell you Deep Cove’s main street alone, called Gallant Avenue, has amazing restaurants, intriguing shops, an impressive art gallery and two companies producing some really great theatre.
“This is why I have no intention of looking elsewhere to live,” says Smith. “This is my home.” Framed by vast forested terrain, Lynn Valley embodies a small-town feel at its core. Where Lynn Valley Road and Mountain Highway meet is the living room of the community. The village plaza hosts summer concerts and movie nights, while wintertime sees a visit from Santa in the square. Silvana Stagnitta-Francis hears all the community news inside Lynn Valley Barbershop, which her dad opened in 1967. “I have clients who are second and third generation, so the conversation is about their families and their weekend activities, from hockey to soccer and softball,” says StagnittaFrancis. “Many clients who grew up in Lynn Valley but moved away because they couldn’t afford a house in this neighbourhood still come back regularly to get a haircut and a delicious sausage roll from the bakery.” Sentiment runs high for traditional services and mom-and-pop shops that have been nestled inside Lynn Valley Centre for generations. live ➞ butcher, barber, dry cleaner, cobbler and key maker at this mall. In Lower Lonsdale a major, and perhaps most exciting, piece of The Shipyards puzzle is set to be unveiled on July 20. It will be a splashy celebration when North Vancouver City Mayor Linda Buchanan officially launches the water park in the new public space at the centre of the Shipyards development, now known as Shipyard Commons. Wintertime will see ice skaters gliding across a large outdoor rink overlooking the harbour. New tenants set to make a home at the Commons include: Capilano University, Caffe Artigiano, Jamjar Canteen, Joey Shipyards, Larry’s Market, Main Street Honey Shoppe, Method Indoor Cycling, Seaside by Executive Hotels & Resorts, Volcom, Welcome Parlour Ice Cream, and The Wallace, an eventhosting venue. One of the best kept secrets of the North Shore is Pemberton Heights, writes Realtor Gavin Hughes on his website. Team Clarke calls the area a charming enclave with a closeknit neighbourhood feel. Corner Stone Bistro, nestled in the heart of the Heights, is a home
away from home for neighbourhood denizens. Café regulars include residents who have lived in the historic area for 60 years, as well as multiple generations of families, many of whom celebrate special occasions here. Christmas is a memorable time of year in Pemberton Heights, when Santa arrives in the neighbourhood on a fire truck and visits with the kids. Travelling into West Vancouver, one can’t help but see Marine Drive is looking a little different these days. Megawatt celebrities Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel even took notice of Ambleside’s makeover, making a stop at Ancora restaurant recently for dinner.
In the summertime, Ambleside becomes enlivened through popular events such as Harmony Arts Festival and Rock Ambleside. “Harmony Arts has demonstrated the success of building something for residents and welcoming visitors to

enjoy the area,” says Stephanie Jones, executive director of AmblesideDundarave Business Improvement Association. Ahead of this year’s Harmony Arts Festival, the BIA is currently working with the municipality on a creative initiative. “Art Beat is a program that we are making a big investment in – pairing local artists with businesses to add to the Harmony Arts Festival,” explains Jones, adding more than 45 artists will be featured. While she’s tempted by many culinary offerings in AmblesideDundarave, Jones does have her favourites. “I love a Temper croissant, a Savary Island meat pie, and a Meinhardt’s ice cream,” she reveals. Horseshoe Bay is more than just
a jumping off place to an island destination; the village is a haven itself. You haven’t lived until you’ve devoured Troll’s fish and chips while watching the ferries slip away into picturesque Howe Sound. The sleepy seaside village will be a little livelier with the opening of Sewell’s Landing – a complex of 159 condo units spread throughout six buildings at Sewell’s Marina. Lewko and her son enjoy playing together amongst the tall trees at Lighthouse Park, on the pirate ship playground at John Lawson Park, and in the sand at Ambleside Beach. “Only living here just shy of a year, I feel we haven’t even scratched the surface yet of our exploring,” she says. ◆

North Shore businesses dive into the tech world ■ JUSTIN BEDDALL
What does an artificial intelligence firm aimed at pest management, a drone film business that caters to Hollywood North, and a submersible company that is changing ocean exploration all have in common? They are all innovative, high-tech North Shore-based companies that are game-changers – both locally and globally.
