After temporarily closing its doors, this dealership is back, stronger than ever, and eager to reintroduce itself to the community. From an impressive product lineup to unmatched customer service and innovative programs, North Shore Mitsubishi is set to reclaim its spot as a cornerstone of the North Shore automotive landscape. Products North Shore Mitsubishi boasts a diverse product lineup comprising four distinct models, three of which are SUVs and one a hatchback. The dealership takes pride in its commitment to tracking down specific vehicle types for customers, ensuring they find their perfect match. By far, the most popular vehicle is the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), which stands as North Shore Mitsubishi’s flagship model, experiencing immense popularity with a substantial waitlist. The dealership takes numerous orders for this eco-friendly vehicle. The PHEV boasts a full plug-in capability, offering a range of 70 km on a full electric charge, making it ideal for city driving. Additionally, it features a gas engine to support drivers in case they run out of electric charge. While previously, wait times could stretch on for months, the dealership will now have an increasing supply of the Outlander PHEV, making the wait time dramatically shorter. “We want people to know that if they want it, we will have a lot more for them. Often, they don’t even bother coming because they don’t want to wait,” general manager Matt Clapperton says. Service With a fully functioning Parts and Service

department, North Shore Mitsubishi caters to the maintenance needs of all makes and models. Their services come with a complimentary wash and vacuum, and they offer lifetime free car washes to customers who purchase vehicles from their dealership. Customer reviews The outstanding customer service provided by the dealership’s sales team has received high praise. Customers appreciate the welcoming and pressurefree environment, where they are encouraged to take their time in making the significant decision of purchasing a vehicle.

Often when you go into a dealership, they won’t even talk to you if you don’t plan on buying that day. But we don’t care if you’re going to buy now or months from now. We treat everyone the same. MATT CLAPPERTON NORTH SHORE MITSUBISHI GENERAL MANAGER

“Often when you go into a dealership, they won’t even talk to you if you don’t plan on buying that day. But we don’t care if you’re going to buy now or months from now. We treat everyone the same,” Clapperton says. “A vehicle is the second biggest purchase of your life next to a house. We want people to be able to take their time.” Mitsubishi’s unparalleled warranty Mitsubishi stands out with its generous 10-year warranty, double the industry standard, reinforcing its commitment to customer satisfaction and product reliability. This extended warranty period has contributed to the brand’s loyal customer base. New to Canada programs North Shore Mitsubishi acknowledges the diverse demographics in the North Shore area, with many newcomers facing credit challenges. To address this, they offer an exceptional newcomer credit program, providing guaranteed approval as long as applicants can prove employment and have a small down payment. This program has helped many newcomers secure financing for their vehicle purchases. ■

Meet the dynamic husband and wife team transforming homes on Vancouver’s North Shore

G

raham and Niki Schulz, the husband-and-wife build and design team behind Schulz Construction, are making waves on Vancouver’s North Shore. With over three decades of construction experience and a keen eye for interior design, the Schulz duo is becoming synonymous with trust, quality and innovation in custom home building. As the Vancouver real estate market remains competitive, Schulz Construction offers homeowners an alternative to buying new properties. A unified approach Graham and Niki Schulz pride themselves on their unique ability to seamlessly integrate the construction and interior design processes. Their unified approach means that clients get the benefit of a cohesive team focused on delivering the best results. “The biggest thing is that we’re on the same team,” Niki says. “We’re working towards the same goal— the best outcome for the customer.” Practicality meets dream design Schulz Construction’s journey into the design world began almost 10 years ago driven mainly by the suggestion of some of their customers after working together casually selecting materials and giving design input on their builds. The Schulzs saw the synergy of working alongside each other and this solidified the move to pursue a partnership of design and build. Niki, who has always had a passion for creating inviting interiors, returned to school to obtain her design certificate.

budget and desired living style. Their collaborative efforts result in projects that align with their clients’ visions and financial capabilities. “The reality is that because we’re married, we’re working for our clients at the dinner table. Work chatter continues way beyond the work site,” Niki says. “We care so much about our customers and many of them end up our friends. We want to make sure they get the absolute best for their homes.”

