THE AIR OUT THERE W e
m a d e
i t ! As much as I love a cool, crisp, frosty morning, I’m always
so happy to see restaurants and homeowners pulling out their patio furniture as Vancouverites prepare to enjoy the city in all its glory. As you can see from our cover photo featuring Tula House on Quadra Island (designed by Patkau Architects), we’re celebrating the outdoors in this issue. In our story on page 34, we hear from the founders of this forward-thinking firm who share the inspiration behind their spectacular structures. We also share the hottest trends in pools and hot tubs and give you a peek inside a gorgeous West Vancouver home, which I had the opportunity to tour in February. (And let me tell you, the patio area is to die for!) If you’re in need of a spring escape, our managing editor Lise Boullard shares her surfing adventures at the W Punta de Mita, a stylish jet-setters’ paradise nestled in the palm tree-covered hills of the Riviera Nayarit on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Her tales have me craving sand, surf and ceviche! Also to tempt your palate, food writer Chris Dagenais shares his take on Gastown’s new Coquille Fine Seafood restaurant, and wine aficionado Terry David Mulligan gives us his favourite organic wine picks so you can add something new to your cellar. Finally, Shawn Connor will whisk us away to Liquidity Wines in Okanagan Falls, and if you need a new fancy whip to get there, Brendan McAleer gives his review of the sleek Range Rover Velar. So grab yourself an icy cold margarita—or a glass of organic vino—and sit back (poolside) and enjoy the read!

WEST COAST STYLE COUTURE COMES SECOND NATURE FOR WEST VANCOUVER DESIGNER CATHERINE REGEHR. A n o n - d e s c r i p t i n d u s t r i a l a r e a of East Vancouver belies the atelier of one of Canada’s hidden gems, couture fashion designer Catherine Regehr. Sought after by Saudi princesses, film stars, New York’s tony fashionistas and Russia’s elite as well as international retailers, Regehr ironically flies under the radar in her own country. And yet, at this point in her life, she seems quite content to do so. “Well I’ve never really had a market here (in Canada)—don’t get me wrong—I’d be happy if I did,” laughs the down-to-earth designer who has cultivated a luxury couture niche for over 30 years. “Realistically I’ve always exported 90 per cent of my product right from the beginning, doing market week shows like Maison & Object in Paris or trunk shows in New York, and I’ve never looked back,” she confides. Yukon-born and raised in Whitehorse, Regehr graduated from Emily Carr College of Art & Design in Vancouver studying sculpture and painting, then took off for Paris to study fashion design at L’École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. She worked as a designer on Seventh Avenue, New York for Anne Klein before returning to Vancouver in 1986 and opening her own business. Regehr genuinely embodies the simplicity of the athletic outdoorswoman and adventurer; blond, youthfully freckled, she loves to kayak, hike, canoe and is a big camping enthusiast. One would

readily assume that her métier was designer sportswear! What appears as a dichotomy of interests is more a symbiotic one: her love of nature’s untamed North is channeled into textured laser-cut silk leaves and abstract flower blossoms that float from her couture eveningwear. Luxurious throws mimic the swirling waves of a whirlpool and downfilled tufted velvet quilts emulate the look and feel of the softest rock lichen. Last year a pillow she designed for Dior was inspired by observing repetitive ripples in the water. The luxurious silk fabrics are painstakingly laser-cut, sewn, and pressed by a small group of women (and two male cutters) who have worked with her for years and are as much family as they are the backbone of petite mains behind Regehr’s business. She also works directly with First Nations artisans in the Yukon area to create organic themes and pieces for her home collections. For Spring 2018, Regehr collaborated with one of her twin daughters, Eva, to design meticulously hand-crafted cocktail and evening wear and expanded on a sumptuous collection of sleepwear, caftans, throws, pillows and newly launched furniture pieces for her home collections. Falling leaf benches and stools are upholstered in techno faille, a durable polyester, and available in 100 different colours. “I’m so excited about collaborating with Eva because she brings a certain edginess to our designs that is attracting a younger clientele,” exudes Regehr with palpable maternal pride. While they both created the silk T-Neck Dress With Boa Hem, Eva designed the All Over Boa Jacket that adds drama to everything it’s paired with from jeans to evening wear. “I designed the silk Tank Top with All-Over Cherry Blossoms, which is a classic riff on the tank but with a modern twist using laser LIVINGMAG.CA

cutouts attached one petal at a time,” Eva adds. Spending her summers at her Northern home in Atlin, British Columbia just across from Juneau, Alaska is more than a getaway for Catherine Regehr. “I think that balance—time to be alone in the outdoors and with family is the secret to my longevity, and to survive, in what I always tell Eva, is a very tough business.” —Laura Goldstein

