In the true spirit of the season, the Festival’s “Forest of Miracles” calls out the better angels in all of us. Sponsored and decorated by families, community groups and businesses, the Festival’s Christmas trees on beautiful Dundarave Beach have raised over $250,000 since 2008 for the Lookout Society’s North Shore Shelter. West Vancouver’s firefighters deserve special mention for their efforts in planting this forest and supporting the Shelter. The Lookout Emergency Aid Society has used this money to support essential services for the homeless, doubling the transitional services it provides to the most vulnerable members of our community. THE GIFT OF TRADITION The holiday season is built on tradition: family gatherings, breaking bread, and decorating our homes, all in the interest of carrying on what those before us have done. Restaurateurs Antonio and Edith Corsi, from the North Vancouver culinary institution Gusto di Quattro, know a thing or two about tradition. The couple were among the first to bring handmade Italian pasta to Metro Vancouver when they opened in 1981. We go inside their beloved restaurant to see what a planned move will mean for their longtime location at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue. Award-winning writer Eve Lazarus, whose fascinating book Cold Case Vancouver is a must-read for those who enjoy local crime history (who doesn’t?), writes about a wildly unique North Shore home that completely broke with tradition with its nod to the Googie style – 1950s architecture influenced by car culture, jets and the Space Age. Our Marine Drive feature home, by builder Paul Fedusiak from Goldwood Homes and designer Craig Chevalier, is the kind of home traditional spy character James Bond would appreciate – a classic-yet-contemporary home with touches of unexpected adventure. This issue includes vibrant West Vancouver artist Sharon Quirke, and influencer Treana Peake, whose tireless philanthropic work was inspired by the support her own family received from an anonymous donor when she was a child. Meanwhile, West Vancouver kiteboarding whiz Jack Rieder is featured this month, taking us to the wild waters of Squamish, where the 16-year-old is carving out his own way and potentially helping launch a new sport tradition on this side of the water. It wouldn’t be a holiday issue without the classic gift guide. We hope there’s an item or two that inspires your last-minute shopping, or helps you craft your wish list for next year. A year sounds like far off, but in modern life, when everything feels like it’s on fast-forward, 365 days can go by in what seems like a heartbeat. This hectic pace makes it all the more important, it seems to me, to take the time to slow down when we can – to savour the moments together and appreciate our traditions and the loved ones we share them with. Happy Holidays!

teaching career for more than 30 years. During that time, countless private and corporate clients have installed her work in their homes and offices. The renowned Art Works Gallery in downtown Vancouver has proudly represented her. And perhaps most notably, she’s had the distinct honour of exhibiting in the Chelsea District, NYC, to commemorate 9/11, as well as the Northwest Territories to celebrate the birth of Nunavut. WEST VANCOUVER artist Sharon Quirke’s abstract landscapes are layered works with vibrant tones.
Armed with these reference materials, she heads into the studio and starts composing a gestural outline before grounding the canvas with her ever-present “earth colour,” yellow ochre. After that, she layers on a multitude of vibrant colours with a variety of brush sizes. “That’s when the conversation begins,” she says. “I put my recordings away, out of sight and just start feeling my way through. NATURAL WONDER THE NORTH SHORE’S JACK RIEDER IS A KITEBOARDING WHIZ

kiteboarding phenom Jack Rieder is dazzling spectators and garnering the hardware to prove it. The 16-yearold, who began kiteboarding just two
years ago, won the Canadian junior freestyle and international junior open competitions in August, while also picking up a pair of silver medals in senior men’s events, proving he’s one to watch on the water. Rieder’s career in kiteboarding began just two years ago, while sailing in Squamish he saw a group of kiteboarders riding the waves with large power kites guiding them on their boards. “They were going a whole lot faster and jumping,” Rieder told the North Shore News after his win in the summer. “It just looked way more exciting.” Rieder, who grew up racing sailboats, combined his knowledge of how the wind behaves and innate athletic ability to progress from beginner to elite level competitor in a two-year time span. Once he’d established his basic competence, it was on to the next challenge – developing and practising tricks. Encouraged by older kiteboarders within the tightly knit Squamish community, Rieder entered his first junior competition in 2015, putting the world on notice by taking second place in freestyle. He followed that up with his first place finish at the Canadian Junior Nationals in August this year, and then moved up to the Open competition where he took second place on the same weekend. His approach to learning new tricks and moves involves a lot of study. “I start by watching kiteboarding tricks on the Internet and then practise a routine on my backyard trampoline with a rope attached to a swing set,” he says. “Before trying a new trick, I will imagine the body motion it requires.