When people think of renovating, they don’t realize how much of their home will be rebuilt. It’s a new home, using the original ‘good bones’. NIKI SCHULZ CO-OWNER

Preserving the past, building the future One of Schulz Construction’s unique selling points is their approach to home rebuilding. They often take homes back to their original studs, preserving the best parts of the structure, such as the old growth lumber, and shaping the home into the desired functionality. This approach ensures not only quality but also sustainability, a crucial element of their projects. “When people think of renovating, they don’t realize how much of their home will be rebuilt. It’s a new home, using the original ‘good bones’,” Niki says. A skilled and loyal team A cornerstone of Schulz Construction’s success is their dedicated team of inhouse carpenters, some of whom have been with them for nearly 15 years. This consistency ensures that projects are completed efficiently and to the highest standards.

“Budget is a huge part of things. Sometimes people dream outside their wallet. We take a practical approach to things,” Niki says.

Schulz Construction’s commitment to trade loyalty is another driving force behind their success. Paying their tradespeople on time and offering consistent work results in faster project completion and top-notch quality.

Taking this hands-on approach to each project is key for the Schulz team. They focus on understanding the client’s needs,

Moving Spirit Pilates This pilates studio offers a tailored experience for all fitness levels

A

fter Tara Walsh, a North Vancouver horticulturist and avid mountain biker, injured a disc in her back, she thought her career and the opportunity to participate in her favourite leisure activity were over. Between the demands of a very physical job and navigating the backcountry trails on her bike, discovering Pilates was a game changer for Tara. “We spent time bringing her back from injury,” says Susannah Steers, owner of Moving Spirit Pilates. “What Tara learned about her body and her movement in the process resulted in the kind of mobility and strength that weren’t available even before her injury.” For Tara, Pilates has become fundamental to her overall health and athleticism, and helps her maintain her active lifestyle. At its best, Pilates is balanced exercise, based on whole-body movement. It encourages you to focus on breathing and cultivate a mind-body connection, one of control and technique, while being mindful of how all your movements are connected, and supported from your core. At Moving Spirit Pilates, Steers explains their philosophy: “Everyone has movement habits, which may affect how they’re able to build and maintain strength. Our approach involves looking at your body, movement and life - and meeting you wherever you are now. Whether you’re in peak condition or on the path to recovery, we work with you to improve your movement and increase your fitness in a healthy and sustainable way.” Steers emphasizes that the goal is for you to be able to navigate your daily life and accomplish all your desired tasks, while also feeling more confident in reaching for new goals. You’re not just adding muscle; you’re also identifying and addressing areas that need better support and balance. When your foundation is well integrated, it becomes possible to build strength with less struggle. As people progress with the studio, they tend to discover new ease in their movement, and a refreshing lightness and efficiency to their athleticism.

Pilates packages and memberships Our teachers work directly with you to help you learn how to move your body better as you gain fitness. They specialize in creating personalized Pilates programs tailored to your unique needs, goals, and challenges. “All of our teachers are career professionals with over 20 yearsexperience in the field, who are devoted to supporting you every step of the way” reveals Steers. The Introductory Private Training package is the first step, which involves five, 55-minute introductory private training appointments. Then, most move on to a monthly Small Group Reformer Class membership which is similar to personal training, in a small group setting. In a class, each person works through their own personalized program, under the guidance and coaching of staff who correct form, cue new strategies, and add progressions (and sometimes a little magic) along the way.

Additionally, Pilates Mat classes are available as the studio’s only “instructorled” class option. Mat classes are accessible in monthly class series. There’s also ongoing private training for those with special challenges or busy schedules, so you can address specific issues or work more intensively toward goals. “Consistency and frequency of practice are important for best results,” says Steers. “You don’t have to push yourself past crazy limits just because somebody tells you. Know how your own body feels and recognize there are ways of getting where you want to go without having to beat yourself up to get there.” “We’re about building relationships: inside the body, between body and mind, between exercise and life, and within the Moving Spirit Pilates community,” Steers says. “What has evolved over the years is a beautiful community of active people who care about each other, celebrate each other’s wins, and support each other through challenges.” ■

others or itself in danger - a correction might be warranted. We believe in structure. During COVID, people were always home and often didn’t leave their dogs alone. A dog needs to know it can be by itself when you go out without becoming hysterical.”

With a combined experience of over 70 years, her team of instructors is committed to providing individuals and families with the most successful, up-to-date motivational training and behavioural modification.

