SWEET ESCAPE As
the
days
get
l o n g e r and the weather gets warmer,
many of us are gearing up for summer adventures. Don’t get me wrong, I’m always up for an out-of-town jaunt, but to be honest, one of my most coveted summer escapes is actually at home on my patio. There’s nothing like enjoying those tranquil early morning moments, listening to the birds chirping with a delicious cup of coffee in hand. I do love my little slice of outdoor Zen. For our cover story, we’re whisking you away to a tiny, remote island on Canada’s rugged East Coast where Canadian architect Todd Saunders was commissioned to create a cluster of artists residences, as well as the Fogo Island Inn. The Newfoundland-born, Norway-based architect is now known for drawing travellers to his masterpieces, which you’ll read about on page 34, located in some of the world’s most remote locations. If you want to keep it local, Erin Cebula shares one of her favourite spots–the Wickaninnish Inn near Tofino which also happens to be one of my go-tos. And, if you want to make your own home your summer escape, we’ll introduce you to Summerhill Fine Homes, which helped build a passive and sustainable dream home for a family who made the move from Deep Cove to Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast. For patio lovers such as myself, we have a fantastic feature on outdoor kitchens and, if you prefer to dine al fresco at one of Vancouver’s great restaurants, you’ll want to check out Chris Dagenais’ list of the best patios in town. And last but not least, on our back page you’ll find interior designer extraordinaire Janette Ewen and her beau Lorenzo Lamas lounging in their favourite room in their Huntington Beach retreat. You’ll also find some great, local summer wines to whet your palate in Terry David Mulligan’s Tasting Room, meet interior designer and philanthropist Janie Hungerford and go for a spin with Alessandro Farmeschi, chief operating officer of Lamborghini America. Here’s to summer!

GOLDEN COUPLE ARTISTS DAVID AND HOLLY GRAFF ARE PURSUING THEIR PASSION WITH BOWEN ISLAND’S GILT STUDIO GALLERY.
D
a v i d a n d H o l l y G r a f f a r e something of a Renaissance couple. Out of their Gilt Studio Gallery on Bowen Island, they create abstract gilded panels, glass pieces and coveted metallic
sculptures reminiscent of 15th century Venetian masterworks, using contemporary techniques. But that’s only one of their creative outlets. The couple came together purely by chance 15 years ago when Vancouver-based songwriter and architectural faux-finisher David met American ghostwriter Holly at a mutual friend’s Bowen Island birthday party. By the time they met, David had already begun the transition to fine artist with his first commission: two gilded gold-leaf panels for Holt Renfrew’s former location in Vancouver’s Pacific Centre. Eventually the couple set up shop on Bowen where David refined his gilding and resin techniques. Holly, for her part, put her fine arts degree from New York’s Houghton College to work by completely reversing David’s process for his large wood (later aluminum) panels and applying it to glass housewares for more affordable, entry-level acquisitions. Each day they drew inspiration at their 550-square-foot Artisan Square workshop and gallery, positioned to have views of Howe Sound to the east, UBC to the south and the Sunshine Coast to the west. The couple’s personal and artistic partnership has seen Gilt Studio Gallery grow from craft-show mainstay to securing representation by Yaletown’s Artworks Gallery and, finally, building an impressive international reputation thanks to installations such as the lobby of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, Whistler’s Listel Hotel elevator bays and, most recently, collaborating on the copper underside finish to Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas’ colossal SEI public sculpture at the Vancouver International Airport’s McArthurGlen