The North Shore economy is as vibrant and diverse as the unique communities (from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove) that make up North and West Vancouver. From industry, manufacturing and transportation, to film and entertainment, recreation and tourism, retail and restaurants, construction and trades, and life sciences and services, there are a variety of sectors making valuable contributions to a thriving local economy by creating job opportunities and increased business tax revenue.
And lately, there’s been a surge in the number of innovative, hightech local businesses on the North Shore. “There is some very exciting activity in the North Vancouver tech sector,” said North Vancouver Chamber CEO Patrick StaffordSmith. “North Vancouver has always had a strong history of worldclass technology and engineering capabilities; from underwater pioneer Phil Nuytten of Nuytco
Research Ltd, to civil bridge and infrastructure innovators Peter Buckland and Peter Taylor (now COWI). ➞ with quick access to downtown Vancouver, to world-class recreation, and to a well-educated local population. North Van’s Aquatica Submarines recently made international headlines as it participated in an epic, deepsea dive into the bottom of Belize’s Blue Hole, the biggest underwater sinkhole in the world. The Discovery Channel featured the expedition during a two-hour live broadcast that featured Sir Richard Branson, Fabien Cousteau and Aquatica’s chief pilot, Erika Bergman. Aquatica has emerged as an innovative pioneer in submersible technology space, with its Stingray 500 submarine featured as one of two submersibles that adventured to the depths of the Blue Hole. According to its website, Aquatica strives to “operate safe, robust and versatile manned submersibles for use in scientific, commercial
and recreational endeavours.” The company has also announced the creation of the Aquatica Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that will focus on ocean restoration, ocean exploration, and ocean education. Another great example of hightech solutions to global problems made locally is Lower Lonsdale-based Ecoation Innovative Solutions. The artificial intelligence firm produces a pest management and yield prediction robot that patrols the inside of tomato growers’ greenhouses using lights, lasers, chemical measurement and machine learning to detect early signs of stress in plants. The company currently employs 25 people in North Van but that is expected to jump by another 23 following a government grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada, set up to help Canadian entrepreneurs deploy globally competitive clean technology.

RVRD Cinema is also flying high. The drone specialist provides speciality filming gear and expertise to various industries, including feature films, TV series, commercial productions, live events and industrial/agriculture aerial survey inspection. “We have been manufacturing drone systems since 2011 and since then we have expanded to offer all options for filming action: ‘Russian Arms,’ cable cams, large-scale RC camera chase cars, boats, electric bikes and dollys. Our custom heavylift ‘Rapture’ drones are built in North Vancouver and are heavily sought after on productions around Canada and the USA,” explained Kelen Loewen of RVRD, who noted that the company’s co-founders, Derek Heidt and Jason Toth, come from action sports backgrounds. “Our extensive experience in the UAV industry has granted us the best and broadest flying permits available. We are a problem-solving film company who are able to create and manufacture a solution to getting the shot needed by a production company.” The North Van-based company employs approximately 16 people and has worked on a long list of highprofile films and TV series, including The Revenant, Jumanji 2, Altered Carbon, Riverdale, The Flash, Once Upon A Time, Power Rangers, Maze Runner, Planet of the Apes and A Dog’s Purpose, to name a few. “A large portion of what we film is on the Sea to Sky Highway, local mountains, Howe Sound on boats and in downtown Vancouver. Being near all of these locations is important to our business. Where we are in North Van is not cramped,
which allows us space for all of our gear and vehicles. We have lots of open areas which we found difficult to find in other neighbourhoods. In addition to the space, we are right next door to specialized shops for vehicle repairs, mechanical parts suppliers and shipping locations which make our business run seamlessly.” Capilano University is also adding new technology to its campus. In April 2019, the federal government announced $1.9 million in funding for the university to establish the Indigenous Digital Accelerator Centre. The accelerator is intended to take nascent-stage companies led by Indigenous people and provide hands-on technical advice and mentoring from established industry professionals and Indigenous elders. The announcement comes as CapU is setting up another tech hub on campus. The school recently inked a deal with AMPD Technologies, Greenstone Initiatives and Hynes Developments to operate the Creative Tech Community. CapU’s Willow building, which was once home to the studio arts program, will be refurbished and given a high-performance data centre, to create a “blended environment” for students, faculty and private sector employers in animation, visual effects, mixed reality and video games.
