acclaimed artistic director Christopher Gaze is waxing poetic about the 30th anniversary of Bard on the Beach with British tone and tenor worthy of the Shakespearean stage. Gaze is surrounded by a lifetime of theatrical ephem-
era, autographed photographs, and an uncanny look-alike ventriloquist’s dummy perched on the corner of his desk. In the late ’80s, the former Stratford Festival and Shaw Festival actor had envisioned a niche in Vancouver for Shakespearean theatre in one open-ended red-and-white-striped tent in Vanier Park with views of English Bay. “We premiered in 1990 with a risky, barn-burning production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a cast of 27, and 6,000 theatre-goers attended,” Twenty-nine years later, amid multiple stages and a sprawling tented village, Bard celebrated a record-breaking 108,000 attendees at the conclusion of the 2018 season which included visits by Amanda Seyfried of Mamma Mia! fame and Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern. And Gaze, at 67, is still taking his signature artistic risks. If you’re a Shakespeare purist, you might have missed the spectacular

ON THE PATH TO AN ALL-ELECTRIC FUTURE: THE JAGUAR I-PACE ELECTRIC SUV
N 5614; | TONY WHITNEY
OT SO LONG AGO, IT WOULD HAVE
been tough to imagine traditionalist British automaker Jaguar producing any kind of SUV. But Jaguar has eschewed tradition, and entered the market with several ultra-modern models, the latest of which is the I-Pace bat-
tery electric crossover.
Like many rivals, Jaguar is planning on an all-electric future, so
the I-Pace is just the start. Of course, SUVs have more or less “saved several luxury vehicle producers, some of which wouldn’t be around today if they’d stuck steadfastly to sedans and sports cars. The I-Pace is a dedicated EV, not a hybrid, solidifying the company’s stance on the path to the future. While Jaguar could easily have based the I-Pace on one of its existing SUVs, the company opted to give the EV bodywork of its own. Like Jaguar sedans and sports cars, the I-Pace is constructed from strong, lightweight aluminium, which helps to optimize available power. The sleek look might well have been created to make the EV an even more solid competitor for the Tesla Model X, which costs a fair
amount more than the Jaguar. The I-Pace sets new standards in the ͤHOG RI OX[XU\ 689V DQG LV DV DHVWKHWLFDOO\ SOHDVLQJ DQG FDSDEOH DV any rival out there, existing or planned. It has been described as a ͤYH VHDWHU VSRUWV FDU ZLWK SOHQW\ RI MXVWLͤFDWLRQ