INFLUENCER: JANIE HUNGERFORD FOR THE VANCOUVER DESIGNER, CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.
A
s y m p h o n y o f t r o p i c a l b i r d c a l l s and a very early morning Maui trade wind are kicking up a competition during an outdoor Facetime interview with Vancouver interior designer, Janie Hungerford. But she’s completely unfazed. The mother of four children is soaking up some R&R at her parents’ home on Maui, but her
creative and philanthropic passions are never static. “No, I didn’t design the interiors of this home,” she laughs, reading my mind. “Sometimes it’s difficult to convince clients to experiment. I have a very strong eye for colour and Vancouver is a safe (as in conservative) market,” she says diplomatically. Janie switched to interior design at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and later refined at the renowned Parsons School of Interior Design in New York City. The Vancouver-born-and-raised entrepreneur lived and worked in NYC and in London, England before returning home to open her own practice, Hungerford Interior Design, in 2010.
“GROWING UP, MY PARENTS WERE ALWAYS VERY PHILANTHROPIC AND GREAT ROLE MODELS, AND I LEARNED THE IMPORTANCE OF HELPING OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY.”
Janie is particularly inspired by the challenge of restoration projects. Over a three-year interior renovation for a client’s 1920s heritage Shaughnessy Tudor home, she melded traditional elements like rich wood flooring and antiques into an open, flowing plan that incorporated contemporary art, cutting-edge lighting and pops of colour throughout. “Charity begins at home” may be an old idiom but to Janie Hungerford, it will always be relevant. “Growing up, my parents were always very philanthropic and great role models, and I learned the importance of helping others in the community when I was in elementary school,” she acknowledges. “I’m the same way with my own children too. We get together and make lunches for disadvantaged people in the Downtown Eastside; bring outgrown clothes in good shape to shelters for mothers and their children and even in Maui, my three daughters, ages six, seven, and four will set up a lemonade stand and sell cupcakes and give the money to a local charity,” Janie relates. “It’s so important to me to set a good example for them.” When she’s not fundraising for Kids Help Phone through her Homes for the Holidays self-guided house tours, she’s putting her energy into the BC Cancer Foundation’s annual Inspiration Gala for which she is on the planning and ballroom design committees. “Every year our theme and the type of cancer research it benefits changes,” says Janie, who is beginning to plan 2018’s glittering

Managing a home, career, time with her husband and four children along with her philanthropic commitments is always a balancing act, but Janie hopes to see younger generations following her charitable footsteps.

SUMMERHILL FINE HOMES BUILDS A COUPLE THEIR PASSIVE DREAM HOME ON THE SUNSHINE COAST

S
u m m e r h i l l F i n e H o m e s f o u n d e r Brad Jennens loves what he does and it comes through in his voice over the phone bright and early on a Thursday morning. Brad started Summerhill Fine Homes back in 1992 and hasn’t looked back since. He had just returned from travelling through Europe and found himself doing an apprenticeship on the Sunshine Coast, and it seemed like a natural next step to go into business for himself. He bought a piece of property and built a house with the goal of selling it—and Summerhill Fine Homes was born. Summerhill has a strong sustainability focus, and one of their especially
interesting projects is a passive concrete home tucked away on a small acreage in Roberts Creek. The firm began working on this project in 2015 with the owners Andreas and Kendra Tize, architect Brent Follett as well as Victoria-

based NZ Builders who worked with Summerhill on the tilt-up portion of the build. (Tilt-up construction is where the concrete forming the building’s walls is poured directly on the job site in large “tilt-up panel” slabs.) Brad believes in building homes with longevity and this one is designed to last over 150 years. He says, “homes today are built with a lifespan of 40 to 50 years and most of us can agree this isn’t a good thing. Building homes with a

T h e h o m e o w n e r s , w h o h a d d e c i d e d it was time to make the move from Deep Cove to the Sunshine Coast with their new baby, were very much involved on this project, and helped make choices about the build every step of the way (so much so that they are now good friends with Brad and do some consulting with Summerhill). They were seeking a brighter yard and a sense of community, and after a year of renting on the Sunshine Coast the couple decided to build. Like Brad, they were very passionate about the passive housing principle which the developer says “uses the energy of the sun to heat the house and the design to cool it.” The Roberts Creek home was built south-facing to use energy more efficiently, Brad says, and was designed with two-metre overhangs at the front to provide cooling shade in the summertime and allow sun to come in at a lower angle to provide heat in the winter, the idea being to capture and maintain energy. Very thick concrete holds that energy over time and retains it through insulation in the walls, floors and roof, similar to a thermos. LEANNA RATHKELLY
Most of the materials used throughout the home are locally sourced and the structure boasts a water-catch system that holds around 3,000 litres of rain for toilets. An 11-kilowatt solar system on the roof which produces its own energy takes care of a lot of the power needs of the home. A super-efficient Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) system takes the stale air out and brings fresh air in.