“We are seeing new leaders leverage the waterfront, clean tech and digital media assets already in our community. We’re also seeing some innovative ideas and partnerships coming from our local Capilano University and First Nations,” added Stafford-Smith. “Often these companies are leaders in their fields, and an important source of employment, but unknown locally. At the North Van Chamber we are working to raise their profile, and ensure that our community supports what is required to grow these companies and provide the housing and office space they need to create the jobs of our future.” ◆ -with files from Elana Shepert and Brent Richter

Mom was right. It’s important to stay active, and on the North Shore, the only thing you need to worry about is choosing which activity. Bracketed by mountains and ocean, the North Shore is a mecca for outdoor adventures, from shredding on the world famous mountain bike trails to paddling up scenic Indian Arm. Rather take a yoga class by the seaside or test your endurance and strength as you sweat through a boxing workout? No problem. Here’s a list of some of our favourite outdoor (and a few indoor!) activities for fun-seekers of all ages, skill levels and interests. GOOD OLD-FASHIONED PLAY TIME If you still have a burning case of Raptor fever and you’re looking for a game of pick-up basketball, there are lots of outdoor courts on the North Shore to get your jam on this summer. Pro tip: If you want to hit a spectacular Kawhi-esque game-winning jump shot set against an equally spectacular oceanside backdrop, we recommend Ambleside Park’s b-ball court located near the playground and skatepark. Of course, nothing says summer like a game of beach volleyball and the City of North Vancouver has a pair of temporary volleyball courts located just east of the dog park at Kings Mill Walk Park at Harbourside. Check out one of the North Shore’s best-kept secrets: Murdo Frazer Pitch and Putt, a nine-hole course nestled in nature that’s perfect for golfers of all ages and abilities. Club rentals are available, and the course is open from 10 a.m. until dusk. These are just a few examples of the variety of fantastic parks, playgrounds and multi-use facilities available on the North Shore that are fun for the entire family. Many of these parks have unique features like basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, and walking/running tracks and trails. So have fun out there – no matter what moves you. WATER BABIES This summer, it’s going to be hot, hot, hot. So, it’s a good thing there are a total of eight water parks in North and West Vancouver for the little ones to cool down and have some classic summer fun. With its rivers and surrounding ocean, the North Shore also has plenty of other outdoor options for adventure. Visitors and locals alike swarm to Deep Cove during the summer months and rent paddleboards, canoes or kayaks to explore Indian Arm and the surrounding islands and coves that dot the spectacular glacial fjord. Nearby Cates Park/Whey-ah-Wichen offers
beaches, tennis courts, seaside trails, adventure playground, picnic shelters and a boat launch. If you are in West Vancouver, try swimming at Ambleside Beach or signing up for sailing lessons to explore Burrard Inlet. If there’s no wind in the forecast, rent a speed boat or fishing charter in Horseshoe Bay. If you don’t like swimming with jellyfish, the kids will love the Aquatic Centre in West Vancouver that has a giant red slide that’s more than 17 metres tall! WALKERS/HIKERS Each year, 150,000 hikers tackle the Grouse Grind, a grueling 2.9-kilometre ascent, also known as “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster.” Novice hikers may take up to two hours to complete the challenging ascent and claim their prize: a remarkable, panoramic view of the city. If that sounds like too much of a grind, don’t sweat it. You can always take a leisurely stroll along the scenic 1.7-kilometre Centennial Seawalk in West Vancouver or enjoy the North Shore’s spectacular waterfront with a trek along the North Shore Spirit Trail that will eventually run from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay. If you’re looking for a fun summer hike for the entire family, pack your fishing poles and head to Rice Lake in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. It’s an excellent spot for exploring nature along the gravel trail loops, and there’s a dock on the east side of the lake that’s perfect for fishing and a picnic. TRAIL RUNNERS There’s a reason why some of the world’s