NORTH VANCOUVER STARTS HERE T
he Shipyards District Lower Lonsdale is a neighbourhood like no other—small-town yet urban, historic but modern, close-knit, and always welcoming. Centrally-located on North Vancouver’s vibrant waterfront, The Shipyards District, one of this city’s oldest and fastest growing communities, is rich with shipbuilding history and bursting with life! The area’s recent evolution, from industrial to impressive, has created a magnetic gathering place filled with people of all ages strolling the streets, parks, boardwalks, and piers, and enjoying year-round alfresco dining. With an abundance of wide-open outdoor public gathering spaces, the neighbourhood is always jam-packed with free public events, along with almost daily fun-filled activities. No invite required.
including a 12,000-square-foot outdoor winter skating rink, a summer water play area, the landmark Polygon Gallery, and the newly transformed Lonsdale Quay Market. Did we mention the downtown Vancouver views? So, grab a toque, and a friend or two, and get outside to enjoy the fresh air while supporting local businesses who graciously await your arrival. It only takes one visit to become a regular to The Shipyards District. The constant evolution of this vibrant ‘hood guarantees the consistent return of locals and visitors eager to see what’s new, what’s on, and, what’s next.
As the North Shore’s downtown, this waterfront neighbourhood’s walkability score is off the charts. The Shipyards District has been designed as a complete community where everything you need, or need to do, is within a 10-minute walk. A glance in any direction, including up, reveals an abundance of shops and services—several hundred in fact. The local independent small business owners of the area’s eateries, breweries, salons and spas, clothing and housewares shops, galleries, and services, are the heart of this thriving community, and work hard to keep their doors open. All of this is further complemented by some serious arts, culture, and community services

“As the only history museum on the North Shore, MONOVA’s role in the community as a vibrant and welcoming community hub is strengthened by the Friends Society’s members and donors,” noted John Gilmour, President of the Friends Society. “North Vancouver has a rich and diverse history with many voices, stories and perspectives. Museums and archives help us value and understand the places where we live, work and visit. They help us connect and form a sense of identity which is a foundation for future generations.” The Friends Society supports MONOVA’s efforts to transform the way people experience North Vancouver’s stories through innovative programming, including the authentic sharing of Indigenous knowledge and First Peoples Principles of Learning, interactive exhibits and community outreach.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED: Anyone can show their support by purchasing a Friends Leadership Circle Membership. Members enjoy a full range of benefits including an annual museum pass and partial tax receipt. Donations can be made on-line at monova.ca/friends
