LIVING THE DREAM “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt Perhaps no other development says as much about where the North Shore is going than the ongoing revitalization of Lower Lonsdale. The Polygon Gallery, which is currently under construction, is the culmination of the move toward creating a hub for community, arts, and commerce on this side of the water. Formerly the Presentation House Gallery, the new anchor attraction will open next fall and bring even more vibrancy to Lower Lonsdale, which is already buzzing with eateries, shops and people. Writer Jessica Barrett talks to the people behind the project about what to expect when the doors open to the worldclass gallery space. Meanwhile, The Village at Park Royal opened the doors on yet another hip Vancouver boutique; this time Oak + Fort brings its sleek designs to a local retail hot spot that is a magnet for designer shops that want to reach out to the many savvy, stylish North Shore shoppers. Speaking of fashion, we deliver style inspiration for upcoming parties and galas for women and fall fashion must-haves for men. In this issue, food writer Chris Dagenais and photographer Jennifer Gauthier take us to Faizal Kassam’s Terroir Kitchen – the same location where he started his culinary career many years ago as a dishwasher when it was La Regalade. We also explore the beauty of bourbon and get you ready for Cornucopia, Whistler’s pre-eminent food and drink festival. This issue looks at the stunning paintings of artist Lyza Delmar-Gustin, who unearths the many layers of lush West Coast landscapes. West Vancouver’s Timea Hynes opens the doors to her Kerr Construction and Design-built home – a project that’s enabled Hynes to add personal touches to her dream home. Living the dream – that’s what this issue is all about; whether it’s taking photographs with professional instructionors in Punta Mita, Mexico, finding some calendar-worthy firefighters at your front door (see Kate Zimmerman’s column), or discovering the perfect wooden table for you and your family to gather around at dinner time. I hope you enjoy this dreamy edition of North Shore Living.

CHANEL EXPANDS AT HOLT’S T h e r e c e n t l y e x p a n d e d CHANEL boutique at Holt Renfrew offers Canada’s only fine-jewelry boutique from the iconic French luxury brand. It is divided into two main areas: one dedicated to fashion creations from Karl Lagerfeld, including readyto-wear, handbags, shoes and accessories, and the other introducing – for the first time in Canada – the world of watches and fine jewelry. The expanded boutique is located inside Holt’s at the Dunsmuir Street entrance. Like all Chanel boutiques across the globe, the interior was conceived by New York-based architect Peter Marino. The boutique’s decor draws inspiration from Coco Chanel’s Parisian apartment on 31 rue Cambon, combining intimacy and refinement into each of the defined rooms that reflect the characteristic chic of Chanel. chanel.com

A MINIMALIST’S DREAM M i n i m a l i s t s t y l e l o v e r s were likely rejoicing with the August opening of OAK + FORT at The Village at Park Royal. The fashion-forward Vancouver retailer Oak + Fort is yet another boutique setting up shop at the ever-expanding shopping mecca in West Vancouver. The line Oak + Fort quickly gained ground as a favourite for those seeking its perpetually cool, effortless esthetic since launching in 2010. Oak + Fort is known for its collection of uncomplicated garments that reflect a timeless design philosophy that extends to clothes and accessories for both men and women, ranging from casual T-shirts to elegant coats and tailored trousers. The bright, almost 2,500-square-foot retail space was created using materials such as black fabric, white Corian and oak, and concrete flooring. Along with a wide assortment of the brand’s clothes, the new store includes an exclusive selection of housewares, which the company calls a natural progression of the Oak + Fort brand. oakandfort.ca

the clean lines of a contemporary design with classic-yet-comfortable grace. The company works on about two dozen projects each year, running the spectrum from home renovations to new home building projects. In this case, a much older home on the property was completely replaced, which provided the opportunity to capture more of the view. “The original home here didn’t really take advantage of the natural environment, so we were able to create a footprint that would do that,” he said. “It’s such a stunning view, so you want to really maximize that.” That desire to capture the outdoors appears throughout the house: a corner “window” and sliding door “walls” that completely open up to create walk-through spaces to outdoor balconies; covered patio areas with fireplaces and lighting for year-round use; and waterfall features on the outdoor pool that create a white-noise that blocks traffic noise from Marine Drive. “It really balances that indoor-outdoor living, which expands the space. You can go outside in November and enjoy an evening on the

porch where it’s still cosy and comfortable. In the summer, you can use the pool and walk right back in.” Kerr notes other highlights of the home such as a spacious wine cellar, a home theatre room with a stretched-fabric ceiling for backlighting, and a bathroom/ change room space with easy access to the pool. Ask Hynes about her favourite space in the house and she’ll answer with a laugh: the master bedroom ensuite. “That’s definitely my favourite — I’m so happy with the way it turned out,” she says. “Every time I walk in there, I think, oh, beautiful. It works.” And that’s really what it’s all about, says Hynes — being able to live in and enjoy your home. “I’ve lived in a 12,000-square-foot house and realistically we used about 3,000 square feet of it — if you design it right, you create that liveability in every space, in every room. I think we did that here. From the ensuite to the living room, the movie room, the indoor/outdoor — it’s so liveable.” For more on Kerr Construction and Design, see kerrconstruction.ca.