top trail runners hail from the North Shore. This area is famous for its vast trail running network that offers routes for expert to beginner levels. If you’re just getting started, try joining a trail-running group like the Kinetic Trail Run (Intro) or MEC training clinic to give you the solid footing to get started and take it to the next level. Looking for a unique new trail-running experience? Try exploring Capilano River Regional Park, where you can run between tall and majestic Douglas firs and western red cedars as you listen to the relaxing natural soundtrack played by the Capilano River. Once you’ve hit your stride on the trails, try signing up for a trail race – there’s a ton to choose from, including the 5 Peaks Trail Running Series: Mount Seymour, Coast Mountain Trail Series and Club Fat Ass, to name a few. BIKERS With its vast network of challenging downhill terrain, the North Shore has earned a global rep as a mountain bike mecca. Not sure where to get started? Contact North Vancouver’s Endless Biking, and you can sign up for lessons, training and private guided tours so you can enjoy some unforgettable local riding experiences. If your kids are ready to join mom
and dad on the trails, sign them up for Sprokids, which offers classes and camps for young riders who are 6-18 years old. But you don’t need a hardcore attitude and body armour to enjoy a bike ride on the North Shore. There are also lots of family-friendly rides on the North Shore such as the Spirit Trail – which takes you along some of the North Shore’s most scenic places and gives you plenty of options for a coffee or ice cream along the way. Another great option is the City of North Vancouver’s Green Necklace, a 7.5-kilometre loop that takes riders on a tour past historic parks and buildings, public spaces and commercial areas. DRIVING You just put a fresh coat of wax on your cherry-red convertible 1968 Mustang and now you feel like a cruise. There are some beautiful scenic drives on the North Shore to enjoy on a warm summer night. Wind your way along the oceanside on the Old Dollarton Highway, stop for a doughnut in the Cove and then park your wheels for some car-hop service at the White Spot at Park & Tilford on your way home. If you’re in the mood for a longer Sunday Drive, cruise along Marine Drive to Horseshoe Bay and continue on the ultra-scenic Sea-toSky Highway to Squamish, or beyond. If it’s raining out and rock-climbing is your thing, you can still get your thrill at North Vancouver’s two indoor rock climbing facilities without getting wet. Adventure seekers in search of higher-altitude thrills might want to try tandem paragliding from Grouse Mountain Peak that offers thrilling descents that touch down at Cleveland Park – an elevation drop of more than one kilometre. Prefer the sound of a rushing river? North Shore Kayaks
offers lessons, rentals and guided trips to thrilling whitewater destinations. FAMILY-FUN Nothing beats the thrill of sloshing down a waterslide at high speed. And now you don’t have to travel to Tsawwassen. Just be sure to make plans for the City of North Vancouver’s Fun City Festival, which takes place July 13-14 and includes a 1,000-foot-long water slide as the main attraction, along with tons of other fun activities at this two-day community celebration. Prefer nature? Bird-watching at the 311-acre conservation area at Maplewood Flats is another fun family activity. While walking the three kilometres of gravel trails along the Burrard Inlet and marshland area, keep an eye out for the 200-plus different bird species that have been spotted here. Also keep an eye out for deer, otter and other critters. After a morning of birding, just down the street, you can visit Maple Wood Farm, which has been a must-visit spot for North Shore families since 1975. What kids don’t want to interact with birds, cows, goats, horses, pigs, rabbits and sheep up close? On July 13, be sure to check of the fourth annual Summer Family Fun Fest at the West Vancouver Community Centre. The fun-packed day features free activities, including the Ride and Slide Playzone, swimming, inflatable slip and slide, gymnastics, Sportball demos and more! There will also be live music, food trucks and artisan market. FITNESS & TRAINING Want to enhance your mind, body and soul? Sign up for MEC’s weekly Yoga Meet-Up that takes place at the MEC North Vancouver community room (212 Brooksbank Ave.). The West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre runs a wide range of group fitness classes, including Hearts in Motion, Energizer, and Zumba Gold. Interested in bicycle riding and making new friends? Lawn bowling is incredibly popular with seniors (and players of all ages) and the North Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club, which was founded in 1932, currently has 270 members

