FESTIVAL 2018

WELCOME TO THE 39TH ANNUAL
Coho Festival
The Coho Society of the North Shore is in its fourth decade of raising public awareness of current and potential threats to local waterways and fisheries and helping to resolve these issues through protecting, enhancing and restoring salmonid habitats. The Festival is the society’s main fundraiser to support these efforts. We are very excited to announce a terrific line up of live music presented by Western Stevedoring and Neptune Terminals. The Hot Mammas, a local, sweet harmony trio that can take you from The Boswell Sisters to the Andrew Sisters and then shoot you squarely into the 60’s with Motown and beyond! Also performing on our main stage will be Al Foreman and the Soulmates, a respected presence on the Vancouver music scene for more than five decades. Al showed that the blues have a sensse of humour with his original song, “You Used to Be My Dream But Now You’re My Nightmare.” Festival-goers will also enjoy Canadian classic from the group Stonebolt. Our special guests for this year’s musical finale is the wildly popular Beatles tribute band The Fab Fourever!
Come early to watch the Coho Swim participants brave the Ambleside chilly waters and cheer on the runners in the Coho Run - great athletes who have made it all the way from the race start in Kitsilano. Enjoy Larry Carlsen, the famous Salmon BBQ featuring Coho salmon provided by SaveCoho Society of the On-Foods. But make sure you leave room for North Vancouver’s North Shore President, best natural ice cream from Welcome Parlour. Following Festival and Sherry Parrott, tradition, the Squamish Nation Canoe Family will give their Coho Festival Chair “Blessing of the Salmon” at the Opening Ceremonies, and at welcome you the Village, Nation Ambassadors will share stories and the kids to the annual can make a paddle necklace or fish hat! Nature Walks will be led Coho Festival. by Rebecca Duncan – tsitsayxemaat and will leave the Village at 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Richard E. Baker of the Squamish Nation has donated a stunning salmon carving and a Sterling Silver salmon bracelet. The Kids Park will be as fun as ever with a climbing wall, table tennis, bouncy castle, Hoppy Horse Races, Surfer Challenge, Sand Art Party and a Bike Safety Rodeo Course (bring your own bike or borrow one on hand). Kids will be encouraged to participate with Vanleena dancers and/or Champions Way of Life martial arts. Entertainment will include 15-year-old Ashley Pater with her folk-pop style music that tells a story with fun energy. New this year... a ukulele workshop hosted by Don Kline - BYO ukulele! This year, Red Fox Society Youth Leaders will to help kids learn stilt-walking, diablo, flower sticks and more! Check out J Peachy Gallery’s Wild Salmon Creative Stations: Paint the Wild Salmon Van, create Wood Medallion Eco-Art and watch an Aquatic Pop-Up Puppet show.

The festival’s unique Stewardship Zone has more than 30 exhibitors eager to share their knowledge and expertise on how you can be Stewards for our environment. Look for ‘Tent Talks’ located at the back of the Stewardship Zone (see more info on page 21). The Coho Festival is proud to be a Zero Waste Event but we need your help! There will be water available, but without cups, so bring your own water bottle. In keeping with the focus on preserving our environment, we ask that you take home what you bring and deposit all waste in the appropriate bins at one of the recycling stations and to come to the festival, walk, ride your bike or take transit. You can lock your bike to the fencing around the Save-On-Foods garden. The main goal of the Coho Festival is to raise funds and create awareness for various North Shore stewardship groups that assist in protecting and sustaining our salmon. Check the map and schedules on the next few pages so you will not miss any of the fabulous activities and all-day entertainment we have to offer.
We hope to see you at Ambleside Park on Sunday September 9th! Sherry Parrott Coho Festival Chair