1

For a contemporary feel,

opt for quartz countertops.

Quartz is still a natural stone product with a bit of treatment,

which enables you to get the specific colour and/or texture you want. It’s a versatile product with a sleek, clean feel of quartz that can still work in a traditional home and a more modern one. Quartz is by far the countertop of choice for the clients we work with.

2

Add a hit of texture to the space with a wood butcher block counter. Mix and match your countertops with engineered stone on

the main part of the kitchen and a wood island just to make the kitchen more interesting and to add a little bit of warmth. With the quartz countertops, there are a lot of cold hard surfaces, so bringing a bit of wood into the kitchen can soften and warm the space.

3

Try a unique countertop material like concrete – for a modern, industrial feel – or Corian or Avonite, which are brand

names for materials that are composed of two main ingredients: natural mineral filler and a resin binder. These products feel softer to the touch than stone and are incredibly durable. A gouge in the counter can be filled and repaired and the nice thing about that product is the seams are invisible because the plastic melds together. You can even make a sink out of the same material.

4

Expect to invest in countertops when it comes to a kitchen build or reno. Whichever product you choose – whether

it’s solid granite, a partial man-made, or a full manufactured slab – the countertop is an investment that designers and their clients must plan for. Also, when it comes to the shape of countertop, we like a square edge – so nothing carved. (No ornate Donald Trump-style kitchens on our watch, people!)

5

Keep it light.

Whites, cool greys and other soft shades are

ideal when it comes to countertops. We prefer a bright kitchen in

general – a space in the home where family can gather, a happy space

Since February, the former technical writer-turned-publisher has been living a jet-set life of book launches and events throughout the U.S. and Canada in support of the project she co-edited, William Krisel’s Palm Springs: The Language of Modernism. nterest in the book – a photographic ode to the American architect’s mid-century modernist designs – has gone well beyond Creighton’s expectations. Although a pro-

lific architect who produced more than 40,000 units, most notably those found throughout California’s Coachella Valley, Krisel’s work never received the attention garnered by his peers, West Coast modernist superstars such as Richard Neutra, E. Stewart Williams, William Cody and Arthur Erickson. Creighton worked with Krisel, now in his 90s, to research the book and attributes his relative anonymity to his preference for working with an unglamorous medium: tract housing. “When he began, tract housing wasn’t even considered architecture,” she explains. Compared to his

contemporaries, who focused on custom homes that easily garnered attention, Krisel’s passion was in applying modernism to easily replicated affordable houses that were the pinnacle of the post-war American dream. “His true influence was embracing the modernist philosophy: that modernism should be accessible to everyone, not just the privileged class; that it was possible to do really great design for everybody if you were smart about it.” The results are a far cry from the ticky-tacky boxes that, as American folk singer Pete Seeger lamented, “all looked just the same.” By rotating homes on the lots and producing eight distinct elevations, Krisel created varied streetscapes in planned communities like Twin Palms in Palm Springs. “When people were buying them back in the

A licensed landscape architect as well, he ensured his vision didn’t stop at the door. A product of the post-war suburb of Don Mills, Ont., Creighton says investigating Krisel’s designs has her looking back on designs of her childhood era with a new perspective – and she suspects she’s not alone. “Certainly for baby boomers many of us are now revisiting those structures from the ’50s, where some of us grew up, with fresh eyes. While imbibing fashions ebb and flow as years go by, there’s something to be said for the classics never going out of style. We’re talking bourbon here, and while the corn-based, oak-aged spirit has been around a couple of centuries now, it’s never been more popular. Whether in cocktails or on its own, maybe served with an ice cube or two, bourbon is currently enjoying a well-deserved spotlight. We asked him for his favourites, and he kindly obliged – first recommending Eagle Rare Single Barrel Straight Bourbon, with its notes of toffee, orange peel, candied almonds and leather. Next up was Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, laden with dark fruit, vanilla and a good spike of cinnamon. Finally, his top trio was rounded out with a rarity: Buffalo Trace’s Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon, a full immersion of orange peel, dates, roasted hazelnuts and tobacco. While all bourbons are served as singles or doubles (Murl also recommends an ice cube in them to open up all of those delicious flavours), guests can also do a bourbon flight, three one-ounce pours, should a sense of adventure be in play. Of course, you can always stock up your home bar. The B.C. skiers,

Whistler

Blackcomb offers the chance to fulfil a dream of lofty heights and virgin snow. Ninety per cent of the world’s heli-skiing takes place in British Columbia, the sport’s birthplace. At the heart of the industry is Whistler

Blackcomb, which offers a relative rarity in the world of heli-skiing: day trips. “I’d say it (Whistler Blackcomb) is the capital of day heli-skiing,” said Mike Sadan, general manager of Whistler Heli-Skiing. While most heli-skiing options come in week-long packages at other resorts, skiers at Whistler Blackcomb can board a chopper in the morning and be back in time for an après-ski beer or cocktail and dinner.