He and his wife moved in in 2016, and although they still have a few things to furnish and finish, they love everything about the home, in particular the sustainability factor. “On a sunny winter day when the sun pours in and the heat is off it makes you feel good when you’re not using any energy,” he says. Going green was important to Andreas and Kendra because they “wanted to make an energy-efficient home that would stand the test of time. California Closets Design Consultant Danielle LaPointe creates a seamless storage system for a book-loving client.
Savvy Storage When a client with an extensive literary collection approached California Closets Design Consultant Danielle LaPointe to create an elegant storage solution for their personal library, there was no question the books would be highly visible on open shelving. “They love their books so they didn’t want to hide them,” explains Danielle. The client’s one-bedroom condominium, in a refurbished B.C. Electric Railway substation originally built in 1912, boasted 11-foot ceilings, leaving ample space above the bed in the client’s bedroom and along the back wall in the den in which to store their books. “They envisioned something tall and symmetrical in both of those areas with bedside tables built in to the bedroom storage,” says Danielle. The result is two elegant California Closets storage systems in both rooms where the clients now have their collection of almost 1,000 books on display. The systems also include a few doors and drawers which keep clutter out of view. It’s safe to say the client, who later hired Danielle to design storage systems in their office and entry closet, is happy with the
result. After the initial install she raved that the service provided was “absolutely superb from beginning to end. Danielle was a dream to work with: professional, talented, sweet, funny, timely. She understood our needs and her design was exceptional. The installers were wonderful. They were on time and did a beautiful job for us. We are thrilled with the finished product. I just keep walking into the two rooms and staring!”

He’s just come off of a whirlwind 18-hour trip from his home in Bergen, Norway, then straight to Whistler where he would have spent a few days backcountry skiing, if it wasn’t for uncooperative weather, he tells me. “(Backcountry) is my thing now, that’s what I do all the time,” he says. Now he’s squeezing in a few media interviews before he speaks to a room of 500 at Inform about his illustrious architecture career. This work-hard, play-hard lifestyle has become the norm for Todd since a fateful phone call he received while on a kayaking trip on a fjord in Norway from tech executive and philanthropist Zita Cobb. The Newfoundland-born millionaire was interviewing architects for a project in her tiny, remote hometown of Fogo Island, the idea being to create structures that would breathe life into the small town’s economy and make it a Mecca for artists through an arts residency program.

N e w f o u n d l a n d - b o r n Sa u n d e r s w o n t h e contract, and his work—six modernist artist residences and a hotel, the Fogo Island Inn, built on spindly metal legs on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Atlantic’s crashing waves—have made him an international sensation. Completed in 2012, the 29-room, five-star inn features a heritage library, National Film Board of Canada “e-cinema” and art gallery, and is a destination for affluent travellers, including the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow. The concept of using architecture as a draw for tourism in remote locations has become Todd’s calling card. The

