Bring 16 cups of salted water to a rapid boil in a large saucepan. Add pasta. Stir occasionally until water returns to a boil. Cook until al dente or tender but firm, 11 to 12 minutes, adding peas in final two to three minutes of cooking. Drain and rinse under cold water until chilled; drain well. Meanwhile, arrange prosciutto in single layer in non-stick skillet; heat over medium heat. Cook, turning once, until crispy and browned, about four minutes. Transfer to paper towel-lined plate. Cut or break into one-inch pieces. Set aside. Combine pasta mixture, beets, tomatoes, watercress, red onion, dressing, lemon juice, half of the cheese, salt and pepper in large bowl. Stir gently to coat. Sprinkle with prosciutto and remaining cheese. CHEF TIP: Substitute fusilli or orecchiette for the farfalle.

Their dark, striking presence dotted the landscape along Lonsdale Avenue for almost three years. But in March the controversial Walking Figures were packed up and sent to Montreal along with the red, crouching monks of Rey Sargent Park. While it’s possible the monks might return one day, the Walking Figures likely will not and some people are happy about that. The pedestrian artwork, which featured a series of tall, headless cast-iron legs, were installed in 2014 by Vancouver Biennale, a non-profit organization that seeks to exhibit art in public places. The stark and sombre esthetic of the figures evoked a mixed response. And while some argued the figures were ugly and even disturbing, others noted that art is meant to provoke, to make a statement, and to make people think. Regardless of your opinion about the long legs now living somewhere in Quebec, there are plenty more public art pieces to discover and explore. North and West Vancouver are home to more than 100 public works of art, and both offer information about all the pieces on their municipal websites.

If you haven’t yet, take a look at the south wall of the Aquatic Centre for an installation of moveable sunshades, or sit in the Big Chairs by the Seawalk at the foot of 18th Street. Look up at the Music Box’s chimney mural, and don’t forget to touch the German Friendship Globe as you walk through Dundarave Park. While you’re touching things, give Mona the Harbour Seal a rub. The bronze sculpture at the West
Vancouver Aquatic Centre encourages swimmers to rub it for good luck. Some public art in West Van is highly visible, but some of it is subtle. Have you seen the small, stone figure of a mother nurturing a child in an area of plants by the Beach House Restaurant in Dundarave? “It’s just something you kind of have to walk by and discover,” Doti Niedermayer, senior manager of cultural development, told this reporter in February for a story focusing on public art in the District of West Vancouver. “It reflects the culture of the community, helps with community identity and pride. It creates a gathering place. I think the best pieces of public art create a place where people stop and gather and look at the art work, have a discussion. It reflects either the spirit of the place or has something to say about the environment or politics or beauty, or any of those things.” Many people have seen the Spirit of the Mountain sculpture at the entrance of Ambleside Park, but do you know the story it tells? According to the district website, Spirit of the Mountain evokes the Lions Gate Bridge. That bridge takes its name from The Lions, the two famed peaks above West Vancouver that the Squamish people call The Twins or Sisters. Legend says that the high-born twin sisters brought peace between the Squamish and Haida people. The piece shows two upright paddles incorporated into the design that represent mutual respect. Between the paddles is a Squamish Thunderbird head, which symbolizes the Squamish Nation. In the background, a great canoe represents the journey to build a foundation for future generations within the communities of West Vancouver and the Squamish Nation.

Over in North Vancouver, one of the most noticeable pieces of public art in the district is the bronze sculpture of author Walter Draycott sitting on a bench at Pioneer Square (1305 Lynn Valley Rd.). But there is much more in the area, including the Forrest Lore mural in the kids section at Lynn Valley District Library and Rock Report, an installation of over-sized books hand-carved from B.C. granite and other stones located just outside the North Vancouver Archives and meant to reference the historical documents inside. Even Lynn Valley Village has hidden gems. Look up at the two-storey windows of the community meeting room located opposite the library entrance for they bear the image of the first Lynn Valley General Store, which was at one time located within feet of the new library site. Over in the city, public art starts right down at the bottom of Lonsdale and travels all the way up to 21st Street, filling nooks and crannies along the way. Perhaps the best known piece is The Big Drawer, an outdoor monument to shipyard workers. The installation features a large photo collage mural and a series of sculpted punch cards from actual workers. This piece marks the original entrance to Burrard Dry Dock and the location where workers punched their time cards.
Just a couple of blocks up and to the west, you’ll find a nice collection of artwork around John Braithwaite Community Centre. But the journey starts inside on the landing between the first and second floors, which features images etched into the stairwell meant to raise awareness of violence against women and their healing process. The piece is called Invisible and was created by artist Karen Ireland and the North Shore Women’s Centre. Step outside and exit to First Street. Turn left and look across the street to find a collection of pocket parks and curvy paths all displaying public art. Look for a bridge called Streams of Conciousness, which is meant to be a metaphor for connections with the past and the present and reflects on the natural resources and industries that built the area. Nebula Garden shows a collection of panels spotted with colourful orbs, meant to explore the idea of electricity as fluid energy. The Time Keepers are six figures on a stairway who represent local residents whose stories are etched onto the sculptures. Take a minute to stop and read the stories your neighbours have to tell. Inside the city hall foyer sits the splendid Fallen Tree, a complex arrangement of benches that pay homage to the fallen tree with its root system flaring upward toward the sky. Art in the city can be found en route all the way up to Centennial Theatre. For more information and details of routes, visit the three municipal websites.