MAIN PHOTO: ERIC BERGER, INSET: ERIK GRAHAM

Day-trips “allow people with family and kids to get the best of both worlds, to go on that ski vacation and get that heli-sking in,” Sadan said. “And if you’re going to heli-ski for one day, it’s going to be more affordable than if you have to commit to a week. And for some folks, it’s accessible because they just don’t have the physical energy to heli-ski for a week, but they’re capable of doing it for a day.”

On the day of the actual heli-skiing, skiers meet the guide team in the village and take a shuttle to the heli-port, about 12 minutes north of Whistler. Prior to takeoff, a training component covers companion rescue for avalanches, equipment, helicopter orientation and landing protocol, and guidelines on skiing together in the mountains. The day’s longest flight is from the heliport into the mountains, usually a 12-minute journey. A guide, certified by either the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides or the Canadian Ski Guide Association, accompanies the ski party. Three different packages are tailored to the level and ability of the skier. The Classic Package, for the intermediate or advanced skier, is a three-run package and accom-

“We try to align people of similar ability and interests in the same group.” Most of the skiers are typical of people visiting the resort — destination skiers on vacation from another part of the world, and not just there for the weekend or a day. Although there are some of those, too, Sadan says. “Heli-skiing is still such a dream in Europe, particularly in Germany, Austria — those countries are always a strong demographic for us. The U.S. market is also a very strong market, and getting stronger, I’d say rebounding because of the currency exchange.” Some skiers come for the open glaciers and untracked snow, some for the otherwise-inaccessible backcountry wilderness, some for the novelty of the ride.

Two Important Steps to Get Winter Ready On the North Shore we are blessed with abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. Getting up into the snow is a great way to make the most of the winter season. Ensuring a great time in the snow, though, does require a bit of preparation. We went to a key authority on winter fun, Grouse Mountain’s Snow School and Attractions Director, Toby Barrett, to get the inside scoop on how to prepare to make the most of what is expected to be a big snow winter.

Step 1 - Get Snow Fit

Step 2 - Gear Up

While fitness is great for general health, skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers must have good foundational fitness to enjoy a day on the mountain and to avoid aches, pain or injury. Grouse Mountain’s Toby Barrett suggests starting your fitness regime 6-8 weeks ahead of getting on the snow and has identified three main areas to focus on: flexibility, core strength, and strength to support key joints (especially knees and hips).

To really enjoy a season on the mountains you need well-functioning, comfortable gear that helps to maximize your abilities.

1 Flexibility – Get limber!

“Start with an effective warm-up, of 10-20 minutes of light cardio such as a gentle run or spin on a bike. Follow the warm-up with 10-20 minutes of stretching that includes the whole body and focuses on the lower body. Move gently into each stretch and remember to hold it for at least 45 seconds” suggests Barrett.

2 Core Strength – Absolutely!

“Two of the most important skills involved in skiing and snowboarding is balance and timing & coordination – both of which are helped greatly by a strong core.” States Barrett. Exercises like the plank, balance boards, sit-ups/crunches and leg raises/lowers are all great for engaging core muscles and building strength.

3 General Strength With a Lower Body Focus – Feel the burn!

While we can’t neglect the rest of our body, the lower body is critical when it comes to winter fitness. Barrett notes that “to reach that next level of performance, you must develop and maintain more strength in your legs. Squats, lunges and deadlifts are all great for building lower body strength. Cardio activities such as cycling and rowing (eccentric) and running, hiking and hopping drills (concentric) can also provide significant gains.”

1 Tune Up

– A base clean & repair, edge tune & repair, base grind, hot wax, scrape & polish and binding check will ensure your skis or snowboard are in tip-top condition – whether or not you stored them nicely over the summer. The Outpost at Grouse Mountain offers equipment preparation with easy drop-off and pick-up; as do local ski & snowboard retailers.

2 Gear Up –

While we all want to look great on the slopes, comfort should be at the forefront of gear selection. “Make sure boots are well fitted and select skis, snowboard or snowshoes that are appropriate for your skill level and the types of conditions you’re likely to experience, “ states Barrett. You don’t need “big fatty” skis if you’re going to rock the groomers all season. For base and outer layer clothing, Grouse Mountain’s Outfitters has a great selection of clothing and knowledgeable staff to help you make a savvy selection.

3 Get Up

– To take full advantage of the fitness you’ve achieved and your gear-ready self, you need a season pass that will help to ensure you get up on the mountains as much as possible. Grouse Mountain offers a variety of season passes as well as 5 and 10 Day Snow Packs, increasing the affordability of getting up for skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing.

The styling is sharper this year, and slightly edgy with roof strakes and a break in the front wheel arches. These modern cuts improve the aerodynamics, but the DB11 remains a cohesive whole, a Savile Row suit paired with an Apple watch.