A third fire pit on the property is located close to the water, near the crane – which, aside from moving jet skis, can lift small boats out of the water for seasonal storage at the rear of the property. Due to the home’s setting atop a bluff and the proximity to the ocean, the project was a challenge, said Fedusiak. But the location and the design combined to create a stunning home. “Architecturally, it’s an amazing, amazing house. When you’re in it, it’s kind of like you’re floating on the water.” Fedusiak and his team at Goldwood worked with Craig Chevalier, a local designer and longtime collaborator. The duo meet with the client to help determine “what will ultimately benefit the owner the best.” “At the end of the day, it’s the owner’s house, the owner’s decision,” said Fedusiak. “We guide them

through the process. We’re involved from the get-go. That ultimately gives you the nicest product from a cost perspective and from a design perspective. Fedusiak has the years of experience to know: he’s been building high-end homes since 1986, having caught the building bug early in life. “My father was a builder, and I always wanted to build high-end product. That’s been my dream, ever since I was a kid.” His passion for the business has served him well – most of his business is from returning customers. “There are members of the same family that we’ve built for, and we continuously build for our clients on a regular basis. Most of our business is word-of-mouth.” West Vancouver Realtor Malcolm Hasman, who sold the home, notes its striking, unique beauty. “This home is an architectural masterpiece with an expansive floor plan offering an indoor-outdoor lifestyle like no other. It is truly one of the most spectacular waterfront homes I have ever sold in West Vancouver,” he says.

BLENDING SCIENCE AND DESIGN IN MODERN HOME THEATRES
IT’S THE GOLDEN AGE OF CINEMA ALL OVER AGAIN – THIS TIME, without a box office, long lineups or noisy neighbours two rows back. The demand for high-end home theatres and media rooms reflects not just the evolution of audio and visual technology, but the timeless nature of North America’s love for the silver screen.

ou look back to the ’50s and the ’60s and people gathered around their little Magnavox TVs in the family room together – on a Saturday night you might dance to a
show that was on, or sit and watch together as a family,” notes Hal Clark with Commercial Electronics. “There was an important social aspect to entertainment.” The modern version is functionally the same, but with an eye to
every single detail of the experience, requiring a collaboration between not just technology specialists but, in many cases, contractors and architects. But it’s not just Hollywood blockbusters people want to enjoy at home. The gaming industry is huge, Clark adds; for other clients, it may be karaoke or major sporting events that are a draw. Either way, the end result is an experience that can be incredibly immersive – new audio technology means that a helicopter buzzing by on screen can sound like it’s passing 10 feet behind you, or over your head, depending on what the director wants. “It’s really taking the experience to a whole new level,” says Clark. “It can sound just like being in the best cinema; frankly, it can sound better than that. We design around not just the technology but the way in which the client is going to use that space, what their needs are.” Those needs – and expectations – continue to grow as the technology does, notes Mike Chorney of La Scala Integrated Media. “The real box office will always do well, but the experience of having this kind of theatre and media space in your home is really incredible and increasingly in demand,” he says. In some cases, that may mean a strong focus on the visual appearance of the space if design and décor is important, or it could be special modifications, such as a golf or hunting simulator for use in a full entertainment room. IT’S NOT JUST movies that are making the theatre room a special place to gather – gaming and major sporting events are also draws.
Regardless, there’s no denying that these systems require knowledge and experience that goes beyond the weekend hobbyist. “Experts (working in this industry) are going to have the training needed to make all these different components that are necessary in a media room or a home theatre, such as projectors, A/V receivers, lighting or window coverings, work together flawlessly while being used at

who did something that we now take for granted? Like the individual who wrested a dirt-covered tuber from the anxious snout of a voracious pig and gave us what we know as the truffle, for instance? In the case of pasta, we still have an opportunity to extend our gratitude
directly. In fact, much of Vancouver owes a debt to Antonio and Edith Corsi, a couple that is arguably among the very first to purvey the sort of authentic, handmade Italian pasta that we consider a dining staple in our city today. When the Corsis launched their original restaupart of our culinary landscape. In fact, in order to realize his culinary vision for honest and accessible Italian fare, Antonio had to head down to Los Angeles to secure a pasta machine because there was simply no such thing available on the local market.