But how does one address that?

Jackson started nearly forty years ago when she found that her own dog lacked proper canine training. Her veterinarian encouraged her to conduct behavioural research, and she soon discovered she was “overindulging [her] dog and not acting like a leader, but instead giving the dog everything it wanted.” Following this revelation, Jackson was inspired to learn more and went on to study at the University of Guelph in a program focusing on canine behaviour, nutrition, and the psychology of dogs. Taking the lead Jackson and her dedicated team focus on creating a friendly, comfortable atmosphere that sets up the owner and their dog for success, with one-on-one training or group classes, as well as athome sessions. “We want to help people raise their dog so it is comfortable in our growing community and able to adjust to its environment, including areas with bikes, pedestrians and other dogs,” she explains. “A dog must be a good family member and know its place. A lot of the recent training says never to say no or correct the dog, and, on occasion, we disagree.” she describes. “For example, if your dog is putting you,

“You start carefully leaving it in a separate area, teaching it to be on its own, an hour here and there every day, building up the time.” A new ‘leash’ on life For puppies, especially, learning these habits and instilling a steadfast routine is crucial, particularly with socialization.

We want to help people raise their dog so it is comfortable in our growing community and able to adjust to its environment, including areas with bikes, pedestrians and other dogs. ANN JACKSON OWNER AND LEADER

“The prime time for socializing a puppy is best between 8 and 13 weeks of age , — and then don’t stop!,” says Jackson. “Puppies pick up commands right away, and it is amazing to see.” For those debating getting a dog, Jackson can help you make the most informed decision by discussing your family dynamics, lifestyle, and financial commitment. Jackon’s philosophy echoes a simple but effective idea: “Dogs want to work. They want to be of service. Just like all of us.” If you are interested in lessons, Ann Jackson Perfect Puppy Start locations include: Mollie NYE House – 940 Lynn Valley Road, North Vancouver St Agnes Anglican Church – 530 12th ST East, North Vancouver St Francis Anglican Church – 4773 South Piccadilly Road, West Vancouver To learn more, visit annjackson.ca or call 604-922-3851. ■

Theory + Essence Customized dental care meets facial aesthetics in North Vancouver

W

hatever your past experiences were visiting the dentist, issues that left a lot to be desired, perhaps the cold atmosphere, outdated equipment, limited services, or the waiting area’s dingy décor, say a holdover from the ‘90s, will be nothing but a distant memory, thanks to an inventive practice on the North Shore. Theory + Essence has created a new era of aesthetics, a next-level dental and facial care clinic that will not only meet your expectations but exceed them in every conceivable way. It’s Vancouver’s first-of-its-kind hybrid dental and medispa, led by Dr. Farshid Shahbazi and his wife, Naz, co-founder and director, creating a fusion of beautiful skin and healthy smiles. You might be confused, albeit pleasantly surprised when you step into the reception area. You’ll be greeted with creamy Calcutta marble, warm wood, and attractive lighting—all the makings of a welcoming spa-like environment, and unlike any traditional dental office, encompassing 6,000 square feet, with views of Lionsgate Bridge and bustling Lonsdale Avenue. The space and services are anything but conventional. Dr. Shahbazi and his clinically trained team of dental and facial rejuvenation experts provide complete oral and maxillofacial care. Meanwhile, Naz—the brains behind the spa side—blends facial care with an effective dental care regimen to further improve their clients’ experience. High-quality, custom dental services A family dentist, Dr. Shahbazi combines authenticity and modernity, offering custom-made dental care using cuttingedge dental techniques. “I’ve been working in this area for more than 20 years, and have the same core values today as when I started: to provide the highest quality of service to my patients while believing in the value of innovation and technology,” he describes. “We’re constantly evolving and expect

to be a fully digital clinic in the next few months. We are always updating our systems because these new technologies help with diagnosis, enabling us to meet patient’s expectations more predictably and with consistent outcomes, providing high-level and painless treatments.” He continues: “That’s the value of digital technology, AI-driven systems in our practice. We’ve created a platform to deliver the highest level of dental care while incorporating facial aesthetics.” Theory + Essence offers a full range of services that endeavour to give you the smile of your dreams, including dental implants, teeth whitening, Invisalign, and veneers, to name a few.