On the current project roster is an Inuit museum for Parks Canada in northern Labrador, a contemporary sculpture museum on the west coast of Sweden and a 15-room backcountry ski residence above the Arctic circle. There’s also a project in the North of Sweden consisting of 15 very different, very tiny buildings—a small library, a sauna, a church, some cabins, a dining hall and a spa—winding their way along a nature trail; a destination architecture hospitality project in Patagonia; and a multi-home residential project on a piece of land between Calgary and Banff that’s showcasing the work of four different architects, Todd’s work being the most Scandinavian in style. The international theme continues for Todd—his firm currently has projects on the go in 10 different countries, and he’s got a few week-long trips planned in 2018 where his firm will hold lectures and conduct research in Toronto, on Fogo Island, in New York City and possibly Tokyo. His entourage consists of his girlfriend and sometimes his daughters. “(My kids) were one month in Fogo Island with me this past summer and then they’ll go one week to France skiing with me. Their lives are so immersed in architecture,” he says. Todd’s ex-wife, with whom he is still good friends, lives in walking distance from his home in Bergen. When asked whether he comes to a project with predisposed ideas, he’s adamant that the landscape and client inform the process instead. “We do a lot of research, we understand the place and then we start making it up. is a wine to pair with those feelings? Sure you can get “sippers” that are quick and convenient. B.C. has one for every day of summer. What I’m looking for are crisp whites and lighter reds. No additives, chemicals, little or no intervention. Some may be cloudy but just know it’s you and the juice ... the way wine used to be made before they started putting lipstick on it. Best news is that B.C. specializes in just such wines. Frankly, they may become what we’re famous for. Here, three I love. B.C. rosés have gone through the roof. They have become wildly popular in recent years, which may mean some wineries have been caught playing catch-up. The first rosé that demanded my attention was mentored by Ian Sutherland of the original Poplar Grove Winery on the Naramata Bench. Those

Matt’s CAB FRANC ROSÉ has drive-through skin contact, six months of old French oak, and is bone dry, crisp and fresh. All his wines are natural. Nothing added. Hands-off winemaking. Because there’s no filtration it’s slightly cloudy, but what a payoff. Plum, apple, berries and franc! $22 at Lock & Worth Winery, Lockandworth.com Right down the road from Lock & Worth is Bella, the passion proj-

The wine I wholeheartedly recommend is the BELLA SPARKLING ROSÉ B2, which is their first blend (eight vineyards), made from the yeast deposits from 50 per cent Chardonnay and 50 per cent gamay pressings. Jay says it’s his “summer go-go juice.” Perfect for picnics, backpacks and gifts. Only 65 cases. $26 at Bella Wines, Bellawines.ca And now the red ... The best B.C. summer red. The grape is gamay. OROFINO GAMAY. Gold Medal Winner National Wine Awards. The 2016 sold out. 2017 will be snapped up by those in-the-know. Unfined and unfiltered. Orofino has planted even more vineyards to up production. Why so popular? Bright and pretty flavours with lower alcohol. Winemaker John Weber says it’s “gulpable” and “the real deal.” Pale in colour, strawberry nose, nice finish. Stays on your tongue. Highly recommended that it be served slightly chilled. It makes everything “pop.” $25 at Sutton Place Wine Merchant.

Flowy striped pants are a staple for a coastal getaway. The white and sand-tone on this CHRISELLE X J.O.A LACE-UP HIGH WAIST PANTS in Sand Stripe make for the perfect summer slacks, but I especially love the lace-up and tie details down the front. Wear them around town or along the beach! $137 at Nordstrom. TOM FORD SUNGLASSES are always my favourite, so I especially love this trendier Anna pair that introduces the top bar on a classic shape. With grey gradient lenses and a pale gold-tone metal, these are sure to look flattering on any face! $480 at Sunglass Hut.

a soft spot for Vancouver, thanks to his time filming here. Janette Ewen and Lorenzo Lamas travel and work—a lot. Their whirlwind lifestyle and romance inspired the ultimate getaway, a chic beach condo in Huntington Beach. —As told to Bianca Solterbeck “We love everything about our sanctuary in the sun, but the living room has to be my favourite space. It has a distinct beach vibe, probably because I hung Lorenzo’s surfboard over the sofa! I selected a super comfortable sectional sofa from Mobilia

Merrell and Patrick Delanty, on the project. We wanted to keep the furniture relaxed with a slight rustic, modern touch and incorporated brass and wood, with a few hints of pattern. We discovered some old negatives of Lorenzo’s father (actor Fernando Lamas) that date back to the 1950s and we incorporated those into the room. Pulling the colour scheme and the vibe from those images created a space that felt familiar but fresh. Lorenzo and I are always on the go, so having this space means everything to us. I can be on the road for as long as a month and knowing I have our little seaside escape and my handsome beau to come home to makes it all worthwhile.” JUNE/JULY 2018