COCKTAIL HOUR
A
s we find ourselves in the heart of the rainy season and head towards the holidays, it’s increasingly likely that we’ll find ourselves in need of a warming, seasonal cocktail. Let’s face it, Baileys and
coffee is pretty old-school and uninspired. Instead of going in that sort of traditional direction, we checked in with a couple local experts to fix us up a little somethin’ to stave off any cold, blustery weather or holiday blues. Dave Warren is the bar manager at The Salted Vine Kitchen + Bar in Squamish, the new hotspot from Araxi veterans chef Jeff Park and restaurant director/sommelier Pat Allan. When heading there to tuck into the restaurant’s seasonal, organic and sustainable, Pacific Northwest-inspired dishes, Warren recommends you start your night out (or finish it off) with his “warm and welcoming Scottish Apple Toddy.” Made with blended scotch whiskey, a splash of fresh lemon juice, and house-made winter spice syrup, it’s topped off with hot apple cider and a classic Islay peaty single malt scotch. Sounds like a holiday party in a glass! Perhaps it’s a little too wintery out there though, and you’d prefer to craft your own winter cocktail at home. We talked Vancouver barman Shaun Layton, who just wrapped up a couple very successful tenures at Vancouver’s Juniper and L’Abattoir, into creating a warming seasonal cocktail especially for North Shore Living readers, featuring a spirit from the North Shore’s very own Sons of Vancouver Distillery. Here’s

with lemon risotto or a salad of arugula, pine nuts, goat cheese and pear poached in Pinot Grigio. The business is still a family-run operation; Edith operates the front-of-house during the day, Antonio divides his time between the Whistler incarnation of Quattro and the original North Shore location, and their son, Patrick, manages the latter in the evenings. The family has witnessed some of the original Trattoria clientele transform into parents and even grandparents who now introduce new generations of regulars to Gusto. As part of its continued program of evolution and bid to secure its place in the traditions of future diners, Gusto di Quattro will relocate temporarily in late 2017 as the building story edifice. Gusto di Quattro will eventually return to its rightful spot on Lower Lonsdale in a refreshed, larger space upon completion of construction.

STYLE AND PERFORMANCE

WORDS | BRENDAN MCALEER
t the intersection of performance and refinement, we find the sport luxury coupe. Long the province of the European marques, these two-door boulevardiers represent a perfect trifecta of power, style and comfort. They’re not just vehicles designed to coddle us on long road trips, but machines designed to set the senses alight. However, it’s not just BMW and the like producing the best two-door options on the market these days. The Japanese broke into the luxury game more than a quarter century ago, and now field a couple of of cutting edge coupes that are equal to the task. Outrun the winter storms in leather-lined comfort, then wind out the looping low road towards the warmth of sunnier climes. Time for a little vacation from the everyday?

The cask-strength F models are considerably more potent, receiving beautifully made engines, track-focused performance, and the best seats in the business. While the competition turns to turbocharging as a way to provide torque and meet emissions, Lexus champions the purity of the naturally-aspirated engine. The RC-F’s 5.0L V8 makes a healthy 467hp, but it’s no grunting Mustang. Rather, its impeccably smooth engine spins towards redline with crystalline perfection while the eight-speed automatic never misses a beat.
2017 INFINITI Q60 RED SPORT
More organic in its silhouette than the deeply slashed and angular competition, Infiniti’s top-line coupe is practically liquid in its design. The shape flows backwards from the standout grille, kinking back only at the C-pillar with Infiniti’s new signature styling element. It looks great, and things get even better as you start to notice the little details alerting you to the beast that lurks beneath. Red-painted brake calipers nestle beneath staggered 19” alloys, and subtle badges alert the driver that this is the fiercest Infiniti ever produced. referring to it either as the helicopter house, the airplane house, or the Jetson’s house because it appeared to have wings. Even though the house was only there for 11 years, it seems to have resonated with everyone who saw it. “I lived on the same street as the Switzer house,” recalls John Oberhoffner. “I was eight and I cried when they tore it down.”