Green Coast Rubbish This junk removal and waste disposal service is keeping North Vancouver communities green

B

orn in Ireland and raised in Ontario, Eamonn Duignan, a B.C. resident for over 25 years, attributes his mom with imparting values about sustainability, recycling, and upcycling—well before those terms became commonplace—and ingrained her approach: don’t be wasteful, and don’t throw anything out that still had value in some form. Armed with multiple degrees: forestry, kinesiology, and education, his eventual career path wasn’t derived from those disciplines, in fact, it was happenstance, taking a part-time job at a junk removal company to support his passion for mountain biking. Duignan also participated in semi-professional mountain biking for 14 years. However, the model was not sustainable. “It consisted of pick-up and drop-off at the landfill, regardless of the material or value, and I felt it didn’t align with the values I was taught,” reveals Duignan. “I believed I could do it better my way, on my own.” After being inspired by more eco-friendly ways to dispose of waste, Duignan is now president and owner of North Vancouver’s Green Coast Rubbish, and for the past 17 years, has been making a meaningful difference in the community and beyond, while protecting the natural environment. The company’s main services include residential and commercial junk removal, custom recycling programs (for items such as binders, carpet, and styrofoam), deconstruction, demolition and waste removal from construction sites. They endeavour to consciously minimize their footprint on the planet, which is reflected in their work ethic, by diverting as much waste as possible from landfills, making every effort to recycle, reuse and repurpose to the fullest extent they can. “Our diversion rate is consistently over 75 per cent, based on data collected by Climate Smart from 2010 to 2020,” recalls Duignan. “In a typical year, we divert more than one million pounds of material through our green junk removal

practices, as reported by Climate Smart. That’s material that doesn’t end up in our landfills.” As a local enterprise, they think globally and act locally, with community involvement as a pillar of their philosophy, not only serving the community, but collaborating with likeminded organizations. “I’ve fostered a lot of relationships over time,” says Duignan. “We work a lot with Tom Riessner, founder of Urban Repurpose, as well as Shelter to Home, a North Vancouver-based charity. We also support many others beyond the North Shore and do a number of things throughout the year.”

One such undertaking was a recycling project with BCAA, making handcrafted tote bags, upcycled from canvas comfort kits and emergency kits. “It was really cool to utilize materials for good use and save them from being dumped.” Green Coast Rubbish is also a proud sponsor of the annual Lynn Valley Parade of Trees. As a team that lives for repurposing used materials, they sourced decorations for their tree from materials from their recycling jobs. Duignan is a hands-on guy, basing his operation on clear communication, which makes everything run efficiently. His crew of a dozen employees are all local hires and mainly part-time young adults, who work cohesively within a culture of strong collaboration. “They’re all respectful and wellintentioned individuals,” says Duignan. “It’s really encouraging to see how they’ve grown, and the things they’ve learned and applied in their life. That’s very important to me. The impact on personal lives, which in turn, impacts the community.” “I would never imagine from when I began that I would have a fleet of vehicles and such a strong tie to the community,” explains Duignan. “To have a business that would be revered and accepted, starting something from nothing and then being so connected, and having those relationships with so many people for 17 years is pretty special.”

Advanced Medical Healthcare Equipment

This West Vancouver business fills a unique gap in the medical equipment industry

W

e’re so pleased with our success when it comes to doing something helpful and being of service to people,” says Amir Mohammadi, founder and director of Advanced Medical Healthcare Equipment. Since opening his West Vancouver store in January 2018, Mohammadi can see firsthand that his small, local business is truly making a significant difference in enriching and empowering people’s lives, especially those who are frustrated with mobility issues or need better, more accessible solutions for at-home medical care. Post-surgery, in particular, many folks are at a loss when returning to their homes, often feeling unstable, unsafe and unsupported while they recover. Our aging population also has special needs, whether in their homes, assisted living, or long-term care facilities. A niche was definitely in the market, and clearly, Mohammadi recognized that. Industry knowledge with an empathetic approach “As a biomedical engineer, my background for twenty years was in dealing with medical equipment,” he explains. “I worked in hospitals as a medical equipment technologist alongside surgeons, doctors, and nurses for years. I saw a gap for home medical equipment that needed to be filled.” Mohammadi continues that many customer referrals come from healthcare professionals who know what they want for their patients. “Then, those patients come to us to provide that equipment,” he describes. “We also help seniors in care centers and assisted living homes who can’t do certain things.” Most people experiencing medical challenges are open to friendly, expert advice, and Mohammadi says they