Shipbuilding has been a part of the North Shore waterfront industry since the early 1900s and the broader waterfront and port industries continue to grow. In 2015, Seaspan’s North Vancouver site was awarded a multi-billion dollar contract to build non-combat ships for the federal government. According to the North Vancouver Chamber, because of its strategic location along the Burrard Inlet with access by rail and sea, the movement of goods and commodities in and out of North Vancouver plays a prominent role in regional and
international trade. The Port of Vancouver, which includes the waterfront industry on the North Shore, is the largest port in Canada and operates across five business sectors: automobiles, breakbulk, bulk, container and cruise. The port’s website notes that 136 million tonnes of cargo, valued at $200 billion, moved through the port in 2016. Some of the North Shore companies include Neptune Bulk Terminals, which handles metallurgical coal, potash, grains, special crops, animal feed; Richardson International, which exports canola and cereal grains and handles wheat, canola, barley, rye, flax, grain and feed products; Kinder

Neptune Bulk Terminals Ltd., says the North Shore is unique because it has such a mix of business, including tourism, retail, and heavy industry, all within or very near residential areas. She says it’s important for all the industries to co-exist with each other and with the community. Many of the employees at Neptune also live on the North Shore, including Dooling, so she says they are all invested in being a positive force in the area. To that end, Neptune invests in community groups and activities involving seniors and kids, including sports teams; community gardens; education programs for school kids, and seniors programs at North Shore Neighbourhood House. She describes the employees as “an incredibly hard working group of people,” and says the internal culture is one that focuses on safety, environmental performance, reliability and quality. Recently the company, which has a terminal and a corporate office located several blocks apart, launched a bike share program for its staff. When traffic in the area is busy, the bikes can be used to get from one location to the other, or for a leisurely ride in the neighbourhood, or out for a coffee or some lunch. Dooling likes the idea of the bike program, but admits with a laugh they’ll have to see how popular it is in the dead of winter when the rains set in. Jeanette O’Brien is the director of human resources and community relations at Western Stevedoring. She says the company has roots etched in a family culture that began decades ago. “This has cultivated a
people focus for the company to expand and grow,” she noted in an email. “Today’s blend of past and modern cultures creates a dynamic environment that preserves the best of the past while creating an environment where employees are able to flourish and grow.” The company has a fitness centre onsite, plenty of shower facilities, secure bicycle storage and free parking for its employees, more than 30 per cent of whom live on the North Shore. O’Brien notes that community interactions
are varied, and the company also sponsors the annual Coho Festival and the Mayor’s Golf Tournament. Western is also a founding sponsor of the annual Port Gala, which supports the North Shore’s Harvest Project, and the North Shore Waterfront Gala, supporting North Shore Neighbourhood House and the Learning Disabilities Association. Fun fact: Lynnterm got its name from the original Lynn Terminals facility located on the same site that served as a munitions loading facility for the Royal Canadian Navy.

If you’re strolling along Lower Lonsdale near Victory Ship Way this summer don’t be surprised if you bump into your old pal Sal and your new pal Sue. As usual, they’ll regale you with stories, songs, and poetry. The duo have become a summer staple in the area and are back again every weekend now until the end of August. Sal and Sue are, of course, North Vancouver’s Shipyard Pals. The annual program features free story-filled walks led by actors in costume, who deliver a presentation about the history of Burrard Dry Dock. “We’ve always had a good response to this program,” says Shirley Sutherland, assistant director of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives, which leads the program. “I think people really enjoy the humour, the animation, the asides, the character development between the two actors. It’s a lot of fun.” The shipyards took up a big part of the
waterfront, acres of foreshore that were blocked off from the community within the city parameters for decades, explains Sutherland. “I think people are interested in how a place came to be and what it was and what happened there, what are the stories, and what can we learn from them?” Many people have an interest in getting away from what is the present day and looking to the past and how things came to be, she adds. “They’re stories of people just like you and me who happened to live a little bit earlier who did really neat things, meaningful things, things that had impact on world events some of them, national events.” The program also tries to connect the past with the present. “Shipbuilding still happens on the North Shore,” notes Sutherland. Knowing the achievement that has happened and that continues to be built on is significant, she adds. “We have a lot of shipbuilders still living

and working within our community.” Every summer thousands of participants join in the story-filled walks with Sal and Sue, and also with Max and Molly in Lynn Canyon Park. About two years ago, building on the success of the Shipyard Pals program, the archives decided to develop another program called Mountaineering Pals, which features the same format of stories, songs, re-enactments, and poems. And this year it also features the same actors. Langara College acting students: Julia Moncs and Marguerite Hanna portray both sets of pals. “The great thing about North Vancouver is that it has a lot of really good stories, very rich stories. Unlike some communities that are essentially of the latter half of the 20th century, North Vancouver has been around and active for much longer than that,” says Sutherland, adding the mountain story is a big part of that history. In some ways, mountaineering in the province got started here on the North
Shore and history has hosted some of the sport’s significant climbers, including Phyllis Munday. “Many residents of North Vancouver are interested in the outdoors, that’s why they live here,” says Sutherland. Sue and Sal meet visitors Saturdays and Sundays (until Aug. 27), 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., on Lonsdale Avenue and Victory Ship Way (near the Big Drawer installation). Max and Molly meet their pals Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., across from Lynn Canyon Café in Lynn Canyon Park. All walks are 45 minutes long. A basic level of fitness is required for the Lynn Canyon Park walk as there are stairs involved. These guided walks are free, rain or shine, by drop-in. But groups can call 604-9903700 ext. 8007 to book a tour time. You can also look for Sal and Sue at the Friday Night Markets in Shipbuilders’ Square.