Sir David Attenborough could narrate the phenomenon: the weary North Shore dweller, hunkered down against the interminable coastal rains for more than half the year, beset on all sides by shelter-seeking wolf spiders, finally emerges for a brief spell in search of outdoor sustenance and libation. During this fleeting window, the beleaguered Wet Coaster, as she is colloquially known, migrates to the various patios that have been erected in anticipation of her patronage. There, she will face fierce competition for a coveted table in the sunshine. The North Shore’s patio season is short but intense, with locals clamouring to take in as much al fresco dining as possible before the days begin to get too short and too wet, as they invariably do by October. Outdoor dining options have increased exponentially over the last three years or so, following a prolonged, inexplicable paucity of patios, terraces, and courtyards. Happily, today on the North Shore there are patios attached to a wide array of eateries representing diverse culinary traditions and styles. A summer spent hopping from one patio to the next is an enriching way to get a taste of the flavours that are on offer here year-round, while also taking in the breathtaking scenery found at locations across the North Shore. Here are some of the best bets for seasonal outdoor options: Set against the stunning backdrop of Deep Cove’s Panorama Park, Arm’s Reach Bistro turns out some of the most consistently wellprepared, nuanced West Coast, accessible finedining fare around. The patio is a tough spot on which to score a table, especially during the restaurant’s exceedingly popular brunch service, but mid-week visits, made more compelling by nightly specials, are a reliable bet. 4390 Gallant Avenue. Garden patio seating creates an urban oasis and gives you a real sense of connection with the very produce that will populate the plates of your meal. The focus is on house-made pasta with sauces of hyper local, seasonal provenance, but there are also some great nonpasta options, including charcuterie, pate, cheeses, vegetarian options, soups, and a contender for best dessert on the North Shore, a chocolate hazelnut tart of astounding richness. An extensive raw bar connects you to some of the freshest seafood the market has to offer on any given day, while a tome of a wine list runs deep and offers the ideal pairing for pretty much anything. The restaurant’s narrow patio, while tight on space, supplies a welcome intimacy and, when paired with the assertive, sensual flavours and aromas of an ambitious Northern Indian menu, makes for a great date night spot. eat The very bottom of Lonsdale Avenue is patio heaven with a pedestrian thoroughfare concept that took hold back in 2017. Of the various patios between Esplanade and Carrie Cates, the surfboard-shrouded one at Raglans Bistro arguably offers the most unique opportunity to while away a summer evening. Beer with Bite The prevailing wisdom is that regions that produce reputable wines also produce stellar cuisine. But what about breweries? Do they have the same knock-on effect, breeding good food? That’s a resounding yes, at least here on the North Shore. Head below the tracks to Black Kettle Brewing where a dedicated food truck doles out surprisingly great dishes several nights a week. The menu is ever changing, but watch for fare like Alaskan Cod Burgers, or Salt & Pepper Dry Ribs. Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers has a full-on restaurant vibe with an extensive seasonal menu that pairs with the brewery’s ambitious beer lineup. Try Ahi Tuna Poke, Wild Truffled Nachos, or Beer Sausages on your next visit. Stellar tacos are the name of the game at North Vancouver favourite Bridge Brewing’s Charlotte Road tasting room. Knock back a pint of Bourbon Blood Orange wheat ale to wash down a buffalo paneer or jerk pork taco and then refill your growler with a limited edition brew. Newly opened Wildeye Brewing on Main Street near the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge isn’t messing around in the food department, launching a bistro that will feature thoughtful, creative fare like Wild Sole Ceviche, Two Rivers Sausage Flatbread, or Pork Shoulder and Capicola Cubanos.