consistently receive requests from clients directly. However, he also emphasizes that their concerned families often have questions, seeking expertise as those who advocate for their loved ones who perhaps can’t do so for themselves. Advanced Medical Healthcare Equipment prides itself on offering years of experience to guide clients in making the best decisions for their own unique needs and concerns. After all, there is no onesize-fits-all with healthcare solutions, but Mohammadi wants clients to know that their options are plentiful.

My passion has always been helping and assisting patients with mobility problems. I like to think of my business as a one-stop shop for everyone, and for seniors needs in particular. AMIR MOHAMMADI FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR

Collaboration is key Working alongside occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and kinesiologists to achieve the best outcome for each individual is a natural fit for Mohammadi, with his experience in the field and relationships with those medical experts. “My passion has always been helping and assisting patients with mobility problems,” he says. “I like to think of my business as a one-stop shop for everyone, and for seniors needs in particular.” Mohammadi is always searching for new products to introduce to his lineup at the store, travelling the globe to trade shows where “every year there is something new from manufacturers.” Seeking out these new technologies keeps things interesting, explains Mohammadi, and introducing them as a means of helping his clients in West Vancouver is one of the most gratifying aspects of providing service. Ultimately, customer service is crucial in the healthcare business, and Mohammadi says: “We listen, we spend time, eventually we will find a cost-effective solution for our clients.” To learn more about Advanced Medical Healthcare Equipment, visit in-store at 1863 Marine Drive, West Vancouver or online at advancedmedicalbc.ca. ■

Reckless Shipyards This North Shore eBike shop stops at nothing to provide you with the perfect ride

T

ony Sun truly believes that absolutely anyone can enjoy an eBike.

After ten-plus years in business and thousands of life-long customers, it’s a belief that is most certainly standing the test of time. Since opening up shop on the North Shore in 2019, Reckless Shipyards eBikes has helped countless clients from across Metro Vancouver to unlock the unbridled joy and freedom that can only come by way of two wheels. And behind it all comes a promise of unrelentingly friendly service. “We’re not of the mindset to sell you something as soon as you walk in the door, we try to solve problems and make your life better,” explains Sun, who serves as the shop’s owner and managing partner. “It’s about smiling and having a positive attitude. We’ll be happy when we see the customer happy.” Aligned around the themes of fun, fitness and freedom, Sun and his partners leave no stone unturned to ensure a customer’s happiness. To that end, Sun doesn’t overburden customers with overly complex details, nor intimidating sales tactics – instead, this is an atmosphere that’s fun and informative. And while eBikes are Sun’s specialty, he also offers pedal bikes, rentals, service, skis, accessories and top-to-bottom consultation services. It’s perhaps in the consultation phase that Sun’s passion for cycling shines through the most. He’ll ride alongside his customers for upwards of eight to 10 kilometres to determine the size, feel and fit of the eBike that will best suit their needs.

Some clients want to be offroad, some want a commuter. Others need a means to get up and down the North Shore’s many hills, while another segment of Sun’s clientele use eBikes as a way for their family to bond around exercise and being outside. “Hills are a huge source of hesitation for a lot of people who want to move around and it can be a real deal breaker, but I show them how we can work around that,” Sun explains. “There is a real desire to have an efficient way of getting around to avoid traffic, but it’s also a very economical method of transport that is efficient, fun and stress free.”

Sun’s commitment to a stress-free eBike purchase extends beyond the initial purchase date and comes with complimentary tune-up service, courtesy loaner and endless expert advice on cycling safety. While it might not seem intuitive at first, not having those all-important checkups in place is akin to buying a car without any service agreements or not getting routine oil changes. “I understand that people are hesitant because they don’t want to walk out of the shop with a $100 bill, but what they’re doing is delaying important servicing and that is less than ideal,” Sun says. “Safety is our priority, along with your pleasure on the bike.” And while Sun knows that no two cyclists are the same, he is bound to them all by one unifying purpose. “We really enjoy building life-long relationships, because that builds a good business and a good community,” Sun says.