This home, designed by celebrated architect Brad Lamoureux boasts one of the most spectacular, unobstructed views of Burrard Inlet West Vancouver has to offer.
Designing this structure on this particular lot wasn’t an easy feat, but great pains were
taken to make this “labour of love,” as Lamoureux calls it, happen in order to capture that panoramic view. Completed in 2000 and described by the architect as a “West Coast postand-beam temple,” concrete was used instead of stone to give this classic structure a modern twist. What makes this home unique is the use of timber sourced from hundredyear-old trees. Lamoureux says “to find this kind of wood, we had to talk to timber brokers and seek it out. We found wood that was hundreds of years old on a lake bottom and one LIVINGMAG.CA
tree that had fallen and never hit the ground. Because these logs were so old, the grain was incredibly tight which gave it its unique look. Somehow, we managed to find fallen timber money can’t buy. You have to have a certain reverence for this kind of wood and build on this basis.” The harvested old-growth Douglas fir pieces were hand-picked, then flown in to Vancouver by helicopter with much of them laboriously glued and dowelled to give them a perfectly seamless look.

heated) outdoor space with patio seating and a barbecue area. Another unique feature of this home is the garden area built above the garage, giving the home its own front yard and extending the outdoor space, which is wrapped beautifully within a frameless glass railing. california closets interior designer Steph Pollard transformed an empty space in this newly built townhouse by installing a custom built-in wine bar for its new owners.
Dazzling Downsize “When the clients came to me they had recently downsized from a house to an 800-square-foot double-height ceiling townhouse, says designer Steph Pollard. Though excited about their new home, they needed to use smart design to optimize a much smaller area. The answer was installing custom-built efficient storage that would also maintain the beautiful esthetic in their open-concept townhouse. 15-foot ceilings in the home gave Pollard lots of room to work with when installing the wine bar in the dining room area. Closed storage, a counter that would provide extra surface area when entertaining, and open decorative storage that played with asymmetrical design were just a few of the features the clients wanted to see.

Since the space was so tall and linear but small in width, Pollard was challenged with finding a balance between asymmetry while not looking over-done with too much cabinetry. Here, she played with open cabinets and void spaces with back panels to provide depth and dimension while not overwhelming the wall. “One of the challenges of downsizing is finding space for entertaining items such as serving
platters, linens and extra glassware,” says the homeowner. “This wine bar design provides storage functionality, additional counter space and a display wall that maximizes the high ceiling. The coloured glass, walnut and resin countertop combination complement our existing furniture. The design accomplished so much yet extends only 17 inches into our space!”

Such ideas are not the stuff of whimsy but the architectural imaginings brought to life by Vancouver firm Patkau Architects Inc. For almost 40 years, the firm, founded by John and Patricia Patkau, has designed public buildings and private residences that give shape and context to our local and national urban and rural landscapes. From the Audain Art Museum at Whistler to the Newton Library in Surrey, their portfolio of projects showcase a commitment to melding functionality and beauty.

20 double garage with enough space for two cars and a golf cart—the entire community is golf cart friendly. Features also include covered 400 sq. ft. patios, Xeriscape low maintenance and environmentally friendly landscaping, high efficiency Energy Star furnace/ air conditioning system with heat pump, double-glazed windows, and many optional design upgrades. The Golf Villas are the ultimate in carefree ‘lock and leave’ living, whether to get into the golf cart for a round (a membership and a year’s dues are included in home purchases, a value of more than $4,000); to visit one of the superb nearby wineries like Tin Horn Creek, Burrowing Owl or the Osoyoos Indian Band’s own Nk’Mp Cellars; to enjoy the myriad outdoor activities on the surrounding lakes and gentle hills; or to enjoy fine dining at one of the outstanding local restaurants, the choices fit any palate, interest, and lifestyle. Over 40 homes have been sold and built in the community—the next release of 10 lots will be available this Spring for possession in 2019 and the final phases will be released next year. WEEKEND AWAY: LIQUIDITY WINES THE PERFECT MIX OF ART, WINE AND FOOD, THIS WINERY IS A CULTURAL SMORGASBORD IN THE HEART OF THE WINE COUNTRY.
WORDS | SHAWN CONNER

I T T I N G O N T H E PA T I O O F L I Q U I D I T Y , looking out at the hills
above Vaseux Lake, one could chalk up the view as just another stunning landscape from another Okanagan Falls hillside winery. That is until the eye catches, in the foreground, a man-made addition— a standing, almost anthropoidal, piece of metal.
Even by eclectic Okanagan standards, Liquidity is no ordinary winery. Besides the sculpture by B.C. artist Martha Sturdy, owner Ian MacDonald
has made the winery grounds home to other man-made yet complementary works. Inside the tasting room and bistro, the walls are regularly hung with
